Speed up Android charging on PC Connect, boost from 500mA when data transfer active - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

As known, Android will limit the charging current as 500mA while a data transfer detected. Is there anyone know how to get rid of this limitation, so the charging speed could be boost even while the data transfer is active?
So, I'm starting an automation work, which need the Phone to be connected to the PC all the time. The problem faced here is that the phone will always out of juice after ~12hours operation.
I don't mind about the phone get too hot or the battery will have it's life shorten, I will think about that problem later.
I've tried to double the cable input like the one applied on External HDD Storage, with no positive result. Also, have tried to use USB2.0 and also USB3.0 port with the same result. The image below:

Afaik, the limitation come from device itself, whether it's from this OS or the hardware itself. Since I've tried to plug the VGA Monitor with USB powered input to the PC, and it could draw current for more than 1A. So, actually, there's a possibility to draw more than 500mA from PC's USB port. Back to the main question, could we break the 500mA limit in Smartphone (Android) even the data transfer is active at that time?
Looking forward the feedback from you guys. And thanks for your attention

I've faced a similar issue where I needed the phone (Nexus 5) to be connected for adb but maintain a charge. The cable in your picture is not designed to do what you're looking for unfortunately. You might want to look into getting a powered USB hub (USB 3.0). I use an OTG USB squid to power my device and connect a keyboard, mouse and flash drive.
My motherboard has software I installed called USB Boost which allows my phone to draw over 500mA when I'm connected to a USB 3 port, but it's probably limited to certain Asus motherboards. I noticed certain cables worked better than others. I used ampere to figure out which one worked best for me. You should try accessing your BIOS and look around for any USB settings. Feel free to reply with the make/model and I can do some research.

So, in short, @btux81, have you successfully throw current more than 500mA via USB while connected to ADB using that OTG USB Squid?
The OTG is something like this, right?
Are the statement below true, regarding the configuration?
1. One of the squid's tentacle connected to a PC, that will maintain the ADB connection
2. Another tentacle connected to a wall charger, which provide current more than 500mA for faster charging

So, do you means that USB port in the PC only able to give more than 500mA if the USB Boost was activated (from your exp, it's only in Asus motherboard)?
Fyi, my PC using Gigabyte motherboard, and it's able to draw more than even 1000mA when I connect Monitor LED AOC E1670Sw-USB Powered in my USB port. Whether I connect it in the USB 2 or USB 3 port, the current delivered can be more than 1A. So, I don't think that it's related to the PC itself, but must be around the Phone.
As an additional info, by using dual male USB cable mentioned before, I've connected one USB male to PC (hope for the data connection) and connect the another one to USB Charger 2A (hope for faster current input to the phone). But, only 500mA total delivered through the cable (around 250mA from each USB male).

Can i use a regular mini USB to update my G!?

Hi I lost my G1 cable and I wanted to know if I could use a regular mini USB to update my G1 without having issues?
Yes, you can.
Make sure the miniusb cable you are using has a ferrite core/bead on it. Some folks with poorly shielded computer innards have experienced data corruption on cables without ferrites. If your miniusb cable doesn't have one, look around the house for a computer cable with a core that you can remove.

You can remove those things? I thought they were attached to the wire. I've just been using random junky usb cables with no beads on 'em and I haven't had any problems. I just checked the cord that came with the G1 and that doesn't even have a bead on it.
yeah hes saying, some people, so more often than not you dont need one, its for people who like to be extra safe especially if they end up bricking the device from corrupted data.
one thing that i have heard is that adb will not work if you are using a regular cable, there are a few extra wires and connectors in the usb cable for the G1, it is also a different shape than that of a regular mini usb connector. but for daily use, or just moviing files you shouldn't have any problems
Err, I have several mini USB's, I usually randomly grab one when I work with my G1, I have never had a problem with using ABD or any other type of problem. Also, I'm 99% positive the stock USB cable is no different then any other cable.

and i am 100% positive it is different from 99% of other mini USB cables. look at the input for the cable on your g1 and compare it to the mini USB port on anything else you have laying around your house and you will notice there is a difference

Yes, The input is strange, The HTC Shadow is the exact same way. Do realize, the stock USB's "Head", the metal pin, is not the perfect match for the slot on the Dream, it's a basic mini USB. Although, The included stock headphone/ear piece's connector, does in fact fit the input in the exact manor.
I think it's just the "head shape" that is different. I hvn't had any problems with other USBs.
Yes, currently I am using a Blackberry USB cable, and ADB and all functions work properly. In the past, I've used the original G1 cable, one for a Canon digital camera and one for an HTC Vogue, ADB works for all of them. Most of all, USB stands for Universal Serial Bus.. so I assume they are all the same.

It's an ExtUSB port, which is a HTC variant of the mini usb plug that has additional pins for audio. However the usb data lines are physically and electrically identical to standard usb, so for all intents and purposes unless you are using a special ExtUSB headset, it is plain mini usb. The supplied cable is a standard mini usb, so any other mini usb cable will work. Do heed my earlier warning to use a cable with a ferrite though.
I have about 30 different mini usb cables sitting around the house and i have probably used all of them once to or twice well doing playing with my HTC devices
Actually, that ferrite theory might explain things for me... I am experiencing some strange behavior when I use cables without the ferrite bead - the G1 will act as it's charging, but I don't get the "mount" option, i.e. it doesn't detect that it's actually connected to my computer. This happens both when directly connected to the computer USB port, and via a USB hub. I'm pretty sure that when I use a cable with the ferrite bead it also detects the computer and I'm able to data mount it.
Also, when using a cable without the bead, I have noticed that although the G1 says it's charging, it either doesn't or it charges really, really slowly, cause I could check by pressing power or menu once that it says charging - 76%, then turn off the display, then check again like half an hour later and it's still at 76%.
So I would actually say yes: the USB cable matters big time.
But of course, this is all based on my personal experience.

i plugged up an old desktop to retrieve some stuff the other day and realized that it didn't have usb2.0 and would not let the phone stay mounted. so just a caution if thats an issue.

strange, that's a similar thing that happens when not using enough voltage (the battery issue). I have a homemade battery powered usb charger, but it's only 4.5v as opposed to 5v. This causes strange issues with my g1 and my girlfriends. do you have lots of things drawing power (LED lights, lit up SATA cables, tons of usb stuff etc) because that can cause instability with your computer and sometimes undervolting usb things.
Ferrite beads more have to do with interference which doesnt seem like issue. Although i'd certainly use a cable with a ferrite bead when flashing or issuing commands via adb, flashboot etc.

I use that and no problem occurred.HTC cable have 2 side for connection and send or receive or power supply, but usb 2 mini have one side only.
can I use this cable without problem and damaging device?
Yes -- I've been doing that for years.
If the plug end physically fits, it will work fine. I've tried a couple mini USB cables that didn't fit, due to the way the HTC Ext-USB port is shaped straight on one side, like you mentioned.
CORRECTION: I think I just wasn't pushing the connector in hard enough. I have a couple mini-USB cables that came with various devices (a multi-card reader and a digital camera), and they take a little more effort to push the connector into the port on the phone. I didn't realize this at first, since I was afraid to damage the pins in the port. But they fit fine (just take a bit more effort than the OEM cable), and both transmit data and charge the phone properly.
I connect usb2 Cable and trasnfered data successfully.
but when I try to charge with usb 2 cable, device dont charge and only charge led be turn on.any body charge with usb cable?
Charging via USB is at a much lower rate. It can take 3-5 times longer to charge the phone that way.
I've only ever used the USB2 to transfer data/charge my phone since I had my Wing which was a good 3-4 years ago lol.

Go to Settings>System>Power, and make sure the option is unchecked: "When phone is on, do not charge when connected to PC".
Ok, tank you redpoint73, i have unchecked this option.
i just ordered the original data cable, which is supposed to have 11 pins,
I dont see how a standard mini usb with 4 pins can do the job of the 11 pins
Any USB-mini cable should work for data transfer and charging. There should have been one included with your phone, and it should have come with a wall charger as well.
There are retractable cables you can use. I purchased several from here:
http://www.itrimming.com/pcabusbx0007.html
They are a little delicate though. If you're rough with it, the end of the cable closest to the plug will fray. The site also has some great universal USB car chargers.

It doesn't do the same job, the extra pins are for composite video output, left, right and ground for audio, microphone, and possibly FM antenna. Four pins of the standard USB cable are all that is required for data transfer, even though it (USB) has five pins on the phone end.
You may have, as I did a failed USB interface. Check the phone on another computer to be sure it is not an issue with the computer and/or its software. All you have to do is verify the computer senses the phone, you don't need to sync them.
Two quick things...
I have one USB cable for a card reader that does not work for WMDC/disk mode, but charges the phone just fine. It works with the card reader OK, but no data on the phone basically. If you have problems with one cable, unless it is known to work on other WinMo/HTC devices, I'd definitely not always assume the phone is at fault until you've tried a different lead.
I've heard a lot of people say that charging via USB is a lot slower than via an AC mains charger. However, using SpoonCharge, the mA figures look the same for me on my phone - charging via mains charger never goes above "medium". This holds true with the original AC charger my UK (new, sealed and boxed) TP2 came with, as well as a TyTn II, Hurricane and Typhoon charger, and a non-HTC MP4 player charger - nothing goes above medium.

I have measured the current used to charge.
There are a few things.
1) Most PC USB ports are limited to 500ma., that is the standard. Try to pull more, and they usually do an auto shutdown or some form of limiting.
2) Any plain USB cable, or the factory HTC cable when on a PC port, leaves a charge rate pin floating. With that pin floating, the HTC device charges at a max of 500ma. Again, this is by design to not overload the PC port.
3) The factory charger, pulls one of the extra USB pins down. That tells the device that it can charge at up to 1000ma., twice as fast.
4) So, if you plug into an official charger versus a USB port, the charge rate is about double. BUT, you need to factor in the processor activity. If the PC USB is keeping the phone active, then the charge will take even longer.
I use my HTC on my motorcycle as a GPS. I have built a charger on the motorcycle and have used a switch in that 'fast charge' control line to lower the charge rate, or raise the charge rate. (long story, the phone and my regulator gets hot).
I have a pinout somewhere. A Google serach will find it.

[Q] Will this work ?

Just wondering if a typical cell charger can provide enough power to power these three things. (or if it will even work properly)
1 The Phone
2 A USB flash drive
3 HML adapter
What I want to do is connect power to the USB splitter male (I already have a wall plug to USB female adapter) then with the USB female ends I will connect a USB flash drive and then use a male USB to male micro-USB cable to power the MHL adapter. The phone goes to the other micro-USB end of the MHL adapter.

I want this for two reasons. 1 So I can play media from a flash drive to a TV or monitor and 2 (if this will even work) use it to connect a USB to XLR cable so that I can record with a better quality microphone to my phone.
I realize that the phone being able to recognize and use the flash drive or microphone may be an issue but I can take a chance on that if nobody can confirm if it will or will not work.
BTW: if you have not already noticed, we are finally starting to get some reasonably priced MHL adapters on fleabay now. They are ranging from around 20-26 CAD (one in picture is 26)
I would like to know as well, as that sounds like a great alternative to carrying around DVD's and stuff, maybe even an externally powered harddrive, would need extfat or ntfs support though for large files.

Linux reads NTFS hard drives and flash drives fine, so I am hoping that Android should also.
I was planning on getting the MHL adapter regardless anyway, and the other cables that I would need would only be like 10 bucks. So I am wanting to try it out since, like you say, opens up more options for portability that may replace other devices or at least take up less space.
I was mainly looking to see if I would hear a show stopper of why not to do this, like if this set up could damage something that is connected.

You will need a proper usb to go cable to connect the flash drive or hdd, i have connected a flash drive to my phone without any problems..
I would think you would need a custom kernels or ntfs-3G modules for the kernel you are using.
The big thing is if the phone can deal with being charged, output hdmi and connect to a HDD over the same usb port at the same time?
Maybe a powered hub?
Also wondering if there would be enough bandwidth on the bus to support that all.
The big thing that would be good for me is that I could buy a cheap self powered hdd, load it up with movies and stuff and watch it while at work where there's a lot of down time, and being able to charge and use tv out at the same time would mean I could watch the iplayer or something on the tv without having to worry about battery life!
Hey, connect a mouse and keyboard as well and your phone is basically a normal computer!

Good idea. This powered hub is almost as cheap as the splitter cable and should take care of any power requirements.
As for the on-the-go cable, I have different angled micro male to usb female cables already so that I can help take stress off the jack when using it while charging. My USB flash drive does not power up with this cable. I just assumed it needed external power. What is different about the OTG cable, did they twist some wires or are mine just meant for charging if they are not working ? All the pins are present and the cable is thick, so no reason why they would not just connect everything internally.
Thanks for the replies so far.

In order for usb to go to work you need a special cable, its got a special pin that's grounded or floating or has a few different values depending, the cables are very cheap on eBay or there's guides on how to make them.
OTG won't work with generic cables im afraid.
I just want this idea to work myself :d

Im sitting here with a SGS2 with a USB kb, mouse, and a flash drive connected to it.
SGS2> (usb to go cable) > Powered hub > Mouse + keyboard + flash drive.
To get random devices to work (not hubs, input devices) you will need to add the device ids, see this thread for more info, more info and some device/vendor ids and a huge list of almost every device/vendor id
Attached is a rules file with logitech and some other vendors, add and expand as needed!
Now I need to buy a micro USB > many micro USB's and a mhl cable!
The powered hub is a must or stuff just wont work due to the power draw.
Im looking at picture of the MHL adaptor, and they all have a USB port for passthough, so we can defo at the very least charge while outputting via it.
The big question now is if you can daisy chain and do MHL and OTG at the same time!
Well, unless on a lucky chance the USB port will work with a splitter, you cant do MHL and OTG at the same time. A real shame
Thanks for the updates and links veyka. It also looks like the OTG cables do not charge the phone with the jumpered pins, so I will have to make sure and mark the OTG cables when they get here.
I should have the rest of my cables arrive in about 2-3 weeks and will post an update of what will or will not work. Sounds like the OTG cable alone should work with the USB to XLR cable for a microphone, as long as I can find a way to get the phone to recognize it. Though it would be nice to charge at the same time as well which the OTG does not support.
Do you know off hand what the headphone jack will accept for inputs ? Will it take TRRS or TRS audio in as well ? I am just looking at more options for XLR to the phone for connectivity without needing a mixer. Then I will use a mixer as well to see how much of a difference the balanced XLR out will make.

In the end android should support anything linux does, you might need to build a kernel module (driver) or find someone that will for you.
You can get pretty much any input device going with the links above, but other stuff, I dont know im afraid
Hope lives eternal.
No clue im afraid
No problem bud. You have been more than helpful already. I already have a plethora of cables and devices for recording on laptop and PC with Windows and Linux. My Android uses for recording are so far purely just for practicing so that I have it down in case something of interest is created. So ease of use and portability is the main factor.
It also interested me just to be able to find different ways of recording since so much of it is done through software these says. The more knowledgeable I am with cables, signals and processing, the more options that I will have available to me. Though I still like to mic an amp then process afterwards.

USB OTG (USB host functionality) on Razr - Working!

I'm assuming Razr support usb host functionality as the motorola multimedia dock has USB ports.
I connected a samsung micro usb male to usb A female cable to it with a USB key (checked with a pair of models), but couldn't reach its files.
The Razr couldn't see it.
Maybe I'm missing something as I'm new to android world, but USB host functionality right from the phone without too many adapters would be the first thing I would show to any Apple's slave to show what modern phone is expected to do.
Hope I wasn't wrong as USB host capability + Bluetooth 4.0 together with its fast response and good audio were the quite unique specs (at least on the same device) which lead me to invest on it!
Anyone found a solution to use a standard adaptor or are we tied to the motorola multimedia dock (or hopefully at least a smaller proprietary adaptor?)
Maybe something like the Xoom 'desktop hack' could be a solution or is there any simpler one? I don't know exactly if this hack gave also OTG functionality together with unblocking the desktop mode (couldn't understand from what I googled around).

I bought it in a real life store, actually 'Mondadori informatica' which had in stock Razr since the 10th of November.
If it helps it is Model: ET-R205UBEGSTD by Samsung.
I checked it with two FAT32 memory sticks and didn't worked
It's useless.
You need a powered USBHost cable, so you need to connect the 5V to an external battery or an external power supply, and TX/RX to the USB end of the device you are connecting to the phone.
Or, alternatvely, you need a powered USB Hub.
It won't just work. Motos don't give any output power from the USB.
so did anyone find working otg usb host so far?
i have the proper nokia cable which works on the Xoom but it wil not work on the RAZR (i assume) until like the Xoom a custom kernel can be installed to access this feature.
dont see that coming anytime soon (least not Verizon RAZR)
Can't you all read what someone writes prior you?
USBOTG WORKS ONLY IF EXTERNALLY POWERED. HARDWARE LIMITATION.

If OTG functionality were just a matter of powering a device with an external source that would not be a big issue considering the avaiability of power reserve devices.
I think a step forward in understanding Razr's OTG capabilities will be given dismantling a multimedia docking station and playing with it as soon as it will be available.

1 VCC Red +5 V
2 Dāˆ’ White Data āˆ’
3 D+ Green Data +
4 ID none Mode Identification
5 GND Black Ground
LapDock:
+5V and GND connected directly to the battery of the LapDock, TX+RX connected to the integrated USB HUB.
Docking Station:
+5V and GND connected directly to external power (5V AC), TX+RX connected to the integrated USB HUB.
Oh, in BOTH, for enabling the Host Mode, pins 4 and 5 are shortcircuited, exactly as the USB OTG specifications.
Dismounted a micro usb male to USB female cable, to my surprise found it with connection 4 free.
Hence made the 4-5 bridge and checked again.
Yet no usb host connectivity with an external powered 2.5 HD.
The HD happened to charge the Razr.
Hence modified the cable disconnecting the +5V.
Now I should have an OTG cable with an external powered devices.
As soon as I'll find back my USB Y cable I'll check with it and some external devices to see if any of them is recognized right out of the box.
Yet I suspect that, like the Razr Upon USB connection let you choose between some differents kind of connections, maybe some settings has to trigger host mode.
Any idea?
You've done something wrong, mine works fine in USBHost Mode.

What an incredible news!
There are quite a bunch of posts around about Razr USB host capability, but up to now (to my google capabilities) no one succeeded in connecting any external I/O!
I'm pretty sure about the wirings (at least according to pure guessing from your schematics) as I checked all of them with a tester.
The wiring I made is quite simple
on the micro USB side:
contacts 4 and 5 bridged
Data wires connected to its corresponding ones on the female USB.
Power and ground on the female USB taken from an male USB connected to a charger.
Anything wrong?
Now it comes the detail requests:
1) What does it happen when you connect your cable to the Razr. Does it recognize it in some way giving any notice?
2) Rooted is needed? (Mine is not yet rooted).
3) Any special setup/tweaking to have OTG working?
4) Where do you access the external I/O contenct? From a directory in \SDcard otherways where else? Can you name it?
5) What I/O have you succesfully connected? Any kind of memory stick works? Any kind of HD? Mouse? Keyboards?
Thanks in advance in the name of all of the Razr's users interested in usb host functionality!
You would have to connect ground from the charger to the phone also.

Thanks Pajn for the suggestion, actually updated the wirings but with no luck!
Are you currently using a cable like this to connect devices to your Razr?
If the following questions could be answered at least we would know what to expect when the wirings are correct!

To bad it didn't work
No I have not tested. I proposed it because it have to be so electrically. If you don't connect ground the phone have no possibility to read the signal.
IE. if you power to things from different sources you should always connect the ground.
I don't have a cable so I can't test myself

The first try was with the Motorola LapDock, the second one with a custom USBOTG cable.
When you connect the RAZR to the USBOTG cable or to a LapDock, it says that a dock has been connected to the device (HD Multimedia Station or LapDock, both are recognized as docks, obviously).
So you have to connect something to your RAZR and it will be instantly recognized but the USB Device Connected notification is shown only in WebTop, not in Android.
The USBOTG cable HAS TO give power to the RAZR and to the devices you're connecting to it, otherwise the RAZR won't recognize the Dock Connected status.
Be sure your AC power is 5V with at least 1A, otherwise there won't be enough amperage for RAZR and the connected device and since the RAZR has got the priority, you'll only charge the device's battery and your connected USB device won't have the necessary power for working correctly.
ROOT is not needed for OTG USBHost operation as the device has been configured by Moto to work in USBHost Mode.
When you connect an external pendrive, the device will automatically create a device node and will automatically mount the connected pendrive/USBHDD in a directory created in /mnt.
I've successfully connected all the device I was able to use on ATRIX, including keyboards, mouses, an 8GB PenDrive and a 500GB external HDD.
I'm also about to see if I can do a modification to the ATRIX LapDock for including into it another USB HUB and a switchable (ON/OFF) 2.5 250GB SATA->USB HDD. If I'll success in this, I'll also post on xda-developers a thread with the instructions on how to do that.

S21 can't connect to PC via USB. Please help!!

A month ago I've updated my S21.
Since then, I'm unable to transfer data from my mobile to PC, AND can't connect my phone to Android Auto in my car multimedia
I tried different cables, ALL original ones but still same error:

So why I can still charge my phone like usual?
Does it make sense that I can charge my phone but can't connect it to my PC and transfer data?

Yes, because the USB connector has specific pins for data and power.
The old USB 2.0 and below used 4 pins, which were +5v, Data+, Data-, and Ground. USB-C uses 24 pins - 4 ground pins, 4 power pins, 12 data pins, etc.
A USB A to C cable has the GND pin on the A connector connected to all 4 of the GND pins on the C connector, and the VBUS pin on the A connector connected to all 4 of the VBUS pins on the C connector, but the two Data pins are only connected to the two USB 2.0 data pins (A6 and A7) on the C connector.
So, if the Data pins don't make good contact, but the VBUS and GND pins do, the phone will charge...albeit at the slow 5 volt rate. I assume when you plug it into the charger, it doesn't charge rapidly?
Make sure there isn't lint or dirt buildup in the USB port of your phone. Use a small thin plastic pick to gently scrape out any crud that might be in there around the connector. Don't use any harsh chemicals or solvents; you can use a small amount of isopropyl alcohol to help clean if necessary.

I see, thank you for the deeper explanation.
Although, I found a bypass solution which I don't understand how it works:
I took a UGREEN hub that I bought from Aliexpress a few years ago, I plugged the Type C connector to my S21, I took a 128GB Flash Drive and connected it into the HUB and guess what? it worked! so I managed to backup files from my S21 to my USB Drive via the HUB I put between them.
I still don't understand how it worked and why it doesn't with a direct connection of my phone to my Laptop..
The cables are great and Samsung original ones.
Also, 1 of the 2 cables is new, I bought it a month ago.

Are you sure it isn't a problem with your computer? You said connecting your phone to your car doesn't work either, correct?

Did you use the right firmware?
If you've already cleaned the USB port the only thing I could suggest at this point is doing a factory reset and flashing the firmware again, being careful to make sure it's the right one.
