Substratum + Magisk v18.0 + Pixel 3 - Google Pixel 3 Guides, News, & Discussion

Has anyone got any experience using Substratum on the Google Pixel 3 Rooted with Magisk v18.0 ?
I've installed the DarkCroc Theme which is meant to be Android P compatible, and apparently is on other devices but on my Pixel 3 the Settings screen swaps between the Substratum theme and the stock white theme randomly.
I'm thinking Google has done something different with the Pixel 3 theme or the way it's loaded in which is why sometimes it works but sometimes its overridden?
At the time of writing this, the theme is working, but I know if I reboot or open / close some apps it will go back to white (not sure what the exact trigger is).
But here are some screens of it working, for those interested....

Thanks for the reply, are you on a pixel 3?

I've been using substratum for quite some time, as well. Swift Dark and Black work fine without any unusual problems. Have you tried using a different theme?

Did you anything special for Pie? I have latest substratum, magisk 17.3, root permission given to substratum, and when I build and update overlays, nothing shows up under Manager. It says build first overlay to see something here.
I have tried few free themes (which claim Pie support) from store.
In fact, I don't see anything under Manager even with OP's darkcroc theme, which he seems to be able to at least run somewhat. So, what am I not doing? This used to work in Oreo on my U11+ without issues.

So, I uninstalled everything substratum and reinstalled. Now, I see overlays in Manager. But the theme still does not apply correctly.

Didn't do anything special. Just works for me ?
Also magisk 18 is out since a week back or so although I had it working flawless on 17.3 too

Steps...
1. Build and update the desired theme
2. Reboot
3. Enable desired overlays
4. Reboot

This does not seem to be working in latest substratum and latest Magisk module on Pixel 3. I have 2 themes that I want to install overlays from because Pitch Black seems to be FC'ing the Google Now and is terrible with Hangouts and nothing for Home. I "Build and Update" the Swift Black's overlay for these 3, and reboot. Neither of the 3 show up in Manager.
If I uninstall all overlays, and rebuild, the 3 show up but then, I lose Pitch Black and I can't add its overlays now.... I have managed to sometimes (1 out of 20 tries) get some overlays from 2 themes show up but I can't reliably do that.

I have Magisk 18 and Substratum working fine on a non XL 3 working fine with Swift Black. Maybe it's the themes causing the issue?

Swift Black works fine. I attached a few screenshots of my Pixel 3 with latest substratum and magisk 18 running Swift Black theme without issue. If you need more help, you'll be better off asking in the related support areas for each theme.
Here is the Swift Black support area: https://goo.gl/tpPji0
Sorry, I see there are multiple pitch black themes and some list pie as supported. I've not tried all of those. Try them separately before mixing themes. If they work on their own, your issue is from mixing. If they don't, then there's your problem.

Here's another of substratum with the apps you mentioned were not showing up.

Pitch black is for EMUI, not surprising that you're having issues in a non EMUI device.

I imagine if you find a dedicated area for pitch black, they'll tell you that is an EMUI theme and isn't supported on a non EMUI device

The problem is not with Pitch Black my friend. It does what it does on Pixel device, and I am fine with that. The problem is I can not have overlays from 2 themes show up in Manager, no matter how many times I successfully build them and reboot.
Its a problem with all themes including Swift Black (which I like too). Once I build a theme and reboot, I can't seem to add overlays from any other theme. I have had overlays from 2 themes active at the same time in the past. So, I know for sure that you can install multiple overlays from multiple themes. In fact, you can have multiple themes overlay for the same app and prioritize them under "Priorities". But right now, it doesn't even add the overlays for second theme in Manager.

That setting to is unchecked (I think that's the default and I did not touch it). What else could trigger this behavior?

No idea. If I check that option, I can only enable 1 at a time for each app. As soon as I enable one, the other is disabled. With that unchecked, I can enable multiple at once. Maybe try checking it and then unchecking. No idea otherwise.

I corresponded with folks on telegram and here is the update:
Alright, my problem is somewhat solved for me by deleting the magisk module, rebooting and letting it get installed again when you compile. Now, I can see some overlays from all themes. But some successful updates to some apps still don't show up in Manager after reboot. So, its not completely gone but I have enough for me to go on.

[Oreo] Universal PixelMod

This is a Universal Pixel Mod that will give you Pixel's rounded icon as a default system wide icon, and Blue accent color as well. This mod works as an overlay that will not modifying your framework-res.apk or any other apk, so you can use your ROM's unmodified stuffs.
Features:
Default pixel rounded icon (use pixel launcher, lawnchair, or any other launcher that support this)
Blue accent color on system wide UI
Blue Settings icon
Works along side with substratum
V2 changelogs:
Cleanup unnecessary codes from the original Pixel's overlay. All side effects of this mod should be fixed (HW button vibration, VOLTE, etc)
V3 changelogs:
Re-made from Pixel 2 XL 8.1 original files
Use this for 8.1 ROMs
Instructions:
Flash it from TWRP and clear data of your launcher (it is recommended to clean flash the ROM on the first install)
Re-flash after every ROM update (just dirty flash)
Tested on Kenzo with xyyx's Nitrogen OS 8.0.0
Should work on any other 8.0.0 ROMs as well

Of what?? lol??
I have discovered this before you sending this post. I grabbed the files in the download from a Pixel factory image, then copied them onto my Nexus 9's system partition, and it worked very well. I got round icons, blue accent color, and even the "Turn on Wi-Fi automatically" option in Wi-Fi preferences in Settings, which is an option that requires an ADB command to activate if you don't have the files.
So, this does work on all AOSP-based Android 8.0 ROMs. However, whether or not this works on arm devices (instead of arm64) is still an uncertainty.

Using Nitrogen 20171007 and a gapps with this mod.
And installed the O Launcher from here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/backport-pixel-launcher-omr1-4113793-t3646787

Explain "Perfect"
What do you want? A full pixel experience? You will need to install all google APKs like Google Dialer, google contacts, google message, google chrome, google clock, google calculator, google Photos, Gmail, Google calendar, Google Camera, etc. All of them except Google Dialer are available in playstore. For Dialer you can download the latest one from APKMirror.
Remember to change the default apps in settings after installing them all, especially the phone dialer app, otherwise you will get problems with incoming calls.
After that you can disable all AOSP apps you no longer need like AOSP dialer, AOSP message, AOSP calculator, calendar, etc.
You also need to change UI sounds, bootanimation, and splash screen, to have a better pixel experience

This one also enables Device theme in Display settings and also some "Gesture" settings, like Double tap to check notifications, but they don't work as of now (it would've been awesome, but that's what it is).
And in the Storage settings, the shared internal storage is still in the teal color.

Actually, device theme option in display settings will automatically enabled if you have at least 2 overlay installed. That option will let you choose between them.
Even if you're not using this mod, if you have installed at least 2 overlay from susbtratum, that device themes option will be enabled as well

[Oreo] Substratum Theme Compatability

Has anyone had any luck applying Substratum/other overlays on Oreo (specifically CRA1)?
I have Andromeda, Sungstratum, all that stuff installed.
Yes but it took a while to find out how it worked. I'm rooted BTW so I don't need Andromeda.
Compile & activate the theme.
Reboot.
Go to substratum - manager
Activate all overlays again
Reboot
That's how it works for me.

How do you root CRA1?
Just recently got the manual Oreo CRA1 update coming from Nougat on T-Mobile S8+. It is incredibly quicker and much more fluid.
On Substratum I'm on Swift Black Complete Edition, along with Material Black from Samsung Themes. On Nougat that worked buy using the "Sungstratum" add on from the Play Store. When I upgrade to Oreo 8.0, I was no longer able to see Sungstratum in the Play Store. Instead, Substratum asked for another plug-in to allow it to run fully, Andromeda. So of course, had to buy that too.
But anyway, it's working nice. Visually that is. After finally being able to set it up to where I need it. Although, I am only still trying to figure out how to get a dark overlay for the notification card. Haven't figured that out yet.
You will have installation issues of overlays if you upgrade to Oreo CRA1 because of the new different plug-in used to activate Substratum. In my case, here is what I had to do when I installed a new overlay from a new theme. The symptom is, I install an overlay, but it doesn't show in under the "Manager" tab. Only under the theme and in the orange color, so it's saying that it's disabled. No matter however many times I select the overlay and choose options and re-enable overlay OR change overlay status, nothing happens.
What I had to do was simply restart the phone, run the Andromeda client from my computer and then go back to the overlay in Substratum and enable it, only then does it enable and turn green. The overlay actually installls this time.
I hate that part. Sucks for when trying and messing with new overlays just to try them out, makes the whole process just a freaking hassle.
Now, to the real question. You know how to get dark notification cards? Maybe dark notification tiles for the lock screen ?? that would be awesome.

Yep. Search Coffee in the forums and install it. It will then be in your Samsung themes to apply. It will black out your settings, phone, contacts and notifications. The QS Tile color comes from the coffee theme. The actual icons are from a Substratum theme.

I've had no problems. I would disable your overlays before you apply coffee. Apply coffee and see if the notifications are blacked out. If they are Grey change the resolution on your display back and forth and see of that fixes it. If that doesn't rebooting should fix it. The only minor drawback to this theme is that Samsung wants to kill it after it's been applied for 10 minutes. To stop that from happening once you get the theme working properly go in to developer options and stop the themes app. Then go in to settings-Apps-Enable system apps and clear cache and data for the Samsung themes app and the themes app. It seems like a lot of work but once you've done it a few times it only takes a minute or 2. Any time you reboot your phone you will have to redo that process. Hope it works out for you. Reach out with any other questions.

This method worked for me. I agree this is annoying to have to restart the phone connect to the pc and run the andromeda application then go back in substratum and enable the overlays just to see the changes. But if you want it you'll do it

Black theme

I tried Swift Installer from the play store to try and get a black theme like I have on my Note 9. It works well. Keyboard does not them and email crashes if themed but all else works so far. Including quick settings and notifications.

The issue with substratum is that u need andromeda for non rooted devices and for that u always need to connect it to a damn PC.
It would be nice if someone can port the sammy theme app to this device and then you can build ur own theme just the way u like it with ThemeGalaxy.
Anyways I like swift dark over black.

Andromeda is not needed for samsung devices. I do agree though that theme store would be nice. Wtf is Samsung thinking with that?

Well I needed that for my note 5 and on my note 8 before a working custom rom was released for the note 8.
Maybe its different from device to device but I wasn't aware swift team made an installer. This installer is great and worked with no issues nor hassle so far.

Andromeda is required, at least on latest firmware on Tab S4.
Is there a Samsung themes app on the Tab S4, like on the Note8? I can't find it...

Just use swift installer as OP has linked. Using it and it's very nice if u r into the dark themes.
Just a heads-up that taking the new OTA while having System UI moded with Swift will cause System UI to crash repeatedly after the OTA installs and reboots. It's not the end of the world though, as long as you can run Swift Installer (I was able to get Nova Launcher's app drawer to open, but YMMV with other launchers). You'll need to uninstall System UI in Swift, and then you can install it again. Note that you'll have to swipe/tap away the pop up saying System UI has crashed countless times, but with minimal effort, you can fix the issue, and after a reboot, you'll be up and running again.

Samsung 'Good Lock 2018' (avialable in Galaxy Apps) has 'QuickStar' addon (also in Galaxy Apps) which lets you customise the notification quick panel - and it's free!

Settings get FC on every combination of icons, colors... I must uninstall it.
Keyboard works but keys are grey on grey, not possible to use...
Browser is good, but cant see letters on tabs...
All other perfect.
Any idea to help?
Thanks
I like it
I also tried swift installer but when applying it to the email app it causes it to crash everytime.

Looks like you have something previously installed that affects the statusbar.
Nothing comes to mind. I've disabled all other Magisk modules for the sake of it, no difference. The maximum still appears to be 5.
I've changed the locale, that also did nothing. Not sure what else could somehow interfere, this is a very barebones install. ?

This is the stock clock. I've tried disabled Nova Launcher, disabling all my modules (including Active Edge) and even looked at what was using superuser access for clues and nothing is really doing much. I've changed my locale back to English from French just in case.
Like I said I've kept it very minimal. Stock android 10 January patch.
I'm open to ideas to try and troubleshoot this if you're willing to give me pointers.

I'm afraid I've never seen an h between the hours and minutes before....if you are using french that might be the problem. I've heard of things that would not work with anything other than English. You might try deleting the edge sense module and try flashing mine again. Mine will definitely not work with the edge sense module installed.
Hi, tried again. Set my locale to English. Deleted edge plus module instead of just deactivating. Reflashed your module.
No change. Maximum of 5 notification shown in the statusbar. The notification dot is not here anymore but it doesn't go further towards the middle of the screen.
At one point I really quickly saw 6 notification when a new one appeared but then it dropped back to 5. It's so strange ?
---------- Post added at 09:31 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:24 AM ----------
I've tested some more. If I have 0 notifications at the moment and create 6 notifications they will show. As soon as I get 1 additional notification it will drop to 5 and stay like this. Clearing them I can start receiving notifications up to 6 again, but if I get 1 more than it drops to 5 again.

I forgot, on android 9 the SystemUIGoogle.apk is in the system/priv-app folder, not in system/product/priv-app. That's why it didn't fc. It wasn't applied.

It works great! Thanks! There's no way of telling whether you have 7 or more notifications, but a real icon is better than a useless dot.

Will you please create an Android 11 module of MoreNotations for the Pixel 3 ? Let me know if you need the system/priv-app/SystemUIGoogle/SystemUIGoogle apk and system/framework/franework-res.apk again.
I noticed that you've done this for other devices, but I don't see an Android 11 module for the Pixel 3.

Hello, I like the animation very much but I'm having one issue. (I am new to Xposed modules, although I've heard of them for a long time this is the first one I have tried) The issue I have is when I hit "show settings" it shuts down the program. Colors both work as will as gradient and random colors, just when I hit the show settings...
I have a OnePlus 8t running Havoc OS I'm pretty sure everything is up to date if you need anything from me in the way of logs or what not please tell me how to get those for you and I would be happy to.
Oh okay no problem I will try to fix it

Are you rooted ? If yes can you download logcat reader from play store, then in app search for matrixrain, open Matrix Rain without close logcat reader and reproduce the bug, and finally go back to logcat reader then click on three dots at top, and save logcat and send it here (there is a lot of "and"). Otherwise if you are not rooted the app explain you how to do, sorry to ask you that but I don't understand why it does that it's working with with touchwiz, aosp and oneui for me :/
I am rooted, and maybe forgot to add I am not using Google play services but using microg. Microg is working except I'm still trying to iron out unifiedNLP. Here is that logcat file.
@Jck0day works on oos 11. Only issue is it runs fast on pulldown of notification drawer, then slows by about 1/3 speed if left down
Also is it possible to add to recents also?
Worked for me ! Samsung S20 FE 5G OneUI 3.1. Android 11. I didn't think if was going to because I had tried your other module "notigif" a few months ago and it didn't work. Turns out if you restart system ui, which there's clearly a button for and your instructed to do so, they both work perfectly. Guess I should read directions.
Thank you for this! At first I tried installing it with Edxposed but it soft bricked my phone and got stuck on a continuous boot loop, thankfully I backed my phone up and got it back to normal. This time around I used Lsposed and it works flawlessly! On my Asus ROG 3 (Android 10) ! I absolutely love it, keep up the good work! Also, how did you change the colors of your notifications/icons on the status bar? Ive been searching for a module to do so, but not having any luck. I have gravity box, but the only option they have is changing the colors of the navigation buttons... If you can help with that, it would be much appreciated!

I had a suggestion, although if it where easily done perhaps you would have done so already, but how about instead of the rain consisting of letters of the alphabet, it be the actual symbols from the movie or something close to it?
Edit - I found this matrix font available freely on the web perhaps it can be added in the module.
