Nova Launcher Issue - Unable to set as default launcher... - Honor 8X Questions & Answers

Please help. I have followed many guides with no luck. Even after getting it working when going to home screen it keeps going to default.
Any advise? Thanks.

Hi, many thanks for the link, however, the issue is in the options, it does not have any option to choose or change launcher at all.
I have the Chinese import, could this be the reason why? I managed to get Google Play Store & Google services working but no option at all to change or choose launcher. I heard that Huawei did this on purpose via software, preventing people from using third party launchers.
Any other solution? Thanks.

You are right.
You can uninstall 'huawei launcher' through ADB. I have not tried it because I do not know if there will be any side effects.

have you set a pincode to unlock?
honor requires you to set one in order to use other launchers

Huawei built this in to the latest update on the Chinese version of this phone. And it took a lot of criticism so it dropped the 'feature' in updates for other parts of the world which followed the China version. I can't remember where now, but I read somewhere that the 'feature' will also be scrapped in the next software update.
Huawei described it as a security feature!

Actually recently with emui 9 amd new patches they are blocking use of 3rd party launchers. You can use it via settings- apps- default app and launcher as per wish.

I've managed to find a solution to this. You'll need to first download and install nova launcher. Then use adb commands to uninstall/disable the stock Huawei launcher. Once done, nova launcher will automatically be selected as the default launcher of your phone. Follow this tutorial it worked for me.

After 'ultra power saving mode' (Settings>Battery>Ultra power saving mode) works for you?
I install EMUI 8.2.0.141(C00). There is something other, but still I can't change launcher.

[Q] Good app to hide and also run (not disable) apps on ICS 4.0.4.

Hi Guys,
I am looking at a good way to hide apps from the list. I want the apps to be able to run (like Email) and do the sync, but not to display the icons in the list. I have seen that ICS comes with a "Disable" function for system apps, but it doesn't work for me because it also prevents the app from running.
I also want a way to launch the apps myself (through a hidden menu or command) at will.
I have tried things like Application Protection, which allows you to password protect the apps you want. However, since the icons are still there, it is still tempting for my kind to click and ask for the password.
Thoughts?

Where do I get the latest version of HeLauncher? What are other similar ones?
Will that change the UI of my phone? I love stock ICS UI..

Yes, will.
My friend installed on my phone. But you can found another launcher who does the same thing. Then, go to Settings -> Applications -> Quick Start and see the shortcut!

Thank you. I found the Apex Launcher, and that is accomplishing what I need. (A mix of hiding apps + launching apps through gestures).
GoLauncher also supports the hiding feature.
For running the app even though it is hidden you can put them on a (home)screen or folder before you hide them from the app launcher. They will of course still be there after you hid these apps from the launcher.
Have fun! :victory:
hi
is there anyway to do above without launcher?
i mean hide them while they also keep running but not using launcher?

Huawei Launcher

Hi ppl.
It is possible to block/freeze the stock launcher?
without side effects?
i would say yes:

I don't think you can disable the stock launcher or most of the Huawei System Apps. Freezing an app makes me think of Titanium Backup but you would need to be rooted to use that.
Unless you have the Chinese hardware model you can change default launcher like on any other phone. There isn't really a need to disable it or likely much benefit from doing that.

I think making changes to your phone OS using ADB commands is an increadibly bad idea unless you are a software engineer and actually understand exactly what you are doing. The Mate 20 Pro is increadibly fast as it is so what do you think you will gain by removing system apps?
It's your phone--if you feel like bricking it knock yourself out.
ok guys I have successfully removed emui launcher from my mate 20 Pro and using nova launcher now, but I am back on oreo style recents, any solution to that, cheers.

You don't need factory reset to bring back the emui launcher if you removed it with adb shell. you can always reinstall it via huawei's app store.
Removing the emui launcher causes gesture navigation to stop working, as well as the ultra power saving mode.

I think the question is how ? Unless he factory reset;
ok guys here what I did, initially I uninstalled huawei launcher (with adb commands) but it messed up a few things like phone went back to oreo style recents and a few more things went missing from the UI, I do not recommend uninstalling huawei launcher, but anyway I resetted the phone to get Huawei launcher back than did the following:
Go to apps find huawei home click and clear defaults,
Installed nova launcher,
give all permissions to nova, it also needs accessibility and admin rights as well as draw over other apps and allow notification,
from apps on your home screen or app drawer click on nova, for a very short time nova will take over,
very quickly go to apps again (this time nova will be your home launcher, for a short time though), long press nova icon a little menu will pop up "set" without wasting any time click set that will take you to a hidden list of default apps, click on huawei home tht will finally take you to set either huawei home or nova as your default launcher, click nova and voila...bye bye to huawei home, enjoy nova.
But please keep in my mind this procedure is for nova launcher I don't know about other launchers but I hope they act similar, cheers.
the problem still is...
when the huawei launcher is installed and you want to use nova AND you want to use gestures, the recents are completely ugly. everytime you swipe to home, you will see for a short moment the recents. that was a nogo for me because it just looked damn ugly.
so i uninstalled the huawei launcher, enabled the Huawei Gestures (which are not working on the bottom, only on the sides, if you uninstall the launcher), installed nova and installed N-Fluid gestures. Now its working like a charm, i dont care if the recents are looking oreo or pie style

Ram management on EMUI 9 is horrible when using nova launcher. Any fix?

If I use the stock Huawei home launcher, all my apps will stay open with no issues, but when using nova launcher, my apps constantly restart. Has a fix been discovered yet? I've read on Reddit that it's a common issue but haven't read about a fix.

I noticed that too. Much better ram management on stock launcher. Also on 3rd party launchers you can notice a blue tint on the app switcher and you can't tap the apps on the edges, only the middle one.
Huawei wants to stop using custom launchers, maybe it's a trick to get most users back to stock launcher.
other than not being able to expand over 5x5 grid i dont see any reason why anyone would wanna change from stock launcher to something else...specially when you can put material icons on stock launcher .... if you are facing issues with other launchers why go there.
on nova may be pull notification down gesture is good other gestures are helpful as well.....
oh and the battery usage on stock launcher is so minimal.... as compared to every other launcher out there.

Don't like the fact that I can't disable HiSearch and doesn't have a swipe down gesture to reveal the notification bar.

Had the same issue after updating to emui9, and using Nova launcher.
Only fix I've found is disabling Huawei launcher with adb.
My free ram was dropping down to 600mb and apps kept reloading when switching.
You also get back the old vertical scrolling recent apps.
Now ram stays the same as it was on Oreo around 2.5gb free, and apps stay in memory.

I have the same problem, my temporal solution is going to apps, search for Huawei Home and stop it. After stopping it, it will free a lot of memory, free memory will go up from 600MB to 3.2GB. I am doing it once every 2 days and I am not having any more app closing by themselves.
I should disable the app as it is recommended, but I do not have access to a computer at this moment to run the ADB commands.

Can the LYA-AL10 BL be unlocked and rooted?

Like the title says, it seems some sites are now offering BL unlock codes for the Mate 20 Pro. Can my LYA-AL10 (I *think* it's the Chinese version) be unlocked and rooted?
Also, if I root my phone, will I be able to perform the below tasks?
- set default launcher to Nova Launcher instead of EMUI
- flash a custom rom from the dev section
- Have face unlock work for logging into websites etc...?
I have the same phone and can run Nova without issue.
What roms in Dev section?
I'm using Nova launcher with all my devices since 2012.
With Mate 20 Pro I have 2 issues and I can't understand if they are Nova launcher related or they are EMUI/Huawei's issue.
1) Whenever I unplug the device either the homescreen or lockscreen wallpaper changes to default, and
2) after unplugging the device I can't use Google companion page. I have to run Nova settings, tap Integrations and then Nova Google Companion option. After that Google Companion page is activated.
I have to do this every time I unplug the device!!!!

Just recently got a Mate 20 pro and it surprised me Nova installed(w/ companion app) without a single issue. I normally run Rootless launcher but that wouldnt run. I did nothing special. Hopefully you guys figure it out.
I did own a Mate 20 and Mate 20x when they all first released and had nothing but issues then with nova.

How...? That's strange because the option to change default launcher to Nova Launcher is not there where it's supposed to be. And yes I do have Nova Launcher installed. That's really strange especially if you're using the same phone. Maybe different software versions?
As for the ROM, I believe there's only 1 or 2, so not many choices, but it's better than what I have now (A lot of "Hi-" apps that show irrelevant Chinese apps, inability to change default launcher, etc....)
It's a shame because the hardware is the best I've ever used, I've never found a phone I've liked better than this

Chinese variants of Huawei phones are not allowed to used any other launcher. Huawei's reason is because it protects 3rd party vendors from installing malicious launchers that steal your data. You cannot use your own launcher unless you unlock bootloader and install custom ROM. This decision makes no sense in my opinion and also the reason I will never buy a Chinese phone, especially Huawei, again (I am working in China currently). I paid over $1200 to not being able to customize it, which is ridiculous.
I am going to stick with Samsung for my next phone.
