Does stock ROM support multi user account? - Huawei MediaPad M5 Questions & Answers

I am looking to buy a good tablet for family use. Not having multi account support is a deal breaker. I hope Huawei keeps this feature intact.

In case of the MediaPad M5 10.8 Pro I can tell you that it indeed supports MultiUser. I've successfully added my g-friend as a secondary user on my M5. Only drawback is, that in desktop mode it now is always showing notifications of the secondary user as well. Other than that all works as expected.

I wonder if Pro version is the only one that supports multi-user, while the standard version lacks it.
10.1" is too big for comfortable couch-use tough. Nonetheless, I will still look into it.
Thanks for your quick reply!

Mediapad M5 10.8 non-pro, supported multi user out of the box. Not sure about the 8" version though, hopefully someone can answer that for you.

That's good to hear! Really appreciate Huawei does not take away functionalities that are suppose to be available out of the box this time.
I once bought an M2 and it does not have multi-user support, which really disappoints me. After learning this lesson, I now learned to ask around before making big purchase.
Thanks for the info!

This is exactly what I wanted to know! Thanks, I now feel a lot more assured in buying M5.

Guys, I think you need to know this:
I bought M5 10.8 as well last week. Multi User Support is very important to us.
Yes this tablet offers multi-user support, but its crippled somehow. Lets say you add (to your main account which acts as Administrator) another user.
You will have 2 users overall:
1. Your main admin account, Mike
2. and the 2nd we just added, Monica
Everything works great as expected, yeah.
But lets say you reboot your Tablet and Monica wants to use it after reboot. Guess what, she can't!
Mike has to login first in order to switch to Monica. Whaaat?
Adding accounts is easy so I don't think I made a mistake here, but maybe I did. But this is the situation at the moment. This is unacceptable. So if I can't fix that, I'll have to return it.
If it isn't my mistake, who is to blame? Huawei or Google?
I know multi user worked correctly on our broken Lenovo Yoga tablet (Android 4 or 5).

Unfortunately M5 Lite 10.1 (BAH2-W19) has no Users menu... Looks like it needs voice module and contacts book

Yeah, bought a M5 Lite, and multi-users is not possible. Bummer.
It's a feature I have on my old Nexus 7, very disappointed.

Mediapad T5 10 doesn't support multiple users, neither. It's a shame when Android supports that since ages ago.

In the meantime there seems to be an update available so that the MediaPad M5 now can handle multiple users, am I right? Is it still the case, that the owner has to log in at least once after a reboot?

Yes adding an account is an easy task, but switching between them is a gamer.
Switch to another account from the desktop.
Tab the user icon in the status bar (upper right corner) to get the user panel.
Use another account at login.
Use the power button to open the starting screen, and tab the user icon in the upper right corner to show all users.
Use another login account after reboot.
Cancel the login screen with the 'back' key, to get to the starting screen and select the user as above.

I bought today the Asian? Indian version Huawei MEDIAPAD 5 AGS2-L09
I cant find any "add user options" in the settings, very much disappointed so before I return the product I just want to ensure that the feature may be supported with ROM update.

Mint App

Mint just updated their app for Honeycomb Tablets ( https://market.android.com/details?id=com.mint ) today.
I installed it. However, I'm not seeing access to any of the new features. Are Flyer / Evo View owners locked out of the tablet features for some reason?
I agree, just installed it after hearing that it had been updated for tablets...It looks the same as on my phone, doesn't even display in landscape... I haven't updated the app on my phone in months and it is version 1.17.361. The newly installed app on my view is the same. I don't remember where I read that the mint app had been updated for tablets, but I bet it was based on a press release that was premature.
---------- Post added at 07:32 AM ---------- Previous post was at 07:06 AM ----------
I just researched a bit more and there do seem to be examples and screen shots of new features/reviews so an updated app does exist. I just sent the developer an email explaining the issue. I'll post any response I get (beyond the automated response which I already received)

Thank you. It is good to know it's not just me. Thanks for contacting support.
Not surprisingly Mint support wasn't very helpful (though they did reply within 24 hours for what that's worth) Below is the full response I received:
"Dear Andrew,
Thank you for contacting Mint.com.
For Android, there are two separate apps for phone and tablet. Our phone app supports OS Gingerbread and up and the tablet app supports OS Honeycomb and up.
Please confirm your OS version. Have a good day!
Thank you,
Anne B.
Mint.com"
*sigh*
What the heck? That makes no sense.
When I search for Mint in the Android Market, even on the website (not on my Flyer), only one app shows up...?
Only version I see is the phone version also, on my View.
Got another reply from Mint support...
So here is the second reply (after I advised that support reread my email in my reply to them). I copied my original email below for reference. Support is still not understanding the real issue, which has to be related to aspect ratio and or pixel density (not screen size). but regardless its a no go. I am tempted to try getting the apk and side-loading just to see how it looks.
Hi Andrew,
Thanks for getting back. I apologize for my previous response.
Unfortunately, your device specification is not compatible on the Table app. The app requires an 8.9" or larger screen. The Mint Android tablet app is compatible with Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) and an XL Screen Size 8.9” or larger.

I have a recently acquired HTC View 7" tablet that has been updated to ANdroid v 3.2.1. I just installed the Mint app (which I have been using on my android phone for a long time) The android market recognizes my view as a honeycomb device, but I the version of the app that installed is the same as is running on my phone (1.17.361). Is there a newer version that should have installed with the tablet optimized layout? Any idea why I do not see the new features? I know of at least on other user with the same issue (posted on XDA flyer/view forums) Let me know if I can provide any additional info that might assist your addressing this issue. Thank you

Could be that they coded it for 1280x800 tablets...

Anyone have access to someone that owns a rooted 8.9" tablet?
FYI, I am having the same problem with my Samsung Galaxy Tab 7 Plus:
ANY Android app that have a tablet-optimized version in a single app (no 2 separate versions) will not show the tablet version when installed in my Samsung Galaxy Tab 7 Plus.
I tested this with most popular tablet-optimized apps, such as Mint and TripAdvisor and same problem. HOWEVER, in my friend's ASUS Transformer tablet, it work just fine.
I believe this have issue with the screen resolution, since my Samsung Galaxy Tab 7 Plus is 1024 x 600, and these apps does not recognise these resolutions and hence, just defaulted to the "phone" mode, judging by the response from Mint.
This is just a piss-poor planning on the Android OS design...
Ah, interesting. That's lame. Is there no way to force it? Perhaps with a pixel density changer?
It would be nice if I could get any version of Mint to work. It won't let me log into any of my accounts. Pageonce logs in with no problem.

I just updated the Mint app and finally it shows up properly as a "Tablet" app.
I think we are lucky that Mint was created by Intuit, a large company, so they probably notice the app is not working properly in non 10.1" tablet. I think this is more of the Android fragmentation issue and how apps are developed in Android.
I just started developing Android app and I have a hard time making sure the graphics in my app is showing up properly in different resolutions and dpi.

CloudOn

Hi friends
This app seems like a good document editor for MS office and pdf, the user interface looks decent and there are dropbox, Google drive integration.
I'm curious on trying this app, but my Tablet isn't eligible for the download due to region restrictions.
Could a kind soul grab the app for me on Google Play and post the apk here?

Works on my Transformer Prime in Belgium ^^
It's incredibly amazing, though also paaaaaaainfully slow... not the connection, just the interface. I'd mainly need this for Excel (haven't found an Android Office suite that does XY scatter plots!) but the sluggishness would need some getting used to on my otherwise very fluid device.
The interface is pretty annoying to get around in, since it's so cramped. Luckily my dock's touch pad can help with that. What's weird thuough, is that it doesn't recognize some physical keyboard-specific inputs, like arrow keys. You'd think they might have tested for that?

Could someone with a tablet upload the latest .apk
I got latest phone version through my old HTC Desire(Bravo) but when I install it on my Padfone 2(Which does not have official support for this app yet) it only enables the phone version of this app.
While the version posted up here enable the tablet mode but because they are to old it won't let me login. Giving me an error that these version of the app are to old and no longer supported.
If anyone is interested the phone .apk I can upload it.

Project treble support?

Hi!
Could someone please check whether the tablet supports project treble? It should, because it ships with Android 8, but you never know whether a manufacturer follows the rules or not.
There are currently two apps available in the Play Store which can check this. I would suggest the following, because it can also check for A/B system partitions, which makes updates easier:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kevintresuelo.treble
I have tried the app on my older tablet - the "uses in app purchases" is only there for a "Donate" menu item.
Why is treble relevant? If you look at the xda developer forums of the predecessor, the Mediapad M3, you can see that there is not a single custom ROM available for it, although TWRP is available:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/mediapad-m3/development
Since Huawei doesn't seem to care much about updates, having project treble would make it much easier to get custom ROMs in the future.
Thanks
Chris
@chris_g treble is supported but A/B updates not.
Thanks for the info. I have bought the 8.4 inch WiFi model now, and I can confirm what you write (treble yes, A/B no). It's a nice replacement for my old Nexus 7.

No, I`m quite happy with the Huawei stock ROM so far. You can get the Android app drawer if you don`t want all apps on the home screen, just search for "drawer" in the settings. And the Android button emulation via fingerprint scanner is great (tap = back, long tap = home, swipe = task list). Also it`s quite up to date, January 2018.
It`s more about future updates for me, when there will be no security updates.

Well most of us are still on EMUI 10 (10.0.0.206)
I'm not sure about other regions but I'm texting on behalf of VOG-L29 Huawei P30 Pro in South Africa.
I think that Emui 10.1 will come in June last week, or even during July. So, information on portals that Emui 10.1 came out for EU users are not correct. There are a few members who received 10.1 for testing purpose and presentation on Yt. Also there are reports that build 123 has bugs. So, I think we will wait security patch June 2020 with emui 10.1.

It was reported that 10.1 came out in Germany Spain and France. I've got it on mine, which is why I created the thread. Still you need to state that this is not correct, why? Screenshot attached, running 10.1 for 4 days, no test user.
I created the thread to see the experience of others. Indeed I've got bugs (see my post) but your statement is incorrect that 10.1 has not come out for EU users.
Maybe I'm wrong but there is some issue with mentioned build 123. Also, on Firmware Finder which use official Huawei server, there are no builds for 10.1, so Huawei obviously canceled test ota using HiCare or Support. That is the reason why noone here didnt report any about that build. Also, there is no dload or service rom for b123. But, lets see what will happen. I whish to be wrong but.... I have too much experiences with Emui releases.
Well, yes there's some issue. Not sure if it's test but it came via normal update. But quite some stuff is not working, multi window does though and it's fast. But no meetime, multi device panel etc. So maybe it was pulled after initial release

Great to hear. Are you able to go from a notification straight to a floating window app? Saw this on a video but it's also not working for me. Seems that at least three or four features don't work.
Noticed also that despite smart charging enabled, the phone hits 100% consistently even when charging shorter periods like in the morning from 40% upwards.

Well, your impression that the server which used by FF are the same like the Devices do, is wrong. Why? Because, if I use erecovery, I receive the same Version like I did through OTA. Same by usinge HiSuite on PC.
Means: Just because FF got no entry to the same servers like our devices on regular way do, it's no clue to think there's something wrong

Using that app i've shared and connecting using HiSuite, that app gets the OTA links update that are sent to your device from Huawei servers.
If i can get that links, i will do some test and if all went fine, i will be able to help all users update their devices to EMUI 10.1.

U're lucky that u got this update(probably from Orange), I didn't received it on Vodafone Romania...
Does some also has this weird notification theme error? Already had it on 10 and hoped they fix it. After multiple notifications are popping up and I pull down the notifications, some of the are turning white and translucent. I guess this has something to do with themes and dark mode, but it is occurring on every theme so far.

Multi window changed. Stay with XDA, for instance, then pick an app from your floating window dock and keep the divider pressed. The two windows jump into multi window. You can change the position by moving to top window down with its divider and vice versa. Doing this right now with XDA top and gallery at the bottom.
But multi window from the recent menu won't work. There you can start any app in floating window mode.
As for the rest, same for me ? seems like an incomplete update. Note that meetime will be limited initially but I'm in Germany which should have meetime.
I am on a German VOG-L29 but not in Germany
I am on 10.0.0.195
I was at Huawei Experience Store yesterday
They said for now its the latest and 10.1 will be pushed soon, maybe sooner to mine than to others because its German
If I check for updates its says up to date
is the Huawei Firmware Finder still working? I used it for gettin 0 day updates on EVA-L19 (P9)
I dont use Google on the phone, like to get a new experience with Huawei and EMUI only
how to remove Google Bloatware?
I found yesterday a free app that has a paid version for 3-4 bucks called Flaoting Apps, is that something that 10.1 have integrated called Multi Window?

I'm willing to throw some money at it if he can add the Poco F3 baseband to a pad 5 5g custom rom. Same chip set and specs basically.
I want calls and SMS to function. I want to ditch a phone and just have the Pad 5. My online banking is done via OTP (one-time pin). I can withdraw money cardless I just need my SMS to send me the pin.
Also money in and out of my account I'm sent an SMS.
I'll tip in $100 USD. Let's go.
The SMS (both sending and receiving msgs) works fine on mine (Pad 5 pro 5g). The voice call doesn't work at all. You can't even use a dialer for 'secret codes' for testing. I am currently on a GSI, but it was the same on MIUI. I am in the UK if it makes a difference.

I want calls and SMS to function. I want to ditch a phone and just have the Pad 5. My online banking is done via OTP (one-time pin). I can withdraw money cardless I just need my SMS to send me the pin.
Also money in and out of my account I'm sent an SMS.

If you're in the US you can set up a Google Voice account and send/receive SMS via Google Voice app or voice.google.com, this way you don't rely on cell service @ all...
Is there any news about Custom Roms?

Development seems to be dead.

Not at all, the miui interface and the google framework is integrated, i need a vanilla rom without such crap, then i can install manually the apk i need for my use.
I will strongly prefer to ditch MIUI if nothing else to greatly reduce the risk of irreversible hardbricks that seems to be fairly common with updates after the first year or so and very rare in case of custom ROMs if at all. Just today a new report mentioned MIUI 13 hardbricking Mi 11 Ultra, Mi 11, Mi 11 Lite 5G. MIUI is just garbage IMO anyway.

Go into developer menu and turn off Miui optimisation. Can sideload any apk once it's turned off.
I couldn't load any system apps and non store apks until I did.
MIUI is ok when you sort all the permissions out.

Miui is heavy, without this crap the os load 2 times more fast also, i prefer 100 times the standard aosp minimal but fast gui.
