LineageOS install (Nexus 7 - 2012 version) - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i have a Nexus 7 (2012 version) that my daughter-in-law gave me (several years ago) because it would not boot. i previously reinstalled the OS and she was good for a while until the issue resurfaced. i get the spinning circles when booting and it just sits there. since this reoccurred (the second time actually occurred about 2 years ago which was a month or two after the initial encounter, been sitting there since then) i decided to see if i could fix it again.
have tried using Recovery Mode to no avail. only thing that helped after the first time was a complete OS reload. pretty sure i used Nexus Root Toolkit to do this.
rather than reload the stock Android i was thinking of loading the LineageOS. i believe that the LineageOS for the Nexus 7 (2012) is an unofficial release.
however, i have a question concerning what version to download. i was under the impression that even though it would be unofficial that there would be a single version of it, being maintained by numerous developers. but when i looked on the www.lineageosdownloads.com/download-nexus-7-2012-lineage-os/ site it links me to the Android File Host web site. and here it has the developer being 'aaopt'. but if i poke around i see other developers for the Nexus 7 (2012) each seeming to have their own version.
are each of these developers creating their own fork of some base release and if so how do you know which one you want? or was their release done at some point in time and their changes got merged back in the main branch.
i would much rather grab a release that is maintained by a bunch of developers (working together) than someone who forks off their own branch.
if you have a suggestion as to what would be the latest/best release could you provide a link?
thanks!

[Q] How do CM ROMs get updates?

Just one caveat: I have done searches (read: multiple).
How in the world does CyanogenMod get to all of the supported devices? All of a sudden once CM9 is released, for phones/tablets moving from CM7 to 9, does it go out to all devices or what? Does it need to get ported from the source for each and every individual device? In general, how is CM updated and how does it get out to the officially supported phones/tablets?
Cyanogenmod ROMs do indeed have to be ported to each individual device and maintained. Once a device receives official support from the Cyanogenmod team, daily changes made to the AOSP source code (tweaks and bugfixes by the various contributing devs) are automatically compiled by a "buildbot" and released at the end of each day (thus these builds are called "nightlies"). These nightly updates are then made available for download through the Cyanogenmod website and through ROM Manager. Once code updates reach a certain plateau, a "final release"-worthy balance of features and stability, the build is released separately as a "stable" build (such as CM7.1), though you can still download it from the website or from ROM Manager just as with the nightlies. CM9 will eventually receive the same treatment and be released in the form of nightlies and stable builds.
Further (highly recommended) reading can be found here: http://www.cyanogenmod.com/blog/the-current-and-future-state-of-cyanogenmod-nightlies
Has anyone seen John Connor?
so the nightlies don't have to be ported, but every major revision does?

No.
"Porting" is just a word used for the process of making the rom work on any certain device.
So to answer your question, once the work of porting CM to the certain device is done, that port is used as the base for both the stable and nightly builds.
Look at the analogy of when a new phone comes out, case manufacturers create a mold to use to make their cases fit the certain phone, and that mold is used to make all kinds of cases. Same concept

Trying to install Gingerbread on Nexus 7 2012

Good evening all,
I came across a post on here a while ago which asked about the ability to run Gingerbread on a Nexus 7 of 2012 and the response was basically, why? And, co pile it yourself.
So, I thought I'd give it a go, just to see what it does.
Previously I've only ever flashed custom ROMs and I've never downloaded AOSP before, but everyone starts somewhere.
My position at the moment is I've built Gingerbread from AOSP on my server but as I didn't choose Nexus 7 when building it (due to it not having an option to lunch Gingerbread) I opted for the generic build.
So, this built but as it's generic it seems to only be the system, no recovery or boot.img etc.
So, I looked around at guides, building a boot.img for your device in AOSP etc, kernel compilation, but due to my bizarre project, I can't find anything on how to downgrade or retrofit a new boot.img into an older version of Android. Or even how to compile an older boot.img against newer hardware. Even the guides talk about swapping one ROM for another and taking pieces out but they tend to be the same versions of Android.
So, I'm asking for advice really, where do I start?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk
Quick update (not that I've done much on it for a while).
I managed to get the older Gingerbread bootloader installed on my Nexus 7 2012, however I couldn't get further then that, not sure what I'm missing at the moment, potentially the kernel isn't compiled.

[Q] Phone keeps resetting itself

I'm using a OnePlus One, and the latest gapps and 12.1 nightly builds.
However, I noticed that every morning when i wake up, the install screen of cyanogenmod is back. It seems all data and so on is still on the phone, because it says I already provided a Google account and so. This is the third time I'm setting up the device from scratch to 12.1 stable nightly. Any idea why it keeps resetting? Using no custom roms or kernels, just the ones provided in the CM 12.1 Nightly builds (18/04) was the latest official one).
The device is rooted, but it's annoying to spend 2 hours setting it back up every time, re-installing everything. Any help would be appreciated.

Your issue is CM. Use another rom and I bet you will not see the issue again.
CM is the original OS/ROM for the OnePlus One. Or, it was until they released OxygenOS. However, after having tried out OxygenOS, it seems it's simply a beta test for the OnePlus Two. I do not believe they'll push updates for the One, but most likely develop it further with the next model in mind, where it will come pre-installed.
EDIT: CM has confirmed they'll continue development for OPO for two more years.

[ROM][7.1.2][UNOFFICIAL] LineageOS 14.1 weekly builds for Asus Zenpad 8.0 Z380K[N]L

Hello,
As the thread where I originally announced this was locked for reasons apparently unrelated to my build, and the links removed, I'm creating a new thread to keep the community aware of these builds.
I've been building LineageOS 14.1 from the official LineageOS source repository for my personal devices for some time now, and it finally occurred to me that others might find them useful.
These builds are created every Saturday night from a 100% unaltered LineageOS repository, which is synchronized with upstream every day. I must stress that there are NO MODIFICATIONS at all; if it worked/didn't work in the last official Cyanogenmod/LineageOS releases, it works/doesn't work in my builds. At Apple we called these "sustaining builds" -- they keep devices in sync with the latest security patches, but receive no new features.
The build for the Asus Zenpad 8.0 Z380K[N]L (aka P024) is at https://lineageos.disavowed.jp/p024/. This appears to work on both the Z380KL (as reported in the locked thread) and my Z380KNL. There are other devices being built as well ... if you would like me to add a 14.1 or 15.1 device to the weekly build roster, please let me know.
I hope this helps out folks who want to extend the service lifetime of their gear. Share and enjoy.
Edit: per moderator request, I need to provide a link to the source repository used to generate these builds to comply with XDA's interpretation of the GPL. It is the stock LineageOS repository, located at git://github.com/LineageOS/android.git. TheMuppets binary repository was used for the vendor blobs; it is at https://github.com/TheMuppets/
Hi, I have been using your build and updated my device weekly! it' s still good and awesome. (I also use your build for my nexus7)
if you find Oreo, Pie version! please let everyone know. Thank you.
Thank's keep update bro.
Hi, I don't see your weekly build for 22 Nov 2019.
Are there any issues ?
Nice update thanks friends l.
Yeap yesterday i reported, and TS promised to update.
Argh, apparently I wasn't subscribed to my own thread. Fixed.
Sorry about the SIM recognization problem. Somehow my private dev builds were being uploaded instead of the sustaining builds. @DEV87WHY pinged me a few days ago to let me know. The newest build is from the correct tree, and hopefully this won't happen again.
Sorry about that ...

Question about Unofficial rom for Asus ZenPad 8.0 z380knl
How do you update device with rom without losing apps and data? Is it possible to update from unofficial lineage os 14.1 from your repository to latest unofficial lineage os 14.1 build from your repository without having to reinstall apps? My understanding is that you follow the process of normal flash of rom but you don't wipe? Is that it?
Another question:
Does MTP(file transfer) work with this ROM?
Also, did you manage to unlock bootloader(oem unlock). I know it is possible to flash the rom without bootloader unlock. Is that how you do it or you have found a way to unlock bootloader?
Thank you so much.

Hi there,
First off -- thanks for the gift! Much appreciated.
If you're just flashing one of my newer builds on top of one of my older builds, then you shouldn't have to do anything special. Just kick the device into recovery and flash on top of the older build. If you're coming from the ancient Cyanogenmod or the stock ROM, then AFAIK you'll have to wipe.
MTP *should* work but I've never tried it. I don't have my device with me right now so I can't do a quick verification.
For unlocking the bootloader, I'm trying to remember (this was several years ago). IIRC I put it into fastboot and did a tethered recovery boot (i.e., "fastboot boot /path/to/recovery_image_on_pc.img"). Then I did a full wipe and a flash ... and bricked the device because I had a Z380KNL and the Cyanogenmod image at the time supported only the Z380KL.
I then put the stock ROM back on, and when the KNL bits hit the Cyanogen repository, I flashed it with success. At no point did I ever successfully unlock the bootloader as far as I can tell -- I downloaded the ASUS unlock but it never reported success. When booted into fastboot, there's a locked symbol at the lower right of the screen. That doesn't interfere with flashing anything from recovery.
Oh, and important safety tip: to enter recovery from fastboot after you've flashed it via the tethered recovery boot, you'll have to choose "factory reset" on the KNL.
I hope that helps.
As soon as I find out MTP is working I will flash the rom

Gift was my pleasure
The info is most usefull. Thank you for that.
I am currently running my ZenPad 8.0 z380knl on Asus stock rom but ardently looking to upgrade to android 7.1.2 for security reasons as well as other reasons.
I was investigating if everything is working on the new rom. Also upgrade procedure from stock rom to lineage os and from lineage os 14.1 to latest 14.1 lineage os. Thankfully you cleared all that up. Thanks so much !
Only thing that remains for me to find out is if MTP is working on rom, so please check it for me when you have the time.
BTW, I haven't seen your new buld since last week. Will there be no update ?
Is everything working with this ROM?
Can i get confirmation from someone who is actively using it..
MTP and everything else working?

I just tried MTP (using OpenMTP-2.4.1 on MacOS) and it seems to work fine.

There should be an update (or two!) today. The build rooster hung about midway through last week's build for deb, and was actually still running after seven days. I killed off the deb build process and it's progressing to the other devices, although much slower than it should be. I'll troubleshoot this after the regularly scheduled build completes late tonight.
(I'm using Arch Linux on this build machine, and it seems that something in the filesystem layer in kernel > 5.4.10 doesn't like operating under sustained heavy load)
I saw your new build today and have installed it. Thank you
However, The latest security patch has not been applied yet. Hope it will come in next build.
Thank you so much for maintaining the device.
Thank you wileyc !

I have put the latest available rom lineage-14.1-20200202-UNOFFICIAL-P024.zip on my device and works flawlessly!
Million thanks
I have installed the newest one (built on 08 Feb)
the Android security patch was updated to Jan 2020! Thank you very much.
I am worried how long you will keep sharing your build weekly.
Hope next 2 years Thanks again.
I have also installed the latest. Thanks so much!
Thankyou for the update :good:
What about selinux?

What ROM would you like to see for the Axon 7

For quite a while now I've been making LineageOS 15.1 ROMs for the Axon 7.
I think Android 8.1 is still a very capable Android version and there's still support (without using different solutions) for Xposed and some other things. So far I'm still pretty happy with it, but as there are absolutely no fixes and so on in the source anymore and every month one has to hope that it still gets the latest security update, I wanted to ask you guys if you'd still like to see further updates on this ROM (hopefully with more security updates), or if there is any other ROM that is based on Android 9, as Android 10/LineageOS 17.1 isn't ready yet and probably will take a bit more time till it can be a Daily Driver.
The advantage of Android 9/LineageOS 16 is that the source is still being updated (and not only device specific) and that it gets Security Updates much earlier.
So, I guess a Poll would help here...
Due to overwhelming demand I will continue with the 15.1 builds for now. :silly:
I'd love to see a ROM that supports signature spoofing :good:
Anyways, thanks for the work you've done here
