Unable to sucessfully root MIUI 10 Global - Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro Questions & Answers

MODS: Please move this question to the HELP section - incorrectly posted. Thanks.
Hello,
I am trying to root the Global MIUI _V10.2.1.0.PECMIXM ROM using Magisk. I want my phone to remain encrypted, and having spent all day today trying to achieve this, I am turning here for help.
I have tried flashing via Fastboot and TWRP, have tried flashing Disable DMVerity (without disabling the force encryption) before, and after flashing Magisk. I hava managed to get Magisk 18 flashed and able to boot to the ROM, but when I open Magisk Manager (Installed by the flash) it updates itself and says it needs to install Magisk, proposing to download it - or patch boot img.
Every time I try to flash the downloaded zip, or try fastboot flashing the modified boot.img, the phone won't boot - it just ends up in TWRP recovery.
I have wiped data 100s of times to try to fix this, to no avail.
I have tried to boot into TWRP without flashing it, but this just hands on the TWRP flash screen every time.
Any help / tips would be appreciated.

Were you following any tutorial post? Recent xiaomi phones come with more strict policy on bootload locks. I'm not familiar with it, but if I didn't misunderstand, without BL unlock it's kinda dangerous to flash anything on the phone.

Thanks for replying. Yes, following tutorials, have unlocked my bootloader and can flash ROMs, just cannot get the latest MIUI 10 Global Stable rooted, without decrypting the phone. I have managed it on the Xiaomi.eu global stable, but not with the original Stock ROM.

Has anyone succeeded?

Thanks for replying. However, this tells me how to flash TWRP, how to boot to TWRP - I have no problem doing that whatsoever. I can successfully do that again and again.

INSTRUCTIONS: [redmi note 3]
1. Get into fastboot mode. Charge the phone first. Hold the power button and the volume down button simultaenously.
2. If you can open your current rom, open developer options by clicking on the build no several times in the about phone menu in settings. and select allow oem unlocking and usb debugging.
3. if not leave it... go on and connect your phone to the PC while in fastboot mode.
BUT, before that: open Command prompt on your PC. (search it on the search box). right click on it and open it in administrator mode.
type in: bcdedit /set testsigning on
hit enter and restart your pc
(this is imp.)
4. open the zip file and extract the contents. open the boot edl mode folder and click the edl.bat file. allow it to run.
5. now screen will turn black, do not disturb it. Now flash the twrp by running flash twrp.bat from the 'flash TWRP' folder.
6. Now go to Unlock folder and run the unlock bootloader.bat file.
your phone will boot into the TWRP recovery mode automatically.
if it opens in chineese you select every tab and find the globe icon.
if the globe icon is found on any of the tab select it and change the language to ENGLISH.

Now if you want to install any other ROM like cm13
Procedure for ROM installation
wipe your system from the wipe tab:
Now download the latest CM13 SNAPSHOT BUILD ROM FOR YOUR REDMI:
https://download.cyanogenmod.org/get/kenzo-snapshot.zip
and GAPPS:
http://opengapps.org/?api=6.0&variant=mini
do select the arm 64 version and mini one.
download from your pc and copy it to micro sd card. enter this card into you phone and go to mount in twrp.
mount the micro sd card storage.
select the zip file on the micro sd card from the install tab on twrp and flash it.
now go back and flash open gapps zip file.
now REBOOT to system. everything will work fine

Official method is worst. Its not like Motorola who gives unlock code within a min.
Try unofficial above method
Do we still need to flash modified Boot.img for first time flashing TWRP ?

Yes you need to flash a ROM. Whether it is official miui 8 or beta miui 8 or any custom ROM. Cm13 and RR v5.8.0 7.1-N is better.
Now if you need your ROM back with twrp and root access. Just install miui 8 official ROM through twrp and don't try to change the recovery its the safe twrp I provided with. And its important for unofficially unlocked bootloaders like you.
Since it is official miui 8 so it will block your bootloader but to prevent this just install universal boot image patcher after installing this ROM.
You can find it on net and after that reboot and install. Now to get root access download and install SuperSU zip from net via twrp and reboot.

I think you have to flash global kenzo 7.0 ROM through mi flash program on PC and then proceed to edl and flashing twrp.
I will be posting the instructions. Today only.
But I have unlocked it without this method
+1 , I get waiting for device also - because cannot see adb devices Drivers are installed
and when i try flashing a developer rom through miphone tool , im always getting errors

I guess you can test it yourself. Quite easy to fix things if it doesn't boot the TWRP. You'll simply flash the original recovery.img from the current MIUI full ROM installed on your phone to erase the TWRP without even erasing userdata. My bootloader is currently locked so can't test it now. About bricks, as you know this is an MTK so you have to be extremely careful.
The advantage with TWRP is you can mod the system so long as you enable write access to that partition. Flashing Magisk modules also works better via the recovery.
Last thing, I think the only way you can get root on MIUI is through the patched boot method. Flashing the Magisk installer zip in TWRP just doesn't do.

It means the flashing program in the zip. You can just flash the img file via fastboot command. I tried, it works.
Copy the .img file to your fastboot folder & flash .
Almost brick my device.....
Today I installed this in my redmi 9....
I was surprised when I see that my device is is boot into this recovery....
I am very happy but my happiness gone after a few minutes.....
When I boot into system I cannot boot into recovery.....
So I format all user data and chach....
But same thing happen To me....
I flash this recovery again with fastboot mode.. then I can boot into recovery...
I think it could be happen because my phone is encrypted... So I force dencrypted my device....
When I want to boot into system. I fail to boot no system and no recovery...
I think it is over but luckily I able to boot into fastboot mood ..then I flash boot and recovery....
I realise that there is no need to flash this recovery... Because you can root your phone without recovery....
If you try to flash GSI ROM... It will not happen because it does not support GSI ROM
There is no option to erase system and vendor separately.....
So who want to flash GSI via this recovery, I suggest you do not flash it because we do not need it this time....
I am not sure it may be happen only with me. Feel free to share your experience...

This recovry is only to flash magisk for now. Flashing ROMs not supported yet. Don't try to flash rom with this.
That's mean this recovery is not helpful.....
Because we root our devices without any recovery....

Does anyone have a guide on how to root a Xiaomi Redmi Note 10? I’m a novice Android user so any help will be appreciated. Thanks
You will need a Windows PC with Fastboot and Mi unlock tool installed. Here is what you could do without a TWRP to root through Magisk:
Apply for the Unlock process. This will take 167 hours and will factory reset your device. Backup your data before you do this. After the waiting period unlock your Bootloader.
Download your matching or newer Fastboot firmware from here. I assumed you have note 10 non 5G (mojito) based on that screenshot, if not, then that website has it for different varieties as well.
The Fastboot firmware is in .tgz format. Keep a copy for future screw ups just in case (will rescue you). Extract that archived folder and find boot.img inside.
Copy that .img to your phone, and download magisk manager 21.0 or newer and install it.
When opening the Manager on your phone for the first time, it'll prompt you to install itself, choose select and patch file and select the boot.img you copied to your phone earlier.
After it does that successfully, you will find a file called magisk_patched.img on the root of internal storage. Copy that patched .img back to your PC.
Reboot your phone to fastboot mode and connect to PC, flash that patched boot.img using:
Code:
fastboot flash boot magisk_patched.img
If flashed successfully, reboot your device and update/further install magisk.
Done, Your device is rooted !!!

Not really necessary for Xiaomi devices (apart from the Mi series) as far as I know, but maybe they changed that with the upgrade to android 11?

He meant disabling AVB 2.0 by flashing the vbmeta.img from the downloaded fastboot firmware by using:
Code:
fastboot --disable-verity --disable-verification flash vbmeta vbmeta.img
I personally have encountered many problems using Magisk 22.0 stable version, if you're using that, then either update to the canary version (you can switch the update channel in the manager settings) or use the older version 21.4.
If all of the above fails, just reflash the stock boot.img and your phone will boot normally.

precisely I did not take magisk v22 but v21, moreover I have exactly the same version as the first poster is 12.0.1 RKGEUXM.
To root I took the boot.img from version 12.0.2, was it an error?
I tried to reflash the original boot.img file from v12.0.2 but still in bootloop
I can not find anywhere where to take my original version yet up to date v12.0.1
@titifayls The original poster had version
V12.0.1.0.RKGMIXM (Global) while you claim to have downloaded
V12.0.2.0.RKGEUXM (European) which are not interchangeable. If you want to use either global or eu. Then you would need to flash the full firmware, you can't flash the boot.img from EU to ROM of global. It won't boot.
If you don't really remember which version came with your device, then reply to me again and I can give you further instructions. Tell me which OS are you using to access fastboot and if you want to preserve your data.

ha , sorry indeed I may have made a mistake, now I don't remember my exact version, it seemed to me that it was EU but in 12.0.1
I use ABD in fastboot and yes I would like to keep all my data that I did not save before wanting to root: /
I bought the phone on aliexpress, I am French, can I look on the box if I have any info on the version?

I asked if you're using windows or linux to connect to your phone. About losing data, maybe a clean flash could be required, but trying first won't hurt.
Here is how you do it: (you can use the downloaded fastboot firmware, because your device is unlocked, so region differences won't matter that much when flashing full firmware):
Inside that .tgz archive (that you unarchived) you'll find a script called flash_all_except_data_storage.bat for windows or flash_all_except_data_storage.sh for linux. (Do not use the flash_all_lock.bat/.sh script or risk a hard brick, so read carefully this time!!!!)
Connect your device in fastboot mode and open a CMD/Terminal where those scripts and the rest of the firmware files are. Use fastboot devices to make sure device is recognized.
If it is, then type in fastboot followed by dragging and dropping the flash_all_except _data_storage.bat to your CMD/terminal and press Enter. The process should begin automatically. If you get an error, make sure to have typed a space after the fastboot command and before the dropped script.
If it takes a long time during flash of super, don't panic!! Super.img is a very big file
Done!
If it still bootloops after that, then use the flash_all.bat script (will factory reset your phone and delete data)
It doesn't matter, it gives me the list of commands but doesn't launch anything
Wouldn't it be better to put fastboot flash?
don't bother, I'll take miflash, it'll be easier
I delivered an eea_global_images_V12.0.2.0.RKGEUXM rom with miflash by putting flash_all_except_data_storage.
I recovered everything at startup, my applications everything, so I redid the manipulation for the root and now everything works, perfect
thank you
I did the above process successfully.
Also if new update comes out, the process must be done again (not including the unlocking part of course).
The ROMs are posted here

so if i use latest magisk v22.1 , do i have to disable something like vbmeta.img or not ? or it is onli Mi Series that need to disable vbmeta.img ?

Only MI series need that. You should not have to do that. Also yes, I meant to say that 22.0 stable magisk can make the patched boot.img unbootable. Using the 22.1 canary is the way to go.

You would need to connect your phone in fastboot mode and use MI unlock tool again. It'll tell you how many hours left. Usually, you just need to wait exactly one week or 168 hours.

I used the latest as well. Most of the time, it errors out and I can't see the time left, but sometimes it works. Don't forget, you're giving them your imei for the freedom of your phone. Those imei's must be stored on Chinese servers and the tool must query those servers to get any info, depending on your country it may not work at all.
My experience with using an older tool has been very bad, the time was extended to 2 weeks instead of one on an another Xiaomi device. Avoid doing that and wait the requested time first.
After following the instruction my phone keeps rebooting.
I tried the flash_all.bat without success. What could I do?

[GUIDE] Downgrade from MIUI Android 11 Beta Stable to Android 10 Stable using flashable firmware

This might help you after realizing that you want to install custom ROM again after upgrading to android 11 MIUI but you cannot install android 10 or 11 based ROM and stuck with either boot loop or android rescue party.
WARNING: This might wipe every writable partition. Charge your phone at least 20% or more to prevent from destroying these partitions.
Instructions:
1. Download firmware from here
2. Download full ROM (either recovery or fastboot) from here
3. Save the firmware zip file it in either internal storage or sdcard. Reboot to TWRP afterwards
4. Tap install and find the zip file in your storage and install. Wait for a couple of seconds to get done.
To install full ROM
Recovery
1. After installing firmware from recovery mode, don't reboot. If you reboot the system it will fail to boot. Boot to fastboot if you fail this step and flash a recovery image. Proceed with next step.
2. Install full ROM flashable zip from sdcard or internal storage.
3. Format /data. Reboot.
Using fastboot
1. Boot from fastboot mode
2. Extract full ROM fastboot zip file.
3. Open miflash and locate the fastboot folder.
4. Choose flash_all. Click start.
5. The phone reboots itself. Boot to recovery mode and wipe data.
All done. The phone is now downgraded from android 11 back to android 10.
Note: I got 2 anti triggered when attempting to downgrade the phone using recovery and fastboot without installing firmware zip file first. RIP me I guess I voided my warranty anyways so doesnt matter as I already applied some insurance for my device.
TL;DR: Installed Recovery will get erased as I mentioned in WARNING. Please don't skip every step.
Edit: since it made confusion, I split steps for recovery and fastboot mode.
Has anyone tried this procedure?
Im on 12.0.6.0(EU). Bootloader locked (wait 3days) so no TWRP. Want downgrade to 12.0.8.0(EU) and flash Pixelexperience ROM.
It will work?
I'm a bit confusing... Links inserted in first 2 points seem to be the same link. So what I've to download exactly?

Its not the same. First one is cca. 80MB of size while full rom is 2.4GB for recovery and 4.4GB for fastboot.
I did this method yesterday and its working. No problems whatsoever.
The only thing i would add is you need both versions of rom - recovery and fastboot. Recovery when you flash for the first time in recovery and fastboot when you flash with Mi flash.
And my advice is, android 11 miui is really bad. Its not finished, it stutters a lot, u can't use third party launchers with gesture navigation (at least in my case, Nova lanucher), performance is bad.
Not worth any time.

i only tried recovery method and it works fine after days of trying. 12.0.6 android 11 is still buggy and miui needs to fix it a lot. most of apps are not well optimized for this flavor.
Today unlocked bootloader. Flashing 12.0.8.0 (i have 12.0.6.0 A11).
Everything work perfect. No bootloop, bootloader relock and works fine
People are probaly skipping some steps.
1. Download Firmware small size files
2. Download full Firmware, both - fastboot and recovery (put it on SD card, small and recovery)
3. Install Twrp or Orangefox recovery (download it from somewhere)
4. Enter into recovery and install small firmware FIRST, dont reboot, install big firmware (recovery version) SECOND
5. do not reboot
6. format data
7. Now reboot into fastboot
8. Extract fastboot firmware zip into new folder on desktop
9. Start Mi flash, select that folder where u extracted files and tick "clean only" on the bottom of the Mi flash if u want to leave bootloader unlocked and from drop down menu near that pick "flash_all.bat".
Thats how i did it.

Question about upgrading Pocophone F1

Hello all,
It's a long time that's i haven't post a thread here but i have a question.I have a Poco with MIUI Global 9.6 Stable (9.6.25.0) for ROM with a Android Version 8.1.0 OPM 171019.011 with root acces, unlocking bootloader and TWRP 3.3.0-0 installed.
I would upgrade my phone to something "newer" (A ROM with Android 12 if possible) and conserv the root access and my apps.
I have read that now ,we should have 3 files to do that (firmware, system and vendor) to make a wipe and install new ROM with TWRP.
So my question:
-Is it possible to upgrade Android 8.1.0 to Android 12 witn a new ROM? (i have read something about kernel in Android12 but haven't understand all)
-Have i missed some steps or just download files, boot TWRP,wipe and install newer ROM+firmware and vendor appropriate is good?
-Which ROM do you recommend?
Thanks for the previous answers.

It's not possible to switch from stock ROM to custom without doing clean install. You will have to root again.
First update to latest Official Stock ROM, then take backup of your files to your PC or to SDCard (if you have one) , flash to latest Official TWRP and check my POCO F1 Ultimate Collection & Guides. You can find everything there. I have awarded recommended ROMs in my collection.
Feel free to ask if you have any question regarding the guides.
Thanks for the answer.I have begin to read your guides.
If i understand good,it's not possible to conserv my root, unlock bootloader and twrp when i upgrade to android 12? Automaticaly i should root again my phone and restore with titanium backup my files,contact,....?

First you need to take backup of your files to PC or External SDCard.
Then you should update to latest version of MIUI via OTA if it's possible or via TWRP (you can use the stock recovery rom to do it via twrp). (You can also use my guides for clean install stock rom)
Then you should unlock your bootloader if it's not already unlocked.
Then flash latest Official TWRP.
Then flash latest firmware (not vendor) just to make sure you are on the latest. (You should be on latest firmware after updating to the latest MIUI version)
Then Wipe everything + format data according to my guides and flash the ROM you want. If you choose A12 Pixel Experience or crDroid keep in mind that these ROMs use their own recovery because these are encrypted by default ROMs and TWRP can't handle the decryption of A12 encrypted ROMs yet. So to make OTA updates and that stuff work correctly devs of these ROMs decide to use their own recovery which can handle the decryption of encrypted roms and as result to make OTA update work fine. Check the installation instructions of these roms in their threads. (Afterwards you can use adb sideload to flash stuff using these recoveries)
After that, flash Magisk since you want root.
Then you can restore titanium backup if you want.
OK i follow your instruction.Thanks
Hello retrial,

Yes use Fastboot Method to flash TWRP. No problem with encryption.
After that follow my clean install custom rom guide to flash the ROM you want. Also please check the instructions in the threads of ROMs you want to flash. A12 crDroid and PE use their own recoveries.
Basically tell me which ROM you want to flash to help you exactly with steps.
Hello retrial,
i have a problem to install TWRP-3.6.0-9-0 on my pocophone.Everything working fine but in step 8 of your guide,i can't find my twrp.img that i have copied in 2 different case to test :
8. Boot into Recovery by typing in cmd: fastboot boot <recovery_filename>.img (The file may not be named identically to what stands in this command, so adjust accordingly and write the full path of it, check the example below).
This command will not flash permantly the recovery, it will just temporary boot into it and afterwards you will flash permantly the twrp.img you copied into your Internal Storage or SDcard in recovery partition.
For example: fastboot boot C:\Users\Retrial\Desktop\twrp-3.5.2_9-0-beryllium.img
Have you an idea to why i cannot find my twrp.img in the boot mode?

I have all the steps on my guide. Please read it carefully. It boots back to mi recovery because you haven't flash TWRP yet just booted into. After boot into TWRP u need to flash twrp in recovery section so it will stay after reboot.
Please read the steps.
Download portable Minimal ADB and Fastboot and latest Official TWRP recovery.
Open cmd from minimal adb and fastboot and write:
fastboot boot and the path you have TWRP.
Example:
Code:
fastboot boot C:\Users\Retrial\Desktop\twrp-3.6.0_9-0-beryllium.img
Then proceed with the rest steps in my guide. Connect ur device to pc while u are booted into TWRP and copy TWRP.img to your device. Then in TWRP press Install Image and select the twrp.img u just copied into ur device. Select recovery and done.
I have made a video to show you what happened (sorry for the bad quality and the moove) :
I think a video is easyest to understand my problem. For information my bootloader is unlock and usb debugging ok.

Hmm strange, probably of MIUI. Anyway since you are going to flash custom rom, when u flash twrp in recovery go back and select wipe and wipe everything (read my clean install guide), go back press format data type yes, and then reboot to TWRP.
EDIT: I just saw u rebooted to system. That's not what we want. Press reboot to recovery.
i reboot first to bootloader after have flash the twrp.img in recovery. That's only the second time that i reboot to system to use the normal mode of the phone and reboot after to recovery mode to show you that mi recovery is back.

The TWRP flashed correctly. You overlap it again by pressing reboot to recovery from MIUI updater.
Don't do that...do the combination to boot to TWRP after flashing it. Power+Volume Up.
And continue with clean install steps in my guide to flash custom rom.
In my guide I write nowhere to boot to MIUI and press from MIUI Updater reboot to recovery, please stick to my guide and you will be fine.
Poco f1 update not
