LG still shoots itself in the foot - LG V30 Questions & Answers

What I've recently found out is the source of all LG's lags. It's not animations as everyone believed. They have 2 thing that must be fixed urgently. Firstly they have cfq scheduler for I/O ops which I believe is way too slow and useless these days. It cripples I/O performance in the first place.
Secondly, if I go to dev settings and check "Enable strict mode" option you'll see red frames around apps when app runs in the main thread for long time. And what you'll see is that red frame never appears around Chrome, or Opera, or Firefox, or games.
Instead, when you go back to LG Home aka launcher, or to settings list like apps & notifications list you'll always see red frame appearing. It's because all the way LG's ROM is running in the main thread which is lame and legacy and must be deprecated and fixed ASAP. You can see red frame even when you press power button and block your phone which must not appear. Or, in stock Music app when browsing list of albums, red frame appears every several seconds.
How long will it take for LG to fix it's laggy ROM? It hurts their sales A LOT

Look how long it took Samsung to get their crappy TouchWiz to not lag? I'm gonna guess not soon for LG lol

Not sure what your problem is, my LG v20 and now v30 never lags.

Mine doesn't either.

V30, one year usage without factory reset, not a single lag. No idea what's are you talking about. Maybe it's your carrier stuff..

I hope that someone will ask Max Lee so him to show in his reviews of V40 what I said in original post. And if he'll show and compare with like some oneplus 6T everyone will see that and LG will have to do something about it

I really don't care about bench marks. They don't represent real life usage. The phone does not lag.

Considering the majority of LG owners with v20 and v30 never experienced lag....
And I see a majority of Huawei owners say that phone lags hard.

I understood where I'm mistaken.
To see effect of "Strict mode enabled" you must reboot phone. I can't see red frames around screen not until I rebooted mine. But after I rebooted with "Enable strict mode" tick even when I start camera it fires up with red frame all around window. And even when I press power button to block phone it turns screen off but before it phone shows red frame. It shouldn't happen, the launcher LG Home shouldn't run itself always in the main thread.

Don't you suddenly know what I/O scheduler do Huawei's phones use? Probably different than cfq, right?
And background thing don't cause lags. There's at least 4 low power A53 cores aka Kryo Silver in every 835/845 that are able to run background things. Lags are caused by running interactive things in main tread which lead to visible delay for user

Uninstall all tweaks you don't need them. LG optimized the hell out of the V30. Your kernel tweaks are what's causing the lag. After I removed L Speed, Kernel Adiutor and all that nonsense my device has been lagfree. These apps make people think they undo an OS better than LG developers. Not tweaking anything gives you the best result.

I personally think is a mix bag of Android Oreo bugs and LG UI bugs mixed together and installing clunky apps do not help. The floating bar alone take 1gb of system memory for shortcuts that is some bad UI implementation.

I sometimes encounter lag on my G6. I dont know whats causing it. Im already using nova launcher. UI lag is still there.

So, you know now that lags are not affected by which launcher you use and it's not LG launcher that lags? It's LG defective internal I/O and CPU governors that cause lags

I don't have any lag either. I think he's done stuff to his phones, which cause lag.
For instance, some of the package disablers cause lag, depending on the system app being "disabled". Plus, you're not really saving any space.
The OP moved on to G7 before we got universal root on the V30 and may even be on V40 by now or he's seriously looking at it. He's posted AGAINST having ROOT in the recent past. We had a discussion in another thread on the V40 forum about root as philosophy of ownership. Some people feel that root is only for "improving" phone functionality and if stock firmware is good enough, there's no need for root anymore. I disagree with that sentiment.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=77940202&postcount=18
He specifically mentioned app disablers here:

Yes, you can remove. Those that can't from menu, can be uninstalled by adb from PC or with means of LG Package Disabler. So, no hassle

Improve camera and speed overall, stop lagging

Hi to all,
first to say, I am not M4A owner, but, in my company lots of people got it as company phone (8GB versions) and everyone complains...
Primarily, lagging, lack of internal memory, camera too slow, and I saw it myself, that LP SW is real pain in the a....
I had previously Z2, Z ultra, Z3C, and now Z3+ , and really likes Sony phones, and although all these were flagships, I am sure M4A can perform better.
So, what do you, users, recommend?
Ideas:
- rooting, custom recovery
- exposed
- some scripting like skynet project
- is there some better camera SW that will speed up camera performance
- What is the best way to solve memory issues etc...
I'd like to help (at list some of them, willing to play with it)...But I need real info from users that improved their user experience...

In my opinion, the only thing that really could improve the overall performance of this device is an optimized kernel. The first firmware for this phone was great in terms of performance, then it started going downhill and the recent updates made a sort of "uphill" but still bad. Storage and performance is what limits the satisfaction of using this phone - other than that, everything is great!
Gaming is very bad i don't know why I had Xperia tx 1G ram 2 core but it's much better than m4 with 2 G ram 8 core why? camera is just bad very slow hope someone just fix them we need real devloper because it's software problems not hardware

This method is based on modifying interactive governor. So you need root access. You can do this by 2 ways. The first is kernel auditor (also requires busybox). Just set up interactive parametres as i wrote on 4pda. I think you will understand how to do this. The 2 way is to put init.qcom.post_boot.sh into system/etc with right permissions. It's the same, but as for me it's more comfortable. You can just change governor to ondemand, but phone will randomly rebooting

Marshmallow Update, Impressions, comparison, found bugs etc.

]Finally is here. Marshmallow 26.3.A.0.131 update bring us so wanted improvements.
Here you can post your thoughts, performance reports, or possible bugs you may found.
First what get better:
1. Overall performance - is so smooth, every menu scroll fast.
2. Camera - i can't confirm, seems little bit better
3. WIFI - Wow so much better, before i was trying couple times until get connected, now is instant.
4. Actual perfomance - I make test with Antutu, Asphalt etc. Is much, much better. Antutu score on Android 5 was around 29 k and 30 k max. Marshmallow wake the beast and score now is 32 k. Asphalt 8 is playable on medium settings, before very low settings was only way to play it normal. Do you know why? CPU isn't limited anymore 4 cores on 1.46 Ghz and 0.8 Ghz for the second 4 cores.
What wasn't fix, or improve:
Apps opening time
Overheating is same as before
Low storage
More perfomance needed
Sites loading is slow as before
I found two bugs, the one bug is in the dialer the letters under the numbers are repositioned a little bit, and idk if this is a bug but the status bar doesn't take the color of the app you are using

I think it's called "feature", you may want to try What's New (Play Store) themes if you'd like colourful status-bar. It looks like that stock themes prefer black status bars now.

Seems to be a bug, Detect USB device does not make sense without OTG.
The update is fine but a little bit disappointed specially on performance, apps are still opening very slow although UI is faster, at least now we have a better multitasking performance and no more bugs on RAM.
I had about 35k score in Antutu so MM sucks.

I also found that speaker was louder and clear on LP plus even have a little bit of distortion at max volume now, and in mi case, performance in 3D games was smoother in LP 3.120 with ondemand CPU governor. It might fix again if i change governor in MM but still not rooted as im waiting for a method for locked bootloader.

How to get a buttery smooth UI.

So I wanted to write this quick and simple tutorial on how to get utter smooth UI. it only takes 3 quick things and you'll be set.
1. Use Nova Launcher. TOUCHWIZ has come a long way but it's still not where it needs to be.
2. Under developer options make all the animations .5
3. Under developer options turn on Force GPU Rendering.
With these three things done this phone is absolutely butter smooth and runs super fast.

You can install system UI tuner and make the animations even faster. I set it at 0.3 now. Also make sure you disable as many things as possible, things you don't use and especially knox and secure folder.
I'm grateful because I know someone learned something. But I thought this was pretty common.
I've been away from Samsung since note 4. Sad these devices still have that slight lag.
None of what's in the op fixes the issue in the long wrong. First thing I did when I recurved the phone but 2 months later, lag fest.

Same here. Not even the tiniest lag or stutter. Set my animation speed to 0.5x (I do that even on AOSP phones) and it's faster than anything. Apps load instantly. Battery life is great. Screen quality is unbelievable. Camera quality is sick. Best phone I ever had. Now when I see how many problems Pixel 2 and 2 XL has. I'm happy that I got this phone. Samsung is improving a lot. But next year I might switch to Pixel 3 XL(only if they will fix all these problems).
I think the Play Store and Chrome lag from time to time. The Samsung browser is smoother.
Mine I set it ot High Performance Mode, 0.5 transitions, force gpu rendering on 2d apps.

This shouldn't even be up for discussion. If your touchwiz UI is not smooth on this phone maybe do a restore or check for 3rd party software utilizing your CPU in back ground. This phone doesn't need 3rd party launcher or customization to be smooth.

Performance modes do nothing in terms of how CPU and GPU are handled all they do is mess with resolution screen brightness.
Also force GPU 2d is doing nothing for you as it was put in place long time ago for apps that didn't utilize GPU for 2d. This day age with new android and touchwiz your GPU is being used and you could test this buy enabling *show GPU view updates* in dev options and navigate your UI and you will see the screen flashes red that because your GPU is already being used

Well good for you Some people can't handle the options you get with Android. At least you know your limitations. Best of luck on the X !
Note....this isn't sarcasm. Coming from a technical background, if you don't need or use the features of the note, by all means go with something simpler for you to use! My wife loves her iPhones..... I have an i7 MacBook pro and I've built several hackintosh towers. I'm not against apple but their iOS can't do what I need it to physically / technically. The note is the best of the best of the Android platform at the moment.

I though about the X as only thing really holding back on ever getting iphone really was lack of OLED as im not into rooting and custom ROMS anymore.
Wanted X more so for game optimization but is way too much $$$ for what you get.
Glad I didn't though the note 8 *qualcomm*is huge surprise in terms of performance compared to like my note 5 that would thermal throttle way too fast and frames would drop. This phone has no noticeable thermal throttling with games so games that support 60fps run smooth and sustain performance and course you cant beat the quality of this screen my UHD mkv movies look so good on this.

Mate 20 PRO - Is performance mode worth it?

I've been using performance mode since the day I got the phone, so for the last 10 days, but I wanted to know - is it really worth it? I rarely play games, if I play them at all. I don't edit videos, do some photoshop work or whatever. I mainly use M20P for whatsapp facebook insta reddit and browsing.
So do I really need it or should I disable performance mode and get even more battery juice?

TBH, I've never used that and the mate is the fastest most fluid phone I've ever used. I really don't think it's needed at all.

I see. So you would reckon I dont need it enabled?
Not really seen any difference in performance with it, I tested but don't use it at all now.
Sent from my HUAWEI LYA-L09 using XDA Labs
The performance mode increases the GPU performance and doesn't have this much impact on the CPU.
So you will only notice it while playing games or doing some GPU-accelerated video editing - the everyday performance won't improve this much..
I think it changes the cpu's governor to respond faster to any solicitation (for me it unlocks a bit faster for example).
If you don't need extra battery life you can stick to performance mode.
But like others said, it's not a big change, it will still feel smooth and fast without performance mode.
Alright, I'll just do a test and if the battery lifr difference is significant, I'll turn it off. Thank you everyone
I didn't realize we even had a toggle for that. Too bad they treat it the way they do - it should be a list of apps that automatically turn it on when they are running. EMUI 9.1 has something kinda like that, except it is a group of optimized settings that have been pre-made for specific games. There are only about a dozen or so games on the list so far, which kinda makes it pointless. There were reports that Huawei had changed their mind and remove the performance toggle from the Mate 20 Pro at the last moment, because it made the phone heat up and didn't really gain anything. I have a zillion games on my phone but none of them are so GPU intensive that the phone struggles, haven't seen a need for this mode - yet.
I play tekken 6 on PPSSPP emulator, it runs the same with or without it, pretty much perfect.

In other words, what you're saying is basically there's no need to actually run it as the perfomance isn't significantly improved, likely not at all? And I don't even play games, I guess it's even more pointless for me? Lol

I see. Could it be Huawei just put that with the EMUI 9 to satisfy those who complained they couldnt get the same or similar antutu or geekbench scores that were advertised?

I think this is what "Game acceleration" mode is for...you select the apps and they will get a performance boost at the expense of battery. Never tried it myself, but I wonder if this is a "Performance mode" limited to those apps...that's how I look at it.

Game acceleration is the gpu turbo, performance mode is in battery settings,2 different things.
Be that as it may, general consensus seems to be that it is pretty much useless...
The performance mode was meant for a higher score on benchmarks. Huawei and a few other OEMs were accused of detecting popular benchmark apps and purposely tune their software to score higher on benchmarks. The performance mode was a result of public demand.

Yeah, thought it was something amongst those lines. So, useless in day to day usage

Yes. It is useless. There is no need to keep your CPU running at maximum in everyday usage. The phone can auto detect graphics intensive and CPU hungry apps, it will adjust automatically to the needs of different apps. Use the phone as it is for the best stress free experience.
(Damn, I sound like some Huawei salesperson)
Lmao! But yeah I figured as much. thanks haha

this!
I think people have forgotten about the benchmark cheating controversy.
"optimisation" in benchmark apps (that is detection and different settings for benchmarks vs real world apps) was considered cheating (and rightly so)
so instead, huawei made the optimisations an option for the entire phone. only affects benchmarks afaik. maybe some intensive apps... but which apps right now would be considered power intensive for a phone (not a benchmark, an actual app).

Question Game optimizing service can't be debloted using ADB

I tried to delete this thing but it keeps coming back every second
You can't delete it, only disable it.
Why do you want to get rid of it anyways?

Well after a lot of searching and testing it appears that this app causes touch problems in games, look it up
With root it would be possible

No. Because GOS is in the system partition that is RO only and you can't remove stuff from it even with root access.

GOS on S23U has no effect on the performance as it had on the previous generations whatsoever.
Also, the IDEA of the GOS WAS to implement some sort of a "balancing" of the SOC to prevent it from excessive heating and provide a somewhat stable experience in the games. Though, that thing changed a LOT with 8gen2 SOC. Running with or without GOS has no impact on the performance, games, or benchmarks, all the same.
Regarding touch issues, seems like that was related again to the previous gen.
The article is from last year.

I don't have any issues regarding performance it's a beast in that area but the touch is driving me nuts because this thing is not cheap and it's not acceptable

RMA your device then. No issues here with touch whatsoever.
You don't need to uninstall it, just disable it. That said, I've had no issues with my S23U either.
Hello,
Does anyone has a safe to remove list of apps? Apps which really are not useful and don't break anything.
Thanks.

With a Magisk module you can mount an empty file over the apk and it would be the same as if the app wasn't installed at all.
gos working without gamelauncher ? i mean if i dont add any game game launcher then gos still will be active ?
Including the -k keeps the user data on your phone. Try excluding it and try again, it might help.

Yes GOS still continues to screw with PS remote play multi touch on the S22 ultra and the S23 Ultra. It forces you to have to reboot your phone before being able to play PS remote play w/o the touchscreen issue every single time.

outdated resource, that "issue" is already fixed
Go into game booster, labs and turn on alternate game performance management, that disables gos, but it has nothing to do with touch issues, mine is working fine as well
