so I returned my sgs2 today and got a new one (old one had scratches). Now it seems to me that there is some flickering with black lines (very faded) on certain brightess settings on mainly white sites using a browser.
I noticed the flickering appears around 16% - 19% brightness settings (using "brightness level" from the market).
This flickering only appears only if "auto adjust screen power" is NOT selected, same brightness with it activated shows no flickering.
Also last but not least if plugged in with USB cable the flickering stops as well.
Can anyone re-produce this flickering?
1. Download "brightness level" from market, go between 16% - 19% (try step by step), with me its strongest at 17%.
2. Ensure "auto adjust screen power" is deactivated under Settings>Display
3. Open Internet and just look at a mostly white page
4. Ensure USB is not connected.
Can you see some slight flickering? Lots of lines across the screen?
Wonder if its just me, might go back and return this one tomorrow then
I assume no one suffers from this issue?

I get black/dim horizontal lines flickering on the display at low brightness regardless of my "auto adjust screen power" setting. I'd describe it more as a shimmering of the screen. It's very distracting - I first noticed it whilst trying out the Kindle app and it made it very difficult reading the text.
I believe it's down to interference with some radio component of the phone. I've searched various forums and haven't come across many mentions of this so maybe it's a bad batch and I'm considering returning mine. It's frustratingly variable so I hope I can demonstrate the fault in store...
I'm wondering if the increase in brightness just masks the effect rather than eliminating it. At lower brightness settings, any local differences in brightness are going to be more noticeable.

have you noticed any change at certain battery levels?? Like if the battery was at 90% its easily noticeable, once its like below 70% I'm not able to re-produce it, no matter what I try down to 0%.
So maybe since it seems to be only from 90% - 70%, it could be to do with the current/voltage at certain brightness levels with white background...very unique problem it seems..I'm thinking of going to the o2 store but I most likely wont be able to re-produce it then and there so will they still exchange it? hmmm lets see..

I'll note down what the battery power levels are over the next week or so.
I went into the O2 store after work and reproducing the effect was indeed difficult. I had it showing the effect in the shopping centre whilst sitting down at a bench. I had it showing the effect whilst in the queue to wait for an O2 staff member. Fifteen minutes later, once I'd got to talking to the staff, it worked fine. All I could do was explain the problem and ask if anyone else had reported it. They advised I "kept an eye on it over the next couple of weeks".
Really frustrating. I'd entertain the possibility that my eyes are faulty but I've shown the effect to someone else and they agreed it was distracting.

Yea same here. Had the manager refuse to exchange it today as i already excjanged one phone...couldnt reproduce it then and there but on on the way there i managed it..o2 sucks

I was not able to reproduce it using your directions, but I have to say that I also noticed horizontal lines flickering on white.
I tried to reproduce it but I can't find out what it is related to.
So it's doig it just in random fashion

does it flicker with auto brightness on? You might want to download an app like "brightness level" and set it to different settings to see when/where it flickers...mine usually flickered at 17% screenbrightness when battery was at 70 - 90%

Yes I did download it and followed yur directions to try to repruce it. But I could not. I set then brightness to various level from 100% down to 0, but no luck. I have to try now when battery is at that level. Then it could be some kind of intereference. Lines I noticed on mine are very subtle and close about 1 mm
Ok, confirmed: 92% battery, brightness 17% on white or close to white screen color, there are horizontal lines like some itnerefernce/noise. Annoying

sorry guys to hear u got the same problem....I never found a resolution to it apart from returning it to the store....once I managed to reproduce the issue infront of the manager he swapped the phone straight away.
If you got the same issue make sure you get to the store with the battery level and brightness level that shows it up, ask to go into a dark area to show it properly.
First o2 store I went to the guy refused to look at it properly and as it was light outside he couldnt see it anyways. Second o2 store I went to, the manager went downstairs with me and turned off the lights to see the flickering because it shows only on low brightness so make sure you take that into consideration when in a bright/well-lit store.

same here. flickers at low brightness with battery under 90%. called samsung hotline. the problem was new to them and the only idea they had was resetting the phone. tried it but unsurprisingly its no help. galaxy s2 could be great but it has just too many annoying hardware flaws

Well I noticed this on my SGS 1 !! ... when I have PACKET DATA turned on this flickering starts. It starts really hard when i have this function turned on, but when i disable it there's nothing...

Realise this is an older topic but i have recently noticed this issue in low light with Auto On. Battery level at 85 percent. For those that had their phones replaced did the issue continue? Has anyone seen this with the yellow tint also?
Noticing this issue as well on Villain ROM 2.4. Auto brightness enabled and 90% battery.
*Edit* Just did a CWM restore to stock rooted and the flickering seems to have gone. 85% battery, auto brightness enabled.

i got my phone replaced 2 months ago and was very happy with the new one since it had no screen flicker... until now. so my current sgs 2 now also suffers from screen flicker and my only options are to send it to samsung and hope to get a replacement or to live with it. and since im beginning to think that this might be a general problem i tend to keep it. although i have to admit that i dont like my sgs2 as much as i did before...

I'm having issues with my screen not turning off at times and I think it has to do with Smart Stay. I'm not even looking at the screen and the screen would stay on. Last night I was playing around with my phone, I left the room, came back and my screen was still on. The other issue I have is when I'm reading a long email the screen would turn off. Is this a software issue or do I have a defective phone?
Forgot to mention, I have the Rogers version.

Your face has to be centered in the upper right hand camera. That is a little off centered. So turn your front facing camera on and center your face. That's where your face should be. It's not using your eyes but it's using facial recognition to stay on.
As for your screen not turning off... how long is your screen set out for?
Lastly, turn smart stay off and see if it does the same. That will let you know the real problem.
I have noticed this effect on my phone as well. Above my computer area, is a lamp, that is somewhat round. Every once and a while the smart stay will detect an object that it thinks is a head, however it is not. So the screen will stay on. Just move it. The smart stay does not work 100% in lower ambient light also. So if this screen off issue is occurring more often at night or in low light environments, that is fairly typical. Your phone is fine.

Ok, I turned on my front facing camera to center my face. I have to say that's an awkward way of holding the phone to make sure Smart Stay detects your eyes.
My screen is set to time out for 30 seconds.
I did turn off smart stay last night and my screen turned off. I know it's an issue with smart stay. But could it also be a front facing camera issue? It seems to take pictures okay though.

I've noticed lately strange thing in my new S3 (not branded, not rooted, official 4.1.2). I've spent Last weekend in mountains, it was about -9 celsius degree, and I had my phone in an external pocket so it had probably frozen a little. When I tried to take a picture, the screen remained dark, only the touch buttons lit. When I tried to reboot with the side button, I saw "samsung galaxy SIII..." sign, and a blue wheel, and heard the sound, but than the screen remained dark.
The phone rang for an incoming call, once I was able to answer by touching the dark screen, second time I failed to answer (obviously it got colder).
After moving the phone to internal pocket when it got warmer, screen got back to life.
It happend again when I put my S3 into holder in a cold car (still in the mountains - though I wouldn't connect it with the altitude above sea level ).
I'm curious if it happend to someone else?
I wonder if it's due to AMOLED properities, or rather hardware malfunction?
I will contact support, but since manual recommends using the phone in 5-35 C degree temp. range, I'm affraid, they can evade.
Now the Q&A section is sad because you ignored it
Is anyone else noticing that you can see ghost images behind every screen?

It is called screen burn, there is a thread dedicated to this problem. Search for screen burn on this forum!
I'll check that out but how could it happen and this is the 3rd one I've had and they all did it. That's why i assumed it had something to do with the screen overlay.

life is this with V10, all have the same issue...mine only have 9 months since i buy it and have ghost images since 2 months from today and no solution...the only solution is send it to LG Repair Center and they change it, but mine lose the guarantee when i unlocked the bootloader so...i will not buy the screen since this is a known problem with V10 display.
better keep it going cool and avoid high levels of brightness only when is needed and avoid playing games since that warm up the phone and the screen will show ghost images. Then when it happens lock your phone, shut down the screen for 3/4 minutes and the ghost is gone...you need to do it everytime you see a ghost image and have trouble with them.
i dont bother with that...i love the phone anyway, when the screen die by itself i change it for another, but now let it rock even with ghost images.
Sofwtare side has nothing (mod or app) that can fix your problem...its the display problem (hardware).

Though I can prevent any ghosting from becoming visible by installing "Bluelight Filter for Eye Care" and set the filter to the black color with an opacity of just 3% (hardly even affects the maximum brightness). Stopping the display from showing the whitest of colors prevents the ghosting to apperar no matter how high brightness you have or for how long. At least on my unit. So now my screen is permanently perfect instead.

I had just did a factory reset and it's actually gone this time. I'm sure it will come back though.
I've been using v10 for a year now this image retention/ ghosting is really annoying but there's actually a solution to it by using screen filter.
if you apply the filter as soon as you turn on your phone after a while, when there are no temporary burns on screen. They won't come back if you keep the filter on.
I use blue light filter but I'm sure every filter will work even if you keep the filter at low opacity for example at 20%, it'll still work.
Give it a try.
and one more thing if the filter is on you might get an error while giving permissions to apps. so you have to turn off the filter when you get "screen overlay detected" error.
Screen burn is a problem on AMOLED Displays. After 9 months my S8 had significant burn in due mainly to gaming activities. I don't enable AOD and limit screen time on to 30 seconds. What other measures can be taken to help save the beautiful display on your S9 device?
Use lower screen brightness. I try to use 50% or less depending on environment and my GS7 didn't run into any issues with screen burn-in.

I've used nothing but OLED phones since the Galaxy S2 and none have had screen burn. Even my old S3 that i have as a spare is fine. I game quite a lot on my phones too, some times for hours with no breaks but still haven't got screen burn. I never even purposely try to avoid it either.
I know that constant high brightness levels can cause burn-in on OLEDS much faster though. I use around 30 - 65% screen brightness in general, but only because of battery reasons. My S7 Edge is ok as well and i had AOD enabled for 15 months.
Screens are not created equal though and some burn easier than others. Even when they're the exact same model. There's a channel on YouTube called "Rtings" and they're testing multiple OLED LG TV's, and some are burning faster than others. So maybe you just got unlucky with the S8.

Burn is inevitable with AMOLED, but newer phones seem more susceptible to it. I never had LED burn problems until migrating to the S6. Also, white backgrounds such as on YouTube tend to be the most damaging, because white color is made using all RGB pixels at once.
My AOD burned the number 2 into my screen. It was quite evident. Brought it to T-mobile and they confirmed it was definitely burn in.
Luckily I was within my 14 day protection. Had it replaced with no charge.

Just don't use the phone at maximum brightness for prolonged period and you'll be good. Never had burn ins on my S4 and S7, at least not yet, screens are still perfect to this day. I rarely set the brightness above 50%.

I set full immersive mode globally using adb, AOD is off, screen brightness on auto but kept below 50% as much as possible, screen timeout is set to 1 minute. I don't play games more than 10-15 mins usually and I try to move 100% of whatever is being displayed on the screen after 30 seconds to 1 minute (even if I have to turn the screen off and back on to accomplish that).
A bit much, I know. But I had a Galaxy S4 back in the day using the screen very moderately, and within 3 months it had terrible blue burn in from the status bar and icons on the home screen Im guessing...
Taking no steps. There's no need whatsoever. People are still using Galaxy S3, S4, S5 devices with no burn in.
This whole burn in thing is taken way out of proportion.
If you get burn in so quickly, you should contact Samsung to get it repaired under warranty, because it's not normal for it to happen that quickly.

My S8+ had no burn in after a year of usage with AOD always on, with high brightness. There's literally no need to take any preventative steps. That's just overkill.

I use my device as I see fit. Not taking much in preventative for burn. More towards batt life. I have never really burned any device. My wife's s5 had Facebook burned in pretty good. I used aod for several hours at night. But it's been great on every Sammy device I ever owned
Way out of proportion. I mean any static image can and will eventually burn to a oled. But I'm sure I'll have a new device before it ever gets as bad as a several year old s3 s4
Well, first thing I'm doing is NOT using a dark theme. (With totally black portions). I found that using such a theme will create uneven screen wear (burn in) , because there's portions of the screen that just wont be affected, like for example think the YouTube app's video portion.

This is my third Samsung with AMOLED. The first was a Note 2. I started playing a geo-location game that needed to have the screen on to get credit for moving around. So it ran for hours each day. Annoyingly it has a bright green box in the upper right (it's a button you use all the time), and it got burned into my display within a few months. When I got my next phone (Note 4), I took every precaution. I ran an app every night, all night long that cycles through all the colors, full screen, to aid in preventing it. I tried to mostly use my geo-location game at night with the screen brightness turned almost all the way down. It helped a lot. I went over 2 years before screen burn in started appearing. I think I made a mistake with the overnight app. I had the brightness turned way way down when perhaps I should have turned it up instead. I changed that and the burn in faded out for a few more months, but I would notice it whenever I used the game outside during the day (hiking and such), because I had to turn the brightness up to see the screen. Now it no longer fades and is every present on my screen. The phone is almost 3 years of use at this point though.
My last step I have been doing is using one-handed mode to change where that button shows up on the screen. I figure if I can prevent it from sitting in the same place all the time, it will go a long way to preventing the burn in.
Feedback from many different viewpoints is good. However it sounds like some people are saying 'screen burn in is no big deal. I've never had it'. Just because it hasn't been a problem for you, doesn't mean it's not real for other people or that's it's blown out of proportion. We all use our phones differently.

I think that for the typical phone user, the only place burn-in is likely to be a significant issue is on the status bar, and maybe the nav bar. The S9 is my first AMOLED phone with soft buttons instead of Samsung's capacitive buttons, but the only place I've ever noticed any burn in before is on the status bar, and really, who cares about that?
If, OTOH, you frequently keep the screen on for long periods using an app with fixed in place, high-contrast items, there's probably not a lot you can do beyond reducing screen brightness. If the app allows any customization of those items, like changing colors, try to make them less bright.
Well.. having owned a few devices with AMOLED/OLED displays(S2, S3, S6, S8+, S9+), all those devices had burn ins, some worse than others.
Since the S8+, I made a habit to not max out the brightness(I'd go 100% manual on all my previous devices before S8+), l left it on auto brightness, and if I figure that it had gone too bright, I'd move the slider back to 40~50%. And also hide the navigation bar. While web browsing, I hide the status bar too. Throughout the one year of using S8+, I'm happy with how it was holding up. And continued with these habits on my current S9+. Won't say that those are compromises to the experience, if anything it's even better, with hiding the navigation bar and status, it gives it more immersive experience while protecting the display.
