Changing Data Usage Cycle Dates? - Huawei Mate 10 Questions & Answers

Hi all, this is probably a well-known issue by now but here goes...
Changing data usage cycles in the new EMUI 8 on the Mate 10 is now impossible.
The old workaround of using the "Activity Launcher" app does not work anymore. The "Shortcut Master" app works (requires searching the settings string) but launching the shortcut goes straight to the initial "Settings" page for general settings. This begs the question, did Huawei completely remove this from stock Android for EMUI 8?

I've been trying to work out how to change the date with no luck - pretty ridiculous that I can't!

I'm on BLA-029 (Mate 10 Pro) 132 Firmware, C636 region and I can confirm that a new setting has been added to specify the start day where you monthly mobile data limit resets itself to zero.

It's good to hear that the feature has been built now... this is the first phone I've had in years where it can't be set and seems so basic compared to all the really complex stuff this phone can do without breaking a sweat.
I'm currently on 8.0.0.129 C432 region, so hope that the new feature you've seen in C636's .132 version makes its way to a new version of C432 soon!

Schedule power on and off app?

Anyone know of an app that can power off the phone at a certain time and then power it back on?
How would this app be running when the phone is off? I'm sure profile settimgs or tasker could put it in airplane mode for a a certain period.
Im not sure if any app could power back on the phone, but if anything could it would be Tasker, i just got it the other day and i LOVE it, you can automate just about anything your heart could desire. Check it out here:

Tasker is the whole reason I am looking. The developer of tasker said that running commands as root is not yet supported. So, I just need to run an app that will shutdown the phone at a specified time.

Just asking. Years ago, my blackberry could do a full power off and back on at specific times.
Just an app for unrooted phones that restarted the phone at a set time would be great. Anyone seen anything.
i imagine the app would be phone specific? Idk about other android devices, but when the captivate is off and you plug it in to charge, it boots up a screen showing battery levels. Following on that line of thinking, why not replace the battery meter with a timer and fool the phone into thinking its always plugged in charging? ofc, this is a very crude way to do it but it may set people on the right line of thought.
I bet the blackberry that did it had some special hardware though that held some minute charge and timer.
Shut off / Wake up
I had a BBB 9000 and it came with a native program to set a time to wake up and shut off the phone at a time you would set. It had it for through the week and weekends. I really liked to be able to do that,
this owuld be a great app!
I am looking for something like this too. I used to have the native app on my blackberry and miss it. Any programmers out there want to take it on?
i realize this is quite the old post but many chinese phones support this and the scheduled option is in the settings menu to turn on and off the phone so it appears to be built into the rom
Yes, most Chinese android phones come with this feature. It has its own tab "scheduled on and off" in the settings section.
I had a meizu M2 which ran on FLY-OS(Android lollipop) and it had this feature. It was able to power off and back on again by itself. Even if I removed the battery after powering off the phone and insert it 20mins later, it would still power on at the set time. Also, blackberry phones were able to this also.
From what I've read about this online, some people claim that a few Chinese companies have patented this feature and have exclusive ownership over it. Currently, no other phones or custom firmwares have this feature.
Can we all together request the community for porting this feature?
Bump!
LeEco x722 stock Banggood 20s version has this feature too.

Schedule power on and off in android as a native feature NOT an app
Schedule power on and off in android as a native feature is possible as some Chinese phones have it for years (decade?).
Why is still not yet widely available this feature on Android by 2020, is it really patent problem or is it due it needs specific hardware which most phone don't have...............?
As once I had it on Chines phone I never stop miss it.
Please can somebody clarify this subject for good.
Thanks!
Didn't see this mentioned in either changelog or any Android Nougat reviews - finally has a schedule power on/off option!
HOW-TO: https://www.technologyhint.com/schedule-power-on-off-android/
Note: In Android 7.1.2 this setting is in Battery menu.

What is the article trying to say? I don't get it! (yes I seen it and used it before)
Seen actually few articles like that but it doesn't answer my question.
The pictures in the article shows an Android KitKat probably on some Chinese device.
Exactly as my old Chinese phone THL L969 (TECHNOLOGY HAPPY LIFE) LOL but I giving them big credit!
And I didn't find it on my Asus Android 7.1.2 anywhere in Settings nor in Battery menu.
So again, why is it not on nearly every phone and Android version by now 2020.
What is it so mysterious about it......................?
Thank you.
@Robexuk
My last 2 cents:
Once a device got powered off, not any piece of software running on it can perform a power on: should be obvious.
What can be done is to programmatically put Android device timer controlled in stand by mode ( means display gets switched off ) and to reawaken it. On rooted phones ( with BusyBox installed on ) this is very easy to realize.
Currently i power off my x722 manually (and i see myself that the phone is been really powered off after a while) and later, on the next morning it switches on automatically just to run the AOSIP's 9.0 default alarm.
I don't know if running that apk (extracted from Titanium Backup) helped me to retain that old 6.0 feature but before that my 9.0 phone was not able to automatically power on to run that alarm...

Hello, can you eventually share that app?
I've searched for it but don't find it on the web....
It's to try it on my blackview bv6100 chinese phone which doesn't have this option.... (my old mann zug 5s had that with its stock rom...)

What encryption options does Mate 10 Pro support?

Didn't think I was going to replace my trusted Nexus 5X by a Mate 10 Pro but a number of incentives, at least in France, made me switch: -100€ for trading in an old (non working) phone, -29€ additional for bringing an IPhone 6Plus that I found when practicing freediving, a free Moleskine Smart Writing Set ($200 value) and finaly a free Google Home mini ($49 value). Looks like they really wanted me to go for the Mate 10 Pro!
Now before leaving the store I played around with the demo unit and got literally shocked when I couldn't find the Encryption status (Encrypted or not encrypted) under the security settings.
There are bunch of other options including the vault application but I'm looking for the Android system level encryption scheme, if any , that is used on that phone.
So my big question is.... what does the Mate 10 Pro use by defaut and what can be set? Full Disk Encryption (FDE) that results in a two-stage boot process or File Based Encryption?
As a result what can be seen under TWRP if not unlock code is provide, evertything, only the system but no /data, nothing until a unlock code is provided?
Thank you in advance for any feedback on that topic. I really don't want to return the phone for that.

Android/whatsapp hacked! Please help!

Hi, I really need some advice and help, please!
Someone hacked my galaxy note 8 (latest update of OS) using Bluetooth. Thereafter when I had Bluetooth turned off all the time I would sometimes found it had turned on again and at times a pic would randomly appear in my camera roll folder. I was targeted by a group of people and having recalled looking back I was encouraged to message through WhatsApp and I believe that chrome and Andoid webview extension were involved. They also got into my gmail and tried to delete my contacts and wipe my phone and whatsapp history. Aftert this I saw that a Linux device had been attached to my gmail account.
I then went to an iphone and received a whatsapp from someone and a pic appeared again in my camera roll. I believe they were trying to do the same again and not sure how effective it is on iOS.
But now I have a new galaxy note 8 and someone has sent me a pic and video. I don't know that they are involved and I think I'm being overly cautious, but I need to understand what they did before and what I can do to check if they have hacked my new phone and doing the same thing again, and what I can do now to ensure they don't do it. I'm worried now that if they have got into my new phone and WhatsApp, will they have been able to get my IMEI and is my new phone now permanently susceptible to attack?
If I wipe my phone back to factory settings and reinstall everything again and start a new whatsapp with a new number, will that work?
My MS surface has also been acting up and I'd like to know if there's an easy sign to check on there too.
Thanks so much in advance!

I do strongly advice you to do a full factory reset or go to the nearest technician if you don't know how to do it, to flash the phone from scratch inmediatly. Also try the best security app for android once you setup your device again. That's enough.

I would also report the issue to the tech support of WhatsApp, if there's any. Also, change every passwords on your Google devices with more secure passwords, Google, banking, social. And do place a secure password to block your device. Good luck.

This is why I dislike Touchwiz, it's so outdated and vulnerable.
Just reflash your whole system, you can find guides on YouTube on how to flash a new firmware.
I would also recommend changing to a custom ROM with up to date security patches.
Edit: You should also change all your passwords to something very difficult like 'nJfi8t%Nc178c'
If you have difficulties remembering there's a lot of apps out there that can help, I personally use last pass, you should check it out.

If you were conned into downloading a webextension then this has nothing to do with whatsapp it has to do with the user. Conntact google security to change your account. In general if they hacked a phone the phone only is the problem but if they have access to all your info then it can always be a problem. About bluetooth always have at least a code between the devices (some BT keyboards do not even have this). Also look at the security update on the device if it is not the latest then swith to one of the custom roms here which are always secure.
As for passwords think of a sentence and use the first letters of each word incorperate numbers capital letters and a symbol this helps you to remember it.
For example
I Have A Dog Who Name Is Henry And I Love Him=IHADWNIHAILH
now change A for the & symbol one I for 1 and A for 4=1H4DWNIH&ILH
mix it up with some upper case and lower case (names)=1h4dwniH&Ilh
you can now add in other symbols or spell words such as [email protected] (too big so we will use only part @m )add ! after Henry and [] around &Ilh [email protected]![&ILH]
now you have a random easy to remember password. This password is the basis for all the security on android (at the current time) so even if you use a code it still unlocks with this and encrypts.

Thanks for clarifying that fact for me.
Thanks so much! Would a custom firmware allow me to keep the use of knox? I'm thinking to flash it back to factory and only install and use everything from within knox.

Just another question regarding Knox Secure Folder.
If I were to install and run everything through the secure folder and I were to be compromised again through a web extension, would that then all hackers to view everything on my phone again regardless of whether it's in the knox environment or outside? Would a backdoor like that work into the secure environment as it did in my normal android system?
Thanks again!

If your knox is still working and not tripped then that would be a good idea. However understand that the way to get in and out of knox still relies on encryption methods see CVE-2016-1919 as well as the kernel level security CVE-2016-6584 see also https://googleprojectzero.blogspot.com/2017/02/lifting-hyper-visor-bypassing-samsungs.html, this means that if the key or encryption method is faulty you can get around it and the kernel is more complicated but will also do the same thing. The last way is to access a shared resource such as a clipboard that has access to both places a example of this is CVE-2016-3996. And CVE-2018-9142. Granted most of these are 2017 and 2018 and a quick look at the samsung CVA at https://www.cvedetails.com/vulnerability-list/vendor_id-822/Samsung.html does not have anything for Oreo this can be since until recently only the 9s' had it. But their is a recurring theme that the CVAs' are repeated out of the last 5 4 are repeated and some are simple mistakes (look at Googles project zero above in KALSAR). The question is is this enough and the answer is probably but a security orientated Rom might be a better bet. (I know this is not fair since they do not have CVAs). But a full wipe and fresh install should be enough. Add in a firewall too if you did not have that already.

Sorry for the late reply, but Knox, in my opinion is super vulnerable, new android versions are safe enough.
And no, using a custom ROM would not have Touchwiz integrated nor Knox. Why? Because it will most likely be running stock android vanilla.
More secure than Samsung's Touchwiz, recommend something like LineageOS.

Look this depends on your perspective
FACT: knox is a hardware based security system which is unique to Samsung
FACT: Samsung phones are the most sold
FACT: The maker of the hardware has the resources to secure it better
Therefore Samsung knox is more secure and yes more users using the phone make it more advantageous to crack it. However Samsung to their credit does try to increase security in other ways such as using the TrustZone more and SEAndroid policy strengthening. Lineage is a great choice however knox which will be tripped and ever if not it needs custom software to run AFAIK. Also samsung is DoD approved see DoD list and news article. This is not necessarily a good indication of overall security but it dos put things in a good perspective (DoD do not patch themselves rather rely on the developers and stay on top of things) Really high security Android OS such as copperhead also have such improvements as Knox (way better if you look carefully) but they are limited on what phones it will work on. Also Android 8 is a lot more secure but fact of the matter is the best party that can secure a Samsung phone is Samsung but I am not saying they do. I would recommend Stock Samsung but if you need a custom rom lineage is a good choice this is true also in terms of power (used to be snapdragon charging on a rooted phone is only up to 80% but I think there is a fix) but in versatility a custom rom always wins and power saver settings can be better than the original.

huawei mate 20 pro encryption

Hi everyone. May I know if the huawei mate 20 pro comes encrypted by default? Can’t seem to find the settings to turn it on/off.
I am pretty sure it's encrypted by default. The option to turn it off is removed I expect as part of Huawei's increased security.
Android phones are all encrypted by default now. In fact it is quite possible a requirement of Android to stay encrypted.

Kyocera KY-01L Android-based e-paper smartphone

This device caught my eye recently (Kyocera KY-01L):
https://uncrate.com/kyocera-ky-01l-card-phone/
Points of interest:
* Android-based
* e-paper display
* ultra compact
Personally I feel Kyocera made a huge mistake by not including the Play Store, or at least including an e-Reader application. A pocket-sized e-Reader that is also my phone just sounds awesome in theory (although the 380mAh battery might prove otherwise in reality...)
Since I use Hangouts and Hangouts Dialer for all my communications, I can't really use this unless I can get gApps installed.
Does anyone have experience hacking Kyocera phones? How difficult would it be to get root, TWRP, and gApps working on this thing?
I googled that phone and found your post. Most intriguing idea, but overpriced imho. I would like to test my developer skills on that but without adb or at least apk installer its useless
Android is not fully compatible (out-of-the-box) with e-ink and screen sizes under 3", unless it's heavily modified. Which is not worth the investmet, considering the target market. And even if Android were adapted, many apps wouldn't run anyway. They wrapped a layer around it to run essentials services. Note that there is a real browser though.
KY-01L Information
So i bought one of these myself out of curiosity and here's what i've found:
ADB can be enabled from the phones settings (the option is called "switch usb debugging") once it's enabled you can sideload APK's
APK's cannot be installed on the phone itself, when doing so you get the message than unknown sources are not enabled however as kyocera have modified the security settings there is no way to enable this afaik
The apps use AOSP icons and have some normal screens present which can be accessed with an activity launcher
When using installed apps the E-ink screen switches to a high refresh rate mode at random and the only way to get it back to normal is to launch cardphonehome (the default launcher)
The phone won't connect to any UK networks (i've only tried vodaphone and EE sims in it)
Bluetooth media audio seems to be removed entirely, even when sideloading a music player
The stock keyboard uses a 9 key input for text, you can sideload something like gboard but i haven't found the option to set it as the default input method
If you intend to buy one then i would suggest looking on YAJ proxy sites like buyee as they tend to go for ~£160.
Apps i'd recommend sideloading:
Activity launcher - lets you get into hidden menus and back into the stock launcher
Stealth music player - Plays music through the phones earpiece, can also enable the earpiece for use with audio from other apps
i'd also suggest lowering the DPI as some apps may be cramped
Dialer codes
*#*#4636#*#* - Android Testing menu
*#*#3878#*#* - Qualcomm FTM menu
*#*#225#*#* - Calendar info
Update: i've noticed the soc that CPUZ is reporting conflicts what others have said, ADB's CPU info command reports it as a wear 2100
I'm really curious if/how an ebook reading app would work on this. Did you try that out?
I'm considering buying a used one to try out as an ultra portable ebook reader.

any idea how to make it connect to EU 3g/4g ?
I have the Light Phone 2 which is very similar. I was able to root it and sideload apps on it. Harry is it possible to send over APKs from your Kyocera Card phone so I can test them on the light phone?

Hi
First of all, I appreciate the above information where I could find customizing about KY-01L. I was able to install Gmail, Chrome, Line lite, Gboard, and other utilities into my KY-01L!
To be honest, it was quite a stressful process to load apk`s and configure them a number of times.
The first step, I installed the Square Home launcher (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ss.squarehome2&hl=en&gl=us) and the Quickshortcut maker (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sika524.android.quickshortcut&hl=en&gl=us) that I am able to configure 10 times easier (Maybe some similar types of the app should work). the default setting of KY-01L is not able to configure app by the screen that is how it is designed by Kyocera.
After setting those 2 apps, I can configure launcher/shortcut in the home menu.
My KY-01L is not stable yet... still need to minor adjustments of configuration but it works what I was expected.

Hi there,
Can you explain how you managed to connect it to the network? The one I have is SIM unlocked, I can see available networks but it won't connect. The X.... symbol is displayed in the status bar ("Out of service area") but I am quite sure that the frequencies match.

Hi
I am using NTT Docomo carrier (in Japan) which is the preferred carrier for the KY-01L. KY-01L has limited bandwidth using LTE bands of 2.0GHz and 800MHz only. You would better check with your SIM carrier that uses those bandwidths or not.

Thanks for replying!
Well, it seems that my carrier doesn't offer the exact same frequencies. 3G is at 2100 MHz (B1) and LTE is at 2100 MHz (B1) and 1800 MHz (B3).
Too limited, indeed. I've been using Docomo and SoftBank and AU phones for over fifteen years now and they all worked but not this one

Hi I just ordered my KY-01L off ebay, and looking forward to doing what you're doing!
My question is - after you installed all these things (Square Home Launcher, Quick shortcut maker, Gmail, Chrome, Line lite, Gboard and other utilities), does the battery drain faster even when idle? If so, how much faster vs the vanilla version.
And what other utilities were you able to install on the KY-01L? Music player? Kindle? Youtube? Just curious to see what works...
Lastly, was the Square Home Launcher the only launcher that works? Or there were others that work but this is your preference.
Thanks!
