[ROM] [ROOT] [7.0] [SM-P580] [BQK1] SaMBoNeS - 02/10/18 - Samsung Galaxy Tab A series ROMs, Kernels, Recover

Here's a ROM I put together that I figured I'd share with you guys called SaMBoNeS! It's based on BQK1 from the Galaxy Tab A SM-P580 10.1" with s-pen. Most of the Samsung Apps have been removed. I like my ROMS completely barebones and then I install the apps that I want and if you do too then this is for you. It's pre rooted with Magisk. The boot.img will not force encryption. All of the remaining apps have been updated with the latest versions including Play Services, etc. Just wipe, flash the rom and you're good to go. S-Pen functionality remains. Not all the Samsung apps have been removed but most have. A total of 118 apps have been axed. Included is Adaway to block ads. In the screenshot are the apps that are left in the ROM. SaMBoNeS is Xposed compatible.
Instructions:
1) Boot into TWRP
2) Make sure your data is not encrypted. If it is do a Data Format in TWRP then reboot recovery
3) Wipe or Dirty Flash (Wipe recommended)
4) Reboot and you're set
5) Download the Removed Apps zip if you'd like to see what I removed
6) Put any of the removed folders into the ROM zip in system/app or system/priv-app that you want installed before you flash
7) Profit

It boots fine for me. What TWRP are you using? Is your internal storage already decrypted. Do a Format Data in TWRP then try flashing again.

Nope, there is one mirror right now, they've had a few issues since the site upgrade but you should be able to download it now.

Flashed and all is well with root! Thanks dev! I like how cleaned out this rom is, really down to the bare roots and essentials also on the latest nougat. I have a sm-p580 and so far so good.
This is what I did to wipe (taken from the other rom on this device):
From Advanced Wipe, wipe Dalvik/ART Cache, System, Data, Internal Storage & Cache
Install the ROM
Remember to remove the tick mark against reboot before clicking next, do NOT reboot yet!
Wipe Dalvik/ART cache (yes, again, after ROM install)

Thanks for the feedback. I didn't have to re wipe Dalvik/ART after flashing multiple times to test so you may be able to skip that step. My goal is to keep this simple and keep the OP uncluttered as a lot of OP's are totally unorganized.

Yeah I'll provide more feedback as I continue to use. One note I'd say is to add back calendar storage to the included apps. I was unable to use calendar at first, and this being a school tablet for me it was essential. I was unable to locate it in the deleted apps zip you uploaded. I just downloaded calendar storage from online to my system apps folder and then adjusted permissions. After that, all was well. Thanks!

The reason I removed it is because I use an app called Calengoo (It's awesome) and you sign into your Google account through that so you don't need any other calendar services running. I'll add it back in though.

Updated build with more removed apps up in the OP.

Well I've been running this Rom for a few days now and it seems pretty smooth, all we need now is a custom kernel????

I agree. It's a shame there isn't more development on the P580 as it's the superior device with the extra ram, storage and s pen. It's kind of like a big Galaxy Note.

Any plans on getting your hands on P585? Was about to flash this on my SM-P585Y since they are similar but I realized I would need carrier specific apps like messaging, contacts, dialer, etc. Thanks.

Did calendar syncing get added back in? I'm having issues with it if it did. Downloaded today from the op and keep getting calendar storage errors on my P580.

No, not that that I remember. I moved on to another ROM awhile ago though. Nothing I found allowed formatting micro sd card as internal.

Got 10.28.1.0 installed but file explorer does not work.

Also it will not let me d/l any apps from the App Market and it says disk is full.
I am assuming you're talking about MIUI 10.28.1.0. So what steps did you do to flash it? Were you coming from an MTD rom already (CM7)? Is there anything else not working?
You should probably to a clean wipe and install it properly.
Yes it is MIUI 10.28.1.0.
I rebooted to recovery. Wiped cached and dalvik and wiped data. Did install from SD disk. I cannot uninstall programs and the file manager crashes.
What is considered a clean wipe & proper install?
Sounds like data didn't wipe properly somehow. I would try Odin back to ED05 or some other stock package, then go to Miui 10.28.1. 10.28.1 is great seems to be the most stable version since 9.16.
Is there a thread on how to do that?

[Q] DZ's jb 10A2 - cache and data

I can't post in the regular forum - so hopefully someone can answer this question here.
I updated to DZ's 10A2 from 9 this morning. No problems - except there appear to be broken file links, which I imagine is due to the sdcard renames.
For instance: I can open Google Listen, but none of the podcasts will download and there is an error finding a file at /sdcard/com.google.etc. Also Evernote has no notes in it. Swiftkey can't load a language pack. Gmail and calendar app work fine.
The instructions said coming from 9-10A2 you shouldn't have to wipe data and cache but it hadn't been tested.
So my question's are:
1. Is the problem I'm seeing because I didn't wipe data/cache?
2. Can someone let DZ know that his instructions might need to be updated that going from his 9B1 to 10A2 will probably need a data/cache wipe?

I dont know anything about Google listen since I dont use it. But for Evernote, are you saying the notes you had are not showing up anymore? This could be due to the fact that CM10 is back to the old storage method. CM9 had the flip flop mod in there that made you external card show as the Internal storage so we had more storage space for internal storage. So if your notes were saved on the internal storage on CM9, which was actually your external card, you may have to move them back to the internal storage. You can find everything on CM10 in storage/sdcard0 (for internal) and sdcard1 (for external)
EDIT: And I dont know where you read you shouldnt have to wipe data and cache. Its ALWAYS a good idea to wipe everything when coming from one ROM to another.

Thanks. Looks like I'll just wipe. It's just a pain to reinstall all those apps and get my phone screens setup the way I like.
I read about not having to wipe from the install instructions:
Installation:
This can be installed over CM7/CM9 or BLUR but you MUST wipe data and cache if from CM7/BLUR. (CM9 should work w/o wipe, but it's untested).
I know it's always a good idea to wipe, but I was hoping I could get away with it. The phone works okay, it's just some apps that aren't finding their data. Not a big deal.
Titanium Backup is the best way to get all your apps back with their data. Thats what I use and dont lose any data when I go to a new ROM or SBF.

I've used it before, but it seems like every time I read flash instructions they say: "Don't use TiBu" to restore from a previous ROM!
It looks like it would have been okay this time - so lesson learned - might as well use it just in case.
Are there particular things you should/should not backup in prep for a new ROM? Just wondering.
Thanks
Apps and app data are fine to restore. SYSTEM data is what causes problems. Don't bother with system data.

Thanks - I'll start doing that. Appreciate the help.
The wipe seems to have fixed all but Listen, which I guess is a lost cause. I remember a couple of times when a download would foobar and it was just screwed forever. No way to really clear it. Apparently it's not supported since August anyway so using a different program.

[Q] Just unlocked and rooted! Now what?

not really new to this stuff, but i am when it comes to the note 2.
props to the guys that put CASUAL together, with little effort other than installing the drivers from the samsung website, a few tries and reboots, 3rd go and it only took maybe 3 minutes to do the work for me.
so, now i am looking for a way to debloat the rom that came with my phone, not ready to jump into the custom flashing yet, but i would like to remove a few things i never use that verizon drops into the rom.
from past experience deleting from the /system/app and /data directories caused issues with stability on my htc rezound.
also one other thought, with the lg enlighten, rebooting with /system as RW would bootloop the phone, the rezound didn't mind at all, how does the note 2 react to being RW?
any suggestions to debloating the current running rom are welcome, i have already had some for custom roms, but more input would be ok too.
Get titanium backup and remove those apps.
Then I'd make a backup and when you are ready to custom flash, get cleanrom. From the sounds of it that is what you are looking for.
that's what i had said before, but eventually i would like to flash a modded rom, but right now i am thinking about just debloating this one, for fun.
one thing that concerns me, has anyone flashed a rom the s-pen doesn't work on?
is that built into the mainboard or a rom specific thing?
wondering so i know to be careful of what i flash, love my s-pen lol

The S-pen is Samsung software that only works on Touchwiz (Samsung based Roms also known as TW) framework, said framework has yet to be ported to AOSP and most likely will not be. It is very rare for TW framework to be ported in a way that works on AOSP Roms.
The S-pen will work on all Roms no matter what but the special features, like pushing the button to make a screenshot, will be there on TW Roms but not AOSP Roms. With Vanilla Rootbox you can make the floating dot show up on the screen when using the S-pen and the other Roms have some implementation of that. If you want to replace some of the features on AOSP Roms you should look into getting GMD Spen Control from the market, also Plasma kernel has new S-pen features built in. It still won't be exactly the same as running a TW ROM but is close enough for me.
All of the custom TW Roms will have full S-pen support just like the stock ROM and in some cases have a little bit extra.

So is flashing a rom done from the sdcard as normal or is it different in any way from a standard flash, new to twrp.
Yup. Just put it on your SD card and flash. Wipe everything but your external card before you flash. lots more to it but that's the cliffnotes version.

You don't have to and you typically don't want to wipe your internal SD memory to flash a rom. From TWRP recovery you should do a Factory rest (which wipes data but not internal SD memory, the cache and the Dalvik cache). After flashing you should wipe cache and Dalvik cache again but not wipe data. To do that go into the Advanced wipe area to only wipe those 2 and not data again.

I corrected my post that yes you also want to wipe data but only from recovery.
What you don't want to do is use a file manager and delete data that way from internal memory. Nor do you normally want to reformat any internal or external memory from recovery.

ok so quick once over, same as the rez, but i only need to do a factory reset and wipe system, caches and flash?
so i can keep internal storage intact no issue?
what about boot?
slightly different from the rez.
just another awesome thing i found for this phone, wondering how well it works and if i could use it to update twrp or maybe even revert to my flashaholic ways with a simple tap and go.

btw, twrp is the most awesome recovery i have ever used, along with titanium backup, which i have never used, i now have a debloated stock rom backed up.
i haven't been this thrilled since i achieved s-off on my rez.

Well I use the second options in TWRP, I can't remember what it is now, under the wipe menu that you have to type yes for that formats the internal memory to get rid of all the BS. It doesn't hurt as long as you know what you are doing. And as long as you only delete old folders that are no longer in use everything will be fine.
TWRP doesn't have any dangerous wipe options at the current moment.

You can use it to update TWRP and download ROMs but I wouldn't flash my Roms from it, you can flash from it but I personally wouldn't. There is also a app named ROM Manager you can flash Roms from but there are a lot of issues when using ROM Manager.
I personally use the Goo Manger app to keep up with my Roms updates.
In TWRP after you click the Wipe button and go to the Wipe sub menu I always click advanced wipe and go in and wipe Data, Cache, Dalvik, and System and then I back out to the Wipe sub menu and click the right hand button, you'll have to type yes for it to work, and that gets rid of all the BS folders and crap so you can start completely fresh. You don't have to do that if you don't want to, I personally like my phone being completely clean when flashing a new ROM.
Yes you can keep internal and boot intact.
All you have to do to go to a new ROM when you boot into TWRP is click Wipe and then slide the little slider in the Wipe sub menu, I believe it says swipe for Factory Reset. That is all you have to do to Clean Flash a ROM.
Something else fun about TWRP is that you can theme it. Here is a TWRP theme collection on XDA:

If you use Titanium to back up apps (which you can do together) and their data before flashing you can restore the apps and data all at once after the flash without having to install each one by one from Google play store. Be sure not to restore system apps or data (no need to back them up either) because it may affect the new rom.
The good part of not reformatting your internal or external memory from TWRP is that your photos, music, etc.will remain after the flash. Even if you choose factory wipe or wipe data in TWRP.

I used titanium backup root to debloat a little, so I am kind of good for now, but made a nandroid of this rooted, debloated stock rom.
I think I found a twrp update with that goo.im app, but I am sure there are more than 4 roms to choose from, I have seen jedi which seemed like what I would want, stock decked out with features and the multi app does all apps, so I am kind of ready to do my first flash.
From what I get from what both or all of you have told me, swipe to factory reset, wipe system and internal, leave boot and others alone.
I wanted to set twrp to save to my sdcard, but didn't see an option to do so.
And thanks for all the input guys.

All you need to do before flashing is the one Factory reset wipe on the first screen of the Wipe area. Just as TWRP advises on that screen. After the flash most go back to the Wipe area then the Advanced area and wipe only cache and Dalvik cache. Your first reboot will take a minute or 2 so be patient.
To save backup to the external card go to the Backup area and at the bottom where it says where it will backup press on it and then you can change the location. It just looks like a label and doesn't look like a button but it is. I would just backup the default checked items. Even that will be 3-4 gigs.

You should also back up the EFS in your first nandroid just in case you ever lose your IMEI or any of that good stuff. Then store that backup in a safe secure space. You won't have to back up the EFS again after the initial backup as long as you always keep that backup safe.

Well Spen with work on all the Roms, the only issue is that it doesn't have all the software features on AOSP as it does on TW. It will have all the same features as stock as long as it is a Touchwiz, TW, ROM. Moon ROM, Jedi, CleanRom (both versions), Beans, MeanBean, Goodness, etc. And you can still add a lot of your stock Spen features back with GND Spen Control.

[Q] Wondering if i can do this

I have a Verizon droid RAZR that the screen has cracked in many places. I have bought a new phone and have no plans for ever using this as a phone. What I would like to do is install a ROM over the stock one, not dual boot both. I was also wanting to get rid of all of the phone stuff, no Verizon apps, no SMS, and no phone logs. I would use this like a tablet and would love to save as much space as possible. I don't need the moto docks (I don't have one). Basicly strip this thing down to just bare necessities. Is it even possible to do this? If so is there a ROM that gets great battery life? Thanks for reading my question.
Nomad7801
You can flash ROM on your stock slot and then delete the useless apks.
Try any AOSP ROM. It should work fine.
Tapatalk with RAZR HD
I have downloaded tonyt's aokp rom. I have extracted the rom to its own folder and have looked at the apps in the app folder. System>app. I am not sure which of these I can get rid of. I would like to get ride of anything that is VZW or phone related just keeping maybe the contacts. I dont know what apps should be gotten rid of with out breaking the rom. Sorry I'm a noob. All I have done was flash a few roms, never tried to remove apks before. Do I need a cellphone broadcast for location services like maps and for the in browser location? I have safestrap installed. It will not let me flash a rom over stock rom. I am trying to find a way to get cwm or twrp installed instead.
ok bricked my phone. Device would restart and get the red moto logo, then nothing, blank black screen. rebooted the phone and could not get to safestrap. Used Matt's utility to install jb and reroot phone.
The procedure that I used to install the rom on my stock image is as follows:
1. copied rom zip to micro sd card
2. booted to safestrap
3. wiped cache, delvic, and system
4. installed rom zip through safestrap
5. no errors got success
6. reboot got nothing
I think anything could still happen even if SafeStrap didnt indicate any error after installation, that's why backup is important, also this ;

You will need to do a complete wipe when flashing a new ROM, including /data.
Use latest SS. And make sure the ROM is compatible with the latest SS.

How do I format the internal storage? I have about 3 roms I have running and I have games and apps that I have uninstalled that left behind folders in root folders and some apps that did not get uninstalled also left behind some data. I tried doing a factory reset and also tried using safestrap to wipe internal but it fails. I made a folder in my system folder and put 2 pics in it then factory reset, wiped system data, and checked every box in the advance wipe options and that folder (along with the others) are still there.

Every slot has its own /data partition.
After you activate a slot, wipe /data along with system and cache.
That is called full wipe. It will remove all your apps, files and user settings will be deleted.
Then flash your desired ROM.

[URGENT] Phone stuck on Just a Sec screen, HELP !

I am using Redmi Note 4 SD625. I was easily running AEX {9.0}, without any problems.
I decided to switch to HavocOS. After installing the zip, and also Gapps {pico}, my phone got stuck on Just a Sec screen after Language Selection. I already tried using different ROMS, clearing Internal Storage, Formatting Data using TWRP, but nothing is working. I really need to get this device going. Please Help. Also, my phone's system UI keeps crashing while on Just a Sec Screen [ black screen and then instant refresh of notification panel]. Is this something to do with my gaps? Please help.:crying:

Just try it once more.
1. Update your TWRP. Use OrangeFox 9 which you can find here. Boot into your recovery and install OrangeFox:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/re...-orangefox-recovery-project-t3775933?&ampcf=1
2. Update your firmware. Most people prefer firmware 9.6.1.0 which you can find here. Just flash it in OrangeFox recovery:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/xi..._V9.6.1.0.NCFMIFD_2ffa61cdd6_7.0.zip/download
3. Download the ROM and GApps you want to use and save them to your SD card.
4. Boot into recovery and make all the necessary wipes (Internal, Data etc) and also format "Data". You will have to type "YES"
5. Install the ROM you want to use, install GApps and reboot your phone

You can use internal storage as well.
After you do all the wipes, you will need a computer and can then copy the ROM and GApps to internal storage.
Using a SD card, you won't need a computer.

Maybe it's a problem with the ROM you are using?
You can try to remove your Sim cards. Remove your Sim cards, do the setup and once everything works, put them back it.

If system UI keeps crashing, you probably didn't wipe your system before flashing a new ROM.
In OrangeFox go to:
Wipe - Advanced Wipe
and select everything except external storage and "Cust"
then swipe to wipe
After that go back to:
Wipe - Format Data
type "Yes" and format Data.
After that is done, flash the ROM and GApps right afterwards.

Restart to recovery
Wipe - Format Data and type yes.
After that works, wipe everything and install the ROM and GApps.
Alternatively, Wipe and then "Swipe to Factory Reset" like in the screenshot attached.
If this doesn't work, maybe there's a problem because you encrypted your phone. Maybe this will help then:

It wont be solved I assure you. There is no probelm with gapps either as i have tried an older (feb 19 built gapps package) and it didn"t worked with any rom(havoc,rr). Try to flash the older Pixel Experience april build . Check your private messege inbox as i have sent you the link. It will surely work.

Yup it worked! But there are 2 problems,
1] My SIM card are not being detected.
2] The phone is stuck on Phone Is Starting, i tried installing Nova with adb, but the default app selection settings still is blank. (after finishing the setup, which was a pain in the ass since i had no keyboard for some reason.

"SYSTEM UI KEEPS CRASHING" FACED THE SAME ERROR A YEAR AGO!!!???
I flashed miui via miflash or any rom via twrp, the same error. Last option was to flash stock ROM , lock bootloader and sent to mi service centre.
They said that the motherboard got damaged and replaced with a new one..

Nevermind! This ROM is working completely fine. Sadly i lost all the customization features , but i guess you reap what you sow. I did messed up while installing a new ROM, as you guys mentioned. Thank you all for your support!
