"it's not allowed to upgrade to unofficial rom package" - Xiaomi Redmi 5 Questions & Answers

Hey guys.
I have a redmi 5 currently with miui 9.6.3.0 global and locked bootloader, I'm trying to update to miui 10 8.9.6 via updater (as I see, it can be done without unlocking the device), but i'm constantly having the same error as soon as I try to select the file on the updater ("it's not allowed to upgrade to unofficial rom package"). Is there anything I can do to update to miui 10?
Steps I did:
- Downloaded the rom via this thread (version 8.9.6)
- Put the rom in the internal storage of the phone (in the "downloaded_rom" folder)
- Selected on the updater app... got the error everytime.
Thanks.

Same for me. I think you'll have to wait for bootloader unlock to flash beta on rosy.

Wait for another update bro

No need to unlock bootloader. It's very simple
Just follow the instructions of this video

& boom, you are succeeded!!!

My Redmi 5 Plus is already unlocked and it gives me the same error..

"install update.zip signature verfication failed "while flashing twrp

Hi!
I just got my redmi note 2 and found the device full of chinese apps and the battery life was not what I expected. So I want to flash a new rom and a custom recovery. So I tried to flash TWRP 2.5.7 and I Followed these steps:
downloaded TWRP 2.5.7 and renamed it update.zip
Saved it to Internal Memory
Used the updater app, phone automatically went to the recovery mode
started flashing TWRP
but when The process reached 99% a error message read"update.zip signature verification failed"
I did a full wipe and did it all over again.Same error.also tried MI PC suite but it would'nt let me create a backup hence no flashing. So I am at my wits end here folks. Please help!!!!! And being new to MIUI doesn't help either
I am currently running on MIUI 7.0 stable (7.0.8.0)
SOS SOS!!!!!
You can't flash an unsigned zip file with updater/mi recovery.
MiPCSuite can't create Redmi Note 2 backups, it's a bug.
For install twrp recovery install an official developer rom (you can find it on http://en.miui.com). Now you have root access going into Security / Permissions / Root Permissions.
Install flashify, open it. It will say you haven't got root. Go in into Security / Permissions / Root Permissions and enable it.
Now flash the recovery.img file of TWRP with flashify as a Recovery image.

Thank You sir.I will definitely try this. I will let you know if this worked for me.
Also, can the official developer rom be flashed by the updater app? Or some other methods are required?

Never mind..I have flashed TWRP via fastboot mode. All is well now.Thank you

Unlocked unofficial , now permission granted to unlock official - what to do ?

I have Redmi Note 3 SD. I applied for official unlock while phone was on MIUI stable 8.0.6.0 (Lollipop) , but I did not wait for permission and I unlocked unofficial and I upgraded to MIUI stable 8.1.1.0 (Marshmallow). Safe TWRP is installed and phone is rooted .
What to do now ? Should I continue with official unlock ? Could it be done if phone is already unlocked (unofficial) ?
Does it change anything significant ? I think I would prefer to be officially unlocked , so the bootloader doesn't ever lock again , but I am not sure if I can or if I should proceed from actual state .
Thanks
PS - Just checked Mi Unlock status in settings and it says - This device is locked !!! . But in Fastboot says bootloader unlock : true !!!
I'm in the same position, and I've sometimes considered unlocking officially. But, for the most part, I am happy with my unofficial unlock and worried that the official process will not work immediately, so I haven't bothered to officially unlock yet.
This would be the proper procedure for doing so, I believe.
1. Take a full backup in TWRP and be sure to copy it to a PC or somewhere separate from the phone. Also copy any important files from internal storage to a PC or some external storage.
2. Flash the latest China development rom using Miflash. (This would relock your phone).
3. Boot and log in with your Mi Account. Check in with "find my phone" to make sure Xiaomi knows you are logged in on your phone with your account.
4. Unlock via the official method using the Mi Unlock Tool... and pray that it doesn't get stuck at 50%. (If it does. Do "find my phone again" and try again later... and again later... etc. Sometimes it reportedly takes days. This is why I haven't bothered to do this yet.)
5. After officially unlocking, you could theoretically restore your TWRP backup (probably avoid restoring any weird partitions other than system and data in case it screws up your bootloader).

I followed this guide - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PtoeZg6K-z4&feature=youtu.be
Update - I tried unlocking official without flashing dev rom and relocking the phone - of course it didn't work because MiFlash could see the bootloader already unlocked . I will not bother anymore to unlock official if actual state of phone is safe for further custom roms .
Just to make sure - can someone advise if I can flash xiaomi.eu roms from Safe TWRP without worries ? Do I need to flash Universal boot img patcher too after I flash rom ?

I went through same path. Now on LAOS 14.1 . You can flash .. but do take backup of all partitions. Also do try to find what your FP sensor is. You may end up in issue like this https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3543397
Scroll though my other posts for more info.
The problem with Settings crashing , I solved by flashing Radon kernel - also FP is working with this kernel .
It looks like this Redmi Note 3 is much more prone to brick than Redmi 3 I used before. I went through quite a few bricks and failed flashes while unlocking and upgrading to Marshmallow .
With Redmi 3 , which I bought unlocked from Greece , I never had a single problem flashing custom roms - never used fastboot, edl , myflash , just TWRP .
So - no need to flash universal boot img patcher or anything else after flashing custom rom ?

Most guides say that you need the latest dev rom in order to unlock.
If you want to try with merely re-locked bootloader on your current rom, I believe maybe you can re-lock in fastboot?
"fastboot oem lock"
?

Now device is unlocked. [ Flash Dev Rom only ]
I would like to know which Twrp to use , now I need to get back to Miui official global stable with custom recovery [ need OTA , Incremental updates ] & also if I flash radon kernel will I receive Incremental updates?
ZCX Twrp is recommended?

Finally switched from MIUI 7.1.1.0 Global stock > V9.2.1.0.LAIMIEK, next bootloader

Finally switched from MIUI 7.1.1.0 Global stock > V9.2.1.0.LAIMIEK, next bootloader
I glad i'm finally got rid of that MIUI 7.1 7.1.1.0 Global Stable stock rom!!!
There was no official upgrade, but here on XDA I saw many new roms & android versions.
But also for my wife : she still has many problems with that google play services error which returned many times!
We both have that nice designed Redmi 3 with good price/quality specifications, but the Chinese ****ed up with the locked bootloader & permission **** to ask online.
For a while I gave up, I was in the stage of miflash_unlock.exe said "Current account is not bound to this device"
But as the errors returned on my wife's phone, I continued in the search to solve this :
-First I installed Root_Xiaomi_Redmi3-ChoiMobile.Vn apk to root my Redmi 3 (although bootloader still locked by the crazy Chinese guys
-I tried to install TWRP recovery, it seemed to work, but at startup it was still the locked baked in old cwm recovery in Chinese.
-Then with XiaoMiFlash I flashed in EDL bootloader mode (not fastboot) this rom : Ido_xhdpi_global_images_V9.2.1.0.LAIMIEK_20180129.0000.00_5.1_global_0843a2170b
-Now i'm finally upgraded to Miui 9, but my Android is still the old 5.1 Lollipop but my phone is not rooted again.
-The "Root_Xiaomi_Redmi3-ChoiMobile.Vn.apk" hack doesn't work on this new rom to root it anymore, anyone knows how to root it now ?
-As i'm on the new rom new, I had the developer option (after tapping a few times on the android version), to bind my Xiaomi account to my device.
-Now i'm in the stage of waiting 72hrs to finally have an official unlocked bootloader.
So when bootloader is unlocked I can finally flash TWRP recovery to test & flash a recent rom here with higher android version (Oreo would probably be too new yet and yet in test fase, probably Nougat for the moment ?)
I have 2 questions :
-How can I root this newer MIUI 9 Rom, is there an APK that works yet ? (the RootGenius_en_2.2.6 doesn't work either)
-What if the official bootloader method still isn't unlocked within 72hrs, how can I do it unofficial ?
This was a crazy adventure, man, what a mess made by Xiaomi
Flash TWRP and flash MIUI.eu ROM. There is new MIUI 9.2 for "ido".
First off, Global Stable starts with 7.5 for our device.
The last question: Flash LineageOS 14.1.
Edit:
Just before the last question one:
If you're unlocked, Magisk or SuperSU should be enough.

[ROOT] Redmi note 9 pro max without TWRP

Pre-Requirements:
Supported for: Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro Max (Phoenixin) Indian variant only. The device should be running on stock ROM to apply the update. though the guide is universal for all Redmi Note 9 Pro Max phones but the links are for Indian variant only. DO NOT use on different ROM,, For other Varients use this guide but with specific ROM for your device variant.
Requires: A PC/Laptop and a USB cable. (use only the cable that came in box)
Charge: Keep your device charged more than 50%.
Steps :
1. Download MIUI V11.0.4.0.QJXINXM – Recovery ROM | OTA ROM (official link from xiaomi website for Indian varienat)
2. Mi Flash Tool – Download and Install it on your PC (required to unlock bootloader, which we will not discuss here)
3. Download ADB and Fastboot Tools on your computer
4. Download Xiaomi USB Drivers and install it on the PC
5. update or install the latest MIUI version on your Redmi Note 9 Pro Max (Phoenixin) successfully. Feel free to ask in the comments below for any queries. Current version at time of post is V11.0.4.0.QJXINXM (link above). Make sure the model of your phone and the installed firmware EXACTLY match what you're downloading. If they don't, it may not work correctly.
6. Install Magisk Manager (.apk) on your phone from the official Magisk repository.
7. Extract boot.img (about 132MB) from the official ROM zip you downloaded and transfer it to the phone. Click "install" in Magisk Manager and point it to boot.img. This should result in a patched magisk_patched.img (about 16MB - padding was removed), transfer this file to your computer. Ideally to the Mi Unlock folder where fastboot.exe is located.
8. Reboot your phone to fastboot recovery mode. Open a command prompt in the folder of the Mi Unlock tool and run
Code:
Code:
fastboot flash boot magisk_patched.img
This flashes the patched Magisk-enabled bootloader to your phone.
9. Reboot the phone and that's it! Verify root status in the Magisk Manager app.

I think you'll still get OTA update but once you update the phone will loose root. So Don't worry about OTA update because you can always download the latest firmware posted on Xiaomi website. Root, install Xposed. Install xposed modules like Gravitybox, MiUi 8 Tweaks, Boot manager and you'll never think again of OTA because so much of customizations and performance improvements you can do on your own with these modules.
PS: Not all OTAs are good. Don't depend much on OTAs because some device manufacturers push OTA to make your device work bad and so you'll buy new phone.
Can any user of Redmi Note 9 Pro Max confirm that you have rooted successfully? please
anyone successfully unlocked redmi note 9 pro max bootloader, currently the official tool is showing to wait 360hours,any other ways to unlock

Try factory reset.
If your device is unlocked, you possibly can flash with lower version of MIUI.
any update i have the same issue?
