Battery life and performance on oreo compared to nougat? - Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 Questions & Answers

Hi
How is the battery life and performance on oreo compared to nougat on tab s3? I'm worried that the oreo update will decrease battery life and performance, so I haven't updated it yet. I read many posts about the oreo update messing up the battery life of Samsung s8 phones, so I'm very sceptical about the oreo update.
Thank you in advance!

In my opinion, the battery consumption is far more worse, than I've expected.
But that's no big news, because it is/was the same with the nougat/oreo update on the galaxy s9.

Got the v8.0.0 April 1 2018 update yesterday. So far zero issues.

But is it significantly worse than with nougat as the os on the tab s3.

A couple of days in and battery life seems to be a lot better than with the previous OS version. I find I don't have to plug in again until well past lunch time where as before I was plugging in at lunch time. So better battery life and the UI is feeling a little crisper and faster.

Sorry long time irregular user here but on my US wifi only S3 9.7 if that's what we're talking about here, the battery usage is waaay worse than it was before the update 2 days ago which I thought previously was excellent. I don't buy tablets to tweak them but it seems like I have to do something, I did try a list of tips I think I found here when I got the device in December I'll try to dig up, assuming that doesn't work I'll be in here asking noobishly how to roll it back.

I did not do a factory reset after the upgrade from nougat to oreo.... It's still lagging.

I have done nothing after the upgrade and continue to have superior battery life than before.

Negative. Did the upgrade and restarted the tablet. I don't do factory resets.

Oreo improved my s3's speed, minimal lag now. The battery does appear to have taken a small hit tho.

Mines turned into a lag fest and the battery is shocking. Its made a top of the range tablet into a dog.

Upgraded to oreo yesterday (Verizon U.S.). No reset here. Battery life seems worse. 10% drained sitting on my desk for 5 hrs doing nothing, mobile data turned off, wifi 'never' on during sleep.

Battery drain is fine for me. Looks better than before.. Stock WiFi not Verizon.

Update: After a few days of battery drain, things seem to have stabilized now. I seem to remember seeing something in Battery settings stating 'determining battery usage' or something similar. So maybe it takes some time to get straight, but all seems normal now.
That said, why was Oreo even released? I see no serious added features or performance gains. Only a few surface changes. But hey, at least we now have numbered badges. Big deal.

LG G2 battery : Lollipop vs Kitkat

Can everyone tell us if the battery life of the G2 is better or worst after the upgrade to lollipop.
Kk better
same for me
5.0.2 better for me
5.0.2 is better, 40h on, 7h sot (my best). 1h more than kk.
for me better 5.0.2. i guess maybe 10%. maybe in some conditions will be kk and in other conditions lollipop

For me KK still better.
Lollipop is better for me 30b
kitkat had much better battery stats for me...
Kk better for me
When i am watching the results here from the poll i am wondering to update or not With KK i got 7 hours SOT without any problem , with wi-fi and 3g ... Is it so bad with the LP ?
Stop posting Lolipop battery results if you're running a custom lolipop rom and not the stock one.
I assume people want to know if it's worth upgrading to lolipop.
At least that's what I also want to know.
I'm not sure whether to upgrade or not now
I just got given a new g2 a few days ago. I previously was using a galaxy S4. I'm getting literally double the battery life compared to what I got in my S4. I've hit 7.5 hours screen on time in a days use. With my galaxy S4 I was lucky if I got 4 hours SOT...
The battery life on this G2 is phenomenal. I'm actually really impressed with the G2 as a whole. The tiny bezels make it look sexy. The screen is bigger than what I had before. The awesome battery life. And IMO the camera is better too.
The only thing I miss is the sexiness of the AMOLED display. But overall I think the G2 is the better device. Loving it so far. This thread has made me a bit worried about upgrading to lollipop though.
I could take a full system image so I could go back to the way it was, I suppose. I'll need to do a lot of reading up. I'm very experienced with Samsung phones, but this is my first LG and I've only had it 2 days. So much to learn...
lollipop is better for me. after deinstalling Facebook and Facebook Messenger app the battery is great for me

This. I've tested custom LP roms and they had at best "meh" battery life. The Stock LP update from LG is fantastic, not as snappy as AOSP roms but great in terms of battery. But, you need a few cycles to get things going - around 3 to 5 and it's great.
IMO definately worth the upgrade. No problem going back to KK after (KDZ).
Better battery life for me on D80130b
for me has STOCK D802 20H the same as STOCK D802 30B
i cant say one is better ... i think LP (30B) is cleaner ...
I lived one week with lollipop, then returned back to 20D.
Camera is horrible in lollipop.
Standby battery is also horrible in lollipop.
7h sot on kitkat, 4h on lollipop, I had screen on top 31% and then cell standby 28%, not normal.
Can you guys post a battery stats screenshot?
I have a new G2 (got it on Friday), updated to LP immediately as I'm "in love" with the material design (came from an ageing nexus 4). Compared to the nexus, the battery is amazing, but I think I can do better.
For example, I unplugged the phone 8:30 hours ago, right now I have 81% left. usage:
1. screen - 29% (57 minutes) - automatic brightness, I think that the average was about 60-70%+ (mostly sunny outdoors + fluorescent indoors)
2. Cell standby (15%)
3. Android OS (11%)
4. Android system (8%)
5. Phone Idle (7%)
6. Wi-Fi (6%) - was apparently turn on but I am using it for about 4 hours. Other than that - 3G or 4G.
other than that, some apps (on background I have FB+messenger, whatsapp, hangouts but not heavy usage today).
I can estimate that I'll have about 3-4 hours SOT top. Do you guys think this usage is normal?
I also must say that I've done about 3 hard resets after updating it. I think about doing another one, however It's better to give it 1-2 weeks to see if it's getting better (new phone + new update).

5.0/5.0.1 Battery life thread

Just curious to see what the battery life is for everyone who has upgraded to lollipop either by VZW OTA or through JASMINEROM stock 5.0/5.0.1 rooted.
Battery Life is terrible for me on the lollipop 5.0, hardly comes for about 10 hours.
I think we need the next update immediately...
1.5 hours off the charger. On the phone for an hour, battery says I only have 7 hours left
maybe your issue too?
so im new to the note 3, my boss gave me one which is a huge upgrade over my old razr hd (i do miss unlocked bootloader though). anyways i noticed the phone sucked the battery dead pretty quickly but assumed it was bc of the big screen. one thing annoyed me, it constantly said searching using gps in the notification panel. after doing some searching i found that if i turned off the weather widget on the lockscreen (setting->lockscreen->additional information-> uncheck weather) that it stopped searching for gps all the time, giving me annoying notifications about it every 3 secs and my battery life was greatly improved. hope this helps someone

Don't forget to use the app greenify. It can really help with battery life.
I personally did a factory restore after the update. I have had over three hours screen on time with little mods like disabling apps/bloat and also disabling things like quick glance and such. I am even using bluetooth with my pebble watch. coming from an LG G2 with a 3000mah battery and smaller screen this is awesome. The lollipop update was terrible on the G2

I went from being 8 hours off charge to completely dead regardless of use pre-LP to ~20 hours with typical use post-LP. Stock battery and no changes made.
I think i had 12 hours with 8 hours screen on time the other day
About the same, 2 days of use with ~8 hours screen time.
No problems here
I *was* initially having problems since I kept leaving certain settings on unnecessarily. I like to crank up the brightness when I'm near a charger at home or in the car so that I can easily see the screen and basically ooh-and-ahh myself with a showroom look. Leaving it all the way up all day was curtains for the battery life obviously, and that's just me. People truly mindful of getting mileage out of the battery are no doubt more careful.
What has helped is that I try to be mindful of what settings I have enabled, and have gotten stellar performance after a day or two of receiving the update. I find that it's a matter of making sure WiFi is off if you're not on a network. I keep my screen brightness on "Auto," and can live with the slower performance when in power saving mode. Sucks not having root and UPSM anymore, but I can live since I rarely made it down to 20% battery life before anyway.
Your mileage may vary with the Sync setting since if it has trouble getting signal, it may get stuck in a loop and chew up battery. I don't know if there are any radio issues caused by 5.0, but I haven't noticed a difference in signal - I get as good of coverage as one can ask for in Central Ohio, and this still seems to be true so far. Anyhow, signal "hunting" has always caused the most trouble for battery life for me on several different devices.
Hope this helps...
Battery life on my mom's Note 3 is pathetic on the Lollipop update. She would go a whole day with about 40% left and now it goes from full to dead in 45 minutes. It's GPS causing the issue. She used to leave GPS on at all times on 4.4.4 back when it lasted a whole day to 40%. Now leaving it on causes the sub-1-hour battery life and with it off it still drains faster, the end of the day leaves her with a mere 20%. The 5.1 update definitely needs to be pushed ASAP.

She wants her weather updates though, it tries to update GPS info literally nonstop so it absolutely kills the battery. I'm going to downgrade her phone back to 4.4.4 for her next time I'm home.

im 90% sure its the weather widget on the lock screen pinging gps, at least it was for me. i even checked my routers log and it was pinging the weather server nonstop too. i would just deactivate it and download another weather lockscreen widget from the playstore. 5.0 is too smooth to downgrade in my opinion

Alright I'm having her try that out to see if she can leave GPS on now, however she's told me about her phone saying she has no signal randomly and that phone calls randomly drop. Sounds like the update has a poor radio firmware too. Anyone else have this problem?

i have heard other people complain about those issues,(http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-galaxy-note-3/help/lolipop-dropped-calls-t3095754) but for me my radio seems better, in places were co workers have 3g i have 4g. some people say a factory reset fixes those issues but i cant confirm or deny
Noticing poor battery life after upgrading to the Jasmine 5.0 ROM. Upgraded to Jasmine 5.02 and now I'm just deciding on when to wipe data and start from scratch.
The highest battery users were all applications, the Android OS and finally the Screen. I believe this clearly suggests that there's a battery drain bug with some of the app restores that were done after upgrading.

Factory reset..my battery life was considerably better on Lollipop, but I reset immediately after doing the update. Good practice

Overall Nougat update

Overall as per looks it's awesome, but at performance and battery it's not good, tbh it was much better on marshmallow...
I think this is a thing now, the more the devices get updated to nougat the more their battery life sucks..
I charge my P9 Plus 2 times a day due to this bad update!
As I currently own a OnePlus 3t as well and since it got updated to the latest nougat it's battery life also sucks!:crying:
I got my update through the phone and did not install it from PC onto my P9 Plus..
What are your reviews on the new nougat update?
Though, if someone has has a fix to this update that causes bad battery and bad performance, then please be free to mention it below!
Well at least for Europe there is a new Update from B360 to B370 that is supposed to also improve battery consumption. I must say I didn't notice the battery lasting any less long than under MM anyway, for me it stayed just the same more or less. I can make it through the day+night easily, depending on how much I use even two days. If you say you have to charge twice a day that definitely doesn't sound normal, did you ever try if a factory reset resolves the issue?
No I didn't, it just automatically updated with my current data which was on MM

Adaptive Battery drains your battery faster

So yeah been messing about with my phone and testing a few things and I have come to the conclusion that with it off my battery lasts longer than what it does with it on. Who would of thought lol
Gonna try to disable it and test, since it appeared in miui 10 i enabled it and, update after update i've been noticed worse battery life, so yeah, i'm gonna test it and see how it goes.

Thank you!
Wow, good finding.

Thanks for the information. I will try it out and report here later.
I've adaptive battery and on miui 10 (9.3.1) battery is life is pretty good
I am not a poco user, have pixel 3. The adaptive battery is meant to learn your pattern of using the phone and improve battery using that data. So if initially the battery life is bad, it's not a problem. I would suggest to keep it on and see after a week or so the battery life increases drastically.
I was also getting like only 8-9 hours total time on both my new and RMAd pixel 3 at the beginning. Now I charge my battery once in 2 days.
Testing...
Hurmm, i tried disabling it
The battery standby seems to be much better than enabling before it..
Will post the update after test it for a while
well,in my case its different...the screen on time is the same while the standby drain is a bit higher with this feature disabled!.
on miuipro 9.1.24 (stock kernel).
Some also said that disabling MIUI optimization in Developer Options and Non-interactive mode in Battery and Performance settings help alleviate the active and idle drain problems. I can't link the thread, I tried it and felt some changes.
Adaptive Battery
How to turn it off in MiUI 11?
Hey what did you conclude then

S21 Positive comments

I have the base s21 on order due to arrive on friday upgrading from an s9. So far i'm yet to see any positive comments about the phone and is making me consider sending it back straight away and getting something else.
I would love to hear nice comments from real day to day users to hopefully sway me back the other way but with the camera, battery and chrome issues i've been seeing i don't know if i can commit.

The battery is good, just not on this latest february update. Before the update my S21 exynos had good battery life (6hours SOT on 4G, 7-8hours SOT on wifi). So we just need to wait for samsung to fix the battery drain this newest update caused.
Haven't had any of the issues others are posting, S21 (Snapdragon). Coming from 20+ battery not as good, but not seeing the drain others are complaining about. Very happy, even my Smart unlock works much more often, and finger print reader definitely better, but not near as good as my old Pixel. It was lightening. Loved the look of the old curved screen, but with flat, have less issues with case fitting and accidental swipes. Prefer the S21 size, I don't use my phone for games or Kindle, more as a phone and information center and controller for other devices. Oh yea, and a ton of music and Android Auto, wifi calling works better, even my screen saver when charging stays on now even though hits 100% charged. Glad I took them up on the "free" upgrade
The S21 Ultra is an all day phone.
2 Days for moderate use.
