Hello,
I have a Streak with the 318/12821 build. It's rooted and has busybox installed, but I am not able to move many of my apps to the SD card. I have an Aria in which I am able to move all of the downloaded apps to the SD card, but on this Streak, it is still very limited. More apps have the move to SD button grayed out than allow it.
Anyone have any ideas?

Unless I'm mistaken, it's actually something that needs to be enabled by the App developer. You can't (again, unless I'm mistaken) forcefully move any app to the SD card unless it's been coded to allow it.
The Apps2SD feature is relatively new so not all apps have been re-coded to enable it.
Personally, I don't understand why people want to move their apps to SD card. Unless you fill up your apps list with loads of crap, there should be plenty of room on the device memory! Think of it this way, if you want to swap memory cards (for whatever reason) then all your apps that you have put on the SD card will not function.
Then there's the fact that most SD cards are slower than the internal memory, and that any widgets will not function if moved to SD etc...

Actually not all of the phones carry a lot of memory. The more expensive the phone the more memory you receive. Thanks for your advice, though. I had the same question as the other person.

Using the apps2sd that is 'built in' yu can't move everything to the sd card, each app dev can choose to enable or disable allowing this and for some apps it is not recommended (apps with widgets for example) because if the SD Card is removed the app won't work properly.
Your Aria was probably running a modified version of apps2sd which, if I understand correctly, creates a partition on the SD Card to be used for apps. This works differently than the apps2sd that is native to Android.
I've never had problems with moving apps back and forth from my phone's internal storage to the SD card. But recently, I've noticed that apps I used to be able to store externally (Shazam, Facebook, Twitter, etc.) have the "move to SD" option greyed out, making it impossible to move them off my phone. I'm running stock 2.3.4. I've combed the internet trying to find a fix to this issue, but have found no results so far. I'm contemplating doing a hard reset to hopefully fix this as a last resort if nothing else works... Anyone have any suggestions?

Download App2SD from the market for an easy way to see a list of apps installed on your phone that are programmed to support moving to SD card.
Conclusion: without manipulating your device, there is no way to transfer the apps you've mentioned to an external storage device.

Hmm...that would make sense. But I've had Pandora stored externally on my SD card since I was running 2.3.3 and that has a widget feature as well. I'm assuming that the update to 2.3.4 made it impossible to store apps that have widget functionality to the SD once you move them onto internal storage. Thanks for the help.

I did a quick search in our forum and found a few early threads but nothing that explained the differences to me... This is my first android.
My questions are around this menu:
Settings -> Applications -> Storage Use.
on the 'Downloaded' and 'All' tab, at the bottom it says "Internal Storage"
with what looks like a max of ~2.3GB.. at least mine says 790MB Used, 1.6GB Free.
On the 'On SD Card' tab it says "SD card storage" and a max ~10.5GB or so... (1.3gb used 9.2gb free)
I know I put a 32GB SD card in my phone.... and under phone & SD Storage, I see these three different storage points.
What's what here? Is there an internal mounted SD card in our phones that I can't remove?
When I "Move to SD" card, is the app only moving to this other 'internal' storage?
I was a little confused by this, but if my removable 32GB SD card literally is just extended storage that I put my own music/movies/videos...etc. on, then that's cool...
I just want to understand that 'move to SD' isn't actually moving it to my SD card at all... And then, how many of you move your apps to this other 'internal' SD card, or do you actually have a way to put them on your 'removable' SD card.
Don't know whether this is your first Android phone or, like me, you migrated to the Rezound from another phone, but here's the scoop. What used to be called \emmc on the Incredible, or the "internal" drive of 8 gigabytes is now mounted on the Rezound as \sdcard. Many applications think that your "external memory" is what is actually this "internal" 16 gb drive on the Rezound.
Your removable microsd card is mounted both as \sdcard2 and as \sdcard\ext_sd. For applications which enable you to designate a data directory, e.g. Titanium Backup, My Backup Pro, XDA Premium, Tapatalk, etc., you can redirect the app to store its data on the "real" external drive. Otherwise, your "external" data will really be stored on the "internal", nonremovable 16gb drive.
The other space (I believe it's 8gb) is for applications and ROM. It's so capacious, right now at least, that the necessity we faced on the Incredible and other phones to: (1) "move apps" to SD; or (2) use an ext3 partition and link2sd, is not as pressing. For instance, I easily have >100 apps installed and I still have nearly 2 gigabytes free in that space.

This part confused me and seems redundant. Coming from the Inc1 and 2 I never use the internal memory. With a 32gb card I want everything automatically saved on that. Now I have to deal with sdcard sdcard and ext_sd. I'm not enjoying this part of the phone but at least we have an sd
What your phone calls "sdcard" is actually your internal storage, most apps look at "sdcard" as your actual removable card, on this phone it is not. What your phone calls "sdcard2" is your removable sd card. If you want an app to store things on your removable sd card you have to either change the path in the app itself(of course most apps don't have this function) or move the data there manually. Its completely stupid and I hate it, but no phone is perfect.

I just stumbled upon it and I though it might be useful. In order to move an app from your phone's internal storage to your SD card, you just need to
1) open Settings -> Apps
2) Tap on an app
3) Tap on Storage
4) Tap Change
5) Tap SD card
PS: Obviously apps will take more time to open (the delay is noticable in facebook).

You don't even need to do that. Just long press any app then >app info>storage etc...

And for anyone tempted to try, the onboard 64 gig is far faster than any SD card you can currently buy. Many apps will run poorly, if at all. Moving apps to the SD card should be an absolute last resort, right after you've figured out which apps you really didn't need in the first place.

I tend to agree, I moved a much of apps to my SD now things run much slower I regret doing so.
Moving apps to SD is soooo kit kat....
Depends on what apps you moved i guess.
Ive notified NO CHANGE on the apps ive moved. WhatsApp is on the SSD card and behaves just as it did on internal.
Let's see.. samsung internet , Firefox, textra, all amazon apps, google drive, instagram, Snapchat, outlook, pandora, OneDrive...
NO DIFFERENCE at all.
Now there was one app, samsung gear 360, it did NOT like to be on storage card (kept force closing even though i was not using it when this was happening) so i moved it back to internal.
Also not ALL of the apps data is moved to the SD card. Some data of the app still lives on the SD.
EDIT: i dont use crackbook aka Facebook, so i cant speak on that, but i use WhatsApp, for example, and it opens up normally. No lag. None of the apps i moved are behaving out of normal. Again this is dependent on other factors, but in my daily use environment i dont notice any lag.
I also dont use the memory and storage optimizer (killing apps in the background from running)...
The internal storage is faster than sd unless you can find one of their new faster sd cards...if you move a lot of apps you may see performance loss...

I can't move WhatsApp on my S7 edge. Being wanting to. I get my N8 tomorrow, so even happier if I can now move it

While moving (most of the) apps to SD card memory was no problem with the Xperia Z5 and Android 7.1.1, I didn't find any way to manage this witth the XZ1 / Android 8.
Any hints or ideas?

Enable Developer options: https://www.theandroidsoul.com/enable-developer-options-android-o-8-0/
Then go to Settings => Developer Options and check if there is an option near the bottom of this list for "Force allow apps on external". This may enable the ability to move certain apps to SD Card. Try a reboot and see if you can move some apps or games to SD card.
Honest question.. What is the reason to use SD card for APPs in a device with 64GB of internal memory?

This is more for the XZ1 compact, which uses the same software base as the XZ1 but has only 32GB. There also seem to be more XZ1 users out there.

Honest answer. If you had a device with 64GB internal storage and 400GB SD card, where would you put as much memory load as possible?

Ah ok, no joy even after a reboot?
Sony seems to enjoy stripping functionality from it's Xperia range as it goes along, apparently in the name of simplicity. No double tap to wake, no moving to SD card, etc. Bummer.

Just found this thread after trying to move apps to the SD card on my new XZ1 Compact. So there's no way?!!
one of the main benefits of Android over iPhone was features like this in my opinion.
wish I'd known this before getting the phone. Prefer the smaller size of the handset, but I'm already using 60% of the internal storage. would have considered the full size XZ1 had I known.

My honest answer: Still internal for apps, since external storage is always slower.
Pretty much same reason I install all programs on my SSD despite my HDD being way bigger.
Ok, that is your decision . But why am I not allowed to decide what to do for myself?
i am using the compact. 32g is enough for almost everyone. most people cycle through several apps and a few games weekly. any of those being able to be changed in moments and swapped out for other things in your online library. i consider myself a power user and a power gamer. i absolutely adore this device 32g and all. all media can go onto the sd. so its games and apps in your main. do you need your entire app collection when your using a fraction of them? ..but i do agree. it should be our choice. because if one spends the $$ on a very high end sd the performance is usable (not good).
Guys i think to move apps you need to open setting - apps - click the apps - select storage. In the storage section there is option to move it. But not all apps can moved. I use xperia XZs and updated to Oreo. But personally i haven't moved any apps due to XZs 64gb internal so i don't know what is moved to sd card. Just the apk like older system or the data is moved to. Its a little confusing for new phone because new phone detect /data and /sdcard as internal now. And the external sd card detected as /ext-sdcard from i what i know.
XZ1 Compact SD card internal storage
Bumping to see if one of our super devs has come up with a solution. Bought my XZ1C knowing about the 32Gb internal storage, and also knowing that since Marshmallow my Samsung used micro-SSD as internal storage. Now, a week into owning my new XZ1C I'm bumping up against the 32Gb limit, with a 128Gb micro-SSD cooling its heels empty. Unable to find the "move to SD card" option on a single app in Settings/Apps & notifications/App info/<App name>/Storage. Help!

Have you tried uninstalling all of your apps and reinstall after selecting "Force allow on external"? I had the same issue before but I tried to uninstall, "Force allow...", reinstall and it worked except for GMaps.

I just want to say... 32gb is not enough. Don't defend the fact that they have removed how easy it used to be to transfer apps to the SD card on previous xperia models. I just got a new XZ1 and now finding this thread and feeling so annoyed by the fact that they removed this feature. Why would they even remove it? It wasn't hurting anybody. Please Sony, update the firmware to allow this back.
The problem with the "put media on the microSD" approach is that apps like Google Photos would render thumbnails onto the internal storage, no matter where the actual photos are stored or transferred... so, on my previous Xperia, there are more than 4GB of thumbnails eating up my internal storage, every time I delete all the thumbnails, with no option to stop that. This design flaw of Android is just one minor example that can cause big hassle and big storage problems with manufacturers decisions to stop the quite useful feature of moving apps (or even app data and/or cache!) to the external storage causing big time headache for us, users..
Moreover, big apps always contain a lot of media files, which should go to the external storage if one would want to validate the approach.
I am really looking forward to finding a solution on XZ1C to move apps to the SD also on 8, like in 7.1.1.
Any ideas?
