Power button delay caused by Google Assistant (9.0 Pie) - Sony Xperia XZ1 Guides, News, & Discussion

Sony seems to have added a double tap shortcut for the Google Assistant on the power button. This causes a short delay when opening the display. Did anyone find a way to disable this?

Go to settings -> system -> power key behavior -> none

I don't know if it's a placebo effect I'm having, but changing it to none only disables the Google Assistant. The delay is still there. Hope someone confirms this to me, it kinda irritates me.

I was also having this exact issue.
Immediately after going from Oreo to Pie, I was shocked at the delay (even with the power key behavior set to disabled).
Not sure if I am just getting used to it, but it doesn't seem as slow as when I first disabled the setting.
Do you still feel a delay after using it for some time? Shortening Android animation speeds also helps to make it faster.

Definitely still noticable if I look for it, but I got used to it. I like the animation speed so rather not speed it up. I still hope that they fix this next patch.

There is some specific timing to it. If I wake the phone after it's been sleeping for a couple seconds, then there's almost no delay waking and unlocking.
But if I press the power button twice consecutively (or within a couple seconds), then there easily at least a .5 second delay.

[Q] Is the Z2 just REALLY slow to respond?

I've had my Z2 for a day, and before I bought it I read a review that measured phone reaction time between when the screen was clicked and when the phone started to react and it was DOG SLOW. Now I'm definitely experiencing the same. I mean there is noticeable lag when clicking something (like the Home button for example) and when the phone actually starts to take action. Is this normal? Is this just due to Sony's Android Customization?
Really?!! My experience is exactly opposite. I think the phone's touchscreen is too sensitive.
So I usually type wrong... ( Maybe it's my personal problem)

Yeah the problem isn't sensitivity, it's responsiveness. The screen sensitivity is fine, it's just that the time it take between when I click the Home button and the point at which the Z2 actually STARTS to close my current app and bring me to the home screen seems WAY too long to me. Not sure if the review I read and my experience is normal or is the reviewer and I both have phones with issues.
I see... I misunderstood your words~~
Did u upgrade the firmware ? OR the problem had existed from the beginning?
Coz it's seldom that a new phone has such...lag
My phone did update when I started it for the first time, but I don't know how it was before the update since it was brand new.

For myself, I usually do a factory reset after a OS version update~ otherwise waiting for the next update released by official .
I always do a factory reset on system updates. Prevents a lot of weird things...

Maybe its the default animation of the default launcher. Personally I don't seem to have this problem, when I press the home button it goes straight to the homescreen, there is no delay but I don't use the default launcher.
Go into developer options and turn animations off, maybe this might help you
Settings>About phone>Build number, keep clicking it until you unlock developer mode

Nope. My Z2 responds very quickly. It may be a problem with your device.
Same goes, although i curently have a very defective unit, everything is very rapid
I agree with @nreuge this could be a fault with your device

My z2 sometimes lags too, not much, but I can feel it,
How about a backup and a hard reset then? It helps to that most at-times.
Definitely more sluggish than the HTC One M8 and iPhone 5s. It isn't as bad as the Galaxy S5 though.

Its far from sluggish, and the speed at which home button reacts to your press isnt really a deciding factor in phones performance..
Thanks for the responses everyone. I did a factory reset and it did help a bit. I guess the phone just isn't as fast and responsive as others on the market. It's a far cry from the Nexus 5 and the HTC M8, but I'm sure that over time I'll either get used to it or flash a custom rom on it.
The Z2 isnt as slugish as people have mentioned
I can play almost all games around -40-60fps
If you cant acheieve this and have no lag at all lag through home or navigating apps, your unit is probably defective

You're right it's not, but a Snapdragon 801 shouldn't hesitate to go to the home screen when you press home.

This has nothing to do with gaming performance. I can play all games without any stutter, but as soon as the home button is hit or the recent apps button is hit, it will hesitate before opening or going to the homescreen. It's not "defective", something is just making the phone sluggish.
OP, I removed the small apps launcher from the recent apps panel and it seems to be a bit faster, though still not instant.
Ya, it is not about playing games, it is these little things, like home key, camera app, setting manual, recent app key.....
the z2 is a bit slow and lags compares to other flagships. It is not too bad, but the lags are there. It doesn't happen all the time.
If you are coming from dual core phones you will not notice it, however if you are coming from M8 or S5, you will notice it.
Hopefully the next update will fix this.
No phone is perfect, overall I am very happy with the z2, except the audio......:crying: I will get used to it.
If you need to speed up the phones response try altering the 'Drawing modes' for Window animation, transition animation and animator duration scales.
To do this you first need to activate Developer mode.
Go to Settings/About phone and at the very bottom of the list tap on Build number eight times.
This will bring up a small warning informing you Developer mode is now active.
Next, go back to Settings and you will notice in between Printing and About phone you now have 'Developer options' available.
Tap on Developer options and scroll down to the 'Drawing' section.
Where it says:-
Window animation scale
Transition animation scale
Animator duration scale
Change these three settings from 1x to .5x
You should now notice your phone is much snappier and responsive.

Pixelation and slow drawing on lockscreen only!

I have a minor niggle but wonder if it's due to something I'm doing wrong. I have full backup's of my TA partition and flash custom and stock rom's as and when I choose. I just have an annoying issue when i turn my screen back on it shows garbage pixels on the screen and slowly draws the screen til the bottom and then flashes to a properly drawn screen. Can I remove it or learn to live with it?

My test device - that I picked up very cheep as it had been dropped and the SIM reader no longer works - displays the same issue, I had always assumed it was because of the fall it had.
Sorry if that doesn't help you
like this?
http://youtu.be/oyv5QmD5uQA
Exactly the same issue thanks
Same here but my phone is allways in case and i never dropped it. Oh and factory reset or flashing another ROM is not solution.
Any ideas?
I can only guess that either the RAM fills up with the screen off and once it starts to clear when the power button is pressed it suddenly can draw faster, or it's because the CPU and GPU clock down and slowly ramp up on wake. I'll change my performance settings see if that changes things?!
I've changed the settings in performance. So goto settings, performance, profile and select performance instead of balanced or power save. This seems to have sorted the re-draw issue on the lockscreen, any change I'll let you know. Now I just need to get a basic knowledge coding/cooking rom's and start delving further into android!!

So it's actually software problem right? Not damaged screen or something inside the phone.

mine is a hardware issue. you will see that it is currently on cm12 but it has done that on Stock, 4.4.x custom and 5.0 CM/AOSP as well. It will only do this if it hasn't be used for a few hours.

Not quite random reboot

I notice that the double click of the power button still opens the camera in nougat and now there doesn't seem to be a way to switch it off. I've accidentally triggered this twice, hit home to close camera, then pressed the power button to switch off. Soon after on both occasions the phone has partially rebooted in my pocket, sticking on the Wiley fox boot logo.
Anybody else confirm this behaviour? Not something you do everyday I guess......
Hi Ratbags, I tried it for you... I never noticed that tapping the power button twice starts the camera, but indeed it does; however my phone didn't reboot (so it also didn't get stuck).
Hallo ratbags, i can confirm this behaviour in my Swift 2 Plus with Nougat Android. Noticed that randoms reboots some while ago and with your hint about power double click i am able to reproduce it.
To switch it off
Go to parameters
Use the search option and search gestures
Click on Gestures and then you'll find the option you are looking for

Thanks for that. I believe Wiley fox are bringing out an update to fix this issue. Strange you can only get to that setting by searching or is it hidden away somewhere deep in a settings submenu?

I didn't find it anywhere else so I think it's hidden
There's others hidden menu (and some are not even working at all - like battery percentage). I think that it's the trace of some modifications of parameters that weren't done correctly, or those parameters were disabled because the option didn't work well.
With latest update Build no. TOS118C the Gestures are available in Options Menu. The "not quite random reboot" seems to befixed too. Tested it several times and got no reboot since 3 hours.
Was just scanning the forum for any reports of random reboots as I've also been having reboots and it hanging on the white WileyFox logo screen.
Have noticed it more since the more recent official updates and have even gone so far as a full factory reset, however, I've had the issue reoccur several times since then (reset done earlier in week) so will be interesting to see if disabling that camera gesture will help
Beyond that I'm thinking possibly a corrupt or "worn" SD Card as I have a MicroSD card, used to extend the internal storage, that I think I used for a year or so in my previously Swift so possibly suffering some mild wear....

Get ride of screen fade in

Hi,
Is there a way to deactivate the fade in animation when waking up the screen, i find it very annoying . I like it to be instantaneous.
I know is possible to reduce the speed animation in developer options but it does mess with other animations not only the screen wake up.
This annoys me, too. There is a slow fade in when hitting the power button to go to the lock screen and using the fingerprint sensor to go straight to the home screen.
I believe this is my only gripe with the device. My Mate 9 was instantaneous on both fronts.
you must ctivate "developer options" menu (it is hidden under "about phone", you can easily find instructions for activation)
and there you shall find the settings for all parts of animation (transition, etc); if you set them on zero, then everything will become instant-quick, no fade-in etc

As I said in my previous post, the problem when reducing speed animation is that other system transitions like multitasking and dropping notifications panel are also affected and look horrible.
I dont know why samsung dont offer the option of deactivating this annoying fade in

As far as I know sammy are the only ones to implement this "feature" in their smartphones ....
I would have switched to another phone juste because of that "feauture" but there are many good things in the s9+ that make me keep it.

Question Android Accessibility Keeps Turning Off 3 Apps

I have installed several apps that need Accessibility set to On in order for them to keep working. 3 of those keep getting disabled by I guess the system and I have to go in and toggle that permission switch to Off and then back On again. It happens randomly, sometimes after a few days and sometimes after a few hours but when it happens it alway affects those 3 apps together.
The 3 apps are Super Status Bar, Power Shade Premium and Energy Ring. Others like Button Mapper or Nova (for doubletap to sleep) are unaffected.
Those apps are excluded from battery optimization, I'm not rooted (yet) and I don't have any "app killer" running. Googling was no help so I'm hoping someone here has an idea. I'm guessing A12 is doing something shady here, but how do I stop it from happening?

I'm wondering if you've entered Power Saving Mode before this problem occurs? At least 2 of these apps will be killed when Power Saving Mode is entered and you have to restart your device to get it going again. Maybe it also kills the Accessibility service? Not really sure, just throwing it out there.

No, Power Saving Mode is disabled and the battery wasn't low enough for it to even have kicked in. When it happened (twice!) yesterday the battery was 40-50% both times. Adaptive battery is disabled too so battery "shouldn't" be causing it in any way.
Thanks for replying though
Just a small update:
Oddly enough since I started this thread it hasn't happened again
I did sideload that mid-month update right around the same time of my post, maybe that fixed it ... no idea really, I'm just glad it's not happening any more
