Prevent initial reset after SIM insertion (CSC change) - Samsung Galaxy S9+ Questions & Answers

Hi there!
Im happy about my new S9+ (international DUOS variant available in germany), im just about to set everything up. Now, to keep my old phone as long as possible, i have not inserted my german T-Mobile SIM yet but already customized a lot on my S9+.
Now i've read here at XDA that the first time you insert a SIM into the device it will trigger a reset, no matter what you do and all my setup and customisation work will be lost for good...
Is there any way to prevent this hard reset?
I read about this method for a Samsung J3 smartphone:
1. Ensure you have set a PIN on the phone.
2. Shut it down, remove battery, insert SIM.
3. Start it up, wait till it gets to the initial lock screen. Do not enter the PIN.
4. Force the phone to shut down again..
5. Power it up again. After entering the PIN, the SIM should be detected and join the cell network, with no "security" reboot and factory wipe.
Can anyone confirm this?
Otherwise i would use the Samsung Cloud Backup to restore my settings later, hopefully this samsung backup is working...
Any other ideas? Thank you!

Ok people, i have tried the procedure i have mentioned above and my phone did not reset itself. It was the first time i have inserted a SIM, so this may actually work. But remember, i dont have a SIM-locked or branded phone, maybe those behave different.
On the other hand i cannot confirm that it would have done this reset in the first place if i just put in the SIM.
So i can only tell you to try out this method, it wont hurt your phone. And if it works it will save you a lot of time.

After half year use, NO SERVICE, NO SIGNAL BARS, but see the G Symbol

After around a half year of use,
today, the 13th of november afternoon, I lost my signal.
I can see the G symbol, but I cant see the bars for signal.
It says, no signal. I tried to change the band to gsm, I tried different radio roms, new mary rom v6, nothing helps. I even hard restarted the phone, without effect.
Can somebody help, advice? What went wrong?
If I search for networks, it finds all the UK networks.
Thanks a lot
Peter
SIM card still valid? No unpaid bills?
Have you tried another SIM card?
yes. the strange thing is, when I try to use the T-mobile sim, it works. if I try to use another o2 card, it doesnt. if I try to use my o2 card, which is not working in another mobile it is working..
like if o2 has blocked my phone, but not the sim. it is possible somehow?

My friend, I have no idea Try to flash everything again, CID unlock, hardspl, uspl, radio rom...
I tried new ROM - Mary, 2 radio roms and I did went across the unlocking process. what else can I do? what is cid unlocking?
thanks,
peter
I even tried to call o2, but they told me, as my mobile phone was bought on ebay, they can not check, if it is being blocked..
really silly.
and I am desperate..
Probably got a faulty SIM.
Some phones are locked to one provider's cards only. If you want to use another provider's SIM card, you'll need to unlock it. This is called CID unlock.
Locked phones will also not permit you to flash different ROMs - they stop at 99% and hang.
Since you can flash Mary ROM, then a likely cause is a faulty SIM card, or faulty SIM connector in the phone.
PS - make sure you use the appropriate radio for the appropriate ROM. Mary ROM cannot use radio higher than 1.64
OK. So the situation is as follows:
I have bought this phone on ebay and it was locked and branded to T-mobile. I unlocked it using the CID unlock code from this forum.
I put a new radio rom and about 2 ROMS. I was running the last rom for about 3 months. 2 days ago, all of a sudden, I lost my signal. The G symbol is still there and the phone does not say, the sim is not there, so I assume, that the contacts are ok. I tried other sims, 1 O2, and one TalkTalk. Both are not working. I tried a T-mobile sim and that is working. Is it possible, that T-mobile somehow relocked the phone remotely????
I tried to unlock it twice with the same procedure, but without success. What am I doing wrong? I am really desperate.
Thanks a lot,
Peter
It's unlikely that they could have relocked your phone remotely. I don't think that can even be done, as the "free" method of unlocking requieres patching parts of the flash, wich is not done "over the air".
But, they may have locked your phone, as if it was stolen, through IMEI. Is the seller on ebay still active? any compliants on his votes?
Anyway, for checking everything out...
Try this:
1. Go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=355730 and download "sspl-1.16-nike.zip" and "hardspl-1.15mfg-nike.zip"
Uncompress the ssp-1.16-nike.zip and copy it to the phone through activesync.
2. Run the program from the phone, it will show the tricolor screen.
3. Flash hardspl-1.15mfg-nike using customruu and wait until it reboots the phone.
4. Take the battery out, put it back in and press and hold camera and power button until it gets to the bootloader again (it should say hardspl 1.15 bla bla bla)
5. Download the unlocker from this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=395945
6. Download, for example, this modded radio (it doesn't specifically need this, but I had troubles with other radios, but none with this): http://www.4shared.com/file/52403515/681b77e5/RUU_Nike_Radio_1582123_25653004S_Modded.html
7. Flash that radio using customruu, and when the phone reboots take the battery out again, back in, and enter the bootloader again.
8. Now, go to step1 of the unlocker and flash the patched radio. Once it's done, the phone will reboot. Go back to the bootloader (battery out, in again, camera+power). Disable usb connection on activesync.
9. While in bootloader, take the usb cable out, wait some seconds, and put it back in.
10. Go to step2 of the unlocker and run it. If it needs more than 30 seconds to tell you that the phone is unlocked, something is possibly going wrong. In that case, disconnect it, take the battery out and in again, enter the bootloader again, pull in the usb cable, take it out, back in again, and retry step 2.
11. Once you get it unlocked, flash back the radio you downloaded before. Now it should be completely unlocked.
12. If it's not unlocked, the phone should say invalid sim when booting with another poviders' sim, but if it is, it should only ask for the pin and once enter, boot normally...
hope this helps!
PS: When you put the tmobile sim and gets signal.. does it let you call? only send sms? nothing at all? Normally, when a phone is blocked through imei, it can simply be rejected by the foreign network, or can stay connect but won't let you call, but let you send sms... could you check that also?
Hi!
Thanks for your post.
I have done everything again and nothing helped.
I went to T-Mobile, there they advice me to go to Vodafone and by vodafone I asked, if they can not check, if my phone was not blacklisted.
They put in the IMEI number and the system told me, that it WAS BLACLISTED
I called up the guy, which sold it to me from ebay He told me, he will check the number as well and he needs to go for another guy, which sold it to him and after that, he will give me hopefully the money back..
So, fingers cross and thanks for the help!
Peter

1. Shut down the phone, pull out the battery and the SIM card.
Check SIM card in another phone.
If the SIM card is corrupt, get a new one from your mobile provider.
If it is OK, put in into your phone again, put the battery in again and start the phone again.
2. If that does not help, try to toogle between flight mode on/off.
Wait some seconds to be sure that the phone really switched the mode.
3. If that does not help, have a look here (=> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1131950) to get a new modem/phone/baseband file, and flash it with Odin to your phone.
4. If that does not help either, you may have to flash a new ROM to your phone and do a factory reset.
For Official Firmwares have a look at Intratech's thread => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
There you will find everything you need and a description of how to flash.
Good luck !

[REQ/INFO] KDDI Au Samsung Galaxy S3 LTE [Model: SCL21]

Hello, I'm wondering if there is a guide or any info at all about rooting the KDDI's SGS3 LTE. I saw a bunch of thread for the NTT DoCoMo version but none about the KDDI version. No idea if they use the same hardware or not.
Root success by flashing CWM recovery and sgs3_rooting_supersu_v3.zip. Those tools are specified for Galaxy S3 NTT Docomo (SC-06D) but they also worked for Galaxy S3 Progre from AU KDDI (SCL21).
Just wondering how to unlock this SCL21, if anybody knows, please share.

I am also trying to find out a way to root my SCL21 but am having no luck. I have tried many of the "Universal 4.0.4 rooting methods" but have had no luck. Brong, would you mind sharing exactly what you did? The threads here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1999024 and here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1996940&page=2 warn about using the docomo method because it bricks the phone. Nothing seems to work with our model. Any help would be appriciated. Thanks.

Hi,
First step is flash the CWM recovery via Odin. You can download CWM recovery from here:
https://docs.google.com/folder/d/0B...ZhbUE/edit?docId=0B98X7HyfoaGaNzNvR052dUp0Wmc
Choose this file: SC06D-JB-KBC-CWM-V6.0.1.2_r10-recovery-odin.tar.md5
Flash that file in Odin, choose the PDA in Odin.
I assume you already know how to flash via Odin, if you dont know just ask me again or try to browse other thread.
Step two is run the CWM recovery. Also, I assume you already know to get into recovery mode. Make backup first in recovery mode, you need to insert external SD card and save the backup in the card.
Step three, download this file sgs3_rooting_supersu_v3.zip from here:
https://docs.google.com/folder/d/0B...ZhbUE/edit?docId=0B98X7HyfoaGaR21wdXZweDdYSXM and save it to the external SD card that you used before.
Step four, run the recovery mode again and choose install from SD card, then choose external sd card and choose the file you donwloaded (sgs3_rooting_supersu_v3.zip). After completing all, reboot your phone and you will see the Super User app. Make sure you download root checker in Play store so you can check whether the phone are rooted or not.
Note: If you run the recovery, the screen will reverse. Dont worry, it works eventhough the screen reverses.
Thats all. I am looking the way to unlock this phone, *#197328640# doesnt work. If you have a clue, please let me know.

I found a new thing regarding this phone. This phone doesn't support non LTE sim card, even you have micro sim (3G) card from AU KDDI. I am trying to find other LTE sim card from other carrier in order to check whether this phone works on that sim or not.
May be somebody can explain why this phone doesn't support non LTE sim. In case of Galaxy s3 LTE from NTT Docomo, it works when I used 3G sim (FOMA). I cut the 3G sim to fit the micro slot.

well, my purpose is/was to unlock this phone so I followed the samsung galaxy s3/note unlock method from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2014982
(I have/had this S3 Progre SCL21, the same phone in this thread)
I can access all the menu and procedure from that thread below, despite this phone being stock Android 4.04!
----------------
"Main Menu > [1] UMTS > [1] Debug Screen > [8] Phone Control > [6] Network Lock > Options [3]Perso SHA256 OFF > (after choosing this option, wait about 30 seconds, then go back one step by pressing the Menu button then select Back, now you are in [6] Network Lock then choose [4] NW Lock NV Data INITIALLIZ ..... wait for a minute then reboot your phone..."
---------------
I put 3G/2G sim card and the phone shows no service. I even put CDMA network sim, no luck. I don't know if this phone is unlocked. I'm wondering if this phone works only with LTE/4g sim. Right now, there's no 4G/LTE in my region
I assume the phone must support all other bands, if properly unlocked.
Now, I'm wandering through the threads and googling.
So far, I'm looking for Jelly Bean 4.1.1 for this phone, which doesn't seem to be available anywhere, even on samfirmware, only stock firmware
Root/flash CWM recovery and try some other unlock method from out there, (after making a backup Stock ROM and sensitive IMEI/NV data of course)
Please keep everyone updated and keep the spirit alive

Actually this phone, SCL21 can be used with LTE sim card only. I already tried to use non LTE sim card from KDDI AU with no luck.
What I am thinking is actually this phone maybe unlock-able by using the procedure as you mentioned (NW Lock NV Data INITIALLIZ). Since the phone can only be used with LTE sim card, we need to try LTE sim card from other carrier in order to test.
The problem is I dont have other carrier LTE sim card right now, if you have you can try it.
Update: Also I am wondering how to make this phone works with not only LTE/4G but also with 3G/CDMA. I changed the band to automatic, but there is no luck. I think this phone is locked to be used only with LTE/4G sim card. So, if somebody knows how to deal with this matter (make the phone not only accepts LTE/4G sim card, but also 3G/CDMA sim card) please share with us here.

Hi everyone ^_^
I just got the SCL21 about two weeks ago. I think it's really strange that even on the Japanese forums, there is very little info on rooting this model. From everything I've found, some Japanese sites also both say it's OKAY to root using the Docomo SC-06D recovery and Superuser zip while others say that it's NOT safe to use that same method and it will result in a bricked phone. Really odd, conflicting messages I think.
What is even more strange is the apparent issue with the screen "reversing"? One of the Japanese sites literally said the screen becomes "upside down" after flashing the SC-06D recovery.
Brong, since you got the root to work successfully , could you please elaborate on the "reversing" of the screen? Is the image upside down and only during the recovery mode? Also, do you know if the root caused you to lose the "osaifu Keitai" touch feature?
Thanks a lot to Brong and everyone else helping out with this model phone!!

Status of SIM access
Hi,
I tested both a 3G micro SIM and a 4G LTE nano SIM from Softbank in this phone and neither card is recognized. The phone acts as though no SIM is inserted at all. (Complete with the "no smoking" symbol (circle with diagonal line through it) instead of a signal meter. I have confirmed that this phone is indeed sold already SIM unlocked from the factory as the MSL is 000000 just like the Verizon Galaxy S III which is also sold without a SIM lock. Additionally, KDDI lists the SCL21 and all other LTE phones they are selling since the debut last winter as being SIM unlocked devices.
According to some Japanese forums, they are suspecting that this phone has some type of hardware lock (hard locked?)... I contacted the only known person who was successful at using a 3rd party SIM on the Vietnamese Viettel GSM network as in a YouTube video. He wouldn't give me any details except that he must have the phone physically in his shop to modify it and it can't be done remotely. This individual also has screenshots showing the stock ROM version running in Vietnamese which makes me believe that he flashed something to the stock ROM to gain SIM detection of 3rd party cards.. Anyone have any ideas about such a hardware locking mechanism?

He's referring to the service mode. In that case, here are the steps to perform an unlock using the service mode (tested to work ONLY on the docomo models SC-06D and SC-03E; NO GUARANTEE IT WILL WORK ON THE SCL21):
1. Enter service mode by dialing the code in the dialer.
2. Press "UMTS".
3. Press "Debug Screen".
4. Press "Phone Control".
5. Press "Network Lock".
6. Press "Perso SHA256 Off".
7. Menu->Back (if the menu button turns up nothing, then just push "back") then wait 30 seconds.
8. Press "NW Lock NV Data Initallliz" then wait around one minute.
9. Reboot the phone and it SHOULD be unlocked. Works great on the SC-06D and SC-03E, no guarantees with the SCL21. And with the SC-03E newer basebands either hid it away or blocked it out so an older one needs to be flashed in before it will show up for unlocking.
Anyone looking to get one should only do so when they've got a trip to Vietnam in their future (to go get it done in a shop there; they still seem to be the only country with shops doing it) or be using au in Japan.

that`s the first instruction i found when i was browsing the net and tried it but unfortunately it didnt work...... there are still settings in the service menu and all you have to do is click everything that has something to do with the wcdma to gsm..gsm to wcdma or g to wcdma something like that. There`s also a setting that tells somethin like resetting cant remember the exact word and you have to wait for 90 or 60 secs.and restart the phone .and then go back to changing gsm to wcdma .,there`s a setting also that you have to change the frequency .cant remember the step by step guide but because of my eagerness to use the phone i clicked everthing in the service menu and searched every command listed in there.(dont worry it will not brick your phone). After doing all that... this is what happened .. i thought i failed again because the no smoking sign was still there ...so what i did was i clicked the settings and i was so surprised that the menu for mobile network comes out meaning to say that i was able to unlock the settings on the network ..im telling you guys this is what vietnamese unlockers have been doing to unlock this phone that is why they need the phone physically....thats all thanks
And it never prompted for a SIM unlock PIN again? Somebody really needs to go through this carefully and document it; an SCL21 is only 24-25k yen in Japan; I've heard of people paying more to fix broken screens on their international/American S3s.

[Q] Very interesting SIM read situation. Help me...

Hi everyone,
Before you start saying to yourself "oh great, another idiot with a SIM error..." you should know that I've searched for hours and have not found anything like this. Actually, there was one guy that may have, but his thread was three posts long. At this point, I'm just desperate for help or ideas.
So to start, I had soft bricked my E970 and was trying to find my serial to download a KDZ file to recover. Since I didn't know that you could pull the ID strip through the SD slot at the time, I removed my back cover and battery to get to it. Didn't touch anything else while I was back there, so I'm doubtful that this is even relevant. Nevertheless, I eventually was able to recover my phone through LGNPST and moved on to root, unlock and install ROMs. Soon, I realized that my phone wouldn't read my SIM. It took me a while since I had the SIM pulled and in another phone while messing with this one. But then I realized that it wasn't necessarily that it wouldn't read my SIM, but I noticed through the little pop-ups that come when inserting/removing a sim that the phone actually thought I was removing it when inserting it, and inserting it when removing it. It had reversed the "sensing" mechanism somehow. At first, I thought it was my current ROM, so I changed to a completely different one. Same issue. Then I reverted to stock through LGNPST. Same issue. Complete factory hard reset. Same issue. So then I thought maybe it had something to do with removing the battery, like maybe I could trick the phone by inserting, removing the battery, then removing it. That didn't work either.
So please hit me with any and all ideas that could even be remotely possible. I'm willing to try anything. Oh, and yes, I've tried multiple SIMs. All of which are original micro sims - not cut.
Thank you all for any genius you can provide!!!
This seems more like a board(motherboard) problem.

THis might not help but if you are willing to try then maybe , you can read this :
There's one thing I might suggest you to try is to put the device in a complete Factory mode.
I.E. LGNPST the original firmware file , ( don not flash the stock zip , LGNPST the .tot file ).
Make sure device is unrooted and and locked. ( should be automatic once you follow step listed above,) .
Switch off the phone and put your sim card inside , then switch on the phone and see if that works.
Also you can try to tweak with the base-band settings in the device. Secret menu : 3845#*970#

and your phone is carrier unlocked or locked ?

Unfortunately, I've tried that. I used LGNPST to return to stock firmware (.tot/.bin) and inserted the sim while powered off. It still says no sim upon booting. Normally this would lead me to believe it's a hardware issue, but since I know I didn't damage or even touch the sim reader during this whole process, and I know that it was fine before, I can't bring myself to believe it is. And besides that, it's not that it's not reading my sim, it's just that it thinks I remove it when I insert it, so it doesn't even attempt to. I feel like that must be something software related. But I could be wrong...
Also, it is locked to AT&T, using an AT&T sim. Thanks
Still haven't found a solution. Any more ideas?

Verizon Voicemail issue on U1 flashed S9+ with Visible carrier

Hi all,
Alright so this is going to be a long post. So I recently flashed my phone to the U1 firmware, I currently have an unrooted Verizon Unlocked Samsung S9+. I wanted to switch phone carriers over to Visible (subsidiary of Verizon), here are the order of events that occurred:
1. Visible's website says that my device in not compatible using their IMEI checker, there is a solution that was found on reddit about flashing the device on the U1 firmware.
2. I flashed the device on the U1 firmware using Odin and the Visible SIM card worked as expected. No issues with the flash
3. Data/Texts etc.. are all working as expected. Except for Voicemail.
When I try to check my Voicemail, it is acting as if it's still on the Verizon Voicemail system. It says "Welcome to the message management system, please enter your mailbox number". No one can leave me a VM either because of this. I tried several different combinations of numbers, including my full 10 digit cell number and last 4, to which it says "XXX is not a valid mailbox number", which would be because my number is no longer active on Verizon, so it's unable to access it. Which makes sense. The Visible Customer Care team tried the following:
1. Provisioning my VM multiple times
2. Take out SIM card, turn phone off for 1 min, insert SIM card again, and toggle airplane mode for 30 seconds
3. Reset network settings
After numerous days of troubleshooting with them, eventually they said it was because my device isn't compatible, ok, I can't argue with that. I have not seen anyone else experiencing this issue that had flashed their phone to U1 firmware.
After trying all of this with them, I eventually factory reset my device, hoping that might do something. That still did not work.
My questions is, is there something I missed with flashing the U1 firmware? Why is it still using Verizon's VM system even though I flashed it to U1? Is there any way to fix this? Any help is greatly appreciated, and please don't hesitate if you need any other information.

Please check your voice mail settings in your phone app. See my screenshots.
There you should select the correct service provider and the Visible mailbox number.
