"Lacking storage booting" function in recovery menu - Samsung Galaxy S9+ Questions & Answers

Hello
On Galaxy S9+ in recovery menu I can find function called "Lacking storage booting". Someone know what this function do ?

Mine too igot confuse what is this for?Lacking Storage Booting

ive been trying to get info for a whilenow including asking sammy multiple times..
what I gather is, if your storage is full to the point you are having device issues or boot looping you enable that option which does something to where you can boot up and save some of your files.. it isnt a permanent fix as it suggests you should do a reset after u get ur files off

Hi,
I have used "Lacking Storage Booting" option for more than 5 times but I didn't found any lag/misbehave after using it (without factory resetting) & performance was the same all the time. This happened with me but if with you it lags then perform a factory reset.
1) However, this is supposed to be used when your mobile is having any booting problem or heavy storage issues.
2) This option is used when you need to get your storage access as Samsung says to backup your documents you want when mobile boots and perform a factory reset.
Even your Galaxy have no booting problem you can use "storage lack booting" without any problem (proved on my S9+).
Samsung claims that resetting should be placed just because for future steps to prevent any possiblity of issues which do not occurs but they have to think forward for the POSSIBILITIES.
One thing more, later on instead resetting the device you can also do instead of resetting and after using "storage lack booting":
* Delete documents from your phone (S9+)
* Go to recovery mode
* Mount/system
* clear cache
I hope this helped.

Hi, I know this is a late reply on this thread but I just wanna ask. Will "Lacking Storage Booting" delete all of the data on my phone then?

Reply to the question of DATA LOSS (No Data would be lost!)

No Bro, you won't loss anything on your device and even your phone's lock screen won't be affected (By this I mean that your phone would as Like it was).
However, Samsung says "Your Phone might get slow if you use Storage Lack Booting" but only if your storage is full or nearly full. You won't loss any data and this function base is to protect data and not to delete them.
Examples:
1) Your Phone has storage (127/128 GB), and you use "Storage lack booting" so for me the phone was not laggy but if you found your phone laggy restart it thrice and go to RECOVERY MODE and select clear cache.
2) Personally, for me this feature is not beneficial as this feature is for if you can boot into your phone so use it but WAIT I had my S7 with its peak storage full 32/32GB but everyday I restart, power off, dead it but still it is working.
3) Personally, for no reason I have used "Storage lack booting" more than 15 times and I performed speed test from all perspectives and felt the same speed response (all speeding was tested approx and the net-total was all approx and and yeah whenever if your phone is not turning on use this feature and when you will use then it might be laggy but till when its not errupting booting up it won't lag by using it.
* First time , When I used STORAGE LACK BOOTING I was little scared but then I thought did I purchased this phone for being scared.
* At First day, when I purchased this phone, I was scared to test water resistance, but Then I thought did I purchased a NEW phone for being scared. So i just threw it in a pool of 5 meter depth and yeah when I threw it, i belived it won't disturb me and is water resistance.
So bro, everyday learn something, experience it and surley if you are using Samsung orignal version it won't distrub your phone.

THIS IS AWESOME!
actually here is my situation, I'm just really scared to lose my pictures lol so please bear with me.
My phone is actually locked with PIN Code 4 digits, cant remember the code. its been like this 5 days now.
so my question is this: Can I do~
1. Boot to recovery mode.
2. Do the Lacking Storage Booting, so that it will save my data on my SD Card.
3. Perform Factory Reset so that my phone will be unlocked from the PIN Code that I dont remember anymore.
4. Restore the files from the SD card.
Please correct me if these steps are wrong.

Totally Odd Situation For ME!

For me it's an odd situation because I never went through a locked phone because I have my Samsung account signed in my Galaxy and so when I forget the code I simply go to Samsung Find My Mobile Website and unlock my phone from there. So What I know about this situation is:
1) If you signed your SAMSUNG ACCOUNT in your phone so UNLOCK your phone from the SAMSUNG website.
2) Your Data would definitely be lost and so you have to RESET YOUR PHONE through recovery mode:
After resetting you won't be able to get into the PHONE if Google Protection Lock was turned on (By Default it's ON) and to bypass it you can login your GOOGLE ACCOUNT which was logged in your phone. If you did not logged on your GOOGLE EMAIL then reset it but you would loss all of it's data. In this case if you forgot your GOOGLE ACCOUNT so you can easily bypass it FROM MARKET without logging the account.
3) Go to market and ask the person whether it is possible to get your photos/data if possible so it's best. IF not so, sorry for your lost
- Boot Lacking Won't let you enter into your phone without entering the password ( For you case just ignore it's existence for to HELP you)

I feel sad for being late and I wasn't able to help you at time but thanks to elliwigy for covering this thing at time. My e-mails are so messed up gonna fix this mess up soon. Sorry in literal meaning.
Thou Fattima, I'm here to add that Samsung revoked this feature from all it's devices which had this. It's quiet not possible to be there. Is that feature still on your phone then your phone is not up to date. Not in my S9+ neither on my s20ultra.

Greetings. Can I perform the wipe data/factory reset without the lacking storage mode?

Yes, definitely it's possible. Boot Lacking is used when we are stuck in boot loop (phone restarting continuously and doesn't let you boot in) but when we reset phone from recovery option that is a step which comes before looping so obviously we can reset directly.

How do you perform lacking storage booting? Is it a button combination that you do when the phone is booting? Is it an option in the menu that I'm too stupid to understand? Sorry for the late reply.

i know a device can help you to backup everything in your phone if you are interested. it will help you to storage it in a difference micro SD card or External portable hard drive if you have them.

[Q] Can sgs2 work with unwritable flash?

Hello,
I have strange defect in my phone: after every power cycle phone wakes up in state it was at about February 13 2012. I can not permanently change anything. I also can not change firmware. I even have made full three stage recovery from broken nand write, as described elsewhere here, without changing anything.
What is strange: no warnings or failure notices. Phone is working normally. Flashing is also seemingly working okay. But after restart nothing is changed. Only when I work with big files, random apps start to crash. I discovered this when downloading maps.
My question is: can sgs2 with Android 2.3.3 seemingly work O.K. with totally nonfunctional nonvolatile memory writing?
Because I don't know your history....
Did you full wiped that is
Format cache data system sdcard
Dalvik.

I did. Nothing gets erased. If you know, how Android system works: in your opinion is it possible that system under light usage works O.K. in spite that nonvolatile storage is effectively read only?
Strange issue, but yes in theory, if your storage is busted in a way that it actually works as a read only, but when an application need to write something it fails and crashes.

When an application needs to write something it does not fail, at least when it does not write large amounts of data. I can do everyday tasks: add or remove contacts, add few apps (which then actually work), move icons on screens and so on. Is all this possible with NVmemory working as ROM? Because after power cycle all that is gone and all reverts to February 13 2012 state.
Just a thought but have you tried erasing all the contents of your phone?
Using ODIN you can install an odin Cyanogenmod rom, use the pitfile and select repartition. This I believe wipes everything except the 14gb user data portion. Then, just format that under settings.
Perhaps a full wipe would fix it.

That's what I think too, but didn't told him because using pit got a high chance of bricking.
And the way he is using suggests he is out of warranty.

The phone does not effectively wipe at all. After any wiping or installing new roms/bootloaders/pits/anything the phone wakes up in state it was 2012/02/13, except date and time, which is current.
If you have used pit and tick repartition, and still nothing erased, boy your internal storage is shouting get rid of me fast or I'll go dead on you soon.
Or I could be wrong and your phone will out lived you
I am pretty much convinced that my phone is irreparable. I do not look for solution to make it work normally again (although I would very much welcome one if I'm wrong).
I seek an answer from somebody who intimately knows, how Android filesystem works: Is it possible, that phone works seemingly O.K. under very light usage in spite that it cannot in fact write to flash memory? And work like this for 2 months without giving warning/error messages?
I compare my situation to a PC with ram-disk setup and an unwritable hard disk. This would not work long. Can Android?
Hey Zie, you may not get this notification of reply, but I wanted to ask, did you ever reach a solution with you SGS II? I'm on the Skyrocket and the same thing happened to me a few days ago. So far nothing has worked and I just upgraded. This was my second Skyrocket coming from an Infuse 4g.
Can't return the phone because all can tell its a rooted device with a custom rom on it. AOKP Milestone 6. Let me know what u did to get around this if u can....

[Q] Soft Brick. Stuck on Samsung screen. How to access Internal Memory? - [SOLVED]

Background
I undated to Jellybean last week. All was going well until last night. My phone just turned into a Soft brick.
It is now stuck on Samsung logo.
I am able to boot into recovery mode and also download mode.
I tried remote logging to the device using ADB but I could only see a place holder to the SDCARD and SDCARD1, I could not see any files in there, and I could not mount them either.
Question
Anyway my question is, is there anyway to access the internal memory so I can recover some pics and videos, before I do a factory reset which will wipe all data including the internal memory partition?
By the way, I tried wiping Cache partition, didn't fix the problem.
I don't want to do a factory reset as I have read it will also wipe internal memory partition.
I then tried using Odin to install the original Jellybean firmware from my network which I got from samung-updates. I thought that this might fix what ever issue was preventing the phone from booting up, and hoped it would keep the internal memory partition intact. This uploaded successfully to the phone in download mode, but the phone was still stuck in the Samsung Screen after reboot.
Please help!!!
Thanks,
Anthony.
Re: [Q] Soft Brick. Stuck on Samsung screen. How to access Internal Memory?
First of all, here's clear idea of everything:
1. Wiping data, factory reset or flashing via Odin will format ur internal memory (where ur apps, settings, contacts, call history, calendar, etc are stored).
2. Ur photos, videos and other user files are saved in internal USB storage, and hence will not be deleted.
So u can be sure ur precious files won't be lost.

Thanks Immortalneo. But I read that since the ICS update android stores and accesses the MC in a different way so I just wasn't sure about it. Also I read so many contradicting comments on various forms about this so didn't want to take the risk as I had just recently taken some photos and videos at my Dad's 80th Birthday that I didn't have time to back up, which I didn't want to take the risk and loose them.
Anyway I managed to get access to the Internal Memory before doing the Factory reset.
So for anyone else who stumbles across this thread and needs help this is what I did. I am not sure if everything I did was necessary but I will list everything I did so you can try some or all of it yourself.
Before I start I should mention that my phone was Stock, never been flashed. It was using the latest official Samsung phone network provider Jellybean update.
Using Odin I flashed with latest Jellybean original ROM for my country phone network from samsung-updates. You need to boot your phone into Download mode by holding Volume down, Menu, Power button. By the way Recovery mode is accessed by holding Volume Up, Menu, Power button.
You can probably use any custom rom but I specifically wanted to put on the same ROM to see if it might overwrite some broken files and fix the stuck boot loop issue. It didn't fix it, so maybe this step could be skipped in fact.
Next I decided to ROOT the phone as I read there were extra options in the Recovery boot screen. So again I used Odin to install SiyahKernel. This was the start of my eventual recovery. After I did this and booted up into Recovery mode I had some new options available, specifically lots of Memory card options. I mentioned in my OP that I could access the phone memory using ADB shell but I could not see anything in the SDCARD as it seemed like a link or placeholder. Anyway using Siyah's Kernel I now had an option to Mount the USB storage. As soon as I selected that option my Laptop popped up a message that a new device was connected and would I like to open the folder and view its files. ALLELUIA !!! I could now see the Internal Memory mapped as a drive and I could access all of my files and backup all of my precious videos and photos. However my phone would still not boot up! Arghhhhh
So now that I had my files backed up it was safe to do a Full Data Wipe and Factory Reset. I did that that, and during the process I got an error:
Code:
Wiping data
Wiping cache
[B]Error mounting /sdcard/.android_secure![/B]
Skipping format
Format complete
Anyway I tried booting up and it was still stuck on the Samsung Screen. F&%K I thought.
I was almost beginning to loose hope. But then I decided to just manually format memory card first before doing the Factory Reset. So I booted back up into recovery mode and selected Format Memory. Then did a Factory Reset and rebooted. But it was stuck again on the Samsung screen so I just left it down on the desk and started looking again at the forums then I saw the screen change to updating or initializing applications in the corner of my eye. Holy Sh1tballs, its working! It did seem to be stuck on the Samsung screen for ages, but in reality it was probably less than 30 secs,
As soon as I set up my Google account all my apps and settings and contacts started to automatically download back onto the phone. The only thing I lost were my SMS messages, but no big deal there.
So there you have it. I am back up and running with stock Samsung Jellybean phone network version as before, but now with a rooted phone with all the extra delights that enables me to do
In case any of this does not work for you there is another option you could try. It could be your internal MC is actually corrupted. This post below relates to re-partitioning the MC so its not for the faint hearted but it may be worth a try if all else fails.

Hey,
I'm having the same issue and want to pull files before wiping but not clear on bit of your instructions - did you root before installing Siyah kernal?
When I googled instructions for installing the kernal it says it I'll need to be rooted and have clockworkmod installed as well: http://androidforums.com/galaxy-s2-...s-root/518798-siyah-kernel-dummies-guide.html

ANY WAY TO RECOVER DATA FROM A BROKEN Xperia ACTIVE?

Hi!
A few days ago something happened to my dad's xperia active.
He said that the battery got empty and when he got home, he wanted me to check what's wrong with it since he said it didn't turn on. When I pushed the power button, the screen was all black, BUT the blacklight for the soft buttons started up. So I thought it must be either a dead screen or a dead battery but I wasn't sure, so I pulled the buttery and tried booting it up and it didn't, even the sony logo didn't appear and this time no backlight for the soft buttons either. Anyway, fastboot maybe works, not sure, semc flash mode works, but no adb...
Is there any way to recover data (SMS, contacts, and some pdf-s) from the phones internal memory? Actually, I'm sure there is, but how to recover the data?
Is it possible too boot a custom recovery with fastboot boot recovery.img on an "untouched" phone without root and without unlocked bootloader and do a full backup from there????
Any help is appreciated!
fastboot unlocking will erase your data to prevent data theft .so you cant use fastboot flash recovery.igmg
There are other ways which I can't clarify but they require submitting the device to an professional analyst and will probably cost more money that the device itself ..
You can just pull out the memory card which should have PDF's since /data,/system and /cache cant be user accessed

Haha, that's what I thought but my dad tried to convince me that they must be in the internal memory, like there was no other way which I found highly unlikely aswell.
Anyway, I think I will try to flash the phone to working state and nevermind the data loss.

[Q] Samsung S3 Permanent freeze on home screen

My appologies for this post. Probably this problem is being dealt before on this forum but cant seem to find a solution to mine.
hi, i have a samsung s3 32gb (original stock unrooted).
Problem my space was running low on my s3. And while shooting a video, the space ran out and the phone froze. then i tried to end the video but obviously the screen was frozen.
After that i tried to reboot the phone but it came to the home screen, and couldnt press anything. (i only can drag the top bar down and that's it, it doesnt come back up).
i tried soft reset, didnt work. i tried to boot in safe mode, it doesnt work (it get stuck at the samsung logo). download and recovery mode works fine.
when i connect it to the pc, in device manager i get under Portable Devices (MTP USB device with a yellow triangle and ! mark). obviously KIES doesnt recognise anything connected.
After reading lot of posts, i installed 'android-sdk' and ran 'adb.exe' in cmd.
adb devices shows my device ; i can see all the directories on my phone.
when i try to copy, move or delete any files from the phone to my pc to empty the phone storage, i get this message "device not found".
i dont wanna lose my pics and videos +data (no backup). ANY HELP GUYS???

Try clearing cache and dalvik. If it doesn't work, u might have to factory reset which deletes ur data. Since android-sdk doesn't work anymore and kies too. There is no way to back up ur data. Ur only hope is tat clearing cache and dalvik works.

pictures and videos are stored on the internal sdcard, so they are save even if you decide to wipe your data.
you will only lose your app data and settings
but try first the suggestion from the post above

pictures and videos are stored on the internal sdcard, so they are save even if you decide to wipe your data.
you will only lose your app data and settings

if you are referring to the factory reset inside the "settings" menu in the phone, i think it would be true (the pics & videos wont be affected)
but if you are referring to the reset in the recovery mode. i think that will format everything including my personal data (pics & videos) and return the phone to a factory state (which is how it was new). isnt the OS and data are on the internal sdcard as well ?
Their comments refer to a custom recovery, e.g Philz, where you can clear dalvik and also mount your storage for usb access.
I think you have bigger problems, the phone should not have frozen as you describe and you many have partition corruption.
There are step by step guides on how to install custom recovery in general forum, stickies. It will invalidate your warranty, which might not be a good idea if you need a new motherboard.

[Q] Any way to interrupt factory reset or recover data?

Doh!
I started a factory reset on my phone, then realised I still had unsaved precious holiday photos on the device.
I removed the battery almost instantly after pressing the reset button, thus stopping the process. The mobile is connected to a PC by USB, but of course without the battery in place there is no way of viewing and transferring files on the phone. When the battery is replaced, the factory reset process continues where it left off - on the "deleting files" screen.
So-
1. Is there any way to stop or interrupt the factory reset process?
2. Is there any way to retrieve the photos/files whilst the reset is frozen with the battery removed?
3. If the files cannot be recovered by normal operation of the phone, can they be recovered by a specialist company from the deactivated phone?
Phone is a Samsung Galaxy S3 Duos (dual-SIM) GT-i9300i
Android will be stock current version.
Thanks for any help!
Bump.
Additional question:
Whats a recommended recovery utility to try and recover files after a factory reset?
Thx
Hello buddy, so when do a factory reset in any device is impossible to stop it. You 'll lose all your files. Is very important to do back ups in many memories card or in an app (Google drive).
I auto-back up all files except photos (to stop very large files being auto-copied to other devices by Google/Dropbox, etc) and normally just transfer each batch of photos to a server archive.
On this occasion I was just looking at the factory reset options, and off it went (screen is somewhat over-sensitive on this phone) - not even a warning dialogue, as on other devices and versions.
If it can't be stopped, then my only hope is to run a retrieval programme as soon as the phone has finished rebooting. Hence my question about what is the best/most successful data retrieval application that people recommend?

I am afraid that data retrieval is impossible since you haven't made some sort of backup and have deleted everything by factory resetting. Sorry buddy.

Dont get so worried. Wiping data partition doesnt delete /data/media. Which means your photos , videos , downloads is still there. Which recovery do you use ?
