What are the chances the LGV20 purchased from ebay can be hacked. - LG V20 Themes, Apps, and Mods

Hello folks, my LG V20 from verizon has been screen damaged a lot and this time, I decided to buy from ebay at a fraction of price. This question is not specifically for LG V20 but I just decided to put here since this is the phone I purchased. It arrived and looks nice and I dont need all the bells and whistles that came with original carrier however there is a concern whether the phone's software or hardware has been tampered with. I know it requires a specialized a deep knowledge and extremely unlikely that ebay buyers would do these but I'd take no chances whether there is a slim. That is because, understandably, all your personal information, or simply put, all your lifes including passwords, financial information and almost everything account you can think of can be accessed throug your phone. Has there been any proven or unproven instances of hacking through phone sold on ebay in the past?

To answer your question, yes. If the phone has been rooted and the data was reformatted ex. Twrp and, wipe system, data, and both caches then all data should be gone.

Looks like I need to do homework. I did some light bag
Looks like i need to do some homework. I used to do some light hacking activity I.e. burning custom rom etc when i had Samsung, but that was long ago. It appears to be unlocked for any carrier and i just installed SIM and did couple of OTA update from Verizon. I am not sure if I should get started by whether it is rooted and any custom rom installed. It looks perfectly ok but certainly feels sluggish than brand new phone out of box from carrier.

I can unrooted custom and back to stock rom. So, its beter to flash again rooted or stock rom.

i95swervin has posted today that he will upload a rom for your phone tomorrow. I'm running the alpha rom on the H918 V20, 1.0.7 release and, it's been stable and smooth. I tweaked the kernel alittle and, made it exactly the my liking, check out this thread when you get a chance https://forum.xda-developers.com/v2...ega-rom-oreo-vs995-h910-ls997-t3847510/page37

what you mean??

If you suspect the rom has been tampered, its better to reflashed the rom.

About as much a chance as you have at being struck by lightning and getting super powers.
If you want to concern yourself with the what if nefarious black hat did this you should not buy used. But a factroy reset and or twrp reset will blow out any cobwebs they could put on it.
In theory about the only thing they can do is report it stolen on you since your phone is not tied to your carrier your sim is. So unlike the phones of yesterday where they had no sim and the phone had it built in they would need your sim to clone your phone.

I bought from ebay too. At first there was a little bit of a white line 2cms up and 2cms down the display mostly unvisible. This sounds weird but when I unlocked the bootloader with dirty santa it appeared as a full black line then it came back to normal. 2 weeks later it comes and goes but now it seems this black line is permanent, it would only be white if the background is black.
The seller has extremely positive reviews btw and it was brand new with warranty. Inside the phone everything seems fine. But I'd charge the phone and it would stay at a 100% for an hour sometimes before dropping to 99%

Is it possible to damage phones with custom roms ?

The Reason i ask is either it is or i am the unluckiest person ever with a S2 lol
So far got the phone at xmas wasn't happy with the screen colours sent it off they said the main chip was faulty and had been replaced and a software upgrade etc...
Got it back and flashed a custom rom, well a few and noticed that i then had an issue where if someone called i had to put loudspeaker on in order to hear the other person...
Put phone back to stock and sent it off again...
Phone came back last week picked up monday used for a day all seemed fine, flashed a custom rom got another problem with the phone this time i have to put the loudspeaker on to hear other people they can hear me fine...
So its back to stock and back to vodafone tomorrow...
So can custom roms/kernels cause physical issue's with phones, never had an issue with my HTC Desire HD but i'm beginning to wonder if i should leave my next S2 stock, or have i just been unlucky ???
Would also add when going back to stock the screen colours seem much better than custom roms but the sounds issue's remain...
One word NO!
What rom are you flashing?
Checkrom, wickedrom, illusion Xt, not sure which if any has caused any issues could be I'm just unlucky
Definatly noticed issues with screen colours too which now in I'm back on stock have been sorted
Its all a bit weird

Trust me if that was the case damaging my phone by flashing a rom then my phone would of been damaged goods by the first month i had it
Anyway just be careful how you flash a rom and it is always advised to do a full wipe before installing one
Um, actually, yes.
You run the (slight) risk of bricking your phone every single time you flash something to it. If you're the type of person who's paranoid about these things & can't handle the idea of possibly not getting warranty service if things go wrong, you shouldn't be messing with your phone in the first place.
Anyone who has an expectation (as opposed to a "hope") of warranty service after they stuff around with the phone is an idiot.
The SG2 is a hard phone to brick. Follow the general guidelines and you should be fine. I can't imagine flashing a rom can break this phone. Worst that can happen is you brick it. Either it works or it doesn't.
Yeah Im fully aware that you risk bricking the phone
I've been flashing roms to HTC,s for years always trouble free
I always read and full wipe between flashes
Sounds like I've been unlucky then 3rd time phone is going back and since Xmas 1day without a fault not a great introduction to Samsung for me...
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
In all my time reading SGS1 and 2 the only ones who have bricked their phone are the idiots (1) who refuse to read instructions . Even then 90% of them have been able to recover .
the SGS2 quota of 1 is getting higher day by day for some reason .
jje
Yeah 3 physical faults though in a month which is what got me thinking maybe installing the custom roms is causing an issue, but if others are installing with no issue's i've obviously just been unlucky
Hopefully this time i get it back its sorted...

Seconded..
It's possible to introduce some new bugs by flashing a custom ROM (that's the price of development, you uncover new weird stuff), but not to physically damage the phone. You'd have to fiddle with the battery or greatly increase the voltages to accomplish that.
If you experience hardware issues after flashing a ROM, it means that the hardware was faulty before, and flashing the ROM just uncovered it and made it obvious to you whereas it was hidden before.
But don't let it get you down. Apparently a lot of SGS2's are faulty when coming out of the factory and need to be replaced.
The first one I had didn't last the night, it 'overcooked' itself when I plugged it to the mains to get it recharged (I knew those phones could get pretty hot but damn ! a 100°C is too much for it, it didn't stand the strain and gave up)..
In fairness they suggested a new phone in Vodafone today so it's gone back with the the request of a new phone rather than repair so we'll see
Also if anyone is interested I obviously flashed a few custom roms and reset the counter to zero and installed original Vodafone software and have had no issues warranty wise

I seem to have been lucky with a Vodafone SGSII, I'd have insisted on a new phone from it's first problem, Vodafone have always been pretty good at replacing.
I am wondering however how did you manage to reset the flash counter ? Even with a USB Jig mine won't reset. It will go into download mode, but that's it. I presumed my six week old SGSII was a newer one a jig won't work on.
Before trying to reset the counter you should flash the old boot loader (pre-KI1) on, the new one cannot be reset safely with a jig. Works just fine after this
What Snakeforhire said i flashed the old bootloader reset the counter with the USB Jig then reflashed the new bootloader...

Hi, new photon owner

Just wanted to drop a line as a new Motorola Photon owner.
I have been an XDA member for years and owned multiple devices. The Photon is replacing a HTC Shift. I additionally own a Sony S tablet.
Enjoying this new device!

Welcome to the Photon community!
Yea, welcome to the Family!
Welcome! I'm new too. Long time lurker, brand new poster. I have the Motorola Electrify, which is basically the same as the photon with some slightly different software, and no 4G =(. If you see people saying things like "Will you make an Electrify Version?" or "Does this work on Electrify?" That's just because the Photon and Electrify are so similar that making two forums is kind of silly. Unfortunately for me, my BL is locked, but I believe all versions of the Photon can be unlocked, so if Custom ROMs tickle your fancy, you're in luck!

I would not say unfortunate, I was unlocked and custom for months. 2/15/2012 I went bone stock and never looked back!!! MotoBLUR is not the best, but play with it long enough and you get things where you want them, you become confortable? Matter fact, if you put 10 photons side-by-side, I could pick mine on the first try!

Yes, I'm mostly fine with stock. I love it honestly. I just want to remove anything that's tracking me (a root should probably help with that) and to replace webtop with Ubuntop or Webtop+ (I'm still researching this.). I wouldn't mind switching to a custom rom if it still offered the full encryption, improved Exchange connectivity and the ability to get a real read on my extended battery.
I don't mean to hijack the thread, I just finally found a post with someone that likes stock and may know enough to be able to compare both or at least help me out in my searching.

I don't see it as jacking, I see it as a "one shop stop" for a new member and bring them up to speed on a few items/post that may interest them.
The encryption/tracking issue has been around for some time. Personally, I dont care. I go to work, home, maybe the grocery store, mall sometimes, and law enforcement is not looking for me (I dont think). secondly, once all carriers ditch CarrierIQ (is that the company that did their tracking?, that pretty much eased some mines. Personally, my GPS and WiFi (unless I need it) are off, you may get close off cell phone tower, but exactly where I am...............
As for Stock, ROM's gave me a headache. One day the phone worked, next it did not, would get home and it was working again? When I finally decided to put it back, I made a serious effort to see what stock had to offer, 2 days later I was happy and decided to dig deeper. Yes, I have a lot of bloatware, I just don't use it! Matter fact, I really don't hit the "App's" icon. Everything I do on a normal is on one of the Panels that I can find easily. But since I use the phone so much, if I'm in e-mail and I want to chack my bank, I just press and hold the home button and the last 10 current apps come up anyway, then I open the bank.
Thanks everyone.
I am a heavy modder, and spent 5 hours the first night I had my Photon downloading apps and setting up everything the way I like.

F.Y.I., downloading apps and setting everything up and modding are apples and oranges. Like srkelley and I, I have downloading apps and set everything up, stock! (matter fact, at one point I had 230+ apps, broke that down to less than 60!
Modding = Rooting (gaining Admin Rights to root directory) and unlocking (kicking Sprint to the door and taking control of your phone to do anything you damm well please, Like blowing away SprintNSCAR and installing whatever you want!)

I'm too boring for big brother, but if anything were to ever occur then I'd like to make things as difficult as possible for them legally. I just don't like people going through my stuff but pretty much have to accept that it happens in our lives now. Not without a fight and exercising all of my rights though!
I'm probably going to back up stock and try something else for a while. I honestly don't feel limited in stock, just in Webtop. If I'm going to really go through with modifying anything then I may try underclocking the processor to see if I can get better battery life without losing performance in regular use. I don't do anything too taxing on the phone so it's power is mostly wasted on me outside of keeping things smooth.
hello
Welcome,have you unlocked and rooted?
Hi,
I also bought it few days back and I have rooted it and installed CWM too. My photon is unlocked meaning I can put any operators sim and use it. I am now in India and using it with Tata Docomo.
If I change the rom, do I have to unlock it again or it will stay unlocked forever ?
Thanks.

You've unlocked the bootloader, so you can install custom ROMs, kernels, etc.
GSM isn't locked unless you are in the US, its a world phone.
Another Electrify user here, but I'm neither new here, nor new to the device. I've had it for a little over 4 months now. And I will never go back to stock. Screw that. The closest I will consider going is CM7.2. CyanogenMod+Gingerbread. I really don't want to downgrade from ICS, though. It's too nice. I will admit part of the thrill is having something most others (93% of Android users!) do not, but I genuinely like it on its own as well. I just got a huge performance increase going from stock to Joker's CM9, and ICS requires more resources than Gingerbread. Yet the phone runs faster? How does THAT work? It's because of bloatware. And Blur is just terribad. I imagine CM7.2 would be pretty slick since it doesn't require the power of ICS and has all the crap from Blur removed.

Nope! If you unlock the bootloader, it's unlocked. Flashing ROMs doesn't touch the bootloader. To re-lock the bootloader you would have to flash a locked bootloader. I haven't heard of anybody doing that, though.

New Policy For Best Buy's Extended Warranty

Hey guys/gals,
Just thought I would share this with everyone. Best Buy has a new policy with their warranty for phones (at least the ones by me do).
You no longer have to ship your phone in for service. All you do is go to the store, tell them your problem, they ship a new phone (the last couple I had replaced arrived in less than 36 hours), and you bring your phone in when the new/re-manufactured one arrives.
This is great if you have a problem where your current phone still works. You don't have to dig out an old phone, or rent a POS loaner phone from BBY, but you can still do all of those things if your phone is unusable.
Like I said just though I would share this info. I think BBY keeps making their protection policies better and better.
Hope this has helped someone!
I will put this to the test this weekend!!! Good find!!!

This is what they did for me when I needed a replacement about six months ago.
They did not offer it to me until I spoke with the manager because i didn't want to be without a phone for a few days or use one of their loaner phones.

about time they changed it, I canx my 3x black ties just because of this
Best buy insurance, ftw. I will never buy another phone anywhere else. Im on my 3rd lte and i got the lte free because they had no more 3d's. They ask basic questions about what happened and then ship it out. I got my last replacement in 2 days. Took it in on a Monday at 7pm and got my replacement on Wednesday at 7pm.
Awesome. I love black tie (bb). I had to replace due to malfunctions and no questions or hassles in fact the reason I signed up for black tie was the guy indicated I would never have to send anything in and that I would get a new replacement directly from the store which they did. I even had the guy write and confirm that on my sales receipt because I didn't believe him.

Thank you all for the info. I won't be going to Sprint stores anymore. BB sounds like the way to go now. Back when I worked there it definitely wasn't but a lot has changed since then. Good to know.
My EVO has developed a problem where I'm getting all sorts of crazy noise on the screen. Definitely a hardware problem as it even has problems with the HTC logo on boot. I'm currently S-OFF with the latest CM release installed. Do I need to unroot and restore back to Sense before I take the phone into Best Buy, or do they not care?
Thanks for the help and all the useful info!!

Yeah, my store is the same way, but I doubt every store is the same. To be safe I would backup, flash a stock rom, bring it in and show them the problem, then recover until your "new" phone gets in and the re-flash a stock rom when you bring it back.
I doubt they'd care, but this should cover your a$$ either way.

Best buy covers software though right? So why would it matter? There's nothing saying they don't cover rooted devices. I even asked the manager when i got my 3d and he said if i bricked it I'm covered. So why flash back to stock? Unless youre having issues that could be rom/kernel related of course.. then youll obviously want to flash to something else to make sure its not the rom and then go back to stock to show them its happeneing on there also.

Because it is better to be safe than sorry. If you read the terms and conditions, they don't list software as covered. They could deny coverage if they wanted to. Every store is not the same, but if you hand them a phone that is obviously not stock, there is more of a chance of them questioning it. I don't think they would, but it takes me 2 minutes to flash back to stock, so I'd rather avoid a potential headache. I'm getting a "new" phone anyway, so what do I care if I leave cm10 on my old one. Plus, it's a good way to wipe your phone.
Personally, if I were a store employee and someone brought me a "bricked" phone that I could prove was rooted, I wouldn't cover them. If you bricked your phone, that's your fault. Best Buy or any other business shouldn't subsidize your hobby, because you didn't know what you were doing. That makes the development community look bad. Now if it were a problem that was obviously not caused by root, I would look the other way.
I'm currently in this situation where my screen is cracked. I too was wondering if I needed to unroot before I had them ship the phone out for repair. What stock ROM does everyone suggest?

To keep Root, or not to keep root... (help me decide)

I am currently fully rooted, running the latest jasmineRom. I liked the stock based kernal, had some nice features like tap to turn on, etc, and haven't dabbled in other roms such as CMMod, LiquidSmooth etc on the G3. Honestly I don't know if they have some of the features for waking the screen by tapping it that make the G3 usable without any front buttons, and changing roms and recustomizing / installing everything is a bit of a bear, so I haven't experimented with it.
My phone has the 5.1.1 update downloaded, keeps wanting to schedule it. (It actually tried to install itself, but I think TWRP prevented it from working). So now I am faced with the question of, what to do?
Do I let 5.1.1 install, and thereby gain Android Pay, which I did like, but lose root, which I enjoy for letting me debloat my phone? (Also G3 tweeksbox) Those are really the only things I've used root for. Do I experiment with other roms? (And then, how do I return to stock? Does TWRP prevent me from doing so, or would it get taken out in the update? I honestly don't know and have yet to find that information). I have read the Flash back to Stock using the KDZ method, which is actually how I rooted my phone to begin with, but it seems that is under the assumption I am running a stock rom / bootloader to begin with.
Just trying to get some input from people far more familier with this than I. If there is a way back to stock, including bootloader, what ROM would you recommend I try?
Thanks in advance!
Hi! Questions go in Q&A.
Be aware that if you take 5.1.1 that so far you *can't* root even if you want to, and you also can't currently downgrade.
If you're looking to return to completely stock including the recovery, so that you can take OTAs in the future, then flash the 24B KDZ with LG Flash Tool 2014. If you want to be rooted but be able to turn root off and on, you can do that with any, although I think Pay only works with stock. Another user on here just found out that merely temporarily deactivating root allowed him to use Pay just fine. Probably have to reboot in between turning it on and off - not sure.
Here are my thoughts on the subject: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=63191071&postcount=135
Personally, I like rooting and twrp b/c of nandoid backups, debloating, removing ads and using titanium backup. I would feel truly lost without these options (and, to be perfectly honest, I love tinkering with electronics). If you decide to pass on the update for now, freeze system update using titanium backup, then wipe cache and that should remove the downloaded update in memory prior to installation . It's really a personal choice, but for me, I will likely stay where I am now rather than give up root.
The only reason I really rooted this phone was to get rid of bloat and fix the weak notification volume. I've never been one to jump aboard new updates as soon as they're released. Gonna wait it out and see if something happens with the root situation.
Decided I might as well try a custom rom, never used a custom rom on a phone, only tablets. Titanium backup and custom recovery are valuable tools, and decided it was worth the risk.
Went with Liquid Smooth, which I think has auto-updates ala CM Mod. So I get the benefits of 5.1.1, without the hassle of Verizon. Going to see what I think.
Thanks for the replies!
The update deactivates wireless charging. That was the deal breaker for me.
Edit: Turns out my wife and I both had a bad update. I used repair assistant and wireless charging is working again.

Ive been running a CM12 based ROM for months now, it fixes almost everything wrong with the 5.0.2 update and with this update blocking root and downgrading, it seems CM12 based ROMS are the best choice for now.

Where did you hear that? A web search shows inconsistent functionality starting with v5.0 with various carriers, including one report of someone who tried everything to get it to work and couldn't, so he reassembled his phone and tossed it on the charger, and it started working.

Sorry, I should of been clearer. The update to 35b, 5.1.1, will render wireless charging useless. It can not be rooted. If you decide to update then you will loose root until the devs can figure it out. That will have to wait until the kdz is available. I have been wireless charging since I got the phone and bought the new back from ebay. It has worked without fail until the latest update.
Clarification requested

I should have been clearer as well. I take it that you are saying that wireless charging stopped working on your VS985 phones when you upgraded to v5.1.1. That's distinct from saying that wireless charging no longer works when anyone upgrades the LG G3 to v5.1.1.
Certainly your one two data points are significant, but I'd like to know if it's confirmed that it won't work on other VS985 phones that upgrade to v5.1.1 (35B).
I'm tempted to go buy one of the charging backs and pads. Where did you get yours? I seriously considered it a year ago when I bought the phone, but the lack of a nice belt clip deterred me. How are you carrying the phone (eg, belt clip or what)?
Edit: I was told that the charging back made the phone thicker. However, a little research seems to suggest that's only true for Verizon's "Circle case" (eg, a combined front and back), which I don't need. Someone even reported that they just cut off the front case, and then it fit their belt clip holder. Also, another reporter said that it charged much slower. Comments on all of this?

I have the vs985 on verizon, purchased about 1 week after it's release. It is rooted since stump and I have run either Jasmine or skydragon (currently sd5.0/4.2 kernel) . I purchased the charging sticker (available on ebay at the time). I was able to put the sticker onto the original back of the phone and wirelessly charge it both with a circle case (US lgg3) and without. I also bought a Korean circle case that had a charging sticker built into it. I removed the european charging sticker and replaced that one with one of the ones that I purchased on ebay (again, for US, wireless charging) and that worked as well (did not need the original oem back in this situation as the circle case back served as phone back, again this worked on a US wireless charger perfectly (I have a tylt). Never used a belt clip, but hope that this provides you with some useful information. Charging was complete and never slow.

I don't understand the issue.
I have an LG G3 with TWRP, Xposed and root; I can use Android Pay.
I had to jump through hoops but I can use it. Adding cards is a pain, but I can do that too.
To get it working you have to temp-unroot.
Install and configure Pay.
Re-enable root.
You will need to install Xposed and the module that provides cloaking for root, for Pay called -> No Device Check http://repo.xposed.info/module/com.pyler.nodevicecheck
Now you should be able to use Android Pay.
Jasmine 9.0 is out. I'd try that out. Its 5.1.1 with root
xdabbeb has the 35b bootstack that can be flashed to get advanced calling features working. Read about it.

Any custom recovery for the vz V10 yet?

Hello folks, i've been rooted for a while now and i was wondering if there is any custom recovery for the verizon v10 yet? The reason is because i messed up my google apps and i need to flash them to make the market work again. Any input would be appreciated.
As of right now no, we need the bootloader unlocked first and thats gonna be a minute. So just do a flash back to stock. Theres also a option where it won't wipe your data, instead of upgrade in the programs options just select refurbished instead ( I think, you'll have to look it up).

Kind of have to agree. There is just is not a following for this phone.
I have really been considering selling this phone and getting a Moto X Pure.
Does anyone have connection with team twrp? Or the developers that usually work an help with rooted phone's recoveries?
I do, and it won't happen without a bootloader unlock.

Good luck with that. I am sure this phone will get root and boot loader but by then I will be long onto another phone. Having used it now for a time, I really wish I went with the smaller moto x pure, I could have gotten it completely customized, and root, and roms... one handed use with this phone sucks even with the tools provided.
for half the price with performance on par...

Also , I'm starting to see reports of the G4 boot loop of death on the V10. We live and learn I suppose. My v10 is sitting on my desk collecting dust now while I'm rocking my N6P.

I'm pretty decent at fixing the G4 bootloop. It's caused by the NAND coming away from the board. Have to reflow it and pray it isn't to far gone. Sometimes it works forever sometimes just Kong enough to get data from. Sad to hear that the V10 is displaying the same issue. Haven't seen any at my shop yet but then again have only seen 3 or 4 V10s.

I had to warrenty my v10 due to random issues i.e. icons would be grey blocks, apps would act as if they'd been wiped. Tried doing a recovery restore from my pc and it still did it. Literally the phone was loosing it's memory.
Well I just sold my v10 so be looking for that bootloader to be unlocked soon.
So many know vulnerabilities to try, so little time... HAHA if on 5.1.1 it's possible
