Edge Lighting Issue with Whatsapp - Samsung Galaxy S9+ Questions & Answers

Hello there fellow xda-developer users,
I can use some of your advice with edge lighting. It's a cool feature but it requires app to have a pop up notification. When using WhatsApp on screen there is no problem, but if you're using it while screen is off, WhatsApp pops up your message like huge window on your screen. And this literally a violation to your privacy. I couldn't find a private notification for WhatsApp or off screen pop-up solution for edge lighting. Since English isn't my main language, I uploaded a video so I can show you what my problem is :>
Thank you for reading my problem, have a great day.
Edit: If I disable show pop up window option in whatsapp, it gives notification while screen is on but doesn't give while screen is off.

A bit old post, but recently got Note 8 and having same annoying issue. Edge lighting only works with that goddamn popup thing. I just want it to flash when I receive a message without having to see the message on big window when unlocking the phone. Anyone found a solution for this?

[Q] How to Turn off Auto-screen on when getting text

I've searched everywhere on how to do this but can't find anything -- When your screen is off and you get a text the screen turns on...Where is the setting to turn this off??? My notification LED is enough for me to know I have a message, don't need my screen always turning on.

I don't have my edge yet, in the mail so I can't tell you on the stock messenger app, but on my current phone i use the app Textra (which is great, I highly recommend trying it out) and in the notification settings there is an option specifically for this. Can set it to turn the screen on when receiving a text or leaving it off. there is also an option to turn the screen on except when the phone is set to silent.

I just posted this same question, I've turned off the setting in the message app to "turn off pop up display" but the screen still turns on with a pop up message...I don't know what's going on lol.
I've been through the settings a dozen times. There doesn't seem to be a way to stop this from happening on stock messenger. I can confirm that using a 3rd party (I use go sms) stops it from happening once you set it as default messenger.

Yeah. I ended up getting Textra before you posted this - liking the customizable options so far. I've always used GoSMS in the past and Hangouts but this one is a bit cleaner.

Double confirming this. With Samsung's Messages app the screen turns on for me, as it did when I had the S3, though it's more bearable now that I can unlock the S6 with my fingerprint. Using Verizon's Message+ screen does not turn on. This is really the only strike against Messages for me. Message+ is a little more sophisticated, but not as clean looking. I think I still prefer Messages because it's cleaner and I like the vibration notification better (two short bursts instead of one long). Again, the screen turning on isn't a deal breaker for me because the phone stays locked without my fingerprint.
solution
This issue is because Samsung put in their own text messenger called messages rather than using the Google made one called messenger while using the same icon. You can download the original messenger off of the Google Play Store just search messenger and look for the one by Google. Once you switch to the one by Google that should not turn your screen on anymore, you may have to change a setting to make it that way. Since I installed it haven't had the issue at all.

go on to notification settings, scroll to messages, turn off allow notifications.
then go on messages app. click more then settings then notifications and turn the setting off.
the screen will no longer light up when you get a message.
the LED will flash though so you know. also if you use nova you can set the badge app notification so it will show when you receive a message but again the screen will stay off.

[Q] Edge notification without flipping phone

Hallo everyone,
I tried searching for an answer here on the forum but without success.
I recieved my S6 Edge a few days ago and found out about the Edge Notification lighting up when I recieve calls and messages.
But what stuns me is the fact I have to flip my phone and lay it on a surface before the notification light shows up.
What I would like to ask is, if there is a way to allow the Edge Notification to function when laying the phone on it's backcover?
I also use a different standard app. for messaging and emailing (hangout, Gmail), they don't appear to trigger the notification when I recieve a mail/msg?
Looking forward to hear from you guys
- Mike
Unfortunately I don't know the answer, but I would like this too.. I never want to lay my phone on its screen lol
No, the edge lighting only works when the phone is faced down.

Whatsapp & Edge Lightning issue

Hi
For those that have their phone already, do you have issues with notifications from whatsapp and edge lightning. I have setup my phone to have edge lightning come on when receiving new notifications. All apps work fine, just not whatsapp. Edge lightning is setup to always come on, but when the screen is off, then there is no notification from whatsapp. I get the sound, but no visual notification. When the screen is on, then whatsapp will trigger the notification. I have tried all combinations of letting whatsapp notify me etc, but no popup or edge lightning when I get a whatsapp when the screen is off. Ideally I would like edge lightning to notify me....Anybody having this issue?
change your whatsapp popup notification setting to "only when screen off". the edge lighting should work if ur phone is locked and faced up.
however when facing down, the edge lighting will not work anymore (probably the sensor is being blocked). i can't seem to find any solutions for whatsapp edge lighting to work when phone is facing down though.
For me, when the screen is blocked and I receive a WhatsApp call I have to unlock the phone to be able to answer. I guess it's a permission thing, they complicated things lately.

I will try the whatsapp setting....
so far it looks like it is working correctly...thanls
So how do you fix that? I have the same problem, and it is new; it wasn't that way until a few days ago, so something changed!

'Curved Panoramic Light' doesn't work properly

Hi everyone ,
I've got the chinese Find X 256Gb (PAHM00) and there are issues with the 'curved panoramic light'.
If somebody is calling me, the screen lights up, showing the number and the 'curved panoramic light' lights up too.
But the main problems are the messages and notifications. If my phone lays down for a while (standby) and i recieve a message, the screen lights up showing the message on a banner and turns off after a few seconds, no 'curved panoramic light'. I tried several different settings/options, but there are always only two results: 1. as mentioned above, 2. the screen stays black and the phone just rings, no 'curved panoramic light'.
One time, the phone was in my pocket and i recieved a message, I immediately pulled it out, the screen was black and the 'curved panoramic light' lit up, but only two times. I can't reproduce this.
What's wrong with my phone? I even did a factory-reset, but without positive results.
Does anybody have the same problems or a solution?
Thanks.
@Oppo-newbie
Settings --> Smart & Convenient --> Gesture & Motion --> Turn off "Screen-off Gestures"
This option is already turned off. The 'Raise to Turn On Screen' is off too.

Panoramic ligth does work here, but only 2 times. I believe that's normal. So don't expect it to keep flashing, it's just 2 times and that's it.. (Probably would kill the battery if it kept flashing.
No, Oppo says: 'When someone is calling or there are new notifications that just came in, the curved edges will light up, continuously.' ( I can't put in the Oppo link ) . On the website, they also say, that the curved light doesn't work if 'Turn On Screen Notifications' is enabled and I think that this is my problem, but I don't have this setting in my menu.
Same question i want to ask.
Any idea how to keep the light flashing until i read the message?
hope they fix Light Options...
I’ve only ever seen 2x for notifications and infinite for calls. I think you’re experiencing the feature exactly as designed
Same here. Could you fix it? I mean, if this is how it's supposed to work , it's pointless.

As for now, this feature is ridiculous. I couldn't find a solution. Hopping Oppo will fix it with an update.
By the way: can anyone tell, if it is the same for the 'global' version?
The Edge panoramic light is working like i had hoped it would. I receive the same problem as well. If anyone know which exact method to have the settings too, that would help greatly as I'm about to loose my mind with this phone and its mysterious operational system.

are you saying if you have lock screen magazine on it will work more effectively, please clarify thanks .
Mine works completely fine. Have global version CPH1871EX.
I have the screen clock on standby active and also the lockscreen magazine.
Also please check if the Turn on Screen for Notifications in set to OFF in the Notifications & Status Bar settings. Might be the reason why your display switches on instead of showcasing the panaromic notification light. BTW the notification light comes only twice over the edges and not more.
Here, I got it working after hours of try and error. Actually, it was a theme issue for me. First of all I turned off "Turn on screen for notifications" option in "Notification and statusbar" menu. This is what I did next:
0. Set lockscreen from the default theme
1. Turn on Lockscreen Magazine
2. Click on a like button, read a story
3. Turn off Lockscreen Magazine
4. Open Themes -> me -> my wallpapers
5. Set any wallpaper as lockscreen one

Notification panel

Hello, I am a proud owner of a Huawei mate 20 pro. Everything about the device is pretty much solid. I don't have much to complain about, other than the fact that, I experience a slight problem with the notification panel. Whenever, I play a game such as PUBG and I get a text message, I pull down the N. panel and everytime I do that, it doesn't fit onto the screen. This happens on landscape mode btw. Like, I can't answer my messages through the notification, because it gets pushed into this weird view. I can tap on answer, but that pushes my keyboard on top of what I'm typing, that way it's impossible for me to see what I'm typing.
I think it's because the panel is just too large.
This wasn't the case on both my Galaxy S8 and Note 8.
I will try and make a screenshot of this, the next time it happens to me.
Does anyone else also experience this issue? If so, is there a fix available? Thanks in advance.

I added 2 photos. The black one is the original Notification panel of the phone itself. The white one is from an app called power shade. You can see the difference in length.
