Nexus 6 - right time for replacement? - Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 Questions & Answers

Hello. I own Nexus 6 for 2-3 years, running purenexus rom and overall I must say I generally like this phone. But also I've tried Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 and I was surprised how fine MIUI run and despite the fact I'm a fan of pure android how nice it looks and works. Maybe I am little bit bored of using the same phone for longer term and I would like to do some change.
I know my case is more about personal preferences, so I dont want to be convincing to different brand for example, my question is just technical.
If I replace my nexus 6 to redmi note 4, will I gain something? For example better camera, speed, performance, capabilities? Won't this be step back or staying on the approximately same level? High end older model for mid class newer one? Is it the right time to upgrade or better wait little bit longer for something better and stay with N6 for even longer time? What do you think about it?
BTW: mostly Im interrested in camera, if image quality of redmi 4 will be better or not... This is probably the most crucial point for me.
Thank you.

I'm thinking this belongs in the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 area.

It is pretty obvious the camera will not be up to your expectations, I'd recommend the Redmi Note 5 Pro, if you're specifically looking for a better camera.

No, the Redmi Note 4 camera has nothing to be desired.
The phone itself is fine, though. Gets me through the day without charging, okay performance.
If you're looking to upgrade your phone for the camera I'd suggest to get the new Redmi Note 5 Pro or Galaxy S7 which price has been dropped significantly.

Obviously you are bored, nexus 6 is superior in every way even with that old arm CPU. Don't even think about Redmi Note 4 .

and what about redmi 5 plus? camera seems to be better

As a Nexus guy(myself), forget about Chinese phones. You will be greatly disappointed.
This is by far the worst phone I've got. This could be subjective opinion but I feel i need to warn you.
Ultimately, it's up to you.

[Q] Which phone? N5 or Note3

Hey all,
I've been using a lumia 1020 for the last month or so. However being a long term Android user I'm really starting to think this was a bad choice.
Now ive been thinking about what to get next, but Android.
I've been looking at the recent Lg Nexus 5 and the Note 3.
Past phones I've had are.
Galaxy nexus
Xperia Z
Note 2
S4
Ive been mulling over the idea or the two phones above and i really dont know which one would suit me better.
I have been thinking about running a blog for something to-do as in the winter months are pretty boring where i am, I'm also into photography, the rest of the time i use the phone primarily for internet use, rather than a phone.
The nexus is raw android and i prefer that to touchwiz purely based on looks, not functionality, as this always something that bothered me on Samsung phones, obviously speed is affected too.
I like the camera and screen on the note 3, as the camera was good on my S4, and the extra screen space makes sense for internet use, however the N5 isn't exactly a small screen and i can tether my tablet.
But the battery life is a serious question as while the Nokia is windows phone it lasts 3 days, i need a lot of screen time and plenty of standby too.
One of the biggest things is price in the uk a N5 is £349 while the Note 3 is £530 (I've used 32gb models here)
So what you pick? Or what should i pick, if you need to know more about my usage to answer this please do ask.
Thanks to everyone who helps.

nexus 5 will have LTS,if you plan to use the Phone for more than 1 or 2 years i suggest N5. or else note
Personally I would (and am going to) go for the N5. Not a fan of phones with a screen over 5" or Samsung phones, so for me it's a no-brainer.

Budgets not a problem, but it's worth mentioning as it depends on whether the features are worth the extra.
I will probably keep the Phone for 1/ 2 years, as I change when something new comes out.
Well i'm not interested in the Sony, as the Z wasn't a very good phone and broke, physically twice.

Yeah see this is why i'm so torn,
The Samsung is a excellent phone, however Touchwiz was designed by Stevie Wonder in regards to the colours, but the actual phone underneath that is a powerhouse with some nice functions and a huge screen with excellent battery life, While the Nexus 5 is the raw experience I love but i'm concerned about the quality of the handset and battery life.
As long as the camera is capable of shots like the Note 3 i'm cool with that, the GF will probably still have the Lumia 1020 should I need something exceptional.

24 hour opinion

I just received the matte gold nexus 6p and all I can say is wow!
Everything about this phone is premium and dam its pretty. Coming from someone who also owns a nexus 5x and a nexus 6 I can tell you that this appears to be the perfect device. After using the nexus 6 for a while, I loved it. I also felt the same about the 5x but there was something missing. I wanted the big screen back and all new hardware features from the new set of devices. (Plus the nexus 5x was laggy, and the nexus 6 was just slightly dated at this point).
So far I haven't been able to knock anything about this device. The only thing I guess I could say is that it's so thin and slick you always feel like you are going to drop it. This is the closest to iPhone quality standards that I've seen in a phone. Once you get it in your hands you will see it far exceeds anything currently out there running Android.
I'm not sure where all the hate has been coming from but this thing is a beautiful beast of a phone so far.
Congrats! Totally agree with you. I love my 6P. To be honest I think it is in its own league. Beautiful, sturdy and top notch quality.

I must say the note 5 doesn't hold a candle quality wise. If you are considering it and have the extra funds you won't be disappointed.

I was unsure about upgrading from the nexus 6 too, but the new features are so worth it. It's worth taking the chance I would just go for it. You won't be disappointed.

The only thing that is keeping me away at this point is the camera on the 6p... or I should say camera software. I will miss the s-pen though... But other then that.. all the reviews I have read and watched seem damn good.
I had a nexus 6 before this 6p and I loved my nexus 6, the slightly narrower design is the main deal breaker for me it's only a few mm but I always found the original nexus 6 just to wide, this 6p is perfect, I also in work have a note edge, it's not a patch on this phone imo.

I was always a note person as long as I can remember but once you take a look at it the software isnt that great. Plus this is the best camera on a phone I've seen.
The notes camera is better for sure but the 6p's is no slouch.
It's funny how the brain works once you spend a lot of money on something. I owned the Note 5 for a good while and the 6P for a little over a month. I now own neither phone.
Now as an outside observer with no money attached to either device, I can with 100% confidence assure everyone that the Note 5 has a better camera than the 6P.
People who say otherwise are lying to themselves unfortunately. I hate to sound harsh but that's the truth of the matter.
With that being said, the 6P has a very good camera. It's just not up to Note 5 levels overall.

I don't think anyone was speaking on the camera. To me, as far as build quality goes and software the 6p exceeds the note 5.

Other people brought up the camera, I wasn't replying specifically to you. Considering both of my 6P's bent, I wouldn't say the build quality is better. And software is a tough one. If you measure software by added features then the Note 5 kills the 6P. If you measure it by a stock experience then the 6P kills the Note.
Yes I had the s6 with all the features I mean gimmicks, but touchwiz is total crap. Yes the camera might be better on the note but it doesn't hold a candle to the N6 software wise and the development for nexus devices. Go get a point and shoot if you desperately need amazing photos. This is the best android phone on the market.

Yeah no offence to Samsung but touchwiz makes me want to rip my hair out. My mother has a s6 edge+ and I absolutely cannot stand the ui on it and neither can she. Very bloated and fairly hard to navigate, not to mention the lag. But IMHO it really depends what your looking for in a device whether you'll love the n6p over your current phone. Do you love nexus devices? Want latest android on a slick phone that will last? Treat your flagship very delicate because it is aluminum and electronics? Love customization or roms? The n6p is probably for you. Are you a professional photographer who uses their phone for that? Want a stylus? Don't baby your phone? Like stock "features" and "useful" apps? Probably not for you.

AS a network engineer I use smartphone for a variety of tools, my average SOT 6+. I get these phones thru work but I choose what they buy. From the S3, S4 to Note 3, Note 4 and Note 5. I always root. I was able to to have them swallow a Note 4 DE so I could have the unlocked bootloader on VZ network. During the new buying season they went with the Note 5 but I stayed with the Note 4, reason why, there will be no developer edition of it. So 6 days a go I got tired of Samsung lack of update on their phone especially the Note 4 so I decided to grab a 6P. This is not my phone Nexus phone, I had all them until the 6. Once the 6P came in I was already ready to flash what I wanted on it. I've went 6 days on the phone almost straight, lost sleep hours etc lol.
Can you say addicted to a phone? I couldn't believe I waited so long to get it. The Note 4 will be last Samsung phone, from now on I'll stay with nexus.

Phone for 2 years

Hey guys , i am about to buy a new phone and my options are: Nexus 5X, HTC M8 and Redmi Note 3 PRO.
I want to know which one has the : 1.better cpu/gpu for games
2.battery life and HEALTH over time because i want to stick with it at least 2 years.
3.which one is more future proof
I know the nexus 5x has the best support for CM which i like but the battery life is a very big downside.
And i want to know if its true that: if there is COLD WEATHER (-5/-10 degrees) outside the battery drains almost VERY fast ? FOR REDMI NOTE 3 PRO (i red this problems on a forum)
Hope you can guys help me sort it out.
Redmi Note 3 pro is definetly the best bang for buck, for performance and updates I'd go for 5X but that's much expensive than this device, I won't touch HTC.
In short, if you want a good phone for a decent price, go for Note 3 Pro, but if you want more performance then go for 5X, but in my opinion, kenzo has everything I need, good speed, fp sensor, and regular updates thanks to devs!

What? SD650 performs better than 808 in both CPU and GPU, not even mentioning temperatures difference, battery and no throttling in SD650. It's not reddit, so let's just stop falsely praise Nexus devices, while in terms of performance they are below Xiaomi models. Hell, on Kenzo you can easily get twice as much SOT as in Nexus 5X, it's like not even competition at this point. I switched from 5X to Redmi Note 3 Pro and I'd say it was big upgrade, kenzo is just better in almost every term.
To OP, in all 3 of these points kenzo destroys rivals, you'd get a bit worse camera but that's probably only downside of this device, if you don't really use it that often then there is just no reason to not buy RN3Pro, and about that problem, I'm often using it outside and where I live, right now there is like -7 to -12 degrees and I haven't seen any drain, battery drops normally just like when I'm home.

So 3 more questions: I DONT CARE ABOUT CAMERA FIRST.
1. For gaming which one is the better one from these 2?
2. If i live in a cold country the fast draining battery when its -5 -10 Degrees is a deal breaker?
3.I heard something about xiaomi note 4x with 653 is real or its the normal xiaomi note 4 snapdragon ?
Man...its around -20 celsius where I live everyday right now for over a month and kenzo works flawless... iPhones are dying because of that non stop...first time I hear it for kenzo...
As for performance...its amazing, no lagg, even Vulkan support, simply the best for this value, better from 5x in every segment...
Redmi note 4 came new with SD625 which is less powerful, but supposedly even more battery friendly...but I get around 8-10h SoT most of the time so it doesnt really matter, compared to 5x, like 3h

1. Between Redmi Note 3 Pro and Nexus 5X? Xiaomi, it has slightly better CPU and GPU but the real deal breaker is throttling and temperatures. On SD808 after some time it will get hot and CPU will start throttling, especially while playing for some time, on SD650 there is no such thing, phone might get a bit warmer, but you probably won't even feel it. Plus battery will drain a lot slower on 650.
2. I don't know about Nexus while it's cold because I got rid of mine before it's first winter, but Redmi Note 3 Pro doesn't really care about temperature outside. It works as good wherever it is.
3. Honestly I have no idea. I've heard about it too but after relase of Redmi Note 4 (Snapdragon) I'm not even sure if it's still gonna be relased. Guess we have to wait.

3. Honestly I have no idea. I've heard about it too but after relase of Redmi Note 4 (Snapdragon) I'm not even sure if it's still gonna be relased. Guess we have to wait.

In battery life probably none, about gaming I can't tell, but I don't think that there is that much of price difference to save a little money, 3 gb would be overall better for future, but if I had to buy 2 gb version I'd probably switch instantly to some AOSP custom rom because MIUI used to eat 1,2-1,5gb ram on my 3 gb model so it would probably be a little left for gaming, and on custom roms it's mostly less than 1 gb usage for system. But by buying 3 GB u also get more storage which would probably be nice to have more games instead of wasting money for bigger SD card or something, so think about that too

For unlock bootloader you have to write for a permission, it takes 1-3 days for them to respond and after unlocking it's just pretty much same as in other devices, no problems at all.
About stability, there are tons of stable MM roms and quite a lot of Nougat ones. The only bugs are from what I know flashlight working sometimes after 2nd tap or 3rd and not as good fingerprint reading if you get the goodix model, but it's still not bad, and it's probably gonna be fixed soon. Except these ROMs are stable and have pretty much same battery life as MIUI (because it's very good in terms of battery) and, I'd say, smoother than stock. Benchmark-wise custom ROMs get like 10-20k more in Antutu, plus some of ROMs add Vulkan libs so if you change build.prop you can download and play Vulkan games, they perform really well!

No, it's free. You just have to ask for permission in MIUI site and wait for permission rights on your account, then you simply download one program from MIUI, connect device and click unlock button, it will do it automatically. But I heard that some people are having problem with that and have to first flash MIUI gloval dev via EDL to make program work, for me I didn't have to do anything, unlocked it on version that came with me from shop.

Battery is certainly very good on redmi note 3 pro and u can install android nougat also. Lineage OS, slim roms, rr are all well supported here. Its really like the best of two world a good os good performance massive battery! Dont think mich go for the redmi note 3 pro. But have no idea about quick nattery drain in chilled areas.
Go for Redmi Note 3 Kenzo.

Yes, Redmi Note 4 isn't as powerful as RN3Pro. Though you would get better battery life with SD625, but it would be better choice if battery was more important for you than raw power, but I'd say kenzo has big enough battery so there is pretty much no reason to buy even longer lasting phone while in my case I'm charging phone like once for 3 days with ~3h SOT usage per day.
I just bought the Redmi Note 3 Pro Special Edition and I love it. It's taking forever to unlock because of Xiaomi servers not being updated timely but I love the phone. It's fast, Battery is amazing, 4K video and HD Slow motion are killer.

And is the construction or display better on REDMI NOTE 4? I heard its 2.5d its there a difference ?
we got fully stable cm14.1 with volte, awesome battery backup, dual sim, IR blaster, very good display. and all at very low price. nexus is very costly man. i think three times the price of kenzo.

Overall love

Yes, yes, it's possible to love a phone. Heck, you sleep next to it, don't you? Rate this thread to indicate your love for the Xiaomi Mi Max 2, all things considered. A higher rating indicates that the Xiaomi Mi Max 2 is an incredible phone that you enjoy tremendously. You love it.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
According to me, it is one of the best phones in this price range. Overall performance is very much satisfactory
My Mi Max 2 arrived two days ago, i'm really really happy, battery lasts two days with strong use, and everything is smooth. It was not so easy to go through the unlock procedure but now i'm done.
Me to, very happy so far. Coming from Samsung Note4, and that seems to be the end of Samsung phones for me!

How does it compare to your old note 4? I have a note 2 that is just about completely dead and hope for a sizeable jump - my only real worry is camera quality.

Me too, i want to know as my note 4 is failing and would like to upgrade
I've a Note 3 running Resurrection rom. Just got this last Friday and love the bigger screen, I remember getting the note 1 and nobody could believe the size, and now the note 3 is just about average, lol. Anyways I'll be missing the stylus and removable battery, but other than that it seems good. Just waiting for the 72 hrs to pass so that I can root and unlock the thing. For less than half the price of a Note 8 and the same price here as a second-hand several year old note 4 I don't think you can do wrong.

Buddy, How is the screen quality conpared to the note 3?
It's amoled vs lcd / 380dpi vs 344dpi. Im really considering this one or the LG V20?
Is it too big for pockets?
Screen seems ok to me, it's not as vivid but wil do the job browsing and reading pdfs which is my main use. I've thousands of photos too and they seem ok. Sizewise it's longer and sticks out a little bit from my pockets but not enough to bother me.
I am in love with this device, But bit disappointing with MIUI which uses more ram. Waiting for stable custom rom.:fingers-crossed:
I have a Redmi Note 3. I'm looking for a larger phone. My mom wants to take my Redmi once I get a new phone.
My only concern with this phone is custom ROM support as I don't like using MIUI. Are the chances this will be supported by LineageOS officialy sometime soon? (Mi Max 1 seems to have great custom ROM support). If yes, I'll be buying this phone right away.
Also, I'm confused. Some pages mention this phone has NFC and some don't. Does it have NFC. Doesn't affect my descision to buy this phone but still.

Yes, only thing I'm missing is the picture quality from Samsung, even though it was very much slower to focus, noticed specially when scanning bar codes. In very dark envioment it can be seen that it has ips screen and not amoled. But it cost 1/5 of a new Samsung Note, so i don't care. Specially since my Note4 failed with the "mmc_failed" error after 2 years, and Samsung wont emit it's a production failure.
Camera Quality

10 -- except for the battery ...
I got the phone cheap $229 4/64 (it was 199 yesterday at Gearbest). TOTAL LOVE. Perfect build quality. Fast. Gets a great signal on AT&T (the only signal in my neighborhood). Better than my Samsung despite AT&T's claims it would barely work at all. Yes, it says H+ on the display instead of 4g, but I suspect I was getting H+ already, marketed as 4g, which is what they do in the states.
What's more, I'm getting Volte now with AT&T prepaid -- prepaid customers don't get Volte! (Not that it's much use with this carrier).
In call volume is fine and the speaker quality is great. It wasn't loaded with crapware and unrooted, I was able to disable some system apps (some apps, like the calculator, are terrific).
Regarding the battery: I got a lemon. It's lasting a full day, maybe a day and a half -- but I'm a light user! No gaming, not even online much. I don't run anything except for downloaded audiobooks. But it goes to show you how much I love the phone that I wouldn't even consider sending it back for warranty service. All the way to China? I'd be without it for days, maybe weeks!
It's not perfect. I can't believe TV out is missing -- no way to connect to a monitor with OTG, no matter how many adaptors you use, I'm told. And Xiaomi's firmware prevents you from doing full backups or downloading nonessential updates unless you're on wifi. They claim you can toggle this, but they're sneaky buggers ... you toggle, it says downloading, but when you look for the completed file it says 'scheduled'. I *****ed and moaned in the forum, but hundreds have cried before me, to no avail.
There are a few odd little paternalistic issues with the OS -- not that ATT and Samsung don't dictate what I can do with my device and service -- they're a thousand times worse -- but their preferred forms of control are motivated by profit, not concern for what's 'good' for me. What do they care if I guzzle data?
On the other hand, Xiaomi employees actually monitor the forums. After the major software update, they solicited bug reports and issued fixes for them in a couple of days -- even for the minor bugs.
On a 1 to 10 scale, the phone is a 20, and I'm thrilled to learn they have a wide range of electronics to check out because -- so long Samsung, you suckered this consumer for the last time.
I do love Xiaomi Mi Max 2 except one thing. I can't unlock bootloader on MIUI 9 Global Stable, I get the error 86006 (with some Chinese letters). I know that it can be fixed by flashing on developper rom but I would like to get it fixed without flashing the device.

Yep, I had the same problem. I don't understand why Xiaomi does this.
I ended up giving in and installed a fresh dev ROM and then it worked perfectly.
Loving mine in Canada. I am a heavy user minus gaming(unless you count Scrabble) and I get 2 full days on a charge consistently. I stream sports and movies onto it, lots of music and other normal surfing/social media stuff and it doesn't get hot and the battery just keeps on going. It's early but so far I would definitely recommend the phone and the company. Excellent build quality and attention to detail. This phone was made with me in mind

Question Is the Zenfone 9 worth buying now?

Currently own a Samsung Z flip 4 and honestly, I'm loving it. The only problem is that a lot of users are reporting about how fragile the hinge of this z flip 4 and I'm afraid mine will break down anytime soon.
With that I'm planning to sel this phone and switch to a traditional brick phone.
Currently my choices are Zenfone 9 or the Pixek 7. I'm looking for a compact phone with good specs and can last me at least 3 to 4 years before I upgrade. Need some feedbacks here on how the zenfone 9 is as my last asus device was the zenfone max waaay back 2015.
Massive differences in size between the phones. I'd say the camera on the Pixel is far superior, but how much does that matter to you? That's not to say the Zenfone 9 isn't good.
Although a few bugs have been reported, and Asus is fixing them, I'm happy with the phone. The battery is excellent; it feels very snappy. I don't miss wireless charging, the software is close to stock.
The best questions to ask yourself are, what are the important requirements you want from a phone?

Also 120hz vs 90hz. While some people don't see much of a difference for me it is notable downgrade.

Agreed! I know how my Pixel 5 feels versus my Zenfone 9; the difference in responsiveness is pretty significant!
If you want to use the phone 3 to 4 years then take note that the Asus only gives 2 years of updates

For those not averse to using custom ROMs, there's the possibility of unofficial support from volunteer developers. Not something I would recommend for common people, though!

Sorry to bump an old thread but as far as I can tell there are no Zenfone 9 custom ROMs? I've got a Pixel 5 that's on its last legs and I'd love to upgrade to something similarly sized but I don't want to lose all the Pixel-exclusive software features, sadly there arent any Pixel ROMs for Zenfone that I can find.
