[APP][Beta]ButtonDots a workarround to a design flaw - ZTE Axon 7 Themes, Apps, and Mods

Hi, after using the axon7 for a long time i finally got annoyed eough by its odd placed non illuminated sensor buttons, that i decided to dust off my tasker skills and app factory and put together this little tool.
Please try to post bugs and feature requests to the z-union forum as i would like to keep conversation about it in one place if possible.
This should be usefull to the axon7/axon7mini as well as to other devices that suffer from invisible buttons in the dark.

What about a picture showing your mod/tweak?

Thanks, but I don't want to burn my screen.

Lol, then why do you have a status bar, you will burn your screen! Or why do so many phones have navigation bars, they will get the icons burnt there!
These are 3 tiny marks. You won't annihilate your screen.
Having said that, I made a test. I used rounded corners for about 8 months. Always with white UIs. After that I checked for burn in, very dark gray and no light - there was none, besides from the factory imperfections. This generation of screens is very good.

@FadeFx Could you make a Substratum theme version?
When I wanted rounded corners, I used Cornerfly and similar apps. All of them had this annoying problem where they would sometimes stop working or not start after a reboot. Now that Oreo is out, a lot of subs themes don't actually theme, but they do completely different stuff. like the always on one. I found a Substratum theme that adds rounded corners to the screen, and is customizable from the Subs app itself (it is "Curve"). And it has zero problems since it is based on OMS. I believe it would be a much better alternative to an app that needs to write over other apps (I don't know yet, but I guess I'll need to disable the dots to install an apk?)

Hi,
Same here, don't understand why they didn't illuminate the buttons. Using you app now!
Very impressive you could achieve this with only tasker. Wish I had such skills.
Thanks,

Not to disrespect or anything, but honestly i'm having a lot of trouble with it. The app adds a persistent notification by the system, and it crashes sometimes when i rotate the screen.
i hope the author makes a substratum version, overlays made with it seem not to have this kinda problems

Check back to z-union for an answer...
To anyone reading, my main dev thread is on z-union, so check there for updates and discussion, currently i am not on xda so often anymore, i just posted this thread for the xda people to know about it.

Thank's a lot ,very cool with the different colours.

Alright, I'm curious enough to swallow my pride and ask, because I can't figure it out: what is this, and what problem does it address?

The Axon's capacitive buttons are not illuminated. In low light sometimes you're not sure exactly where the three buttons are (tapping too far to the left or right sometimes). This app adds little indicators above those buttons.
The screenshot below gives an idea. Note that I'm using a HiShoot screenshot template where things are not lined up. In reality they are.
I used to use an app called Screen Overlay(s) to do something similar but the app here is much easier and better to deal with.

Oh, I see, thank you. Now this makes sense. Nice idea for a fix. I just wasn't understanding because I didn't realize this was even a problem. The buttons don't move so I've never had trouble remembering where I left them.

LOL. That was great. ?
For some folks, me too, the buttons seem a bit too close. For the back button I sometimes tap further left of where it is. Too used to on-screen navbar spacing I guess.

SwiftKey qHD problems

Hey all,
Searched the forums for this and found a bit of discussion, but not a fix.
I know some people are using swiftkey x and not having display problems, but for me it's borked, no matter what i do. I've tried clearing app data, removing and reinstalling etc - nothing seems to work. Settings pages occupy about 2/3 of the screen real estate, centered horizontally and stuck to the top of the screen vertically, and when the keyboard is in use, it takes up 80% of the screen but mostly with black empty space. For this latter reason, it's pretty much unusable.
My carrier is Orange UK, but my handset is a retail/SIM unlocked stock ROM. It is up to date with OTA updates.
Is there a fix for this? Or am i screwed?
Thanks all, and apologies if this question has already been answered - i did try in earnest to find it.
Sorry but need to ask... Where did you get it from?
I got mine from the Market and all is good and dandy.
Worth every penny I must add.

must agree, no problems at all........
I'm using the betas and havent seen such a problem, be it on stock, cm7 or customized blur roms. Maybe try spare parts and disable that legacy app fix.

No worries The market just like you. In fact i've been a SwiftKey customer for a long long time. My old SwiftKey licence seemed to transfer over to SwiftKey X when it was formally released. I did have the X beta, and at first it was fine, then after one particular update it started with this screen problem, and has been that way ever since, even after the official first release.

This sounds hopeful! I haven't heard of spare parts but im assuming its some sort of tweaking program? I can use it to disable some sort of legacy fix for older, none qHD apps? is that right?
EDIT: I installed spare parts but just have the following options on a settings-style screen:
battery history
battery information
usage stats
window anims
transition anims
fancy input anims
fancy rotation anim
end button behavior
haptic feedback
compatibility mode
wifi sleep policy
activity/process management
brightness mode
font size
show compass in maps
Only one which looks promising is compatibility mode?
EDIT2: Thanks a lot for that crnkoj - got it working! For all who're reading this thread and want to know: use spare parts to disable compatibility mode!
Sure, np. And ye, i meant compatibility fix just didn't remember the correct name.

Possible to dim the bottom three buttons?

I have the Galaxy Player 4.0. When using the device in the dark, I dim the screen to zero. But this does not affect the brightness of the three buttons at the bottom, which are very bright and annoying. Is there a way to turn the lights off for these buttons?

There was another thread that I found through Google it was named "android update on galaxy s wifi 4.0" or something of the sort. It was very long too, and it was where I first began my Android journey and also where I obtained the stock 2.3.6 rom that my rom is based upon.

Yup, I remember that one too! Ah, but enough reminiscing. On the subject of dimming things, I have been wanting to hack the screen so that it can go dimmer than the current 12% lock. I have been using screen filter, but it bugs me knowing how much battery I could be saving at night! If someone could point me in the right direction of what files to edit, or better yet, help me with this since I know nothing about coding, then I would greatly appreciate it. You could even add it to your rom, klin!

Not sure exactly what the process is to dim lower than that. I do know however that when I just installed CM7 the brightness goes substantially lower than the stock or any other ROM has. Might be a place to start looking?
And also as far as I'm aware, there's no way to dim the capacitive buttons. On or off, unfortunately.
Thanks for the tip, Ill look into it! I really wish I could install cm7 to test, but I need my device fully functional almost every day! Maybe Ill buy another galaxy player, lol!

Once it matures on the SGP a bit it should be a lot more useable!

The thing that may kill the DNA for me...

Its probably not what you think.
Battery is superb.
The screen, OMG its nice.
Phone is smooth as butter, despite heavy Sense.
Build quality is great.
However, so many games that I truly enjoy and have purchased do not work. The legacy menu button on so many apps eats screen real estate, and it is ridiculous.
I am aware that these aren't really the phone's fault entirely, but if the phone isn't a big seller, developers are going to drag their feet. That means we see fixes in months and in smartphone years, that's ancient.
So while I believe software will catch up, it will be later when 1080p becomes more mainstream. By that time, I am looking for another phone. So why do I want to suffer with incompatibilities?
Please don't tell me to sideload my stuff; I am getting incompatibility messages on launch as well.
As for the legacy menu, this is a two-fold problem.
1. Developers are lazy and not updating to Android standards like they should.
2. There is an abundance of false legacy menus.
The first issue needs to be fixed by app devs, period. The second one baffles me. I have a Galaxy Nexus. Not one of my apps has a legacy menu in it because if they did I wouldn't use it. Yet, my phone doesn't have a menu key either.
However, I am getting legacy menus, even in some games. What is worse, these menus don't work, or they replicate a clickable menu in the game. Why??? My Galaxy Nexus didn't have that issue. I can't even enjoy the screen to its full potential with legacy menus. I am aware I can mod this myself, but that isn't the point.
I know they are small nitpicks, but I think the screen in all its awesomeness might kill it for me as well with incompatibilities. I am not naive enough to believe that these will be cleared up any time soon.
The little black bar on the bottom doesn't bother me at all. I barely notice it. Just another one of those "opinions will vary" things.

The fact that this exists is kind of odd. When the One X(s) launched they had the same set up and it was even more annoying having less screen real estate to work with. HTC fixed it in the 4.0.3>4.0.4 update a couple of months ago. Basically, the recent apps capacitive button became a toggle. You were given three options:
1) As-is; launch recent apps
2) Long-press=recent apps, short-press=settings
3) Long-press=settings; short-press=recent apps
Check out the Teg3 One X dev forum. You should be able to find a solution you can port there.

Ironically, HTC removed that option for the DNA.
It finally pushed me overboard. The app compatibility, that is. I returned the DNA. I got tired of playing Russian roulette with app purchases and wondering if I was going to run into a problem.

VZW seems to enjoy butchering their devices from stock. There's a ton "enhancements" they made to the N2 that really don't make any sense. S-Planner is one of the coolest and most functional S-Pen enabled apps and they removed it and have Google Calendar set as the default. They also made the Wi-Fi notification toggle in to a Wi-Fi monitor so you have to go in to settings manually to turn Wi-Fi off and on. The N2 has a call and MMS blocking tool that they disabled also. Odd.
I agree about the menu button; it would have been better if it only took a small screen estate on either corners at the bottom instead.
As for compatibility issue, I have not yet came across that problem...well probably because I do not play any games. I'm sure many apps will start to optimize for the 1080p resolution, now that we have it on the phone.
I have been using Samsung Fascinate ever since it came out...even with the minimal level of developer support before it boomed with tons of roms, I had no problem using it for all of my essential needs. People usually assume that outdated devices are incapable of handling most tasks, but I think a single core is enough to cover a smartphone's functionalities. I bought the DNA because its spec somewhat overkills the current smartphone standards to the extent where it will be enough for another three or five years.
Technology will only continue to advance without ever having a "Peak", so I wouldn't stress over playing the waiting game for the next new thing to come out. Well, that's just me of course

Now that a 1080P phone has hit the market you can expect the spec wars to continue. The rumored SGS4 is supposed to have a 1080P display as well as an unannounced LG phone. People with the N10 are having the same issue. So it'll get resolved in time it's a matter of whether you're willing to wait.

The only issue is that those 1080p phones won't hit the mainstream market until April-May timeframe. This even further emphasizes the fact that DNA is the phone from the future... As an early adopter, I'm loving it!

Thank you for the kind words.
I really hope the device takes off. It has a ton of untapped potential.
I don't really game so I haven't come across any applications that don't work on this device. My two primary applications, however, are Facebook and Twitter...and the menu bar at the bottom is just a straight up pain in the ass. I don't understand why they couldn't either 1) add capacitive menu button or 2) do the menu buttons like the Galaxy S3/Note 2 etc. It just seems like an awful design decision to me, and I'm surprised more reviews didn't pick up on it.
It's things like this that lends to consumers thinking that Android lacks the 'polish' of iOS. I know it's not Android's fault by design, but the average consumer doesn't tend to care about AOSP vs. Sense, etc.
HTC completely changing sense on every update is baffling. They are so terrified of their market loss that it appears they have zero confidence.
And what happened to the button remap mod in 4.1? Gone.
I think this may be my last HTC phone if they don't get their **** together

Wow, this post was spot on! I'm an android newbie and DNA is my fist phone without the menu button. So all this time I'm seeing these 3 dots at the bottom taking up precious real estate and I JUST signed up in this forum so that I could ask what is it and how to remove it. I'm glad I found this thread cause I've about reached the point where I'm ready to return this phone back!!
Let me ask you this, do you think it will better? Also in the end I didn't get it, is it the apps fault or is it HTC sense that's at fault for not letting us have a choice. Also one final question, are there any other mods that allow you to change the setting, making the recent apps button act like a settings buttion?
and lastly THANK you for sharing my frustration! At least I know I'm not alone or crazy for being so annoyed that I'm losing at least .3 of an inch. What's the point of advertizing that it's a 5" phone then?!
this phone will get better with time .. it hasn't been out that long , nor has the unlock... The devs are starting to rip it apart , and then the fun starts

Oh I know. The menu thing was fixable. It was the app compatibility that made me decide.

Pros, Cons, solutions, workarounds and opinions

Me and some other guys kinda highjacked another thread so I decided to open a new one here for people to share their opinions, thought and general arguments and if there are easy solutions to the matters that the DNA makes you sad, I did look through the first 10 pages of this section and didn't find anything similar so people, bash away, and bear in mind that what you say will shape my (and others) opinion and whether I should or shouldn't buy this damn amazing piece of equipment
This seems like a good idea, and I can definitely see this helping a lot of people. I'm extremely happy with my DNA thus far; stellar battery life and performance, and the build quality is superb (especially the literal edge-to-edge glass that feels like it flows off the front of the screen). It's also quite resilient - I had it sitting in the passenger seat of my car, got into a pretty serious accident, and the phone doesn't have a single scratch on it. Obviously I got very lucky, but yeah..
On another note, my only gripe is that I can't seem to delete 3 of the stock bookmarks (Google, VZW Home Page, and Your Guide Mobile). I've tried clearing the app data, but that didn't help. I'm not rooted, but I'd think there should be some sort of workaround.. any tips would be appreciated

I don't think that without root you'll be able to delete them, not sure though and I'm not suggesting you should root cause apart from the warranty being void there's always a risk of bricking, small but is there... I guess for now you gotta live with it.
One thing that annoyed me about the DNA is that they chose to put Back, Menu, and Multitasking as the buttons. So you still have to have the 3-dot menu on screen. Luckily, if you root the device, you can change the multitasking button to Settings (which is exactly what I wanted), so I'm thrilled to have that. The bloatware remover is great as well.
If you aren't afraid to root it, there is awesome stuff out there for it. I won't be using a rom without Sense because I actually like Sense a lot. The lock screen and camera software are the best that I've seen.
The USB flap is annoying, but I will definitely be getting a wireless charger.

Ah, alright. I'm planning on rooting it eventually.. at some point.. but as you said, there's always that risk lol. Plus, beyond that small issue with the 3 bookmarks, everything else about the phone is perfect even without root, so I can live with it Thanks for your input though!

I don't know if you can do it with the apps you mentioned, but you can disable a lot of apps through settings without root.

Yeah, I've disabled a good amount of apps through settings, but I was talking about the preset bookmarks that show up in my browser and in my bookmark widget.. it let me delete the other 7 or so, but these 3 refuse to be deleted

One thing that annoyed me about the DNA is that they chose to put Back, Menu, and Multitasking as the buttons. So you still have to have the 3-dot menu on screen.

on the one X you could change it through settings where you choose what the multitasking button does, if I remember correct when you put the button to show the settings menu in single touch and multitask on long press it dissappears, not sure if it works on the dna but give it a try and report back

I see what you mean. I just tried it myself and couldn't delete those 3 bookmarks either. Guess root is needed to delete them. Unfortunately, currently you cannot write to the system while booted in android on the DNA. You would have to do it through recovery somehow.

Why not try opera or chrome for browser as a default? I personally prefer opera mobile but try a few first, like maxton and skyfire

That's a good idea too. I almost never use the stock browser anyway. Boat browser has been pretty good to me as well although any of these would work. What I like about 3rd party browsers probably the most (aside from features) is the fact that I can exit the browser. With the stock one it will just keep running even if you back out of it.

true, whenever I flash a new rom and reinstall opera I always activate the exit button on options.
phones been surprisingly awsome on stock.
I rooted the phone so i could run wifi tether. No issues with disconnects and I can actually tether my phone and not have to plug it in for 6-8 hours.
Love the screen, not just how good it looks but the waterfall effect the glass has feels amazing to me. Overall, very pleased with my purchase.
the european version was just announced so I think I'm gonna be going for that cause it states a sd card slot in contrast to the dna,
all the other specs remain the same
so I guess I'll be attending another forum soon, hope you find help on this thread and pm me if I can help with anything

My biggest gripe (besides the 3 dot menu button) is the damn messaging app. Every single time I go into it, it 'refreshes.' So many times the app takes a few seconds to load and it shows everyone's phone numbers instead of the names. I just don't understand why.
I'm hesitant to switch to another messaging app because 1) I think they're ugly/love the look of the Sense app and 2) I love how I can see a new message on the Sense lock screen and swipe directly into it.

It sounds kinda weird, how many contacts and messages do you have? if it's not thousands I guess there might be something wrong
try another messaging app to see if it's persistant or just the sense messaging
I don't have that many contacts, and I definitely don't have that many messages. I limit it to 200 per thread (only a few people reach this), and I even go through and delete it down to like 10 threads that are the most important. Regardless, this shouldn't happen on a phone with 2GB of RAM. Frustrates me to no end.
I posted a thread about this in this section maybe a week or two ago, and a few users chimed in saying they were seeing similar behavior. I don't think it's just me.
Mine does the refresh on sms too. Its like 1 second though so not a big deal.
Had the phone for a week. Battery life has been excellent. This is the first time in 2 years I havent had to charge my phone at work at all. Consistently get well over 4 hours screen on time. Although I've noticed using non-sense launcher its not quite as good but still excellent.
The screen is amazing and even at 5 inches it fits comfortably in the hand. Even pushing this many pixels I have yet to notice anything id call lag.
The 3-dot menu can be annoying if you notice it. Hoping for an update somewhere to deal with that at some point. I've also had issues with Netflix not loading properly but I blame the app. Also, I've noticed when I change lockscreen style, like to productivity or something it doesn't work too smoothly. Not being able to change wallpaper on a screen longpress kinda baffles me as well.
The phone definitely has some quirks and some areas where HTC could have made the operation of things more efficient instead of adding unnecessary steps. But I would definitely recommend this phone to anyone it is really a pleasure to use.
Btw, being left handed, am I the only one that wishes the back button was on the right instead of the left?

Nah, for some reason, they took that out of the DNA. Can't change it in the stock options.

Lacking a ton of microsoft launcher features???? Or????

Is it me or can i do MORE with Microsoft launcher on my Note 9 than i can with this device?
I cannot find any launcher settings/features. I have dev mode on as well....and i got nothing.....
Is it me or am i missing something?
It appears as if this is using a modified version of Launcher for foldable phones, which does appear to lack a lot of customization features from the traditional Launcher.

i'm sure someone will figure something out because this is kinda a bummer....those bars on the bottom are BRUTAL.....
This launcher needs help ASAP! The icons alone are brutal and there is zero customization to the launcher. I really like the Pixel launcher which has some but not a ton of customization and the normal M/S launcher is decent, I would be happy with that level but here is nothing currently going on here.

How about some simple stuff like double tap to wake the screen since there isn't an AOD?
And why is the notification shade so narrow in comparison to the screen width??
I personally hate the pull down anywhere on the homescreen to search feature, I want to turn it off.

Oh nice. yeah still limited. thinking its cause the OS cannot handle the extra features right now...most reviewers said the device wasn't even usebale prior to this day 1 patch....they got on the 5th...so id imagine.... we got a ways out or until someone brilliant creates a fork.

I'm playing games and i see device actually running any game on super high settings exactly the same as Snap865!
So the kernel in very good shape.
I just don't understand where this micro lags coming from.... launcher!!!?? Rom? or maybe it is a kernel.
I'm happy that Microsoft didn't lock the bootloader.... so we have access to open a hood.
Don't know if I will be able to wait so long.

I think its the launcher. I installed lawnchair and it seemed overall snappier. Went back to microsoft launcher though because other launchers act wonky when switching between postures.

Yeah I get what you mean I been back n forth between this and the fold2
Supposedly an update per month on the duo is what was said.... Let's see how well that pans out.
The studders are really odd.
What would you move to from this?

I came from Sony Xperia 1 Mark II (latest flagship)
Yeah It was Note20Ultra or Fold2 but im gonna hold out and see what the deal is with a new launcher setup for this thing hopefully sooner than later.
I fear that Microsoft held onto all the cards and didnt let 3rd parties in on the goods to develop ahead as they want everything to be theirs on the front end for a long as possible....issue is....its not holding water and i think they gotta act fast.... Lets see what aftermarket comes up with now.

Except that goes against what Microsoft actually did, releasing the API's and an emulator image for the duo a few months ago.
Right now, Android 10 is kind of hacked together to handle a lot of the dual screen features, but android 11 has those API's built in, so hopefully 11 will help out with a lot of the bugs we are seeing.
so when i try to install Nova, it runs as a layer on top of stock MS launcher.. like i can see both lauchers with their icons..really weird!
At this point unless a launcher developer goes to the trouble to make their product compatible with the Duo it will be M/S or nothing. I'm hoping their next software drop will help a number of the the launcher issues.

Both launchers leave "remnants" of themselves when you switch defaults. The way I got around it was to force-stop the Microsoft Launcher and make sure Nova Launcher was the default. This actually works pretty well. The problem is that Nova Launcher isn't optimized for this environment, and things get weird. So back to Microsoft Launcher I went.
Saw the post about lawnchair. And doing adb to disable... May try that
