Best non-stock rom for mido - Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 Questions & Answers

Hello. It's me again, with another part of whole process called "make your smartphone just like you".
I've got this nice and shiny phone for about a month or so, I was able to unlock it on the second try (not sure why myfriends decided to turn it down the first time, but don't think that matters now), now I'll like to install custom TWRP 3.2.1.0. I've read today, that I do not need to make a factory reset after doing so. Is it correct? Is it just a misunderstanding?
Anyway, which custom rom do You consider to be the best? I would of course like to have newest Android, instead of being still in version 7 (which is not bad, but if it could be better, why shouldn't I use it?).
I do not have any specific features that I would like to have, but having plenty of configuration options is always nice.
For other options I do not really have an opinion, what should be important and what should be irrelevant. I've read that You could improve photo quality by using this stuff, but I'm not sure is it true or not. https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/
If it would be possible, I would gladly accept FHD recording in 60 FPS (not sure if this is available in stock) and MAYBE (if possible again) better quality of night photos. Far the most important thing is battery life and no bugs. If the rom is having issues with getting network, gps, bluetooth or anything else, I'm dropping it at once. Also, stability and ability to work without reseting itself or crashing is wanted by me. I've also heard that some mods could be quieter than stock and I would also like to avoid that. And some extra points will be granted for mod WITHOUT most of the google apps, since I'm not using them and actually deleting them from any rooted phone. From what I remember, installing new ones has not been a problem, even on stock phone, but uninstalling them when You get it on start is pain the neck.
Thanks for any help that might be useful!

you've posted thread in wrong neighbourhood
anyways post here https://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-note-4 in order to get more help suggestions regarding Mido

Oh, one more thing - I did not specify it before. My CPU is Snapdragon, so I believe it makes a difference.

OmniROM, NitrogenOS, ResurrectionRemix 6.0 all should be good to go, you can look through the respective threads to see what extra functionality/customization they offer and then decide.
Personally i recommend flashing FrancoKernel over (compatible with all above).
Also flash Nano or Pico Gapps if you want bare minimum google package.

I'm right now on Omni.

An extensive list of Oreo ROMs for mido is here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-note-4/help/extensive-list-oreo-roms-mido-t3741277
Take your pick. I prefer ROMs based on AOSP-CAF, because they tend to be lean and skinny.
As far as camera is concerned, it all depends on your camera sensor. I have a Samsung sensor, and I find cstark27 mods of GCam very good - see https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/dev-cstark27/

Ok, I'll look into it. Next question – how do I check which camera sensor do I have?

You will need to search the forum for that.

I'm also curious about this. I just ordered a Redmi Note 4 Global, 4/64 (mido) and I'm trying to figure out which Oreo ROM I should go with: Pixel Experience or unofficial LOS 15.1. I'm leaning towards the latter because of that sweet Treble support, but I don't know if it's more stable than Pixel Experience or not. Or if there's a ROM more stable than those two.
I'm interested in installing Magisk, the Xposed Oreo beta, Viper4Android, various Xposed modules and root apps. I want to stay away from SuperSU and SuperUser because they don't pass SafetyNet, AFAIK.

That is good. You may also want to try Arnova's V6 GCam mod. That seems to be even better than cstark27.

Current State of LineageOS 14.1

Hey guys. Does anybody know what bugs/missing functionality we currently have with the LineageOS 14.1 nightlies? https://download.lineageos.org/h830
I'm not a huge fan of LG's stock ROM, but I would like full functionality of my phone if I switch to a custom ROM. Thanks!

You can never get full functionality of LG Stock ROM on any custom ROMs.
Even though I have not flashed LOS, I can tell you few things that may not work.
1. Wide Camera
2. IR Blaster
3. Most Probably any friends modules if you own them.
I'm interested in knowing too before I try it. As long it's stable with all cameras working, I'd be fine.

Well, I've been on los for a while now..
-As far as I know NFC is not working (on not using it so no idea, but it seems to drain the battery an not work properly)
-BT works for eg headphones but not for headsets
Charging is still an issue. It is faster now but still not even close to fast charging. An on a 3rd party charter or is ridiculously slow
-the wide angle camera is working but you have to toggle between the cameras to get to it. The auto focus might be a problem, but it is mostly solved I think.
-playing music is sometimes a drag, and can be laggy
-FM radio is non existing, not supported, will probably never be...
Other issues have been solved, other pop up, but since there are weekly updates, that's what it is.
-be careful, root has to be installed separately and if you don't do so, immediately after installing the ROM, you will most likely end up in the famous Twrp bootloop..
Before installing it I'd read at least the last 20 pages in the forum, these should give you an idea... Or go to the fulmics ROM. It is stock based so everything should be working. To my knowledge all the LOS based ROMs share the same issues.

General Mi 9 discussion

I see the Mi 9 will be receiving an update soon which will add extra shortcuts to the fingerprint unlock menu etc

Would be good if this menu can be customized in the global ROM too
anyway, i'll switch to xiaomi.eu once my bootloader is unlocked, this rom includes all china beta features as well.
What's the main difference from Global Beta?

Hi Justintime,
i'll just copy the text from another forum:
China Build (CN)
The China Build doesn't contain Google Apps and Services (GAPPS) and contains some Chinese apps and services, which according to some is called bloatware, but for Chinese people those are actually very useful. The problem of not having GAPPS can be easily solved by heading to this thread:Find all the Google Apps in Google installer! Just install the app then in it contains all the Google apps, Google Service Frameworks, Google Account Manager and Google Play Services necessary for you to use it as a full fledged normal Android phone. China ROMs usually comes with more features than Global ROMs, as they have no conflicting copyrights issues and have less restrictions than the Global market. There will be certain elements of Chinese within, as translation work might not be absolutely complete for certain parts of the ROM. Also, Google integration via installation through applications might be imperfect and could cause issues.
Global Build (MI)
Preferred by most global users, this build comes with full GAPPS without the Chinese apps and services. Usually updated at a later period than the China build, the Global Build comes with English as the default language, with multilanguages for certain devices. In exchange for full GAPPS, users lose some features such as online music and Xunlei download accelerator, but gains some more usable storage space. The Global Build usually comes with only Stable ROMs, but the Redmi 1S is the first devices to receive a Global Developer Build. Today, nearly every internationally-launched device by Xiaomi has a Global Developer ROM. You get a native GAPPS integration, but loses on some functionalities, still a pretty good trade-off for many as installing GAPPS on a China ROM might still give problems with use of Google services. The other significant benefit over the China ROM is the language packs within (which is one of the reasons MIUI Global ROMs are usually bigger in size than MIUI China ROMs), which is great as many prefer their native tongue over English.
to tell you simple: xiaomi.eu rom combines all advatages of both roms in one

There won't be.
Just curious, was debating picking up the Explorer Edition from Giztop, but will it's slightly different hardware cause problems for custom ROM's etc?
I got my Transparent version (Explorer Edition) yesterday. I had to go get a new sim card because the sim card holder in my S7 is broken and won't open. Cricket was a nightmare to deal with and tried to tell me the phone won't work with US carriers. They also kept telling me the IMIE was one short, which a quick google search (while at the store) explained to me, we had to look it up via the dialer and not in the settings screens. After that drama, I had to move everything over manually from the S7 as it didn't have GAPPS and didn't auto sync from the S7. So far like the phone, but am not a big fan of MIUI. I requested it be unlocked and now have to wait a boatload of time before I can remove the ROM that came with it. It sucks that the AI button is going to be useless for a while.
Nova launcher is working great though so far. I am not a big fan of how the notification bar works (I think I would like a two row option, lol) and for some reason gmail notification doesn't include the subject line. I also am mississing having the middle button at the bottom (of the screen) to wake the phone up. It's nice that they provided a case, but I wish it wasn't dark tint as it hides the cool back side of the Explorer Edition and I also would wish it was thick enough so the camera didn't stick out a little. If anyone has found a good clear TPU type case that is thicker, please do share/tell. Last, I am going to miss the notification light changing colors like it does on the S7, but overall its an awesome phone.

even after unlocking bootloader (2 weeks, so mid-April) there still wont be any Custom ROMS available for this phone (except for the slight variations of the MIUI Official\EU\China Firmware) ..I would suspect nice Roms like Syberia will come in June at soonest.. maybe even July.
I myself also bought my mi9 WAYY too early and now regret it.. Should have waited a few more months when Development starts and I also may have gotten it cheaper later
(I installed Syberia on my Mix 2 immediately after getting it and unlocking it -which I also bought for just 249 a year ago- because the phone was already out many months.. I wont be able to do that with mi9 ;-(

Whilst there aren't many custom roms, it's still cool to be able to root and install Magisk, along with xposed too! You can tweak quite a bit with this, adblock, viper4android, substratum theme, debloat etc
Development is fun and believe me I miss it too, but we get weekly updates from roms like the EU rom, which has additional features and debloated too.
Give it a chance. Definitely early days, but we already have a great gcam port and whilst not many roms, it's just a matter of time surely

I miss Google dialer for that, with caller ID or detecting spam
I am probably one of the only people that liked the Samsung dialer (lol). You can still use the Google dialer, I found an apk here on xda that works with our Mi9 EE. I never used that, I like a dialer that opens with the dialer screen, which is appears the Google one doesn't.

Should I change MIUI for a custom ROM?

Hey there, how are u doing?
I just got my Poco X3 NFC (was using Mi A3), and I kinda feel like pure android is really better to use in general than MIUI (at least for me). Wondering if it's better to change it now, since I don't have much on phone (less than 1 week) or just keep MIUI because 12.5 is about to get there.
Was checking the forum and found a lot of ROMs, but I don't really get if's not "the same" as MIUI, since it's an Android ROM with modifications based on... something they wanted to change. Most popular ROMs seem to be ArrowOS, Ressurection-Remix, and others non official ROMs (LineageOS have Android 11 already). I have NO IDEA what I should be looking in general, no idea what is Selinux, permissive, don't flash with some softwares, etc. Not sure if it affects how I will use it commonly tbh.
I mean, I usually use my phone to access social media, use a lot of spotify/youtube, and I probably will need to root to have a good Linux machine running there for my studies (actually using UserLand), that's why I'm wondering about ROMs. Battery is really important since I run a virtual machine imo.
So, what do u think? Should I change MIUI with another custom ROM or just keep it because XIAOMI upgrades it frequently? Would you recommend some ROM in specific? As I said, just want good battery life and QoL using my apps and Bluetooth connection (phones and smartwatch 24/7).
Never used custom ROMs tbh, but would give a shot. Always loved community based stuff
On Xiaomi you can always flash stock and relock bootloader if you need to unlike Samsung (thanks Knox /s)
ArrowOS is my recommendation. Well made ROM. You can also flash F1xy kernel if you want more fluidity with still good battery life.
Only thing is you don't have the features of stock MIUI camera and flashing ANX Camera on ArrowOS didn't worked for me. If you want that, you can use crDroid which has it built-in.
Flash it. It offers better performance, good battery life + it's nice & clean. You can notice it simply by doing basic tasks. Less frames are dropped.
For OTA, do dirty flash of ROM, but I prefer clean flash as it makes sure that there are no bugs related to dirty flashing + I'm starting clean. I do clean flash every time I notice that Device side changelog is changed. I'm using ArrowOS which has updates almost every day. crDroid updates often too. Like once in 7 day, but it's not the fixed schedule. NitrogenOS updates every 15 days-1 month.
NitrogenOS was my ROM before, it was good, but ArrowOS is just better. ArrowOS & basically other ROMs are based on newest sources while NitrogenOS is the only ROM right now that is still based on 12.0.3 firmware. ArrowOS has Enforcing seLinux unlike Nitrogen etc. These small things is what makes ArrowOS better ROM than others. Only crDroid can "fight" with it imo.

I´ve had the phone for around 3 weeks now and it´s the first phone in years that I haven´t unlocked and installed custom Roms.
The reason is that my bank detects unlocked bootloader and I cannot use Google Pay which I use on a daily basis.
After debloating the phone and setting up the relevant apps so they don´t get shut down by the aggresive MIUI battery savings I am really satisfied. I also have a smartwatch connected 24/7 and I get around 8-9 hours SOT. Just normal usage, no gaming.
I also installed the MI Control Center from Play Store to customize the control center which is quite cool giving a bit of a customized look.
The only thing I am not to keen about is the fact that the Android security has not been updated since november 2020.
So far I am sticking with stock and looking forward to see what Miui 12.5 will be like.

I don't use much cameras, just on my job tbh. As I said, just want a good battery to use my Linux on background (I already do it all day basically, I would say), and free ads (disabled all of them on MIUI, I think). Like, for example, installed Vanced YT on my Mi A3 in 5 minutes, while I reinstalled 3 times on POCO X3 and still can't log-on.

Not sure if my bank do that... hope it doesn't. Yes, lot of apps are useless and uninstalled already.
I only "game" idle games, which means like 30 mins/day.
Still wondering if I should or not try a ROM. Probably will on weekend since I won't use it.
Oh, and BTW, my night mode is kinda buggy in a few apps, had to disable it on android and use in-app features. Not sure if it's MIUI problem, but never happened on my Mi A3.

Like I wrote my bank in Denmark detects unlocked bootloaders. So there is no way I can use my bank apps as long as the bootloader is unlocked .
I had problems using ArrowOS on my Redmi Note 8T and called the help service in my bank. When I told him my phone model the helpdesk guy asked me right away if I had unlocked my bootloader which I "admitted" I did. Turns out that the guy knew eveything about custom Roms, unlocked bootloaders and rooted phones. He told me that most banks in Denmark put safety first and do anything to lock out devices with unlocked bootloaders even if Safetny passes without problems.
So I haven´t even tried unlocking the bootloader on my X3 NFC as I use my bank apps and Google Pay everyday.
And I am actually quite satsfied with stock MIUI after debloating and twirking. Looking forward to see how 12.5 will improve the phone.

The most sensible answer is if you must ask, you don't need it. You'll likely get over your head, screw up your phone, whine and cry for help, when no one can cuz you're not even sure what, how, when or where you went wrong and don't remember exactly what you did, you'll end up regretting the whole thing, wish you never came to this site in the first place cuz now you gotta $250 paperweight, with no way to get another one. Now your parents are super mad and pretending you don't exist, you've resorted to eating only peanut butter n jelly sandwiches for every meal.. All this cuz you wanted a custom rom... yup

All this cuz you wanted a custom rom... yup

Yeah, Xiaomi implemented a 168 hour wait time for unlocking bootloader in all new devices.

A couple of years ago or a bit more, I had a problem with a bank app here in Italy. It was possible to install it, it opened but was never able to login to my account with a "generic error". After calling the helpdesk, they did a check and informed me that the app didn't work for ROOTED PHONES...
One week after this call, my new account in another bank was active and fully operative so I moved all my money to the new bank.
If anyone would react in this way, this kind of abuses by banks will end very soon...

No, I wasn't like this in the beginning, like my first sentence says, if you have to ask, it probably isn't for you cuz it demonstrates a few lacking qualities that surely would make this difficult. No offense to OP but I'm being realistic, speaking of going back to the OPs question, he asks whether he should rock a custom rom or not. How can anyone realistically answer that for him? The only one that has that definite answer is the person asking it. No one here knows his skills, amount of knowledge, patience level, whether he can follow instructions or a tutorial well enough, whether he enjoys or tolerates reading, disposable cash, if he funks up a daily driver, can it be replaced, ect.... these are all key in learning and practicing installing roms. Going back to what I said originally if you must ask, meaning that you can't determine this for yourself, it's highly likely there's other things you can't do for yourself. Everyone here knows 99.9009% of this is done independently, reading these threads and trying things out. Plus 99.9999% of answers to questions pertaining to modding our devices are in these threads, yet so many fail to search instead go straight to the questions forum, create a new thread asking same question answered 5x already. So if someone comes here asking a question only they truly have answers to, are they likely to miracoulsly be independent suddenly or someone frequently needing assistance unable to perform tasks themselves? Once again back to my original post, "they've demonstrated this kind of work ethic already."
Yea I know my answer wasn't something some want to hear but I call it as I see it.

Question Daily driver custom ROMs?

Hi, I'm interested in picking up a BC62 but are any of the currently available ROMs stable enough for daily driving?
I'm still living in the last decade and prefer the fully custom experience, but I suppose just getting root and bootloader unlock may be sufficient nowadays...
Apologies if this question is an easy one or frequently asked, I couldn't find much.
as you see, there is no supported custom roms for this device. You can try GSI roms.
unfortunately price too high and community not enough for devs
Well technically there's one custom ROM...but idk if it's still gonna be supported...i may try to build some now that the guides are up tho
I see there are a few abandoned ones under development but there's little talk about living with them. Guess nobody really does, ha.
Circumstances are just pushing me to switch carriers (and therefore phones) and it's hard to part with the custom ROM life. At least Sony OEM software is decent and root/unlock is actually supported.
I look forward your future projects, @Ainz_Ooal_Gown !

And how it works?
i just tried GSI a12 rom and camera didn`t work, ambient display didn`t work, autobrightness didn`t work. Back to stock
I used the Lineage ROM that's here ( https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/rom-11-unofficial-lineageos-18-1-for-xperia-1-iii.4431701 ) for a few months. Unfortunately it comes with an outdated VideoPro app that can't be updated due to missing libraries (Theoretically you can if you mod a newer APK, but I'm not very experienced in coding and wasn't able to make it work). Also this meant Sony-specific apps like 3D creator, etc... won't install or update without modding them.
The only other problem I noticed was 5G NSA didn't work, just LTE with carrier aggregation at best. This wasn't a big problem personally since 5G NSA isn't reaaaallly an improvement all else being equal.
There were a couple other bugs / differences. The assistant button wouldn't function even with the Xperia+ app, and using the camera button to open the camera app behaved differently in a way that I didn't like. Probably a couple smaller things I'm forgetting about that I just lived with without issue.
Not being able to update or install Sony-specific apps was the deal breaker eventually. If I knew how to mod APK's to install/update them, I'd still be on that ROM today. It was actually really good. My battery life was noticeably better (probably mostly due to lack of 5G), I had no stability issues, the ROM was light and fast and I got all the customization that comes with Lineage out of the box.
i get it why there arent custom roms. what i dont get why arent any debloated stock rom either. sony does not have bloatware ?

Because there's no value in doing this.
Just get a root uninstaller and yeet the bloat.
As someone who tried a lot of roms, just don't. They all have serious demerits that are just not worth it.
Honestly it's quite jarring coming from Xiaomi/Samsung where custom roms are extensive are necessary or a worthwhile alternative respectively. I hoped we wouldn't need the size of community for this phone as everything is supposedly open source (or provided), but experience tells us otherwise. The phone is just too expensive -> phone doesn't go to eastern (read: eastern-europe and SE asia) developers and development just never takes off.

Question Software Questions about the 23U

My questions may seem dumb but I have never owned a Samsung phone.
I know samsung likes their bloatware and proprietary methods. Can I avoid all the samsung bloat and a samsung account and still use the phone? Are there ROMs that give a stock android experience?
Also what are you guys seeing for SOT? Im coming from a Asus ROG 6 Pro.
Any bugs you guys are experiencing? My 6Pro is so full of bugs that has pushed me to move brands.
You don't need a custom rom, you don't even need to root it, just use universal android debloater gui from github or adb app control to remove all the bloat (both include good instructions and details about what to remove) and going through first time set up you don't need a samsung or google account.
Unless you are using an international version there is no custom ROM option. The 918U and U1 models don't have the option to OEM unlock and flash ROMs.
You can easily umbloat using the mentioned universal android debloater.
Ui downloaded the 5.0 or sth like that and updated, then it all went south.
Stayed with the 5.0 version and it works great.
As for the ROM I put Nova Launcher and it works fine
Not the same but as long as the X3 camera shoots ****ty pictures I'll leave it warranty capable

What's wrong with your x3? Mine's impeccable. Didn't hear about any other complaints whatsoever.

No bugs. Phone is super smooth and battery is amazing. About bloatware you can find everything you need in XDA thread called "Samsung Galaxy One UI - Optimization Guide".

Well, I used the "remove noise" or whatsoever option.
But for a X3 zoom I find the quality more than disappointing.
My Vivo X70Pro shots better photos.
Applied goodlock camera assistant, a bit better, and even gcam.
But quality just sucks for such a "high end" model...
Hoping on a FW fix though since with gcam its quite less worse
No issue here with 3x zoom with my S23U camera (B-version, EUX), just stock point&shoot....
Something like this ?
I'll retry with more natural light.
Maybe that's the issue.
Was pretty dark the time I took the picture
Awesome, thanks for the replies. Since there is no custom roms, do we still have unlock and root available? At bare minimum i would like to install AdAway got universal ad blocking.

We can unlock and root. Look for the guide in this sub forum. Root will tripped knox tho, so some samsung app won't work. I would suggest using adhell to block ad

No magisk module or similar to get around this?
My biggest concern is just losing the samsung camera, I hear other cameras apks dont work well with the phone.

Please try to activate night mode before switching to x3. Also in low light you need to be VERY still for the sensor and ISP to work its magic.
Moreoever, keep your lenses clean as much as possible.
These 2 photos I just shot now in a very dimly light room.

You will lose samsung wallet, I think. you should just use adhell for ease

Thx for the info, I will give it a try.

But if works like this, this is what it is .
Thanks for the info
