I kind of thought that this would happen. I mean, this is their (Huawei's) first venture into the U.S. phone market. They could screw over their entire fan base, or just update the phone. They made the right move.
I wonder just how fugly Huawei L will be...

In this case, I'm less concerned about the phone being good without the update (it is) as I am about whether I should believe any announcement Huawei makes. Further, did they actually learn anything, or is it always going to take public pressure for them to do what they promise in the future? I've already purchased this phone, but their actions for the next year or so will dictate whether I purchase another Huawei product.

I agree, I couldn't have said it better myself and I own a Huawei Ascend Mate 2 as well. Its a nice phablet, but its only a 4 start $300 phablet with the Android updates, otherwise its really not worth it to me. Hopefully Huawei does update the HAM2 to Android 5.0.

I am not holding my breath. So many companies have promised vapourware for my earlier phones. It is just not worth it for them to update any phone. Why update when they could announce a new model? Phone turnover is the money maker for them. Hell I paid $199 for a unlocked phone that rocks, yes it has a two year old os, but it is stable, great battery, 4g LTE , lots of memory etc. I will get my moneys worth out of it. Hell I paid more for a Motorolattriupmh and used it till it died. One happy mate2 owner update or no!

The thing is, those other companies are probably bigger, are they not? They have more money for advertising etc., so they can rely on pumping out new phones. But Huawei doesn't have the reputation to do that, at least not in the US.
And if they change their minds about this update, they're going to get so much backlash AGAIN. I don't think they would want that.

Well from what I understand Huawei in China bigger than Samsung just not in USA , like someone else posted, be careful what you wish for, new version of any software is bound to be bug laden! I too would love the upgrade but...

I, for one, will let others be the early adopters of this upgrade, when and if it becomes available! If, after a few weeks, it seems stable and reliable, I might try it.
Won't really matter to me one bit. If it never gets an update, I'm keeping it.
4.3 is flat stable, and I'll take that over the newest OS any day.
I'm sure 5.0 will do nothing but improve the HAM2, but, I'm sure it will have to
be patched a few times to work out the inevitable bugs. Bless the ones that will
jump at the alpha, beta versions, leaks etc...but once it is released, I'll let you early
adopters play with it. This thing is my work device away from the office, and I don't
have time for FC's & reboots.

The changes implemented in KK really can make our great battery life even better and bring RAM utilization down, and implementing the ART run-time for Lollipop will make apps run faster (as much as 4x faster). Done.
We're getting a lot more than a fancy interface here.

Theoretically, everything you say is correct, and if it turns out to work that way in reality, I'll welcome the upgrade, when and if it comes. But I've been burned in the past by upgrades, so I'll be very happy to hold back while you go first and find out if there are any nasty surprises lurking behind that fancy interface.
I like what I've seen of Lollipop so far, but if it doesn't work well on this phone, I'll be perfectly content to stick with JellyBean and have a phone that actually works.

Hey all new user here.
I am thinking about picking up the Huawei Ascend Mate 2 on Friday. But I to am concerned about if we will actually see the 5.0 (or subsequent updates). It seems that there is a lack of CyanogenMod support for this device and or custom roms. What do you guys think? If we don't see the 5.0 update what do you think the availability of CM12 for this device will be?
Just trying to determine how big a gamble I am taking by grabbing this in regards to future support. Let me know your thoughts

If you want a device that WORKS, is STABLE, has an incredible battery life, then get the Mate2. If it never gets an update, it won't bother me.
For my use, unless a software program gets updated that will not work with the Mate2 as it stands now, or, adds features that I would use,
I'm quite happy with the performance as it stands now.
If you are of the type, that craves the latest OS, or hardware, then the Mate7 might be a better option, or, the OnePlus One, which is similar
in price.

Thanks p51d007. I don't necessarily need the latest OS. but I also don't want to miss out on new features being added to new versions of Android. But I think I am gonna go ahead and pick one up! thanks for the feedback

They actually said first half, not first quarter. Honestly I'll be shocked if it gets updated.
At this point, I don't even care about Huawei's Lollipop. I'm starting to doubt it will happen.

Won't matter. I'm sticking with what mine came with. It's fast & STABLE. Unless the time comes an app REQUIRES
5.x, I'm leaving mine alone. You know that if/when 5 is released, it will probably take a couple of updates to fix bugs that
will pop up, plus, Huawei, like any other device manufacturer wants people to buy new devices, so it is always in their best
interest, be it a manufacturer, carrier provider or whoever, to not push updates, but talk people into throwing away a 1 year
old device, and buying a new one. It's just business...not saying its right, but that is the way it is.

Not true actually. People won't buy from a manufacturer that doesn't release updates. Plain and simple as that. It's in their best interest to update to new version. If you watched what happened when they said they wouldn't release KitKat you would know that.

I'm starting to suspect this guy might be getting some sort of kickback from Huawei or something . He consistently pops up in any thread about updates to quickly disregard it and sing the praises of the current build. He always throws that little hint of doubt that the new build might be buggy and won't be as stable or good as it currently is. It's just a little fishy.

I don't think Huawei would endorse what he just said, nor would they be likely to give him any sort of kickback for saying it! Seriously, read it again and ask yourself if that's really likely.
He's a bit of a missionary, but what has he said that isn't true? Does anyone seriously think that new builds are not often buggy? As someone who moved to Huawei and the Mate 2 because of dissatisfaction with the bugginess of KitKat on the Nexus 4, I'm in agreement with him. When and IF Huawei releases Lollipop for this phone, I'll let the eager early adopters dive in first while I wait until (and if) it's been shown to be stable and reliable before I'll consider installing it.
Clearly the part of manufactures niy releasing updates is good for them. As my post clearly states. Customers do not buy from manufactures that don't update their products.
Every device has bugs. Feel free to run a logcat and see for yourself. The goal is to minimize them and eliminate the ones which are or could become a threat to the operating system.

He's just voicing his opinion. And what he says is obviously true. All Android releases have had bugs. Even iOS releases.

You may well be right about that, but I don't see a lot of evidence. Everyone of us with a Mate 2 bought a device from a manufacturer with a history of not providing updates. Either we did it knowingly, or we didn't bother to check.
One thing I haven't said, and I should, is that I do appreciate the adventurous users and developers who charge into unknown territory while those of us who are timid are holding back, waiting to find out just how bad the new bugs are this time. I certainly don't want to discourage anyone from trying the latest and the greatest, as long as they understand the risks.

I wish I was getting a kickback! I just am happy with the device being STABLE. On my old Note1, even though Samsung never officially supported anything past 4.1.2, I was happy with it because it was STABLE. There were threads on XDA with build after build of this rom or that rom with 4.4.x and they all had this or that issue. When I find a build that is flat stable, unless another build is as stable, and all of my apps and features are working, I LEAVE IT ALONE.
I work on machines and when I was in my 20's (now in my 50's) a manufacturer came out with some new software, that was on 12, 32 pin e-proms. I promptly went out that day and updated all of my customers machines, 14 of them, with 12 chips per machine. 2 days later, the manufacturer issued a recall, and I had to go out, tear them all down, load the old chips back into them, restore all the user information back into them. THAT was my earliest lesson in "if it ain't broke, DON'T fix it.

I guess my skepticism comes from your repeated insistence that the current build is so perfectly stable. It has it's fair share of bugs. The audio cutting out is a pretty common one that I've had to work through a couple times. Any time I have a Google Calendar reminder pop up, calendar crashes over and over again until I dismiss the reminder. It reboots randomly about once a week. Switching from portrait to landscape is slow and inconsistent at best. Let's not forget about that looping reboot that occurred during a random Amazon update a few months back (that did not affect any other phone). I had to do a factory reset because of that which is a major pain. Not to mention the bugs with Emo, which is just a hot mess of an Android skin, make it practically mandatory that you put a new launcher on it. This phone is the buggiest Android phone I've ever had. Its only saving grace is the ridiculous battery. I want an update to make it less buggy, and yet I keep seeing you drop into threads talking about how stable the phone is. Can you see why I might not trust that your intentions are on the up and up?

Thanks for this. It's a good reminder that we can have very different experiences with the same device. I haven't had these problems. If I did, I'm sure I'd be very eager for an update, or anything else that might offer hope of improvement.
Of course, there's no guarantee that an update will fix your problems. In my case, Lollipop did solve my problems with the Nexus 4. I could go back to that phone now, if I had to. But I like the Mate 2 (Jelly Bean notwithstanding) too much. Meanwhile, I see lots of Nexus 4 owners complaining of bugs in Lollipop and saying that KitKat was much better.
FWIW, I do experience a few bugs in Jelly Bean on the Mate 2. But the ones I have are minor and I've learned to deal with them. So, like p51d007, I regard it as a stable, working system. I understand your viewpoint much better now.

I have experienced/still experience these things. Every single thing in every single sentence here. Except for the Amazon app.
I only have a few issues. Since the update my camera screen focuses but the picture is blurry... it use to be the screen was blurry and the picture was good. I'd rather go back
I also think it might help with even better battery life, and also activate the "OK Google" hot-word from any screen....
That's about all my complaints. And I'm an early adopter so I'll give it a go when/if it ever comes out.

Yes, completely understandable. I suppose I "got lucky" and got one free of bugs. I do have one annoyance though.

If they are not going to update there phones they might as well leave the US market or just build cheap $99 phones.

They are working on a Nexus, as well as LG again (possible 2015 Nexus 5?). Huawei wants to expand to the west. The best way to do that would be in a Nexus phone, since most people cringe at the idea of Chinese software, as if their own government doesn't spy on them. And since the Mate 2 was supposed to be their break in America, it only makes sense to build good relations using it.
They aren't doing a great job, but at least they are trying. I didn't expect this phone to get any updates when I got it.
Huawei informed us last year that they'll be releasing Lollipop in the second quarter of 2015. 5 months and 3 days have already passed and if wasn't for a glimpse they provided some months ago, I would have found it difficult that our HAM2 will ever be updated.
I received my 1+1 about a month ago and tried Lollipop on it. I am not particularly impressed by Lollipop. I had to reinstall kitkat. Lollipop is over-simplified and has lots of white.
Clearly, Huawei is slow at deploying Lollipop. That is true. It sounds like you really don't care though. You seem to prefer KitKat. Not sure why you started this thread.

Huawei had promised to release Kitkat. They retracted. Then they promised Lollipop. Even though I'm not a Lollipop fan, it provides the option of having the latest android OS on your phone. So, there's no harm in that.

I got ya. I agree. I am still hopeful they release Lollipop soon. They aren't the best at this kind of stuff though. Their track record is fairly poor related to supporting existing devices. I think they are trying to be better, though. Time will tell.
Android L is meant to be released on the Asian Mate 2's on July 2nd. I think it is unlikely that it will be released for the US version before this, but if it doesn't come out for you guys on the 2nd July, I would contact Huawei and moan like Hell. Unfortunately I have seen NOTHING about a release date for the MT2-L03.
I asked them on Instagram and got the usual "Thank you, we don't know anything, we'll tell you something when nothing does everything." kind of comment.

The Asian HAM2 is a completely different phone internally, there is no reason to believe the development paths or release schedules would be in any way similar for both devices.
After over half a year of vague promises (and a worthless 'beta program' website) from Huawei USA I wouldn't expect an upgrade to Lollipop for the MT2-L03 - I honestly think they were just stringing everyone along and trying to quieten the uproar among HAM2 users that was happening at the time. I'm hoping I'm wrong, but I bet I'm not.
In the meantime I'm still trucking along on my HAM2, but I am looking at possible replacements. Most notably the new Alcatel Idol 3 looks really really impressive for the price.

I've got the latest and greatest lollipop on my nexus 7, I've also got a rooted samsung s3 that has a custom ROM on it. But I must say this phone
the mate 2 is by far my favorite, the battery life is unreal, love the big bright screen. It may not be the latest and greatest but for me it is a great phone.

I actually bought the 1+1 after reading rave reviews about it almost everywhere. I initially intended to keep the 1+1 and give my dad my HAM2. For some reason, the mate 2 was too good to give up. It has everything I want in a phone; large screen, very long battery life, fast, smooth transitions and most importantly it doesn't get hot like a stove. Anyway, at the end, I kept the HAM2 and gave my dad the 1+1. Seriously, I gave up the 1+1 with all its laudatory specs for the HAM2 and I have no regrets.
This phone's screen is too freaking big for me. I already have a tablet, don't need another one thanks. Unfortunately I can't afford to upgrade it right now so I'm stuck with it. And now Xposed broke so now I'm stuck with the ugly grey nav bar and enormous DPI. (EDIT: Nvm, I fixed that.) Seriously, why did Huawei artificially raise the DPI, the native 240 looks so much better than the stock 320, makes everything look much smaller and crisper and gives you more real estate.
I just want Lollipop. Then I'll see if it's worth keeping this phone or if I should make upgrading a priority.
At least the battery life is nice, but that's about all I can say is going for this phone, and I'm willing to bet in part that's because of the lower res (720p) screen.
I started a thread on the horrible MIUI forums to make XIaomi aware of how important it is for all of us that they release the kernel source. Bump it and come with input if you want to help:

Good luck you will need it. They almost never post it and when they do it is broken or incomplete. That's why developers won't buy their devices.

Custom Rom support for their earlier phones seems pretty good even if kernel source might not be totally complete. I have faith in the great devs and hope that xiaomi at least helps a little!

if OnePlus 3 comes with rumored specs/price ($301 in China) and kernel is available soon enough, it could be pretty interesting alternative...

CM is slowly becoming the os for developing countries. Most roms no longer even use their source for anything.
Also you have to remember you get what you pay for. And every one plus device has had issues. Then add in the fact that they do things that upset people like their sexist ad campaign.
Yes a few roms for it. That comes from people buying the device and brining it up. The main developers for the roms never own them themselves.
You have to remember. Developers don't really care about the price of the device. If it is worth it they will pay for it. I can't blame them. I have paid full price for every device I have ever owned and they were always 700+. Takes a bit of saving. But if it's worth it then it's not a big deal.

You mean by the manufacturers or by users? I don't know many besides oneplus that come with cyanogen

I didn't buy a N5x because of all the reports about buggy screens, peeling paint and overheating, and its was a $300+ nexus device by LG, besides didn't oneplus fix those issues?

In many countries import taxes make a $700 phone cost over $2000, and I heard from a dev in brazil that they can't even import cellphones at all which is why apple had to build a factory to make iphones there or else they couldn't access that market, and is a big one

If the new questionnaire is any indication because they asked a lot of questions about Daydream capability.Also, it takes, at least, 7 days to verify a rom with Google. So unless they already have a nougat rom cooked (maybe without daydream?), it's definitely slipping to February.

Yes, very disappointing if true! That nearly borders on false advertising, in fact. It would be a shame to buy a 'daydream ready' phone when in fact it is not daydream ready.

Eh...Long update. But at least the beta testing proves that they care about bug testing. THAT, I can get around.
At this rate, it seems like end of feb might be a possibility. I'm suspecting probably end of q1..

Yeah, Answered yes too. Hoping maybe they are looking for some rooted users to test updating from a rooted device or something. Ether way LOS looks like they will be releasing soon so not worried.
All you people complaining, wouldn't you rather wait longer for a bug free update? A lot of OEMs are having trouble with Nougat and if it takes them till March then so be it because I want MiFavor to be fixed.
All the people are complaining here, but hey Motorola also did this. The Moto Z Play was scheduled for Nougat update in December but latest updates point to a feb-march release. If you really want those updates so much buy a Pixel for twice the price.

Exactly. I don't get why people are acting like Nougat is the Holy Grail and they'll die if they don't get it.
Android has changed a lot. I remember the wait for Lollipop when the newest Android version was 4.x, and for a good reason: Lollipop changed a lot about Android, and I'd lay a claim that it changed more than the M->N update. I don't have a lot of hope that ZTE would give the Nougat on Axon 7 a top notch UI flow, but I do hope silly stuff get fixed (ie excessive background killing due to app battery consumption, big ugly "clear all" button that gets mistakenly pressed all the time). Daydream... I'm not sure. Depends on the headset and also more importantly, actual good games that get released on the platform.

I saw that story today, looked at the calendar and realized one big contributing factor: Chinese New Year is on Saturday. A billion people are currently taking trips to their home towns to celebrate for two weeks, then travel back to the city. Not much gets done for about three weeks around the holiday. Hopefully around the middle of February they'll be back to parse what the second round of beta testing brings up, in which case... maybe end of Feb, early March we'll get Nougat, if all goes smoothly.
I'm a little disappointed, but it's not a big deal for me. I'm pretty happy with the phone as is.
