Signal drops - Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 Questions & Answers

Hello all,
I own mido since Christmas.
I am quite satisfied so far, but I am experiencing a weird issue.
I tried many ROMs (stable and nightly, nougat and oreo) from the XDA forums, but on every single of them my phone is losing network from time to time - which causes calls to be ended during calling.
I dropped my phone before I had a case on it, but I do not think that this would cause such a damage.
I bought the phone at geekbuying, is there any way I can tell it is a hardware problem or do I have to contact some technician and confirm with him?

[Q] I think my phone is defective!!! :(

hi, i bought my sgs2 a couple of weeks ago, and well at first i thought it was due to some bad data/energy configurations but i don't seem to find a way out of it, first of all my battery lasts 10 hours when i don't use it, maybe 5 when i use it (use the internet, make phone calls, text, chat, play some games and not much), second of all, my phone signal/reception to make phone calls or 3g just works for moments, i have tried several working sims but none seem to work so its definitely some antenna or phone issue, plus it gets hot for no reason, and when i play 3d games the screen gets really really hot, so hot that it burns, i already tried changin roms, kernells, configurations and everything, im really dissapointed with my phone, and i havent seen much people with these issues (besides the battery one) so i think my phone its factory damaged, what do you think? whats your recommendation? please help me, i really don't like to waste money and there goes $800
PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME!!!
Others reported battery performance similar to yours. It may have something to do with your cell signal. The SGS2 doesn't like certain carriers or particularly weak signals. That could be the cause of your 2/3G issues and your battery drain. If you post where you are and what carrier you're using maybe others can tell you their experiences.
Yeah sure, i live in El Salvador, my carrier is tigo, i bought my phone unlocked, maybe someone else has had similar issues related to 2/3g signal.
Try one of the stock(!) 2.3.4 based FWs, XXKG2 or XXKG3.
If things don't get better it might indeed be a HW fault, talk to the shop who sold it about it for replacement/fixage under warranty in that case.

Yes, OP - just make sure you reset the phone with "the jig" if you suspect the shop will be checking how many roms you flashed violating warranties.
and how do i do this, reset the phone with the jig? please instruct me
you can buy the jig from online sources. all you have to do is plug it in while its off

The great Lumia 920 conspiracy.......

Am I the only person that's noticed the cover up (or at best complete overlooking) of the 920 MANY issues?
Let me say, I own(d) a 920 and I loved it so much I looked past all its flaws, and I dealt with a lot. Previous owner factory reset it right in front of me and we know what that means. I spent the next 12 ****ing hours unbricking the thing just so I could use it! Now, after owning the 920 a freakin week, it stops reading my SIM card suddenly so now I'm back with android.
I just notice that no tech site has EVER run any articles about the litany of major issues with this phone. Hell even in the forums nobody seems to have put it together! Am I the only one who sees it??
Bricking on factory reset
Battery life issues
Black screen on calls
Hardware buttons randomly not working, requires soft reset
Phone suddenly stops reading SIM cards
I'm sure I'm missing some but those are the one I dealt with. Am I alone?

I've been using the 920 for 2.5 months now and I have none of your issues. I had the restart bug but it got fixed with portico update. also there is some dust under the FFC but i don't care because it is not on the lense and it don't use it anyway.
i know about black screen and factory reset bug but i read for the 1st time that there should be major problems with the SIM card or the hardware buttons.

My son has had the 920 since it came out...Other than *****ing about the lack of the most popular apps (instagram, temple run, Jetpack Joyride...etc) the phone has been nothing but flawless. He will never give it up because he is an xbox junkie lol
i've had it for almost 2 months now..
only issue i've had is the crashing (normally every couple of days), since updating seems ok so far...I've flashed a few 'roms' to it, EE branded and normal
I thought the screen going blank in calls was supposed to happen? Like to save power? last couple of phones i've had turn the screen off when you put it to your head?
I'll be honest, i'm a little disapointed in windows phone 8, after coming from 7 with no crashes for a year (apart from once when i started messing with the registry) I found windows phone 8 quite shocking, coming from android/windows mobile i'd say its not to bad, but in someways it seems a downgrade. But so far no crashes with the latest update, and i'm hoping it stays that way, but honestly, I have a feeling your issues are isolated.
Also had the chance to use the new nexus 4 the other day, if theres a cover up going on, i'd say its those who say android is smooth and responsive....
I've been using my 920 for a month and haven't encountered any of your problems. The only thing I don't like about my 920 is that there is no app so far to automatically switch phone profile according to time and location.
I'm shocked 2 of you have had no problems. Search Google for any of the problems I listed and you'll find loads of people with the same issues.
Id get another one but I can't afford to keep buying phones when one ****s up. And yea the screens supposed to go black when you put it to your head but it was going black and staying like that so I could end calls, use the num pad, use speaker phone, or any of that. I found a work around but the proximity sensor is supposed to work

Search google for ANY electronic device followed by the keyword 'issue / problem' and you are sure to get pages of results. People that don't have problems (most people) typically don't post about it while people with issues regularly post because they want the issue resolved. This gives an artificial bias to the negative and only reinforces the already tainted view of people in a mindset that something is rubbish.

I agree, since the last update I haven't had very many problems at all. And since I haven't been having issues I haven't been coming to the forums as much. I just come in every once in a while now to see if there's anything new. I'm not constantly hounding for an answer to my problems on a daily basis since I don't have problems. It's my guess that other people who have perfectly working phones would have like minds as me... or just not visit the forums at all.
No bricking during factory reset (had to do it once and I'm not going to do it again just to prove a point).
Battery life is awesome.
Hardware buttons are working fine.
Blank screen during calls isn't an issue for me since the proximity sensor works almost all the time, I think.... at least, it hasn't been a big enough concern for me that I actually notice it.... guess I should keep track of it.

This is also the main thing I'm missing, coming from Nokia N8 the situations was really a great app...
I think Nokia lumia phones in general have a lot of issues, as does Windows Phone. It's just there are so few users even if there was a problem, it would seem isolated. Microsoft's share in the smartphone market didn't even budge at all in 2012. WP users are not power users so they just run back to the store to get an exchange. Even the lumia 920 forum at wpcentral.com is slow as molasses. 90% of the posts are very shallow anyway. Most don't even know what screen size their phone is or what processor its running. the camera is just AMAZING and the phone is PERFECT, over and over again. Of course, this forum isn't any better. The only difference being the plethora of unlock threads, because xda is international.
Your description of WP users is fairly accurate & the market segment MS is going after. The enthusiast market is small & even on Android accounts for a very small % of sales. The easiest way to solve an issue is by exchanging the phone, if you have that option available to you. A lot of issues people are having are either caused by defective hardware or a bad flash IMO, which is an issue on any of the platforms.
Do people not expect bugs and hiccups at launch for these kinds of devices?
It happens. And it's not as bad as you perceive; it's not a conspiracy.
AW: The great Lumia 920 conspiracy.......
If ms allows developers create store accounts for free I bet there would be more apps on store.,.
I get what you guys are saying, but phone busting issues like that black screen on calls and bricking on hard resets shouldn't be common enough to have a thread full of people experiencing them.
If anyone knows of any way to get the phone to read SIM cards again, I'd like your help. I still miss using my lumia 920 :'(

I have experianced just about every issue in this thread. I have users of the 920 I support for other stuff and I see how they basically ignore them as they did on their Blackberry or iPhone. I had the brick issue... news flash as I posted in another thread, it is not bricked!!! use the Nokia Care Suite, gets you going no problem. During my day I may deal with just about every phone they see at an AT&T store (Tmobile, Sprint,or Verizon for that matter)... they all have issues. Have you ever seen an iPhone user change their password on their laptop and not update the iPhone? Lets say you need to get to something before updating that password, like they changed the server setting trying to update it... go ahead try it. Drop calls, Steve Jobs had to properly instruct dumb iPhone users how to hold an iPhone. Andriod, perfect????? WTF are serious?? And becuase of that piece of software, it does not matter what hardware you are talking about.
My phone is limited compared to Andriod, I can agree with that.... but I can do more with fewer Apps and I like that. The 920 has had some hiccups along the way, but the hardware I have right now is as solid as any other phone out there, actually physically a tougher phone then any other top tier phone.

This is exactly what I was trying to get at. These sorts of issues and threads are everywhere for many high profile smartphone launches, especially lately with this insane obsession with HW spec wars.
I've seen much worse, many times, you will not buy a high end smartphone at launch these days without having some sort of worry that there will be a game-breaking bug or defect.
WP 8 for 3 months:
NO ISSUES
POWER USER (i had portico when the first roms were available on navi)
my question is, are all these faulty devices on ATT or another crap american service , cause i think this may be your problem, ive had to work on vodaphone orange tmobile and ee 920's and 820's and i can say with pride that the only issue people have is the lack of popular apps., there is no conspiracy. why the eff are you people needing to hard reset anyway wtf are you doing to your phones?
I have to admit I've been having freezing issues regularly, often when it's just sat on my desk or in my pocket, and almost every night while on USB charge. I've also noticed on the odd occasion a reboot, but only because of my SIM being PIN locked.
Mine was a German Vodafone one, which I flashed on day 1 to the CV_GB ROM, then again to CV_GB Portico ROM. Maybe I'll try a different one, as I've heard the EE one has fewer issues.

Waiting for rma, random thought...

I'm currently waiting for my 6P rma to arrive, for battery shutdown issues, and a very small lift in the screen near Power/Volume buttons.
Since T-Mobile is going to start sending out an ota that will prevent Note 7s from charging, it got part of my mind wondering, are all the devices that are having battery shutdown/bootlooping problems (afaik, 6P, 5x, and some Pixels) using flash memory supplied by Samsung? How does a provider like T-Mobile target only Note 7s and not other phones that have Samsung parts? Is it purely based off of imei #s?

I've actually had the battery shutdown before Nougat. So there goes your theory. I will say that with Nougat, the problem definitely got worse and more frequent.

Just looking for any other commonalities among all affected devices (other than software). Afaik, the devices with these problems are 6Ps, 5x, and i guess now Pixels as well, from reading the reddit sub there. And i was mainly curious as to how a provider would target a certain phone model, by just using imei's or what.

Apparently the G5 has the issue as well.
Yeah, more than likely by targeting the iemi. I guess I read your op as you thinking them shutting done the note 7 possibly being a reason as to why this was happening. If that's the case then you having the issue before 7.0 totally debunks that.
I read huawei made a statement that the issue is software based. But I dunno, if that's the case, I have no idea why they would have offered you an RMA.
I've never had it happen to me, then again I don't think I've ever let this device get below 45% before I ran into a wall outlet, or a car

Haha no problem. Oh i didn't know it was happening with the g5. Yes, mines been happening since summer but infrequently. After Nougat, it's been happening more often. My rma was through Google not Huawei. I think in my case, it was because i had a veryyyyy small lift beginning to appear on edge of screen near the power/volume buttons, and i bought from the play store.
Well i wish it to never happen to your phone. Yeah i don't know who to believe, if it's software or hardware.

Well the update that is pushed out is a Samsung update(impossible to install on a Nexus), not a Nexus 6p update, so there is zero chance these could be related. I have two 6ps and no issues so far, knock on wood, one has Samsung storage and the other is Toshiba.
@Lawlrus hey buddy!
sorry somewhat off-topic, since you said that the random reboot is a Nougat issue, i thought maybe you'll know something about home button bugs i am having on Nougat based custom Roms.
it always happens randomly, or especially after i apply a theme with substratum (rom i use have full oms support) theme apply correctly, but the home button stops responding like when i tap it to return home it just wont do.
and it works again either after a couple of hours, or when i reboot the phone it works again normally. (and the bug will return if i uninstall theme and install another theme.) is this issue related to substratum you think ?

I had it on Marshmallow so it can't be a Nougat problem. The fact Google are RMAing them outside warranty also shows its not something they can fix with software.

I've noticed that as of late, and I don't understand what the issue is honestly. Normally after it happens, if I pull up recents and close all the windows, it works again
I'll have to start to take notice if its every ROM I'm on or if its isolated.
But yeah, its most certainly an issue with applying layers, as it just recently started happening and is the only time it happens. I do know that the substratum guys are making a ton of changes it seems as of late with the templates that themes are using, so its very possible that the next or a future sub update will fox the issues.

Ghosting effect seen on all dark screens

I sent my 5x to the factory for repair of 2 issues. They fixed one issue but not the other and sent it back to me.
Everything on home screen shows up as "ghosting" images on all dark screens (ie: notifications, quickstart and dialer screens). So I get ghosts of all the home screen icons, google search bar, and my screen saver. They are whitish but have a little color. They get stronger as the display is turned up. Huawei is claiming it isn't an issue, but that it's normal and even sent me photos of this ghosting effect on the 5x they keep at the call center for reference (same OS and build as mine). I admit it looks similar to mine. Two supervisors said they see it on their own phones: a Lumia 950 and an iPhone 7. It showed up on my phone about 2 weeks after I upgraded to Marshmallow and was not there before. I've never seen this on any other phone. So they are implying I need to live with it because it's "normal" for this model. Comments please? I think they should have sent me a new phone.
Please check your phones and see if you have this ghosting effect also. If you do it will be obvious, not subtle.

I had the same problem here running on EMUI 6.1.
after i played a game called BBTAN on my phone for a long time and i clicked it away to go to whatsapp or something, you could see the highscore of the game and some other stuff of it very vagely in the other app screens.
I thought it had to do with the heating up of the device and display after playing a game for like a long time... BUT...
I was allready planning to unlock my phone and upgrade to LineAgeOS (Cyanogenmod) 14.1 because i didnt like EMUI. SO, upgraded the software 2 weeks ago and never had the issue anymore ever since.... Very weird...
most probably the software issue, can be solved by either a factory reset or flashing any other custom rom

Thanks for the reply. It was in my spam folder so I didn't find it until now.
I've never heard of EMUI 6.1. Is it possible you mean Android 6.1? To my knowledge, EMUI only goes up to 4.1 When I upgraded my phone to Android 6.0.1 in November, I didn't have the issue at first. About 2 weeks later it appeared. It has not gotten any worse, but their "repair" did nothing to fix it at all. And they did not include a note with any explanation, nor did they include the note I was promised explaining what they did do to the phone.
I am not comfortable with rooting my phone (I don't want to lose the warranty and I don't know what I'm doing). I don't think it should be necessary to root a phone to fix an issue like this. The company should either be able to fix it or replace the phone. I refuse to accept their (most recent) explanation that it is "normal", as I've never seen it on another phone and the first 3 agents I discussed it with agreed that it was indeed an issue and offered to start an RMA for it.
Yesterday I called them again to complain about the situation. The agent said she was "escalating" (I always groan when agents say this because it ends up being meaningless) the case and that I would hear back from administration after they hear back from tech support---which could take up to 2 weeks, believe it or not. I can live with the glitch, but when I decide to sell the phone eventually I'm concerned it will potentially kill the sale or encourage someone to offer less than the phone is worth.

I have re-set it several times since encountering the issue with no success. I am not comfortable rooting the phone. I am trying to get a new RMA started, and in the meantime I'm hoping Nougat is released OTA soon and that it will help.
The reason for my original post was mainly to see how many other 5x owners have encountered the same issue. I want to know if this in an inherent problem with the phone, if the Marshmallow upgrade may have caused it (it didn't appear on my phone right away after upgrading to Marshmallow, but it did appear about 2 weeks afterwards).

Thanks for the reply. Supposedly they already did release Nougat a few months ago but there were issues with it and they halted it. They keep telling me they will be releasing it again. So who knows?
I already did send it in to them for repair of two issues, this one and another. They fixed the other issue and sent the phone back to me with no explanation. I'm trying to get another RMA started and this time I will right on top of them about this. Unfortunately they make it impossible to communicate directly with their service center and I was told the service center is very slow returning communications to the administration or CS.

I'm not confused. It's what 2 different CSRs told me.
But that isn't why I made this post, and it's off-topic. There is only one point: Do you own an Honor 5X, and if so, do you have the same ghosting problem on dark screens that I have? I would love to get some responses from 5x owners. I have tried uploading pictures of it onto here, but am not able to. But this is a very obvious thing on my phone so you wouldn't need pictures if it occurs on your phone. You would know.

Random reboots on x829

Hey
I got my x829 a week ago and was super excited for this awesome value phone...But from the very start it randomly rebooted with the stock EUI 5.8.016s (been told its US version)
I was very sad since Geekbuying offers no support, now i tried my luck with the "Small EUI 7.1" Custom rom as i hoped this would resolve my issue, to my disappointment it has not, and it still randomly restarts out of nowhere when just laying idle on the table.
Does anyone have a clue what could be the cause and how to fix it?
As mentioned it been there from the very first time i booted the phone, i havnt even at any point inserted a Sim card or SD card as its pretty much useless like it is now.
It gets luke warm to the touch but nothing major that i would think would cause this, also i installed Deadtrigger and played for 30 minutes with no issues...Seems only to reboot when in idle and locked.
Hope you guys have some ideas because right now i have a 200 dollar brick...
I now did a completely clean flash of Resurection Remix rom and the issue is still there, sometimes just turns off and you have to hold in power button for 10 seconds for it to boot up again, other times it simply reboots.
Once its boots and i use the phone it works just fine, i have yet to see it randomly reboot/power off when im playing a game or actively using it, but as soon as it sits idle it goes wrong.
Im thinking it might be doze mode related but not quite sure.
Noone else experiencing these issues?
Im slowly going insane, yesterday the phone trolled me and decided work fine for 8 hours straight (even laying idle on the table), only to start randomly rebooting again.....i used it for quite some time yesterday confirmed that it works perfectly fine under heavy loads.
But every time i stop using it, put it on a desk or in my pocket so that it goes into idle and the screen powers off, then after 2-10min it begins to reboot for no apparent reason.
Im out of idea's i tried some diffrent power profiles in the RR rom, it works fine under heavy load with no power connected so the battery should work perfect i have no clue what could be the issue....
If anyone have any ideas i would welcome them....
Can't you email the guys from Geekbuying and tell them about this problem that you're having? Seems like some serious issue that you're facing over there. Try to contact them and tell them what is wrong. In the beginning they will ask you to install a stock ROM.
I've had a similar problem with my phone, simply the fingerprint was not working upon receipt and my wife didn't know how to flash the ROM, so she had to wait for me to arrive home in order to check if the phone was working properly. After some email exchange, the guys from honorbuy.com were suggesting Stock ROM, buy I was lucky enough that the fp started to work after this. I am not sure that they would respect their 14-day return if I came home after more than 20 days from purchase.
At least you can try to contact them. It can be a motherboard issue but who knows...
Set your minimum Cpu frequency to a relative high value.
Do you have to unlock the phone by tipping the PIN of your SIM card after the random reboots? If so it could be a problem related to your SIM...
Normally if you inserts the SIM card while a Android device is powered on and running, the phone is going to reboot and you have to tipe the PIN. I know about many phones that are having problems with specific SIM cards. And our Le Max 2 is one of those. The most reported issues are totally killed cards for example. But random reboots are also a common problem. I don't want to go more into details, cause it's a stand alone story.
So you can check if the device will perform normal and without rebooting by using it without a inserted SIM card.
If you're not facing any problems then you can simply try another SIM ...
Here in Germany are hundreds of people who are getting frustrated because of this kind of problem. Older cards getting killed by newer phones (especially when the phone is a so called China phone). For example combination of xiaomi mi 5/5s and T-Mobile Germany seems to be a problem.
Indeed sim cards can reboot phones, if we're you I'd install another Rom , with full data wipe (very important). Remove sin card in the night and check if phone is ok in the morning, use 3c toolbox app to check error logs (root required)
Like unrafa said, remove Sim card over night and let the app do it's job.
I'm also using 3c toolbox for many years now. It's the best all in one app when it comes to failure and issue tracking!
?
Hey thanks for all the replies
I have never had a sim card inserted, i tried to put one in yesterday to see if it might solve the issue, but it didnt.
I booted into TWRP and waited for the screen to time out so it went into idle, there it behaves just fine when the screen is turned off, but i think TWRP doesnt force a "idle" state because i noticed the battery went from 80-5% with the screen off in about 9 hours.
I did think about the CPU freq myself but im thinking its about the minimum voltage maybe, setting the freq higher i cant see should fix anything, speaking from my experience with undervolting/overclocking computers im guessing the current minimum cpu freq isnt stable at the voltage its getting.
However i have never done any undervolting/overclocking on phones, how do i go about doing it in an easy way?
I will try install 3c toolbox and see if i get any useful info, should come pretty fast as it most of the time happens within 2-5 minutes of the phone being idle.
It is a known bug with the x829 variant aka the canceled US variant. I have experienced it with my prototype x829 since I got it for doing beta testing for LeEco. It happens less often on MIUI and AOSP/lineage based roms. X829 will never be officially launched all of its inventory was dumped on to Indian and Chinese sites.

that makes sense.. unfortunately I never knew this.. otherwise I wouldn't have ordered a x829.. my device is still on the way.. I'll sell or return it if I notice any of these issues..

Can you disclose any official document regarding this? My X829 is arriving tomorrow, I hope I'll be lucky not to have this problem, but if it happens I'd want a solid ground for refund claim.
Thanks!

Actually, it doesn't. From a hardware perspective, the X829 firmware pulled from one of those beta devices works fine on the other model name variants. I've run it for a while on my X820, and never experienced a random reboot.
It's also not beyond the realm of possibility that LeEco took a lead off base and had a metric ton of cnc'd aluminum shells and packaging made, printed with the X829 name and US applicable FCC information, and later scrapped the idea in favor of a new, US only model. And, rather than recycle the finished parts for the value of the base metal, slapped them together with possibly sub-par internals (i.e. finished circuit boards which proved during QC to not be 100% reliable) and dumped the result at very low prices into the Chinese re-seller market, where they happily flashed them with the older, leaked X829 firmware to make them attractive to frugal US buyers. Come to your own conclusions, but consider the lower price tag of the models sold as X829's, which are not supported by LeEco USA, and ask yourself how this model came to be.
Does anyone have any definitive knowledge of specific hardware differences between these models, or is it still in the realm of assumption and "urban legend"?
Well i sure hope thats not true, i installed 3C now and turned on the event monitoring, waiting for it to reboot again.
Speaking og this topic, check this screenshot, i found it bit weird my phone score that much lower than a real x820.
My device identifies as x820 on the left because og the RR rom.

Im guessing this big a difference isnt because of a poorly optimized rom.
My x829 that I got from Banggood on Monday hasn't rebooted on me once, the fp sensor works fine, and I've had no negative issues with it at all actually.
I'm just super confused about whether it's flashable or not, and what ROMs have a functioning camera!

Resurrection remix rom works perfectly fine except my little problem, but i had that with stock rom aswell.
Small update, after installing 3C and turning on the recording it has not rebooted, i wonder if the recording prevents it from 100% idle state thus solving the problem.
If anything its a good temporary solution and i guess proves its not hardware related :/
This is the longest its gone without reboot in idle (about 13 hours and counting), i will shut it down and insert a simcard + turn on recording and see what happens now.

Maybe, maybe not. Sounds like it could be a power management issue, which may well be hardware related. With the logger running, it may never try to go into deep sleep.
The performance numbers are pretty poor as well. I'd give a clean install of AOKP MM a shot and see what you get with that ROM. My X820 scores well above the recorded Antutu score for X820 with that one installed.
