[S9+ exynos] >4%/hr Standby drain exclusively on Samsung Galaxy phones - Samsung Galaxy S9+ Questions & Answers

Hi all,
I am one of the many people complaining for the very poor battery life of the Exynos S9+, but my problem is more extended.
In the previous days I read all the topics related to battery drain in the S9+ and S9 sections of the forum, without finding any solution
My problem is very strange: every Samsung Galaxy I owned (S6, S7edge, S8 and now S9+) has a standby drain around 4%/hr. This is very bad, since more or less 60%-70% of my battery during a standard working day is drained without using the device. In 24hrs I can reach 0% battery with a few minutes of SOT.
I tried to disable almost everything (AOD, sync, location, google location history, nearby wifi bt search etc), hard resetted the device and started from scratch, but the standby drain is always the same.
The very strange thing is that if I configure with all the same apps and accounts a device which is not a Samsung galaxy I have maximum 0,5%hr standby drain. I tested it recently with Lg G6 and Xiaomi MiA1 and the drain is not present. Again, same apps and same setup of the phone.
There should be something specific in the configuration of my Galaxy devices that causes drain, but in 3 years I couldn't find it.
Is there anyone who can help me? What am I missing?

Did you disable the 4G usage while on wifi in the developer settings?

No, I will try today thank you. But for the most part of my day I am not under wifi, I am under 4g (full bars), so it will have effect only on the few hours I pass at home with the wifi connection

Ah ok, then this will maybe not help too much. Whats the battery usage percentage of your android system? Please add a screenshot of your statistics at the end of a battery cycle.

This is one of the best battery cycles of the last days:
12h 50min since unplugged
16% remaining battery
2:54 SOT
3,2%/hr standby drain
More than half of the SOT done under wifi during the evening, from 8:30am to 18:00 under 4g.
This is a terrible battery life, I cannot get to the end of a working day.. And this was one of the best days. Sometimes the standby drain is more than 4%/hr

Nothing obvious jumps out but that does look worse than normal, are you travelling around/ in bright sunlight a lot?
Few things to try -
1) Download betterbatterystats and enable through adb commands
2) what was the screen brightness like on GSAM?
3) factory reset did work for me

Something is wrong.
Do you have any apps running in the background all the time ?
Or dozens of accounts syncing?
Does your phone actually go into sleep or dozens mode ?
Do you have running bixby or google Assistent on ?
Do you use Iris scanner ?

Thanks for the support. I also have yesterday's screenshots of betterbatterystats, here attached.
It seems to sleep a good percentage of time.
No, I'm not traveling, I stayed the whole day in the office.
Accounts : Google, Facebook, WhatsApp, Twitter.
Yes, intelligent face scan is on

Same here i just bought the phone a few days ago. Disabled bloat and still i cant even get close to 24hours max apx 14 if i dont touch it. My Old S8Plus was so much better. Going to try a factory reset in the next few days. I must admit i did restore from a previous backup.

Facebook is a known battery hog, please try to use the official lite app from facebook. Intelligent scan always activates the iris scanner as soon as you turn on your device. Do you use your lockscreen alot while not unlocking your phone? During this time the iris scanner is wasting energy cause it constantly scans for your eyes. I have setup my device to start scanning only when i swipe up on the lockscreen.
Whats with that 1h20min of Google Play services. Did you use the playstore or some other stuff from Google for that long amount of time actively?

I will try today to remove Facebook and install Lite (the strange thing is that with my LG G6 and MiA1 with the official Facebook app I have zero problems).
Iris scanner and lockscreen are almost never engaged. The phone is sitting on the desk, and I wake it up through fingerprint most of the times.
Now here in Italy it's 11AM, the phone is unplugged since 7:30Am and the standby drain is already 4,5%/h

Ok, thanks for the info. Hm but still, is your usage of Google Play Services always this high? Mine isnt even listed with hours and minutes, only with 3% usage in 30h! And im still on 46% battery.

I have an S9+ Exynos since launch, and even when at first it came with some drain issues, those and many more were addressed with latest update (BRE).
From what I can see, you are using 2 SIM's and your signal is not that good, which contributes to the battery drain.
Other question: how are you doing the backup/restore of your things?, because the S9+ is known for being picky with these, and if you don't do it properly, it will impact battery and application behavior.
More info here (1:10):
https://youtu.be/mBAjdcP0ZEM
Is better if you can try a clean installation and remove/disable the things you don't use. I'm able to get +5hrs SOT in a period of 40-48hrs constantly; I recharge my phone every 2 days and the battery drain overnight is around 3%. I'm all stock, no root or ADB tweaks, and the only thing I don't use is AOD because is not useful for me.
Also I know many other people with similar results as mine, so is a matter of configuration or your phone is defective and you would need to change it.
Good luck!

Hi,
My main problem is that I have the same exact problem with the S8 and S7edge, but not with the LG G6... so it's something related to my configuration on samsung phones (same account, same apps, same everything). That's the reason why I'm sure that the phone is not defective.
I have the same problem if I use it in Single sim, and 90% of the day I am under full bars of 4G+ coverage.
The configuration started from scratch (did not start from previous backups). I had just setted up my google account and then reinstalled everything from play store. The only backup I recovered is Whatsapp (through the internal backup function of the app on google drive)
Thanks to everyone for the support!

Facebook Lite: no results. Still at 3,5% standby drain per hour.

Has no implications, it seems that for no reason that option drains a lot of battery for some, so maybe you want to give a try.
Everything works perfectly with it disabled, I run this options since I got my S9+ and is day and night difference.

[Q] Android OS battery drain in CM10 and Touchwiz StockROM

Hi all,
I'm new in this forum so I hope to break no rules in my first post. So first of all: I'm fighting this problem for nearly a year right now, I tried so many things I can't even remember and I really never found a answer in any forum.
I had a Samsung Nexus S which started to have this strange Android OS battery drain some weeks before the OTA ICS came in. I read thousands of forum posts to try tons of stuff to solve the problem without any success.
I then decided three weeks ago that it's obviously time to get a new phone so that I bought the Galaxy SIII (int). Strangely I still have great problems with my battery life which brought me here to ask some pros now.
Phone: Samsung Galaxy SIII (int)
ROM: StockROM (4.1.1) and CM10 Nightly
Carrier: German E-Plus
What is the most noticeable about the battery drain is, that it appears in standby (over night) in both ROMs, Stock and CM10 likewise with some minor differences.
In 10h standby (Wifi on, Bluetooth, GPS, NFC all off, only few widgets, AquaMail on push) battery goes down from 100% to 70%.
After all, I tested both ROMs in the same situation over night and the bettery drain is pretty comparable (see the screenshots).
What I already tried (in both ROMs):
- disable all Google Maps autostarts and disable all location services
- disable apps like Gtalk, G+ etc.
- uninstall AquaMail
without any effect on the standby battery drain...
Any idea about this?
Thank you,
Mika

It can happen if u have a weak network signal. It takes out a whole lot of battery. And with wifi on, I believe that's a decent battery life. And try putting the phone on flight mode during night. Saves a real bunch of juice. And do a cache clean and reboot.

Thanks for the quick reply! About the network signal: in both cases the signal was pretty good. Did you check the screenshots? In both ROMs the NetworkLocationLocator seems to use much battery during night. Is that normal in standby?
What is strange as well is, that after I changed the SIM card into my new phone, did a factory reset on the old one (which I did several times before) and installed some basic stuff with a different google account, it looses some 10% in 24h in standby with Wifi on.
Is there any possibility, the battery life changes significantly with changing the google account because of differences in the contact or calendar app or whatever? Or could be the missing SIM be the huge difference in battery life?
Thanks again
Mika
Disable all sensors gs 3 has loads of them for smart stay front cam needs to be on always which drains battery.. So that should help the case

With wifi on, that's a real good battery life.! A whole day and just 10%. And I don't think battery life has anything to do with the Google account. If u have turned on auto sync, that's gonna consume some battery too as the apps like fb keep running in background.

Hi Lifehacker7,
like I wrote, the 24h and 10% do not concern the Galaxy SIII but my old phone.
Maybe I have to clarify that again: it's not about a general battery life but about the standby power consumption. Maybe someone could have a look at the screenshots. I guess they might be very helpfull!
And again: there are two different ROMs I tried. So it could have nothing to do with the sensors and stuff since the CM10 does not use them at all...
Cheers,
Mika
nice ideas
Anybody who could maybe have a look at the BetterBatteryStats screenshots and say whether there's something conspicuous?
Is for example the deep sleep mode with its 75% in standby normal or should that be less?
Should be the Android OS (in CM10 ROM) or Android System (in StockROM) be the most power consuming process? With my old phone its always the Wifi which is first in list.
Should Google Maps with its three processes, especially the NetworkLocationLocator (see the screenshot of the StockROM) wake up the system so often in the night?
Any ideas?

No, I even turned off the location services completely, without any effect!
I tested both phones, my old and my new one again this night with the same turned on/off (Wifi on, GPS off, auto sync on, ...) both with a SIM card with the same carrier and both with some apps like fb, whatsapp, weather widget. Old one lost 3% in 8h, new one lost 21% in the same time.
No ideas?
You can see a bunch of threads on the google forums already regarding miserable battery life on Android 4.2.x because of LocationServices
Anyways, try this on CM10.x ...disable Location services (GPS + Wireless) ..reboot ... now enable the GPS only ... if it asks that Google will collect data in background, blah blah select Disagree ... reboot
Using Developer Option menu enable onscreen CPU Usage and leave phone on standby ... you will see that Android OS usage will come down drastically (almost stop!)

I tried that in StockROM, and it did not change anything, same battery drain in standby. The NetworkLocationLocator in BetterBatteryStats is not listed under partial Wakelocks anymore. So I think, that's not the problem.

This is the 8 hours after I turned off location services on StockROM. I barely used the phone this 8 hours.

why is the battery life so poor?

I got an LG G5 2 weeks ago and the battery has been outrageously bad. I bought it used and the owned has owned it for 2 to 3 months. There is very little standby drain and the phone is cold to the touch within minutes. Overnight drain is around 10 to 12 percent with always on display which is normal considering the 1 percent per hour loss plus the normal overnight drain. However when I turn the screen on the screen on time is very poor only about 2.5 hrs to 3 hours. The screen brightness is set 20 to 40 percent no auto brightness. There appears to be nothing draining the battery with the screen being the biggest battery draining. I have location nfc Bluetooth and LTE turned off. Along with touch sounds and touch vibration but toggling these settings makes no difference. Its impossible to find out more because I have no root. If this battery continues to be this poor I'm going to be selling it because I cannot stand having to charge twice a day even with quickcharge 3.0 old xiaomi redmi note 3 lasted 2 to 3 times longer on the battery. Any ideas what could be eating my battery?
Hi
I get 4 to 5 hours screen on time and I use my brightness at 75% to 100%, never as low as 20-40% it's too dark.
What apps do you use when you do have the screen on? Maps and games will drop you to 2-3 hours screen on time like all phones, but normal apps (excluding snapchat) will give you 4-5 SOT.
I would turn off always on display, you won't miss it.
Eeeeh , your Android system and android Os are high , screen should consumpt most of the battery about 30-40% mine does 34% with 35% brightness and Phone idle 22% my android system at 9% android Os 6% , if you dont game you get nearly 1 day life from your battery but if you do you need 2-3 timers charging per day , also if you use Data it just sucks the battery like vacum. So there is a drain in your system but its true lg g5 consumps a lot in order to give you performance in priority and not power saving. Dont forget G5s are the only high range phone that you can swip your battery with no deal , they are giving you that feature , Use it!!! You can grab up to 3600mah (2800 stock) extended capacity battery with a wall charger from ebay really cheap and never again have a battery problem. Also this batterys are lithium ones , i saw in your pic 10% i suggest not to go below 20% you are killing really fast lithium batterys if you decharge them!!!

Always on display barely drains any battery. I use apps such as facebook, text messaging, messenger, instagram, chrome, etc. I rarely play games because the second I open a game the battery life is only about 1.5 hours sot.
Well Facebook and messenger should be a couple of alarm bells when talking about battery life surely? Also, you bought it second hand, you have no idea how the previous owner treated the battery in the time they had it no matter how short a period it was.

Hello friends
I have a problem with battery and also unable to turn on the WiFi after update.
I just bought my brand new G5 H860 TWN and updated it, which cause the whole device to malfunction.
please correct me if I'm mistaken. An update is meant to improve the functionality of a device not to destroy it.
Apart from this problem the interesting thing is that non of the LG customer cares know whats causing the problem,
A word of advice to LG. Please Do not make something that you don't know **** about.

have nice day.

Thanks for your advise my friend, factory resetting the device was the first thing i did, but i did not solve the issue.
i have tried the following:
-Flash other ROMs from different countries for H860
-booted the device into safe mode and tried to enable the WiFi and etc.
my WiFi MAC is set to 02:00:00:00:00:00 and it means that WiFi has not been detected by android. Also the Bluetooth address is defined as "unavailable".
and the worst of all is its battery drain issue which kill my battery within 5 hours in standby mode, while i can not notice any abnormal battery consumption in "BATTERY USE DETAILS" section in Battery usage setting. this probably means that some other consumer(perhaps the WiFi) uses the battery without being listed.

H860? H860 haven't got root nor custom ROM yet. Bootloader of H860's still locked.
I've got a brand new LG G5 which I have been using since Thursday and I honestly can say it sucks big time compared to my 2 year old Z3 which can easily get me 4 hrs SoD on mixed usage. Using the exact same set up of apps, location and wifi/mobile use, I am struggling to see more than 2.5hrs SoD with the G5. Honestly, it just drains battery like no tomorrow and this is fresh battery... I dread to think what it will be like in 2 years. Sony made a lot of mistakes but the Z3 really excelled...

New G6, horrible battery life

Hey peeps!
Got my new G6 two days ago and BOY is it a beautiful phone!
One thing though that I didn't expect to have issues with; the battery life is horrible.
First day I got just under 3 hours of screen-on-time.
Charged it and left it over night. Was at 94% when I went to bed and 51% when I woke up 8 hours later.
Can't be normal? I've tried resetting the phone, but I don't think it worked.
Left home at 9:55 and the battery was at 37%. Arrived at work at 10:33 and it was down to 31% and I had barely touched it during that time.
I'm new to Android so I'm not sure what to do next?
Help! :c
There's an issue with the phone sometimes draining for no apparent reason when it's sleeping. It's happening to a lot of people. Most likely it's a bug in Android 7.0 and will be fixed in the next Android update. For now I put my phone in Airplane Mode when I go to sleep. It fixes the problem and my phone only drains 1-2% overnight.
Let it settle for a while, at least for a week. You could try with a factory reset if you want, I didn't.
Now I have at least 4h SoT under wifi. I'm currently at 42%, after 19 hours from the last charge, and 3h45m of SoT.
Please bear in mind that 4G, traveling and low reception are generally speaking the main battery killers, and there is nothing you can do about that.
For those who complain about battery life of G6, Here is a short view
9am-5pm continuous voice recording with 1 hour break in between
Around 10-15 camera clicks
Browsing use BRAVE browser, disable chrome for better life. Use BRAVE browser which is based on same chrome platform but more efficient.- 2hours
Facebook app used 40min around
Twitter sometime
WhatsApp for around 2hours
Screen brightness between 35~50%
Two sim cards, one on 4g LTE
Screen on time 6hours 10minutes
Remaining battery-20%
There is something wrong with your battery. It should last about 5h SOT. Drain after the night should be about 2% with AOD disabled.
Something is draining your battery. Begin with turning off location services if it's enabled and see if that helps. I get minimum 5 hours screen on time and closer to 6-8 for the most part even when on mobile data a lot.
I've got the same problem. I'm rooted, have all sorts of bloatware disabled, running servicely and naptime. I've shut off my bluetooth and my location and I'm on Wifi. In the last 3 hours since I've unplugged my phone from the charger I'm sitting at 66% battery with 1 hour of screen time, 1.5 hours deep sleep, and 30 minutes awake. So I'm looking to get a little over two hours of screen on time. I can't think of anything else to do.
Look into disabling QuickMemo bull****.

I think there is not a battery problem
For me, It is surely a software bug.
I use AOD for all the day, 3 email account, WiFi and 4G on, many apps in background like facebook, messenger, whatsapp, telegram and other and I get 5.5hrs with 7% battery.
But only if I use the phone more than usual. Otherwise I got 3.5 hrs with the same configuration due to a big draining issue of the "idle phone" process.
Probably we have to wait the next big update hoping that it fixes everything.
I have oneplus 3t and lg g6 and htc u11 LG's battery is the best out of the three devices
I updated the phone with LG Bridge (there was no OTA updates available) and for some reason got a completely new firmware.
Not really an update but it installed a, what seems like, a firmware meant for the Chinese market. Had the Korean on before.
This *seems* to have fixed it.

There is something wrong with your battery. It should last about 5h SOT. Drain after the night should be about 2% with AOD disabled.

Even with aod enabled I get less than 2% drain overnight on airplane mode.

The LG Bridge update didn't actually fix it. The problem was back after a while.
Downloaded GSam and realised that the Google Quicksearch Box was stuck in wakelock or whatever it's called so I disabled the Google App in settings and that did indeed fix the whole problem. My phone has been sitting at 98% for almost 3 hours now (haven't touched it obviously).

Damn, i use that a lot... Could you check if it was a temporary problem or is the widget itself? Thanks in advance

I've fiddled around with it a bit today, but the version installed from the Play store is still not working for me. Horrible battery drain.
I found a newer (beta) version on apkmirror that I installed and that seems to have fixed it. I've got the quick searchbox enabled and no battery drain so far. It's only been a few hours though but I don't think it's gonna flare up again. It should've by now if the problem was still there.

I've had a couple of force closes from the Google app and random battery drain at times that I couldn't pinpoint. Overall I've actually loved the battery life on the phone when the phone isn't reporting an idle drain. I appreciate the beta link, hopefully that fixes the problem I've had. :good:

Battery Life on Exynos S9+ (Unusual Android OS consumption)

I'm getting an appalling battery life on my S9+
The device is a European version with the Exynos CPU, non-rooted (and i don't wish to do so as i do like using the Samsung security features that the device offers)
I've attached a screen grab which was taken right after waking up in the morning. During the night (around 7 hours of sleep) i've lost 14 percent from when i put it away
Any suggestions? I'm really in a loss for what to do other than rooting and modding
PS: Suggestions of the sort like: Turn off AOD or Turn off Sync or Turn off Mobile Data aren't really helpful. I know that these drain battery but the device has these features for a reason and the battery was mostly fine when i purchased it with them on.

I know you didn't want to hear it but AOD will be responsible for most of the drain, I lose < 1% per hour overnight with it off and about 2% with it on. Totally agree about the functionality but I just set my AOD on a timer so it isn't on overnight.
The android system drain isn't unreasonably high given the phone has spent a fair amount of time idle, but you could try is going apps > show system apps > android system > turn off background usage (doesn't break anything that im aware of but will turn back on when the phone is rebooted)
Other things to try is wipe the system cache and turn off wireless device scanning from the location menu
Seems I'll have to test it out. Never before noticed a huge drain from using AOD on my old s7 edge and it's a lovely lovely feature. The Android OS seemed a bit high to me but unsure to why
S9+exynos also here. No issues with batterylife for me
I'm having the same problem. Around 16% lost at night. Maybe the last firmware update is to blame.

I did a clear/delete cache after the update

As someone pointed out, just disable background activity for Android System and that should do the trick.
I have been running with this option since launch with zero collateral effects; just remember to do this each time you reboot the phone.

How do you do that?

You go to Apps and after which Show System Apps - Android System - Battery
You'll see the option there. I tried it for me it did practically nothing. Battery drain for Android System combined with Android OS takes more than 25% according to the battery stats. With a messily 3 hours of screen time including in that an hour of gaming with a 2D freemium game.

Terrible idle battery drain

Hello!
So, my S21 have terrible battery life. It's both idle, and when in use.
The following charts are overnight. As you can see, it's draining fast.
We're talking 35% overnight. As you can see, the phone is actually in deep doze!
I installed GSam battery monitor and gave it some permissions in order to track system apps.
Facts:
- S21 Exonys
- 120hz display
- Always on display is only on "single tap"
- Wifi, 5G turned on,
- Location is off
- Barely any apps running
- I rarely game or anything like that. I just browse the web and check Snapchat and messenger.
- Most apps are already deep-sleeping, 45 of them.
- Many apps are sleeping
- Actually, most app usage is very very low.
I'm coming from a Sony Xperia 5 II, and the battery indicator rarely moves. On this phone, it's extreme.
Any ideas? A factory reset is out of the picture... I've got to much stuff to setup again, including 10 2FA-accounts which is a nightmare.
Edit: added wakelocks from GSam.
Are you on February update? It's a known issue.. Something went terrible wrong after that update. Are you mobile data or WiFi connected? For me the issue only occurs when on mobile data. I lose around 6-7 % per hour in idle. Four hours and I'm down 30% without using the phone.
Please don't create a second thread for this issue.
Issues with the battery life :(
Hi I just got my S21 256 GB (Exynos version). I moved away from my Note10+ as it was too big and battery too poor, bad finger print reader and then I truly hate the curved displays... I really like the look and feel of the S21. Awesome phone...

Yes, I've got the February update. It seems it affects a lot of people.
I've seen a lot of people throw around "will be fixed in the next few days", but I have seen 0 sources for that claim. Do you know anything?
