I created a small app that adds channels to the new Android TV 8.0 home screen and fills them with content from my DLNA media server. The channels are regularly updated and media can be streamed with any media player app installed.
Features:
Browse local DLNA media servers.
Select folders from media servers to be added to the TV home screen.
Directly open media stream with external playback app (e.g. VLC).
View available media servers as channel on the TV home screen.
Configurable channel update interval.
Play Store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=at.nullptr.dlnachannels
APKs: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1PX46yJrM-jSKmYwajMSz5IJF47mTspgD
Note:
The app is in beta. At the moment it was tested with one device, one DLNA server, VLC as media player app and a limited set of media files. Let me know if there are any issues.

Seems to work pretty solid. How do you get the covers to display? What DLNA server are you using?

This is pretty awesome. It just works. Love the app. The app sees my WD My Cloud drive with my movies on it. The drive already has all the artwork in it. Is there a way to display the artwork instead of the movie thumbnails. Either way this is a great app! Anyone who has a media server should check this out.

You can even add movies to the Play Next Channel. You really did a great job with this app.

Not sure if this is a DLNA issue or the app issue. I use a WD My Cloud drive connected to my network. The app finds the WD My Cloud as a DLNA server and I can browse the folder with movies and all the movies show up. But when I make the folder with the movies a channel.... some of the movies are missing. If I go back to the WD My Cloud folder in the DLNA list I used to make the channel the files are still there. Sorry if my description is less than clear. Some movies only fail to show up in the Channel I create from the server.

After updating shield to 7.0.2 it seems all movies on DLNA server are showing up. So I would also like to know how do you get the cover art to show up on the channel. Seems to work great btw.

@n1gh7mar3: I am using the DLNA server that comes with Plex.

Thank you! Actually, I didn't know that "Play Next" works - unintentional feature
I have updated the app last week a few times and I will try to update it regularly. It has crash reporting integrated and I get notified when the app has issues with new DLNA servers.

My DLNA server (Plex) does the artwork lookup automatically. Right now the app uses the images the DLNA server provides. Does it work correctly when you try in other app? (e.g. VLC for Android TV)

if i may ask the question in theory would this work for other things other than DLNA ? like can you convert other apps to show as channel with content?

In general "converting other apps to show as channel with content" is likely not possible.
I am not converting/modifying an app to show as a channel. The "DLNA channels" app searches in your local network for media servers and creates channels based on their content. Then, when you try to play an item, the app looks for a compatible media-player app on the device that can play it.
It depends on what you are thinking of in particular. If the app that you are thinking of looks for content somewhere (files, local network, internet) it is most likely possible to implement the same in a new app for it that offers the content as channels.

Just wanted to come back and say I think I have this working beautifully! Created a Plex Media Server on my old i3 Laptop,
and setup the library from my WD My Cloud 2tb drive that has all my movies. I didn't use the shields Plex Media Server because it seems to slow my Shield down when the Plex Media Server and the app are both enabled. Not sure why...it just feels sluggish when they are both enabled. Scanned in my movies library from the WD My Cloud into the Plex Media server, fired up the DLNA app on the shield tv pro and the Plex Media Server showed up in the DLNA App on the shield with all the movie artwork, not just thumbnails. Browsed to the folder with the movie library and all my movies seem to be there. Clicked on create Channel and there it was! all my movies in a channel right on the home screen complete with cover art. No more opening an app and browsing for movies. And the movies seem to open up very quickly. I'm not sure why more people aren't using this??? If you have a NAS drive with DLNA or any DLNA media server this should be a must.
Thanks again for a great app!

Anyway to get the APK? I can't find it in the store or push it from online

I can provide an APK today in the evening. When you try it online what does Playstore say? Device incompatible? (If so, are you running Android 8 Oreo?)

Not compatible with any of my Oreo devices. My shield has been on Oreo for a few weeks now too

I am using minidlna as mediaserver.. it works good for Sony TV and Sony Bluray.. but no artworks/posters with dlna channels..
I don't want to change my dlna server, because I am writing the artwork-images locally to have some extra information.. so this minidlna is good for that. Files are playing ok by dlna channels but no artworks showing up!

The app can only display artwork/thumbnails if the DLNA server provides them. Can you try if it works in another DLNA client (e.g. Windows File Explorer or VLC Media Player on Android). If they do not show any artwork/thumbnails either than it is a server issue and I cannot do anything about it.
(Edit: Or did you mean that your Sony TV shows the artwork from MiniDLNA and DLNA Channels does not?)

Yes, I did and do mean that my Sony TV shows the artwork from MiniDLNA and DLNA Channels does not.
And sony bluray disc player shows artwork from minidlna.
And one another tv standalone digibox showed the artwork correctly.
And dlna channes does not show.
AND VLC in android tv shows the artwork from minidlna ok.

Right now I am in the process of rewriting a large part of the App (replacing the third party DLNA library with my own). I haven't released it to everyone yet because I want to test it more. But if you want, you can join the Beta-Test here: https://play.google.com/apps/testing/at.nullptr.dlnachannels.
I think the artwork with MiniDLNA should work in the new version.

YES! I can confirm that artworks from minidlna are showing up now with this beta version! Very good!

How often does the app checks for if the artwork has changed? I wrote in the artwork if the recording is watched or going to be deleted.. and no update seen.. in dlna channels? (and Sony .. shows them immediately).

The artwork is not updating due to 2 reasons:
MiniDLNA gives no indication that an image has changed (e.g. changing the URL)
The images shown in the channels on the homescreen are downloaded and cached by Android. It will not download an image again if the URL does not change. (Even removing and adding the channel again does not matter. The only way I got the homescreen to refresh the image was by deleting the data of some system apps in the settings menu- i think "Media Storage" was the one - but this also removed all my channels)
Sorry to say it but I don't see a good and easy way that would work around these limitations. I guess it works on the Sony TV because it is not caching images but instead downloading everything every time.

Do you mean that if I add some random data sequence to minidlna link.. the homescreen will update every time?
Maybe I will try that.

Air Video video transcode/stream alternative for Android?

I used to have the iphone 3gs, but now i have a Samsung Galaxy with Android 2.1.
I had a great program called Air Video, it was so great, i almost chose not to upgrade to android cause it wasnt on the Andriod platform.
You installed a client on the phone, and a transcode server software on your pc, and then the magic began, you could stream any kind of video format straight from your PC to your phone in realtime. It supported mkv, divx and a whole lot of other formats. I could even stream video from my satelite tuner straight to my phone with this software. It was totaly mindblowing, and it worked both on 3g and over wifi, you just adjusted the quality of the stream in the client program on the phone. I could lay in bed, and watch my whole video archive straight from my pc on my phone, i could watch it from work and anywhere with 3g coverage.
The great thing about this program, was that everything was on the fly, and went automaticly, you didnt have to convert EVERY video file to mp4 (or simular) before you started streaming.
Now im wondering, is there a good alternative(program or guide), that will work the same way on android phones?
PS Ive tried Orb, and it couldnt realy compete, at all
This sounds awesome...I want to know too.
I been talking with the developer of Mezzmo who working on his server app to support the Droid X, but I believe that is one of the few apps thats trying to work on something. I miss airvideo myself, his forum is filled with people begging for him to port it to android. I'm hoping Froyo will allow me to use either Mezzmo (he recently said that the phone is looking for the moov atom at the front instead of the end like how ffmpeg puts it. I downloaded a adobe air app to move it and still no luck streaming.
Airmote doesnt work
Using ES Explorer to connect to samba shares would be cool if I could figure out how to get a1video player to play the streamed file (but since the moov atom is at the end it would have to download the entire clip to view it first)
umediaplayer I can't find to test out, that or homepipe
Orblive is a joke on Android.
Tried Tversity to android reading a way to use the webpage frontend, but same streaming issue.
Only thing sucks as of now is the fact there is no real streaming from PC option that works well for the array of video types out there like airvideo.
I did find something interesting even though it only streamed a couple avi files. I loaded yxplay and pointed it to TVersity 192.168.1.101:41952.
I have the samsung galaxy s, and i heard that Samsung PC Share Manager + Allshare on the phone, would make streaming mkv from my pc easy.
I hurried up, and installed Samsung PC Share Manager, and got the error, "Server can`t start"
Another great piece of samsung software, almost as good as Kies
(Wich btw also doesnt work on my win7 64bit, no matter what i try)
I even tried Samsung Pc Share Manager on a Vista 32 box, same error there. Can`t start server.
Oh how i love Samsung software.
Have you had a look at Websharing?
Tried it briefly, no go.

Try VLC
You can use VLC to transcode from a capture device, another stream, or media files.
I've used a Windows Media Server for years with my Windows Mobile Touch Pro (and its WiMo predecessors). I stream my police scanner, TV and music files but there's no working Android player. I left my WMS as is but run VLC on a workstation, taking the WMS stream and transcoding it to RTSP for the Android. It works just fine.
I suspect that this would be very difficult if not impossible to do on Android right now. Streaming support just isn't up to par within the core OS.
Try VLC Stream and Convert. (Developer's website)
It's not exactly simple or user-friendly, but it works wonderfully to transcode and stream any video (or audio) file on demand from my server to my Nexus One.
The server software is VLC, which is a cross-platform application and works on Linux, Windows, and Mac OSX.
There is a free as well as a paid version in the market. The free version transcodes and streams without a problem.
I just have it set up to work over wifi, but it should work over 3g as well, if you adjust the quality down a bit.

Can you share the settings on VLC to get the transcoding to work?
The app is not really user friendly on this aspect
Thanks

A small guide perhaps?
So you can choose wich files to stream from the pc from the phone? Or do you have to start a video file in vlc to able to stream to android?
Edit:
I used the setup from here: http://sites.google.com/site/traveldevel/vlc-stream-convert/setup
And i was able to stream video via rtsp, the quality wasnt great but good enough, this is definatly a step forward
Edit2: Quality could be adjusted, and it looks great over wifi now, im so happy

Dear |OP|
Could you please let me know what audio settings you are using? I get a picture that is good enough, but the audio is *noisy* to say the least.
Rgds,
NorTor
For just 'Audio Files', I have the Audio bitrate set to 128, 'Fake video' unchecked, and 'Keep stream open' unchecked. I haven't used that very often, so I can't vouch for the quality.
But under 'Video Files', I have the 'Audio bitrate' set to 96, and 'Synchronize on audio' checked. It sounds pretty good to me.
These are both under 'Stream rtsp' in settings, not the 'Stream http', as I don't use the HTTP streaming at all.

Thank you so much for this. I have been looking everywhere and this is exactly what I was looking for. I wish I knew about VLC's streaming capabilities a long time ago; I've been using VLC for years lol.
Now, I need to work out how to create a VLC library.
Hello,
I dont know if you find the right solution, but you can look at "vdr" and "vdr client for android". It is a server cient streaming solution.
my problem with vlc stream and convert it connects to my ubuntu 10.04 and vlc 1.0.6 and when I click stream via http the sound would come through and its perfect for streaming mp3. If I were to stream movies this way.. only the sound comes thru and not the video part.
If I were to stream through rtsp, the phone would stall on buffering.... and on the command line is
Code:
[0x8cd1568] main stream out error: socket bind error (Permission denied)
[0x8cd1568] main stream out error: cannot create socket(s) for HTTP host
[0x8cd1568] stream_out_rtp stream out error: cannot export SDP as RTSP
I tried posting to see if anyone could help but no replies yet. All share is great but its limited in the file types that it can play.. Have not found something that is similar to Air video as yet but if VLC stream and convert can be figured out that it would be just about perfect.
After some trial and error, I finally got vlc S&C to work properly on both WiFi and 3g. I have been able to watch good quality movies. It has been able to transcode all video formats I've thrown at it.
Although the dev states to use rtsp ports 554 or 5554, they only work on WiFi for me. I think the stream is trying to use a variable port selection and I am not opening my router for all ports. Also, my home ISP (Comcast) blocks certain ports (including 554). For my rtsp port selection I use 8081 and it worked like a charm. hope this helps
I have heard good things about Homepipe.

DLNA

Hello! I have a twonky server at home. When I open the sony dlna app on the tablet my server is listed and I can Browse all the content of the media server. The problem is when I try to see photos (jpg format) they are all marked with a yellow triangle with an exclamation inside, and when I click on the photo I receive a message saying "this device can't play this content". So the only media I can play are my collection of mp3 that plays without problems.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
I'm gonna answer myself in case of someone has the same issue. I think the sony dlna app has some kind of resolution/Mb limit. Most of my photos have a resolution about 5 to 12 Megapixels that can't be viewed, but some photos with a low resolution are displayed without problems.
Same here!
Also have the same problem. It seems that any pic above 1 Mb or so will not be shown. I don't always have the yellow triangle, I just have a black screen with some grey icon.
Also tried almost all other dlna apps from the market but then my problem is that no single app will recognize my Iomega NAS
Anyone any ideas?
any progress on this one? No DLNA apps in the market?
Well, I've been trying Eminent DLNA and HomeDia. Although I didn't had much time to play with them, apparently both do their job, the choice is a matter of personal taste.

Skifta works for everything and is free but a bit slow during first start up . BubbleUpnp works for videos and music but its free version is limited. For all video formats support install mx video player and the tegra codecs of it.

You can try ArkMC application https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.arkudadigital.arkmc.gm, it works with pictuers as well. To check it - try Free Version at first.
Pixel Media has both client and server DLNA apps. Both are free. Work like a charm.

NFC in P760 but not in P765?
A question comes in my mind, why did they give NFC on P760 and not on P765??? Well all hardware is same, except camera and NFC. Even the kdz can be flashed on each other.
Have someone flashed any kdz for P760 on P765 and test NFC? Nothing wrong in trying. What if it works on P765 too. lolz

There is one lenovo android phone which can stream video of Games to DLNA device. Dont have details at the moment, you can search in google and especially in YouTube.
I dont have much information about L9 but technically there should be a Driver Application which should stream the display of Games on TV via DLNA. It is also possible that some applications DLNA SERVER (http://www.appszoom.com/android_applications/dlna) may help you in this case. Google it.
Eh, few questions:
1. For remote control, I use VLC Remote (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.peterbaldwin.client.android.vlcremote), is there any differences other than playing files ON your phone? Which leads to the 2nd question anyways.
1. Why do you store video files on your mobile ? All my video files are either rips (stored on PC, few GBs each) or my captures which are uploaded to G+ immediately, and I can access from any where. And to access these file, I use Emit, uPnP or SplashTop.
I never used DLNA before, so pardon me for my lack of knowledge.

DLNA is only a wireless streaming of media files. Rest how you use it is your wish. It is not always necessary that I will stream it to my PC/TV at home. Suppose I am visiting my friend, relative, office, anywhere, etc. and I wish to share my KARAOKE video, where I am really singing well, I can easily stream it to the TV on large screen and hey!! Everyone (hundreds of them) can watch it and appreciate it. Most of us show Home/Picnic Photos, Videos, etc to friends on mobile itself wherever they go. What if DLNA allows you to share it on BIG screen. And yes, DLNA does not need to copy your files on recipient device, its just a SlideShow.
Well if you dont share your music, photos and videos, with your friends/relatives/office pals, THEN DLNA IS USELESS FOR YOU. YOU MAY SAFELY FORGET IT. Lol
EDIT: In my city I noticed all BlueRay Players from branded companies, are DLNA-certified.

This is where the part "my captures which are uploaded to G+ immediately, and I can access from any where" come in handy . I assume you know about Google Plus automatic upload feature, it is good for back up and SHARING as well :highfive:. Of course, not every smart TV can show music, photos or videos from google plus, or not everyone (your friends/relatives/office pals) might know about G+ I guess.

Re: How to use DLNA and use L9 as Media Server and Remote Control of your PC?
Another way to control your PC with your L9 is to use Unified Remote. It doesn't have a live preview of the screen, but you can use the touch screen as a touch pad, and bring up the on screen keyboard of the phone to type on the PC. There are also remotes for media keys, WMP, VLC, YouTube and a few more. You can get it on the play store.

Another way to control your PC with your L9 is to use Unified Remote. Would be nicer if it could directly stream from phone to tv. My tv can already stream from nas without phone, so this wouldn't make sense.....

Best Chromecast app for android

Hey guys, i'm looking for best android apps to stream videos to chromecast. The problem is that most of them only support mp4 files. I found only one that supports all file formats, it transcodes the file on the fly on your phone and streams directly to chromecast. its called Megacast. Does anyone know anything similar?
Try using Plex... It's a paid app, but free from time to time in Amazon App Store
Megacast - Chromecast Video
This isn't strictly a Chromecast app, but rather than Android one that you'll need to download on your phone. Regardless of how you get it on your TV, through, Megacast is an excellent Chromecast player that has real-time transcoding support, allowing you to play files from your phone or tablet that aren't supported natively on your individual Chromecast device. This includes AVI, MKV, 3GP files and more. It can also automatically pre-load subtitles or let you add your own, making it one of the most flexible video streaming apps around
The Google Chromecast lets you display video, photos, pictures and other media content from supported apps on your big-screen TV, using your Android or iOS device as a remote control. You can also send content straight from a Chrome Web browser on your computer. There are hundreds of apps that take advantage of this unique technology, which Google calls "casting," to offer a new way to link.
Try BubbleUPnP
BubbleUPnP, many video + audio options, local transcoding, supports configurable subtitles and transcodes only when necessary.
Plex always transcodes when using subtlitles, always thanscodes if audio is Dolby/DTS to Stereo, and does not support AC3 passthrough as BubbleUPnP does.
Plex is a hog.
+1 for BubbleUPnP, amazing Android app. With a good media server running on the pc (like Serviio) you can stream everything to your Chromecast (transcoding is done by the pc).
Not a huge fan of BubbleUPnP, when I download something off ttorrent, its a roll of the dice of it will work with it. I'd have to say my go to is local cast. Worst is allcast
Allcast isnt bad. I mainly use it to stream Showbox
Plex by far.

Emby all the way. Its,s free, its for, its better than plex
BubbleUPnP also works with DLNA and transcoding on the fly. With a powerfull device is amaizing. Slow devices work with hickups. Waiting for a while for Mxplayer to chromecast but still no go.
