Does anyone else experience intermittent stuttering / lag? - Sony Xperia XZ1 Questions & Answers

I have a question. When generally using the device, it randomly becomes very slow and the framerate of the interface (e.g. in the (stock or pixel) launcher or Chrome) drops to 5-10 FPS and after a few seconds all is normal again.
I have already tried to factory reset the devices to see if it fixed the app crashes.
Is this something that is normal on this device, or is there are certain setting that causes this? Is it maybe my specific device?

I do experience the same behavior, at random moments fps on ui drop for less than a second and then it's smooth again. It doesn't affect functionality or raw benchmark performance but it is very annoying. I do not know yet what is causing it.

Wouldn't that ruin the camera forever?

My guess is that this is happening due to the fact that this is the first non Google device to have Android O so the optimization is mediocre. At least it's not like the s8 lel

I must say that switching from the built in (Swiftkey) keyboard to Gboard made some difference. It stutters less now.
And yes, I'm probably spoiled coming from a Google device. Android 8.1 will probably make some difference too, as it is a lot smoother than 8.0.

Swiftkey itself doesn't stutter, but it somehow makes other things (occasionally) stutter.
You probably wouldn't notice it if you don't hyper actively mash on your device.

Very intresting, I also noticed the same thing about chrome, when I disabled it and started using brave the stuttering was way less. Perhaps using brave and Gboard would be a solution?

Yes, this can be another reason aswell.

It's probably not related to the spectre and meltdown patches, as other devices on the same patch level do not experience this problem.
The spectre and metldown patches take
It also doesn't happen in a specific app, and I know Chrome has some stuttering with some sites, but I am not talking about that.
Random apps seemed to freeze or lag for a few seconds and then everything goes back to normal.
I am thinking that it could be an issue with my specific device because Antutu benchmark also crashes for example and others seem to be able to run this benchmark.

my device has micro stutter here and there (as said , doesnt affect functionality) but not being able to run antutu bench seems to be a specific device problem. In addition i can confirm that raw performance was not affected by spectre patch since my device scored a pretty high score on antutu, on par with other sd835 flagships.

No reason to do that, using Xperia keyboard and gboard fixed the stuttering

I get the exact same thing it is crazy annoying. This runs most things perfectly, but will suddenly and for no reason just stop for about 5 seconds be completely unresponsive and then start running normally again. Was a fix or cause ever found?

Hey, after months I can confirm the cause for every stutter/lag/freeze on the device was caused due to swiftkey keyboard. I disabled it and started using Xperia keyboard and it's perfectly smooth.

Weird, never get any lag/freeze, and only use stock swiftkey. BTW how doy you get that score in AnTuTu? What firmware, are you rooted and/or use any tweak?

The bench was done a while ago so I don't remember exact firmware number, but it was android 8.0 stock not rooted and locked bootloader. Also for best possible antutu score be sure your device is cool before doing the test (28-30c), keep in mind that score also varies around 5-10k each time, lowest I got was 200k and highest was 210k in antutu v7.

I have been reading in the forms that this is an issue. I too am experiencing the heat issue, yet I don't see any fix. I read that the screen and/or the radios are the issue.

Mine gets a little hot at times too. I just pulled mine out of my pocket to show a friend and my screen was on and it was pretty warm, more than usual.
yeaa it gets really hot. i can't even play any hd games. the phone might over heat and crash
I had 14 hours of use today and over 4 hours screen on time. I think the higjest one got was 95 deg
I have the extended battery if that matters
Yeah, she gets a little warm. Anecdotal evidence says that the phones that get way hot (130-150 during games, 120 ish during regular use) have a hardware problem... I have read from a lot of people who have been that hot and say the trade-in was better.
Also, the extended seems to dissipate the heat better.
As for me, I didn't have much of an issue until after the first OTA. Now I top out around 125 when playing heavy games or surfing hard on 4G. Not happy about that, but I don't think it's hardware in my case. I need to get an extended anyway....
Its because of a CPU issue where the CPU runs at the highest clock speed instead of scaling like it should while the screen is on. I have this problem as well and my battery is absolute **** now :|

But I did have almost 5 hours screen on time :-\ didn't feel that hot. Really like having ics but that's getting pretty warm
i am using "easy battery" to help me keep my battery life and kinda keep it cooler. i recommend to return to stock os and wait until the official upgrades are given out.
When I first got this phone it actually ran hot, so hot that I can actually feel the heat on my leg when I put it in my pocket.
When I upgraded to the current leaked RUU, the heat problems went away.
I have zero heat issues on my Rezound, I still haven't gotten the new leak yet, waiting for a ROM that makes me really want to do it.

i thought u would not be able to get your phone back to stock after flashing the leak . and the official update requires ur phone to be stock. something like that

maybe the official update will fix the problem
You could run the RUU again and you would be back to bone stock, albeit a leaked "official" stock, but still stock. You would have the stock recovery and be locked again.

I don't think it's the CPU. Same cpu problems in the last couple of leaks and phone is running a little warmer on current leak. I think the radios are cranked up, pulling more power. My phone only gets hot when on 4G.

Left Side Screen Tear Common?

I'm not sure if this is common or if others have seen this on their prime. I wanted to put it out there to find out how common it is, and if they are resolutions for it, besides sending it in to ASUS which I can't do.

Yes, I get it occasionally. About once per month. It doesn't really bother me, and it goes away quickly.
I don't get it on mine (running stock 0.28).
Prior to 0.21 I had a similar problem where some tearing would occur on the left side of the screen when the recent apps list was open and closed, but that issue appeared to get fixed in the 0.21 update.
I've only seen it one time...
After rooting I loaded ATP Tweak and then followed the instructions here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1735887
And that's when the screen issue started happening. Change settings back to where I started and uninstalled ATP Tweak and it went away - and didn't come back.
Sometimes I have to wonder if all the "tweaks" aren't causing people a lot more problems than they solve?

Yes it used to happen with some youtube videos on stock .21 ... it's gone now
I guess it is video driver problem or sth like that ...
It happens for me when using cool reader
I've seen it once or twice with youtube, but it happens a fair amount with cool reader. Maybe it's just more noticeable, since it's a static screen. I don't see it on any games or other text based apps.
It's not bad enough to worry about, and it's always just a really quick flash. It is a bit annoying. It's the only thing I've found annoying about the prime so far - well, and the lack of a ssh client that I like....
I had those tearing issues. I mentioned it on xda already. I tried to understand when it was happening. From what I found it does not happen if I am not using the dock. It only happens when the dock battery is empty/almost empty.
Is it the same for everyone experiencing that issue ?
From what I found in my searches and first hand experience, it seems to happen with a live wallpaper that cares about the battery level (such as the ice cube and water ones from ASUS). I don't recall having the problem without a live wallpaper so far. Started happening only with the .28 update.
Does it happen to anyone without the dock ?
This is a common problem... sort of....
Seems to be much more apparent or widespread with .28 update...
Yes, and it happens sporadically with or without dock...
Also, your status bar & etc might tilt up and down as well...
Btw, this seems to be a problem with Tegra 3 devices in general (yes, even HTC One X... and even the new Nexus 7...)

Only when docked for me. it hasn't happened in a while though since the last update
This happens to me both docked and in regular tablet mode. Rebooting seems to clear it up for a while. I'm hoping this is solved in the next release as mine never did this on any of the older ones
Happens to me as well! I had it on every version... I'm glad that everybody else seems to have that problem!
good to know, thanks guys. I thought maybe it was my multi picture live wallpaper maybe causing it, but that seems ridiculous. Started happening outta nowhere so I was confused as to why!
Everyone has this happen once in a while, strange thing is when people say it went away after firmware update... not sure if they just have not seen it since? It is still there and you just have not seen it again yet.
Anyone who says that they have a prime that it never happened to- does not use their prime enough to catch the issue red-handed.
A reboot usually fixes it, has nothing to do with the dock. REALLY wish someone would fix it!! It looks pretty bad when your iPad lovin buddy picks it up and it is showing graphics glitches and crashing every game you start!!
I hate apple.... just want to smash his stupid iPad on his stupid iFace!!
Happened often when in was watching hd movies using play movies, I had it docked and it was full. Was really annoying. Rarely happened before the update, I also rooted though I haven't done much but add the tweaked build.prop. I'll test it undocked to see if that is an issue.
Edit: undocked not unlocked
I have got it atleast one a day regardless to using any Tweak or stock. It happened from .21 then so more frequently on .28. Especially when playing game any movie. Once it happens I need to restart the Prime to fix it. I think it may be related to ICS, some time it happen on my phone.

Exactly the same as me but I get it like twice a day, I'm a heavy user of my tablet.
The Tour de France app: Tour Tracker (by sbs) causes this tear quite consistently.
Figured I'd post this so the beta testers and Asus can troubleshoot with it.
I have a stock. Prime since Feb and saw this for the first time today. Rebooted and it went away. For now.

[Q] Insane Battery Drain (CM/AOKP/AOSP)

Maybe someone can tell me what I'm doing wrong. Using a stock rom, I'm losing maybe 10% an hour worth of batter with pretty consistent usage, but when I try CM, or an AOKP like RootBox or an AOSP like CarbonROM, I'm burning at least 3x that at over 30% an hour, with very minimal usage. Is this normal? It seems somewhat excessive, and unusable, to expect a little over 3 hours on a full charge. Is it due to the stock ROMs handling the 4 cores better? It's worth noting that I'm running ROMs with the included kernels for each, without changing any speed settings for the processor, and under stock, I'm using Eco Mode, which obviously will help some, but there's still a very, very big difference. If someone can point me at a solid ROM with a good kernel and good settings for battery life, I'd appreciate it. I'm not a very big fan of LG's stock experience, and changing the launcher and lockscreen only goes so far. lol

Even the sound quality (Incoming call and outgoing) is so low on AOSP based roms like CM etc. CM has always been like that on call quality since my Captivate days. I tried all the ROM's here and found out stock is better once u remove/freeze bloat. May be for others its been better i guess.
Chris, when you install the AOSP rom's are you restoring any system apps with TiBu? I'm experiencing (and I dare say many others are as well) really good battery life with RootBox. Some rogue app you are using is causing the drain because that is not normal behavior.
Maybe just install the ROM, gapps, and that's it for a few hours to see if it runs normally, then slowly start adding in your favorite apps. That way you might be able to determine what it's causing the problem. You should also install better battery stats or Dr. Power.

Yes, I am on the latest RB; however, I'm running the latest Houcha kernel. I might give the included a kernel another go on houstonn's next release. He told me last night he's doing some fine tuning on some things and hopes to have another release fairly soon...I don't know what "soon" is to every other person, so don't quote me on that. Personally, I'm not a fan of underclocking, and I tend to enjoy the additional cpu steps of Houcha over the included kernel.

Volume seems fine to me, but I use a Bluetooth headset. I don't like the volume on speakerphone, unless I'm in a quiet room. Also, if you use the Trickster Mod, it's got an option to increase volume in the settings, not sure if that requires that you have the faux sound version of a kernel or whatnot...

I'm on my second day on newest rootbox with included kernel. Running underclocked to 288 on the low end, smartmax governor. Unplugged this morning at 5:30 am. Hit 69% battery remaining when I picked my daughter up at 4:30 pm. Light use - 20 min screen on browsing, 15 min of phone calls, 40 min pandora on the ride home. One Google account syncing. FB and GNow active. Rest of the random background apps greenified. Wi-Fi and BT off.
It's definitely possible to get decent battery life on this ROM. As stated above, look for rogue apps. Better battery stats is my favorite app for doing this.

Thanks I'll run it for a couple days and give some feed back. So far its looking really promising...started off with about 80% battery before installing and managed to make it for close to 4 hours before going completely dead. Thats four hours of heavy use...web browsing, youtube, texting, flashing and editing apps. where im at my modem is working over time to keep signal plus massive machine interferance(long boring nights at the steel mill again lol) no tricks or tweaks either, auto sync, GPS, and WiFi (even thought not being used) were on.............its on lte too. Hahaha, okay. Kind of like a kernel panic on MacOS or a BSOD then. It drained the phone's battery though, so its charging before I put it through the paces today.

Extremely mediocre battery life?

Hey everyone,
The battery life on my S9+ seems extremely mediocre. After not even 2 hours of SOT I am left with less then 25% battery. Also, Google seems to be using the most battery.

Is this a recognizable and fixable problem or should I send it back?
Thanks for your help!
That could be due to not-so-optimized software.
My device is still stuck on the January update, so I'd guess that there will be an update soon.
Future updates might very well fix / improve the SoT, so it's basically down to: do you want to wait for updates or are you willing to use custom roms down the line?
If you answered "no" to both, then feel free to return it and get a different device.

You can pretty much be confident it'll be a software issue and nothing to do with hardware. There will be fixes and optimizations coming. Naturally the battery burns down a lot faster in the first few days.

I'm now on 2 percent after 2 hours and 10 minutes SOT. Surely this must be more than unoptimized software? My S8+ lasted way longer and software wise it seems the same.
For me it's decent, this is my first charge (s9+ duos)

That's not normal at all. Do you use the Google app regularly? Perhaps for voice searches or something like that?
I'ts not supposed to drain anywhere near that much.
The March security patch OTA was released for some countries today, check for an update, and after installing it, I'd recommend a factory reset and then start from scratch.

This seems way more in line with what it should be. I would be more then happy with 4-5 hours SOT.

I don’t use the Google App at all I think. I do have Google Assisant and “OK Google” on, but surely that cannot be the cause? I haven’t used it once today.
I’m letting it charge back to 100% after which I will see if there’s an update. If it’s the same thing tommorow, i should probably return it, right?

No, don't return it just yet. This isn't a hardware problem.
Check if there's an update for the Google app, if not, here is the latest stable APK for it:
https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/googl...le-app-7-22-24-21-arm64-android-apk-download/
Once you install this. Clear cache and data for the app, reboot your phone. Charge it fully to 100% and then go about your day and see if the battery life changes.
If it doesn't, give it one last shot by doing a factory reset (and/or updating to the March patch), and then observing battery drain.
If all that fails, then yeah sure, return it.
You have some weird thing going on
As you can see the battery is great it might be that its downloading all of your email attachments you should disable downloading email attachments via wifi on your gmail account. Reset phone and dont install it see how it goes first

I installed the latest Google app using the link you provided and cleared the cache and data. There weren't any software updates available yet, however.
I do have a suspicion. Normally I always set my phone up from scratch but this time I used Samsung Smart Switch to quickly move things over from my S8+. I've got a feeling that this may be the cause but I'm not sure. I'll see how it goes first before I reset my phone.

I completely disabled Gmail using package disabler since I use Nine for my mail anyway. I'll go another day like this and if it's still this bad, I'm going to reset and setup from scratch. I'll keep you guys posted.
Thanks for the help up until now!
Mine still going strong; January 1 security patch.
But this is with wifi and indoor use, LTE and day light will be another story... And almost no real standby today.

Betterbatterystats
It can take at least several charge/discharge cycles for the metrics related to discharge levels to home in an a reasonably accurate curve, and this also depends on your particular app usage pattern. For now, as the HGTTU says: "Don't Panic!"

bad battery life

i've countlessly reset my phone, even tried a custom rom (lineage) and still, my phone is draining and heating up like crazy. if anyone could help, i'd be grateful.

What variant do you have?
Since battery on the V30 series on stock firmware is excellent, it sounds like you have a rogue app. There's been a spate of apps that got into Google store which have ad malware running in the background. The draining and heating up like crazy sound exactly like what others who had installed those apps complained about. You need to investigate if you have any of those apps, and uninstall them. Look in battery app usage, see if any thing stands out.
Besides that, even for normal apps, you can also Greenify all which do not need background permission (which do not need to be running when you are not using them). When you click to use them, they will open, and when you close them they will go back into hibernation. I don't want my calculator app running in the background when I'm not using it. Obviously you would not use that on email, weather widgets, etc.
Last, you can always use LGUP Refurbish mode to rebuild your stock firmware. You will have to unlock bootloader and root again, but you'll have a new foundation again.
If you want to find out which app is draining your battery, there is only one app I'm aware of that can help you: Wakelock Detector Lite.
Download, follow the instructions.
sorry, i had added some screenshots from gsam but idk why they weren't posted as well.
so in the midtime i've tried another 2 custom roms, havoc os and dot os, and they were better with the battery, but not great, and had performance issues like stuttering while scrolling or lag in animations, so i decided to go back to stock hoping battery would be better. turns out it wasn't the case, i'm still getting something like 5h sot (which is quite bad for me), but at least it isn't heating up anymore, just a bit warm to the touch. it's draining in standby also, and system os and kernel (and also google play and services)
here are some screenshots:
https://ibb.co/4VGbKzd
https://ibb.co/gw5HXrN
i have to mention that i'm also rooted with magisk, but all i'm using is ainur sauron and jamesdsp (audio mods), and i can confirm that they are not the cause
will try using wakelock detector as well and post screenshots later, as i cannot at the moment
thanks for responding though, thought this tread would go by without anyone answering
edit: i've also reinstalled a lot of times using lg up refurbish, and it's still did the same. this time i did it with twrp
also, i'm on h930

Those audio mods are garbage. They disable the quad dac.
Now for the lag and battery drain that you experience. Did you flash rtcd and verify?

I don't know about you, but these mods do not disable the quad dac whatsoever. Actually, sauron activates high impendance mode, giving me flawless volume (my headphones are low imp but still aren't fully driven by the normal audio)
Anyways, i will try flashing rtcd and see what happens. Will post an answer afterwards.

It's not real HIM. Also it does disable the quad dac. Not going to debate it when the Dev even said it.
Need to flash rtcd due to the logs it creates while being rooted.

make it stock, make sure you don't install any mods or unusual apps then compare.
if you still got bad battery life or overheating, perhaps the faulty one is your phone itself

Why didn't he? It's clearly in the bootloader unlock and root Instructions.
Every time you flash stock KDZ you have to fully re-root. The only exception is when installing TWRP-flashable zip, which already has that removed.
(Just read where he says most recent time he used TWRP flashable zip.)

I think that rctd is quite obsolete for detecting magisk/systemless root. Rctd is on default state in my H932, it will report my device as official (via LGMENU), and no logs/traces that proof rctd is active behind the 'scenes' (via "ps | grep rctd" in terminal). I don't notice any difference with or without rctd enabled, and I believe, LG won't update its rctd algorithm anytime soon (perhaps you're already know why )

Actually, i did try RTCD Disabler, but it didn't make a difference whatsoever, it even told me, before flashing, that no activity was found. Also, the twrp zip that i had flashed had daemon removed. Maybe i'm not getting the right version or something? I got it from XDA Labs.
What i could say is that i flashed a older kdz, 21o, and it worked fine, but after updating to 22j it just ****ed up. Maybe that could be the cause? (i didn't install anything btw, just ran it full stock)
Also, sorry for being a noob, i'm kinda new here.

Im using Havoc OS earlier also have battery problem, but follow suggestion to install 4.4.169_orion_II_WIP3-perf-1555775897
resolve my battery problem, I also restricted background process for vance you tube since got notification that programme drain phone battery.
(Go to app info > battery > Background restriction)
Please refer my battery usage attached, I'm not set battery saver on my phone.
i finally did fix the issue, i don't know what it was but anyways, battery is very strong now, at least when i'm actively using the phone. it could get me to 8+ hours of use, but another problem now seems to be standby drain, which kills my battery way too quickly than it should. i usually lose 1-2% per hour, or even more, and it gets even worse when i'm in motion. like, let's say i'm outside right now, hanging out with some friends. i open up the phone for few secs, close it, open it again after 15 mins and i lose a percentage. i was even running naptime so i don't know what could be wrong.

yeah, you're right. maybe i'm just too nitpicky about the phone, it may have to do with the knock on as touch screen is always on and stuff like that, but i love that feature so i won't turn it off. anyways, it'd be cool to find a way to reduce the idle drain, as it's bigger than on most other phones.

Every phone I've owned, you can never rely on the reviewed standby time. I've had some junkers in the past (mostly time reduced by poorly made custom ROMs), but I'm on stock with this V30+. Best battery life I've ever had by far.

thanks for the tip. i disabled srtc with lg package disabler, but i don't quite understand the rtc no verity thingy. also, i think i found out what could be actually draining the battery in standby for good, and that has to be the sensors. i don't know how or why, but when i activated the mode which disables all motion sensors on the naptime app, my phone discharged really slowly in idle. however, i could not keep it like this because it was buggy and my phone would take 5 seconds to wake up, and touch didn't even work, only the power button. maybe if there was some way to stop the phone's sensors in idle, like the motion sensor or the accelerometer, or whatever is draining the battery.
