Software updates on rooted stock? - LG G5 Questions & Answers

I had previously flashed my G5 to Lineage/Mokee to allow the phone to pickup software updates.... I don't actually mind the stock ROM, rooted and debloated, but I also want to pick up software updates (and I don't mind needing to re-run SuperSU after each update).
Any recommendations? OR should I just get onto Lineage/Mokee again?

I'm same as you.. Stock rooted.. I'm just going to update through LG Bridge when and if the time comes

I just download the update zip, upload on the phone and flash with TWRP. Then flash superSU (which is sitting on my SDcard anyway) and I'm good to go. 10 min. max.

@ebisa - that sounds like what I'm after, but where do you get the update.zip files?

well, I get them from here - the forum. Nice people upload them, lol. The last one I've got is this.
Do mind that I'm on H850 and this rom is for this variant of the G5 only.

[Q] LG G3 OTA Updates and Root?

So, I am getting an LG G3 tomorrow.
I already looked up how to downgrade it to 10B, root with Stump or Ioroot, and use Bump! to install TWRP. (Unless the software it comes with will be rootable, but I doubt it. If I am wrong, please let me know!) I obviously don't know everything there is to know, and may have missed some things.
Once I have it rooted.
I upgrade it via OTA keeping root with SuperSU's survival mode.
And it should stay rooted?
Then I use Bump! to flash TWRP into it, or can I do that before and update? I am just getting this phone and I really don't want to mess it up.
Downgrading and rooting it will be no issue, but I am unsure whether I use Bump! to install TWRP before or after updating it OTA.
Or if I should even update it at all and wait until developers say it's okay on the latest software as of Dec. 13th.
I checked around for a good thirty minutes and did not find a clear answer, I am hoping someone can directly clear this up.
I know updating a phone OTA while trying to keep root isn't the smartest thing to do, but if it works then I have the latest software and it's also a rooted device.
Also, the latest software I saw was 12D? Is that it, or is it 11C? I am confused on how the updates are (in the sense of which ones are out for this phone/coming out soon).
In simplicity/TL;DR:
(I did read about my issue, but could not find anything so I asked here!)
Once I downgrade to 10B and root my G3, is it safe to update OTA and keep root? (With SuperSU Survival Mode I'd assume.)
If so, should I flash TWRP with Bump! before or after the updates?
- If after, what should I do? Reflash completely back to 10B?
What is the latest released update for the G3 (Verizon - VS985)?
- Is there a new update coming soon?
Do the updates actually help the phone performance and fix issues without me doing anything to improve performance and fix issues myself?
Thanks!

Do the updates actually help the phone performance not really and fix issues other than lag im not sure what needs to be fixed without me doing anything to improve performance and fix issues myself? for the most part, you will need to tweek and mod yourself to improve performance and fix issues such as lag

One more thing...
When I am updating and another software update is released, I will have TWRP flashed.
Updating it will cause a bootloop.
How can I prevent that?
Using titanium backup (TiBU) or similar program, freeze the app called "System updates 1_...". For me this has worked, though some people seem to still have issues; I'm trying to figure out if it is a TiBU problem or if they have accidentally frozen the wrong thing.
Alternative is to go to /system/app and rename the two LGDMSClient files, add a .bak to the end of the names, then restart.
See this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=56061720
Copy the zip in the first post onto your phone. If you accidentally do get an ota after you have a custom recovery, tell twrp to Install that zip
file. It will flush the ota from your system, so you aren't such buying to recovery.

You DO know that you can downgrade back to 10b to root and bump, correct? Just use KDZ or TOT files.
That was one of the other things I researched before getting this phone. Luckily, it came with 10B, but I'm on 12b, rooted and bumped.
Yes thanks. Just preparing everything. I had LG usb driver issue, resolved now with latest from LG. Now downloading 10b TOT. Too many years getting comfortable rooting HTC 's lol.

I know the feeling. For the past 3 three years, I was on Motorola phones, so there was a lot of FXZ files and fastboot flashing for me. Switching to LG meant learning that all over again.
New Question
Here, if any of you know the answer.

That I don't know about, since the two tools to flash the TOT and KDZ files are windows based.
Not sure if you could get them to run via Wine or something, but that might be an option, but since it also requires all the drivers and such, I have no idea how/if that would work and wouldn't even know how to start to set that up.
On motorola phones, you could use the fastboot command line tool that comes with the Android SDK and drivers, so that was nice.
But to take the TOT and KDZ files and flash them under Linux, I have no idea.
I got my phone on 11b, and downgraded it.
Used the Stump root, and then I used Bump! to install TWRP.
Forgot to do the updates, oh well another day.
They're not that important., right?
It's often handy to update modem, to pick up any enhancements on the rf side, the sw that actually talks to the cell tower.
I also ended up updating to the 11c boot, and the 12b system. IMG. 12b system picks up Verizon's first VoLTE, what they call Advanced Calling 1.0.
I did the above by using autoprime's flash2xxx zip files, and the .IMG files.

Advanced calling does nothing for me because I believe it's an extra charge on your bill for it. Forget that!
AC 1.0 is no added charge. HD voice is billed the same as any other call. The video part of a video call gets booked against your data plan (I'm grandfathered Unlimited), and free if it goes over WiFi.

This is the second G3 I have purchased. I Suggest using one click root to root. Also stop and Phil's can be flashed using flashing. It seems easier to me dealing with image rather than zip. I've foremost roms and so far my experience has me favoring Bliss Pop. That is what I am running now and to be honest I think I'm going back to 10b. The customizations are nice but to me it's not worth the problems associated with L.P. My opinion Bliss Pop has the best handle on the problems and still too much for me. I'm going to give LP a few months for the developers fix all bugs. Verizon hasn't released LP yet and there is reason behind that other than being big bully carrier. Once again my opinion only. You picked a great phone that is for sure!

Well AT&T fnally pushed out the 4.4.4 update

This is merely a rumor. The ATT link is to the old May 2014 update.
Pay no attention.
The link to the att sight yes is for old 1.58 build, does not mean there isnt an update coming...as its being reported with a build number by more and more sights, could just be a rumour but it could also be rolling out.
Well, they finally released the update today. Finally have 4.4.4. On my m8. Now to wait for lollipop
Does anybody know where the OTAPkg file gets downloaded to? I'm trying to preserve the file and not have to download it again and again after a fail update. Thanks.
Edit: n/m found it, it's under the FUMO folder within the internal SD.
Please save a copy. We need it for a custom rom

I'm lost. I installed the 4.4.4 OTA, installed the latest CM12 nightly, and now I have no cell service nor options to select/enter an apn. Under apn it states "access point names not available for this user" HElP?!
ALSO, what custom roms can I run using this 4.4.4 OTA?!

I can't help you with CM12, but I just installed Viper One and it seems to work fine.
I updated to the 4.4.4 via OTA yesterday, and Viper installed without a hitch.
NB: Make a Nandroid Backup before flashing please.
Whats the best way to update my girlfriend's rooted M8? Currently running 4.4.2 rooted S-ON. Can she just take OTA and then will have to re-root?
I'm S-OFF on my phone so I haven't had to deal with this. Already updated my firmware months ago and have been running 4.4.4 roms.
Thanks!!
Downloading it now.
You'll have to re-flash stock recovery, take the OTA update, then restore twrp (or other custom recovery) and re-root.
Could someone help me with the OTA update. I'm on stock 4.4.2 rooted and s-off. I placed back all the at&t crap in systems and tried my best to restore everything back to stock even recovery. I'm still getting a red triangle approx like 1/4 the way during the update. What sucks is that I have to download the whole update file again and it's 800+megs versus the prior updates which were a lot smaller. It's just very time consuming and would like to find out the root of the issue is.
I've done so many mods on the phone like the HK mod and various other ones. I'm trying to think back now to see if there is anything else and now I'm stuck. I don't want to restore my stock nandroid cause I would have to install everything all over again which would suck big time. I uninstall the drivers for viper4android, xposed, and even reverted the host file back from adaway. I just feel like there might be something within the system files that isn't suppose to be there. I even got rid of the att boot logo and sound but I had restored that back to stock as well. Please help if you could. Thanks.
Also is there anyway to flash twrp without using a pc? I tried flashify but it doesn't seem to be working cause it would revert back to the fastboot no matter what.
Same situation here I think... stock rom (never changed it yet), rooted, unlocked, s-off. Downloaded OTA then realized I needed to flash original recovery back. Did that, now AT&T sw update is of course telling me to wait 24 hours to check again. Any way around that?

Yeah just manually change the date one day ahead and try it again. It might take a couple of secs for it to prompt that there is an update.
I just posted a pre-rooted ruu in the dev section.
Backup data in twrp to your ext sd. Flash ruu via sd card method. Flash twrp using the free app flashify. Reboot to twrp and restore data.
No pc required.
Just make sure you backup files on internal.

I noticed that flashify also will install CWM or Philz. Is your method specific to TWRP or can you use the others. The reason I ask is because I currently use Philz and would need that to restore my backup.

I don't think root changes are the issue; as typically it will fail before it even goes into recovery with a message that the system has been modified. It might just be a bad download.
Setting up your phone again is really not that bad a proposition; especially if you use Titanium to restore apps. And it will also restore your Xposed installer and modules. Using Titanium, I can easily be up and fully configured again in about a half hour after a factory reset or RUU. Although, of course this will depend on the amount of customization in settings, etc.
You might consider updating with the new RUU (relocking bootloader required if s-on). Not only will this bypass the OTA install issue you are having, but makes for a cleaner install. Yes, you will have to set the phone up again; and you will also need to backup any data on internal storage, as it will be wiped by RUU.

Z3v 5.1.1 Full Root

I was able to accomplish a Full Root on the latest OTA update on the phone.
Previously I was running Stock 4.4.4 KitKat with SuperSu and had issues with the OTA, since I had removed Apps.
I installed the Stock 4.4.4 ftf to the phone using the flashtool.
Then was successful in receiving the Prompt to update.
After Update, I installed. "Kingroot" for android. just google it. NOT KINGOROOT or any other.
After running kingroot, King User was installed.
In my experience, no other root method will achieve full root. I was not happy with using Kinguser, since i was a Supersu fan. But anytime I successfully removed kinguser, to swap for Supersu, I had lost partial root access, and could not uninstall apps. I could only Freeze.
I also tried Superuser, but only kinguser allowed me to fully uninstall bloatware, and other apps from the phone.
Just thought I would share.
Thanks, Iambedook. Every experience helps. Kingoroot got me into trouble once before in the past.
Can you flash back to 4.4 from 5.1.1?

I'd love to try this, but I'm kinda unwilling/aprehensious to take the chance with rooting apps. Can you confirm that you can use flashtool to revert back to 4.4? I just know Verizon would block such a thing in an update, they can be jerks. (like the moto razr maxx hd) Any insight is appreciated.

Yes, you can revert back to 4.4.4 through Flashtool. Doing so though, you will not have Advanced Calling or the refreshing Lollipop UI. Also, unless you do something about it, you will be promptly reminded all the time to update to 5.1.1.

Giga,
If I use this method to root 5.1.1., can I install dual recovery and Camera 2 and the FM tuner app? I'd also like the updated flashlight you put together but don't see that as a separate install. Should I wait or go ahead with this method for root?
Thanks, Pat

You may root, but I would advise against anything else. the Z5 Camera is most likely not compatible for our phones on 5.1.1, and neither is the FM Tuner. It's a whole lot I can't touch base on yet.

Just an FYI, after I needed to revert to 4.4.4. I was struggling to receive updates to get back to 5.1.1. I had to use the Flashtool, 3-5 times to get the correct update prompts to appear. If anyone else had similar issues when reverting back, let me know, but re flashing repeatedly worked for me.

Just scroll down to the z3v dev section.
I was actually able to flash the stock ftf coming 5.0.2. I had to flash it with default options the first time with it failing. I then found that I have to basically flash noting to clear the error on the phone by checking everything in exclude and the other exclude box where it shows its not displaying any files in the middle of the window.
Once that went through, I was able to upgrade from stock to .44 and then the the two updates for 5.1.1. After all that I reset to factory again to test on rooting the phone. I was too, able to obtain root with King Root. I was able to install zxrecovery and xposed with no problems. I'm actually used to King Root as I had to use it on the Verizon branded 7" tablet that didn't have any other possible methods previously. I also found that Busybox was slightly out of date (difference of 2.0) and installed to /sbin which wasn't too big of an issue.
Beyond that my phone seems to get pretty warm and typically complains about not charging even on a 2 Amp charger.

Thats why then. This is only for the Z3v the Verizon variant.
Hi there,
New to the forum. After several hours of reading and searching, I became bewildered enough to decide to register and post .
This thread looked promising. I'm currently on rooted 4.4.4 with this phone. I also have a custom recovery installed. Im trying to get to 5.1.1. As of right now, I assume my only option is to wait for a 5.1.1 ftf so that I can update, because the OTA updates won't work (phone reboots into the custom recovery and the update is interrupted).
Is there an easier way to get the OTA? Or am I stuck waiting for an ftf?
To be clear, my goal is to be on 5.1.1 with root. But at this point I don't think I can get to 5.1.1 at all.

B180 Update Arrived

ATT sent B180 down...
And of course, overnight, my phone tried to update - and is now stuck in a boot loop with TWRP.
Yay.
Hope everyone else is having a better day.
Rename
"/system/priv-app/DMClient/DMClient.apk"
by appending ".xxx" to the end using TWRP file manager.
Clear /cache partition.
Reboot and see if it works .

For those wondering about updating to B180.....
See this post and links in it for how we updated before if the phone was already unlocked bootloader/rooted (and for stock phones that can't OTA due to non-AT&T SIM) :
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=73488912&postcount=1818
reloaded 170 full version on and it worked fine. Need to clean it up, as it threw the bloat back on - but didn't lose anything. Unfortunately, between 2 jobs, and moving (working on new house now, move in a couple weeks, then work on old house to sell it) I'm not seeing much time in my future to play with it much.
Is B180 rootable?
I imagine like the other version so far, it should be.

Question: If I unlocked the bootloader and Rooted at B140 but went back to fully stock b150 and than Flashed b160 Stock can I OTA b170 and b180 or do I need to flash? I want to keep this stock since I can't use a few apps rooted.
I believe you will need to flash updates as nobody has been able to OTA after unlocking the bootloader.

I was able to update to b140 from b130 from a unlocked bootloader but that was from before I rooted.... It was before root was available.
Thanks for that detail. I wonder which partitions aside from the boot partition get modified after rooting that then breaks OTA from working.

I don't think there's any way to put your phone back to the state where an OTA will work - at least nothing we currently have on the XDA forums here that I've seen.
You could always try what you wrote below - I expect OTA will fail. If it fails, you could flash B180 - which I believe is unrooted from what I recall @clsA writing about his method to flash B180 in the B170/B180 thread by @madvane20 - but please double check on that before doing it since you want to be able to remain unrooted.

hi thanks for this advice buy my device does not have this directory or files. I am in the same boat on 170 slim and fast, got AT&T update and now in force reboot update and fail loop. i really want to find a way to make it stop force rebooting? surely something i can do in twrp terminal. any advice? but alas I might just have to reflash.
make sure u mount system in twrp that folder and file should be there and make sure to clear cache like the other post said

LG 997 16a Update

I haven't seen anything posted yet, but noticed that an update for the US997 was added yesterday (Nov 8) on lg-firmwares. I tried to see if I could get the update through LG Bridge, but it says I'm on the current version (15a). The update is still 7.X, and listed at 2.71G.
Has anyone successfully installed the update? If so, what is included in the update? TIA!
I just went to the LG Firmwares page https://lg-firmwares.com/lg-us997-firmwares/#firmwaresList and am downloading the 16a kdz. I'll flash it once it's downloaded. I'll reinstall twrp and root then I'll check out any differences.
Edit: The install went a little rough. I thought I wasn't going to be able to get twrp installed but I got it. Rerooted and all is well. It seems snappier. The camera seems faster too. But it's largely the same.

Updated security patch? I still couldn't update through LG Bridge, but will try again in a few days. OTAs haven't worked for me at all.

Yes.
Back up all your stuff first. You can use tibu or LG back up tool.
You'll have to reinstall twrp and reroot as well.
You should retain your unlocked bootloader.

Surprisingly I haven't rooted yet - I'm still completely stock. Will the LG Backup restore all of my data?

It should but I'm not 100% sure as I have never used it. I use tibu.
But if you have twrp you can back up data that way too.

The person isn't rooted so neither Titanium or TWRP will be of any use.
You can use ADB and use the backup command.
That will get you about as close as you can get. unfortunately, if a device isn't rooted, backup kind of sucks.
Finally got around to updating. I used LGUP and Uppercut to flash the kdz. I chose the upgrade option and it did not wipe my data. Can't really tell any difference so I'm not sure what the update was for.
Has anyone received this as an ota?

I haven't received an OTA since right after setting up my phone. I got 14a as OTA, but did 15a through LG Bridge and 16a through LGUP.
