Do I have a Mi 8 Pro or Mi 8 Explorer? - Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro Questions & Answers

Ok. I am confused here. I bought a Mi 8 Explorer from eBay, it looked to me like the Mi 8 Explorer does - with the transparent back. I have been looking at ways to root this thing and have not found many guides for the ursa model, I guess as it is quite rare right now. I just ran DevCheck on my phone to see some of the details in preparation for rooting and it tells me that my model is the 'Mi 8 Pro equuleus'.
I saw that the next thread down in this fgorum is someone asking if they can flash one rom to another device. I am wondering, if this had been done to my device would it now show me the name to be equuleus? Could this be what is on my device but it is actually Explorer hardware. Or is it that there is also a transparent version of the Mi 8 Pro.
I went with a Xiaomi phone to try something new but there is way too much confusion for my liking with the similar/region specific devices.

Ursa and Equuleus (and even Dipper) share almost the same hardware with just a few differences.
I never tried to cross flash my Equuleus, but my guess is the Rom is not capable of telling you what the underlying hardware is.
And yes, Ursa and Equuleus probably look exact the same, so you may (or may not, IDK) have got an Equuleus instead of an Ursa.
Try to find out if your device has been bootloader unlocked. If it was not (means it is in locked state), then it has a stock Rom and was never flashed into something else.

I purchased Xiaomi Mi 8 EE which is Chinese version of Xiaomi Mi 8 pro, its simply perfect high performance phone, google installed via gapps apk

I purchased this from Argos, (in UK ) and it is the Equules variant.
Hope that helps

I also purchased mine in the U.K and it looks like it is actually the Explorer edition, the mi 8 transparent edition only comes with a Li-polymer battery, the transparent edition only uses the li-ion battery, they are both 3000ma. The explorer edition comes in 8gb ram and the transparent mi 8 pro is also 8gb ram. I think it's actually the same phone just the explorer is for the Chinese market.

I'm pretty sure though it's actually the explorer edition, if you search gearbest it comes under mi 8 pro explorer edition, uses a Li-poly battery which the mi8 pro transparent titanium doesn't, if you download the phone information app from the play store you will see, I also purchased mine from Argos in the U.K. The transparent titanium mi 8 pro uses a li-ion battery which our does not, they have maybe supplied these as the pro to meet network band specs in Europe.

Hello, I got rid of my MI 8 and got a mi mix 3

I've just place an order on aliexpress and would like to know more on the real world usage before my phone is delivered.
Anyone kind souls out there with pro 5?

I have got mine for about a week now. No complaints so far though. My only gripe is that the screen looks very washed out. Or that could be because i am coming from a over saturated samsung screen. Let me know if you need more specific details.:good:
I have a great desire to order meizu pro 5. But I see that there is no Ukrainian language in it and, as for me, Meizu community is very small in whole. So I do not know whether I could expect for good roms and Ukrainian language... That's why probably I will order Xiaomi instead of pro 5...

How's the camera and battery life doing?
Sent from my R7plusf using XDA Free mobile app
I have not done any rigorous battery test on the phone yet. But so far have not seen any battery drains. I am unable to post image links for the screenshot due to xda 10 posts rule. Iam at 86 % after 11h 37 min. 24 % of which is Phone Standby, 19% screen, 13% Android System, 7 % Android OS and the rest other apps. My day included mostly of standy, an hour or two of podcasts, a few email checks and messaging. As for the camera, i had some shots from the night time and they were really bad. Lots of noise. I will try to post some samples in the coming posts for the images and also test the phone on battery intensive games. I have one weird bug though. Once a day the phone gets locked and prompts for the flyme account password
mx5 pro
hi,
i have mine also a week , the battery life is just incredible, really.
my huge complain is this ****ty, terrible, scrap Flyme OS. I can not get used to it. i miss a lot of customization possibilities. no root option, no themes, locked bootloader. it is not laggy, no force close, everything works fine, but i can not get used to it.
the hardware for me is VERY VERY impressive! i would truly recommend this phone BUT 1st take a look at this OS if you like it or not.
hope i could help a bit.
I have my pro 5 rooted and it is extremely easy to do. Just go to settings, create a flyme account then go to system privileges and choose root. Viola!! And you are rooted.
I have Samu Note 4 but now I would like a new phone with 2 sim card slot. I like the One+2 and Meizu MR5 pro. Can you convenience me that the Mx5 pro is better chiose? And what about international support (update) and overheating and other negative property. Now I can buy One about 400€. It is chinese original new model. What do you think? Later, for example 6 month if I would like to sell it how keep it price.

If you are a heavy user just search "Snapdragon 810 vs Mediatek Helio X10 Antutu showdown (part 2)" in youtube from gizchina channel. That should be reason enough to not go for 810 phone.

i even can not find out how to switch between apps without closing them. so frustrating... 1st OS ever i would need a handbook.

Planing to buy Mate 10 64gb, few questions before I do it

Hello Guys,
I’m considering buying Huawei 10 (NOT Pro), but since it’s not officially available in the countries I spend most my time in (Poland and UK), I’ll have to get it from Chinese shop. Having said that, I have my concerns and I’d be glad if you could walk me through them. My apologies if some on those questions were already answered, but some of the feedback I’ve gather from this forum come from the “early days” of this phone and I don’t know if they are still valid. Let’s get to it:
1) Is the system in Polish language? It might be under “(…) and many more languages” but I’d like to know
2) I should be looking for version L29, correct? Are those “international” versions on sites like https://www.giztop.com/huawei-mate-10.html really international, or just Chinese ones with switched software?
3) My current phone is Oneplus 3 – and I admire the simplicity of almost-stock Android. How much off a detour is MIUI in comparison? Will I have to deal with a lot of bloating in the system?
4) Since there won’t be a version for “big” markets like US and UK – could there be any issues with updates? Will Huawei abandon the support for international version anytime soon – speculatively speaking? Or is it possible for them to introduce this phone to US/UK/PL, but later?
5) I’d be taking 4gb 64gb version, but I’ve been using 6gb phone for a while now – will this “downgrade” be visible in daily use?
6) I’ve seen some complaints about the camera. I understand it’s not “perfect”, but right now I’m using oneplus3+g.cam port from Pixel 2 – so I should still experience a bump in quality, right?
7) I want to buy it from this site https://www.giztop.com/huawei-mate-10.html. Is there any reason I should pick a different one/wait?
Thank you for all your future answers, and apologies for a longer post.
Cheers!
I'm in a similar situation. I'm planning to buy from eBay the international version. The sellers there are based in either France or Ireland, they say they give you a year warranty but crucially you have PayPal protection.
I've seen other sites where a minority of phones never turn up or are broken and it's incredibly hard to get the money back.

1 - I don't know for sure but it should be there !
2 - Yes L29 is the version you should look for ! You can get one from here https://www.ebay.fr/itm/NEUF-HUAWEI...234857?hash=item4b2e0e4729:g:41oAAOSwytJaE9rW that's where I got one for my uncle
3 - EMUI is very customised version of Android but with big possibilities for themes so you should be able to make it look as you want
4 - We can't be sure of anything in that domain ^^ I just left Samsung because of giving update slowly... But for sure as the flagship of the brand it should get update faster than others
5 - It'll not. Some may not agree with me but 4gb of Ram is largely enough today !
6 - As I'm not a professionnal I could not tell ^^ but for sure Mate 10 camera is amazing and will only improve with software update improving AI
7 - As I answered on 2, you can get it from dwi on ebay, I've took 2 phones from them (S7 dual sim and Huawei Mate 10)
I live in the UK and I bought the L29 version, it works fine and you can select the system language when you setup the phone. The only issue I found is HiCloud wouldn't work but I rebranded to the L09 version and everything works
To answer your point 6
I'm also using a ported version of the camera app on my previous phone which is a Xiaomi Mix and the phone is notorious for its very poor camera lens.
It surprises me totally what software can achieve where the hardware fails at.
Even on the ****ty camera, the software managed to capture IMO equal or more details as compared to M10 on the pro mode.
So at the end of the day. Your OP3 having a better lens than the Xiaomi Mix should experience probably equal or maybe seeing a 5 to 10% bump in details.
If there's ever a chance that M10 could have the ported camera from Pixel on our phone I'll definitely be a very happy man.
Hi jay. I too live in the UK and planning the buy the L29. Was the re branding just to get the hicloud? Or were there other features?
Thanks

Thanks for the link. I'm not referring to the stock Google camera but the exact one on the pixel phone.
https://www.google.com.sg/amp/s/www...gle-camera-hdr-customization-raw-support/amp/
It is the HDR+ that makes all the difference but sadly Google only enables it for the Pixel phone.
Hey sorry to jack this thread but whats the drawbacks of the Chinese version, bloat ware?? And wouldn't it get updates faster?
Also, wouldn't it be a better idea to buy the AL00.. 128 GB, 6 GB RAM Chinese Mate 10 version if you wanted to keep that 6GB of ram?
I just killed my HTC 10 with water so I'm thinking upgrading to the 6GB ram version would be a better move coming from 4GB. I just wish it wasn't so expensive lol 4GB international version is about $800 CND on ebay..

also can you change the soft key buttons placements? move them into opposite spots etc lol?

Why "nano gapps"? Can't the Poco F1 be repartitioned?

Howdy! I'm torn between buying a Poco F1, Mi 9 Lite or Mi 8 Pro, and was checking here to see which of the phones has more support from the community. It seems like the Poco F1 is the winner, BUT... I'm worried in that in two or three ROM threads I checked, it's suggested "you flash the nano Google Apps". Why is that? I mean, in past phones of mine, like the HTC Desire or the OnePlus One, and if I remember correctly, you could repartition your storage to get more space for the system partition. This way you could flash normal-sized Google Apps. Is the Poco F1 - and other phones by Xiaomi - stuck at a specific size, with only the nano version flashable?
And if yes, doesn't that mean that in, say, six months or one year, when those apps will have grown even larger, not even the nano version will fit and you'll have to go even smaller?
I don't want to buy a phone for which new ROMs will feel too restricted, or you'll have to jump through major hoops to flash, one year down the road.

There's no system space restriction whatsoever, neither do you need to repartition the storage.
Nano gapps are suggested mostly because there are some ROMs that encounter bugs with richer gapps
and because opengapps support only up to nano-gapps for Android 10 for now
Ah,I see! Thanks for the clarification! If it's not too much, or against the rules, which one of those phones would you believe would be better in the long run? I've already bought a Mi 9 Lite for my wife, and I love its display, but the Poco (and, up to a point, the Mi 8 Pro) have better CPU/GPU and support here. I own the poco for about a year and i have bought mi 9T for my wife (same as the lite, but with submersible camera).
Screen difference is great.
The notch is a large disadvantage for the poco and many good ROMs break the deal for me, with how they use the space it leaves.
Sound is a bit better on mi9t
I don't think photos (with gcam) have much difference between the two, except telephoto.
I am very satisfied with the poco but i have to let you know that:
1. If you're not gaming i'd suggest mi9 lite/t
2. I get 7-8 hours SOT without performance restrictions, so if you choose the mi8, i guess that you'll get ~5-6h SOT with the smaller battery and the led (if that helps)
Thanks for the quick and extensive reply!
Although I fancy myself a gamer, I find that, at over 40, I end up mostly using my phone in other ways - notes, calendar, task management, GPS...
I really-really like my emulators, that's why the Poco F1 and Mi 8 Pro look better, on paper, compared to the Mi 9 Lite. But if I'm to be a realist, the Mi 9 Lite's screen will end up being better in the long run for ogling text, that will end up being 90% of what I use the phone for. And I'll be damned if its lower specs aren't enough to run some SNES or Genesis - era games
I only hope there's a hack or something for doubling the size of displayed text. My eyesight's started failing, and the text on its ultra-HD screen, on my wife's phone, is also ultra-small for me. I've read that you can't overdo the DPI settings in the dev options 'cause the whole UI might break.

Android 10 has text size reduce/enlarge inbuilt.
Idk if it's there in miui though.
My wife's Mi 9 Lite has an option in MIUI, but I found all the three settings it offered small. That's why I enabled the dev options and directly changed the DPI value. But, AFAIK, I can't overdo that - and don't know what the limits are.
By the way, Mi 9 Lite incoming. Thanks for helping me choose.

Buying Oneplus 7T Pro in 2020

Hello All,
I am planning to buy oneplus 7t pro in upcoming sale. Is it worth going for? How is the custom from development support for this device ?
I know its already a year old device but if development support is good then I can expect at least till Android 13 for this device.
How is the device itself first ?

Custom rom support are not that great for 7tp.....but you will get android 13 for sure.. great phone ..better than op 8... only problem is less better camera than 8 series...and custom rom support is dying day by day... it's very unfortunate that Google is trying to take control over android security.. that's why 7t and 7t pro has no twrp with the ability to decrypt data in twrp recovery.so now it's you who has to take decision...

I bought the same model just a week ago because it was a great value today UNDER 600 dollars and it ticked all the boxes for what I basically wanted. I have a P30 Pro as well, and while I'd say it gets better battery life overall and that the camera can take better shots in SOME conditions, the gap isn't really that great. Most of the shots I've A/B with random people have chosen the OP7T Pro shots over the P30 Pro. It does get better brightness at night, but the details are lacking and seem over-processed. The P30 Pro definitely has a faster shutter.
After much deliberation I just received mines yesterday. I had a Mi 9 SE which was ghost touching on me so I had to change over asap. Figured I'd give OnePlus another go, I'd owned the one, the two, and now the 7t pro.
Really happy with the decision so far, just need to get used the massive size. Runs kinda hot tho, but that just maybe because I've been using it quite intensely for the last day or 2.
I'm happy with the decision.
I am also thinking of buying the 7T PRO or the Redmi K300 Pro ZOOM edition.
I am currently using a S8 PLUS and I would like a better camera.
I was supposed to get the S20 FE 5G but in my country Samsung only released the Exynos variant.

You'll probably get more software updates with the OnePlus. That's what tipped it for me.

A better camera is more important to me than future software updates.
Would you still recommend the 7T Pro over the K30 PRO zoom edition?

Haven't seen that model or used it, so I couldn't comment, but I can compare it to the P30 Pro I own. I'd say that the P30 camera is better in 70 percent of photo scenarios, but it does lack detail often. The P30 tends to over-sharpen images and smooth faces too much, even without portrait features on, whereas the OP7TPro does tend to have more noise in low-light, but produces a more accurate rendering of color and better fine detail, ironically.

Which device would you consider to have the best custom development/ROM support?
Thanks

Oneplus One! ?
I moved back to 7T Pro from OP8. It was a great decision in my opinion. I hated the punch hole. the 7T Pro checks all the boxes for me.

HTC HD2 had em all lol
I'm also looking to buy a 7T Pro but I would like McLaren international edition for use in the US. Any one have any suggestion on where to get one in the US? If I was to buy a CN edition off Alibaba could I easily flash it to the international rom?
Planning to buy it also because it has nice hardware (no hole on the screen), and supports LineageOS.

If you want a device just like the 7T pro but with far more rom support as well as extended custom development, then Id go for the 7 Pro. Both are pretty much the same device, except youd be more satisifed with 7 Pro as it has a much larger community surrounding it and there's alot of things you can mod on the device without having to deal with the new android 10 dynamic partitioning that made TWRP not fully functional on the 7T pro
Wifi + bluetooth unstable connection
I bought the phone too.
So far everything is fine - except wifi stability issues (seems to be affected by bluetooth being on).
I don't understand how this still can be a thing. I read posts about this model having this problem a year ago.
How is this possible?
I did update the phone to the 10.0.12.HD01BA and tried all the suggested solutions (reseting network settings, switching airplane mode on and off.... one thing I haven't tried is factory reset) yet the problem still persist, it's occassional, but.... I'm still kind of disappointed.
For my part I had the 7pro and now I have the 7T pro and the 2 are very good ... I must say that I still have some frustration from the 7t pro, less good battery and twrp which is not 100% functional which gave me some headaches for the rest it is like the 7pro the best device i have had, for those who wonder why i got the 7 pro and the 7t pro? Between the 2 I decided to try the samsung note 10 plus ... but what a bad choice lolll and I had already sold my 7 pro so I wanted to try the 7T pro.
I have just bought OP7TPro today. It runs like a champ. Only not so good thing is camera. But GCam blew me way. Definitely a great buy if the price is right.

Question Thoughts on Realme UI 3.0?

What are your thoughts on the device os? Do you think it is good overall and offers good performance and stability? Or would it be better to use a custom rom with it?
I am happy with the global rom, except for a few areas.
1. USB C to 3.5mm adapter is quiet, fixed with a command (need root)
2. Camera's autofocus is bad in some scenarios
The CN rom is filled with the worst kind of bloatware. Every app wants to track your usage, including the realme UI apps. If I remember it correctly, even calculator or some other most basic app requested permissions
Despite global Rom being cleaner, there were still a few bloatware apps that I had to remove like HeyTap Cloud or Quick Device Connect among others.
So to answer your question, stock Rom is good enough but needs a bit of tweaking.
I hope the eu rom is the same as the global rom, but to summarize, the stock rom is good if you can tweak it with root. Am I right?

Love it.
Iam ex-MIUI user, since 2017 (Redmi 4x, Redmi 5, Mi Mix 2, Mix 2s, Mi 8, Mi 9, Mi 10,...) , started with MIUI 7 or 8 global (i guess), later custom MIUIos roms (EU project, without bloatware, better optimization, different ram management, etc), and this is my first phone without MIUI. I was very worried, but for nothing.
I have EU non-root version, bloatware and google apps - done in 5 minutes without complications, OS is fast, pure, without bugs and any similar problems (team MIUI knows...), after month iam very satisfied.
Consider your use case and the budget. I just browse web and instant message 80% of the time.
Realme seems to be good with OTA updates although Global/EU versions get much slower rollout.
Hardware specs are great.
OS is good, and Global/EU ROM is the closest to stock Google experience.
The conclusion is that the hardware is not the limitation, so all the power is in the user hands.
If you want something that works just right out of the box and has greater community support with comparable specs, you'd probably have to look at Galaxy S22 at twice the price or others.
Other good contender is Realme GT Neo 3. Minor trade-offs here and there.
Or if you only care about camera, Realme 9 Pro+ could be a good option too.
All above have IMX766 camera sensor, same as GT 2 Pro.
If you are looking at GT 2 Pro, consider getting CN version and flashing Global.

Why should I get the cn version? If I recall I saw people getting issues when flashing it with global so I think that any version should be fine since with eu it's rootable through an exploit
CN came out much cheaper for me.
Flashing global works fine if the steps are followed carefully.

But if I got EU instead, it should be ok to leave it as is and use an exploit to root it no?

The exploit is only needed to unlock the bootloader. Once the bootloader is unlocked there's no difference between the various global models with regard to root.
