Even with root and TWRP, the updates will be downloaded but not the OTA zip. The full ROM will be downloaded when it detects that the phone is rooted.

From what i read, those who updated to MM while rooted didn't lose root. Did you successfully unroot first?

I may bite the bullet to flash .111 (F3213), but I don't want to brick the new phone.

You have to use the correct boot.img file
The boot file and the firmware should be of the same version
I downloaded here in xda a rootkit that there says is for my version but it didn´t work for my phone. just like previous user i have the F3213.

Resurrection Remix without Root

Is it possible to install the Resurrection Remix on my Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 without root?
If so, is there a guide somewhere that shows how to do it?
Thanks.
Okay the answer is no
But not the root is required the open boot loader is needed
And you can lock the boot loader again so no need to be afraid

I thought Xiaomi will unlock the bootloader if you request to do so. I've sent a request from here:
http://en.miui.com/unlock/
If Xiaomi do unlock my bootloader, is a root still required?

Nah. Just an unlocked bootloader with a custom recovery is enough.

You just need an Unlocked boot loader
After waiting a month, I have finally got my Redmi Note 4 and have managed to :
- Unlock the bootloader
- Install TWRP
Do I need to install "lazyflasher-no-verity-opt-encrypt.zip", if I wish to now install Resurrection Remix or any custom ROM, or can I avoid installing this file and install Resurrection Remix, if I don't want to root my phone?

You don't need to flash lazyflasher.zip on a custom Rom. Root? Most if the Roms are rootless..
Thanks Sachin.
Somehow I've managed to root the device and I'm not sure how. All I did after the above was install Resurrection Remix with GApps. I installed Titantium Backup, which confirmed root access. Is there anyway I can unroot it?
Why would you want to unroot? If the bootloader is unlocked there is no reason to not root a device. Flash Magisk and go ahead.

Ideally I'd want to use Sky Go on my phone and I don't think it works on rooted devices.

No twrp was used @Yogart99 , check my post over the development section for more info.
Just to be consistent with your question, I used Magisk to patch the bootloader and got root BUT CAN'T upgrade to the latest march security patch.
