CURRENT PROJECT STATUS:
BETA v4.09-B01 [Nougat:7.1.1]
WHAT IS SAFESTRAP?
Safestrap is a Bootstrap / Recovery for locked bootloader phones. The goal is to avoid touching your primary system (I'll call this "stock" system) and only flash or make large changes to another place on your phone that Safestrap treats as a "2nd system" (in this case, it's a series of virtual ROM slots located on the internal emmc area: "/sdcard"). Once installed, you will see a "Splashscreen" giving you the option to hit "menu" to enter recovery. The recovery portion of Safestrap is now based on TWRP 3.3.0 (a touch based recovery) and you can perform .zip installs, backups and restores here. The additional features I've added to TWRP are mostly located under the "Boot Options" menu:
Here you can create virtual ROM-slots for flashing ROMs. NOTE: The bigger you make the /data partition the less room you will have to make other ROM-slots.
You can activate a new ROM-slot by choosing the slot you wish to make active and then selecting the "Activate" button. Once active, you will see the "rom-slot#" up in the top of the screen shown in green. If you make the "stock" ROM active, then you can see it in the top shown in red.
Once a ROM-slot is active, all actions you would normally perform using TWRP are directed to that ROM-slot. For example, "Install" to flash a .zip, backup and restore.
HOW DO I INSTALL SAFESTRAP?
Requirement: Root
APK install:
Once installed, open up the Safestrap application, Agree to the disclaimer that you won't try to sue me and hunt me down with a rifle if you manage to break your phone..
Then use the "Install Recovery" button. You should see the current version down in the lower left corner of the window. And the "Status:" should say "Installed" when you're done.
From there you can reboot and you *should* see a new splash screen during the boot up. While this is showing you can enter Safestrap Recovery using the [ menu ] button.
Flashable zip:
Flash using Safestrap recovery or FlashFire.
HOW DO I ENTER RECOVERY?
During each reboot a splashscreen will be displayed showing whether the device is running a rom-slot or on the "Stock ROM".
Press the button shown on the screen to either enter "RECOVERY" or "CONTINUE" booting (or the hard button underneath each option).
HOW DO I UPGRADE SAFESTRAP?
APK:
Push the APK up to your sdcard.
Boot back into the "stock" rom-slot.
Open your old Safestrap app and use the "Uninstall Recovery" button
Browse to where you pushed the APK
Click on it and install like normal
Once installed, open the APK, Grant SU access, Use the "Install Recovery" button.
Flashable zip:
Flash using Safestrap recovery or FlashFire.
KNOWN ISSUES:
- Sometimes the installation doesn't work correctly. If you don't see the splashscreen after a rebooting. Install Safestrap again.
- Busybox is now required for the Safestrap APK to work correctly

WARNING: Safestrap is heavily modified to be "Safe" for your device. Do not download TWRP from their website and expect it to work the same way. Also TWRP does not support Safestrap, tho some issues that may come up will be TWRP dependant, please try and contact myself or look on the forums for your device for answers before hunting down TWRP people. They won't be able to help w/ Safestrap specific questions.
Special Thanks To
@Hashcode, DeesTroy & TeamWin for all their hard work making TWRP such a fantastic recovery.
@jrkruse for pointing me that S8 has permissive root. @partcyborg for getting root on S8.
@me2151 for testing and getting the right configs in place.

Mine

Awesome to see this. We might have true development after all.

I hope we can get the rom part of safestrap fixed! Great work

Wahhhh just when i oreo is released for the unlocked note 8. Haha guess i wont be taking oreo update anytime soon and may actually want to root dispite the 80% battery.
I really hope there are still developers that will cook roms or ports of internation version like dr ketans.
Thanks. Cant wait for ur rom portion of safestrap.

I can confirm this is legit guys. backups and restores work. For the moment full custom roms like lineage will not be possible. but ill be working on that

I'd love to see me some Darthstalker ROM's those were my favorite on the Note 5. I don't know if Jovy still makes ROM's though.

Best I can tell I can't Backup or access the external SDCard ... Only the internal
Is that the same for you guys?

---------- Post added at 12:31 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:23 AM ----------
I went back into safestrap recovery (for some reason my screenshot didn't save)
But when I tried to mount the microsd or external SDCard I got an error
Invalid argument ..... Blah blah can't mount ext sd

Im running a backup to my sdcard as i type this. Works perfectly. I am however not using the build in this thread. just my own.

Lets make it clear, jrkruse tested 16GB and 32GB ext-sd and it works on S8+, 64GB and above not working.
I have tested 16GB on my S8 and works.
What size is yours?

CONTRADUDE PRESENTS
CleverNameHere Rom Release 2 Beta 3
This rom is discontinued as I have moved on to the Nexus 7. God Bless, everyone!
This ROM is based off of the Evo View 4G's 3rd OTA (Honeycomb update) and was created with DSIXDA's rom kitchen. Special thanks to pardonmyfreedom for figuring out the view's mount points, Globatron for S-off, lovethyevo for great advice and assistance with kernel building and Zepplinrox for V6 SuperCharger
Features
Rooted
Busybox
Deodexed
Zipaligned on boot
Ad Free Hosts file added
Bash shell & nano installed along with sysro/sysrw scripts
Added custom boot animation (found about 4th hand, will give credit when I can find original owner) and switched the shutdown animation to the stock HTC one
Filesystem Tweaks
V6 Supercharger setting is baked in the /data folder, 1000hp settings enabled with Nitro Lag Nullifier More information here
Removed most of the bloatware, I'd love feedback if this isn't enough though
Disabled HTC update checking
baked in Facebook & Facebook messenger, google+, google voice, ES file explorer, Titanium Backup & Mybackup Root, Onlive Client, Boat Browser, Script Manager and XDA forum browser
Enabled bluetooth headset support, haven't tested it but it saw my jawbone and paired with it.
Please help me test this rom while I'm continuing to add features as well as offer suggestions for improvements. I already have a few in mind as well, just need to continue working through them. I'm also looking for anyone who has theming experience since I'm an IT guy and not a graphics designer ;-)

Coming soon, after my vacation
Pre-Installation Instructions
Make sure your HTC Evo View 4G is S-off and has a recovery installed, the best way to do that is to follow this guide by Globatron for S-off Gingerbread. After you have completed that process follow this guide to bring yourself to Honeycomb. You must upgrade to Honeycomb in this way to be able to use my Rom. Finally, You also need to have an SD Card in your view in order to be able to flash things through ClockworkMod.
Installation Instructions
The betas of this ROM will wipe data, so I recommend backing up important information in MyBackup Root and Titanium Backup. The Full Releases (RLS 1, RLS 2, etc.) and Release Candidates (RC1, Etc.) will not wipe data, but if you're coming from stock or just want to make sure your devices is clean, do a factory reset from within clockworkmod recovery between steps 3 and 4 of the guide below.
Copy the Rom .zip file to the base of your SD Card, not the internal storage of your View
Boot into your tablet's bootloader by holding volume down & power while unit is powered off
select recovery by using the volume arrows and hit power to select
you should now be looking at a black screen with blue text, if not make sure you followed the S-off guide. using the volume keys to navigate and power button to select, select install zip from sd card using power
select choose zip from sdcard
select the clevernamehere .zip file on your sdcard
navigate down to the option that says 'Yes - Install clevernamehere*.zip' where * is the name of the version of the rom (eg. beta1)
Rom will now install and run it's course. The script will be more verbose then it is now by the final version
select the +++++Go Back+++++ option
now select reboot system now and the view will reboot. this will take a while, just like it did when you took it out of the box.
Rom is now installed and working! let me know if you find any bugs or have feature requests.
Removing all user data before installing a new rom (Factory Data Reset)
Boot into your tablet's bootloader by holding volume down & power while unit is powered off
select recovery by using the volume arrows and hit power to select
you should now be looking at a black screen with blue text, if not make sure you followed the S-off guide. using the volume keys to navigate and power button to select, select wipe data/factory reset.
navigate down to the option that says 'Yes -- delete all user data' and select it. This will wipe ALL of your data and the data will be unrecoverable after this unless you have backed it up using Titanium Backup and Mybackup Root.
device will now wipe itself and take you back to the main clockworkmod menu. continue on from step 4 of the above guide to flash the rom if you already have the .zip on your device.
Uninstallation Instructions (going back to stock)
waiting for an RUU for now. Strongly recommend NANDROIDing your stock rooted image before flashing regardless.
otherwise use this tool to return to stock or gingerbread. works well (I've tested it once) and it was created in conjunction with globatron

I had to take the same shortcut he did on voicesearch. not totally happy with it, but no matter what method I tried to deodex it, it always failed.

Honestly, its not a big deal if you just drop it from /system completely. Its not that hard to get into the market.
I loved your GB rom and I am looking forward to this one. I was getting ready to do a data wipe then I saw your post so it saves me from doing an extra one. I will just for your rom.
cool cant wait for this one.
Thanks for the update. Sorry to hear you have to work today.
*this space for rent*
Can't wait to see the rom, contra.

This post will shortly contain information and links to my honeycomb ROM. Took too long to finish alpha testing it before work today. I'll have a beta 1 posted hopefully on lunch today, but it's pretty rough. deodexed/zipalign/init.d scripts/root basically. it seems to hesitate less to me, but it could be placebo ;-). it's uploading to multiupload now, but will take longer than I have left to complete.

so is the is a rooted version of Honeycomb ?? that can be flashed without using the Fastboot method ??
if you are referring to my rom, yes it can be flashed normally in clockworkmod recovery but the betas of my rom always wipe data when they are flashed. backup your data in tibu and mybackup first.
Just found out the free xda app works properly on honeycomb. Going to bake it in next release.
Contradude,
Any extra features you implemented or plan to implement?
I tell you right now, the most digusting (for me ) in HC is "no more hardware buttons".
New software-only buttons take away precious screen space on 7" and make watching full screen video impossible.
Dell Streak has a patch to turn hardware buttons on and off. Maybe we can get it on the View as well.
My dream feature would be USB host.
Thanks.
I am staying away from HC for now.
Actually MX Video goes full screen and the software buttons are hidden... Great program!
So if I have read everything correctly if we do this we can't get back to GB at the moment. Is that correct.

That's good to know.
However, Sling, Vulkano and Daroon (the only player for the DVDs) can not do it.
DLing now, will test and post quadrant score, and test all radios (4G too), and everything else.
@contra I posted which bloatware apps I removed with no issue here
Also, looking forward to being able to auto-hide the notification bar and re-enable the HW buttons.
There is an app called Honeybar that hides the notification bar but it's a paid app $1, also there is one called Hidebar I tried, but in order to get the notification bar back up you're supposed to touch the screen in certain parts and no matter where I touched it didn't bring the bar back up so I don't think it's compatible with our tablet just yet. Oh and that last one is free btw. I'll try to find it, post a link, and contact the developer to add support for the View/Flyer.
Thats what I thought. I will wait. Love the name by the way "maine coon". I have a black maine coon cat asleep in my lap as I type this. Thanks for the quick reply.
Will be peeping out, I just got back home from a trip nicely down..
I will follow up with Lee regarding the HC hardkeys mod that we got connected with TheManii..

[ROOT/ROM/DEV] Korean Galaxy Note Development and Support sharing

Read First: Thread created ONLY for Korean Galaxy Note (SHV-E160 S/K/L ver) users. ROOT, ROM or any developments posted here cannot be used for N7000 or I717 Galaxy note ver.
I am not responsible if you damaged or bricked your phone!! Use at your own risk!! I do not own nor created the developments posted here.
I created this thread to post the developments and support for our beloved Korean Galaxy Note as well as to compile the tutorials inside and outside XDA all in 1 thread.
Note: If you decide to share a recent development here, please specify/tag if applicable to all SHV models or specific model only (e.g, [e160 s/k/l] or [e160 S only]).
Basic Commands/terms:
1.)Download mode: Turn off the phone. When it’s completely turned off press [Volume down (-) + Home + Power]. Once you see the Korean text press Volume up (+).
2.) Recovery mode: Turn off the phone. When it’s completely turned off press [Volume up (+) + Volume down (-) + Home + Power]. You should see the recovery mode at the top of your LCD screen (either tegrak or clockworkmod recovery). To navigate, press Volume up or down and use the power button as your “enter/ok” button.
3.) ROOT – gaining admin access to your phone.
4.) Root File: Some were mislead by searching for a folder named “root”. “Root” is equivalent to /sdcard (not external sdcard or a folder named “root”). So when the instruction tells you to put a specific file to the root it means that you put it inside the /sdcard.
5.) Flash – the term “flash” in android’s world means “transfer”. When a guide tells you to “flash” partition, it implies that you transfer the contents to a partition (such as system, cache, data, boot, recovery etc…). There are different kinds of data you can flash such as recovery, rom, kernel etc. this can be done by using your PC/Laptop using ODIN for PC or Heimdall for mac or ROM Manager.
3.) Checking your Korean Galaxy note version- Korean galaxy notes have different versions and it depends with the Korean carrier. To check if you have either S/K/L go to settings > About phone. Also note your basedband version (UI24, UH24, F09 etc….).
Developments:
1.) Successful debrick of Korean Galaxy note. Thanks to darkspr1te and to the contributors. You can find his page here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1914359&page=10).
2.) ROOT- Before rooting your phone make sure you have upgraded to ICS 4.0.4. You can download Kies here (http://www.samsung.com/us/kies/) to upgrade or do it via phone by going to settings>about phone>system updates>check updates. Make sure your phone battery is at least over 50% . If you’re using a laptop, make sure the battery life is full or better plug it in. Don’t use a cheap cable. Please use the one you got from Samsung.
a) [e160 s/k/l] Root instructions by jairrab: (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1924535) I used this one to root my phone because it's easy to follow especially for root virgins. However, the instructions does not include the Clockworkmod recovery (CWM) installation. Hence, do this AFTER successfully installing the Tegrak Recovery:
I.) Download CWM Recovery (v6.0.1) cwm.tar here (https://www.dropbox.com/s/cyitd4ce3jq0zb4/cwm.tar)
II.) Put the downloaded file to the root of the phone (/sdcard)
III.) Follow the same method you used when you installed the Tegrak Recovery.
b) [e160L only] Root instructions by mycatisether: (http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1775015) found some useful info here (removing sms limit etc…) that are applicable to all Korean GN models.
3.) Post ROOT developments:
a.)BACK UP! After rooting your phone I advised that you do a NANDROID back up first (requiment: CWM recovery see 2.a in development section). It is a complete back-up of your phone. So anytime you can go back to your phone’s last condition. Do the following to make a nandroid back up using the CWM recovery.
I.) Flash CWM recovery
II.) Go to recovery mode
III.) Navigate using volume up or volume down and select “back up and restore” press power key to enter.
IV.) You should be in back up menu now. Navigate and select back up and hit the power button again. This will take awhile. Be patient.
V.) Once the back-up is done, navigate to “reboot system now” and hit the power button.
VI.) After reboot. Go to /sdcard and copy the clockworkmod folder to a safe place.
b.) Custom ROM:1.) [e160 s/k/l] CM9 Stable – Requirements: Rooted phone with CWM recovery (see 2.a under development section above)1.a) Download the following files and put inside the root (do not unzip)
CM9 ROM (https://www.dropbox.com/s/aaz0k19ddz0xytz/cm-9.1.0-quincyskt-KUKJIN-RC2.1.zip)
Front camera fix (https://www.dropbox.com/s/zqcjeegm6wn8vk2/old_note_front-cam_RC2.1.zip)
Google App for CM9 (https://www.dropbox.com/s/65703m0trd38gii/gapps.zip)
1.b) After copying the files in the root go to recovery mode (how to go to recovery mode? Read above).
1.c) In recovery mode select > “wipe data/factory reset” and select yes. > select “wipe cache partition” and select yes. > select advance > wipe dalvik and select yes.
1.d) After step 1.c STAY IN RECOVERY MODE and install the files you downloaded IN ORDER. Go to > “install zip from SD card” > 1st install CM9 ROM (cm-9.1.0-quincyskt-KUKJIN-RC2.1.zip) > 2nd install camera fix (old_note_front-cam_RC2.1.zip) > lastly, install Google app (gapps.zip).
1.e) Reboot and enjoy! Do not install the Korean keyboard! Or you can just uninstall it.
I personally use this CM9 ROM and it runs perfectly! I have no issues with the sms, battery, camera etc… All Korean bloatwares gone. No Korean keypad. Can send over 1000+ characters.
I really recommend the “Cobalt” theme as it made the CM9 even more smoother and you can download it here for free (https://play.google.com/store/apps/...h_result&rdid=com.dustinb.theme.cobalt&rdot=1) then go to settings>themes>select cobalt (ignore the message does not contain assets etc…).
If your SMS limit is not fixed. Download GO SMS Pro or Handcent SMS in google play store. Use it as your main messaging app. It will solve the problem.
Some have issues with their touchscreens. To solve this you can go to dialer and dial >*#2663# (no need to press the call button). Click “Touch key FW update” then reboot.
2.) Other ROMs – with some research and the help of the Koreans, Chinese and Vietnamese I was able to locate the following ROMs. Please note that I have not tested these ROMs, as such I cannot guarantee if they are working properly (however, darkspr1te told us the he will test some ROMs and provide feedback – just to prevent hard/soft brick). Some ROMs I found have instructions, some do not have. I’ll post my source and you can just use google translate and read the instructions from Koreans, Chinese and Vietnamese websites. PLEASE TAKE NOTE OF THE TAGGING I MADE. (E.G., IF IT's TAGGED WITH [S/K/L] IT MEANS IT’S COMPATIBLE TO ANY KOREAN GN (SHV E160]. IF IT'S TAGGED WITH [L ONLY], IT MEANS IT’S ONLY APPLICABLE TO E160L GN VER. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!
a) [S/K/L] MIUI 2.8.3 Beta (http://pan.baidu.com/share/link?shareid=80764&uk=2063664816) – known 4G and battery problems. Translated source here (http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=auto&tl=en&u=http://search.matcl.com/b/imbeded/125842).

d) [S/K/L] Alpha1 ROM based on the stable CM9 above. I did not test it. Seems like icons were changed etc… You can download the ROM here ( still uploading to dropbox). See the translated original post here (http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=auto&tl=en&u=http://search.matcl.com/b/imbeded/126864) . MORE TO COME... I will update the thread later.
I find the CM9 the best-cooked ROM for our SHVs to date. All issues were resolved in this ROM.

Issues with cm9:
Engineer mode cannot be activated using the cm9 dialer.
No S settings support. so no s-memo or any s-app. but you can still use your s-pen. Use SMBX for drawings.
No gesture support.
S-Pen writing hand solution for CM9>>> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1860384
Cm9 does not support S-pen apps and S-pen calibration. But it can still detect the pen.
However we have better alternatives and I personally use them even when I was still in touchwiz.
1.) SBMX - One of the best canvas app for galaxy note. (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ngarside.memo&hl=en)
2.) Memo - Much like the S-app but better (you can crop picts, map, etc..) (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ngarside.memo&hl=en).
3.) Papyrus - Much like an S-note.
for gestures download >>> GMD Gesture Control Lite - you get more gesture with this app compared to touchwiz gestures. (https://play.google.com/store/apps/...nb29kbW9vZGRyb2lkLmdlc3R1cmVjb250cm9sZGVtbyJd)
I personally find the alternatives better than the s-apps..... But really... I miss the double tap quick note of touchwiz.
Android 4.2 Keyboard working on CM9.
Download and follow instructions from here > http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1965999
swype thing is pretty cool.
Another Cm9 issue I noticed:
Installation failed for apps purchased from Google playstore. Only for apps that automatically install itself in the internal storage SD card. No problem for other apps that automatically install in internal storage.
Solution: unmount the external SD card and internal SD card then download and install the app from playstore. Once installed, mount the SD cards back and just transfer the app from internal storage to SD card.

USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!

d) [S/K/L] Alpha1 ROM based on the stable CM9 above.
All issues were resolved in this ROM.
d.) Recommended apps for rooted phones (just search in google playstore): 1.) Battery Calibration (free)
2.) Titanium Backup (free or Pro)
3.) ROM Toolbox
4.) SD Maid
5.) Superuser or SuperSU
6.) Internet booster (really working for me)

2.) http://www.koxda.com/ (very informative but hard to get access for downloadable files.)
3.) http://matcl.com/ (Korean Website. Most of the cooked ROMs came from this website including the CM9. No CM10 update for now.)
4.) http://www.tinhte.vn (Very informative Vietnamese forum with lots of ROM links)
5.) http://www.115.com (This is a download site. Use the search toolbar to search for something and if you are lucky you may find yourself a treasure)
QUICK FIX:
1.) SMS Limit:
a.) Download GO SMS PRO or Handcent SMS. Make it your default sms app.
b.) They have other solution here (may not work to some KGN) (http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1775015)
2.) Removed U+ LTE boot and shutdown animations go here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1702580).

Hi dycz21,
First of all i appreciate your work for bringing out CM 9 ROM for our beloved E160S/L/K.
I've been waiting for this for a long time.
Gonna install it tonight.
As you have already installed this ROM, are there any other major issues other than S pen settings?
Anyways thanks again.

Installing apps from Playstore always failed for apps that automatically install in SD Card. Solution is unmount the sd card(internal and external) then install the app from Playstore. Then mount back the SD cards after the app has been installed in phone memory. No problem for Playstore apps that automatically install in phone memory.
I tried to move some apps from phone memory to SD card but its not working (using apps2SD). Will try to find the solution.
S-Pen is still recognized we just dont have the s-pen settings and s touchwiz apps.
Im happy with the cm9 ROM. its fast as compared to touchwiz.
By the way, before installing make sure to back up your contacts, messages, viper and whatsapp messages and your APN settings. Also do a NAND back up. You need to set your APN manually after installing the cm9.

Hi dycz21,
You mean that there is no problem if i'm installing directly to internal storage. the problem is there only if i install directly to external sd card.
Please correct me if i'm wrong

My understanding: When you go to "settings" > "storage" you will see your storage is divided into 3 sections: (1) Internal storage (phone memory)/ (2) Internal storage (sd card) / (3) sd card (external storage). If you download from Playstore some apps automatically install in storage #1 (phone memory). For this we have no problem. For apps that directly install in storage #2, this we have the problem. Installation will fail for this apps. Solution is unmount storage #2 and #3 then start to download from playstore and install. The app will be forced to install in the phone memory and installation is successful.
So after you installed the app and decided to move the app to storage #2 or #3 you will encounter a new problem. Moving the app to #2 and #3 will always fail. I am still trying to figure out a solution. I think the chinese already sorted this issues but I dont have access to their website to download the files. Hopefully darkspr1te can help us as he have access to the website. I am still waiting for the koreans to post the solution.

[RECOVERY LOCKED] Safestrap Recovery v3.75 [2014-06-29 KK B03]

ATTENTION: I will be stopping official Safestrap support on 9/1/2014. For more information please see:
https://plus.google.com/111109372727398356624/posts/AtoJ3xLj35b
*** DISCLAIMER ***
I work on projects that may brick your device. Don't sue me, hate me or try and kill my dog if that happens. I will feel bad the community will feel bad and hopefully we'll find a way to get you going again. But, the very nature of my projects involves a certain amount of risk taken by YOU. And by using the projects that I work on, you've accepted that fact.
THERE IS AN UNKNOWN ISSUE WHERE IF YOU HAVE ENCRYPTION ENABLED AND INSTALL SS IT BOOTLOOPS. IF YOU FIT THIS DESCRIPTION PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM SAFESTRAP FOR NOW.
AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Safestrap
CURRENT PROJECT STATUS:
STABLE v3.71 (JB) / BETA v3.75 (NC2/KK)
WHAT IS SAFESTRAP?
Safestrap is a Bootstrap / Recovery for locked bootloader phones. The goal is to avoid touching your primary system (I'll call this "stock" system) and only flash or make large changes to another place on your phone that Safestrap treats as a "2nd system" (in this case, it's a series of virtual ROM slots located on the internal emmc area: "/sdcard"). Once installed, you will see a "Splashscreen" giving you the option to hit "menu" to enter recovery. The recovery portion of Safestrap is now based on TWRP 2.7.1.x (a touch based recovery) and you can perform .zip installs, backups and restores here. The additional features I've added to TWRP are mostly located under the "Boot Options" menu:
Here you can create virtual ROM-slots (2 on the N3 due to partition size and internal space) for flashing ROMs. These ROM-slots allow for different sizes of /system, /data and /cache partitions. The defaults *SHOULD* be good enough for flashing the stock-based ROMs.
NOTE: The bigger you make these partition the less room you will have to make other ROM-slots.
For more information you can read up here:
http://blog.hash-of-codes.com/how-to-safestrap/
HOW DO I INSTALL SAFESTRAP?
Requirement: Root
[NEW FOR v3.72+ KK Safestrap] Requirement: busybox. If your stock ROM doesn't have it built-in you need to grab "Busybox" from the Play Store and run the installer.
Requirement: Allow APK install from Unknown Sources
Download the Safestrap APK
Find the APK using a Filemanager tool and open it on your device, then click "Install".
(If updating from an existing Safestrap you might be warned that this will over-write the existing installation. Click the "Yes" equivalent to this message.)
Once installed, open up the Safestrap application as you would any other app.
Agree to the disclaimer that you won't try to sue me and hunt me down with a rifle if you manage to break your phone..
That's it for the installation! Read below for a brief overview of Safestrap Recovery v3.x
INSTALL VIDEO by DMX (For VZW Device): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_RZIyeUMK-Y&feature=youtube_gdata_player
Push the APK up to your sdcard.
Boot back into the "stock" rom-slot.
[NEW 2013-12-19]Go into your old Safestrap app and use the "Uninstall Recovery" button
THEN, open a "file explorer" of some sort (even TW "My Files" will work)
Browse to where you pushed the APK
Click on it and install like normal
Once installed, open the APK
Grant SU access
Use the "Install Recovery" button
All set, now you can reboot and re-activate whatever rom-slot you were using
KNOWN ISSUES:
[v3.75] If you install Safestrap on a rom-slot it will show "not installed". *DO NOT INSTALL SAFESTRAP ON A ROM-SLOT*
[v3.72] Sometimes the installation doesn't work correctly. If you don't see the splashscreen after a rebooting. Install Safestrap again. (DEBUGGING THIS AS I GET TIME)
[v3.72] If you installed the custom-safestrap APK by @drakeymcmb please use "Uninstall Recovery" and then uninstall that APK before installing a new one. They have different signatures and you will end up with 2 Safestraps and 2 hijacks.. which is very NOT good.
[v3.72] Busybox is now required for the Safestrap APK to work correctly
[v3.72] ROM-SLOTs aren't supported yet
[v3.72] "Reboot Recovery" doesn't work in the APK
If you don't see files on "Micro SDcard" for some reason try tapping that area and swapping to "Internal Storage" and then back again.
No Aroma installer support. This is due to the stock Note 3 kernel framebuffer. To build a recovery which worked, it needed QCOM patches. So will Aroma.
If you try a .zip file with an Aroma installer, it will most likely just hang.
If you use the "4way reboot" mod, then "Reboot Recovery" button in the Safestrap APK won't work correctly.
NEW TO v3.75:
TWRP 2.7.1.x update for the base recovery.
ROM-SLOTs now have a 16gb size limit (vs 4gb previously) [THEY DON'T WORK YET IN KK THO SO BE PATIENT]
DOWNLOADS:

As of version 3.75, Safestrap Recovery is now based on TWRP 2.7.1.x. For more on TWRP you can visit their website: http://www.teamw.in/
WARNING: Safestrap is heavily modified to be "Safe" for your device.
For the purposes of direct user testing I've established a channel on freenode.net IRC: #safestrap
I'm in the channel mostly all the time, but may not be active for discussion.

I have System Push fc come up and the Hangouts started fc also. i was on the Dirty Flash option we have had running TMO Jedi...i think that is causing problems, I am going to Restore back to fresh MI9 root de la vega and start from scratch.
Edit:
I ran OnceClickBin in DL Mode and went to reboot to continue THEN the full SS Recovery activated. So i continued reboot into system hangouts and other FCs stopped but still wont reboot from SS App...going to Odin stock. report back

Inside recovery you can use sd card for backup / restore.
To change location by pressing on the storage button.
For rom-slots they stay on the internal storage only at this time.

[FIX] FED-Patcher v7 (ForceEncrypt Disable Patcher)

Hello everybody,
I created a tool - initially for the nexus 9 (flounder|flounder_lte) - that gets rid of the ForceEncrypt flag in a generic way (meaning it should work no matter what rom you are on). It does that by patching the currently installed boot.img.
I enhanced that tool to make it work for nexus 6 (shamu) too.
Background
The Android CDD (Compatibility Definition Document) suggests that all devices SHOULD enable full disk-encryption (FDE) by default. Even though I support every step towards more security I have to criticize this approach. FDE comes at a price. Encryption takes time because some component has to de- and encrypt the stuff on the disk at some point and in the case of the nexus 6 (aka shamu) it's the CPU's task. Even though the nexus 6's CPU has 4 quite fast cores you can still easily feel the difference between FDE in the on- or off-state. The I/O is faster and boot-times take only half as long. (I did not do any measurements)
There is an ongoing discussion about this topic in cyanogenmod's gerrit for the nexus 9. Although it's a fun read it is pretty clear that this exchange of views is not going anywhere near a useful outcome.
Because performance is important to me and my tablet does not need the extra security I created the FED-Patcher (ForceEncrypt Disable Patcher)
How does it work?
FED-Patcher is a simple flashable ZIP that is supposed to be run in a recovery that has busybox integrated (like TWRP or CWM). This is what it does:
Checks if your device is compatible
Dumps the currently installed boot.img.
Unpacks the dump of your currently installed boot.img. The unpacking process is done via a self-compiled, statically linked version of unmkbootimg.
It patches the filesystem tables which include the force-encrypt flags. This process will change "forceencrypt" to "encryptable".
Then it patches the filesystem tables to not use dm-verity. This is done by removing the "verify" mount-parameter.
Creates a new boot.img. The unpacking process is done via a self-compiled, statically linked version of mkbootimg.
Flashes the modified boot.img
Supported devices
HTC Nexus 9 WiFi (flounder)
HTC Nexus 9 LTE (flounder_lte)
Motorola Nexus 6 (shamu)
Version History
v1 - Initial version with HTC Nexus 9 WiFi (flounder) support
v2 - Added Motorola Nexus 6 (shamu) support
v3 - Added support for HTC Nexus 9 LTE (flounder_lte)
v4 - Added support for signed boot-images
v5 - Changed error handling to compensate for missing fstab files. Some roms seem not to ship with the complete set of boot-files from AOSP.
v6 - FED-Patcher will enforce the same structure for the patched boot.img that the original boot.img had. Additionally, the kernel commandline will also be taken over. This should fix pretty much every case where devices would not boot after patching.
v7 - FED-Patcher will now disable dm-verity in fstab to get rid of the red error sign on marshmallow roms.
What do I need to make this work?
A supported device (Your nexus 6)
An unlocked bootloader
An already installed ROM with forceencrypt flag. (like cyanogenmod CM12.1)
A recovery that includes busybox (TWRP, CWM)
How do I use it?
Make a thorough, conservative backup of your data if there is any on your device
Go into your recovery (TWRP, CWM)
Flash fed_patcher-signed.zip
If your device is already encrypted (You booted your ROM at least once) you need to do a full wipe to get rid of the encryption. This full wipe will clear all your data on your data-partition (where your apps as well as their settings are stored) as well as on your internal storage so please, do a backup before. If you don't do a backup and want to restore your data... well... Call obama.
How do I know if it worked?
Go into your "Settings"-App. In "Security", if it offers you to encrypt your device it is unencrypted. If it says something like "Device is encrypted" it indeed is encrypted.
IMPORTANT: If you update your ROM you have to run FED-Patcher again because ROM-updates also update the boot-partition which effectively removes my patch. So, if you are on CM12.1 for example and you used my patch and do an update to a newer nightly you have to run FED-Patcher again. If you don't do so Android will encrypt your device at the first boot.
Is it dangerous?
Well, I implemented tons of checks that prevent pretty much anything bad from happening. But, of course, we're dealing with the boot-partition here. Even though I tested FED-Patcher quite a lot there is still room for crap hitting the fan.

* pbatard for making (un)mkbootimg (dunno if he is on xda)
* @rovo89 for his xposed framework - I used some of his ideas by reading the source of his xposed installer flashable ZIP for FED-Patcher.
Thank you for this!
I can easily extend support for more devices. Do you guys know of some that have forceencrypt enabled?
Excellent work.
Hello everybody,
I just released version 6!
In this release, FED-Patcher will enforce the same structure for the patched boot.img that the original boot.img had. Additionally, the kernel commandline will also be taken over. This should fix pretty much every case where devices would not boot after patching.
Enjoy
Edit: Confirmed as working for latest Chroma build. (9/18)
Can anyone confirm this working for Chroma? Truly don't want to deal with starting from scratch ...
Hello everybody,
just to let you guys know - I just checked the new marshmallow factory image for shamu (MRA58K) => FED-Patcher should work for this new image too.
Enjoy!
This worked perfect for me just flashed then formatted data and boom I'm unencrypted again thank you op
Hello everybody,
I just released v7!
FED-Patcher will now disable dm-verity in fstab to get rid of the red error sign on marshmallow roms.

This is incredible news! Using this alongside SuperSU, is R/W access accessible on the system partition? (build.prop mods)

Yes that should work!
//EDIT: No it does not. It keeps looping after installing SuperSU with the following error:
Code:
avc: denied { execute_no_trans } for path="/system/xbin/daemonsu" dev="mmcblk0p29" ino=104419 scontext=u:r:init:s0 tcontext=u:object_r:system_file:s0 tclass=file permissive=0
Probably some selinux problem :/. I might dive into this later this week. Sorry.
//EDIT #2: Now that I think about it... Doesn't the SuperSU flashable ZIP take care of the needed policy rules so the error that I posted above does not happen? IMHO it is SuperSU's task to take care of these things.
I might have to retest with the actual SuperSU installer. I had used TWRP's SuperSU installer. Maybe that one is broken somehow...
//EDIT #3: Nope! Supersu definitely does not work. I just tried with BETA-SuperSU-v2.50.zip. The SELinux policy-set that comes with the stock marshmallow factory images lacks the necessary rules to enable SuperSU to work.
However, adding these rules is something FED-Patcher was not designed to do. IMHO the SuperSU flashable ZIP should take care of this.

Thanks, I just fixed it. Shame on me.
Thanks for your work. Please can you take moment to answer my question? I am using an Android 6 ROM, however, due to my original configuration, device encryption is active.
I will try as listed below, please critique, I am not sure if I need to wipe the phone after backing up?
1. Back up device
2. Wipe device (data, internal storage and system.)
3. Flash FED patcher
4. Flash suitable Andriod 6 boot loader and radio
5. Flash suitable rom (with encryption disabled)
Thanks

Hi @finesse,
FED patcher must be run after installing a rom in order to disable the forced encryption flag. If the rom does not have forced encryption enabled (pretty common on non-stock and non-cm12.1 roms) you do not need to run FED patcher at all. Background: What FED-Patcher does is that it just takes the boot-partition of the currently installed rom and modifies it.
Wiping (in TWRP: "Wipe" - "Factory reset") is essential after backing up if the phone is currently encrypted. Sadly, you cannot simply just disable the encryption. Only formatting the partition (=wiping) will get rid of it.
I hope I could help .
Hey everybody!
This project has been moved to HERE! Please post your problems, success stories and so on there from now on.
Cheers, gladiac
Will this work on anyother device having Marshmallow... Its a MY6753 device.
or any way to edit you patch and make it work on my device....

Rawdealer, I got it to work lol. Just seemed odd that you had to Format Data instead of doing a full wipe of everything. I'm guessing the Format Data just had to occur after CM was installed.

rewrite the instructions in both threads:
flash FED-Patcher.zip
use the Format Data button!!! neither Swipe to Factory Reset! nor Advanced Wipe!
v8 works well for nexus 6 stock 7.1.1, thanks to the op @gladiac and the discoverer @rawdealer, would better someone quote this in the other thread since New members (those with few posts) are not permitted to post to development-related forums
Bump
Thanks for this.
Does FED-Patcher still not work with Nougat?
I tried to use the detailed instructions here:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/general/how-to-disable-force-encryption-nexus-6-t3220273
I am not a pro at any of this, including TWRP.
I downloaded the Factory Image from Google (7.1.1 July for Shamu , Nexus 6)
https://dl.google.com/dl/android/aosp/shamu-n6f27h-factory-718e138f.zip?hl=vi
I unlocked and rooted my N6, flashed TWRP.
I followed all the instructions. When I got to step 8: Flash your ROM, it wouldn't work. I kept getting Zip verification errors in TWRP. I also tried to do it in NRT.
I was told that you can't install a Google factory image via TWRP. I guess the factory image would overwrite the recovery with stock. (my guess)
And when I used NRT, I got a hash mismatch when I tried to flash the factory image it as a ZIP.
NRT would only install the factory image via "Flash Stock and Unroot" which I guess defeats the purpose of this.
So I can go back to those instructions but am unclear which Android ROM to flash at step 8.

important information about data/media partition. Android is based off linux.when you back up data it is not the same as internal storage. When you cut and paste a file folder it can't be cut and paste within it's own folder it will give you an error operation not allowed. So is this fact with the twrp recovery because you are given two back up paths. Either it's internal storage or micro sd. In order to have both partitions as paths data being backup is the data of apps that came with the phone and other apps downloaded when you sign in your respectable accounts. so when you restore boot system data your phone will bootup as it was before the backup. The team win recovery project are discussing possible solutions so i am making it clear if you wipe internal storage all contents saved will and i repeat it will be deleted. Data restore does not recover internal storage wiped in advance wipe GUI .thanks for your time and support.

What's Up...
I've not posted on XDA in a long time.. Had a Note 4 running the Echoe ROM from friedrich that was perfection from Dec 15' until just recently.. And I would still be there if my Note 4 had not Crashed & Burned.. ( Overheating ) and not booting unless it spent time in the freezer..
I ran across this GEM at Walmart for $49.88... Let me repeat that..
$49.88..
Outside of only having the budget phone amount of Internal Storage ( 8G's )
this is One Hell Of A Device.. :good:
I did not even think I would be able to have Root.. Much less T.W.R.P...
That means Xposed.. and, for me that's all I need to polish this $50.00 Gem into a Diamond..
Thanks Man.. for Sticking With It.
We'll get a ROM at some point.. This phone is now at least crawling.. It will be running in no time..

Your Welcome.. :good:
Wow.. AOSP huh... How Cool Is That!
I'm a little slow.. and it's been 2 years since I unlocked a Bootloader using ADB-Flash.. and at first I could not get into TWRP.. I would do the key-combo, but it would just boot back to the normal startup..
I then ran across someone's post stating you have to give the command in ADB.. once I did that.... success! at least for my device. I just wanted to mention that in case someone else was as rusty as me and forgot to complete the process..

Is "Twrp_M1_SdX_V1.img" your latest twrp image? (its dated today so that's why I ask), or should we still be downloading v4 as you recommended before? I am trying to prepare to root my brothers LGMS330 so that I can debloat it and try and get it to run better. 90% of the stock apps he is not using but they wont let me uninstall them, so I need to root, unlock, twrp, SuperSU, debloat, Install Nova, in that order and then only the few apps he does care about, camera, talkatone, Hangouts dialer for GV, Facebook, Chrome and a few others.
I can figure out the rest, just need to know what your latest twrp image is to try please. By the way, what does the SDX mean in your last image name? Thanks bud... :good:
