Battery getting less usage time after 2 weeks? - Huawei Mate 20 Pro Questions & Answers

Hi guys, anyone experiencing what I am saying in the title? A decrease in battery life after 2 weeks. Ar first it was amazing, I never had a phone with such SOT and usage time in general. And starting few days ago, battery depletes faster, lasting at maximum 24 hours or such. During first cycles I got easily 30 hours and 8 SOT. I dont have any new apps or so.
Do you know any possible reason? Did it happen to any of you?

Phone has memory leaks, it should be fixed in a future update, it also have laggy animations for me when using new gestures.

Thank you, most probably you are right..

No such issues with the first one I had. It must be an app. I use on screen navigation buttons, and Lawnchair launcher but, I dif not have batter issues with it.
I got around 8-10 SOT over 36 hours/.

I got exactly the same in the beginning. I cant figure out what is changed...for sure no app seems to be the culprit according to the battery status.. But it was my first thought..

I had my first handset (#gluegate) for just over 3 weeks and noticed the battery life was gradually getting slightly worse, although even when it was brand new I was only getting 14/15 hours of above average use.
Just before it got returned I was getting around 12/13 hours for the same usage.
I'll see how the new one performs.

So I might not be crazy after all...

If you likely updated the Google app on November 19th, that new version has been reported by somebody to have apparently increased the battery drain.
However it's hard to tell if this is the actual cause.
Personally I didn't update that app (knowing the possible problem) and currently don't suffer of any reduced battery life.

For sure I did that...well...waiting for a fix.

People are saying they get 30hrs from usage of 5 hours, I get about 20hrs of maybe 5 hours usage. Can't be without phone, stressed its no cheap phone.

May be can try clearing cache, i feel the same after 9.0.0.146 update. One member here advise me to clear the cache which i did, it seem like better now.

So my replacement handset that I've now had for a few weeks can comfortably get 14/15 hours of moderate to heavy usage and still have 20-30% battery left.
Very happy with the phone overall. No piece of technology will completely please everyone but I think the M20P is outstanding in so many ways.

Yes what cache are we clearing up? Is it the Google play services?

After I installed a 3.party launcher and used adb to uninstall the hisearch and default launcher battery time has been awesome. The device can handle 48 hours without charing and heavy usage. A ton of stuff syncing and 8+ hours of sot.

Uninstalling hisearch does not do anything to warranty as it is a system app right? Or does it do anything to functionality?

No, if you factory reset it will come back. I think you can actually disable it by ADB instead of fully uninstalling it, so if you wanted it back you could just re-enable it. If you uninstall you can only get it back by a factory reset unless you are rooted apparently. Just make sure you have another launcher installed before doing either.

Had this phone for about 1 month now and yesterday I got a whopping 12 hours of SOT with smart resolution and brightness set to auto around the halfway brightness point. Wifi and network were connected at all times and made a couple calls and about 3 hours Spotify, watched a ful movie, some YouTube and many hours of social media and browsing... Im blown away by the battery life.

I've had mine for 5 week's, had 9 hours SOT with 17 hours off charge, wifi, mobile data, location rotation auto brightness set automatically, watched 1 hour YouTube quite a lot of Fakebook. Still had 20% battery left.

I have found a higher drain if I sync google photos (so i turn this off and only turn it onto sync once a month) also my works emails can eat the battery more so I turn them off unless I need the latest ones.
Other than that have found the battery life very good!

Recent Battery Drain

Today i noticed a crazy drain my my battery than previously recorded.
Here's a TL;DR except from a battery meter report.

2011 Dec 20 10:03:50 1324411430 61
2011 Dec 20 12:33:51 1324420431 30
Based on this, the 2.5 hours from 7.30 till 10.00 the batter lost 11% charge from 10.00 till 12.30 also about 2.5 hours, the battery lost 31% charge. Just wondering if anyone else experienced this today (or recently) and has any advice on what i can check for.
The only app i know of that updated today was Google+. Has anyone experienced today's update being more of a battery hog? If so, is there a way to downgrade?
Thanks

Thanks for the reply. Darn. I was hoping on something easy to blame... especially since i knew i updated that app today. but yeah.. 30% in 2.5 hours is pretty unacceptable... especially when i've gone 24+ hours on a charge before.

Someone else suggested that the Facebook App might have activated the GPS and left it running. I'll have to play with that and see i guess. Make sure the GPS is off and test the battery.
I wish i could go 24 hours on a charge, current battery, 4h 49m - dislay 50% 1h 11m and phones been charged a few times probably 45 mins charge. Now at 16% that's usual too... idk if its a straight talk thing or what but its ridiculous, first android phone and i miss my iphone 4's battery life.
I have been running the latest Unnamed, and it was running perfectly until I actually installed and ran a BLN app (though I was also running Llama, a location-based profile modifier.) Started from scratch with a fresh Unnamed, and battery life is back to normal...10h batery, 58% remaining, display 41%, Android OS 30%. It was either BLN or Llama causing Android OS to take the majority of my battery...I assume a wakelock issue but I did not do any further investigation.

I've also been experiencing horrible batter life lately (bought it 3 weeks ago). I'm at 18% after not even 10 hours. 20 minutes of calls, 15-20 texts or so, 3 email accounts. Bluetooth on for a couple hours during my commute.
I'm stock and unrooted (until I decide for sure I'm keeping the phone).
I uninstalled Facebook, NoLED, Skype, turned of Hotmail calendar sync and GPS as per the battery life post.
I have Google on autocync for gMail and Calendar
66% in Deep Sleep.
I do run Executive Assistant (<2%), but it's way too useful for me not to use it.
I was getting ~20 hours last week. If anything, I've ostensibly made changes for better battery life. I have no idea what's going on.

Main reason i asked separately was because the battery drain just suddenly got x3 worse than what i'm more used to. I kind of panicked. Will try and do soem further testing as time allows.

If you haven't already, download better battery stats to see if there are any offending apps or wakelocks that are causing the excessive drain.

Yep, did that (awesome app, BTW). The one that took up the most time was the bluetooth PBAP, but it was 2 hours which is my roundtrip commute to work. Nothing else seemed to take up a significant amount of time other than the sver stuff. Although I guess those small things add up. I think NoLED was a huge culprit. People seem to love it, but perhaps I set it up wrong. I'd like to re-install FB and see if it really wasn't that big of a battery hog.
Anyway, after uninstalling those apps I mentioned above, I'm at 90% after 5-1/2 hours. Yesterday around this time I was probably somewhere around 60%. I'm still using Executive Assistant for 3 email accounts with frequent autopulls, active sync for Gmail and Google Calendar, and a few phone calls. I didn't go to work today, so that's 1 less hour of BT for the morning, and I've cut down onmy screen time but it's still a huge improvement.
I just may keep this phone after all.
GOOD NEWS EDIT:
I'm at a little over 24hrs with 43% left! Granted, I curbed my use to try and get a hold of what was going on with my battery: 30 min of calls, only 45 min of screen time, and a boatload of texts.
I realize the screen time is minimal, but it's an amazing improvement on my idle drain, which was the biggest problem. My phone actually goes into deep sleep! I forgot to check the % before I went to bed, but in the past, if I didn't plug in my phone at night with at least 30% charge, it was usually dead in the morning, or with single digit %s.
As far as I can tell, the culprit seemed to be NoLED. (Not trying to slam it or anything, because it's a cool program, but I'm pretty certain that was the issue.)

[Q] Battery Problem

Hi
I bought this phone 2 week ago. already when my phone was in sleep with airplane mod , the percent of my battery was instant about 10 hours. but now when my phone is sleep with airplane mod and i dont use it , the percent of battery is decrease about 10 percent in 10 hours. i do factor reset. but the problem was not solved. i guess when i update the phone in update center, this problem was appeared. now the version of my phone is :
android version : 4.4.2
software version: V10c-AME-XX
how i can solve this problem? and how i can to return to my first version software and cancel my update?
Try getting your previous rom and flashing that, it might just work

I don't think Your issue is software-related. I've got my Mini for over a month now, and I was dissapointed about battery life on it's first days. Now I think battery shaped its own and there's no problem with battery at all - it lasts two days with moderate data usage.

How long did it take for the problem to solve itself?
I got my phone about a week ago and I was suprised that it was able to last almost 3 days before charging.
Currently battery life is just terrible (less than 24 hours while phone is practically idle, with low brighntness, disabled gps, wifi and data connection) which is quite strange because since then I have rooted my phone and got rid of bloatware.
I have read somewhere that you shouldn't allow li-ion batteries to discharge fully, unfortunately I did that unintentionally,
Is it possible that a single full depletion managed to damage the battery? Or is it possible that I deleted some crucial app?
Phone's electronics and software will protect the battery, so no worry about discharging.
Did you install any messaging app (WhatsApp, Viber, Skype, Tango, Facebook or similar)?
These are draining battery a lot.
No. I don't use those. I even greenified dropbox, pocket and some other apps,
I installed Busybox (I don't know if this is even relevant, honestly I have no idea what am I doing,
I just follow guides to achieve functionality I want )

I don't use custom ROM's, after factory reset my phone isn't even rooted. I'll check out BBS soon and post some logs, they might shed some light on the issue. Built in battery usage app shows that most of the battery (30-40%) is sucked by Android OS
Factory reset did help indeed but not for long, battery worked like a charm for 3 or 4 days but problem reappeared.

It depends on your usage and brightness settings.
Normally I keep my brightness below 40%.
If I play ingress in the sun with display at 100% brightness I will get the same results as you do.

Great sot without wifi
4 hours 3 mins sot 25% remaining . All on sprint LTE no wifi today with between 1/2 and full bars, usually full though. Insane coming from an s6 edge that would get maybe 2 hours before dying in the same conditions. Loving this phone. Very excited for kernels and ROMs to start hitting this phone

I'm happy to report that I have, mostly. I took into the att store and they ran a diagnostic check on it and told me that the quickmemo app was hitting y processor pretty hard which is strange because I have never used it (it also doesn't show up under battery usage). It can't be disabled but I forced stopped it. When I did force stop it my ram usage dropped by like 10% so I don't know what the heck that app is doing. The odd thing is it will occasionally start up again and I have no idea why. I did open the app and set the capture+ action to be handled by gallery instead of quickmemo and there are no permissions set for it, so we'll see what that does. I'll be watching it closely.
The biggest culprit I believe was my outlook app was having a contact sync issue. Once I went on the app and fixed that issue my battery life has been great. I hit my phone hard yesterday to try it out and while I only had around 4 hours of SOT when the screen wasn't on I was listening to music (probably at least 4 hours of music playback). I downloaded apps from the playstore, surfed the web, streamed some videos, took photos and lot of other heavy uses and it made it from 6am to 6pm with 10% left before i plugged in. I was pretty impressed.
So I say mostly fixed it because fixing the outlook sync issues helped a great deal, but that quickmemo app could still cause a little drain and I can't figure out how to stop it. I'll keep an eye on it and report back.

This is great to hear. I did what some people recommended and did a factory reset, installing all apps "by hand". And force stopping the quickmemo app saved some ram/battery as well. Battery life and stand by seem a lot better. Not great, but better. Gonna see how it fairs in a few days. If it's still bad, might get a replacement. I'm hoping for an unlocked bootloader on this so I can debloat the damn thing. That would help a great deal with battery. Thanks.
7 hours and 26 minutes so far with 48 percent remaining. Estimated time remaining is 6 hours and 11 minutes I've used it pretty heavily throughout the day and this is day one of using it on battery so I'm very very impressed.

The top three reasons for battery drain (with a non defective phone).
1. Screen on with full brightness.
2. Rogue application or data heavy application (email being a big one or apps that run on the background constantly).
3. Poor cell coverage area where phone is sucking up juice trying to stay connected to towers.
Best way to trouble shoot is to start with a 100% clean factory reset phone. Follow these steps
1. Reduce screen brightness as much as possible, using auto brightness helps, but you may have to adjust manually if it's at full ? in your location.
2. Don't install any applications at first. If your battery drain doesn't happen until after you install applications, then you'll need to figure out which one is the culprit.
3. Turn off the cell radio in poor coverage and see if that does anything. If your battery improves you know that's the issue. I know CDMA phones in poor coverage area suck the life out of a phone (Sprint and Verizon).
After that it's time to consider defective device.

Cell coverage i know is one reason while im in school. i swear that place has a jammer installed somewhere. with AOD ill watch the battery just drain itself. Im probably gonna do a factory reset today or tomorrow and see what comes of it.

Yes it's the 3a. I think i could get more SOT without gaming.
From full charge to zero, I could get about 10hrs of screentime consecutively browsing, but that's not how I use my phone. In 48hrs of 'normal usage' I get about 5hrs of screentime.
I do about 3-6 hours of BT audio streaming daily which is why there is a larger than normal screen off usage. Still nice average SOT. I have so many sessions because I try to keep my battery between 50 and 80% for longevity.
I get 8 good hours.
What does Android 10 Battery say? Screen usage since full charge? Also Full charge lasts about???
Mine says 1 day 11 hours of typical usage. I always charge at night so it has rarely if ever run out.

I got my pixel 3a a couple weeks ago and struggling the last week or so getting more than 3.5 or 4 hrs SOT. I did use GPS for a 2 hour drive home today but it's 3p and I'm down to 10%. Idunno what's going on.
Here is the other day :/

the app usage of 66% is a clue. maybe you got some crazy app eating up battery. if you have bluetooth and/or wifi scanning on continuously that can drain a bit. gsam can be setup to show which app is using most by doing the adb command. just select apps for the details if you have not already.

Check out the second screenshot in that link. I've setup this via adb and had that included originally but probably wasn't obvious

Here we are after factory reset and flashing the latest OTA from
https://developers.google.com/android/images
Still can't hit 4 hrs SOT. Not once. I really don't know what to do at this point. Incredibly frustrating with everyone else on this thread having MUCH better results.
GSAM is showing some pretty beefy wakelocks on that "RemoteSoundTriggerDetection" and "*alarm*", ActivityManager-Sleep, etc.
I bought it from Best Buy. Should I go up there and see if they'll replace (highly doubt it) ? Maybe flash a custom kernel?
screen on time is a function of what a person normally does with a phone. one way to get high screen on time is you could set display intensity to 25% and timeout to 30 min. if you need that number to be higher. just let the screen be on as much as possible. when you first got it did you fully charge it then fully discharge it then fully charge again? screen on time is about the last metric i ever think about. i don't understand at all why it's so important. i'd be willing to bet some users set intensity to 20% and time out to 30 min or always on and do very little else then they get s.o.t. of 8-9 hrs or higher and think it's great when it's a joke. that's the way i look at it anyway.

Not sure if you're replying to me but I'll answer anyway. Yes I fully charged it then fully discharged it then fully charged again when I first got it.
It's not the SOT that is so worrisome but the constant Android system and kernel drain on my device.
I'm getting worse battery life on my 6 week old 3a than my 2.5 yo OnePlus 5 which wasn't good to begin with. This device was lauded for having excellent battery life and I'm not seeing it.

It isn't that at all. I found using it for anything where the phone needs to utilize the GPU a lot, like gaming, drains battery substantially. "Light" workloads, like web browsing, using social media apps, streaming video, etc give you really good battery life. Once I start up a game, I see about 5-6 hrs compared to 9.5 hrs if I just stream YouTube, check the XDA app, email, Reddit, etc.

General Battery life thread

There is a battery thread in P6 Pro section, but we don't have an equivalent here, so...
How's your battery on regular Pixel 6? Can't post any data from my side, as it's still being dispatched....
with my normal phone usage I am ending up with about 30-40% at the end of the day. With my Pixel 5a I still got about 60% juice. I cannot complain. I've seen wild differences on youtube from others (both good and terrible).
My battery life seems to be just fine.
Mine seems fine, it's been idle more than anything and it'll probably be that way since I try not to use it too much. When I'm at work I can't really use my phone anyway, so I expect battery life to be strong.
I also have a battery app that monitors usage and health of the battery if anyone is interested.

Are you using Accubattery? If so, could you post your stats?

Yes I am. I only charged it once to 100 even though I know that's not good, but for first time I think it's ok.
I'm not sure i have enough stats to show since I've only used the app once to charge, but happy to share whatever info you need. Just let me know which screen to grab and I'll post.
comparison. Over 8 hours is pretty good.
I guess I can't complain.
Im getting about 9 hours of SOT. Using accubattery and this is while using youtube TV along with bluetooth (not using battery saver at all). The battery life is great on the pixel 6 pro and its a bit better than my s21 ultra.
proof
I'm guessing my stats are good? Idk where it got 4 sessions over the last 4 days from, but I installed the app yesterday and had it charged at 100% around 3PM. From then on I would use it randomly, mainly using chat through IM apps. I haven't done anything super battery heavy yet. I'm at 8% as I sit and write this...
Dayum. That's some iphone 13 pro max stats there lol.
It all depends on the connectivity, e.g. @android_dan is using 5G which is battery hungry, and also network reception is really low here.
I have huge drain from mobile network standby. View attachment received_785539938832034.webp
I tried many different things and seems that the problem is with esim card.
I hope they will fix that soon.

Even on 5G I have no complaints about battery life. I'm getting up at 4:30 am and going to bed at 10:30 pm with 20-30% battery. We've had some weather delays so I've been on the phone a lot throughout the day. No complaints here.
So I am using my P6 for 3 days and battery life is amazing when screen is on (I can get like 12 hour of sot if I would spend all day looking at my phone), but idle usage is pretty high for me - getting like 3-4% per hour while screen off on LTE, 2g disabled, AoD disabled.
Is anyone experiencing the same? Or maybe I still need to wait for Adaptive Battery's magic?

I get 5% drop over night while I'm sleeping and connected to wifi. All apps closed in the background. I don't think that's too bad in my case. Definitely let things "settle" after the first few days of use. I've seen lots of improvement in battery after having the phone for a week.
I tend to get thru a whole day no problem! I turned network preferences to LTE cuz my area doesn't have great 5g and I don't find it slow at all. And I'm on wifi most of the time anyway. At the end of the day I have somewhere between 7-9 hours SOT which is amazing! I watch lots of YouTube videos and listen to music throughout the day. Hope this helps!
for me, the battery is a tragedy, it drops in my eyes, I was able to get a maximum of 4h sot. On average, I have 2.5 to 3.5 hours of sot. I have a recommended 4G network set. I use 2 sim.

I am afraid that it will not happen, Google has always not paid attention to e-sim activities. Pixel 5 running 1xsim + e-sim lost animations, they never made it better

They're actively looking into the battery drain issue, and some folks have had success with doing a factory reset.

I was able to find out what was causing my phone to be active and never enter a deep sleep, which has improved the battery drain I was having. I'm still not sure why mobile network standby fluctuates on me; sometimes it'll be as low as 3% and others in the 20 when I'm not doing anything different at home.
