[Q] Start of photo burst sequence is too slow on S9+? - Samsung Galaxy S9+ Questions & Answers

Coming from S7E and bit disappointed with camera. Doing a lots of pictures of my kid and burst mode when you hold white button/volume is only chance to get at least few pics in focus. Only problem is that with new S9+ burst mode kicks in about 500ms later than it started on S7E.
So you see kid doing something interesting, point camera and hold shutter button. And wait. It takes about 1s or even more to start taking pictures and while you wait, your camera is doing nothing. On S7E burst started almost immediately, was bout 250-500ms max. Kinda disappointed with this upgrade...
Tried to find some settings for this, but there is only option to enable feature, nothing else.
UPDATE: Friend of mine checked S8 and A8, both starts burst shot almost immediately, so it is probably something new with S9+?

This is just a guess, but it could have to do with the shutter opening/closing for the amount of light in the photo prior to shooting?

Seems quite unlikely to me, because you can take regular image almost immediately...

It's likely the camera software needs optimising and tweaking. Are you on the latest firmware? I'm not, so wouldn't know if that changes anything but likely a fix will be on its way

Of course, was first I tried, though still have only G965FXXU1ARB3 available and seen newer G965FXXU1ARC5 floating around, but not yet for my carrier. Hppefully it will fix this...

So updated to G965FXXU1ARC5 and delay before burst is still there :-/

Another update and still start of burst sequence is way too slow. Any tips how to make it start faster?

I think the reason may be that the device waits to see if it was a single shot or a long press, since a single click on volume button is supposed to just click a photo, and a long press is to take a burst

Just checked mine, and while there is a slight lag, it's nowhere near a full second.

Checking your signature, are you testing it on S7E or S9+? Because I had S7E before and it started much faster, for sure under half second. I have problem with S9+ and checked S8+ and its fine similar like S7E, only new S9+ is affected...

S9+. Guess I need to update my sig!

Camera Flash

I can't seem to find a thread on this and I find it hard to believe no one else has an issue with this. In the camera on the HTC Touch Pro where the flash option is, it's "flashlight" not "flash." So you can't have the flash bulb turn on only for the picture and then turn off like an actual camera flash. What's the reason for this? Any hack to fix it?
If you use it how the Touch Pro seems to want you to...
You may as well admit the LED will burn out before it should.
i don't think the led will be burned anytime soon. have never seen a burning led. if it last for 2 year i'm happy, i would probably go a new htc by then. however i agree that having the flash turn on like that it's a waste of battery.
you know the funny part about this is i'm actually this flash as a flashlight with htctorch and it has been very useful.

Yeah, I've searched for this myself, didn't find anything. I mentioend something about it somewhere else but got no responses. Probably because the phoen was brand new and maybe not widely used yet.
In any case, LED's are rated for 100K hours of life, some may get more others less, but on average, that's their rating. Long past the noral usage of a cell phone. It does actually flash though when you take a picture.
The reasoning though (guessing) is if it's in a relatively dark room, the camera will be unable to focus properly to take the picture without it (the subject) being lit up before hand. But most people probably don't take pictures in that dark of an enviroment.
In any case, it would be better to have the actual option and let the user decide if they need pre-light or just a flash to take their picture.
hmmm.. yeah, its not a flash, its a flashlight. if anyone wants to make a hack for this to just flash, that would be so ****ing badass. that thing is so bright that peoples eyes are always squinted before the camera even focuses. its nice that its bright, but i mean, seriously.... its BRIGHT. and annoying.

+1....I was wondering too
There's a reasoning for this, at least.. the focus and metering mechanisms all function poorly in low light, so without the light on for the focus phase of the image taking, your photos would come out even worse.. it isn't the only phone i've used that behaves this way, almost any phone with a LED flash will do this, only Xenon flashes and the like will behave like a camera (brief flash on shutter release)

Camera shutter lag still there after OTA 2.08.651.2

Looks like HTC improved some things with the camera but my major complaint is still there. Even with every possible enhancement and option (including image review) turned off, there is still a 0.5 to 1.0 second lag when taking a picture in bright lighting even after everything is already focused with a half press of the shutter. I think it is improved a little, but still a far cry from what it should be. C'mon HTC: if a weak iPhone can take a picture instantly, surely you can do better than this!
Mike
I don't seem to have this shutter lag. The phone snaps the picture pretty instantly after I press the button.
Yeah, I'd say do a full wipe & reflash. 0 shutter lag here. I can't even get the image to speed blur while in motion.
This is with the latest 2.3.4 update.

Are you using the dedicated camera/shutter button? Autofocus is the only thing "auto" that I have enabled. Are you rooted with revolutionary?

For my fastest shots, I use the onscreen button, the camera button has a delay. Auto focus is off.
Yes, rooted with Revolutionary & using Haus' Stock Deodexed 2.08.651.2.
Just updated my wife's phone via the OTA. Hers has never been rooted and will likely never be rooted so I just took the OTA. Her's is exactly like mine. There's at least a half second delay on every shot. I've tried the dedicated camera button and the on screen button. Regardless of the settings or the button pressed, the camera doesn't take the picture until about a half second after you press the button.
Edit: I've never seen one of these phones not have horrendous shutter lag so if you think you have close to no lag, could you please post a short video showing this? I simply can't believe it until I see it.
Mike
I don't have another camera sorry. Sold it back when I had my EVO 4G.
I'm surprised you have this problem.
Try turning up the Exposure & ISO to 800 as well. This also speeds up the shutter on cameras. Will it be instant, I'm not sure but it'll definitely be faster.
Let me know if that works.

On a side note regarding the camera, what happened to the shutter sound on/off option? Now it's on by default and hitting menu in the camera app doesn't show it, am I crazy or is it gone?

Nothing changes it. Already tried ISO 800, shooting in direct sunlight, and every other trick I could think of. Minimum shutter lag is about a half second. Only thing I can figure is that some people call a half second "instant". It's far from it. Went to the Rays game tonight. Indoor lighting was bright as daylight: no flash needed. All pics were good at least and not blurry due to the fast shutter. But between my rooted Evo 3D and my wife's totally stock one, we missed almost every shot even when taking casual shots. And when you hand someone the camera to take a group shot, they press the shutter halfway to focus and then press the button the rest of the way and it NEVER works. Everyone always starts putting the camera down and the actual picture is taken after their hands are dropping because they've already pressed the button and nothing happened until a half second later. Again, this is with all auto stuff turned off, flash off, auto focus off, etc. Unless you are taking a picture of a rock or something else that isn't ever going to move, this camera is totally useless.

Have you tried wiping the SD card? Or used something other than the stock one?

No wipey wipey, but... my wife and I both use a SanDisk 32MB and my friend and his wife use the stock SD card. No difference. Half second delay on every shot, occasionally longer. I wouldn't think the SD card or it's speed would come into play for actually taking the shot: only afterward in storing it.

How quick does SG3 wake?

I'm sooo close to caving in and replacing my GS2 for a 3, one of my very few pet peeves with the SG2 is how slow it wakes..
Seeing a lot of you guys came from GS2s I figured who best could answer my question of does the GS3 snap to life faster then your old GS2?
Also as long a you're answering what is the feature that most impressed you coming from the GS2? TIA.

Honestly, I find it does wake quicker than my i9100 did. Hopefully more will confirm as it may be subjective, but it tends to wake in under a second when hitting power button on mine anyway where my SGS2 was like 2 or 3 seconds when waking.
For me, you can really tell the higher resolution screen which was a plus for me. The LED light is incredible useful (no more waking phone to see if I have any messages). And the third was definitely LTE which is so much faster in my area than HSPA which seems to be really congested. Those three things made it worth the upgrade alone. All in all, maybe not a HUGE upgrade but a decent enough upgrade for myself

Nice... I know that screen is very nice.. I haven't seen anyone posting anything about the GS3 display staying on while your eyes are still on it, has this feature been included with the AT&T GS3???

Yes, it actually not your eyes it's detecting, but face. Love this feature, very useful when reading something or playing puzzle games.
The way it's working, it turns front camera on a few seconds before it dims the screen, if it detect a face, nothing happens, if no face near, it dims the screen for 5 seconds, then it checks again for a face, if found it, it turns up the brightness and resets screen timeout, otherwise shuts it off.
Wakeup time has a slight lag, but it's not annoying. However if you are using something like SetCPU and set profile to turn down CPU clock to lowest possible when screen is off, then it might not response to touches after wakeup for a few seconds.

Thanks blue265 and [email protected]
Great to hear.. I just found there is a patch to let the hard home button wake the phone which is very cool...
Having a hard time justyifying replacing my GS2 after only 8 months but damn this GS3 looks sweet....
Not to mention I'm seriously thinking of putting my iPad (Gen 1) on eBay along with my GS2, the new Nexus 7 tablet for $199 looks just as inviting as the GS3

Just for the record, at least AT&T version has this feature by default, no need any patches.

This is enabled by default on the Verizon version as well, no patch needed.
Awesome, it'd be getting the AT&T version... Now I see the GS3 Red pre-orders have started and will be available on the 29th, my resistance it's getting weaker by the minute
How have the ROMs been so far for the GS3 (the AT&T versions)?

V10 back camera won't focus auto or manual

So I got the V10 on T-Mobile the day it was announced that the bootloader was factory unlockable. I love it so far with one somewhat concerning exception (apart from the laughable battery life but *shrug*): the majority of the time when I try to use the back camera, I'm not able to focus it. In auto mode tapping to focus does nothing. In manual mode sliding the focus dial also does nothing. Third party camera apps won't focus either. I have to pull the battery and reboot and it *might* work then, and if it does it'll only work the first time I open the camera. Front cameras work fine and the focus on the back camera when it works is excellent. Has anybody else run into this or know if it's worth messing with or if I should just exchange it?
Also for clarification I was running the stock rom (rooted) but with very little frozen. Switched to black hole yesterday (triple wipe) which has been lightning fast so far but having the same issue.
Thanks!
Same
Got it last week and Ive been having the same problem. I dont have many apps but I do let my battery drain due to laziness. Thats the only bad thing I do. I'm thinking of exchanging it because ive also messed with all the settings in the manual camera and nothing. Its set to a very close 1 inch distance to focus well. Front camera works marvelous.

Yeah close focus is exactly the problem. I can take passable pictures of stuff right in front of me by physically moving the phone closer and further until it's in focus but that's useless. I'm going to go by the T-Mobile store this evening or tomorrow and see what they say.

Camera problem.

Hi, my "great" z5 compact camera broke like 1 week ago without any actual problem, the app were crashing all the time, any other app said the camera is already used, the diagnostics said that camera is "not available", and even the flashlight button on quick settings menu didnt work, lovely. I waited for some time and woke up today to working camera and no longer shy flashlight button, but the camera doesnt switch to any mode else than 5 mp "superior" auto, just crashes. When it crashed the flashlight disappeared again, but still works in the auto mode and i cant even disable it. Funny part is when i moved when making a photo, the autofocus started buzzing like crazy, vibrating the whole phone with it. i would love some help with my "premium high quality" smartphone. Thanks
Now after my autofocus got heart attack it went to the starting point, when the camera will decide to work again(and after this incident im not sure if it will) im not going to use my camera and let it sit for some time

I'd try a software repair using Xperia companion. This should at least determine if it's software or hardware. If you do this, I'd recommend a complete wipe.

I forgot to mention that once i tried opening the app, it showed like a fountain of rainbow pixels sliding across my screen ( as the camera view, it didnt cover the buttons) i dont know i this makes it easier to distinguish if its software or hardware but just mentioning, also when i went to messenger app and tried to make a photo it was alright.
