How to update from Kenzo running NitrogenOS from April 2018 to some Pie? - Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Questions & Answers

Bought phone in summer 2016, OFFICIALLY unlocked Lollipop (?) bootloader (though not sure if I relocked and unofficially unlocked it since then, most likely not and still using officially unlocked bootloader from 2016, since this was backup phone) with officially supplied MIUI, now years later and many more ROMs I don't remember what's exact state of firmware or bootloader unlock if it's official or unofficial.
I am running this according system:
Nitrogen build kenzo-8.1.0-OPM5.171019.019
android security patch level april 1, 2018
baseband 976_GEN_PACK-1.103654.1.105572.1
kernel 3.10.108 (gcc version 4.9.x 20150123 (prerelease) (GCC) [email protected] #1 Apr 3 2018
SELinux permissive
Redwolf recovery 3.2.1 build 24
What are my options to upgrade to some Pie ROM like Nitrogen or RR? I just remember that at some point Nitrogen OS must switched tree, firmware or something and newer builds end up with bootloops so I am stuck on that April 2018 build. How would I proceed to install some of those Pie ROMs? I guess they require some newer bootloader/firmware. I don't want definitely relock and unlock bootloader and deal with MiFlash, I remember it's major PITA.

U need latest bootloader to boot pie roms.
Lollipop bootloader wont work.
So if u r official unlock then u need firmware to update bootloader.
If u r unofficial unlock then flash latest fastboot rom to update bootloader.

so if i am officially unlocked i could just flash firmware file through TWRP and then flash new Pie ROM without ending relocking bootlader or bricking device?

Yes.
Official unlocking got advantages. U can update ur all critical partitions just by flashing firmware zip in twrp.
If u official unlocked then U can update ur bootloader by flashing 10.2 firmware zip which contains emmc appboot file.
This emmc file will update ur bootloader.
But if u r unofficially unlocked and if u try to attempt to flash same firmware which has emmc appboot file then it will brick or bootloop ur device. It will relock ur bootloader and erase ur twrp.
---------- Post added at 08:29 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:28 AM ----------
So flash latest fastboot rom if u unofficial unlocked.
For kenzo
http://bigota.d.miui.com/V10.2.1.0....XM_20190114.0000.00_6.0_global_8a48e54fe3.tgz
Or if u official unlocked
Then flash this firmware for kenzo using twrp

thanks a lot for help
so if I have officially unlocked Lollipop bootloader, I can still flash new firmware over such old bootloader/firmware? I've found some file in PC, it seem I flashed this firmware most recently - "miui_HMNote3ProGlobal_7.12.21_Firmware" (though not completely sure about it)
So in worst case if I could accidentally flash new firmware over unofficially unlocked bootloader I just need to flash latest fastboot ROM through miflash/fastboot and end up with regular locked bootloader with MIUI and stock recovery? I mean it is not that big deal compared to hard bricking device
will try then just new firmware, hopefully I remember correctly I didn't mess with BL in those years and it is still officially unlocked
btw. can I still flash it with that old red wolf recovery? btw. it's 2GB/16GB configuration if it makes any difference because the recovery file was named "RedWolf-024-kenzo-2GB_RAM" so not sure if there is some difference in recovery between 2GB and 3GB version

so I successfully flash TWRP 3.2.3, no problem to get inside there, then I flashed from there your recommended firmware (seemed successful in TWRP) but then wehn restarted phone won't boot or get into recovery, if i press power button or power button + vol UP, I just see boot logo for half second and then it will switch off, no problem to get into fastboot where I can see the device
so does it mean there was some problem with bootloader and now it is relocked with wiped TWRP and I have to flash that official fastboot ROM?
EDIT: so i guess bootloader is locked and it is back to MIUI via Miflash, right?

So what I did in the end:
1. Installed MiFlash and then through EDL flashed ZCX TWRP from this thread over my relocked old NOS with new firmware

https://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-note-3/development/rom-nitrogen-os-beta-t3864016

Note 3 [SD] came with unlocked Bootloader

Hey all!
I just got my Note 3 (Snapdragon/Kenzo) from DX and it came with global US rom. I checked and its bootloader is already unlocked. I want to update to Miui 8 global dev but I'm worried with this unlock, is there a way to know if it was officialy or unnoficialy unlocked? I want to flash the oficial recovery rom but heard that it can brick the phone if it was unnoficialy unlocked.
link: http://www.dx.com/p/432294
It came with Miui 7.3 Stable (7.3.2.0.0 LHOCNDD)
Please, help. =)

That is a vendor rom.
More than likely it is unofficially unlocked, because your only allow to unlock 1 device per month for each account.
Since your bootloader is unlocked, flash an official rom (which might lock the bootloader again).
Don't flash the latest 6.0.1 rom yet as you might not be able unlock with that.
Then unlock officially.
Check the reddit xiaomi wiki for guides.
Got it! Thanks, for your answer. I realy dont mind unlocking, I just want a miui 8 dev(it has a built in root, right?). I just was afraid of what method of flashing I should use with this unnoficialy unlocked bootloader. I'm going to search this wiki for it.
And better do a Alka TWRP backup now, before anything! Then, if you get your bootloader locked, you can always restore the backup to your current status - ROM and unlocked bootloader. I have two Kenzos in the same situation, and that's the way I do it.
Nice! Will do. Can't I just use that recovery to install an updated rom? There is an annoying bug on this version, I can't open my contact or dialer app, they close befero they appear on screen, tried erasing data but no help.
Boot from TWRP without installing it, make the backup (all partitions), then make sure you get the backup on your PC. After that you can install TWRP and make whatever you wish.
And don't forget, if you need to restore, do it without restoring the firmware partition, or else you'll get an error.
Thansk! But I think I will stick with the global dev. Can I flash it via Fastboot (MiFlash)? This unnoficial unlock wont cause any trouble, right ?
This is not an unofficial unlock. Is isn't either official
My phones came with some vendor MIUI's - 7.4.9.0(LHOCNDD), respectively 7.4.18.0(LHOMIDD), but I never flashed another MIUI, just custom ROMs. For what I know, if you flash via fastboot it will wipe the entire partition structure, including boot and recovery, and the bootloader will get locked. In that case you can not restore the backup you make now. You'll have to apply for official unlocking, or go unofficial.

that means.. you recieved an unboxed device, may be refurbished, repacked and resealed and sold $25 costlier than the original. :silly:
Not necessarily. I have two, buyed from a local big online store, both came with unlocked bootloader. Both boxes were sealed, with no sign of foreign hands
I have 7.3.2.0.0 LHOCNDD rom and unlocked bootloader. Can I just type on fastboot:
fastboot flash recovery recoveryAlkaUpdate.img
to get twrp(alka)?
Thats work!

I have the same MIUI vendor as you, 7.4.9.0(LHOCNDD), what method did you use to install TWRP? I only want to install AOSP/CM based ROM on this device. I want to flash it ASAP cause this MIUI ROM have a Trojan downloader, which luckily can be disabled.
I used Cofface on first phone, Alka on the second. Before flashing, first boot from TWRP image, make backup of all partitions to the SD card, copy the backup on computer, and only after that flash the TWRP image. After that... flash ROMs

Flashing MIUI 8 Global Beta MM from LL

Hi all. My RN3 is currently on global stable MIUI 8.0.6.0 which os LL based. I want to switch over to Global beta which is MM.
I dont want to use MiFlash as I bricked my device twice earlier flashing the MM file.
Can I flash the MM recovery zip through TWRP? Should I use Alka Twrp to flash and do I need to do anything else after that? Can anyone please help me with exact steps to get MM global beta through TWRP?
Go to xiaomi.eu and get a zip that Global MM modified (only remove bloatware I think) and flash it via TWRP.
MiFlash actually rescue me from a soft-brick one week ago. MiFlash shouldn't brick your device if you doing it right.
MiFlash works perfectly with Global Stable, I don't know about Global Dev, but I have a solution if you want a official way to go Global Dev.
I will assume you are not flash any custom recovery yet, and still at stock recovery. And no bootloader unlock needed.
Flash Global Stable via MiFlash and update Global Dev via stock recovery with recovery zip.
I do it once when I go from MIUI 7 Stable to MIUI 8 Beta few months ago, and it works very well.
dev roms should b flashed with custom recovery bro..
I have nothing against MiFlash but my PC USB ports seems to be having a problem when I flash using MiFlash and it stops midway with some read error..I had that problem twice..
So I am always using Alka TWRP for flashing CM 14.1 builds from LL directly. Wanted to check if I can do that with MIUI 8 Global Dev too using their recovery zip file. Heard it causes bootloops. Please detail the steps of flashing through TWRP. Thats the safest for me

When you go from miui lp to miui mm , your bootloader will be relocked and you have to unlock it again and flash twrp.
Actually, TWRP remains, you only need to unlock it with MiUnlock in fastboot mode. And then you can go to twrp or system. Because BL is locked it causes bootloop

After that I m trying to unlock my device, But it's stuck at 50% (Another

So if I unlocked my bootloader by fastboot miflash unofficially method,

What would be the cons if I unlocked unofficially..
You need to boot in EDL mode and then flash with MiFlash china/global dev fastboot ROM. For that you dont need to unlock BL. Then you will be able to unlock it on dev ROM.
I had exact same problem

No you cant upgrade OTA if you have official TWRP.
It only works with ZCX TWRP, I suggest flash zcx, backup all partitions to microSD and then happy flashing.

problem with twrp and oos 3.x.x

hello,
my current situation: i am on oos 2.2.3, not rooted, twrp 3.0.1-0 running.
i want to install a 3.x.x oos, version, i wanted to install 3.1.2 first, cause oneplus site i can install that directly form 2.2.3 (no such info on 3.1.3 and 3.1.4)
when i try to install with twrp, it says "this package is for "Oneplus" devices, this is a "ONE"
i think i am using the wrong twrp version. tried to install the newest (3.0.3-0), but this one doenst work, can not boot into it.
please help
Best is to fastboot flash old OOS 2 recovery
Then, with it, flash the 2.2.3. Reboot. then Flash 3.1.4. with the recovery
First you need to flash official oxygen os recovery for android 5.1 lollipop https://s3.amazonaws.com/oxygenos.oneplus.net/OPX_recovery.img Now you will be able to boot the phone. Now download and copy oxygen os 3.1.4 to internal memory http://downloads.oneplus.net/devices/oneplus-x/ Reboot into recovery and flash the rom.
Aftrr successful flash of oos3 boot into fastboot and flash latest twrp from twrp website.. This time it should work.
thanks, it work with the costum recovery.
on 3.1.4 i installed a slightly older twrp form sparkfire (3.0.2 i think), rooting and installing xposed worked fine though.
is it important to have the latest twrp?
and another question. at some point in my hours long struggel with updating my opx i softbricked it. i guess my bootloader was locked and i tried to install another recovery. i expected it to be still unlocked from my first rooting months ago. when does the bootloader lock?

It is always recommended to use latest (bugs free)
You can use this one https://dl.twrp.me/onyx/twrp-3.0.3-0-onyx.img latest as of now. And no u didn't brick ur phone. U flashed a new twrp for old bootloader version. Thts y u got stuck with oneplus logo. Its all oneplus things. Its always preferred to use stock recovery for updating bootloader which is safe. Unlocked unofficial , now permission granted to unlock official - what to do ?

I have Redmi Note 3 SD. I applied for official unlock while phone was on MIUI stable 8.0.6.0 (Lollipop) , but I did not wait for permission and I unlocked unofficial and I upgraded to MIUI stable 8.1.1.0 (Marshmallow). Safe TWRP is installed and phone is rooted .
What to do now ? Should I continue with official unlock ? Could it be done if phone is already unlocked (unofficial) ?
Does it change anything significant ? I think I would prefer to be officially unlocked , so the bootloader doesn't ever lock again , but I am not sure if I can or if I should proceed from actual state .
Thanks
PS - Just checked Mi Unlock status in settings and it says - This device is locked !!! . But in Fastboot says bootloader unlock : true !!!
I'm in the same position, and I've sometimes considered unlocking officially. But, for the most part, I am happy with my unofficial unlock and worried that the official process will not work immediately, so I haven't bothered to officially unlock yet.
This would be the proper procedure for doing so, I believe.
1. Take a full backup in TWRP and be sure to copy it to a PC or somewhere separate from the phone. Also copy any important files from internal storage to a PC or some external storage.
2. Flash the latest China development rom using Miflash. (This would relock your phone).
3. Boot and log in with your Mi Account. Check in with "find my phone" to make sure Xiaomi knows you are logged in on your phone with your account.
4. Unlock via the official method using the Mi Unlock Tool... and pray that it doesn't get stuck at 50%. (If it does. Do "find my phone again" and try again later... and again later... etc. Sometimes it reportedly takes days. This is why I haven't bothered to do this yet.)
5. After officially unlocking, you could theoretically restore your TWRP backup (probably avoid restoring any weird partitions other than system and data in case it screws up your bootloader).

I followed this guide - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PtoeZg6K-z4&feature=youtu.be
Update - I tried unlocking official without flashing dev rom and relocking the phone - of course it didn't work because MiFlash could see the bootloader already unlocked . I will not bother anymore to unlock official if actual state of phone is safe for further custom roms .
Just to make sure - can someone advise if I can flash xiaomi.eu roms from Safe TWRP without worries ? Do I need to flash Universal boot img patcher too after I flash rom ?

I went through same path. Now on LAOS 14.1 . You can flash .. but do take backup of all partitions. Also do try to find what your FP sensor is. You may end up in issue like this https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3543397
Scroll though my other posts for more info.
The problem with Settings crashing , I solved by flashing Radon kernel - also FP is working with this kernel .
It looks like this Redmi Note 3 is much more prone to brick than Redmi 3 I used before. I went through quite a few bricks and failed flashes while unlocking and upgrading to Marshmallow .
With Redmi 3 , which I bought unlocked from Greece , I never had a single problem flashing custom roms - never used fastboot, edl , myflash , just TWRP .
So - no need to flash universal boot img patcher or anything else after flashing custom rom ?

Most guides say that you need the latest dev rom in order to unlock.
If you want to try with merely re-locked bootloader on your current rom, I believe maybe you can re-lock in fastboot?
"fastboot oem lock"
?

Now device is unlocked. [ Flash Dev Rom only ]
I would like to know which Twrp to use , now I need to get back to Miui official global stable with custom recovery [ need OTA , Incremental updates ] & also if I flash radon kernel will I receive Incremental updates?
ZCX Twrp is recommended?

Make sure u come from latest miui 10 stable
If u unlocked boot loader unofficially and zcx
then first replace ur zcx twrp with latest twrp. Then u can flash custom roms and gapps.
U dont need any firmware Before flashing custom roms.
Just format data
Wipe data reset
Flash rom and gapps.
Reboot.
If u try to flash those 50mb size miui firmware zip using twrp then u will brick ur phone coz u r unofficially unlocked. So get rid of that firmware fever from ur head. U dont need any.
In case if u feel like going again back to miui global rom then put ur phone in EDL mode and flash kate fastboot global rom using computer and miflashtool.

Better use official TWRP, Orangefox or Redwolf recovery
No need to flash firmware as you're already on MIUI 10.2
Just wipe system, data, also format data & proceed to flash the rom
Thanks for the help guys

Can you help me? This is for Kenzo
I had softbricked? my phone. Went through the process of installing the MIUI 10 fastboot rom but it required activation which I can't do as I forgot my login details (i bought this phone years ago)
Yesterday I managed to unlock unofficially using this method
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=66379587&postcount=3
Didn't install 7.1.8, just 7.2.5, followed the instructions, was able to enable oem-unlock and usb debugging, confirmed bootloader was unlocked
Flashed the latest twrp, tried zwcx, lastly tried the latest orangefox
Tried flashing AOSPextended nougat and viper os nougat with various recoveries but they were stuck at the logo for the corresponding roms
I am not sure...do I have to do anything with that boot.img patcher? And if so, when would I flash it?
Went through the same steps again. Same result. All roms get stuck on the custom boot animation
edit:nevermind, flashed that unlocked bootloader rn3_unlockonly in miflash and it booted up

There is an updated guide to unlock unofficially on MIUI 9 with new bootloader.
The problem was you unlocked on older version of MIUI.
To recover password try to visit mi cloud & check if you can do something or forget & use custom roms as there's nothing good about MIUI.

Ah, yes I didn't know that the process was different now. I was just trying to do the Mi Unlock thing in order to flash these custom roms, not gonna use MIUI.
