HDR screen - not working properly on youtube - Xiaomi Mi 8 Guides, News, & Discussion

Hello, yesterday i tested my mi8 and a friend`s sony xz2(lcd).
On normal content mi8(with increased contrast) is better and vivid.
Then we decided to test youtube hdr content.
Sony`s LCD was much, much better. In fact i think normal content looks better on mi8 thant its "HDR" mode. Picture is not vivid, just bright( i think it is pushing increased contrast off)?
So, if mi8 is capable to produce better picture, how come HDR content looks so bad? Is it some kind of license lacking - like the Widevine L1?
He also tested vs galaxy s8 and the results were the same , so is this HDR just not working properly on AMOLED displays?

Wipe the phone and upgrade to Android P xiaomi.eu

Try to use YouTube Vanced & no need upgrade to Android P which is bull**** by the fella. FYI, the HDR Full Brightness is turned on by default.

I have Youtube vanced. I know it is pushing 100% brightness while playing hdr content.
This is the clip that we compared: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tO01J-M3g0U
The difference was so big on 23 second in the eyes
Looks like i am not the only one noticed the issue:
"Probably because of the Chinese firmware used on my smartphone (which doesn't have the Google App natively) I was unable in any way to view HDR content from the world's most popular video streaming platform. Let me explain: videos are played, YouTube signals the use of HDR content but the display remains faded and dull.
You'll notice the lack of color and brilliance by putting another smartphone with an HDR display next to it and playing the same video. Watching HDR10 test videos from the gallery or with VLC returned the desired results, no substantial problem with the video format therefore. "

Literally, the HDR is just a gimmick for the phones. If you want HDR10 then get the iPhone. FYI, the HDR can't even play properly on the PC, you expected too much with Android phones which are lacking behind.

It is not a gimmick. The diffrence is huge, just compare some phone with LCD and HDR with the mi8 on youtube.

At me YouTube Vanced didn't work on 8.8.30. Now on 8.9.13 HDR on YouTube works flawless. And btw there are no major bugs, pretty stable for me

Works very fine with YT Vanced on global 9.6.7

Yes the difference is substantial. MI8 does not have an excellent display. It is very good, but not on par with OLED ones on Apple and Galaxy.
That is fact. (They needed to save some money).

Guys, you are not reading.
On normal content like pictures:
mi8 > xz2
score 8:6
HDR from youtube
mi8 < xz2
score 3:9
In fact, it looks worse than non hdr content.

Yes, I have the same problem with my Mi 8
in fact I report this bug to miui support, and start my thread a while ago,
here u can read it and see picture comparison to my mother Samsung Galaxy A3 2016

I also get it on my Mi8 with MIUI 10.0.5.0, its really easy to see the difference, simply by going to the https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9nfNKowlA5k, and comparing it to the actual HDR file playing back on your device (via VLC etc), which you can download from the 4KMedia.org website at http://4kmedia.org/lg-new-york-hdr-uhd-4k-demo/
As already stated, the actual "non HDR" version on youtube looks better than the HDR. However downloading the file from the 4kmedia website, you get to see it in all its glory.

HDR was not working on my China 9.5. Updated to bêta 8.9.13 Xiaomi.eu, now working perfectly on YouTube.

Expect so much with mi8 price tag? Human are really hard to pleased.

Is your YouTube player filling the notch? Or is the notch area not utilized? Am on 8.9.7 beta but notch ain't filled

Yes it does. I'm on 8.9.20

Latest china dev still Youtube(vanced too) is not full screen including notch. But when i download pubg from china app store it is full screen+notch. So is it app dependent or rom dependent?

Not really. You can see the massive difference between what is on-screen and the thumbnail preview if you scroll through the video. Was the same for MIUI 9 and newly updated MIUI 10 as well.

Has there been any solution to this yet? So frustrated with the poor support and the laundry list of issues to fix just to get videos to playback properly in HDR and extended to the notch. I'm doubtful that Android Pie would fix all these issues.

Best ROM for Camera quality?

Hey guys, I just ordered the phone today and it'll be arriving in not more than a month or so.
I'm curious if Camera quality really is different depending on the ROM because of the libs, framework or IDK, enlighten me.
Question is in the title anyway, thank you!
Google camera HDR+ app on nougat roms. Pretty good HDR pics and great in low light.
someone took the app from google phones and made it usable with phones with snapdragon 820
https://www.xda-developers.com/google-camera-hdr-ported/
https://www.xda-developers.com/google-camera-hdr-customization-raw-support/
Heyyo, eh camera quality is kinda subjective... For me? I do prefer Nougat ROMs with the modified google camera as mentioned before.
There is one downside to Nougat ROMs though and that's the camera flash... Sadly the way LeEco implemented the flash via I2C doesn't work well with current nougat ROMs thus it isn't perfectly synched with the camera. So for dark photos with flash? Marshmallow ROMs are still better in that condition. I rarely take photos with flash so I'm not too concerned but just gonna mention it so you know too

I prefer the marshmallow baseds like smalleui because you can use HDR on front camera (makes a big difference at night).

Here's a bunch of photos I took with the Google camera mod with HDR+ set to auto as it tends to work best on auto for a balanced shutter speed and quality.
https://goo.gl/photos/zsxYdUGLJGbkBRD28
So yeah, thus far Nougat with the modded google camera works darn good.
Here's the version of it I'm using
https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=745425885120756004
Like I mentioned previously the only downside to Nougat camera quality is flash synchronization. It's not perfect as LeEco uses I2C and thus far the community developers sadly have not been able to mimic it in custom Nougat ROMs... Sadly LeEco will probably never release the source code for it...
If flash synchronization is extremely important to you? That would be the only reason I'd stick with a Marshmallow ROM.

Damn. Loving the quality of your pics dude. I don't use flash often so it's fine with me. Thanks for all these info and the link. Really helpful
The EUI versions still have a much superior focus but GCam has a incredible better quality on night photos. I swap betwen EUI and RR Nougat from time to time to test new versions for GCam.
Also on Nougat you can enable EIS on all cam apps

Do we have that on Official/Marshmallow based Custom ROMs? And do you have some apps that simulate [email protected] FPS?
AFAIK, no rom has 60 fps with 1080p, even the official MM roms.
In fact, I don't think you can record 60 fps in any resolution, even 720p and below. You do have slow-mo [email protected], looks a bit pixelated though.
P.S.: 4k and 1080p might have artefacts in official roms, noticed that when I got mine a week ago. It's a case of low video bitrate, if you bump up the bitrate (with 3rd party apps)- you can go all the way up to 100mb/s - there's no artefacts.

On the official MM roms, if you pointed the camera at the sky you could notice a lot of artefacts from the compression (low bitrate, around 20 mb/s). Bumping it up to 30 or 40 removed the artifacts

HDR10 No one talking.

So I have watched a quite a few YouTubers doing their camera tests, comparisons and I'm guessing most attended the Samsung unpacked event
However not one has tested HDR10, yes perhaps it's a non starter as well we don't have HDR10 certification on our devices, perhaps answered my own question/query.
But it would have been nice for those to give their opinion on its implementation and the difference it makes. We will all find out very soon, I'm just curious as this was a big mention at the unpacked event.

Wrong, those devices can record hdr videos

Over 4k video recording with modified Open Camera

Sorry if I'm posting this to the wrong place, but I just found out that the A8 can actually shoot video at the same resolution as pictures. I don't know if this has any side effects, but so far it does work!
OpenCamera actually removes resolutions above a certain level because a bug on the Nexus 6, but I built a custom version for the A8 (and other devices as well) that disables this feature.
I also enabled using the flash while using manual ISO and exposure, since it's also disabled because of a bug that doesn't exist on the A8.
Open Camera is not created by me, the official website for it is here!
I just modified it to do the stuff above.
So, steps to record in over 4k resolution:
Download and install the modified Open Camera attached (delete old one if installed)
Start the app and go to settings.
Enable Camera 2 API
Set the video resolution to whatever you want!
Voilla, you have a 4k capable phone camera!
Tested on AOSPExtended 6.5 on pie vendor, and HavocOS 2.7 on oreo vendor.
If for some reason this was already known then sorry, I didn't find anything regarding this.
Note: The apk is an unsigned, debug apk.
Source included in zip (because of license). It's pretty much just a few lines commented out, so I didn't bother using git.
EDIT:
IMPORTANT
As I found out (thanks tho Athaxis and Samsungoogle for bringing it up!) this "mod" doesn't properly work on OneUI based roms!
It does do something to an extent, but anything above 3264x2448 doesn't work. This is the highest you can go on OneUI.
Also (thanks to Samsungoogle for noticing this, again!) apparently the OneUI Samsung Gallery/Video viewer can't play videos created this way! You can use other video players though!
I don't know if it works on older Samsung ROMs or not, but it did work on treble, specifically AOSPExtended 6.5.
There I was able to use the full 16MP (4608x3456) resolution for videos!
Please let me know what ROM this mod works on!
Only one word: FENOMENALE (A8 2018)
Amazing job! Though I'm getting "failed to record" video at 4k resolution.
Wow this is great- however when I try to record at the hishest few resolutions, it says cannot record. It does at the 7.99mp one though. It's still much better than 1080p. Also this seems to be a Samsung issue but the Samsung gallery can't view it while Google photos can.

Thanks, and now that I tried it with an OneUI based ROM, I realized, it doesn't work with it, only the 7.99mp one. If you want even higher resolution recordings, it works better with treble gsis (at least I was able to record at the full resolution of the camera on AOSPExtended 6.5 GSI).
Thanks for the feedback tho, I wouldn't have realized this without you!
I'm adding this to the main thing.

I think it's locked at 30fps from the system or something as we don't have slo mo (which uses like 240fps) while other devices with same camera module and worse CPU (A40, A30) have it. It would be cool if there is a way to enable 60+FPS video thoush
I really hate this marketing strategy of companies limiting video capacity based on whatever parameters they use
Any phone released today has the processing power for recording 4K30 or [email protected], the Note 3 with the Ancient outdated Snapdragon 800 had it, why can't we?? Oh because we aren't using the top of the line S or Note... At least we can force 4K 30, but why not 60FPS? seems complete bs to me
Btw the Moto G6 has 60fps mode and the Moto G7 has both 4K30 and 1080/60, phones that are well behind the price level of most Samsung upper-tier A-series models

Yeah, I agree. Why should I 'upgrade' to an A40 as an example for 240fps slo motion video (doesn't have 60fps but I think that can be forced by a mod) when it's a downgrade in everything else. Same with software updates, instead of seeing specs the android companies just see what os it launched with and give it 2 or 3 more updates - for example the note Fe gets pie while s7 doesn't with same specs.
To me it's just one of Samsung's ways to get people to buy flagships as midrange devices are getting very good anyway when it comes to power.
For another example the ancient and slow iPhone 6 with 1gb ram can do 1080p 60 and 720 at 240fps. That is on the level of budget phone CPU power now, and yet it can do this?

I saw some posts here on xda about other devices that did not have 60fps and use Exynos, but I do not understand anything to develop.
Please, let's try saving this smartphone.

Yeah, its pretty clear Samsung's disabled it though as the A7 2018 gets it. I mean they aren't even giving us android 10 they hate this phone for some reason, just want us to upgrade to the A71 or something. Although it could be because of the fact this phone came with only 32gb storage (still regret that 64gb wasn't in my country) which would mean 60fps video would use a lot of that storage quickly

As title, what currently works best please?

For some reason none of the gcam I've tested face retouching doesn't work,if anyone of a version that does please let me know.thanks

Latest one I guess
Used to be a heavy user of gcam on my 7 pro. Even involved in testing of urnyx and arrnovas versions and testing of the official xml configs. But I must say I have come to barely use gcam on the 8 pro. The difference in the stock camera is absolutely massive. Color is more accurate, no more smudgy details, awb is better, no more exaggerated contrasts in greens, better skin tones. Only thing I find is that you need to tap and decrese exposures when faces are involved indoors. It still wants to boost the brightness if it detects face, which gives a too high ISO indoors and it kills details like hair etc. Guess it's preference, but I rather have some minor noise than no details.
I have some truly fantastic shots indoors of my kids in motion. Ofc you need to set shutter speed as with any camera if you dont want motion blur. But shutter lag is non existent.
Any Configs for the OP8Pro available yet?

Why do you really need to install a different camera? I mean I have one and I've used it once in the past 2 months. The reason being is the OnePlus 8 Pro camera takes phenomenal photos if you just know how to use it. For instance these pictures I'm posting below we're taking with the OnePlus 8 Pro original camera
Wanting a lesser camera would be like wanting to replace the 108 megapixel Samsung camera for a Gcam that cannot utilize 108 megapixels
@dgunn, nice photos!
for me, I installed GCam just to have a play around and see what the fuss is about. Have really used either much lately due to the whole #stayhomestaysafe situation with covid though
Gcam portrait and night mode is superior!

Stock OP camera app is phenomenal already, but I do think GCam is slightly better. Contrast and white balance is a bit better, colors are more true to life, night mode is way better (not that OP has a bad night mode), HDR is better, selfie camera is night and day better, sharpness is pretty much the same. Unfortunately I'm not aware of a way to enable 48mp shots, but honestly the 12mp photos you get are more than good enough.
With a magisk mod made for the 7 Pro, you can enable all 4 cameras to be used on the 8 Pro with GCam.
TL;DR: OP camera is great, but GCam is better. Most probably won't even notice much of a difference.
I'm very happy with OOS stock camera!
To me only the selfie is better in gcam. For the rest i prefer stock

Stock does a better job for me.
@CosMiiK how to Install that Magisk Mod? Is root needed for that?
is there an advantage for rooted users with gcam? Or is there no difference whether you're rooted or not?
@ArtVandelay2 looks like all lenses are useable with that Mod/root.
Can someone see if there stock camera zoom (3x zoom) has some issues?
Can you go into there Camera app and turn off Ultrashot HDR and Smart Content Detection and take a picture in 3x zoom mode and see if the image it comes out is normal to you or the same as what the viewfinder showed? Every photo I take it seems to overbrighten or the contrast is turned super high (even though the viewfinder looks fine).
It be nice if someone could help, i've been asking for the past 3 days ...
EDIT: FOUND THE FIX, seems to be EX kernel problem.

Seems to be a issue with all custom kernel even though theyve made no changes. Only way to fix it is by going to stock kernel.

Question Low-quality or blurry front camera

Hi, I notice that whenever I use my front camera, especially on messager. the quality is so low or blurry. Is anyone experiencing this?
Me too its even worse than my old oneplus 6 , I'm very disappointed
Same, I don't know why the GT 2 Pro has a really bad front cam. My old Xiaomi Mi 9T can do better do. The front cam of the GT 2 Pro has a very smudgy look which I don't know if it's because of the software or something else.
I recently got the phone and notice this too when taking pictures of items with lettering. It is not as sharp. My old Huawei P10 was better.
Is there anything to do about this? Would installing GCam improve this?

Yes, get another phone. Selfie camera is below average - in every review you can read this.

Yes, it will improve, but not significantly. It makes sense especially for the main camera.
all software related, the front sensor is actually amazing. I get amazing results using third party apps.

Free you can use open camera, it supports 4k on front camera and has camera2api support, and some gamma curves that helps a lot. But if you want amazing quality you can get mcpro24fps that supports 4k, 10bit color depth, HDR HGL profile recording, lots of gamma curves and gamuts, you can get front camera footage out of it that will make anyone think you using a professional camera if you know how to use them properly. Other option is motioncam pro that records full RAW DNG frames witch is crazy hi quality but very hard to use and extremely heavy to deal with. So my recommendation is mcpro24fps, and for photos gcam off course. If you don't use gcam in any android device you just crazy.
This video is from the front camera with mcpro24fps:
I can take a shot on full blow clear sky and sun tomorrow if you want to see the great dinamic range you can get
Wow, that is from the selfie lens? Amazing!!
mcpro24fps is in the google play store correct?
Is 8.4 the latest GCam? If so where is the best place to download the apk?

Yep, thats selfie camera, as I said.....amazing sensor but terrible Realme software.
Yes, mcpro24fps is on play store
For gcam go on the telegram realme gt2 pro gcam group you can find everything there.
Attaching here an example of the front camera dinamic range with proper software, not the stock camera blow out **** they provide.

I modified the AGC cam. The original source is: https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/dev-BigKaka/f/dl9/
Modification:
- Changed package name so Realme GT2 Pro exposes all lenses
- Added settings option which pops up if you long click on app icon on your launcher
If the app is crashing enter the settings via long click on app icon and change the Device Interface for all lenses. E.g. to "Pixel 2 XL (Taimen)".

Added base config. You need to unzip file before use.

Yeah, try doing the same in the stock camera , you gonna look like a nuclear bomb exploded, I really never even bother opening the stock camera app, it makes me mad to see a good sensor wasted with this Realme software. Just the fact that front camera is capped at 1080 for no reason drives me crazy already.
I think the app is worth every penny. The developers are also amazing, just a while ago there was no support for 10bit HDR on the app for the gt2 pro, I asked about it on the official app telegram group and in one week they added support

You need to buy the calibration tool and calibrate it yourself, there is no other way to fix it that I know
