Changing DPI - Huawei MediaPad M5 Questions & Answers

I don't know if anyone else feels like it but the default DPI is incredibly high, I changed what I could in the display settings but even on the lowest one it feels like a tablet made for old blind people, it's ridiculous. I attempted to change the DPI in the build.prop via adb to 280 which makes apps look normal again, just like I was used to on my Pixel C (which bit the dust, google couldn't repair so had to refund) but that seems to have the opposite effect on system UI elements like the notification bar, navigation bar, recent apps all appear huge, can anyone point me in the right direction to fix this?

in the developer options i have mine set to 800. all nice and small
notification bar is still relatively big but that seems acceptable. see attachment

I agree... With text size to its' smallest as well as screen size is fine for me

What's interesting is that DPI is set to 480 in the stock build prop file, yet on boot something sets the DPI to 408. I'll bet one of those values was a typo.
Edit - it gets set to 408 if you change display settings to 'small.' It is 480 if you set to 'default.' The value from the build.prop file gets overwritten on boot regardless.

I set the dpi in the developeroptions to 1000. This settings seems pretty awsome but it messes up some some things. Eg. The notificationbar now uses the full screen and is therefore utterly big. Also the desktopmode is nearly unusable (apps are even in "smartphone-ui-mode" - eg. No tabs on chrome).
Does somebody know a fix?

Hi there, have you found any working solution? I am considering this tablet as replacement for my Pixel C but ridiculously huge UI of Mediapad (both fonts and size set to minimum in display settings) is something I could not live with. I thought that using adb without root could work:
Code:
adb shell wm density XXX && adb reboot
Did anybody try?

I'm just setting dpi to 915 in developer options - no root necessary. Unfortunately, this makes the settings unusable but, fortunately, the value is reset on a reboot, so I just do that if I need to change anything. You don't get the settings problem with a lower dpi (e.g. 800), but I still find that makes the UI too big.
Edit: sorry, I'm setting the 'Smallest width' to 915 dp, not setting the dpi. It seems to have much the same effect, though (with View Mode small). UI elements are a sensible size, and I can fit about the same content on the screen for web pages and things like YouTube as I did on my old Galaxy Tab S 10.5

I stumbled on this thread and it is really helpful. One of the reasons I wanted root is to easily change DPI but now I don't need root to do that.
This is a list of the various DPI settings that seem to work.
View Mode (in Display Settings) / DPI / Smallest Width (in Developer Settings)
Largest / 720 / 355
Larger / 640 / 400
Large / 560 / 457
Default / 480 / 533
Small / 408 / 627
--- / 400 / 640
--- / 360 / 711
--- / 320 / 800
I have set mine too 320 DPI and apart from the slightly oversized status bar everything seems to work fin and apps that support it switch to tablet mode (multiple columns).

I just picked up one of these and I set the smallest size in dev. options to 900. Problem: won't survive a reboot. Anyone else? Thing looks like a kid's toy, what a disappointment. Might return mine.

But where do you set the DPI to 320? Do you need root?

Go in Dev settings and change it, like I photo. Or described.

I have followed your settings to set View Mode to Smallest at Display Settings and Minimum Width set to 800dpi. Now I have get nice tablet-mode instead smartphone-mode. But what do you mean about 320DPI setting, where can I set it. Adn finally, do you know how to avoid parameters reset when rebbot tablet?
Thanks in advance.

LCD Density

Hi, I would like to know if it's possible to change the LCD Density but without shrinking apps or dialer ect...
Because the original density 240 is a bit too big for me, I found out that 200 would be a very good compromise but when it is set to 200 my dialer shrinks and other apps like for example Besttube shrinks also.
So basically I'd like the overall to be 200 (The system actually meanings the drawer ect... ) but apps and co to stay 240 ( or to be 200 but without shrinking ).
I've been searching and I saw some people were using 180 density ect... but it is according to me not worth it when some apps shrink...

Cyanogenmod High screen resolution

I tried to raise the dpi on my mediapad while running cyanogemod by after_silence but if i enter anything above 213 it removes the home and back buttons and changes to the phone style notification bar. Any Ideas? His Rom is great, Its every thing i want except I want to use my 1280x800 screen as 1280x800. I would post this question in his devlopment thread but xda wont allow my account to do this since i dont have enough posts.
You need to lower the dpi to simulate a larger screen dpi.
Basically if the resolution is equal, smaller screen would have bigger dpi than bigger screen.
Android still use the full resolution regardless of the dpi. The dpi is an indicator of how big your screen is and it will choose the appropriate icon, font, etc based on that. You don't loose sharpness just because the font look bigger.
As the previous poster said - Android will use the full screen resolution no matter what.
When you raise the DPI, you are telling the OS that there are more dots per inch. The number of dots on the screen is fixed, so raising the DPI is telling the OS the screen has those dots squeezed into a smaller space.
At the default DPI of about 213, you are telling the OS that your 1280 x 800 screen is 7 inches diagonal (small tablet). Note that in Jellybean and higher, a 7" tablet will trigger the "small tablet" interface that looks like a Galaxy Nexus phone layout but still has tablet elements.
On the MediaPad stock ICS ROMs, the "high resolution" mode reports a DPI of 160, which tells the OS that your 1280 x 800 screen is about 9.3" (larger tablet).
If you raise the DPI even higher, let's say to 300, then you are telling the OS your 1280 x 800 screen is 5" diagonal (very small tablet / very large phone, like the Galaxy Note). In ICS this will pop you into the phone interface.
The OS uses this information to scale fonts and user elements. So if an app decides it wants to output text on the screen that is 0.5 inches tall:
- At 213 DPI the text will be 107 pixels tall
- At 160 DPI the text will be 80 pixels tall
- At 300 DPI the text will be 150 pixels tall.

Hello,
just edit your build.prop (/system/build.prop) with appropriate rights (e. g. root explorer):
change
Code:
ro.sf.lcd_density=213
to
Code:
#ro.sf.lcd_density=213

Michael

DPI Settings for ASUS ZenFone 3 Ultra [Android 6.0/Marshmallow]

DPI Settings for ASUS ZenFone 3 Ultra [Android 6.0/Marshmallow]
I have just bought my new ZF3U and as with my previous Huawei P8 Max, which was of the same screen size, I went ahead to find the optimum DPI scaling for enabling Tablet Mode and wanted to share my findings with you. As always, use the following ADB commands to achieve the desired change [Remove brackets and simply replace the below number with your desired DPI and use the second code if you want to revert to your default factory DPI.] Rest assured I have tried all the possible DPI settings and depending on your taste and desired experience, the following DPI choices are the only ones worth trying UNLESS you don't like the Tablet Mode, which in that case don't try practicing any of the settings below or if you want objects bigger then simply increase the DPI until you are happy with your DPI scaling to make objects larger. Enjoy!
adb shell wm density [241] && adb reboot
adb shell wm density reset && adb reboot
DPI 217: Full Tablet Mode- Dual SIM Settings Menu inside Phone Settings and Stock Camera Functionality Lost
DPI 241: Medium Tablet Mode- Stock Camera Manual Mode Functionality Lost and Loss of Tablet Functionality for some Applications such as eBay.
DPI 264: Medium Tablet Mode- As DPI 241 but also shows full name of contacts on the ASUS Contacts application whereas other modes will not show complete Contact Name in Portrait mode.
DPI 289: Limited Tablet Mode-High/Near Stock Scaling of Items/Menus which may defeat the whole point of rescaling the UI DPI.
NOTE: On all the four DPI modes listed above, the Tablet mode is enabled on the ASUS Contacts application with the side menu as well as the tablet mode enabling on the phone settings menu.
Hi there! Just a bit surprised, because I also just bough ZF3U to replace faulted P8 Max
Thanks for your observation... Honestly, I like that it have higher density by default and this time I decided to stay with default DPI for now...
Question: what's exactly meant under "Stock Camera Functionality Lost"?
Does that mean it stopped working or something different?
Yes, it means at the lowest dpi the stock camera will not work at all and at 264 you lose the manual settings inside the camera app so the camera app will have limited functionality. I am hoping to revise these dpi tests when Android 7 is eventually released which I very much hope will be soon.

DPI Settings for ASUS ZenFone 3 Ultra [Android 7.0/Nougat]

DPI Settings for ASUS ZenFone 3 Ultra [Android 7.0/Nougat]
Hello everyone. Following the release of the latest Android 7.0 Firmware update [WW-14.1010.1703.42] for the ZF3Ultra which I have now installed on my 2nd ZF3U (1st one died following the initial faulty firmware which ASUS withdrew from release), I went ahead to find out once again (as I did with my previous Huawei P8 Max) the optimum DPI scaling for enabling Tablet Mode and wanted to share my findings with you. As always, use the following ADB commands to achieve the desired change [Remove brackets and simply replace the below number with your desired DPI and use the second code if you want to revert to your default factory DPI.] With Android 7.0 you can also scale the DPI using the Display option in setting but this will only change the dpi within the parameters that ASUS has specified and this will not enable full tablet mode. However, if you want to practice the dpi scaling on the go without any adb code then there is good news for Android 7.0 users. Under device settings-go to About-Software Information-tap on Build Number multiple times until the message pops up stating that your are now a developer, then go back to the main list of options and click on Developer options-then go all the way down on the list of developer options to heading Drawing-under that heading you will find Smallest width-click on it and change the number to 795 and this will give you the equivalent dpi of 217. OR if you want to try different DPIs then you can change the number accordingly. The higher the number, the smaller the UI objects will be, the lower the number, the bigger the UI objects will be.
Rest assured I have tried all the possible DPI settings and depending on your taste and desired experience, the following DPI scale of 217 is the only one worth trying UNLESS you don't like the Tablet Mode, in which case don't try practicing any of the settings below or if you want objects bigger then simply increase the DPI until you are happy with your DPI scaling to make objects larger.
adb shell wm density [217] && adb reboot
adb shell wm density reset && adb reboot
Observations:
DPI 217: (You can also find my findings on Android 6.0 DPI scaling for the ZF3U on my related post in the forum. In that post you will find details of my findings on additional dpi scales)
-The scale number of 217 will enable FULL Tablet mode on the ZF3U,
-All Tablet Mode compatible apps will be fully operational,
-Dual Sim Functionality will be fully operational (This did not work on Android 6.0 scaling),
-Google has removed the Tablet Mode side menu inside device options so no matter which dpi you use, the side menu is no longer there (It was available in Android 6.0) -I wish Google could bring back all the precious Tablet mode options previously available and even better would be to bring all the tablet UI features of the well respected Paranoid Android ROM (i.e bottom status bar, status bar pop-up options like Windows etc.... those of use who have been using it back in the days know what I am talking about),
-DISADVANTAGE: Stock Camera functionality is lost and the image does not display properly so if you love the dpi and can do without stock camera functionality then stick to this dpi and install a camera app of your choice (I am using Camera MX)-If anyone finds a fix to keep the stock camera operational at dpi scale of 217 without any issues then please do share your workaround.
Enjoy!
Thanks for this awesome tips! Im using Zenfone 3 ultra too and l been finding way to take full advantage of this screen size. This really helps a lot! ?
actually the dial pad, contacts and alarm dont work well with those settings. adjust to 540 or 579 smallest width.

dpi limitations

if I manually set dpi value to less than 289, the phone UI will switch to tablet mode.
is there any way to prevent this and run a lower dpi, say 200-250?
Stock is 480 and smallest is 330 for reference.
