How to unbrick an Amlogic S912 H96 Pro TV stick dongle mini PC by shorting pins and flashing Android 7.1.2 + TWRP + Magisk
As this is my first post, I am unable to include links or link pictures.
If you want the full how-to with links and pictures, please google:
"[SOLVED] Amlogic S912 H96 Pro TV stick dongle mini PC bricked"
The how-to is on the FreakTab forums.
This how-to has been translated from instructions found on this Russian 4pda.ru forum post.
Most of the links are from a Russian cloud storage site. If they don't work anymore, you can find what is needed with a simple Google search.
I am basically organizing the relevant information and links so that it's available in English and easier to understand.
:::::: Disclaimer ::::::
As flashing and shorting this or any device may result in permanent damage to the device, you must proceed with caution and under your own responsibility.
I will not be held responsible in any way if damage of any sort is caused.
I would recommend double checking every step before execution.
Now with that out of the way, let's get to it!
Things you will need:
- A Bricked Amlogic S912 H96 Pro TV stick dongle mini PC
- A short USB A to USB A cable. You can cut old phone charger cables and connect the same colored wires but keep it short. I'd sat 20cm in total. Shorter is better.
- Micro SD card bigger than 2GB but smaller than 32GB (device doesn't support more than that).
- Small flat-head screwdriver to pry open the dongle and short the pin connections.
- Computer
Links to additional software and files that are needed will be provided in the instructions.
The Russian cloud storage site is in Russian on PC browser. Use Google Translate to translate the page.
In Chrome browser you should automatically have the option to translate the page on the fly.
Opening the dongle:
We'll start with opening the dongle.
Use the small flat-head screwdriver to pry open the dongle casing.
It's not sealed very tight and should be easy to open.
If you do it gently, nothing should break and you will be able to close it back just like new.
Once you've opened the the dongle, you will need to remove the black heat sync in order to get to the connections that need to be shorted.
The heat sync is on there with some thermal tape and can be gently lifted. The tape should stay fully intact. Don't get the tape dirty because you'll be sticking it back on.
In the following pictures you can see the two pin solder connections that need to be shorted. They're the left two pins out of four, marked by a red circle.
Shorting and getting the device detected:
OK, now that we know where to short we can install the Burning Tool software and hopefully get the device detected on the computer.
Download the USB_Burning_Tool v2.0.8 - If the link no longer works you can find this tool with a simple Google search.
Unzip and open the folder.
Make sure you have the device driver installed which can be found in the WorldCup_Device folder. Install by running InstallDriver.exe.
After the driver has installed. go back to the main folder. Right click on USB_Burning_Tool.exe and "Run as administrator".
Once open, change the language to English like so:
Now lets connect the dongle to the PC with our USB cable via the OTG port.
If you're in the state that I was in, the dongle will most likely not be detected.
This is where we short the pins.
Take your small flat-head screwdriver and short the two left pin connections by a touch of the screwdriver on both pins at the same time.
If the board isn't totally fried you should see that it's detected in the Burning Tool.
This should work regardless of Driver Signature Verification being enabled or not.
Flashing the rom:
At this point you should download the specific rom file aml_7.1_s912_q9377-S912_XGO_LP_mac-20171206.img that can be found here.
Download the zip and extract the .img file.
Import the .img file to the Burning Tool:
It will take a few moments for the tool to verify the file.
Once verified, un-check both "Erase flash" and "Erase bootloader" on the right hand side.
Leave the rest as is.
Click start and wait for the file to be loaded to the dongle 100%.
This will take around five minutes.
Once you see 100%:Burning successfully in the tool you can rest assure that the dongle is working!
You can now click on Stop and disconnect the dongle.
Close is up nicely. You will not need to open it again (crossing fingers).
Last steps to make it perfect:
Connect the dongle to a TV and let it boot.
The first boot will take a few minutes.
Don't be too excited yet! Wifi and Bluetooth are probably not working.
We need to restart the device into recovery mode and do a backup with TWRP just so a backup folder will be created.
TWRP should already be flashed on the device. If not, you can download it from here.
Shut down the device and insert the MicroSD card.
Boot into recovery by pressing and holding the reset button with a paperclip until you see the recovery.
This actually blew my mind because I was sure that this device does not have a reset button but apparently it does!
You will see a very small hole on the back:
Once in TWRP, select Backup, select storage as SD card and perform the backup.
After the backup has completed, unplug the device and remove the MicroSD card.
Plug the card into the computer.
Now we are going to basically copy backup files over the existing files in the backup folder that was created just now.
These files can be found here.
Download and extract the folder.
Drill down to the deepest folder and copy the files to the deepest folder on the MicroSD card.
Insert the MicroSD card back into the device and boot to recovery again.
This time select restore, select SD as storage and restore.
After the restore is done, reboot the device and wait for android to boot up.
Good job! You'r basically done!
The only thing that's left is to change the language to English.
In the settings you'll see a small globe icon, select it and find English.
DONE!
You have now fully unbricked your device and are now running Android 7.1.2 with TWRP recovery.
If you would like to root with Magisk it can be found here alongside Magisk Manager APK.
Just flash in TWRP and install the APK in android.
This is my first time actually tinkering with a TV box so I'll try to help as much as I can if anyone has a question.

Hi
the device disconnecting everytime at 2%, pls help

Hi, did you find the rom?

[Q] Zenithink ZT180 / Elonex Etouch 1000ET Original Reset/Upgrade

Sooooo this is a little embarrassing but PLEASE, I need help here .
My friend has a knackered old Elonex Etouch 1000ET (AKA Zenithink ZT-180 I think) that he is determined to hang on to but has locked himself out of (forgot his pin). I've assured him that I could easily facctory reset this for him and/or install a newer / custom ROM on there to help it perform better than it does at the moment - from what I can gather it's running an OLD version of Android, possibly Eclair and it's slow as hell.
Now I've been at this for 2 hours now and I can't work out for the life of me how to do it on this thing. I've been rooting / flashing phones for years without trouble but this is really doing my head in!
Here's what I've tried:
- Connected via the OTG port but Windows (Win7 64bit) doesn't want to install the drivers and then can't find it in device manager
- Tried the above while booting into 'update mode' (Holding home button or the left volume key and booting) - result is 'No zImage_update'
- Copied all relevant files (ZT_Bx.boot, zImage, system.pack.img, userdata.pack.img) to a folder called zt-update on the root of the SD card but still get the 'No zImage_update' message.
I get that this is a piece of crap tablet but it's a favour for a mate and I need to get this done. Please please PLEASE can somebody help here lol. I just want to wipe the damn thing and get it working again.
Cheers.
Fixed
For those looking for a solution to this, I found out a way:
- First go to http://www.elonex.com/index.php/support/etouch/1000et/ and download the elonex.com/support/etouch/1000ET-FWv1122.zip
- Then go here and follow this post to reformat your MicroSD card with a fresh FAT32: http://www.slatedroid.com/topic/198...hing-roms/page__st__40__p__219055#entry219055
- Extract the 'zt-update' file from the first zip and put it in the root folder of your squeaky clean SD card
- Pop the SD card back into the tablet, hold the volume down button and turn it on.
You're welcome.

Found a way !!!
Hi there,
I managed to successfully root my Mi Box 3 w firmware 1.3.114 . Thought I'd share
Tools needed:
- Male to Micro USB Female Converter Connector
- USB stick
Software needed:
- Mi image 1.3.106:
yadi.sk/d/Yvr1jYflm6GZR or
dropbox.com/s/72x76khqjlpekap/MiBOX3_jurassicpark_gitv_1.3.106.386.zip
- Kingo root for windows
kingoapp dot com
First you will need to downgrade the firmware to version 1.3.106.
Extract the contents of the downloaded zip file to a formatted usb tick (Fat32).
(Should be two files: xiaomi_update and update.zip)
Put the stick in your Mi Box and boot in recovery: unplug power, press and hold back + ok button ( or Home and Menu while rebooting ) while plugging the power back in. The remote should be nearby and facing the box. Do not let go of the buttons until it booted in recovery. the flashing should start and finish automatically.
After first boot make sure you disable Intelligent Update.
Second step is to root your box with Kingo.
Enable USB/ADB debugging and reboot (it's right there in the menu under security settings).
Install Kingo root on your pc or laptop and connect your box using a micro usb charging cable. This is where you'll need the adapter. Start Kingo Root, follow instructions and choose 'Root again'.
This will take a minute... done!
Any question let me know I will be glad to help .

It works great, the hardware is a beast! The only important issue I encountered so far is that sometimes it exits the video player, some other times just pauses the playback on Netflix, every 10 minutes or so. On You Tube it exits fullscreen mode, which can be quite annoying. The only solution I could find is this:
- In Settings (not the Chinese app, but the one that comes inside Shafa Market, or even better, make a google search for "startSettings.apk", download it , then install it on your Mi Box, this way you´ll no longer need Shafa Market), go to About the Phone section, and click repeatedly on the Build Version, till you are granted Developer rights.
- Back to Options, go to Developer Options, and change the number of background processes from Standard to None. You´ll have to repeat this last step every time the box reboots, but not after sleep/wake.
Done.
How did you install Google Services and does Play Store work ?

I suppose you already have a bluetooth/wifi/usb keyboard/air mouse at hand, and switched to English by now, if not, please refer to this post:
http://www.cnx-software.com/2016/04/12/how-to-change-language-to-english-and-install-apps-remotely-on-xiaomi-mi-box-3-enhanced/
I skipped Shafa Market, I downloaded instead startSettings.apk from here:
https://www.google.es/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&ved=0ahUKEwjb6Ir4pcjNAhUCNhoKHaj6BdcQFgghMAA&url=https%3A%2F%2Fdrive.google.com%2Ffolderview%3Fid%3D0B16bkj0QSkYnfjc1YXQ1YU1sSGVGOHZqY3FjWUNabUVJd1dSTFpSb1BZbnU4cVZQMi1hMUk%26usp%3Dsharing&usg=AFQjCNE5hETwCJgxaa0KE0MtCkzU_tJF-w&sig2=Xk-SKY_nzqTE7aLmkhevZg
Copy it on a pendrive (you might want to copy the other apk-s for the next step, as well), then install it by inserting it in either USB port. You´ll be prompted to allow installation from unknown sources, click yes 允许. It´s all you need to have on your mi box for tweaking, like changing the language, instead of shafa market. Once opened, scroll down to the globe icon, and change it to English.
Then, follow really carefully this step-by-step guide, it´s a bit cumbersome, but it definitely works:
http://flying8pus.blogspot.com.es/
A few pointers, though:
1 - When rooting the device (the same thing here, use a pendrive, download all the apk-s you need on it, and install them from there), be patient, in some cases people had to wait a whole night for the 100% and the victor´s cup to show up. Check it out, and if it´s not done after 10-15 minutes, you´re out of luck, you might as well just go about your day, it will be over at some point. Make sure that in the mi box menu the sleep mode is disabled (set it from 30 minutes, I think, to Never), and don´t touch it, don´t open any apps, let 360Permroot do its magic.
2 - After installing Play Store DON´T OPEN IT! Install afterwards You Tube, then open this one. You´ll be prompted then to download Google Web Services (or something like that) in order to function properly. If you open Play Store before You Tube, you´ll never be prompted, and it will not work, at least that´s what I´ve been told, and I trust the guy (my brother).
Unfortunately, very few apps are recognised by Play Store as compatible with the device (luckily mx player is one of them), but you need it anyway, otherwise some Google services might not work. What I use instead for ease of use is uptodown app market, not even close as abundant as Play Store, but I get by. Once you install an app from there, it will update as soon as a newer version is available, and it´s not as picky as Play Store in terms of compatibility.
Take your time and good luck.

Install Kingo root on your pc or laptop and connect your box using a micro usb charging cable. This is where you'll need the adapter. Start Kingo Root, follow instructions and choose 'Root again'.
This will take a minute... done!
Any question let me know I will be glad to help .

Can you verify the model number on your box? Mdz-16-aa or mdz-16-ab? I did a bunch of research into rooting this box months ago and no one had found a way. I'm disappointed in the mdz-16-ab ever since I bought it. It has become more of a paper weight to me.

KIII android tv box[Help/Advice]

I have 2 different android boxes, on the KIII tv box, I like to run torrents while I watch youtube videos. Problem is with this box it closes the app as soon as I switch to another.
I already check the box in developer settings to not kill any apps in background, It still does.
Is it something I'm missing? My mini mx does not do this is this just a KIII thing, where I can only run 1 app at a time?
Sent from my SM-G935V using XDA-Developers mobile app
Its something in the built.prop, in the past i knew what to change but i forgot it...
dammit i got the same problem with my friends box. mine is fixed for this problem but i cant remember how i did it...
can no one help ?
Finally found it....
So you have to use a explorer with root access and delete or edit "allowbackgroundapp.list" located at "/system/etc"
I use to edit the list and add the names of apps i wanne run in the background, like "org.xbmc.kodi" , "tv.twitch.android.app" or "org.mozilla.firefox".
Actually pretty easy, hope i could
Question is what is with you box ?! Start in Bluescreen, bootloop, go into a mode !? My english is not the best but the first idea is download the stock rom version and flash it with Burn USB Card on a SD card (you must format it in the tool) and then it will work i think.
If it not work, use USB burning tool but you need a male 2 male usb cable for it.
I have flash my box today with a wrong custom rom and have only a bluescreen (shoot my Mainboard driver i think or HDMI) but with a stock ROM i have start a flash and an half hour later (i cant see what the box do) i make the box power of and the box start nice again.
Please tell us what for a box you have, what for a CPU and RAM version and the name of the box.
In China the guys clone a clone :S its hard to help. Best way for flashing is to open the box and look on the chips what you have

It sounds like a Roku stick and you did something to brick it. Unfortunately you may not be able to recover it as I've not seen any restore method
To fix this box and I have done this to 3 of them already. All of them are the 64GB 4GB ones. Good thing you crashed the onboard rom otherwise it would not start recovery. Get an SD card in 16GB or larger. Look for SD_Firmware_Tool.exe online and the file you want to put on the SDcard is the Android 9.0 PIE is 3318_9.0-TVBOX-Z4_1025.img
Once the SD card is created put it in the Android TV box. Then power on the box and the recovery will begin on its own right away. Once its done. It will tell you to remove the SD card which it will reboot itself once its out. Then it will run an Erase mode setting up the user partition which takes a min. Then it will boot. The first boot takes a few mins. As long as you see the colorful splash screen your good just wait.
Get the unit online and use the update tool to grab and install the latest 9.0 pie update. Once your done its recovered.
Now I have found the SDcard I used to recover these devices once its formatted it will not boot while inserted in the android box. I think a boot flag was set and since it can't locate the files it refuses to boot. The cheap work around is use a brand new Sdcard that was not used for recovery process.
I also noticed the Wifi and Ethernet will not work at the same time in 9.0 like it did in 8.1. The remotes works fine and Bluetooth works still. If you want Kodi latest version uninstall the KDplayer that comes with it. I recommend getting rid of the apps you do not use.
I also notice the Playstore does not install apps but if you use a computer or phone to pick your apps and tell it to install to the TV box it will work then or manually install your .APK's also works. Once the programs are installed they will update afterwards.
I have been looking for Android 10 but no luck yet.
I never ever had luck using the rockchip USB to USB cable to PC to work. It will error out no matter what. Forget going that route.

all you gotta do is have a sdcard with nothing on it. Make it fat32 on the PC. Open the SD card firmware tool. Make sure the top field has your SD card listed.
Click Upgrade firmware option box.
Then load the firmware file by clicking the firmware button.
Then click create.
This will take awhile to write 2GB of data to an SDcard.
Once it's done. Put it on the TV box with the power off. Plug the HDMI cable in. Insert the SDcard in the TF slot.
Then power on the tv box and it will start programming process right away. Leave it be since it takes awhile to do its thing. It will tell you to remove the SD card when done. Once the SD card is removed the box will reboot on its own. You will see the message erasing which takes about 2 minutes. Then it will boot with the T9 logo screen. The first boot takes about 4 minutes to finally start up.
Once you get it online use the updater tool on the menu option. It will update the box. Keep the Sd card just incase it does brick itself. It happened once on one of my boxes. Just pop in the recovery SD card to start over again if it happens to you.
Note for some reason the SD card you use for recovery will not allow the tv box to boot if decide to use it for storage. I believe it sets a boot flag in the SD card firmware and fails when the files are gone. Not sure how to clear it. Hey they are dirt cheap anyways for a new one.
Oh and do not reinsert this sdcard after you set it up. A power cycle will start the recovery process again.
Thank you very much for your help. I try it and tell you how it went

Hi, thank you for this detailed reply.
I am having the same problem with T9 (RK 3318) TV box 64GB 4GB bricked with wrong firmware when I tried to upgrade from Android 8.1 to 9.0.
There is nothing on it whenever I powered up this TV box.
Can I use the same method above to recover the bootup?
All of us would appreciate your advise.

Yes it works. I was able to update all three of the boxes I own to the 9.0 Version. The playstore on the 9.0 sucks. Better off installing and maintaining your updates with pureAPK instead of playstore. Remember the SD card will not be useable on the T9 boxes after carrying out the update for additional storage. It can always be used to restore the boxes if something happens. I was able to use the SD card in other devices.

I m trying to create the SD Card with img file but failed with error message (attached picture).
My TV box is made of RK3318, not RK 3328 chipset. I m trying out your method..
Do I need to short any pin to unbrick the Circuit board?
I appreciate your advice, please. Thank you.
Is that a 2Tb card? Use a 32GB one or smaller as long its 8GB to 32GB in size. There was no pin shorting needed. Just create the SDcard and put it on the TV box port and power on tv box.

Hi. thks for your kind guidance.
I managed to create Bootrom Img disk using SD Card. However, my T9 TV box cannot be powered up. I suspect that the IC chip was damaged. This TV box was bricked when the vendor supplied me the wrong Img file. I realised it after I opened up the TV box cover.
Time to dump off the TV box.
Good afternoon,
I am looking for a stock version for the T9 TV Box 32GB/4GB RK3318. some months ago, I bought a TUREWELL T9, however it is not allowing to run Disney+ anymore and I am not able to upgrade the device. Hence I was hoping that the above solution would work with a stock version of Andoid.
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Some Photos of how the rom may look using Square Home 3 as default launcher :
How to Install
- You can use a USBmale-USBmale cable and USB Burning Tool. If you don’t have the cable you can easily make it by yourself, possibly using some old cables (from old smartphones etc). If you need USB Burning Tool you can download it from here https://mega.nz/file/E0MHyaDa#n5BHOVwobmWxLmfgnD9Bn8BWjjfH4RLgesKTiiuwFzY
After you install UBT you must copy the LICENCE directory https://mega.nz/file/8lECwC4R#AcA4CsaZVf23X-nNPPURBkCz0IFvSjaCaCMERrLq6pc
- You unrar the custom rom (to get the same name file as img), load it to UBT and press “Start”
- Connect one end of cable to USB port of PC and the other end to your port of the box (usually the 2.0 USB port and NOT the blue one which is 3.0). You must wait until 100% is reached and only then disconnect the cable. After starting the box you have to wait 4-5 minutes for everything to be installed.
In case that “burning” does not start, you must repeat the same procedure but additionally pressing the “Reset” button (gently pressing it in the center of AV port) for 2-3 seconds.
- Instead of UBT you can install the rom using an sd card and Burn Card Maker (instructions at Post #50)
NOTE : At post #46 you will find a special version ONLY for H96 max X3 with Blue Board and wifi chip IT6334.
To pass the safety net (as in screenshot n.5) please read here https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/safetynet-fix-google-update-march-2020-t4063679

Please try again to download UBT and install it.
After that you have to download the "licence" directory (choose to download it as zip). Then unzip it and copy the whole "licence" directory to where you installed the USB Burning Tool v. 2.2.0.
I hope everything is clear now.

Hmm, when I put the TWRP zip on an FAT32 USB stick I can't see it when I reboot in recovery. Tried normal USB and USB3 port.

You can use either a USB stick or an sd card. Better format it to Fat32. I usually use USB stick (it is more easy to insert and remove).
- I suppose you have the stock recovery.
- You write "reboot update" in the terminal emulator and press "ENTER"
- in the recovery menu you have to choose to update from external source (either "update from sd" or "update from udisk" - the 2nd being your USB stick)
- Then you choose from there TWRP_322.zip
- After pressing "ENTER" the box reboots to TWRP (temporary) and you backup any partiition you want.
One proposed setting for TASKBAR:
- General Settings (check boxes) -Collapse Taskbar when selecting items - Automatically collapse Taskbar - Launch on boot
- Appearance - Hide button while Taskbar is collapsed - Show shortcut icon for pinned apps - Visual feedback when selecting icons
- Advanced features - Enable widget support -Allow third-party app intervation
After that the bar will be completely Hidden.By just clicking at the lower left of the screen you can open TASKBAR (just click there-without seing anything). You can hide it again clicking at the arrow (right end of screen).
Finally you should choose in Αdvanced Features - Navigation bar buttons - all 3 buttons or which you want.
My Vontar G10 air mouse doesn't work properly with your mod it seems while it does work with the original firmware.
I can't power up or control my box with the G10 air mouse and when I use my other standard remote to power it up I need to reconnect the G10 USB dongle before the air mouse is working. It doesn't matter which USB port I use, both don't work.
Is there any setting that I could look at to fix this?

OK. This was a known problem with these G10 airmouses. Somebody even said that it was the problem of dongles and not airmouses. Since you say that it functioned properly with the original firmware I suppose something is fixed now. Did you use the latest firmware of 12/8/2020? I also think that I read something like that. I probably have to find what was actually changed.
Anyway just for the "history" here is what was known about these airmouses (everything from 4pda):
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q.......The puck came, bought in Vontara, the g10 remote control falls off
A.......Did you buy everything at once, as a set? Or is the G10 remote separately?
Try to do it like this:
== There is such a tricky option against dumping the console.
Take any USB hub, insert into it both a dongle from the remote control and a dongle from a wireless computer mouse (you can also use a wired mouse), the hub itself into a USB 2.0 set-top box. After rebooting, when the remote has fallen off, you need to move the mouse and (or) press any mouse button or the wheel, the remote will come to life again. == It's still better than juggling the remote's dongle. True, I have not tried it on this console, but it can ride with G10s
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
turns out from experience that the remotes themselves have nothing to do with it, it's the dongles, I ordered the Vontara G10s separately from the console in the official store, my friend ordered the console with the G10s together in another store. his remote control falls off.
He brought me a remote control with a dongle, they decided to ponder and such a chip came out.
The remotes are the same, except for the vontar inscription on my remote, the dongles are also the same.
And the trick is what - my dongle - my remote -
my dongle didn't dump - his remote - there is no blade
his dongle - his remote - blade
his dongle - my remote - blade
output - it's a matter of dongles, who got what difference?
There is such a cunning option against the dump of the remote control.
Take any USB hub, insert into it both a dongle from the remote control and a dongle from a wireless computer mouse (you can also use a wired mouse), the hub itself into a USB 2.0 set-top box. After rebooting, when the remote control has fallen off, you need to move the mouse and (or) press any mouse button or wheel, the remote comes to life again.
It turns out this method works. Checked on the drain on the G10s consoles, and most importantly, you don't need to press anything.
