the other day my phone feel of the couch while pluggd into the pc. it stopped chargibg and woukd not connext to pc.
i lost the original cable so ive been using a mini to micro usb adapter for an old cable i had for my g1 which hss worked perfectly.
thought i had broke the sockey on thr phone. had a tmobile shop check it with there cable. it was fine. so boyght a microusb cable.
everything seemed fine. charge light. usb drive worked internet tether. but then the phone ran out of battety while usb tethering. it always stays at 100% before.
with the battery low it woukf rrstart every minute whole plugged into original chargrr.
its charging but very slowly. 15% in 2 hours. checked battery pins. seems fine. i dkd manage to get 37% charge in 30 monutes once irh the phone off.
the phone doesnt even get warm while plugged in. it used to get pretty warm when cuargibg.
tried hard reset. trief reflashig rom. it knows wall charger is in. says charging orange charge light.. but it charges sooo slow...
im stuck. is this a repair jobk
Just got home and tried the new cable in my home PC. ive already lost 1% battery in the space of a few miutes usb tethering....
make sure you have the "don't charge the phone while connected via usb" unchecked. Other than that, sounds like a hardware problem.
i cant find that setting, only do not charge when the phone is on., which is off. Ive just noticed something else. the brightness setting for AC power effects the brigthness when connected to usb. I dont think it knows the difference between ac and usb anymore.

when you plug it into the wall, do you get the menu for: Activesync, Disk Drive, Internet Sharing? If so, then this is true. Really sounds like a hardware issue. I would take it back in and see if they can replace the port.
nope, when i plug it into the wall, no menu. it does seem to know the difference between usb and power. as using the option "when phone is on, do not charge when the pohone is connected to pc" has no effect with the wall charger.
I tried a different wall charger. I have a travel charger which is only rated at 500ma instead of 1amp and it charges the same. I was able to get 100% overnight. woke up after 8 hours to see the green light on, it stays at 100% with the wall charger as long as you leave it alone.
back into the computer, tethering and im loosing battery as if it wasnt connected.
Looks like ill have to dig out my insurance as its not a warranty repair (and also the water damage stickers are red, due to it being dropped in the toilete 3 months ago)
hmmm interesting. phone has been in charger overnight and was at 100% when i got up, pluigged into pc for usb tethering, despite battery dropping the green light is still on.
Ive done some searches on usb micro cables and came across people having problems with some data cables with charging, as some cables cannot cope with the large current required, but they mentioned that there phone would say this and i have seen that on my phone before with my front usb ports on my computer.
Im gonna order a microusb adabter as i have 2 high qualiity usb-mini usb cables from a G1 (which was usbed with an adapter with no problems) and 1 from a tmobile mda varia, same cable.
This has now been solved. After closer examination of the USB mini to micro adapter, it apeared that the 2 outside pins (which are for charging) had been flattened. Looking at the adapter, you could only see the 3 middle pins, but with a torch you could see that the oiutside pins were compelty flat. from droping the phone its oviously twisted the connector resultinin in flatting those pins.
I went back to tesco and bought the same USB kit which comes with a mini USB cable and several converters to fit different phones.
AFter hooking up the cable and micro usb adapter to my PC, my phone was within minutes showing increase in battery charge. After a few hours with usb tethering enabled and watching videos online im up 2-%.
The cable i bought for £7.99 which is micro usb though doesnt mention any HTC phones (mostly nokia) will connect perfectly for data transfer and the phone appears to say its charging. It looses power suggesting insuficient charge current. Maybe its the rom im using disables thsi warning as i have seen this before when i connected my phone to the front usb ports, but it works fine with the back.
So, it seems i have not damaged anything apart from the usb adapter i was using.
All is well, and im charging at a fast rate with USB while tethering.
Please close this trhead as it is resolved.
Final update. After several days i have been usb tethering and charging absolutly fine. Using 1amp charger charges fast!
Even from a dead battery can plug into usb and have the phone bootup.

Went to sleep last night with my Atrix plugged in as I normally have had all my phones, was playing with it right before I went to sleep and everything worked just fine, woke up this morning and the phone will not power on!
First tried to power it on unplugged and the green light flashed for 2 seconds, and nothing happened. Okay, weird, but I'll go with it. Plugged it in, and the green light stays on now until I press the power button! Once pressed, it flashes off, flashes on for 2 seconds and stays off. Nice. I thought the green light meant it was fully charged - when I woke up this morning, it had no green light on, but it was plugged in just fine all night - grabbed my Jawbone ERA and plugged it in to the charger I had the Atrix connected to and it started charging right away, so I know it works....
Pulled the battery, tried plugging it in and power it on without the battery. Nothing. Tried putting in the battery and plugging it in again to "jump start it" as I had done yesterday when I first got it - apparently you can't just charge the thing when connected to a laptop if the phone is off, it will power on even if you power it off again! Nothing.
What the hell happened in it's sleep? I KNOW rooting it didn't cause sleep death.... This thing doesn't have a custom ROM or any undervoltage adjustments, so why the hell is it acting up??? Damnit, right when I got EVERYTHING set up the way I wanted it too.... can't bring it in to the store and give it up with all my personal stuff on there now, I need this thing to power on to wipe it first!!! I'm leaving it connected to the laptop with the green light on for a while and will see what happens in an hour or so....
EDIT - just searched for and tried to hard reset the phone from this thread, the phone still won't even power on to get to the recovery screen!!!
UPDATE - see below and use the SUPPLIED Moto AC charger or at least one with over 5.0V - NOT a PC and NOT a USB hub!
use the charger that came with the phone. My old HTC ones won't charge the phone for some reason. I bet your battery is just dead.
Did you use the provided charger? I tried plugging my Atrix in to the charger I used for my N1, and found that it did not provide enough current. With the old charger, after the phone died, I had similar symptoms where the green light would flash but phone would not come on. Plugged it in with the Moto provided charger, and 5 minutes later all was good...
I had the same problem. Thought I was gonna have to take it back to the store. I don't know what the problem was but I took the battery out for 5 minutes. Then I plugged it into the wall charger(wouldn't work with PC). I didn't turn it on for 30 min, just left it on the charger. Then I hit the volume rocker and it showed the battery charging symbol which it didn't do before. And then I was able to power it on

Have been running around the house trying to find valid outlets, and that does indeed appear to be the problem. I found it out the hard way though, should have kept an eye on the thread - used a power outlet instead of a PC USB connection and the screen fired right up! Yes, the phone showed the battery with 0% in it, but at least the screen finally came on!
How I have my phone set up normally is connected to my charging valet on my dresser, connected with a 15 foot USB cable that plugs directly into my desktop. Since the extension is good for just one USB connection, I have that connected to a USB hub and then a MicroUSB cable connects my phone from there. The Captivate, and all the other phones I've ever used, not to mention my Zune and Jawbone ERA, all eat that up and have no issues since the USB hub is powered not by the computer (seven USB cables is just too many for a single PC connection) but by the power outlet in the charging valet. I wonder if the hub is distributing the power requirement for each device and the Atrix needs more than others.
I also figured out that the Moto charger has a 5.1V output on it, as does my Jawbone AC charger. Now I need to start making sure that my each one of my chargers in the cars I own has that same type amount of juice too! You go up 29% in battery capacity and so do the requirements to charge it, huh?

I used the charger in my bedroom that I've used for the Captivate and others before it and it didn't provide enough juice to charge the Atrix. It quickly switched between charging and not charging. I still had 40% battery showing when I woke up though which was nice. It had been off of charge since 10am yesterday.
Plugged it into an HTC charger and it's fine. The one that didn't work is not a modular charger so the power cord is hard wired to the plug.
Alright, a quick update.... Got the phone charged to 100% while it was off and plugged into the AC outlet with the Moto charger. Put my SIM card back in it - couldn't be without a phone all day! - and fired up the Atrix. Went to Battery Info to see what the status is and while plugged into my USB hub, it says
Battery Status: Discharging
Power plug: USB
....
Battery Voltage: 4124 mV (or 4.124V)

Why are POWERED USB hubs and PCs not strong enough to charge the phone? I tried ALL my outlets in my vehicles just now and they ALL show full battery status and plugged into AC! Who screwed this up????

Did you download the PC Charging Drivers that Motorola requires you to have in order to charge via PC and USB cable? If not, look here.

Wait, you have to have specific drivers on the PC so that the phone will allow a power cable (let's not even worry about it being a USB cable for a second) to charge the phone properly? I have the Motorola Media Link software installed, and that has a ton of drivers on it, that wasn't enough? MORE drivers are required to charge a cell phone? This is madness!
Sorry about the necromancy, but had this problem myself but it is NOT due to a lack of voltage. Thought I'd actually solve this, the problem is CURRENT.
USB2 ports will only ever supply 500ma which simply isn't enough to charge the atrix when it's dead. USB2 powered hubs won't supply any more than this either to meet the USB2 spec. The fact that the AC adapter works is because they tend to have a higher output current in the region of 1-2 amps (you may notice the phone, or any other device for that matter, charges faster with AC adapters for this reason).
On a similar note, cheap car chargers only output 500ma. I know with my desire I can have it plugged in and it charges, but if I use GPS it actually draws more current than it can charge at resulting in the battery draining (albeit, slowly).
So, make sure you have a higher current AC/Car charger, or alternatively, plug it into a USB3 port to charge as USB3 spec allows 900ma (some mobos output up to 1A) which is enough to charge the Atrix.

Not sure about this..... It's been about a year since I got all my USB3.0 gear, and I was super excited about it because I thought that my phone would charge ridiculously fast because of the added output, but I remember reading that 3.0 uses extra pins and those pins account for the added voltage and bandwidth of the cable - we don't have those extra pins when you step down from 3.0 to 2.0, so we lose the ability to charge devices faster as a result. I don't know if I actually proved that theory, but after I read up enough on it, I thought I just didn't have to with that knowledge..... again, correct me if I'm wrong, I've got a lot of 3.0 gear here!!!

There are indeed extra pins in the USB3 standard but these are to transmit data only. The original USB2 data pins are only there for legacy support and USB3 transmissions use the extra lines. There's still only the 1 VBUS pin which supplies the +5V power. There's also no harm in offering higher current on the connection as a device will only ever draw as much current as it needs until it tops out the supplier, not the other way round
EDIT: Another solution could be to use a splitter cable (common with 2.5" drives)so you can draw from 2 ports, but with a micro connector. I've never actually seen one with USB micro but a quick look on ebay says they do exist

Hi, can I know that when you plug it into the wall charger, is there any light on? Mine has no light on when plug to wall charger. But I can get the light green when plug into PC USB. Can you share that?

Is there any real fix to this issue i have search high and low and all i am seeing people talking about the battery id dead ... i have two battery that is fully charger and the phone still not coming up.
Hi all, sorry that im posting after two years ago but i am facing exactly the same problem, but i plugged it in my USB port, wich i think its a usb2, and i got the screen on but the cellphone did not say charging instead of that was connect your charger, and it was lower than 3% then it turned off. What can it be a solution??

I too have this same issue. My Atrix won't come on. I have 2 of the same phone. I tried the charger and cable from both phones. Neither work. When I first plug it it, the green light comes on for a few seconds then it goes out. I even opened the phone and removed the battery. Used a voltage tested and found my battery has 3.7 volts. Thats almost 100% charge. So it not a problem of power. I plugged the phone to my computer and same green light for a few seconds then gone. Won't do anything. No battery display or anything. I even did the simulated battery removal procedure. Didn't work. Is there anything else I can try? Can't get to recovery mode without display unless someone has a fix for that?

Just use a miniUSB cable and plug it into your computer. Any USB wall charger should work. I've used iPhone USB chragers with a miniUSB cable, Nikon camera chargers, as well as a Motorola one. You just need to plug it into any USB port either on a wall or on your computer. Leave the device off while it charges overnight.

Try it with a different miniUSB cable. If you don't have one handy, miniUSB cables go for pennies on Amazon or eBay. You can find them in retail stores for about 10 dollars or so as well. If the cable isn't the problem, then it is either a problem with the charge port on the device, or the battery. It's far cheaper to trouble shoot the cable, so let's just start with that.
Sound like the charger is insufficient power, even though it says 1A. Try charging from a computer USB port and see if it charges. HTC don't list TP2 as suitable for this charger.
I am also facing same problem. LED shows charging but phone does not charge. And when I insert charger "USB TO PC" page shows up, Like I have connected the phone to PC.

I just had an issue charging which turned out to be an easy fix.
The led would come on and the icon would show charging but it wasn't increasing the battery %. Then I would get a message about the power not being enough and to plug it into a charger. I tried several chargers and was getting the same thing happening. I blew a few puffs into the charging port which looked clean and it was still happening. I wiggled the cable/plug in the port and occassionally the charging light would go on and off. The charging led even started to go on and off with the phone just sitting still on my table. I feared that my charging port had gone bad so I ordered 2 spare batteries and battery charger from ebay for $10 (works well and battery life good).
While waiting for the ebay purchase to arrive I did some reading up and saw that pins could be bent etc. In my fustration I used a pair of tweezers to gently scrape the charging port pins/contacts (in a straight direction). Then I used an old toothbrush and firmly brushed out the usb port - a whole bunch of lint and stuff come out of the port even though it had previously looked clean.
I plugged in my charger and bingo! My charging issue was gone.

That was the biggest problem with MiniUSB was the width and height of those ports. It's a haven for stray dust and dirt. They need to be brushed out every so often, especially when you just drop it in you pocket.

I was facing the same charging problem and was looking for a solution. And i found this forum and read it and did the same thing and my problem is fix.. I can charge my mobile now. Thanks a lot for the great help.

All of these dumb charges, ie bricks in the wall, use the unused USB pins to communicate how much power they can provide. There are some resistors they put on the D-/D+ to say this is a 700ma charger or whatever. Trouble is that there are limited standards on these resistors so it's more than possible that a phone will charge but not enter high current charging when attached to a new brick in the wall. The cables however are more universal.
I've been having a charging issue for a month or so, I'm not sure what to think about it.
Let me explain quickly, that I don't like to fill my pockets with micro usb cables or AC chargers whenever I go out. As such, I usually just acquire a few extra chargers or usb cables and just leave them where I am most likely to need them. I'm sure this is common.
Charger 1 : Samsung AC charger, came with phone. Lives by my bed.
Charger 2 : Blackberry AC charger, acquired from work. Lives in kitchen.
USB 1 : $1 cable from Amazon. Lives in the car, plugged into 12vDC lighter to USB adapter.
USB 2 : $1 cable from Amazon. Lives on my desk at home. Plugged into PC.
USB 3: Blackberry cable. Found at work. Lives at office.
On to the problem.
Somehow, Charger 1, USB 1, USB 2 seem to drain my phone. If I plug in to charge overnight and power is at 45%, when I wake up, I'm at 12% or some other number. Battery App indicates that it has been "charging" I could unplug and replug the charger a few times and then monitor the charge level, if it drops, I unplug and replug again, reboot phone perhaps, it may or may not fix the problem. Problem has gotten worse and these no longer seem to charge phone.
Charger 2 seems to have worked more consistently, but not always. Seems to have gotten worse.
USB 3 is the only cable that consistently charges without problem. It is a blackberry branded cable, much lower gauge wires (read: thicker) than the cheap $1 cables from Amazon or the Samsung OEM charger.
I've tried charging with phone off, does not seem to make a difference.
I'm running Doc Masters v6, problem was also present in v5. Since issue is same with power off, I don't believe this is a ROM issue and have not tried Odin to stock.
Is this sign of the USB port going out? Anyone tried to replace/repair microUSB or have similar experience?
About the part about replacing a microUSB port, I had to do this because my connection was getting flaky, then I messed it up altogether. I sent my phone to MobileTechVideos and they sent it back to me with the port replaced.
I may try sending it to repair. Sounds like a pretty reasonable price and quick turnaround. Dunno if I can take going back to my G1 for a week while I wait though.
Provided I don't misplace the only USB cable that will charge my phone, I should be ok for a while.
Seems ever since I updated to the latest OTA update, if I plug my phone in on certain chargers I get a notification stating slow charging enabled please connect to your factory charger. Anyone else having this issue?

Same here. Glad to hear it is not just me. I just got off with NA HTC Tech Support. There official stance is that they do not recommend or support using any device other than the official charging cable and plug in device. They went as far to say that they do not support charging in the car. I just about flipped my lid on the phone.

I was told by Verizon that this was just a scare tactic, while HTC says I am not getting the right charge and they have no answer since they do not support DC charging in the car. Any info people have is appreciated. It works fine with Hard Wired DC -MicroUSB, but not with any USB Plug in.
Any apps that would help me measure the amount of charge it is getting?

So odd that they would do that, especially with the power draw of the phone. However you can charge using the battery packs?
My car adapter is a Macally USB car adapter model carusb10 output 5v/2.1 amp x1 500mA x2.
As for my house adapters the RCA 2 port USB wall adapter. 2.1 Amp x 1 or 1000mA x 2 I believe.

Everyone with a stock DNA unplug your charger and flip it around. As in flip the prongs. It should give you this message even with the HTC supplied one. Or try this. When you use another charger and it gives you that message unplug it and flip it. It should straighten out. I dunno. Something about the way the power is drawn.

Everyone with a stock DNA unplug your charger and flip it around. As in flip the prongs. It should give you this message even with the HTC supplied one. Or try this. When you use another charger and it gives you that message unplug it and flip it. It should straighten out. I dunno. Something about the way the power is drawn.

I have tried several different USB adaptors, from Razorfish(BestBuy), Belkin single USB input 2.1amp, innocell (RadioShack) dual SUB 3.1amp. Same problem on all.
On the other hand, any direct Wall connection with USB cable attached seems to work fine.
Also, I have the Motorola p4000 battery backup and when I plug that in, it also works fine and views it as AC.
Swapping the pins didn't work for me, same issue. Its a pita for me especially charging in the car because when using phone for navigation it charges so slow that it can't actually charge my phone and my battery decreases. I've went the route in the car I use my nexus 7 charger connected to an inverter.

From my phone conversation with Seth from HTC Support, the slow charging warning is due to the update because the update incorporates the faster charging feature that qualcomm & htc have referenced too recently (can't remember what its actually called). The phone has a new type of charging setup that makes it charge faster than some other phones.
Unfortunately some chargers (wall/car) dont supply enough voltage to activate the charging feature so while the phone does charge fine (it charges at standard phone charge rate) it cannot charge at the faster rate due to the charger.
He states that this will not harm the phone and ther phone will charge fine and it a normal time. You can disregard the warning. For those that like the faster charge rate, you have to use the right charger/cable.
Before the update our phones were mostly charging at the slower rate and that's why most didn't see a warning unless the cable being used was below the standard rate of charge.

Why are there so many problems about this thing lately even me, I experience this most of the time
When I use the Best Buy 2.1 amp wall charger I still get the message.
I'll need to find my oem wall charger.
So far every one I have gives this message.
I haven't seen this message at all on any of my charges but I haven't charged in the car yet. My battery usually lasts for more than the while day so I just charge at night.

Well with the faster charging enabled it does charge pretty quick especially using my nexus 7 wall adapter, even with my Nokia Qi pad. But man that last percent takes a while.
As of now I'm using supercharged hatka ROM slim 3.0.3 and getting good battery life. Even in the middle of nowhere where 75% percent of the time when I'm in the plant its searching for signal. I'll leave work after 8 hours and still be at 60%
Guess you can say its the only negative I have for the phone. Trust me the battery life is much better in the plant then my old bionic. I use to have to change the standard battery after 4 or 5 hours as it was completely dead.

Last night I received my daughters replacement Rezound from the warranty company. It came with a 1 amp wall charger.
I plugged it into my DNA and did not get the notice of slower charging and it charged quicker than I've ever seen it.
Too bad my 2.1 best buy one won't.
The quick charge capable chargers must output just slightly higher voltage to trigger the rapid charge mode.
I'll experiment some day and see.
This is a known issue. It all comes down to there being no set standard for USB charging. Android, apple, tablets, they all just seem to do their own thing.
The phone is checking the pins on the charger. If the data pins are shorted, then you get fast charging. If not, then it will default to the slower USB charging.
That last update that came through added that 'Slow Charge' warning. I saw it on my gf's DNA. My DNA is rooted and ROM'd so I don't have that. You can still check for the charging speed on a device by going to the Battery page in the settings. Up on top it with either say AC (which is fast) or USB (which is slow).
The supplied HTC wall chargers have the data pins shorted within them, so any regular USB cable will allow you to charge at the AC rate. You may remember some years ago there used to be Charging Only cables and they were regular USB cables that simply had the data pins shorted.
Most car chargers do not have data pins shorted. I have used a number of different ones from monoprice and none of them will charge at the AC rate.
There are videos on youtube showing how to open them up and solder the data pins. You can look for charging cables on amazon (but that seems lame), or you can find a car charger that just actually works.
There is a cheap Motorola charger on Amazon that will give you the fast AC charge.

I have the charger that came with the phone it it fully charges my DNA in 2 hours from 3%

I kinda figured it was something with the pins if I wasn't voltage offset.
I did find that one of my car chargers from best buy runs in quick charge. The cable I fixed, rather than using a usb cable in a slot on the charger.
The best number 2.1 amp wall charger uses a data type cable.
Maybe I'll check into shorting the pins on that sucker to get quick charge mode.

The phone is doing more than checking pins now. I have a 2.1 Amp dual charger with pins shorted and get the warning. It happily charged in AC mode before the update. The charger can also charge a nexus 10 at 2 Amps. I'm guessing the kernel devs will have to locate the source of the warning. I thought the resistance between the data pins might be the trigger, but there is no difference between the HTC charger and my dual charger. It does seem my car charger is unaffected.
I have found that to trick the phone into AC mode you have to short the the actual cable. Hence strip the insulation off the wires and short the data wires together. Has worked for me on all my chargers.

This message does not have to do with the update. I have still not updated my DNA and have been struggling with this for about 6 or 8 months. I am on 2.08. The issue has continually gotten worse since the first time I saw it. At first it would just appear about 1 in 10 times I plugged it in to a car charger. It then got to the point where it would only not show the message with a certain car charger. Now it is showing it on the one car charger that works, but if I mess around with it and unplug and replug it a few times it will finally charge normally. The last few days it has started showing the message on the OEM charger. I have cleaned out the port on the phone and cables quite a few times now, but it doesn't help. I found that doing that only helps if it gets really full of lint and the cable rocks in the port causing it to loose connection if you move it, but it does not change the slow charging message at all. The phone is also definitely not charging at full speed when that message is shown. If I have it plugged in and it shows that message my battery actually drains if the screen is on. With the screen off I only gain about 10% per hour. I am not sure where the issue is, but I think it is different in different circumstances. In my case I think it is the phone itself, but from what I have read about others experiences it seems their problem might be the charger/cord. I hope this gets sorted out soon.

It could be the charging equipment your phone or it could also be the power source not providing enough power to the device for it to charge fast so it charges slow.
