Sony Z5C in bootloop - Red LED flashing 4 times *edit only no screen - Xperia Z5 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
A while ago the back of my Sony Xperia Z5 Compact had a big crack. Since I was opening my phone to fix this anyway, I decided to replace the battery + ribbon cable for the side buttons and vibrating motor as well.
All seemed good when I deassembled it and put it all back together. Unfortunately my phone hasn't booted since.
When booting, the backlight lits but I see nothing on the LCD. I get a blinking red LED for 4 times, after which it stays solid red for a little while followed by a reboot.
Somewhere on the internet I found that the 4 flashes represent a defective LCD, although I have no verification of this.
What I've tried so far:
All the possibilities given on the internet using the volume up/down/power button.
Using the off button near the sim tray (10 sec pressed / 120 sec pressed)
Used the repair function of the Sony Xperia Companion (which succeeded without any result)
Changing ROM / Kernel using flashtool after unlocking the bootloader
Using the old battery to see if this makes any difference
Measuring the L fuse, which seems to be fine.
Charging my phone for many hours
Unfortunately non of this seems to work and I'm out of options. All was working fine before. Also the new battery gives 3.8 Volt and the ribbon cable with the new buttons works.
I can get my phone into fastboot / flash mode
Does anyone know what else I can try, or is it a defective motherboard and is it time to say goodbye to my z5c?
I hope someone can help me out
Update:
I flashed another rom (nougat 7.11 ) and used greenkernel. Now the phone stops flashing red. The battery shows its normal green (fully charged) LED.
Unfortunately still only backlight and no LCD.

Hey QuuN,
I got the exact same problem, and tried exactly what you tried, including measuring the L fuse (and it was normal).
I would just like to know if you finally achieve to repair it.
I hope you are doing well in these times of pandemic crisis.

Hello Destruktanc,
Unfortunately I wasn't able to fix the problem. As it was an older phone, the costs for replacing the motherboard / LCD wasn't worth it for me.
Hopefully there is an other solution for you which doesn't involve replacing hardware. As for the pandemic crisis, I'm doing great. Hope that also goes for you.

[Q] Xperia X10 won't turn on.

Hi. The phone application was not functioning well and the F/C dialog showed up. I powered off the phone and from that point, the phone won't turn on.
The battery was fully charged before this happened.
When I press the power button, the phone vibrates for half a second, the screen brightens up but does not show anything but a black screen.
I removed SIM and SD cards, removed the battery and performed the above steps but nothing happened.
I also tried to put on the charger to see what's going on. Once I plug the charger, the phone's screen brightens but shows only blank (even without pressing the power button)
When connected to the charger, the green light for charging is on for some minutes, then goes off automatically.
I tried to connect it to the PC, and PC Companion finds the device as usually. It even shows the dialog on the pc screen to mount the device.
I tried a hard reset, but does not work
On some point, the sony logo appeared and then a dialog saying: "sorry process system is not responding". The first time I pressed Force Close and the phone turned off. Immediately after that, the phone turned on and showed the exact message. I pressed "Wait" but nothing happened in the next 15 minutes.
I called Sony's support center and they suggested a software update. Did the process exactly as it should, but again, even after the software update the screen shows nothing but black. It is all the time brightened for some reason.
I tried to turn off the phone for some time by removing the battery, but as soon as I put the battery back on, the phone's screen brightens and stays that way forever.
The phone was functioning perfectly up until this issue. The only application I had installed apart from some games, was AWDLauncher. On the screen I had only a TASK widget and a battery status widget.
The phone is 3 months old and has been always in perfect condition.
ANY help would be appreciated!!!!
Many Thanks
Try to format phone with this method hope it should work as it seems the issue is with OS only ..

Many thanks for the prompt reply. I will try to do so and let you know how it goes!

I tried the steps found in the link you gave me, but I couldn't go any further after step no (5) from the tutorial, as it would require to enable Debugging mode and I cannot access the OS (since the device won't turn on).
Is there a way to format all the contents of the device and have them replaced by running SEUS (as it always says that my device is up to date now)?
Was it this:
http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/sup.../detailed/updateservice/xperiax10?cc=gb&lc=en
That Sony Ericsson told you to do?
If not, use that.
Download it, follow the steps when it says you have the latest version, press "Install Anyway".
Hope this works.
Hi itTim. thanks for the response
this is what i did but no improvement at all ((
Sounds like you broke your LCD screen somehow.
That would suck because I broke mine and it cost me $200 to fix.
Hi Hypercore.
Yes that could be the problem. The thing is that I always took rally good care of the phone, always carried in a leather pouch and never droped it. How sensitive is this lcd anyway?? Did you notice any cracks on your lcd or was the problem simillar to mine?
Thanks
When you turn on the phone does the lcd backlight turn on?
If so, look for any faint lines of color (usually a hairline size). If you see any of those then your screen is cracked.
the backlight is on, but there are no lines of colour on the lcd screen.
another weird thing is that the green light on the top blinks one or two times every time i put on the battery. even if the phone is off, once I insert the battery turns on automatically after a couple of seconds.
If all else fails you could try to flash back to your original fw with the tools here:

That won't do anything.
I had almost the same issue. Nothing worked. But, when I removed the battery and left it for a day (24h) without it, it just started working again. Still working without issues..
Good luck!

Phones are very wierd pieces of technology. I once bricked my k610i and that's a phone that's supposed to be impossible to un-brick, but out of nowhere a month or so later i picked it up, hit power and it turned on perfectly. Made no sense at all, but it worked.
Taking the battery out for a long time probably took all the electrical charges from it (kind of like how a computer power supply / monitor can hold power charges) and reset your handset.

Indeed. It could be a frozen chip, memory fault, power-regulator and so on.

if you have done this and did not worked , then it is the LCD.
send it to workshop and check it there.
Guys i Really need the solve of this problem , my xperia has blank screen now without backlight and the phone completely doesn't work . when i put the battery and prees the switch botton it gives me 3 red signals , i've updated and hard reset but it didn't work , and btw the LCD is fine , any idea. did removing the battery worked???? . please answer
After a looooot of time since my latest post, finally my Xperia came back to life. There was a battery failure which means the phone was ok all the time. Weird thing is that the led light showed that the battery was charging ok. I removed the battery and after a lot of time it is working ok again. This was really really odd.
FYI for anyone else that gets this issue.
I just had this for the past hour after trying to change my baseband....could not get it back for anything.
What I did finally try was run another baseband via flash tool, connected to usb and it started flashing....after flash phone powered on again...yeah I agree with everyone, that is freaking scary when it happens.

[Q] Xperia X10i Bricked !

Device Xperia X10i, Unlocked Boot Loader, Rooted, Installed Jelly bean Rom of Feralab. Device worked perfectly on it. Since yesterday, after waking up, found my device bricked. Symptoms displayed after device got bricked :
a) If connected to wall charger with battery present, device only displays green light for 15 to 20 seconds max and then green light goes off. Then no activity in the whole device.
b) If connected to wall charger with battery absent, device again shows green light (with battery absent that is).
c) Tried SEUS, Answer : After the complete successful operation : Nada Nothing !
d) Tried Flash Tool, Still Nada. Tried flashing Xperia Stock Rom : Replaced System.sin , Header.sin and what not etc. "Even checked No Final Matchup" while flashing. Answer : Nada. !
e) Stock Used is "X10i_3.0.1.G.0.75_CUST-IN_GENERIC_1237-0692.ftf" flashed it. Still Nada ! However, no errors occurred while flashing.
f) Device when trying to switch on, displays green light blinked once, then vibrates and then just goes simply Naaadaa !!!
Nothing at all. Please help. If this helps, I am attaching log file of flashing device via flash tool. Man, device is just bricked. Answer and help appreciated . Thanks in advance.
Since I can't attach link to external log file on paste bin : here's I have uploaded the log file.
Update : Since I was on Fera Lab's Jb earlier, I want to notify that my "Unknown Sources and Debugging" was not checked in phone settings. It wasn't on and now that its bricked, I dunno whether it will make any difference or not ? In bricked state, with "Unknown Sources and Debugging" not checked. Can't get device to on, blinks one time green signal and then vibrates and nothing afterwards !
Update Number 2 : Hey, after completely keeping aside the battery for more than 24 hours, I connected the device to external wall DC supply (while battery was removed and never inserted after the 24 hours interval that is). After connecting the device to DC wall supply, it gave me the same response, flicked and showed green light and then vibrated and then nothing ! F1 anyone. !!!
Update Number 3 : http://talk.sonymobile.com/t5/Xperi...on-Flash-mode-even-when-plugin-to/td-p/273134
Just Googled my problem and came to this link. I can very much relate to the link although, His device was water locked, (there was this small white rectangle, if it is water damaged then it will be red) Surprisingly, his device which was water damaged shows the same symptom as mine. So, i checked mine, but the sticker or white rectangle for moist / humidity checker is white totally. So I guess it can't be water damaged, although, it showed the same symptoms !
Update Number 4: Since green Light was always On, I thought what if its in flash mode and much to my surprise, the device is in Flash Mode when I switch it on, how I found out : While flashing via SEUS, I didnt press the back key and the device got connected in flash mode by default, So i narrowed down the problem to something that : My device boots to Flash mode and not as it normally should ? Is it a mother board problem ? Can it be cured ? (god no please not mother board problem) So ? Any thoughts anyone to make it come out f the flash mode. ?
C] Tried SEUS, Answer : After the complete successful operation : Nada Nothing !
after the Successful Operation did you unplug the phone and tried to turn it on?
After the Successful SE Update Services was successful my phone didn't start, then i removed battery and reconnected, power on and works fine.
search in forums for Dr Goodvibes his suggestions did help me.

Your phone indicates an unlocked bootloader, just for your information.
What's the thoughts on the battery? Was it in a good service state?
Take the battery out of the phone for 48 hours and then put it back in the phone and power the phone on.
The green light for a few seconds indicates the phone is attempting, or in a recovery state.
Your phone may have just had a 'moment' and has a "locked instruction", that just needs to be cleared with no power applied to the chipset.
This has worked for others and is more voodoo than science, but worth a try.

Oh thanks for the update about the boot loader state. i definitely be keeping it apart for 48 hours and will update you regarding the same. thanks for the reply, you know i love this set of mine and your precious replies gives me hope.
Regarding the battery state, i guess it was okay, gave me a 1 day backup on the phone. So i guess it was in a kinda okay service state. though am not sure whether its fully charged or not. i don't actually know the power state / current charge level of the battery though coz i found the device bricked. if there's anything you can suggest, will be really helpful. though thanks for the information.
So I waited and waited for some more time, couldn't wait any longer for the 48 hours duration. Does t has to be 2 days ? I just wanted to bring my device back to life. Though, after giving up shortly after 12 + hours, I flashed it again, it did successfully, although, nothing even now, green light followed by a vibration and then boom. nothing ! f1 help needed ? btw, does it has to be 2 days?
I would have placed the battery back in the phone and pressed the power button and see if it booted, or allowed you to get to CWM Recovery with blue light or xRecovery(if installed).
One day, one week. How long does residual power remain in a circuit board to hold the current date/time before resetting?
Maybe buy a cheap BST-41 1500mAh battery for the XPERIA X10 and try that. Could be just a bad battery.
You could check the battery with a multimeter and see if it still has a charge.
My knowledge base stops at this point as I have no experience beyond this.
Good luck.

Thanks Dr. Goodvibes, I definitely will keep you posted. Though, when I plugged the battery in, first I did check, nuthing ! green light + vibration. and then it goes blank. I installed my feralab jb rom via xRecovery so, yes it is there (installed) but afterwards I have flashed the stock via SEUS so i guess even xRecovery is gone now. I am not for sure. Though it was installed earlier. Right now I am thinking of keeping it apart till the time i found a new battery, it can be even 2 + days. Even 1 week. I will wait for a week now. Thanks for letting me know all about this. Keep me posted.

[Q] Xperia P black Screen of death

Handset screen goes black every now and then. The issue persist not for all the time I could use the phone continuously for at least a week without any issues. After a week or so black screen shows up but apps are working in the background. Tried updates , Power + Volume Up buttons and so on ,everything went in vain. I switched off the phone for three days and used it again normally for a week before the black screen issue again comes up. Every time I got to put the phone for complete rest two or three days before using it normally. What could be the real issue here?
Hi, my Xperia P is old and goes black screen couple times. The only solution I've ever done each time is to push Power + Volume Up buttons, and then the phone recovered. Perhaps my phone is not as seriously old as yours. Wish someone could be there to help you, good luck.
My phones goes to deep sleep too, only thing helps is hard restart.
I have no idea what is causing that, I reflashed so many kernels and roms and it didn't change the fact phone is failing me.
I had the same problem, the display connector got loose on the inside.
Had to open the phone and reconnect it properly, now it's working fine again.
I had a similar problem but I did not face it that frequently as you... A temporary solution is to press Vol Up + Power button simultaneously and let it reboot...

How to reconnect it ? seems like hardware issue. Btw sorry for the late reply.
Just pull it off and then back on, that should fix it.

I had a similar issue 2 times with months in between , no response from power+vol up , no lights when charging , no response from pressing on the red button behind the flaps, last time it happened after a reboot from an update and still having plenty of battery left.
I tried putting it on the charger for a whole day with no result , put it back in the box to return it , decided to let it rest a few days first , since someone had the same issue and it magically came back to life when he got back from a vacation.
So i try to turn it on 2 days later and it worked again magically indeed, functions totally restored till this day.
Hope this helps a bit

If it's like the Z1 Tablet you could try a complete power down by pressing the volume up/down, and power button for several seconds, then try to do a recovery via the Sony PC companion (so long as you can get into flash mode), if it works you'll loose all data, but it's worth it IMO

I've got something like this going on too. Plugging it into a blackberry playbook charger seemed to give it a charge when the OEM charger wouldn't work. It came back to life. I've also noticed that the tablet won't sleep properly while charging. I plug it in, hit the power button to sleep, and it wakes it self as though I plugged a charger in. And so I cycles dimming the screen to sleep and then seconds later like u tap the power button to get the screen to wake. Something s definitely wrong.

I'd the same on my SGP511 yesterday when rooting failed. Just charge for an hour using Sony charger, then press POWER + VOLUME for more than 60 seconds. It vibrates three times and resume from death. Cheers!
It seems like some of these boards may be failing. I think this issue is related to the screen not powering off while charging issue. Users are reporting that Sony is repairing the devices by replacing their main boards. I wonder if there is a known issue with z2 tabs that Sony is aware of.
My z2 tab has both of these problems. I flashed a factory ftf to it and it still had the problem. This is what led me to believe that it was hardware related as it didn't used to do it running cm11 or stock firmware.
I had this happen to me once or twice, though in my case I could recover via power + up/down (can't remember lol) .
In the end my tablet developed other symptoms (namely inability to magnetic charge, and screen stays always on when charged) so i sent it off for repair and they replaced the motherboard.
Hasn't happened since, though I only have had it back for a few weeks. Touch wood.

Yep as in these tablets the flash/CPU/RAM etc. is baked into the mobo so its more or less getting a new tablet internally.
to my shame I updated it without remembering you can only root the older firmware which it did come with ROFL.... oh well the only thing I use root for is adblock
I've just posted my version of events regarding this:

Can't you just use flashtools to downgrade your tablet back to the rootable 4.4.2 firmware?
I managed to downgrade my xperia z2 4g tablet with flashtools application.
Only hiccup was that i accidentally put my tablet in bootloop while i tried to downgrade it, after that i just rooted and installed dual recovery. With that dual recovery i could flash pre rooted 4.4.4 and so i still have my drm keys and ps4 remote play app.

After LCD replacement, only 3 red blinks *solution*

http://i.imgur.com/eYhCtMr.jpg?1There are many people that changed their LCD (Z, Z2 ,Z3) and then were unable to startup the phone.
Of course one might think, is the display broken, did I mess it up myself, etc etc...
Here are the symptoms. If you have the same symptoms, then this will fix your Z2!
- the phone does not boot. Black screen. Will not do anything else then 3 blinks when you press the power on
- without battery, and cable in a charger (not in computer!), will show a battery logo on the LCD
- with battery in the phone and cable in a charger (not in computer!), will make the "Im charging the battery"-light burn red and after a number of seconds (but not always?) a bit dimmed red.
- the phone vibrates if you do the trick with holding the on button and the volume button and keep them pressed (without battery), but nothing more will happen.
- adb does not recognise the phone at all. Fastboot does, but ONLY without battery
- the battery is fully charged, and NOT the problem
- you can flash, unlock the bootloader etc, but only without the battery
- changing the battery with a new one, does not solve the problem.
You have all that? Great..
- open the back of the phone (probably still open )
- take the battery out and concentrate on the part where the battery connector is.
- take a deep breath and keep calm
- solder a very tiny, thin cable from one part to the other (look at the picture).
If the picture is not clear enough, just ask, and I will answer as soon as I can.

Thats all folks! worked for me! I couldnt believe my eyes, but it worked!
All thanks goes to Ahmed Koukou from Egypt who uploaded the solution on another forum, but without any tips and without description.
Registered specially to thank you and to confirm that it worked for me!!!
I bought a new display of Ebay. At first, I thought that it was a bad display, until I read that others had the same problem.
Thank you! My Z2 is alive again :good::good::good::good::good::good:
Hmm interesting,
- the phone does not boot. Black screen. Will not do anything else then 3 blinks when you press the power on
No 3 Blinks just a solid RED LED
- without battery, and cable in a charger (not in computer!), will show a battery logo on the LCD
No battery logo on the LCD just a solid RED LED
- with battery in the phone and cable in a charger (not in computer!), will make the "Im charging the battery"-light burn red and after a number of seconds (but not always?) a bit dimmed red.
Always a bright red led
- the phone vibrates if you do the trick with holding the on button and the volume button and keep them pressed (without battery), but nothing more will happen.
No vibration, even tried the elastic band trick
- adb does not recognise the phone at all. Fastboot does, but ONLY without battery
If only if the PC would recognise something connected. so no adb
- the battery is fully charged, and NOT the problem
- you can flash, unlock the bootloader etc, but only without the battery
- changing the battery with a new one, does not solve the problem.
Thanks i was going to try that
wow this is very similar to this post back 2 years ago

I am going to have a look at mine
Good luck! Hope you will find a way to get the Z2 to work again!
Well i tried this trick and it worked however today after many months the phone just will no longer charge. The battery is in good condition etc but the charge is just too slow to give it enough power.
I cannot work out why it does not charge at full speed any more
My Z2 has been lying dead in a drawer for over a year now. I thought it was gone for good so I thought what the hell it can't get worse than it is so I gave this a try and it ****ing worked!!
I registered just to say Thanks. My Z2 is alive again :good::good:
it works!
It works. thank you so much. I was so attached to my z2 that I bought an original sony screen for replacement. Imagine the deception with these blinking lights. I would like to know why this needs to be done? anyone?
Hello,
after reading your solution I tried to get a very tiny cable for connecting the two points. I didn't have enough patience getting it working.
After trying it without success, I remembered in past, I had to modify AMD CPUs to overclock them. There I used a simple pencil making a line to connect them.
I didn't think long about that, then simply tried it, and had luck with it. My Z2 is now booting again! I'm happy with my solution!
Hope this will help some other people, who also don't have enough patience.

http://i.imgur.com/eYhCtMr.jpg?1There are many people that changed their LCD (Z, Z2 ,Z3) and then were unable to startup the phone.
Of course one might think, is the display broken, did I mess it up myself, etc etc...
Here are the symptoms. If you have the same symptoms, then this will fix your Z2!

Happy that it worked!
I am also happy that I could help others by creating a manual.
Enjoy your reborn Z2

Did you ever find a solution for this? I have your same symptoms...

Million thanks, it worked. I had the phone broken for years and this fixed it. Though it was hard to solder.
Thank you
Just wanted to say thank you for this solution.
I had a similar issue when I put a new battery in it wouldn't turn on. I had the three blinking red lights.
No I have done this it works.
I used Car Window Demister Repair Solution liquid and it work just as well. Got a little puff of smoke but appears to be working okay now.
Again thank you for your help.
you are genius...totally work
Hello everyone. I am also desperate and I came across this solution. I bought the soldering tools however I was unable to do it so I wanted to ask you more about the process. What wire did you use to connect two points? I have 0.8mm soldering wire and it seems to be too fat for this. Also, the guy mention that he did it with pencil. How?
Thanks in advance
It helped me too. Was Xperia Z2, worked well before display replacement, battery at 3,95V, despite of it three red blinks when attempting to start, glowing red while on DC, but not charging (power consumption 0,133A though). Sometimes three vibras when attempting to Power+VolUp while on DC. Black screen only, no logo no nothing.
