Gmail can't DL attachment on mobile data (but OK on VPN or Wifi!) - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've had this problem for many months on my Samsung S7 (it suddenly appeared). Now that I've bought an S10e I'm very displeased to have the same exact problem again. I didn't transfer anything from the S7 (knowingly. Perhaps some Google/Samsung auto-restoration of settings without my knowledge). The S10e was installed from scratch AFAIK.
Problem:
On the Gmail app downloading attachments on WiFi works fine. On mobile data it never works. It does nothing at all. Hitting preview continuously shows a 0% progress bar.
All other things work without issue on mobile data: Sending and receiving mail, browsing, navigation, YouTube, etc. is normal. Only Gmail attachments don't download...
I don't have adblockers or antivirus. Everything is updated. Gmail isn't on the background data restriction, nor do I use that function.
I tried the private DNS function, that didn't help either. Clearing the app cache and app data didn't help either.
+ VPN.
I spent some hours testing, and most of the time with an active OpenVPN tunnel (all traffic redirect through tunnel) to my home or to my office it works! The moment I disconnect the VPN, it stops working.
(Seems also to work on a LT2P Ipsec tunnel).
Some kind of DNS issues?
I have an older Motorola and an older Sony phone which don't show this problem, so it's not stemming from my Gmail account or my provider.
What can I try to fix this problem?

[Q] Qustion for Networking experts

Hi
I am trying to connect to my office wifi via proxy server.
Scenario 1: I am using Samsung Bada (wave 1), connected to the internet successfully and also any applications that require an internet connection including Samsung's app store.
While, connecting via open networks like home wifi and other friends' wifi also worked without any issue.
Scenario 2: Now I also have an android based Galaxy pocket: even after entering all the required proxy setting as mentioned above, I can access websites via browser but cannot access samsung's app store, google's play store, skype, sipdroid etc.,
I know it is nothing to do with the network administration as I am still accessing via my samsung wave but not via android. Please help me in identifying what I am missing. Is there anything like a network profile I need to assign for these applications?
thanks
S
Figured out the solution
Sometimes it is pathetic to notice that I didn't receive a single suggestion after I posted my question above. This is not how it used to be when we had smartphones that were just running windows long time ago.
There were lot of suggestions that comes up within a few minutes of posting, now after the invent of android and so many devices we have so many members but knowledge sharing has decreased considerably as each person is busy with solving their own issues.
Well, let me come back to the point - All that I needed to do was to run an app like 'proxydroid' or 'auto proxy lite' from one of our members from xda-developers to solve this issue. In order, to run these apps the device needed to be rooted. I rooted and installed this app and from that instance I am able to make all my apps including skype, google app market and what not all can access internet from my corporate wifi.
However, I noticed that only one application never succeeded this trick - that app is a Voip/SIP application called 'Pronto dialer' which throws a message 'unknown error occurred'. It works fine in an open wifi like at home etc., I am suspecting the proxy setting in the office network clashes with the proxy setting in the dialer...dont know what it is. Anyway I am glad and relieved that I was able to solve 90% of the issue.
Hope the above will be useful for someone with similar limitation from corporate wifi.

No Account Sync + WiFi Failure

Until 2-3 days ago, both my Google account sync on my phone and WiFi connectivity worked. However, both of these have now failed. I am not sure they are linked, but I assume they are considering the problems surfaced at a similar time.
1) Gmail doesn't work - the app opens, but does not download or send emails. No error message appears, it just does nothing. I press refresh to no avail. Going onto the Play Store and again encountering account sync failure made me realise it was an account wide and phone problem and not just Gmail.
2) Whilst my data connection works (and therefore the above account sync problem is not one of connectivity), the WiFi connection that worked up until 2 days ago does not work anymore. It is a hotel network, but rather than redirect me to a login page it sends me to a single page (not the login page) and does not allow any other sites. The problem is most probably down to my phone as the WiFi network and login works fine on my PC and for everyone else in the hotel.
Any ideas as to how to resolve this?
Thanks

Clear data from Google framework services..delete your google account..reboot ..add your Google account again..and do this on your data network..coz for WiFi you need to contact the admin of your hotel..

Email client not syncing over 3G, only works over wifi.

Hi,
I search over the forum but didn't find the answer to my question.
I'm the happy owner of a GS3 stock rom, not rooted, fresh out of the box.
It works verry well. I'm impressed by the device itself but I struggle with a problem.
My exchange account won't syncronize over 3G. Every few minutes, I get a message saying "unable to connect to [my account]"
gmail client works just fine but I have two email addresses (pro and home).
This is not a connectivity issue as other apps works great aover 3G and this is not a network limitation as I can connect thru other wifi networks.
I can do all necessary test and I had a look in all settings I can find without any succes until now.
I had 3 FW update since I own the device, each time I hope it will solve my probelm...
Thanks for your help.
Best regards from Belgium,
JC
Did you checked out if in Settings _Data Usage- not added to exceptions to sync only over WiFI ?

Thanks for your answer.
I checked and I can find any exceptions (I can't find the options, to be clear). Under the Data Usage, I have mobile data and Wifi pages but I don't find any way to manage exceptions.
There is a similar issue with the hotmail app - SSL auth error on 3G - Fine on Wi-Fi
The way to resolve that issue is to uninstall the app - remove any accounts associated to it (the hotmail sync account removed authomatically) reboot the phone - then set everything back up BUT DO SO ON 3G and not Wi-Fi!!! For some strange reason this sorts out the issue and can then connect on both 3G and Wi-Fi.
This is obviously specific to the hotmail app - but as this is also email it may also resolve your issue - Worth a shot at least. .Good Luck

How can I uninstall the stock email app? I will try to clear my account but not uninstall the app and see if it solves my problem. I will try it tonight when I will be back in my country and not in roamuing anymore.
Thanks
I don't use the stock app at all - I guess you can remove the associated accounts under settings/accounts then go to app manager and clear cache and data.
My issue was due to a self signing certificate or something - guess that a hidden setting somewhere changes when you accept but wasn't working correctly when setting up accounts over Wi-Fi.
Hope it works for you. You not the option to get a specific mail provide app from the playstore? - Could be another option
I will let you know
I'm quite happy with the stock mail app for now. If I can solve my problem by reseting my account over 3G, I will keep it.

I resolved this issue by:
- deleting the Exchange Active Sync eMail Account I set up over WiFi (Email->Settings->Delete Account);
- created an EAS Account over 3G, selected "Accept every SSL Certificate" (Email->Settings->Add Account).
It seems that creating an EAS Account over WiFi prevents the same account to access the server over 3G/EDGE/... connection.
Tried on Sony Xperia Tablet Z SGP321, default mail app, with Android 4.2.2.

Problem solved!
Hi,
I have also an Galaxy S5 Android and sinds we have Exchange 2010, it does not synchronize any more. If I put my phone on SAVE MODE, it doesn't work. If I DISABLE the SAVE MODE it works.
Go to Setting => Power saving => put Power saving mode OFF
good luck.

[Q] weird wifi issues with android! (play store & whatsapp)

right, this one is a weird one, and i just cant figure it out!
i have 2 android devices at home; a Nexus One and a HTC One S. both exhibit the same issue
in short, when I'm connected to wifi at home, i'm unable to use Google Play or send pictures in whatsapp. gPlay says no network or network timeout when opening the Play app, and whatsapp will just sit there trying to send a photo (the little grey clock icon).
when i'm on any other wifi network; home, friends or parents house, or use the vodafone (UK) network they both work.
to make it weirder, i can push install apps via the Play Store via a PC browser when i'm on wifi, i just cant use the Play app on the phone.
so, it seems like something specific to my ISP/home network right?
so far, this is what i've done to try and fix the issue...and the outcome (works = apps function as expected. fails = i continue to experience issues):
- enable Internet Passthrough via USB cable on the phone (uses laptop network connection). this works. Eliminates router issues?
- configure infrastructure wifi with windows7 Internet Connection Sharing and connect phone to this new wifi network. this fails.
- tried another AP from work (Cisco 1130AG - we use these at work where i am able to sucessfully connect). This fails. Eliminates potential wifi chipset compatibility issues?
- full wipe of HOS phone. this fails.
- used google to find many reports of similar issues, but seem to be the opposite of me; they sugest wifi as a solution, with broken APN settings, or to clear cache of the 'google play store' app on the device experiencing issues.
- opened firewall ports on router (TCP/UDP 5228 according to the google play FAQ), also stuck phone in DMZ. this fails
- firmware and full factory reset on router. fails.
it's been going on for so long that i cant remember when it started (a number of months). i've changed ROMs on my HOS phone and that has no effect either. i dont recall having issues relating to anything specific; one day it just started happening and not worked since.
have i missed anything, and can anyone think of any more ideas? is this something i'm just going to have to live with? does google have any human contact support method for this?

Networking issue; anything to check before factory reset?

I'm having a strange issue and wondering if anyone has experienced something similar.. I can access most of the internet (web sites, podcast download, etc), over WiFi and cell data but some things like my imap email seem to get "stuck" (eg, my email client says "socket timeout"). I've learned that if I switch networks, from WiFi to cell or vice verse, the connectivity seems to start working again, but eventually hangs up again. This is happening on both a OnePlus One running Android 2.x and an Asus tablet running 4.4. They both seemed to present this issue around the same time, but a few things changed around the same time that I remember;
1 I installed the WeChat app
2 The WiFi router I connect to most often changed
I uninstalled WeChat but the problem persists.
I want to blame the WeChat app as installing something surreptitious to spy on my network traffic.
Is there any way to see why my network connection is getting "stuck"? Or do I just need to do a factory reset? I'd just hate to go through all the effort of a factory reset just to find I have the same issue.
