Accessing files on a phone with a non-working screen - is the any way how? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I own a somewhat broken Xiaomi Redmi Note 4, and I desperately need to get the files inside it.
The short story is, a month into using my phone, and the housing bent on me; and around 5 months of using this, the ribbon cable of the LCD ripped since it was exposed all the time. The phone is still working, but obviously you can't control it. Before I have it repaired, I'd like to back up my entire internal storage first. However, since the screen won't detect anything, you can't set it up.
It's non-rooted, but I don't remember whether I unlocked the bootloader. I don't really know how to get it to recovery either, because you can't manually turn it off since it can't detect touches, and you know MIUI's turn off option (press and hold power button won't do the trick). Otherwise, you'll just have to drain the battery. When you charge it again, it'll automatically turn on and do a normal boot. Btw, it's still running the vanilla 7.0 ROM it came with.
I need to have everything backed up because the store I bought it in won't honor the warranty and want to charge me around $95 for parts replacement. Nice scam. Anyway, it'll take me some time to find a repair shop that has spare parts for this (since the housing is bent beyond repair as well). 'Til then, I really gonna need to re-obtain the files stuck in my phone. Thank you very much!

So if you connect it to a PC, you can't see any files? You might have to switch from "Charging this device" to "Transfer files" type of connection, even that is impossible? You don't see anything on the screen at all?

HD2 USB problems... Bad hardware or bad software?

This last weekend, my TMOUS HD2 started having problems charging. With the phone on, it will remain at the same charge level. With the screen off, it might trickle up a few percentage points over time, but nowhere near what it used to. If I charge while the phone is off I can get it fully charged.
What scares me is that the phone gets noticeably hotter on the back near the bottom while plugged in and the phone is on. (The battery does not get warm, the actual phone get warm.)
After the weekend I plugged it in to my computer and it would not get recognized. The usual prompt for Sync/Drive/Internet Sharing does not come up and the computer does not react like a USB device was connected. The charging light comes on, and the screen shows its charging, but the battery does not charge unless I turn off the phone.
I have tried several different cables, charger and computers with the same results. I even hard reset the phone. I have flashed my phone many times and I am currently using Energy Rom from July 7. I have also been testing the various Android builds.
My question is if this could be caused by software somehow, or is this most likely a hardware failure. I know that I have not hit nor bent the USB connector, just normal plug-in/unplug for normal usage. The plug is not loose, and wiggling it somewhat does not change anything.
Any other troubleshooting tips before I start flashing back to stock for warranty repair?
I put the phone into bootloader tricolor screen, then connected the USB. Still no reaction on computer nor on device. Looks like this is a hardware issue. If I cant connect via USB to a computer, will I be able to revert back to stock bootloader and ROM via SD Card?
Has anyone else have their USB port just go bad with normal use?
Try All Settings--->Conections--->Usb To PC--->UNCHECK Enable faster syncronization data...

Hi,
I think this is a solution for your problem:
(manila) settings tab -> menu -> all settings -> system -> power -> battery
Uncheck: "when phone is on, do not charge the battery when connected to a PC" checkbox.
I've just recently had the same problem myself..
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but you will probably find it is a hardware fault.
Not long ago I got home, plugged my phone in to charge and left it, thought nothing of it.. Came back 10min later to find it said it was 100% charged (from 15% left) thought it charged quick but thought nothing of it.
Sat down that night to test some more mods i had downloaded at work, only to find my HP netbook wouldn't see it. Tested on 2 different laptops, a PS3, 2 difrent chargers (one original, one 3rd party) nothing...
Sent it back through O2 store as it was still covered.
When it came back the report stated it had a board malfunction and that my IME had changed.
Sounds like you might have the same problem...
I think I traced it back to the office, I had to leave in a rush for a bus and unplugged it (from xp) without safely removing hardware.
(god i hope O2's tech guys don't recognize me here fessing )
I think it fried the connection.
I will point out that since they have returned my baby, she ain't working soo good. They updated my Rom ext but my GPS hasn't picked up a satellite since.
So back she goes....... Sigh.....
Hope this helps as I don't normally venture over in to the "Q&A" section of XDA but I'll keep an eye on this thread.
Good luck with your phone buddy, I know how it feels not to have it.. Limb missing....
DanijasDub and dzukela, thanks for the troubleshooting tips. tried both, but neither applied. I already had "Do Not Charge when connected..." unchecked, and unchecking "faster sync" didn't help.
I think i have to agree with snowblind2142 on it being bad hardware. The fact that the computer would not recognize the USB connection while the HD2 was in Tri-color mode convinced me that at least part of the USB components may be busted (also the overheating near the connector.) I'm going to need to try a warranty exchange.
Why is it that all these phone manufacturers had to standardize on such a flimsy connector?
They're just cheapskates..
Do anything to save a buck, just one of those things..
Hope your exchange/repair goes well, i was bricking it as i had a custom rom on for a while. Had to revert to stock rom before returning it.
What did make me laugh, when i went in to enquire how their return process works, I explained what was wrong with my phone, so he asked to look at it....
My heart sank when I realized... OH NO!! IM STILL ROCKING MY DUSK THEME!!!
So he's like WTF?!? smiled and told him no different to downloading a game or app..
No mention of it on the problem description when i got the receipt back
PHEW! close one, so make sure its same as you got it, I've heard some horror stories....
Good luck!
Speaking of that.....
What's the best way to revert back to stock.... Revert HSPL first or Rom to stock. I can't affort to brick it at this stage.
Plus, I need to so it all from SDCard, since my USB won't connect.

Well, all i could do was Rom to stock as didn't think you could revert HSPL by SDCard. Seemed to be fine. On the plus side its really easy to do via SDCard.
Sorry, really cant remember where i went through the walk through but if you Google it I'm sure you'll find it. My advice is be careful, I managed to borrow a stand alone battery charger so i still managed to charge mine as you need over 50% battery to flash or you WILL brick it.
I must admit I was a bit laid back about it at the time but I guess they might of picked up on it... I'm keeping mine stock rom till the bug's are ironed out.
Hope this helps..
Sad to hear that, hope you can exchange the device.
If you extract the leoimg.nbh from the official ROM and put it on the SD card root, then go into bootloader, it should ovewrite ROM, Radio and HSPL (at least it did for me).
So how do I extract the NBH from the official stock rom? Its an EXE file, which is supposed to self extract the files before flashing. The problem is that it first checks the phone connected by USB, which unfortunately I can't connect. Does anyone know where I can get the NBH file only from a stock ROM (TMOUSA) for flashing via SD Card?
Just download the offical ROM from the HTC site and use winrar to extract.
Never mind... I figured it out.
The Installshield for Stock RUU extracts the contents to the temp directory at the point where it asks to "Connect phone to USB". I just copied the file
"RUU_signed.nbh" to another directory, then renamed to LEOIMG.nbh. I am now waiting for my phone to charge so I can flash via SD Card.
Sorry buddy, have been at work..
Seems like youre gettiting there. Hope all goes well!
Good luck to you!
Success!!
To add closure to my saga, and reference for future searchers....
I was able to flash from SD card using the extracted NBH from the official TMOUSA 2.13 Rom update, renamed to LEOIMG.nbh.
The official NBH changes everything back to stock.... the ROM, Radio, SPL, and boot wallpapers (Oh how I hated the TMO stick together animated startup.)
I called for service. Once the rep heard that the phone was overheating when plugged in she offered the warranty exchange. Now waiting for it in the mail.
I hear that warranty exchanges are actually refurbished units. I hope I get a good one. I also now know how fragile the micro-usb and the charging electronics are. I dont want to do another exchange, so looks like I have to be careful when plugging in for sync or charge.

[Q] X10 Mini Switched Off, won't charge/repair

Hi all,
I've spent hours researching and nothing so just looking for new ideas.
The last few days I've been running official SE 2.1 and today it started force-closing many apps. I restarted the phone a few times and that didn't fix it. So I restarted again to go into recovery and switch ROM. The phone switched off and won't turn on. It said it had low battery life if that's a part of it. The phone will not switch on, it will not charge with any combination of with/without SD card, SIM card etc.
1. SEUS and PC Companion will not repair it, they don't see it.
2. Laptop/PS3 don't see the phone.
3. I left the phone connected via the wall-charger for over 2 hours at two seperate occasions uninterrupted an nothing.
4. The phone shows no LED. Not even the quick-flashing red LED when the battery is extremely low.
I searched every SE site where this is discussed and no help, I've tried everything. I emailed SE and they said it would be better to send it away. I note that they charge a fee if they can't fix it. (It's within warranty though) and my phone is unlocked, debranded and shows various mods typical of users' phones from this site and the warranty says if SE find user mods they phone will void warranty. It may not switch on and neither the network or SE may find the mods which may mean I get past OK, but besides that, is there anything I can do myself? Thanks.
REPAIRED MYSELF
After hours and hours of research and effort, 5 minutes after posting this thread I fixed my phone myself. I hope though that this will help others out there. As with everything like this, especially on this site, these are user mods and frequently delicate or dangerous - you do them at your own risk, and could destroy your device or warranty. If you haven't rooted/flashed many times or don't know what they are, you do not know enough to do this. I say this to protect you, trust me.
If you take off the back cover, above and to the left there are two RUBBER coverings. I used a pin to remove the LEFT cover. You see the power connector of the phone to the battery. Use the pin, carefully and at your own risk, to remove the white part by gently pulling back and up. It's stiff so try a few times. You see 3 wires connected to the white tab. I clean the white tab and metal connector with my finger, re-attached the white tab, you must do that firmly or it won't connect, try again and again. Try the power button on the phone when you have it connected to laptop/pc/etc. and you should see the the red LED gently indicating it's slowly returning to power.
That was a hardware issue it seems?
I really don't know...I've seen other's recommend giving your phone a jump-start with a battery and connector but I couldn't find a connector, and just tried cleaning it with my thumb (no obvious cleaning needed, but I tried) and it did the job...strange. I'm sure this info. will help the next person who gets lost. It'll save time and perhaps money. And us guys around here like to fix things ourselves anyway...

[Q] Another Bootloop thread - battery logo, weird kernel, etc

I know, I know, another bootloop thread. I've been reading dozens of them and I can't find my problem, please forgive me.
My wife's phone was stolen, and so we bought a used one from a stranger after seeing a listing on a local sales site (gumtree). Bad call - they demo'd it for us, but we didn't power it off and on before buying. After parting with cash, we find the phone won't boot unless it's plugged in to AC power (and not USB). All it does is loop grey/green battery logos over and over. Sometimes vibrating, sometimes not, but it would never break the loop, except to enter download mode, unless I connected it to AC power.
If I did boot it, I couldn't do some stuff, like enable USB debugging - it flat out wouldn't allow me to check that box. So I checked the kernel, and it seemed to have a weird kernel installed, so I thought it was time to just re-flash with the official firmware.
Well, first I wanted to try SlimROM, but I couldn't get to CWM Recovery (which was already installed) reliably, and on the rare instance where I could get it to come up, I couldn't navigate to extSD where the slim files were, nor mount USB storage (the PC wouldn't recognize it).
So I decided to try and re-flash to stock, using ODIN and the official samsung FW that worked well on my own GS2. This worked, after a fashion - I could get it to boot if I applied AC power, but things were badly broken. It'd reboot a minute or two after the setup began, and so I was forced to suspect either hardware failure or something that survived a complete wipe and flash.
So I thought kernel. The only one I had lying around that I knew worked was an old jeboo kernel. I flashed it with ODIN, and presto - it worked! The thing booted and stayed stable.
But I still have that accursed battery loop when the phone's off, the battery needs to be yanked to keep it actually powered down. And there are other bugs, like the screen comes on after you turn it off with the power button. Just once, but now it can't be powered down and ignored - you turn the screen off and wait to see if it comes back on and do it again.
And it's confused about charging - this morning it reported the AC adaptor was a USB charger, and this evening it thinks both USB and the AC adaptor are both AC (in the battery info settings screen).
And the only way to get it to boot reliably now is to remove the battery and plug it back in, at which point it boots as normal.
So, after all that long winded four-hours-of-tears-and-anger story, my question is this: What's the battery boot loop all about? Why does the screen flicker constantly when it's charging via AC? Why does it take -twenty seconds- to recognize it has been plugged in to power?
I can't install CWM, it won't enter recovery or boot successfully (no loop, just hangs on the yellow triangle screen). Before I start randomly applying new ROMs via odin, I'd like to find out more about my problem.
Please, can anyone shed light on this? I thought I knew what I was doing but I'm coming up empty here.
Sounds like the USB board/port (tho it might be worse than that; this is what I'd replace first). Relatively cheap/easy to replace; but you do need to check which board is currently in the phone & ensure you get the exact same as a replacement - there's 4 different boards, get the wrong one & you won't fix the problem/waste time & money.
Search for similar threads, there have been detailed threads in Q&A over the past few mths, those threads should have the info you need.
There's also a chance it might be as simple as the battery on the fritz, if you're able, try another one.
But definitely sounds like the USB board (hopefully for you) to me
Thanks for the suggestion. Certainly the flickering while charging issue and the delay to recognize the charger being plugged in point towards a USB board issue, but what I can't figure is the reluctance of the unit to boot without changing the kernel. Wouldn't the stock ROM via ODIN have included the stock kernel? Why does CWM cause the unit to lock up during boot?
Last night the thing stopped flickering on AC and recognized the charger cable instantly - is this a self-calibrating feature? (My research of a thousand similar threads seems to suggest a lot of battery issues correct themselves). For the record, the phone did come with a second 3rd-party battery, but neither it nor my own original GS2 battery make any difference.
So... Yeah, I'm still not sure if this is a hardware problem, software problem, or both.
Also last night I followed a suggestion from another thread and loaded up touchwiz, changed the screen timeout and switched back to apex launcher, and the screen started shutting off as desired. This morning it doesn't work anymore, and the phone is frequently found with the screen turned on. =/
Ok so by flashing full stock rom that practically eliminates the software side of things. Now do what mistahbungle said. My money is also on the usb board. I had to replace mine recently. Click the link on my signature, from there you can get onto a guide by keithross39 on how to DIY if you choose.

'practically eliminates' indeed. I still can't work out why I had to flash a new kernel to get it to boot. =/

Do you want help, or do you want to continue doing what you think will fix the problem? If you're having the same issues on full stock, it indicates hardware issue. The software won't work unless the hardware is functioning correctly. Let me think, what did MistahBungle say was the problem? Oh that's right. The USB board. Hardware.
Oh, sorry, I thought we were having a conversation. Should I not talk until I get the replacement part?
I'm not disagreeing, I'm fully prepared to accept the USB board is part or all of the problem, but I still wonder why etc etc.
OK....so....firstly, flashing a standard single file firmware won't fully wipe the previous software.....all it does is overwrite what it needs to (leaving who knows what untouched). The easiest way to regain a 'clean slate' is to flash a 3 part test firmware which DOES complete a full wipe during the flash..... @Hopper8 s guide provides a link to this test firmware and full instructions as to how to install it.
Secondly.....hardware faults can/do cause unexpected operational issues......some of the issues you describe were appearing on my wife's S2 before I replaced the USB board on her phone (they disappeared afterwards). As @Hopper8 has mentioned, his guide includes a link to my guide concerning the replacement of this part. I personally would hold off doing any more Odin flashes until you have replaced the board......if the USB port fails during a flash (because of a faulty board) you'll end up in a 'whole world of hurt' that will be infinitely worse than it is now.......

Thanks to both of you for the responses. I've taken the phone to a repair shop and they swapped out the USB board to no avail. =/
Given what you've already spent on it (cost of phone + replace USB board), if I were in your situaton, I'd be cutting my losses & put it down to experience rather than replacing the motherboard (with a 2nd hand board from a 'donor' phone), whilst that's nowhere near as expensive as paying a service centre to put a new board in, it's still likely to cost you >AUD$100. If you can get one for a lot cheaper than that, maybe it would be worthwhile.

Or...as first measurement, you clean the pins briefly and bend the holder slightly back to the center.

By 'holder' do you mean the USB port, or the connection inside the phone between the USB board and main board?
It's not a physical problem, at least in the USB port... I mean, we put a new one in it and nothing changed.

So the next step is either a motheboard replacement or the bin.
I realise this isn't what you want to hear, but think logically about it...You bought a 2nd hand phone from someone you don't know/had no idea what they'd put the phone through before you bought it, it crapped itself shortly after, giving no indications whatsoever the problems are firmware/software related, and showing a number of symptoms which indicate something major is wrong hardware-wise.
You tried the cheap/obvious & that didn't work, one way or another you need to bite the bullet (both options involve you spending a not insignificant amount of money in all likelihood, unless you can score a donor phone cheap).

Way ahead of you. Ordered a new (NEW this time) phone. Will be selling the S2 to the next guy, along with the caveat "Sometimes the screen comes on." Will lose a few bucks, but it'll go into the old logbook of lessons well and truly learned. ^_^
Thanks for your help.

No USB Connection Only Charging

So Ive had my Note 2 since release on VZW. I have my ups and downs and I have read numerous threads from different forums about this situation. I wanted to know if this starting to become the norm, which it shouldnt be.
So lately I have noticed that my phone when I connect it a charger that it will make the the sound that it is being connected a bunch of times. Sometimes it wont charge after that and I have to let it sit for about 10min - hr while connected to get it to charge again. Yesterday I was planning to unlock the bootloader again as I got bored of stock. So I plugged into my computer and all I got was the normal ding ding when connected and that was it. I walked away to make me a "samich" and get a beer knowing it was going to be about an hour or so to get it unlocked, TWRP installed, pick a rom, and setup. So I got to my computer and notice that the phone was usb charging but no notification on phone for MTP or PTP. So unplugged/replugged and nada, Still got the ding ding and charge indicator but no usb connection.
Today I came back to the computer and saw that computer recognize my phone with
**In my head, female robotic voice*
"How would you like to open your files"
So at least it recognize my phone. I disconnected/reconnected and still popped up on phone for MTP/PTP and on computer how would I like to open my files. I even jiggled the cable to thinking that the port may be broken/defective. I changed cables just to make sure that maybe the cables are bad
Samsung Stock White Cable
Moto X Cable
HTC One cable
Generic Cable from Amazon
All good. So Im wondering if maybe the port maybe dirty and just need some air in the port or can the port itself be going bad. I had honestly tried for about 2 hours last night trying to figure out what I did wrong or if anything changed.
While I was searching around I found a way to root my phone without using my computer as I had no way to connect at the time which was awesome
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2130276
Use Aragorn method, last selection. FYI
So has anyone else gone thru the above?
I mean pretty much right now my phone is fully operational and has full usb/charging functionality but I hate for this to happen if Im in ODIN or flashing something and it hits the fan and now have a paper weight. I have heard chatters that sometimes the the software might be the culprit as I am not seeing any kind of damage to the port that would indicate to be so.
Stock out of the box Software
OS: 4.1.2
Root only/Bootloader Locked
Confirmed via Odin and ADB that phone is recognize, trying to eliminate that it maybe a driver issue.
Checked Device Manager to see maybe driver maybe an issue but it did not even pick it up while connected at the time.
Threads I tried for troubleshooting;

http://forums.androidcentral.com/ve...alaxy-note-2-usb-pc-connection-problem-3.html
Would like to note too ( <--ehh get it, see what I did there, lol) that I did send my phone in for repair twice, the first for memory card and the second for cracked screen. When I got my phone back the second time I have notice that horrid "Verizon" logo on the on the home button was gone. So happy about it. The problem which was minor at the time was when I connected my earphones into the jack and was charging it at the same time I had some weird distortion. Still does it but but just learned to to listen to my phone while charging.....
So idk if maybe somewhere down the line in repairs did something go fubar but Ill see what happens this weekend.
So decided to open up my phone and see what the hell was going on and I dont know if what Im seeing is correct. I checked the the Usb chip and the chip is marked with
SPH-L900_SPR
REV 0.9 LF-A G
NF 1241 SY
To my knowledge, this is a Sprint part. Keep in mind that I recently got my phone back from Verizon, well Asurion, from repair due to cracked screen. Like I said before the home button does not have the Verizon logo. Just a white blank button. I dont know if they share parts and what not.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Galaxy-Note...e_Replacement_Parts_Tools&hash=item35c71596e0
The link above is the usb part I need for my phone but my question now is are these parts interchangeable like the screens or it is because its a Sprint Note 2 usb chip that Im having problems. I ordering the part as I cant claim insurance anymore until open enrollment in January. Hopefully this fixes the issue and maybe I can save myself the cash to have it serviced by a store.
I too gave up on trying to have my PC connect via USB.it only charges.I have 3 different computers and they only charge it. For transferring files I use air droid.

The problem Im having is I re-locked my bootloader and re flashed everything back to stock as I was following the insurance route to just get it fixed. But when I found out that I couldn't anymore then I went the other route to fix it myself. Now that I just want to unlock and start flashing away I cant because my computer wont read or register my phone. So Im waiting for the part to come in and do the repair myself. Easy fix in my opinion and will help out to get me to flash other roms. The only thing I was able to do is root the phone without my computer so at least I can play around with root apps.
Here is the fix, maybe it shud work for u guys

Galaxy S II Sudden Death?

Hi All,
I was using my phone normally about 2 days ago, then put it back into my loose shirt pocket. When I took it out a few minutes later, I realised that the phone was off. I turned it back on, and while it was on the "Samsung Galaxy S II" logo, I placed it back in my pocket to give it time to boot.
I kind forgot about it later, and when I took it out about half an hour later, I realised it was still on the same screen. Thinking that my phone has frozen, I tried to depress the power button for about 5-10 to shut it off, to no avail. I did a battery pull, replaced the battery but found that I was unable to boot the phone at all.
Thinking that maybe the battery is flat, I tried another 2 more original Samsung batteries that I had with me, both fully charged. Nothing worked. I even tried entering recovery and download modes to no avail. I also tried several other methods described in XDA including plugging in the battery while doing the keypress for download mode, both volume buttons while without a battery and sticking in a connected USB cable, and even my old USB jig. Nothing. No boot screen, nothing on the capacity buttons.
Oddly though, if I plugged in my battery and press and hold the power button for 5 seconds, then leave the phone aside for a while, I noticed that it gets warmer. If I pull the battery out, it cools down. So it seems like turning on the power does "something", but the phone wouldn't boot. Plugging it into to computer doesn't recognise it either. Neither can Odin 3 see it.
Is my phone truly dead? Or is there any possibility of fixing it?
Thanks.
Replace motherboard - Samsung service centre (expensive option), or source a 2nd hand board online & either replace yourself or pay a local mobile repair shop (not Samsung service centre) to do the replacement for you (cheaper option), or new phone.

So it sounds like a defective mainboard to you? Mm.. If so I'd probably go for the 2nd or third option. Already bought a new phone, but I do have 2 SIM cards (one issued at work without a phone) and I would like to be able to use my S2 (currently using and aging Motorola Q9H). Plus there's some data I had in the internal memory and the phone does have some sentimental value.
I'll go source for a board I guess... But the flash memory will be lost with a new board wouldn't it?
Thanks for the advice!
Given the majority of components that would cause a phone to simply die like that are located on the motherboard, that's the fix. As to what component(s) specifically died, nobody here could tell you that because we don't have the phone open in front of us with the gear to diagnose.
Some repairers in some countries have been flogging a 'we can just replace the individual component(s)' fix lately (as evidenced by people making threads here saying they've been offered these fixes), but this is a very tricky job that not even Samsung service centres attempt; basically, if you want it fixed guaranteed first time without the risk of potentially double paying (for the first fix that doesn't work), you replace the board.
Yes, you'll lose whatever data is in the NAND on the existing board, that's not really recoverable, but a company which specialises in recovery of data from dead HDD's may be able to help (I haven't seen a single thread on here in 2+ yrs where someone has been able to get this done though), expect this to be very expensive if it is possible.
I see...
Worth a shot I guess. Samsung's CSC aren't really an option here past warranty, and the professional recovery firms here charges sky-high rates. I'm looking at motherboard replacement guides for the i9100 for now, may look for a 3rd party repair shop if all else fails. Pity, it was a great little tool. I had it running on a smooth JellyBean 4.2.2 =\
I had this exact problem, what my case was that the battery died completely.
I bought a new 1800mah battery and it works fine. I can't boot with the original old one anymore, it is 100% dead (still has some juice in it)
but if you can't use other batteries (that work with the s2), then I guess your nand is dead.

Damn. I have 3 working batteries, one was in the phone. Two fully charged, none worked. =(
