[Question] Vertical App drawer? - Samsung Galaxy S9+ Questions & Answers

Hi everyone
I like everything about s9 and s10 except horizontal app drawer.I would much prefer vertical and not paginated (or paginized) app drawer, so that i can just scroll through apps like in most other phones.
Can this be achieved with a custom ROM or add on? if so - which one?
Thanks for your advice!

The best way to achieve this without rooting is to install a new launcher. The most popular one is Nova Launcher . It lets you choose between horizontal and vertical scrolling and is very customizable in other ways as well. Since you would no longer be using OneUi, IMHO, you lose some functionality of the features samsung puts in the phone doing this however some would see this as a good thing.

Hello,
Thanks for suggestion. Yes I am aware about custom launchers - and i am considering this solution. I was wondering if it is possible to change One UI to vertical drawer before going down that road.
thanks

Your feelings on touchwiz?

I had ordered this without ever even giving touchwiz a thought. Figured the phone would show up, I would play with it about 5 minutes, install new launcher, never look at touch wiz again. After I ordered it I downloaded the user manual and did some reading and it appears that there is some interesting and useful work here that without having the phone I think I like. Watching videos to see if I could see some of the stuff in action seemed to me to confirm that there is some good stuff there.
My question is how are you liking touchwiz? Not the phone, the phone with touchwiz. I Have encountered an older version and was left heavily underwhelmed. Please be specific, I like this, I hate that, and give a reason. If its just because that works fine but have a reason.
Remember guys this is mostly about opinion and little about fact. Leave folks be with theirs and vice versa.
edit.... Also please add in your predilections toward flashing roms, or not, as it were. An opinion from a daily flasher is much different than one from someone who never flashes and runs the stock rom.
I thought I'd hate it but I'm actually really liking it! Some features I love:
- The lockscreen is great and you get little tabs you can slide when you get a text or missed call.
- You can reject a call with a text message (So handy)
- Resizable widgets
- Customiseable dock
- Hold down 'Menu' for search in apps
- Quick settings in the notification tray
- Movable homescreens
- Customisable app tray
and more Besides you could always replace it with another launcher and I'm sure custom ROMs are on the way.
I changed it within seconds to launcher pro. However the drawer in launcher pro isnt smooth at all, im actually thinking of changing back.

Try Go Launcher EX
It is faster than Launcher Pro
I have a lot of time flashing roms and all that fun stuff so I have an idea about the possibilities going that route. Going to edit the op in regards to people adding their experience and preferences as far as flashing roms and such go. Thanks for your input. As a question Im on a custom rom now and the widets are all resizable. Are you talking about the touchwiz widgets then?
Another question would be can you access some or all of the touchwiz widgets from another launcher or do you give them up?

If you go use a third party launcher, you usually lose access to manufacturer widgets, since they work in a slightly different way from plain stock ones...
But if you go Launcher Pro Plus (it's a couple of dollars for the plus version) you get more "custom" widgets like that in return I guess it just depends what look you are going for.
So you have the handset and can confirm they are toast? Figured they would be but I haven't done touchwiz yet.

Nope, hence why I say "usually". I've been in this business for a while, but not got the SGS II yet.
I have to admit that I like Touchwiz. On SGS, I dont have a SGS2 yet. In my opinion, Samsung Glass lockscreen is a way better than the Android stock lockscreen.
At the moment I'm in love with Zeam laucher but I always come back to Touchwiz from time to time. Launcher Pro and ADW have always left me cold.
Did more reading, I see that you can change the fonts system wide. Does this carry over to a new launcher or do you lose that? Pretty nifty feature.
In my personal opinion, touchwiz 3 was dire. But after using my Galaxy S II for a few days touchwiz 4 has come a long way. I'm sticking with Touchwiz for now
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App
I've been playing with the demo models at the office solidly for the past 2 days, and as a Sense users for the past 2 years, I really don't like Touchwiz even in it's newest incarnation.
Probably more down to being used to how everything works in Sense though, I don't like change
Touchwiz 4 is a huge improvement over 3 in my opinion. Using it on both my SGS and SGS2 now. The new calendar widgets on the SGS2 are awesome as well Touchwiz 4 can also put folders in the applications menu now
Semi-regular flasher (ooer) - would generally flash a new rom every couple of months. Been with Android since the G1 so have a pretty good idea of what's possible.
Things you KEEP going to another launcher:
Lockscreen
Dialler (reject call with text etc)
Holding down Menu to search
Settings toggles in the notification bar
You can resize widgets with LauncherPro Plus
Things you might LOSE
Movable homescreens (most launchers do this, but not with the motion sensing twist action like touchwiz)
Customisable app tray (again, most launchers do this)
Resizable widgets (possible with LauncherPro Plus)
Customisable dock (most launchers do this)
Overall, I don't miss the touchwiz launcher, but I like some of the other features. Looks like the Samsung widgets are standard and work in other launchers too - just added Mini Paper, Ap Mobile, and Yahoo! Finance, and they seem fine.
krabman - I've changed my system font to Helvetica S (Settings -> Display -> Screen Display -> Font) and in general it looks great! Carries over to most apps too. The only downside is that it's slightly wider, so you get some buttons wrapping For example, the password "Remember / Not Now" dialog has one, I forget which . . .
Overall, ditch the launcher (I like LauncherPro, smooth for me) but enjoy the other aspects
TW4 is not as bad as many are saying. its still not nearly as good as SENSE 2.x. and I wont even attempt to compare it to the new 3.0 version. I sure hope someone port it.

Same here, playing with both the SGS and SGS2 and yes it is an improvement for sure, but I am still not liking the iphonish looks.

You pretty much mentioned what I was about to! Using launcherpro plus with widgetsoid and pure calendar widget. I have to say that launcherpro work a bit smoother on the original SGS for be, but with the upcomming update that should be fixed.
Overall, combining the best of what I had on my SGS before, with the new functions from touchwiz 4!

[Q] Any way to change the app drawer?

Has anybody found a way to replace the app drawer for a rooted user? I dislike the screen based grid and would rather have a scrolling grid.

Get Go launcher EX from Market it is free it have 5-7 types ( you can change theme also I use Honeycomb theme with it)
In the Market, type in 'launcher', there are loads of replacements which have loads of settings etc.
I recommend launcher pro, or launcher7.
Launcher7 is really sexy
Thanks for the suggestions, but these change the GUI more than I want. I only want an app drawer replacement.

In that case I'd go with 'ravitejas' suggestion of Go Launcher. It looks similar to touchwiz and you can change the app draw to scrolling type. It just takes a bit of messing about with lots of settings...
Or if you'd like an actual list of apps you can press menu when you're in the app drawer and select list view...

Unfortunately, my Galaxy S II does not have the list view for some reason. That would have been a decent solution. Oh well.. can't make the phone the same in every market it seems.
What about solutions that work with rooting? I did root the phone awhile back, hoping that I could use this to my advantage. So far, no real use.
Weird that yours doesn't have a list view option...
Can't help you beyond stock rom I'm afraid, haven't rooted...haven't seen any real need to...

The problem is you want to replace part of the launcher program but not the whole thing. Root or not it's hard to replace "half a program". Someone could probably, theoretically at least, hack the program apart and replace it that way but that's a lot of effort.
Are you sure you don't have list view? Open the app menu and hit menu
Pick a launcher, i recommend launcher pro or ADW EX (far better than standard ADW launcher)

I'm probably going to take mine back if it can't, too much bloody bloatware and poor app drawer
Bloody hell ppl, have a little patience. The tab's only been out a few weeks.Give the devs time to crack it.I'm sure it'll be worth it in the end
Sigh...
Questions in the general area. Development stuff in the development area. K?
Bloatware? Seriously? This tablet as among the lowest actual 3rd party bloatware I've seen lately. On top of that the app drawer is one of the best features of this tablet. We clearly both bought ours for completely different reasons. If you don't like 3rd party apps, you can actually uninstall them. If you're talking about wi-fi checker and the remote...I don't know what to say.
The app drawer is pretty poor, there is no way to have the icon view in alphabetical order without manually re-ordering all the icons - only the list view which is not as efficient.
The Sony icons are ugly too, on my homescreen there are about 5 blue/purple sony icons and the rest are the nice app icons and it looks a bit odd.
This with the wi-fi bug disconnection bug is making me think I should have just gone for the galaxy tab 10.1

Have you tried installing adw ex? changes the look and feel of the tablet including being able to remove the top bar, which gives you more room. The app drawer is fully customisable then, too. You can also change the icons for the pre-installed software. Can recommend using the fluxed adw theme.

Changing scrolling of app icons

Hi there, I'm running criskelo v37 and really liking the whole customization set up with Jkay TW4 ect but I'm lost on one thing.
How do you change the way the app icons scroll across the screen on this ROM?
I used to have Launcher pro on my lite'ning rom to change this, is it the same with this ROM?, or is there a way without installing a launcher app?
One thing that caught my eye was a gs2 that the icons scrolled round in like a circle in a 3d affect, anyone know how this was done???
Cheers
Mark
I don't think you can do this with TW launcher, you will probably have to install a 3rd party one.
You can get the 3D effect with ADX Ex.
I thought so, cheers for confirming this.
Mark
If you're looking into a free alternate launcher, consider Go Launcher EX. It's highly customizable. You can achieve a TW4.0 feel with the modifications you desire.

YB Android Launcher of Choice

Hi guys!
As the thread title says, what do you use as your Launcher on YB Android?
Stock one works, but I am curious to see if anyone here used a different launcher. I am tempted to try out Leena or Sentio to replicate that netbook/PC look.
Installed the Arrow launcher a couple of days ago and am in the process of getting used to it. So far so good especially for the just released tablet version. A decent review (of the phone version) that was done before the last update can be found here:
http://www.androidcentral.com/microsofts-arrow-launcher-astonishingly-good
Cool! Will have a look!
Tried Squarehome 2 for that Surface look..and I think I'll stick with it for a while as its the closest to a usable notebook environment..
Sentio is good, just doesn't load automatically while Leena needs a lot of improvement (like desktop icon sizes can't be resized independently of the font)..
I use Apex Launcher on all my android stuff.
It's hard to find launcher that properly support landscape tablet layouts.
The best I've found were ADW launcher 2 and Arrow launcher (it has a new tablet option).
In the end I went back to the stock Lenovo launcher.
Apex does work good on tablet landscape mode, plus we can change icons and layout plus gestures as well..

What permissions does this Apex has? Has any one thought about what kind of data these launchers steal?
I use Nova Launcher across all my Android devices (phones & tablets). Zero problems.
Does any launcher has the 'back, home, apps' icons grouped towards the left corner of the task bar, like the stock launcher? Its convenient.
2 Similar to the stock launcher, do they show the running apps icon in the task bar?
I try leena desktop UI from play store ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.m_lang.leena) it's fine but not perfect.
I tried Microsoft Launcher, and it seems to work for me. The new tablet implementation got better, and also looks nice without having to spend a lot of time customizing it.
I use LaunchTime an open launcher from fdroid open android apps. works well for 6" and larger screens
https://f-droid.org/packages/com.quaap.launchtime/
Squarehome 2
YB with other android launchers.

I currently have multiple launchers installed on my YB, including Sentio Launcher. I am using Go Launcher HD as my primary, but Microsoft Launcher and Square Home.Tablet also work fine.
I am using Nova Launcher as I do on the majority of my devices. It is clean and gives mena nice dock for the media consumption apps I use most frequently.

Nice looking setup you got there!
I also use Nova for most of my devices (if not for the Yoga book, it should have been All devices)..Nova can achieve any look you'd want to have easily, too!

Question - how did you get rid of the Lenovo app drawer icon in the bottom left next to the recent app icon? I've been dying to try and figure that out.

Mark, had to think about this one for a minute and then realized the answer was in the screen shot itself.
Short answer: Can't be doe
Rationale: In the top right hand corner of the display, you can see the icon indicating that the screen shot was taken while having the tablet in "laptop mode". While in laptop mode, the app launcher icon disappears because you have the dedicated key on the keyboard to get to the app launcher. It would be a redundancy to have both. I tried it out and as soon as the tablet is in either tent mode or display/tablet mode, the app launcher shortcut re-appears.
Its also a custom version of Android MM, and most of the system UI tweaks don;t work.
I actually did find a way - I installed this app - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=xyz.paphonb.systemuituner
It did the trick! I am very happy that it did.
