debloat your xz1.. - Sony Xperia XZ1 Guides, News, & Discussion

OK, not sure how many folks venture off this forum an look at some of the other Sony ones but this is from the XZ2 side of the house by Serajr. Those who like to clear out the bloat that Sony likes to pack on their phones.. Though it is safe on non rooted phones I advise not to as removes the crash monitoring files and you will get an annoying pop up regarding " rch keeps crashing" it only shows
up on booting.. those that are rooted can simply push the 2 crash monitoring files back to system /app and reboot as there is a backup is made of all deleted apps in your internal drive, be warn it deletes a ton of stuff..
Those who are interested have a look here.. https://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-xz2/development/oreo-debloat-script-v1-0-t3798979, all credits to the author, and it works fine as I've done it to my phone and it works really well.. to give you an idea, I had give or take 209 programs on my phone, ran the script end up with 159..

fine utility
Be warned though that it deletes the IMO useful email app (you should look at the script can edit it).
I had to get a replacement from APKmirror.
Over many years I tried to get a better email app than stock but found nothing I liked better ...

This is sooooo good. THANK YOU
Exactly what I've been looking for and work as a charm on my G8342 Dual.
Once I made sure there are no updates installed för bloat I just run the script and everything is working out of the box.
Just perfect and makes firmware uodate and debloat a piece of cake

[Q] Question about APK files.

Hello!
First and foremost i apologize if this has already been answered (I'd guess it has since it's a pretty basic question). I tried doing various searches (here and google) and all they brought back was how to install APK files . My question is if I take an APK from my phone can I install it on another device? Sorry I'm still a bit new to Android and dont know much about how APKs work and if there is security restrictions embedded in them making them only work on the device they were downloaded to or anything of the sort.
Thanks!
To my knowledge there are no such restrictions on APKs. You can pull them from one phone to be installed on others as you see fit.
Awesome, thanks for the quick reply!

If it's system apk's you will run into issues when pulling from different phones. All really depends
Running ICScrewD ROM
yes and no. basically whats been said. a system app (aka one that i on the phone after a stock flash) will most likely not work from phone to phone unless it is the same type of phone on the same rom. however market type apps (including downloaded apps from the internet) will most likely transfer from phone to phone
Astro manager extracts non system apps you have installed into apks. Makes it ridiculously easy to send an app you have to your friends. Your app data is not included in the apk. One of the best features of astro manager in my book.
Sent from my páhhōniē
Its market apps, so i think ill be good to go! system apps i could definitely see not working though, guessing they're more hardware/system specific.
Thanks for all the responses!

at&t hotspot apk

on CM, and they took out a lot of bloat which is good
but there was an app on stock at&t rom that would log you in automatically when you get to at&t hotspots(like mcdonalds) etc
anybody have this .apk?
i download my previous rom and opened it up, didnt see anything called that
anybody know the exact name to look for or has the apk ? thanks

hmmmm ok, well i saw that but skipped over it
because on all my other roms/including stock, i dont remember it being an app,it would just auto-connect
and it was always a system apk as well
let me go check it out though
It was excluded because CM10 has absolutely nothing to do with ATT. Or any phone for that matter. So unless somebody kangs CM10 and adds in an app, it's going to always be as bare bones Android as you can get.
Essentially, CM10 isn't ever a bloat removed version of any phones stock ROM, because it's build from aosp source, so the bloat was never there to begin with, and likely wouldn't be added in anyways.

ATT hotspots is a stock rom system app ...
The only way to get it ...is pull the apk from a stock rom ...g

I like that app as well. That wsa the only thing I didn't like about my ROM, so I did a nandroid, restored to stock, pulled that system app, and restored my nandroid.
Lucky for you and anyone else that wants it, I just happen to have placed it in my Dropbox.
Make sure to place it in /system/app (Don't install it like a normal APK) and change permissions to rw-r--r--
You will need to manually connect to attwifi the first time if you haven't already.

the system app one is just hotspots, mostly ATnT ones i believe
the one in the market can affect connection to your home wifi and work etc
plus, ones an app you can open, the other isnt

the system app one, like if you're at mcndonalds , will connect to it automatically (mcndonalds is one of the stores on ATnT wifi partnerships)
if you didnt have the app, you can still connect(its free wifi no password) but you would have to first open up a browers, read the agreement, and hit accept blah blah, before you can start using the wifi. again the system app skips all that and just connects you

It also skips all the payment info at some places that still charge for WiFi, so long as it's powered by AT&T. I wouldn't mind having this feature back as well, even though I'd rarely ever use it. Honestly, my cell is faster than the WiFi at any Starbucks or McDonalds around here. But I can see a use for it while traveling. Maybe download one of the stock ROM flashable zips and just extract the necessary apk, put it in /system/app and see if it will work that way. I'd try myself, but I'm a tad busy lately and already in trouble for all my downloading this month.
EDIT: Forgot to mention, the one on Play is too bloated. I don't want that junk handling all my WiFi.

Well, Mr. Useless Retort, I was searching for this very apk and was about to download it until I looked at his stats. You see, the fact that a post is a year old doesn't make a lot of difference if it has information you need. You see, Mr Useless, that's why the forum goes back many years.
Note that my reply wasn't intended for him, it was to warn off anybody else who might think about downloading this.
See how that works??
I think you can get this apk from the market, or what I do is google for apks -- especially older ones when the market updates me and the update sucks. I haven't been burned yet.

fk, I just spent past 5 hours to restore backup to S5

pardon me, but i'm pissed. I started fiddling with this thing yesterday with no luck now i've just spent the past 5 hours with this crap...i upgraded from the s3 and have no fkn idea why they've made some features so fkn difficult....excuse my language.
here's my problem, before changing phones i used mybackup to backup sms, mms, call logs, contacts and apps. Well after searching i see the reware directory needs to be put in the legacy/emulated folder....i did that but mybackup still can't see it. No problem, i'll do everything with good old Kies...but i can't find kies on the S5, market or samsung store. i've tried every fkn thing...i plugged in my old phone and downloaded easy back up and some other crap that's for rooted phones only. i can't find the easybackup directory. i downloaded some wifi transfer apps and the free ones have transfer limits...
can someone please help me before i throw this fkn phone and break it? thanks and btw my s5 and s3 aren't rooted.

First a question: Are you afraid of rooting/tripping knox?
Answers: 1) Root will help with this. Get titanium backup PRO, but it requires root. I have been using it for I don't know how long.
2) Root will help with this. The S3 can be rooted and then returned to stock for your backing up needs. Once you root the S5 for your restoring needs, knox flag will trip and stay with you.
3) Calm down! Read the above answers again and think about it. He He good luck
I use My Backup Pro and if I'm not mistaken only the pro version will restore from one phone to a different phone. I'd also suggest using the cloud option. I backed up my S4 and restored to my S5 in minutes using the cloud and did not attempt it on a memory chip. It's also possible that KitKat security changes might make reading the data from the chip a problem. I am also not rooted yet.

Good idea to try the cloud, I never tried that.
KitKat only messed up the WRITE to SD card permissions, there's an app that restores it though on the play store. READING from the SD card to restore your backups and other things is not a problem even without the fix.

Super Backup from the play store is great for backing up and restoring all your messages, contacts, and call log. It saves them as tiny XML files, and even gives you the option to e-mail it to yourself. Then you can restore it just as easily in the app on the new phone. You can browse for the file, so you don't have to worry about where it's saved. Just e-mail it to your gmail and download it right back on the new phone.
I used this method for myself (I have the stupid AT&T variant that is going back soon, no root, no hope, no nothing) and friends and family with no root.
As for the apps, I just let Play Store reinstall it it whether it's after a full wipe and install of a ROM or moving to a new phone.. But if you have certain apps that can't be obtained from Play Store, and since you obviously don't have Titanium Backup having no root, Super Backup can also backup the apps, then browse to the backup folder for the APK files it saves and move it over manually. Use a file explorer to open the apk and install.

thanks for the advice, but i'm not rooting right now. this is my 7th Android phone, i rooted the first 5, but i didn't root the s3 and have no plans of rooting this unless there's some incredible features that i really desire. i use to root back in the day to get the features that now come stock. Most of the things i dreamed of having on my phone now come stock, so i now don't see much need to root. Besides i have nightmares about the last 2 devices i rooted....gps no longer worked, phones started rebooting by themselves more often (every android i had did that but after rooting it seemed to happen more often)....i got tired of doing camera fixes, gps fixes, bluetooth not working.......i don't know, maybe the game has changed in 2014 and roms are more stable. I was deep into that starting with my g1, then my Nexus (the very first Nexus, i paid like $500 for it). I respect the developers and those who root their devices, i just don't see much personal need for it with these megaphones on the market in 2014.
What would rooting my S5 this early give me? Its currently fast enough, smooth, i love the camera, everything works like a charm(gps, bluetooth, etc...), my battery is CURRENTLY lasting all day with heavy use (i'm no fool, i know that wont last forever, especially coming from the another samsung phone). With all the widgets and things i have, i don't have a desire to root, maybe months from now, i'll get bored with the phone and see some good features....but rooting now.....you care to share your favorite features that a rooted S5 is currently bringing?
thx

do you know the name of the app that restores it? also, Strychtnine, i have mybackuppro, but saved the backup to sdcard...i no longer have another phone so i can't backup mybackuppro online. i used easy backup and saved to google drive, thankfully I was able to restore my sms, mms and call logs....unfortunately many of my contacts didnt restore, i never had that issue with mybackup, its always been my preferred and most trusted backup app dating back to the G1.
A couple other questions while I have a few of you in this thread.
Where is Kies? is it no longer available....i used it heavily with the S3, i don't see it on the s5, playstore, or samsung store. Is there another free app that will allow me to view files on my computer and make changes like Kies? Wifi Transfer is cool but it has a very small transfer limit (i think it was like 10mb or something). I'm not into Google Drive, i use it for hosting music but its a pain to me....first 100mb takes around an hr to upload, then i have to download it on my phone, which takes another few minutes. I honestly prefer the good ole days of plugging the usb to the computer and boom! By the way, has that feature returned with the s5? i plugged usb to computer but it says can't find software. I searched online for s5 drivers and can't find a thing. Any suggestions? i took several pics that i want to send to computer, i don't feel like using google drive, with gmail, i'd have to attach all the files then download them.....i wish i could just connect phone to computer (usb or wireless) and copy/paste files. thanks

I feel what your saying about the past devices and the problems that Custom Roms can create. Root however is different. I use root to run apps that require root i.e., Titanium backup, Greenify, GSAM battery, etc...
Kitkat 4.4.2 and probably Android going forward is some what weird if you think about it. It brought great features like being able to turn off apps (bloat) that you don't use in manage apps, and allows moving apps to the sd card...But on the same note they crippled the SD card write permissions for what reason? Oxymoron? So again here you need root to be able to edit the permissions file or use that SDfix https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nextapp.sdfix from the playstore. Note the first thing In the description is ROOT REQUIRED.
I also like Xposed and modules which allows me to customize certain things without needing a custom rom. Note that Xposed is causing some people problems with lag, S health, and Private mode not working.
I have two S5's both with root. On one S health works but Private mode doesn't. NO noticed lag.
The other one however, has extreme lag and freezing, and both S health and Private modes broken don't know why the difference. I don't use S health nor Private mode so no problem there but the lag was terrible so had to uninstall Xposed on the second one. Root alone doesn't break anything.

I just plugged it in and windows 7 installed the drivers right away...Maybe once you install Kies above it will install the drivers for you... The S5 actually come with USB 3.0. If you have USB 3.0 on your computer the transfer speeds will be insanely faster than previous phones. Why use Kies just use windows explorer for transfers, Kies just becomes a middle man!

I understand your worries but as the above member said, you have nothing to worry about. I have the International unlocked version (Not AT&T's) and I rooted it with 'Kingo Root' 2 weeks ago and everything is fine.
So, by acquiring root, you can use Titanium Backup to disable/freeze or delete AT&T apks. Now I suggest you only freeze them first, reboot your phone, use it a bit, make sure there are no errors happening since some APKs are needed by the system for your phone to function or else it will crash and not boot-up properly. So freeze first, test your phone, if all is good, delete them. I personally only delete apks that I am sure I don't need or those that I can re-download from the Play Store if need be. The rest, I just freeze them and forget about them. They can't act on their own if they're frozen =).
Btw, you can still disable/freeze apps without root by going to System settings - More - Application manager, and swipe to "All" category, and find the ones you don't want, click on them, and then click on "Turn Off". (I still prefer Titanium Backup since it shows me all apks and freezes all of them)

Great! glad it worked out. I had an S4 prior to this and this Zoom is quicker and smoother I just miss the bigger screen + resolution and thinner body.
There's no kitkat update yet but apparently they announced it and should be out in the coming months hopefully!

I've removed these 7. Keep backups of them in case you want to update your system. The official update from Huawei checked for and patched these system apps. If they weren't found the update would fail. Restoring the apps fixed that problem.

Titanium Backup would work. Or App Master. Or manually back them up using ES File Explorer. As long as you have a backup that's all that matters. You'll need these system app backups for when the next update comes out (unless that update wipes everything out).

I've removed these 7. Keep backups of them in case you want to update your system. The official update from Huawei checked for and patched these system apps. If they weren't found the update would fail. Restoring the apps fixed that problem.

Where can I find the Facebook app to delete it? I've gotten everything else. Thanks.
Honestly, I don't see a reason to remove any of these apps... they are in the system folders so you won't gain any space or anything, just disable them and you won't see them and any updates will still work fine without doing anything special.
TBH, compared to many phones, this list is very minimal.
I guess I just want more control. That's one of the reasons I choose to root my devices. It's OK to stay completely the way the phone comes, regardless of how much or little bloatware is on the device. It is up to the user to choose. That is one of the many reasons Why Android is so popular.

This sounds like very good advice. Thanks acejavelin. I never really thought about it but since the apps are in a non-usable (for the user) partition, your recommendation makes perfect sense. I already pushed your Thanks button.

Control of what? You don't get any control because the apps are in a separate partition that you can't use. In fact, you lose some control because when you delete the apps you can't get OTA.
Just freeze them so they can't run. There's no point deleting them. 7 seems trivial though. I froze more than 50 on mine. There's nothing from Huawei on my phone except the camera app.

I normally back them up so I can delete and save space. Should I need them later on it's simple to restore. But freezing them is a good method since it will let you know if it shall cause issues later on.

Comment above has pointed out that you don't gain space by deleting system apps. Or rather, you gain unusable space.
If you do prefer delete/restore, remember to back up the data (tweak TiBu to backup full data cuz it will ignore data if data is larger than the apk itself). I had problems with Dialer/Phone and System UI apps without original data. Navigation bar will be lost (it is there but it can't be touched/controlled) and incoming calls cause crash.

One, you do gain space, two, that space is usable. An average user wouldn't seem to know how to take advantage of this it seems. But to me, I make use of it everyday. - @acejavelin

I don't use TiBu. Never really cared for it. I use other methods more command-line based within the terminal emulator.

This is why it's good to know what to delete and not delete. If familiar with your device then it becomes second nature, but when jumping ship and getting a new device it is typically best to freeze and see the results. Although freezing is no different than saving and deleting. Only thing that distinguishes these two methods is when you freeze the system app, it's still there (and yes, using space). Where as when you keep it safe, say, your sdcard, then it's as simple as placing back, and/or if the particular file causes the device to go bonkers then TWRP makes it possible to fix the problem as well.
