Canadian Wind GR5w bootloop - Honor 5X Questions & Answers

Hello all. I have a GR5W phone, which I think is specific to wind (freedom) mobile in Canada. I have unlocked the bootloader and managed to install TWRP. But none of the ROMs meant for the 5X work on this phone (I've tried Lineage, CM 13, Slim). In my enthusiasm, I forgot to backup and now I don't have a stock ROM to go back to. Huawei doesn't have any stock firmware on their website. What are my options? I did try using the dload method to update to other firmware, but all result in boot loops. Please help!

Which model do you have? It would say that on the box -- do a search for the specific model (eg: KIW-L24, KII-L05, KII-L21, etc) firmware for your phone.

Thanks for your reply. This is a friend's phone. He threw the box out. All I know is the model number is H1621 and it is mentioned as GR5W in huawei's website. Its FCC id is QIS-KIW-A1. I'm going to try flashing a TWRP backup from another thread this weekend. Hopefully that would work.

So, that didn't work. I also found out the phone is called KIWI-A1 (gr5w h1621). Huawei has published the kernel code for this. I don't think this model is supported by any of the Huawei 5x roms. Can I request the lineage team to add this model?

Hi seedai_murukku,
Did you have any luck restoring any ROM to your KIW-A1?
I've found other KIW ROMs but they all result in the same boot loop that you described. Thanks.

Hey Guilo,
Still no luck. I tried to compile a custom boot.img from the source. Got stuck with a few warnings and gave up. I might try fixing and re-compiling soon.

My attempt at a ROM for the honor 5c, ported from the p9 lite b130 rom

Hi all,
Thought i share my work with porting a ROM from the p9 lite onto my honor 5c nem-ul10 chinese phone. This should work on all variants of the honor 5c models.
I have stripped out all the huawei apps and tried to make it a close to google stock apps that i use daily. It has adaway, busybox, Wi-Fi privacy police and viper4android installed and is rooted with superuser
As always, i take no responsibility if you brick your phone. Do a full backup of your phone before flashing.
I'd recommend doing a full wipe before installing.
Haven't figured yet how to make a flashable zip yet, but am sharing a TWRP backup of the ROM of my work.
Please say thanks if you like my work, feedback welcome.

Hey, it should work, if the SOC is the same as the 5c. I have been able to across flash any of the ROMs used on the Kirin 650 chip.
Just make sure you have a full twrp backup, i'd even go as far as testing the backup. Have you been able to get able to find the official ROM for your phone?

LineageOS updating with BaPatch

Hey!
I recently saw that a lot of updates were available for Lineage. However, last time I tried updating, I entered a bootloop that was acting exactly like the one of me trying to boot LineageOS when I used to be on over B442.
I was just wondering if anyones knows enough about all this VolTE stuff to help me.
Thanks !

Hi, have you look around all forums and post ?
Its written n times no volte on custom roms. You have to fallback to a compatible Fw stock version

no volte for custom roms ,,,,,
and also you will get bootloop if you flash a custom rom while you are on volte enabled firmware
so I should go back to a stock EMUI that was before VolTE and then intall Lineage ?
if so, how can I do that, knowing that I have the Chinese version (KIW-UL00) and stock firmwares are REALLY hard to find

Yes you need to go back to non volte firmware..
You need a rollback package to do that and stock firmware.

Thank you, but I'm not sure this can help.
As of what I found, I need to flash the update.app from an SD card.
However, I have read that this doesn't work if you have TWRP. Does flashing the separate boot.img, recovery.img,system.img and the other one that I don't remember will work?

[help] How can I upgrade kiw-l21c432b160 to android 6

I need to install Android 6, but I can't seem to find a firmware upgrade that matches my version exactly.
What version is safe to use? I'm completely new to the android world, so I'm completely lost…
The closest I've found is a file named "Honor 5X_Firmware_KIW-L21_Android 6.0.1_EMUI 4.0_C432B330CUSTC432D001_Denmark.zip" but according to the PDF included in it I should only be used with versions:
KIW-L21C432B130CUSTC432D005
KIW-L21C432B130CUSTC432D006
KIW-L21C432B140
KIW-L21C432B300CUSTC432D002
Mine is kiw-l21c432b160.
Is it safe to use this one? Do you have any idea where I might find a suitable .zip if not?
Thanks for the help

Did you try finding your firmware using firmware finder.?

Yes, now I'm starting to understand all these version numbers. My end goal is to install LineageOS, but I need MM first.
So now, I've switched back to Huawei eRecovery instead of TWRP, and tried two different firmwares (before B360 because apparently it prevents installing LineageOS), that were "validated with my IMEI". Settings>Update>Local>Reboot, installation starts I'm about to cry tears of joy and then around 15%, installation fails with no further details. I can then shutdown and reboot to my good ol' lollipop. Not sure what to do next...

I still have the same lollipop firmware my device was bought with. I don't think I have US variant. I brought it from (Amazon France)[https://www.amazon.fr/Honor-5X-Smar...d=1508409802&sr=8-2&keywords=huawei+honor+5x] and I am in France. The product title says it is unlocked but I had to do it myself.
I'll try your link as soon as I receive my SD card, because apparently it is required for this method. I still have this file from an older download, but was scared because a PDF file included in it mentioned it should be used with B140 and did not mention B160, but now that I've flashed a stock recovery meant for B140, this doesn't scare me anymore.
Thank you very much for taking the time to help a noob FOSS-enthusiast!

Honor 9 hard-bricked after downgrading using HURUpdater

I recently picked up a Chinese variant (STF-AL10) Honor 9 and wen through the process of unlocking the bootloader, rooting and re-branding to the European variant (STF-L09). All good. Was able to flash the latest ROM (STF-L09C432B378) using HURUpdater. All good except the 2 capacitive keys not working. Saw that there was a potential fix with an updated Kernel for build 366. So.... I tried flashing STF-L09C432B366 with HURUpdater. The flash appeared to be successful (no error messages except for the a couple that are expected apparently). But the phone was dead right after I tried rebooting from TWRP. Absolutely none of the reboot button combinations work.
Has anyone experienced this before? The seller is promising to fix or replace the phone so I've sent it back. But I'm still interested in finding out what went wrong. Are there any pitfalls when downgrading -- I only went from 378 to 366. My impression was that HURUpdater was fairly reliable. I'm wondering if the the B666 ROM was corrupted. I'm still surprised that I ended up with a hard-bricked phone.
Thanks.

Hello, for me happend quite the same thing, I tried to downgrade my original STF-L09 from b378 to b368 with HURUpdater and right after rebooting from TWRP, where I chose reboot to recovery, the phone died. Because it is in warranty I sent it to service last week. So I'm looking forward to what they'll say to me

What was the first firmware with gt Turbo? b377? Previously I successfully downgrade from b376 to b368.
btw your post is very useful!
Yeah, that explains a lot. What's been the best fix so far for the capacitive buttons problem? The one route I've seen is flashing the kernel file in fastboot mode from one of the patched builds (366, etc.) Any other ways that work?

My phone came back from service center after bricking it during downgrading from b378 to b368 with changed motherboard. So unlocking the bootloader via HCU client was needed. Unlocking succeeded, so now I'm going to flash new treble ROMs.

Unless your bootloader is unlocked you can do nothing. Else you can try with service center or funkyhuawei which is paid service.
