Customizing Cingular ROM (links, 8.5 -> 12 MB free)

Here are some tips for saving some space / deleting links from Start Menu. All tips are working and tested on Qtek 8500 with the latest Cingular test ROM (4_1_.1.502.4). This ROM has ClearVue and some Cingular stuff. (Unfortunately you have only 8.45 - 8.50 MB left).... Now I have about 12.0 MB free...
Have you any other tips? Write it down. ;-)

I can't delete the files it says that memory might not be sufiecient or i may not have the permissions to delete them. How do I fix that?
What files are you unable to delete? Dont delete the files from inside the phone... Connect WM to the PC using ActiveSync, browse to the files you want to delete (you will only have to confirm deleting because the files are set read-only).
// You cant delete programs if they are running / open
Yes even then I can't delete. The files I am unable to delete are the ones in the /Windows and the /Program Files folders. It asks me to confirm whether i want to delete the read-only file..but yet after that I'm unable to delete them..it says memory is too low and/or i don't have the permissions to delete read only files, something like that.
No, the programs are not running..i cannot delete any of those files in the /Windows or the /Program Files folder.
I was unsucessful first time trying to delete these files (I have been using Resco Explorer). Maybe you have to delete the links to these files first and restart.
success
hi, i was successful in deleting all the files mentioned and making the changes necessary. It took the following steps:
Delete all you can
Reboot
Delete remaining
Reboot
Delete last few
Reboot
Check the deletions.
Also, what you might want to do is make your mail and internet explorer to save by default on your storage card.
My windows mobile live is refusing to work on this phone....any idea why? Or maybe if i could get a fresh copy of the mobile live. It somehow installs the mobile live, but doesn't uninstall the WM5 pocket msn and this might be the problemo.
would appreciate any help.
I managed to get them deleted, the test rom did not allow that. Had to upgrade to this current cingular rom to be able to remove everything.
should be a windows live messenger link here http://rapidshare.com/files/24689015/Windows_Live_for_Windows_Mobile.rar
The Internet explorer now supports Iframes with scrollbars and have Home Page... by default live search by MS.
(reg) Change IE homepage
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer ... change the value of home_0409 from file://\windows\about_0409.htm to http://www.google.com or any url/file you like
(reg) Java applications on Card
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Tao\JMM ... change the value of DataPath from \Applicaton Data\Tao\intent to sometnig like \Storage Card\Java\Tao\intent AND (fil)(!!!) move the intent folder (containing rofs_target.zip) to the exact location on Storage Card

Thank you
Díkes, tohle jsem potřeboval
edit: there is no reason for deleting the stwater.. file, as it will be recreated the next time you reboot your phone, or change your wallpaper - the stwater is a kind of "image" of your wallpaper, in 2 different sizes
This is very useful
After each ROM install I come back here to delete unnecessary stuff.
Very useful in getting a few KB for more apps.

[Q]editing png files in apk

I have a question, ive decompiled the apk, and edited some png files.
But since the old smiley files were much too big when shown in the mms.apk Ive used some that are small like 33 x 33 insted of 67 x 67
I get error when trying to recompile it. If i then make the 33 x 33 to 67 x 67 files it will compile just fine.
Is there a line in a xml file I need to edit befor it will allow me to use these small filers? or is there a line in a xml file that defines the size of them ?
or in a smali file?
Please reply
fixed but bypassed the compile.
I think that if you are going to modify .png only, you can just open the .apk using 7zip and replace/modify the file you want without compiling/decompiling.
I know I didn't answer your question, but just showing an easier way in case you didn't know.

Thumbdata Answer
Yes there is a way... You need a Hex Editor. Open your thumbdata file with this Hex editor. A jpg file starts ff d8, ends ff d9. find and copy ff d8 to ff d9 and save it as a new file in Hex editor. Find that saved file on your pc and make it '.jpg' and have fun. If your thumbdata is not corrupted, it works well.
Hi,
thanks for the answer. When i search for ff d8 its giving as no pattern found. but when i search for ff or d8 it comes up and d9 doesnt come up.
what should i do now ?
Hex Editor Neo
Try Hex Editor Neo. Open file and go Edit/Find/Type -> Select 'HEX' then search ff d8. There must be hundreds of ff d8/ff d9, no way. If you cant find again, let me see one of that file if it has no very special content.
Will iy work in my Android phone
I tried the above steps and saved the files but I ain't able to open it. Is there any problem or I need to do it in my pc.

It contains 96x96 pixel versions of your photos. The file is simply a concatenation of JPEG files. You can split it into individual JPG files by searching for the signatures indicating the start and end of a JPG file, i.e. the two bytes FF D8 for the start and FF D9 as the end. If you can transfer the file to your computer and you can access Python, the following Python code will extract the files (name the file thumbdata3.dat):
#!/usr/bin/python
"""extract files from Android thumbdata3 file"""
f=open('thumbdata3.dat','rb')
tdata = f.read()
f.close()
ss = '\xff\xd8'
se = '\xff\xd9'
count = 0
start = 0
while True:
x1 = tdata.find(ss,start)
if x1 < 0:
break
x2 = tdata.find(se,x1)
jpg = tdata[x1:x2+1]
count += 1
fname = 'extracted%d03.jpg' % (count)
fw = open(fname,'wb')
fw.write(jpg)
fw.close()
start = x2+2
The program will save the files with the names extractednnn.jpg, where nnn is a number.

weird file extension, maybe encrypted? is there a way to access them??

so I trying to assets ripping/mod the game; I already locate most if not all the assets for the game
the problem is that its use weird extension, so I can't modify them
change it to
.zip
.rar
.7z
nothing
TrID. no avail
magic number
It shows something but its kinda nothing
file signature says
6E 73 69 66 ( nsif ) .nsi
6E 73 08 00 ( ns ) .ns
6E 73 08 00 ( ns ) .nsj
can't really find anything with that
with a simple deduction
those extensions came from the game name (the ns part) and looking at the size
.nsi so like i for Image(?)
most likely image/texture pack files like
.png
.pvr.ccz
.nsj j for js as in javascript or JSON(?)
the other most likely script to run the assets like
.toml
.plist
.xml
or something like that
for these files, judging by the size, maybe it's a sliced-up version of the original file
so it's like an original or made-up file extension
and I don't know how to access them
other things I could do probably debug the .apk and see how it treats those assets
there is also .exe version so I could try the same
but my android studio/visual studio is not in a good mood for some weird reasons, too much weird errors
so is there a thing I could do with the file to make it accessible?
I attach some files if anyone interested
