Urgent ! Redmi Note 4 storage suddenly disappeared - Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 Questions & Answers

Hello guys please help me,
I am using 64gb varient of RN4(snapdraggon)
Few hours back, I was transferring some videos from my device to my laptop via data cable,
then by mistake, I moved a 2.4gb planet of the ape movie to neighbor folder from the root folder.
as soon I realized I cancelled the task, but the window froze for 10 second.
after a while, I disconnected the device from my laptop
and now, my memory is gone
all apps are present, but the videos, audios and pictures are gone.
I opened the es explorer and device folders are nearlt neat as a newly formatted device.
also only 12gb is filled from the 56gb usable storage
kindly help, if there is any option to get back the folders
or please guide me to format my device.
device is out of warranty, so i cannot go to the service center.
thankyou

From what all you typed, I can make it out for sure that your files are in the internal storage, whilst invisible from both Windows Explorer and any Files app on Android. Check if you can access images from WhatsApp. If you can, make a quick backup online and reboot into TWRP to check the visibility of files. If you cannot recover any data, I'd suggest you to clean flash your device after clearing your Internal Storage with F2FS format to fix bad sectors. This would help you prevent any such errors in future.

is there any way to UNDO this operation?? I mean can we UNFORMATthe internal storage ???
really need your advices and solutions
thanks..
Yes solution is simple.
Go back in time.
Backup data like any sane person would have done.
If your files were that important why didnt you do simple things like make backups to your PC or even just via dropbox app that automatically uploads photo's via wifi?
Try a partition recovery software.
If you cant fix I have no sympathy since its easy to make backups of needed data. No excuse really.

I did give you expert advice. I am an expert in backing up my data in case of device problem or if I somehow decide to format my card.
As I said earlier try a partition recovery software.
Expert Advice:
Follow XDA rule #1 and use search. We have many topics about users formatting cards and then needing to recover data. This is a non-device specific topic so search whole site or even google.
Well you coud try Testdisk and Photorec
the site is cgsecurity
Or option 2 try recuva with deep scan enabled, also the option to scan for lost or damaged files should be turned on.

- Connect your phone trough USB cable and activate mass storage mode
- Depending on what files are lost (probably photos and videos), look for format recover software (Like recovery my files)
- Use it on mounted SD card
PS:
If you have used some part of your internal sd card after formatting, you probably lost some files forever, if you haven't yet, DON'T USE IT BEFORE RECOVERY !!

Give some app suggestions is fine. Once we have those, we know the key terms to search for.
I've tried cg-security apps, they're made for Windows/Linux/BSD etc, but won't install on android.
I tried aidfile installed on Windows but it won't detect the phone internal storage either.
I have all my photos.
I lost a database document that is 760mb. Most backupsoftware (Skydrive, Asus Webstorage, DropBox etc) won't upload it.
I sent the phone for warranty and they formatted my phone, and lost that document. I just need that back. It is in internal storage, there is no sd card on this android.
Try Recuva but don't get your hopes up. Not likely to work. If they've formatted the phone, it's gone. Android isn't like Windoze where 'files aren't really deleted'.
Edit - Also, beware of some (all ?) of the 'data recovery' apps on Google Play. Many (certainly the several I've tried) of the non-paid versions will go through their process of checking, and tell you that your file can be recovered, but you need to get the paid version of the app. You pay for the app, and then find they tell you the file recovers OK (funny about that, right ?) but is 'corrupted' (which is basically bull****, the file can't be recovered at all, but you paid for the app so they have to give you something, right ?) & useless. This scenario is highly likely in the case of a file like the one you're talking about if you do get suckered in by those apps.

You can't undo the formatted, but the data was not really gone, you still can use some data recovery tool to recover your photos.
You can try this guide about how to recover photos from Samsung Galaxy S II.
I recommend you backup your photos with Google Photos, it has 15GB free storage, I think it's enough for your 1 year's photos.

[Q] Moved Images from Phone to SD vanished

Hi guys, a colleague at work asked me to move photographs of her late father from phone memory to SD so she can take them to get printed. So I plugged the phone in via USB, cut the images (which I now regret not just copying) and pasted them in the DCIM folder on the SD card. Seemed to do the job. No errors or anything.
10 minutes later she returns, and tell me they have vanished. I just thought they wouldnt be showing in Gallery for some reason but when I plugged the phone in via USB the folder was completely empty. I am baffled and obviously feel awful about losing the photos.
I've tried an app called Rescan SD but to no avail. Anyone have any ideas on how I could get these back or why they disappeared in the first place?
Thanks
As to why they disappeared, that's anyone's guess. Try Recuva (Google it), might get them back (tell her to back stuff up in future if it's important as well).
Edit - Re: why they disappeared, seems after you cut them something caused the contents of the clipboard to be deleted outright. Normally in Windoze if you abort a cut/copy>paste, whatever it is you were trying to move stays put in its original location/is untouched. Obviously that didn't happen in this instance. Whether that was an outright Windoze barf or whether there was a transient issue with connectivity between the phone & PC that caused it to barf badly enough to 'lose the files in transit' perhaps, is open to conjecture.
Was it seen in the gallery before it vanished?
Its a file transfer issue. If you are connected with mtp mode, always copy the files to destination instead of cut feature. And if you copy a file from source-close the source- and then paste it in destination, the copy won't be successful.Source window has to be opened while the paste function is pressed. You can, however, cancel the window while its progressing.
If the files were seen in the SD card and then it vanished ,it might indicate that the card is faulty.Try any file recovery software ,the process time to recover files depends on your system config.
All the best.

Camera Folder Wiped out

Hi All,
the camera folder just wiped out after i was shooting a video, when i finished i went into the gallery to check the video and there was nothing but video and all other images and vids in the camera folder are gone.
other folders were intact only the camera folder, they are still taking place on my internal phone memory but they are not anywhere to be found. when i select all the folder to check the size it give me 4 gb, when i check the phone storage it says 7 gb used. the 3 gb are the files that i cannot see.
i tried to connect the phone to pc/diskdigger/hidden files/different gallery apps but nothing worked. hope any of u guys can help me out.
thanks in advance.
Sound like corrupt file table, backup your data and format internal storage.
If it happens again then your nand memory is probably dying.

[Q] Problems viewing CWM Backups on my PC and phone

Hey guys, I realise that I may not be on the correct forum for this and for that i apologise, however I am quite new to this website and don't know my way around.
Anyway, I have recently backed up my whole phone storage to SD card using CWM recovery as there was no option to backup to an internal device. I wanted to take the backup and move it to my computer but I have a HTC One m7 which has no SD card. This isn't normally a problem for me because all the files seem to show up on the internal storage when i look on my computer anyway however despite searching through all of the folders, I simply cant find. The backup is 5gb in total and I know that it has been made sucessfully because my available storage has decreased by 5GB but it simply can't be found. Even when i look at the file manager on my phone I can't see it. Even if I can't move it to my PC I atleast want to be able to delete it, will factory resetting the device remove root access aswell as everything else and will I have to start all over again to delete this hefty 5GB backup?
Thanks for reading

Unknown Internal storage/SD useage: what is the cause & fix?

My Device:
I am using a Galaxy S7 SM-G930F 32GB Exynos running IronMan-Rom V1.2.0 and have TWRP 3.0.2-4 and the phone is rooted.
The Issue:
Something is using 13.85GB on my internal SD/Storage (see attached screenshots) I discovered this yesterday lunch time and have since spent a few hours on here and other forums across the inter-webs trying to get to the bottom of the issue. To try and discount and head off any none relevant data/answers related o the issue below is a list of what I have done so far -
Its no app cache related, because wiping the delvic and data cache from TWRP did nothing to change the other storage figure.
I deleted every scrape of data from the internal Storage/SD manually and also wiped internal Storage/SD from TWRP and no effect.
Its not app related and I have checked all my app caches and the 10 largest don't account for a fraction of the 13.85GB.
Auto update in the Google play has always been set to disable since I installed the ROM, so it not caching anything
I type *#9900# and deleted the dev/cat log, and this made no difference.
I tried SD maid, It found 2GB which I removed, didn't effect the internal storage and just broke google play services causing to it to constantly FC - utterly pointless app.
I have tried several other SD tools (SD tools, OneTool, CCleaner and numbers our SD manager type apps from the playstore to name a few) to try and ascertain what exactly is using the space in the internal storage and nothing so far has shone any light on the subject.
I have manually rum TRIM via Lspeed app and that made no difference.
DiskUseage (see screenshot) is showing it as 'System Data', but I am unable to browse or select it - and it doesn't make any sense its called that either.
My knowledge of linux is limited, but I am wondering if the internal storage is an actual drive and not a symbolic link to another location, if that's the case where is the other location so I can see if I can clean out the phantom data from there.
Doing a factory reset does indeed remove the 'phantom' 13.85GB of data, but I absolutely do not see why this extreme measure has to be taken. There surely has to be a reasonable explanation and fix for this?! As I would prefer not to have to spend a chunk of my weekend setting up my bloody phone all over again due to have to factory reset.
So while doing another search on the playstore for tools to help me, I found a tool called 'Diskinfo' and this showed one of the mount names for the internal storage as /Data. I then reinstalled TotalCommander, did a properties check on that folder and found 17.GB of data in that folder. So am gonna painstakingly go through that folder to see if there is one that roughly matches the 13.85GB mentioned in the OP.
I then found the mysterious phantom data, it was all the files I have placed into 'privatemode' So as I now understand it (privateMode), instead of just encrypting the data where it was on the external SD card, it moves the data to the internal storage/SD card. So I will be looking for an alternative app to private mode.
Hey. I'm having that issue with a costumer. I would like to know how you erased and/or solve that problem. Thank You and very helpful info.
Eventually found file '0' using an app called SD Card Manager - Samsung Tab A Android 5. Removed 4gb of data. Excellent!
I seem to be having a similar issue on my s9, I've only had it since early February this year. My apps is only 10gb, and I have ~34gb of files that on there, yet my 60gb is nearly full
Can someone help me, please??
I have an Edge phone that has almost all of my Internal Storage gone!
I have 64.00 GB and 19.62GB is taken up by "Apps", how do I fix this??
I'm not using that many Apps, so I don't understand why this is happening....please help!
Ok so what if you are not using private mode? How do you remove this data without doing a hard reset? I can see it on my disk but can't get rid of it? I have never used private mode on my phone before, used CCleaner and there is still about 17 gigs worth of **** stuck on my phone.

Hello, i have the same problem. Have you been able to recovery/find that data from the privatemode? My brother's S7e is on some Note8 rom and i can't find anything 'private mode' in the Settings. He has 300mb free of 24gb and literally not a single picture on his Internal storage.

Just do a search in setting for 'private mode' and disable it, at some point your brother has enabled to password protect some files on the device.
More relevant info here - https://www.samsung.com/uk/support/mobile-devices/what-is-private-mode-and-how-do-i-use-it/
All this is happening to me and my private mode is off. I literally copied and pasted all of my files from my phone storage onto the computer to relief the size, again, plus the CClear app, and the dent released around 2gb.
12gb is used on a 32gb phone, removing everything it is at 29.2gb maxed out.
This is nuts...
I clear my phone out every couple of months. Images to keep on the computer, removing unnessisary things. Private mode has always been disabled... What do I need to do?
