Honor 8X Max Google Play Store issue - Honor 8X Questions & Answers

Just got my new Honor 8X Max in the mail and it's the chinese version (I'm living in Europe). The model number is ARE-AL00. I got the GMS installer and the Google Installer v2 and now I can open the play store, but I can't use it to install or uninstall apps, it just gets stuck on the "(un)installing" screen. When I try to install the Play store from a separate apk I usually get a program which I can't even open. And I've tried this with and without the software update. If anyone has got the Play store working on this phone I'd love to know how you did it.
Overall I'm pretty upset with this phone. I didn't realize I was getting the Chinese version and of course it comes with all kinds of censorship and ability restrictions, I spend like 10 hours trying to figure out how to root it and it turns out Huawei decided to make unlocking the bootloader impossible only a few months ago and funkyhuawei (with their insane prices) can't even do anything for a Qualcomm chipset so I'm S.O.L. I don't think the Chinese company I bought from will give a refund after the box is opened so I'm basically out my $300 if I want another phone. I was excited to be getting such great hardware for such a low price but the lack of functionality and customizability makes it a complete waste.

Same situation here, here is what I did to get Play Store works on my Honor 8X :
- Turn on the "Authorize unknown source apps install thing"
- Install GMS installer to get the Play Store works
- Install Gboard to get rid of the chinese keyboard everywhere.
But still, I'm searching for the Global Firmware and according to a Honor / Huawei Customer Agent, they do not allow firmware downloads anymore.
Hope this can help other people in the same case...

Thanks a lot for the help. My more-tech-savvy friend encouraged me to use F-droid and Yalp and that has been working fine so I'm going to give that a try before insisting on getting Google back...I emailed Huawei customer support about unlocking the bootloader and received an interesting response:
"We kindly inform you that in order to achieve a better user experience, Huawei has decided to terminate the unlock code application service. If your device is already rooted, we inform you that it no longer counts with warranty or device support.
Also, Huawei USA does not provide codes to unlock the bootloader under any circumstance. We kindly inform you that this action can potentially "brick" the device or in other words, renders the device completely unusable and voids the warranty service and device support. We have no control over how unlocking the bootloader will affect your device."
I'm emailed Huawei USA just cause I'm American (living in Sweden though), but this response suggests that maybe if I email Huawei Sweden or China that they will give me one? Gonna give it a try and see what happens.
Also my original post may have been a bit reflexive, I need to give this phone a chance. I remember thinking my last phone (Galaxy S5) was pretty stupid for a few weeks, I eventually just got over it.

Yes the camera is good quality from what I can tell and the battery life is great. But it is a huge phone, if you don't want something so big then you should probably get the 8X instead of the 8X Max.

This is my very own guide on how to download Play Store on Honor 8X: https://www.oscrunch.com/2018/11/17/google-play-store-on-honor-8x-and-8x-max/
I guess you will have to use a different version of GMS installer. Also, this process requires you to install one more application.
Try this and let me know how it goes. It should work perfectly fine.

Yes, you nailed It!
Speaking for myself, I can say that Today I'm a happy owner of a Chinese Honor 8X, but in the past I was in trouble because I was not able to find the *right* version of GSM installer that fits to me (JSN-AL00a).
It was hard to clear all those Chinese apps from my device, but now I have a very strong phone with a high level of performance.

That's my pleasure Glad that this guide has helped.

I had issue on installing Google play. Package installer block me from installing gmsinstaller.apk. what you do to get around it is thru adb. Make sure that you turn off "monitor app install by adb" in developer option or it won't work. If you need more detail let me know.

Hi
Now my honor 8x max has all Google App work fine
Thx dude

Try this
1.Tap 7-8 times on build number it will enable developers option
2.Go to developers options
3.Enable USB debugging
4.Disable Monitor apps installed by ADB
5. use adb install -r MyApp.apk
your apk will be installed.

Thanks @miststudent2011
I eventually managed to get Google Play installed and working (thanks UsamaM). Please see my steps on that page: https://www.oscrunch.com/2018/11/17/google-play-store-on-honor-8x-and-8x-max/#comment-65

[Q] MediaPad 10 FHD

So, this particular xda-noob got a MediaPad 10 FHD on a trip to China. The nice version, with 2GB of RAM and 1.4GHz clock, not the tuned-down version soon to be released in Europe.
I have plenty of questions, like will I be able to put international firmware (i.e. including Play Store etc) on it, but first things first:
Should that device be discussed on this board? Or should I wait for a separate board for the 10 FHD?

I flashed more than that. I downloaded the "world wide" firmware from the Huawei website and installed it, according to the instructions. Now I have everything I wanted (calendar, contacts,…) and more (all the apps I've installed on the phone) Yay
No rooting, no tricky renaming of files. Thanks, Huawei, for not making an effort to make my life complicated! Now… what is the reason our Chinese friends don't simply download that firmware instead of the Cinese one? Maybe they can't get a Google account, so all this beautiful stuff is useless to them?
Anyway: I'm sorry to say that i don't have a lot of questions at this point. What's a noob to do if everything works out of the box.
BUT: when questions eventually do emerge, is this the board for them?
Cheers,
Martin
CMW recovery and custom ROMs
Does the CMW installation and CM10 guide as described in this forum which refers to the mediapad 7 works for the mediapad 10 as well or would it brick the device? Since both pads called Mediapad I would recommend to open a separate forum for Mediapad 10 and Mediapad 7. Furthermore the official Android release from Huawei does not have google apps installed. Could you please release a guide how to flash it onto it? Thanks guys

hi martin,
I've purchased 3 10 fhd recently. one for myself, one for a friend in berlin, and the last is for my wife. Since we have to use those google staffs I flashed the international firmwares for all the 3 mediapads. But as far as I know there are quite a lot customers in china would like to stick on the stock chinese firmware for several reasons.
1. the development of the chinese firmware is more active. you will get more updates in this firmware.
2. you can still root the chinese firmware and install google staffs onto it.
3. anyway, the experience of accessing gmail, gtalk, youtube as well as facebook and twitter are either difficult or simply just impossible. so for most people in china it's pointless to flash an international firmware. It's impossible to get non-free apps from google play in China mainland as well as in Taiwan because the payment in such areas is not supported.
And there is another firmware for Huawei devices, the Emotion UI, a.k.a. EMUI, which gets tons of fans in China. This firmware is said to be one with special tunes and optimizations for Huawei devices such as D1 xl smartphone, P1 xl smartphone and, of course, the 10 mediapad. Right now there are a lot of fans of this firmware calling for a ``natively-rooted'' version of it, in this way installing google's staff would become easier.
Anyway, I also find this 10 fhd is quite a good choice. It just cost 2700 chinese yuan (~400USD or ~300euro) for the WIFI/2GB RAM/16GB ROM version.
If you are really looking for some interesting staff on your new toy, please think about installing or compiling full-functional linux for it. Right now I've compiled a gentoo linux for it, with x-window. It works as well as on my laptop.

Firmware S10-101u
Today I spotted a newer firmware on Huawei's website, and proceeded to install it. Only to find out afterwards that this was for the 3G version of the tablet.
So: for the wifi version, you want the one called S10-101w, for the 3G version, the one called S10-101u. Using the 3G firmware on a WiFi-only tablet gives an error message "Failed to update modem" that will sit on the screen and not go away.
Skype
I recently tried to use Skype on the MediaPad 10 FHD. Two problems:
1. Video didn't seem to work, neither sending, nor receiving.
2. The microphone volume seems to be so low that it's unusable.
(I've found posts about problems with Mic volume for other android devices. All fixes seem to involve rooting. Anybody tried to root a MediaPad yet?)
Google Maps and Google Earth navigation
Another thing that doesn't work as it should are the gestures for rotating in Google maps and both tilting and rotating in Google Earth.
I can tilt in Maps by sliding two fingers next to each other up and down. I can rotate by sliding two fingers above each other left and right. But the expected rotation gesture of doing circular movements with the fingers doesn't work.
In Earth, neither the tilting gesture nor any of those two rotating gestures work.
Some mobile phones seem to have this problem, possibly if they have bad multitouch support. I remember reading in some form (which I can't seem to find now ) that there are some kernel configuration variables that these gestures depend on.

According to Huawei:
You will be attracted by the brilliant games.
It also has the simple quick applications.
With touch screen you can have ultimate experience.
I always enjoy my visits to Huawei's web site
But does anyone know whether it is possible to flash new firmware without completely resetting the tablet. Reconfiguring Wifi access, mail accounts, beginning World of Goo from level 1, etc. Had that twice last week.

The easiest way is to install the "worldwide" version of the software, instead of the China-specific one, which is on the tablet if you buy it in China. That will not only give you the familiar set of Google apps, facebook, etc., it will also remove chat apps, browsers, games, etc. that are specifically chinese.
Go to Huawei's software download site find you device in the menus, and find the firmware for your device. S10-101w for the WiFi-only version, S10-101u for the one with mobile connectivity.
You will get a large zip file, which takes a long time to download. China is far away.
You unzip it and follow the instructions in the PDF. The English is a bit funny, but they're entirely understandable and accurate. No point in repeating them here really.
The only thing you might want to know before you start: you will have to copy the files for the update onto a micro SD card that you plug into your tablet. So you'll need a micro SD card. No micro SD card, no update. And (unless you do the download with the tablet) you need a way of writing to that card with your computer. So you might need a micro SD -> SD adapter.
Oh, one more thing: the process pretty much wipes the phone. All installed apps are gone and have to be reinstalled. Wifi access and mail accounts etc need to be set up again.
I don't have a 10 inch media pad but the 7 inch one had fast boot, which allowed flashing files directly from PC to tablet with nothing but a usb cable, no micro sd required.
Maybe that works here too?
Maybe it works. Starting the MediaPad with Vol+ button pressed gives me a "Enter Fastboot mode" message. The fastboot program on the computer didn't recognise the device however.

Hurray! With the firmware from 21.11., both problems are solved.
More or less. Maps and Earth work as they should. In Skype, video with the front-facing camera works, but switching cameras makes problems. And the microphone is louder, but audio is really disappointing quality. As also witnessed by the audio recording app.
Anyway, in total the advantages outweigh the problem of having to play World of Goo from level 1 again.

For what it's worth, I bought mine on a trip to the PRC, and it came witha NEMA 1 plug. I suppose you got the same. Two parallel flat blades. This is originally a North American standard, which might make it easier to find an adapter. It seems within China, a bunch of different standards are in use.
The Wikipedia article on power plugs and sockets is a good resource b.t.w.

remove Retail Demo Mate 10 Pro

Hello Guys. I just purchased my Mate 10 Pro but it's running on retail Demo.
I tried to remove the app by disabling the retail demo app as administrator and Unistall it but it failed.
I also tried installing the firmware which I got from getdroidtips. After creating the dload folder in the internal storage I moved the update.zip to it and shut down my phone. I pressed both volume buttons and the power button. It started flashing the firmware but after 5% it tells me that it failed.
Any other ideas guys?
You need to rebrand the phone. Your phone is demo branding, so without rebranding it will remain demo.
See this thread:

There is only one solution for rebranding the Mate 10 at this time, and it isn't free. The only other thing I can think of would be getting the bootloader unlock code, rooting the phone, and trying to remove/disable anything demo-related, but you'd end up with a severely butchered phone. How did you end up buying a demo model anyway?

I bought it over the internet cheap. Of course I was suspicious but when I got the phone it came out that it was a real one. Only the demo software makes it unusable.
I need to open an PayPal account in order to do that.
I have some questions. How do I get the bootloader code?
I don't use Windows but Mac. Do I need windows 7 at all because my phone is recognized by ADB on Mac and I can give every command from there too.
After I open up my bootloader will it be again locked after the procedure? And the last one is do I receive OTA/security Uptades when I am done with everything?
Sorry for such many questions and thank you in advance for your help.

Where did you buy it? For how much? Let me know how to get a cheap one too! I need more test devices. I don't care if it's demo branding.
You'll need something like Parallels/VMWare on your Mac to install Windows to do the procedure.
You can get the bootloader code from Huawei, but I think they're unlikely to let you get it for demo units.
If you check the thread linked to above, you can find the tool/method which doesn't require you to unlock your bootloader, in case you're not able to get the code. But it will require Windows, and it's not exactly easy. Still, you only need to do it once. Afterwards, yes, you can get OTA updates, but they might not be pushed out very quickly by Huawei, based on experience with the Mate 9 series.
Anyway, if you're going to be using FunkyHuawei, it's probably best to continue the conversation in the FunkyHuawei support thread.

Question about Widewine Level for DRM streaming contents - Netflix HD

There is some owner of this tablet that can confirm if this tablet has widewine level 1 (using drm info app) and if it can play netflix in HD, and at which resolution playing test patterns on Netflix? It would be very useful
I have the pad (10.8") and a Netflix account. Point me to the correct test to play and I'll give you all the info you want. As far as I know, sadly, it won't play in HD. But do tell me what you want me to try.

Just search for test patterns, play one of them and look at the resolution reported on the right top corner. Report it here, thanks

It only supports level 3, e.g., no Netflix and amazon HD for whatever reason.
I checked with the app drm info.

This is pretty much unbelievable, considering they called the product Mediapad and Netflix comes preinstalled.

Actually... I went to test as requested. Tapped on Netflix icon (comes preinstalled). Got a message stating "you need to update the app". Tapped that. Went to Play Store and it says my device is not compatible with the app. If I search for Netflix on Play Store, the official app does not come up in results. Bootloader is unlocked but I'm not rooted.
I have no problems running Netflix and it does not say not compatible.
@gorman42 did you check whether your device still passes SafetyNet? Most likely Netflix is using SafetyNet to check whether the device was modified and then it's not installing.
Extremely disappointing as I really need to replace my Nexus 7 (2013) tablet which DOES support HD streaming... I've read supposedly that L1 support can be added via software update, but who knows if Huawei would ever be motivated enough. If you google around you can see people clamoring for L1 for various Huawei devices.

One plus require you to ship the phone to them in order to update it to L1... So maybe a software is not that straightforward

Oof barely better than nothing I guess. RMA for a tablet would be less disruptive than a phone at least.

Yup, CTS profile match failed. Any fix? I have a regular NetFlix subscribtion, this is disappointing to say the least.
Just having the bootloader unlocked is enough to trigger this? Jeez...
It's kind of ironic, considering that once you have root you can then hide root, fix SafetyNet... I unlocked the bootloader as soon as I received it, as doing it requires formatting everything and I wanted to avoid that in the future (hoping for root).
@gorman42 No, I don't know how to fix but I had a similar problem with my current phone. After installing Magisk everything is fine now ...
Btw. I got my sht-w09 "Schubert" device today, not having it unlocked. Did you register as a developer to get your unlock code or how did you unlock your device?

I followed the procedure on Huawei website, yes. To install Magisk on this we need root, don't we?

No, not realy as you can install Magisk Manager (which doesn't need root permissions) and from there you can patch the boot image ...
But only theoretically speaking as I didn't test and as I am unsure that our device is supported yet. If something fails there's a risk for a bootloop and one would need to install at least a clean boot image. A bit risky without a further net of security. I'll need to inform myself a bit more about the Huawei devices and Kirin 960 ...
Also... isn't it strange for the app to come up as not compatible with the device just for the bootloader? I suspect the reason is not SafetyNet. I've seen apps refusing to run in the past, but never apps not being downloadable from Play Store. Am I wrong?

Ok. It's 720x480.
I had to uninstall the preinstalled version and install the apk from here: https://help.netflix.com/en/node/57688
Pretty unbelievable...
It's a bad joke. I'm returning it. I didn't believe it but it's true, it doesn't support wivewine and it's a 400€ device. The thing just gets worse when I think that my nexus 7 (2013) has it.

Absolutely, it's f*cking ridiculous, i won't buy this tablet for this reason. The only recent tablets in the official netflix HD devices list, are the galaxy tab S2 and S3, i'm thinking of buying an S2, but I hate the fact that it's 2 years old and with 3gb ram.

I debated with myself for long hours. I've just activated the return procedure on Amazon. I don't think it's correct to justify this unacceptable decision with my hard earned money.
So long Mediapad M5. Maybe next time don't advertise (and name) something as a media tablet with HD screen if you intend to cripple it to SD resolutions for video streaming.
Can this be solved through an update by Huawei? Or it is a problem that will remain in time.It makes me doubt a lot to buying it

Google Play Store (Chinese Variant)

Whats the state of installing Google services, including the play store, on new huawei devices (I am specifically looking at mate 20 pro).
Does anyone have any info at all?
Thanks
Update: We have conflicting reports of people able to do it, and someone saying they have tried it and it crashes when opening and running youtube caused a message saying that GMS services were not installed.
So really, we are back to square one and have no idea what is actually going on.

Not sure about mate 20 Pro, but other Huawei devices such as nova 3i bought in China can install Google play store directly from download, without any additional hassle.
Sent from my Huawei Mate 20 Pro using XDA Labs
I just got my LYA-AL00 delivered the other day. The seller mentioned that Google Play Services would not be installed, but it was.
Some sellers state that they will set it up for you, but mine stated that he would not, and it was still sealed.
Most of the Google apps were not installed, but I believe the Play Store was? (I could have misremembered on this one, though..)
If you get one that's only missing the Play Store, it's easy to grab from Huawei's App Gallery. Set or change your Huawei ID region to one that is supported (if yours is not, it will guide you to change it).

Thanks for the speedy reply.
So other Chinese Variant Huawei phones can install Google Play store as the apk, along with google maps and such and run as if it were an international version?
Is the GMS (Google Services) installed by default on the device?
Do you have any source or something I can see to confirm this?

I am not too sure about the details. I think the GMS is pre-installed. My wife (currently in Italy) is using a Huawei nova 3i she brought from China TMall (the biggest Chinese online market). She installed Google play store, drive, maps, translate, photos, etc without any issue. Just download play store apk and install then download the rest from the Google play store.
A friend in Thailand using the China Variant Huawei nova 3 also had no issue installing Google play store.
Sorry that I have no creditable source for your reference. It is all my personal first hand experience. I am sure if you dig around more on Xda or Weibo, you can find some clues. Or you can try your luck asking the China retailer if you can install Google Play store on the m20p.

It was factory-sealed, as best as I could tell with the plastic wrapping.
This particular seller said that he would not offer to install it for me. He said it would not be on the phone, but Google Play Services appears to come pre-installed.

When you open AppGallery, it'll have you set up your Huawei ID and choose a region. I chose United States, and it said the app was unavailable in the region, but also displayed the option to change the region.

My m20pro is bought in Singapore. No glue gate or green screen bleed so far.
No idea if my screen is BOE or LG.
From what I heard on Weibo, 6GB 128Gb Variant in China have a 1 in 3 chance of getting LG. The remaining 2 chances are BOE. The 8Gb 128Gb and 8Gb 256Gb Variant in China should be all BOE screens.

A simple test is just to drip water onto your screen edge to see if there is any green tint.

It's been reported it can take 3-7 days gradually getting worse before you notice it, so try this agian in a week and see.
So - this means westerners in China can buy, right? I was worried about Huawei's very recent bootloader locking changes may mean that their phones are less likely to be able to use Google app.
This is confirmed? Simply upload vpn apk - change internet region - then download Google play from huawei app store variant, yes?
Thank you greatly if so - I can go ahead with 8gb purchase without massive worries about ending up with a lemon.
Tried a Mate 20 Pro in a Chengdu store last night.
Was able to install Google Play Store BUT upon trying to open it immediately crashed. Subsequently installed YouTube. After opening got the message that GMS was not installed.
There was an install GMS button which I clicked, however, nothing happened. Had no VPN however, so if nothing happened because no VPN, or because it won't work even with VPN i'm not sure.
I was under the impression that installing GMS required unlocked bootloader, which seems hard with the Mate 20 Pro?

The previous two users I was talking to, plus another one on reddit has told me that they are able to get it working without downloading anything else.
I have not seen visual proof, just anecdotal so take that with a grain of salt.
Also whats the return policy in china? I'd think it would be worth getting one and returning if it cant?

You cant access Google in china without the VPN so I feel that would be a reason it wouldn't work, but I wouldn't expect it to crash.
Are you able to try again with a vpn? There are many free ones that don't require a set up, just to check. Also are those phones running a demo software or something?
Also, maybe asking them if they know, its unlikely but always worth a shot.

No returns policy, and no stock in stores atm.
Yes, they were demo units, but they defs didnt have GMS installed which has me worried as others have said installing GMS requires root access.
I wont have time to go back to store and try again with VPN
That said the store staff said you could install googleplay on the phones, but not sure to what extend I trust them.
Also have to be aware that even after changing language to english somethings will be in chinese e.g. hivoice App

1) Did playstore and google stop working completely on the 8x max? Is there a solution?

3) Will it get Emui 10 in the future?
4) Do you suggest I get it?
plzzzzzzzzz help my phone apps not work at all after an update
Hey Everyone,
Same problem here, it looks like the last update somehow wiped access/rights for the Google apps, that are now not functional (maps and maps based apps like citymapper/Uber and so on, YouTube, Gmail, G agenda, G drive, etc)
I had installed GMS when I received my phone from Hong Kong, to install the Google apps, and it worked fine. But reinstalling it won't do a thing as it has to do with the latest update.
Having a look around, it looks like the only solution is to downgrade it or install a new rom, but the problem is that for that you would need to unroot the phone if I'm correct. But this action is not as easy as on western terminals, at least not free as far as I could see online.
It seems like this problem is only from Chinese originating terminals, so it shouldn't be an issue if you get a phone that was for the western market and should work fine, but I'm not 100% sure. Emui10 neither, but is unlikely.
Finally I contacted customer service and they told me that Chinese phones are not made for the western countries, that they don't provide global ROMs and that they deter people from flashing phones as it could "damage" the terminal... BS.
All in all, it's a great phone, but now I'm left without any solution and few to no developers to come up with a solution as it's kind of a "niche problem". There are probably solutions from Chinese Dev but of no help for us.
The lack of solutions online makes me realise that I have to probably have to get a new phone to carry on using Google apps, which we all became quite dependant from.
Let's wait and see if any dev comes up with something, but I doubt...
