Android One update intervals delay - HTC U11 Life Guides, News, & Discussion

HTC/Google promised latest and newest updates for the Android One Version of the U11 Life. In my opinion this seems not the be the case (at this moment). The latest Software should be Android 8.1 witch security updates from March, but is 8.0 with updates from January 1. Before January updates were rolled out at the end of the month, which is not quite fast, but something you could live with. Now nobody has any clue, when/if new updates will be available.
Sadly the update promise was the main reason for me to buy the phone. HTC seems not to be interested to comment on the delay. So everyone considering to buy this phone because of the newest updates should at least wait till there's any news on this.

Hahaha what a heavy kind of flaming just because of one update and so small changes between 8.0 and 8.1 that you would not even see or know it if you dont look into the system settings info page. All updates before where published within 3 weeks after google made them available and also 8.1 and latest security updates are on their way. I just asked HTC on facebook and they told me it should come in the next days. Dont tell lies if you did not even ask them, also 3 weeks ago they already answered this question on facebook. Just read before flame.

1. no matter what the changes between 8.0 and 8.1 are, they promised to deliver fast and they haven't yet. If you don't care about Version updates, that's fine. But please have in mind that other people might care. Furthermore there are for example problems with Miracast, which might be solved with the update.
Regarding security updates- in my understanding, these should be delivered as fast as possible. There's a reason for the naming of these kind of updates. If you feel that a delay of 3 weeks or now 6 weeks is acceptable, fine. Regarding their promise, I don't. It's also not as fast as possible as Nokia has showed with delays of a few days.
.
2. I called HTC support- they couldn't tell me anything about the updates. Neither the reason for the delay nor any planned schedule. I contacted support via email too- got no answer. Even if you can't imagine, there are people who don't use facebook. Yep, one of them is me. Anyways, I didn't felt any need to get in contact with the support in every possible way. But i might be considering writing a traditional letter next time too.
I would really appreciate, if you could ask and be sure before you presume that I've told lies.
And it would be nice from you, to post a picture from the mentioned facebook posts.

100% correct bro. The Nokia non android one version was running 8.1 months ago. Check my previous posts, I myself got shut down when I enquired about updates. I dont get it, I get a feeling that the guys opposing people asking for updates work for HTC or something ? The reason why I bought the HTC u11 life android one was for regular updates, otherwise I could have gone and bought a xiaomi for half the price.
Im not giving up because now I will go and post on HTC uk twitter asking what the delay is.
Let me add to this. I want P and i also want P as part of developer Beta. Yes i do want it now
And u know why I want it, well HTC and google are very close right

Again, bang on. So what can we do about it ? I have also done support, twitter etc, and they just give u the generic answer 'when an update is available the icon at the top will notify u'
Well thank you very much for that information but that was not my question HTC.
I think more twitter public posts will put pressure on HTC to keep their promises

The weird thing is, it is the 2nd January Security Patch rather than the one from February.
The Build itself got an update though, as it was Version 1.10.401.4 before.
Maybe there are preparations for 8.1 going on, and February Patch is included in that?
Couldn't find any specific info on that, though.

As far as I have experienced HTC since my U11 Life, I don't think they will be able to launch 8.1 soon.
This company is such a mess, terrible.
Have tried all possible support channels.
Whether extremely late replies, or just saying some crap.
Well, hope dies last. We'll see. I can live with 8.0 as well very good. The only cool thing would be, if the external memory could be used as a real expansion of the internal... But that doesn't belong in this thread. [emoji4]

You are right, they now dont even answer via twitter, but im gonna keep trying. This is so so bad, bought the phone on promise, they cant even deliver security updates. Surely google are also responsible in some way ? How can these promises be blatantly broken

HTC is very bad in handling Customer requests. After they answered very good on facebook, they deleted every conversation they ever made with all users on facebook so nobody will ever see it again, they also changed the advertisment on their own webside. Till Janury they wrote "2 Years of Android Version Updates and 3 Years of monthly Security Updates" and they changed it to just "2 Years of Android Version Updates". Also they dont answer to any request now, luckily i found a german forum where someone from HTC still answers questions from users and they wrote their that something went wrong with the februar update and it will take some time to fix this. They also wrote that they are working hard to improve the time they need for the monthly security updates in the future. Related to 8.1 they wrote they still working on it and dont have an eta yet. Something happend yesterday what was a little shock for a lot of people, mo_versi (who was the most communicative man from HTC on twitter) posted that he left the company now (he was president of productmanagment). So its very unlikely that anyone will know when an update will come because he was the only one who posted real dates when the updates will start.

Tough the same for me...
My wife have the Mi A1, and today she have receive the March security update... And they still claim for treble -_-'
Very disappointed, but it's strange, it's not Google who handle the software for all the Android One ?

If we would have pure android one it would be google but we have edge sense and usonic in it and because of this HTC has to do it.
But as we can see here https://www.xda-developers.com/nokia-5-nokia-6-android-8-1-oreo-stable-update/ hdm global is much better in doing software updates. The only reason i perhaps will never get a nokia is because they dont support unlocking the bootloader.

I know, but... promised is promised, as htc promised fast updates to the latest android version they are already too late now and this is just the fist and very small version update since the launche of the device. If you think of what might happen when android P will launch, we might have to wait half a year to get this update. And this is realy ridiculous in fact that the device has project treble and android one htc dont have to do much to finish the updates.

Hi all,
is there any updates regarding 8.1 with Android One ? I expect that with Project Treble the updates come faster but it seems not...
The last update is also breaking Wifi for me... the connection disconnects very often. Anyone can reproduce the same issue ?

For Max owners such as myself it really is disheartening to see this. When scouting around the htc update site try selecting the m7. Guess what, the m7 is in the certification stage of lollipop. Now select the m8. Guess again, it is already on lollipop. The m9 comes with sense 7 and lollipop already on it. It seems to me that devs would at least have some manner in which to at least find a way to port these over to the max. Or at least one might think that.
For those who seem to get their "upgrades" just in time always seem to get the devices that htc (and especially Verizon) tend to leave behind. I myself upgraded from the Thunderbolt to the DNA and from that to the Max. All 3 of these devices were unlucky in the "love" department when it came to keeping them up to date.
NuSense 7 for the DNA by santod040 is quite possibly the best rom keeping that excellent device still alive for those still holding it. His work on the Thunderbolt was recognized for years as tireless and he has put together some great stuff.
But why the history lesson you might ask? It appears that timing has a way of getting the bulk of ownership to transfer to the newer devices while gladly taking away that data package from you. It almost appears that thousands who switched to these devices are intentionally left in the dust for capitalism to take its effects on us.
I will patiently hold on to my max as I patiently await developers like santod040 and flyhalf to find a way to get the screen, resolution, and dpi correct to run their amazing ports of lollipop and sense 7 to my max. I know good and well if I wait on Verizon and HTC to do it I would be turning 58 colors of purple right now from holding my breath!

The eye experience is indeed in development lollipop is not. Dude they didn't change it on the site you referenced just for fun. They are two separate things. Just stop... Days later you will realize how your ignorance looks... We have HTC employees on THIS SITE already claiming that Lollipop was dead months ago. I thought they were wrong as LOLLIPOP NOT EYE was still in development. However as it states on site Kitkat is the end of life for HTC One Max Verizon and Sprint and eye is still in development. It was changed about two weeks ago. You have ZERO evidence other than your pointless claims that eye means lollipop which you've already been proven wrong.

Email Reply from Oneplus about Nougat!

I have had a Oneplus Two for noticeably less than two years and the email below isn't at all good.
Sadly when Helen (Oneplus) clearly stated in June/July 2016 that we would get Nougat it's clear it's not happening according to the email I received below.
Support is obviously for less than two years unlike many other manufacturers. It doesn't instill confidence in Oneplus.

Hi Steven,
A pleasant day to you!
Thank you for reaching OnePlus Customer support.
This is Alex from OnePlus. we greatly , appreciate.
Your time and effort in reaching out to us. Your concern is of utmost importance and I will be helping you out with your ticket. As much as we would like to give the latest update on the OnePlus 2, we've discontinued updates for dated devices.
But we will continue to support the limited warranty for current users and provide updates and support the best way we can even for OnePlus 2 users.
Let me know if this helps.
Best Regards
Alex
It is a shame. it was to be expected, but it still sucks. This is the only reason why I am doubting if I should buy a Oneplus 5 next month. I am really curious to see what will happen with the support for the 3 and 3T.
Oneplus will forgive they had OP3/3T

Let's take all the community's forces to keep OnePlus 2 up to date.
And then to find out that they are going to be giving the 3T Android O....how nice of them...
With such strong community support, I still don't get the big deal with no official builds. Half the point of getting a oneplus is the community builds.
I have to assume that if you are on XDA, you know how to get a nougat update easy peasy.... Is it just that you can't be bothered to find a rom which is daily driver stable?

I have to disagree, unfortunately.
Being on XDA doesn't mean that everyone can root their device and flash a custom ROM on it. There are exceptions. I had a Nexus 6P for which I did not unlock the boot loader, because my work email will not work on an unlocked, modified device. I had to use it in Stock condition for 6 months, even when the community support is there.
Just because community support is there, it cannot be used as an excuse for the lack of official builds. Not even 10% of the total users of OnePlus2 would know what is meant by rooting. They have paid money and the company needs to provide them updates. Period. No exceptions.
This is pathetic stuff from OnePlus and I'm seriously reconsidering my decision to go for the OnePlus 5 when it comes out.
I was going to buy a Moto X style or play at that time but choose the OnePlus 2...
And now the Moto x play and style got offical nougat and the OnePlus 2 is still here on marshmallow .... ?

Well, the biggest custom rom problems are camera blobs. N camera quality is still worse than OOS quality, even with the HAL3 that we recently got, it still needs imrovements

While I understand your enthusiasm for the update to OnePlus 2. I don't want to be a spoilsport but currently, we have no update on the release dates for further updates as of now. But you will certainly receive updates.
One thing that I can assure you is that the moment we release an update your phone would show up a notification automatically about the update availability and we shall also be posting it on our social media forums for the customer awareness.
I hope the above information is helpful to you.
They just can't tell us the time frame, but they assured that the users WILL get the update at some point.
There may be a difference between receiving updates and getting Nougat...
OnePlus is killing the OP2 from the start. They did not let kernel loose until OP3 appeared. We could not have stable CM and custom roms. Even M was too late and now they do not want to update it N (even two years still have not passed).
Poor support for their flagship device

Elephone S8 Android 8.0

Hello.
So, I've got some news on new Elephone Frimware, it WILL come out, there will be some bug fixes and other stuff, but Elephone are kinda useless and don't want to give me any info on it, practically ignoring my question overall. So I would be glad, if anyone who knows anything about it can write here, what he knows about new Frimware, like what bug fixes or exact date of release, because they don't want to give me that too, they just say this, in very very bad English... "We will new Frimware soon, please wait"... So any info on anything?
So far my known bugs:
- Absolutely Camera
- Sometimes fingerprint doesn't work, somehow bugged
- Phone gets very hot
- Screen very sensitive on rain drops
- RAM management is absolute SH*T, I turn on Snapchat and messenger and I get 300MB of free ram left.... ON 4GB RAM PHONE
Thanks for help

Nice to hear that they are going to release Oreo. That means it's better to stay stock and don't remove adups package or root the phone right? By the way updating the phone to a new OS will keep the files and installed apps?

I will stay with stock and see how new update will look like, if it's gonna be okey, okey, but if it's gonna be **** like now, I will switch to other custom ROM (I saw one here, it sounds pretty good, can't remember the name right now) and yes, well probably, like other phone updates, probably this should keep files and apps on it after update, but make a backup of pictures and stuff just in case.... It's Elephone.... There is a reason why they are not on worldwide market and Samsung is....
Rooting your phone doens't matter... You can root it, just don't install any custom ROMs...

Do we have a timetable or the release is going to be like "boom" ?
You mean Eragon rom, I'm not sure if the most people decide to use Eragon instead of stock because it has some issues too.

No, nothing... They don't want to give me any info, like I said, just bad English response "We will out soon"... Yeah Eragon right... Yeah, but you must agree, that Eragon has less issues, unlike stock... MOST IMPORTANT... RAM management on stock is sh*t

Hello,
In Times of Fake News:
What's your source for that?
Beta
No 8.0 Update for Elephone S8 - Official
"Dear customer,
Please notice that S8 can be updated with a week, but it can't be available for Oreo.
Best Regards,
Elephone Team"
From my understanding this phone will NOT receive the Android 8.0 Oreo update. Hoping for some more work software wise through custom roms and such, just ordered one based off the specs and build quality for the price.
Original Question: "So the Elephone S8 will NOT be receiving the Android 8.0 Oreo update? Also, is anything being done about the known bugs?"
"Dear customer,
S8 can be updated with a week to fix those bugs, and we believe everything will be better after that.
Best Regards,
Elephone Team"
Well, that blows.

Yeah it does.. But supposedly an update for bug fixes including camera within the next week.. we'll see huh?! I'm constantly thinking about this purchase, it's still processing, $255 ish with expedited shipping (like $25 from their store) lol. Lots of controversy with this phone. I hope everyone is aware of the network availability and price point when they're buying it. I will base my review on other aspects mainly.
I have adups fota package deleted. Is there a chance for me to get the new update this week without wiping my device to factory settings?

I'd say give the update a shot, worse case is it doesn't install? But you shouldn't have to wipe.

Nice tip on improving the autofocus speed in that last one. Though it wasn't worrying me, ISO 200 seems, for want of a better word, snappy.
Good news, if you go to Elephone store for the S8 there is a QnA section. A customer asks if there will be a Oreo update and Elephone confirms Oreo comes out on May!
You can confirm it by yourself!
I don't see such a response there - just them saying that they'll release it when they get it. But maybe I'm missing it -
can you please post link Steverwray?

how's software support

How's software support from manufacturer? Will we be getting regular security patches OTA?
Will it be supported for at least 2 years?
Anybody owned an Oppo phone knows about their history with updates?
Also, is their OS smooth and battery efficient or just horrible?
Thanks for reading
I had the oppo find 7. The phone was very good in his time but the software was very buggy. Os updates were very bad and it tOok a very long time to see an update. At the end, oppo closed his website and community forums leaving europe. Fortunately, there was xda devs supporting the device like omnirom etc...
I like the oppo find x but i m very septical about the support and more about the camera mechanism durability. An other thing, viewing the camera mechanism, i douubt the phone have an ip certification.
Ps: i think oppo will leave the europe maket one more time because of their prices. They are not known in france for example and a basic configuration at 999€, peoples will prefer to buy an iphone or a samsung. Maybe a huawei or a xiaomi wich are more famous than oppo here.

I agree with you, you forgot The Lamborghini version At 1699 €. Huawei and recently Xiaomi are already well known and sold in France, paradoxically Oneplus too but not Oppo
I doubt Oppo will break into the European market. big company in Asia certainly but almost unknown in Europe and bad memories of their rotating camera on N1 and N3....
I'm from germany and i think nearly nobody here or in france/spain/italy/netherlands will ever buy this phone at a pricetag of 999€. Nobody knows Oppo so you can impress nobody with your "Noname Phone". If you want to spend that much money you simply buy an iPhone or a S9+.
The Huawei P20 Pro is only selling good at that high pricetag because of the telekom, o2 and vodafone with a contract. So you have to pay 1-300€ to get the device. An Oppo without contract is nearly impossible to sell.
Thanks guys for your replies.
ColorOS in Oppo Find 7 days were always a year behind. For instance, Android was at version 4.4 Kitkat and yet Find 7 was released with 4.3 Jelly Bean. It's true that Oppo had continued to support it for 3 years, but remember at that third year, Android was at 6.0.1 Marshmallow and yet Find 7's latest final release was Project Something OS which is 5.1 Lollipop.
For people that doesn't necessarily understand how to root, TWRP, or flash custom ROMs, something will go wrong during this process because none of those updates are OTA nor recommended by service centers.
Should something ever go wrong, Oppo official service centers will give you its original 4.3 Jellybean that does not even support unified partition of any kind.
Until this day, June 2018, people still asks me: "What kind a phone is that? The camera is amazing."
The camera is still amazing even for 2018. Unfortunately, Oppo is very bad at releasing software updates. For that department, Oneplus is the better sister company but its camera & audio is not as good as Oppo's.
I was told that if you want good audio, VIVO seems to be the better sister company but I haven't paid much attention to its camera & software update support. I hope this helps.
Anyone having an Oppo contact address? Marketing, developement section maybe. It looks like the support is bot driven. Asked them to forward my mail to the dev section, but well, lol.
To be honest Find 7 support was bad but also typical when considering it's contemporaries. At its introduction there was no monthly security update even for Nexus devices, it didn't exist. A whole bunch of OEMs were going to make you wait quite some time for updates and there would not be many. If they offer support similar to their contemporaries today as they did then it's going to be much better than it was for the Find 7.
Let's face it though; we're all going to have camera lift failure before the phone gets too antiquated.

I got money to spare and i really need a new phone (current daily driver is OP2 with official LOS 15.1).
How will the chinese version fare in Sweden/EU? I don't think localization will be an issue after setting it up, just wondering if there will be issues with 3G/4G etc.
I was looking for freqs but didn't see anything, have I missed it? I'd beware the Chinese model, those can be trouble with the play store everywhere else. That is usually overcome by development but there isn't any way to know how much development this thing will see just yet. I'd certainly wait till I knew what it's play status was and the freqs... Haven't seen anything concrete on bootloader locks if any just yet either when I think about it. You're going to need that to get where you want to go.

Twitter is the best way
I have the Oppo Find 7; bought it in 2014. If I had to use one word to describe the official software support, its 'frustrating'. The software on the phone was always 2 versions behind the latest one every year. It was released with Jelly bean 4.3 and around that time 5.0 was just around the corner. It took them 2-2.5 years to release an Android 5.1 ROM. Every major update from Oppo required the users to factory reset the device and it was very difficult for a layman to perform these flashes every time a new ROM was released. All the official ROMs released were beta - Color OS 2.1 Beta, Spectrum 1.1 Beta etc. Usually you'll find tons of custom ROMs from third party developers from China devs but flashing them on the international version of the phone bricked the device. All of the oppo community was very active in reporting bugs and flashing ROMs, but the official supporters soon closed the community website and all other oppo forums as they couldn't keep up with the updates and bug fixes. Officially the Find 7 got 7 ColorOS ROMS (2.0.0, 2.0.4, 2.0.5, 2.0.7, 2.0.8, 2.1.0, 2.1.5 from 4.4 to 5.1) and all were Beta releases. All of them had at least one or more major bugs. ColorOS isn't user friendly and takes a lot of time to get used to, its a very bad attempt to copy iOS on iPhones. The only good part of the OS might be the camera.
I went to omni and never looked back; had no problems at all. You do bring up a good point though; a person should be prepared and willing to stay on the release software for some time. I myself will want to know who is going to be developing, or if there will be any at all. I'm fine with Oreo but I'm going to need an unlocked bootloader/magisk. As to their launcher, yeah, it's junk. Easily fixed at the play store however; I know I'll have my beloved Action Launcher on there in about 5 minutes. Assuming I buy of course, a lot of questions to be answered first.

completly agreed
So basically unless we get custom roms for this phone - stay away.
I wouldn't go that far, if the bootloader is unlocked and you're good hanging on the delivered firmware it might still be a go. I would be as long as it's possible to enable double tap to wake, I hate having to swipe. The software itself was not that bad with the find 7, it was the craptacular launcher that hurt the stock experience.
All that said if a good developer picks one up and starts development that would make a buy decision easier to make.

I've had a few Oppo phones, and like others have said here, the biggest problem is software update speed. Their issue is that they use ColorOS, which is a heavy skin on the phone. They tapered it back some recently, but it still ends up making them delay updates because they have to do so much on their end.
The phones are always solid, high-quality phones. They just care too much about how the phone looks, rather than how current it is.
I have a NEX from China, and it was pretty simple to add Google services working flawlessly.
I assume same will be for FIND X which i have pre-ordered already should get it by 18th July.

Pm for now to avoid possible email spamming.
As for all the others who read this, here is a little more explanation:
He is the technical chief officer of zte and stands in direct contact with the dev team. He is also the reason we got the zip for disabling system write protection in the first place. Without him i wouldn't have gotten the update.zip (with disabled system write protection) and @raystef66 couldn't have made a flashable zip for us.

VoLTE should work on any of the big Oreo ROMs. WFC is hit or miss (even on stock ROM). I'm assuming Oreo is gonna be the last android version we can install and still have these things work (unless some dev out there finds a way to get past this roadblock in the future). Either way, I kinda doubt ZTE would provide any further updates for us beyond Oreo. I'm assuming that the response given in the OP meant that they would fix everything that's still broken and missing on 8.0; not begin development for Pie (especially since the Axon 10 is just around the corner, pulling resources into a 3-year-old phone just isn't a sound decision from a business standpoint).

It is if ZTE expect some form of customer loyalty on future purchase decisions. Would you buy the Axon 10/11/12 etc. based on your Axon 7 experience? Yes they had disruptions from trade sanctions etc. but that's not the consumers fault and imo ZTE should be doing everything they can to restore faith in their brand.
They're basically starting again.
They need an affordable flagship like the Axon 7 was. If they don't, it will be hard to gather enough sales to start a customer pool and try for return purchase later on.
Current customers are wary, sceptical and untrusting after that whole fiasco and rightly so.

They just need to copy and paste the Axon 7 with newer specs.
Maybe bumping it to 6" in order to have more internal space would do the trick.
I still can't understand how did they think that the Axon 9 Pro was a good idea. They litterally took all that was great about the A7 and...deleted it.
Now...a bit of an on topic question. Instead of releasing 8.0, could they not enter the Android One program with it...especially since they were aiming for stock experience?
Maybe it's been asked before, but what are the implications of entering the AO program, because IIRC, I may have read some time ago something about a partition not existing on the device and ZTE not gambling with a large release, but I can't remember specifically?

The vendor partition stuff is something else entirely. Some people believed that ZTE would bring Treble support to the Axon while that made very little sense (Treble is a requirement for phones that SHIP with Oreo and above, but it's optional for Oreo, and its main advantage is it makes it easier for OEMs to update major Android versions). It was developed by djkuz and NFound eventually anyways, but only because of the generic ROM benefits
I don't think you can simply slap Android One certification on the middle of a product's life, but even if they could, it would make absolutely zero sense for them... Why be commited to security updates and newer Android versions on a phone that has surely stopped giving any revenue since long ago? Plus I'm not even sure if people prefer stock Android to stuff like One UI where you have a bunch of options
Do not expect to much from ZTE for the Axon 7. Until now they did not release a stable OS and it will not change for the next update.

Marshmallow and Nougat were perfectly stable, if not the chinese versions. i'd say that counts.
The important thing is them fixing Daydream because it doesn't only entail adding daydream back, to run it properly you need to have thermals and the kernel properly tuned. Daydream should put the phone at ~1.3 GHz but I believe they'll have to mess around to make it work as intended anyways
plus all this is useful for LOS
Marshmallow and Nougat had a very bad design and UI because of mifavor. Oreo is nice but extremly unstable.

All I'm saying is, @GodOfPsychos contacted this ZTE guy, he said that an update was going to be released, and then XDA'S EDITOR IN CHIEF contacted that guy and got the same response (with which an article was made). They can bail at any time, but it's not like they are promising Pie anyways

We won't get official Android Pie for Axon 7.
The most I read into that is update to include cut out features like Daydream, probably a security update too. Just a finish of what Oreo 8.0 was supposed to be. I don't think we will even see official Oreo 8.1
If they had just kept with the whole "best sounding phone" idea I'd probably already have bought another ZTE. It was the thing that distinguished them in the crowded market of samey-same phones. At this point I'm clinging to my Axon 7 with my tight little hands, and any update to its stability will be appreciated. [Full disclosure, I'm running the GSI Liquid Remix unofficial build of Pie, but if they do update the official Oreo and get it rock solid, I could see downgrading just to be on an official ROM.]
