Unlock and Root of Kindle HDX 3rd Gen with Fire OS 4.5.5.3 - Kindle Fire HDX 7" & 8.9" Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

Hey Guys,
I have tried to my knowledge over the past year every now and then, whenever I came across a new method/guide, to unlock and root my device. I want the f-ing Google Play Store on my Kindle too.
I come from the Previous Version to 4.5.5.3 and it seemed there was never an actually working Unlocking/Rooting Method available.. of maybe I have simply not found them.
Now after it had updated to 4.5.5.3 I have new hope that there will be a new Method available to unlock everything.
Do you guys have somewhere found a Guide that will give me the Informations I need? This little HDX is just plain awesome, even now after this long time. Everything that I could get running by sideloading runs butter smooth... but there is so much that I am missing. So I would love to have my device after such a long time at last unlocked and able to access the full Play Store.
Help is really appreciated.
Kind Regards

Full bootloader unlock and ROM replacement for any 3rd gen HDX regardless of FireOS level has been available for 2 years. Any FireOS v4.5.x build can be rooted via KingRoot. Achieving a stable Play Services/Store install on FireOS v4 is another matter.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/kindle-fire-hdx/general/multi-platform-1-click-bootloader-t3241014

God damnit... why.. oh why... I truly was looking over and over again and whatever I did, I never got that damn device to get unlocked....
Well, I till actually try this right now.... once the Power is charged again that is..
Thanks!

Looking for this tool, I have MacOS Catalina. Will be sending a PM.

[Q] Hisense Sero 7 Pro stock kernel?

Hello, I flashed the XE-SeroROM and kernel from the dev thread and would like to revert to stock. I see the stock firmware available but does anyone know where I can locate the stock kernel as well? Any help is greatly appreciated.
EDIT: In addition, does anyone know how I might restore functionality to vudu? A good addition to the first post in that dev thread would be a warning that it kills vudu and even reverting to stock doesn't fix it.
I took the Boot.img provided and inserted it into the kerneltest.zip and it seems to have worked. The OTA update is almost working now. Seems to fail at "set_perm" status 7. ??
RE:
Still no joy. I managed to get back to stock recovery, stock kernel, stock OS (is this really stock?), and even mostly apply the update thus breaking wifi so...restore everything stock and no vudu. It seems once you root flash recovery then vudu is a lost cause for good? Is it requiring a secure key in the original rom that gets lost when flashing maybe? I guess since I'm in the window, I'm going to just return it and grab another.

Yeah I ran into the same problem trying to install the update...got an error and my wifi quit working. So I reinstalled the stock ROM. Once we have ten posts we can ask in the forum. Other than that I love this tablet. I am sure someone will make a ROM with the update included. Remember the sero 7 is new and I am confident the best is yet to come for it. You might want to hang onto it.

I just exchanged it for another one. I think there is a security feature in it the same as with some other embedded devices that won't allow it to become "stock" once again after you flash a custom rom. It should have been able to install the update fully and use vudu if it had truly been returned to original condition. I hope they consider posting a warning about that in the first post. I know Vudu doesn't matter to a lot of people but it is a pretty important feature to me and I like to be able to keep up with OTA updates if they have relevance to device specific drivers or whatever. The custom rom was cool though...I can't believe how much has been accomplished with it in a short time.
Sent from my M470BSA using xda app-developers app I too have not been able to update. I went back to stock but still the update failed.I wish someone would incorporate the update into a new ROM.I didn't know that I could not return to true stock or I wouldn't have installed the ROM. I've lost some of the stock apps too like the remote. But I still think the devs have done and amazing job for this early in this tablet release.

You are right about the warning. All I did was root mine and installed cwm..I did not install the custom ROM. I am sure they will find a work around for the update. I hope so cause i am just outside the 15 days.I don't use vudu but I understand. I know I could buy a new one and return this one but this one is perfect so i am gonna keep it. So we wait and see what happens next with Dev...lol

Yup..I know how you feel. I am going to hang in there and keep mine. The fact that so much has been done since release is a good indicator of much more to come. It will be interesting to see what the next rom will be.

I suppose karma bit me on the ass. I exchanged mine in perfect physical condition to get one with a stuck pixel and a spot near the bottom that looks like some kind of screen fault. Should have left well enough alone...I would rather do without vudu than have this. The update seems substantial though.

1. why vudu? you have an entire android market.
2. xboxexpert provides an executable to go back to bone stock. just run from within windows.
3. you should learn to do it thru fastboot
4. i have a device tree and booting cm 10.1 but the mods wont let me post in dev forums or include links for another 7 post, damn nazis

If you were so smart, u should of figured, how ridiculously easy it is to make ten MEANINGFUL posts. Stop the whining, deal with it, and make those ten, THE RIGHT WAY!
RE:
Vudu because it supports ultraviolet and contains much of my already owned content which I do not wish to purchase again. In general I prefer the service to google play video because it is on my Bluray players as well allowing me to easily view the same shared content on multiple locations. The "revert to stock" option does not fix the vudu app or the OTA updates either. Don't know about fastboot yet so no comment there.

Sorry that happened to you. Maybe take it back and get another one? I would think the update does more than just patch a security hole. I mean it 50megs. It's a shame Hisense doesn't post revisions.

It puts the device back to what appears to be bone stock. But the update still does not install for me and yes I have tried everything. Have you tried installing the update after just doing a root and CWM and reverting back to the "stock rom"?
xboxexpert has a new version of his root and custom UI for the Sero 7 pro posted for the new build that came out.

I have not had problems with Vudu, even after rooting my Sero 7 Pro, playing with XERom, and restoring it back to stock (but rooted). There are two differences that may be involved.
I only played with Vudu after restoring it to stock. I never ran it before.
I did a backup of my stock ROM and installed software immediate after installing CWM, and I used that to restore everything. (It's nice having 32GB of SD Card to backup to.)

Weird, I still have my Vudu and remote apps after rooting & cwm on my sero7 pro. But then again, I just did the root 3 weeks ago so maybe the root file from the xbox Dev post has been modified/amended/fixed to fix that issue since the version you used back when you did yours. Either way.. I'm sorry that has happened to you, I also like my Vudu My problem now is waiting for them to release something to help us trick our devices into switching our internal storage path with our external/SD paths so we can actually USE our SD cards like intended>>for storing apps!.. spent all that damn money on a 32gb card cause I knew I was gonna be an app hog, only to turn out that all I can use it for is storing photos, video, docs and music..but no apps!?!! Ridic.. Grrr!

I use an app called "FolderMount" for linking my apps to the SD. So far, haven't had any issues with it - I've been able to move almost all of my resource hogging games to the SD without a hitch...

Stock ROM my ass.
Lots of stuff ends up not working or missing.
He could just like at least let people know he fuxored up the so called "stock" ROM he posted.
Why vudu? ...because I had an account already.
anyway it is hilarious how this is such a respected site and so many things are joke on here and don't work correctly.
Anyway we all knew the risks going in so w/e.
Ditto..so I'm not the only one?!

Yeah, I'm having the SAAAME exact issues... about the first 3 weeks after rooting with that rom everything was allll good and great..... NOW, I have to shut down and reboot about 5-8 times A DAY!.. 'Launcher' stops working, and EVERY-DAMN-TIME my tablet goes to sleep/screen off for more than about 30-40 mins..it just crashes and you have to force it to shut down and reboot.. Rooting was soooo not worth it, I never even really ended up using any "root required" features or apps anyways, besides folder mount (stopped functioning), and GameKiller. And now I'm fizznucked cause even know my sero7p is only 2 MONTHS old/new and I bought the 2 year replacement plan..rooting voided that So yeah, I'm RIGHT there with u, stuck with what used to be a kick ass functioning tablet, that is now just a nuisance and is gonna end up being yet another dusty R.I.P. electronic stuck in a drawer somewhere..when will I learn?! lol. Best of luck..

What I did was flash the first stock ROM in the list and then tell cwm no when it asks if I want to stop the ROM from flashing the stock recovery and then no again when it asks about root and it's all back to normal now

[Q] Amazon APP store non functional

Its been a while since i have messed with my hdx.
I have an 8.9 and had previously rooted and got google play working. I have been using this for about 9 months now, and have been quite happy with it, except for one thing, i cant get amazon app store to work, which isnt a BIG deal, but it would be nice to use all the features.
I am running the hdx 8.9 rooted, running safestrap and am on 14.3.1.0 I believe i used this method to get google play working. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=48667577&postcount=1
I have been a little gun shy to further probe the amazon dragon as i know alot of people have been getting burnt by playing around with root. But i have run into some issues i am now wanting to either factory reset, or, preferably get things working with root.
I have a few questions...
1) am i missing anything with the current version I have to the what everyone is currently running root on?
2) Is there anyway to get both Google play and Amazon app working in tandem?
Thanks
I literally just installed GP on my HDX 7" minutes ago, rebooted and both stores seem to work fine. Can you describe your problem a little more?

[Q] Fire HDX 7 - Is it safer to flash Roms and Root now?

First, I apologize if this ins't the right area but it seems like a General question.
I recently bought a Kindle Fire HDX 7" and have had it about a week now. With all the Amazon Bloat and lack of Google apps I need more out of it. I am not a beginner with flashing roms and such, my HTC One is Rooted, CyanogenModed, and has a boot loader, anyways...
I have spent the last couple days reading up on the ways to do it on the HDX 7 and heard many warnings and bricks of this device, but some of the posts are a little bit older. I can't really tell which method of Rooting/Flashing is the safest out of all the different ones. My current OS version is 13.3.2.1. Using the Safestrap looks pretty easy and from what I understand is that even if you do brick it you can recover the original?
My question is... Is it any safer to flash a Rom lately (due to the updating problems?), and how safe is just rooting it for the time being? Also, what method/tools would you suggest to use? I don't like the FireOS and would like to get it close the a standard Android and/or CyanogenMod.
Thanks for your time.
well

actually you came just in time and have the right firmware and place go to the development section and start reading we now have a brand new recovery that bypasses the security on our bootloader. I would advise reading reading these threads thoroughly. And your particular software is rootable with the existing utilities we have in the development section also. There has been a lot of development very recent keep in mind they are first version may be buggy but the utility .94 can get you rooted and safe from updates until you can do more research. And get your new recovery in place.
Thanks, by what you said I am guessing the internal workings haven't been figured out quite yet. I will head over to the development boards and see if I can find. Sadly I updated to FireOS 4.5 not knowing that there wasn't software to to roll back for versions above 1X but read that I can call Amazon and have it rolled back so no worries.
nope

I actually just got it rolled back, I read that people saying it doesn't happen anymore, but the very nice tech lady down graded me from 4.5.1 to 13.3.2.7. She stayed on the phone until it was completly reset. =) Now I should be able to root it easily with towelroot.
I was being pretty damn charming to her though, lol
I'm sure they don't want to and won't do it most of the time, but I is still 100% possible on their end, it's just wether they want to or not. I had a pretty decent story too, not just 'its slow and buggy'

after rolling back a couple of them it helps if you say that it was on version 3 then you updated to the latest one then make up some plausable combination of symptoms for example the one i went with is that my device restarts alone every 20 minutes or so and almost no apps work and then proceed to say that you were happy with how it was before it was updated
EDIT:also to note that i have yet to have them refuse me a single time through chat
well

I have just been reading about several people that have been rejected and why. There is a rumor that they gave it to their developers only and their technicians will go through your device logs and decide whether or not it is appropriate. Again rumor. I do not need roll back at least so far I have stuck with the old software all year...I just hate having to mess with trying to keep the OTA blocked. I just want them to take me off the ota push servers.

HDX stuck at "Fire is upgrading" - it started update before I got root

My Apollo is stuck trying to upgrade itself.
Background
Previously I did have Safestrap 3.75 and was running Nexus 1.0.1 is in a slot. I had 14.3.2.8 sitting in the Stock Rom slot.
Decided to upgrade to Nexus 4.0.5 so I went back to the stock slot and uninstalled safestrap 3.75.
Saw in the Safestrap 4.0.1 thread that I needed to be on 14.4.5.2 for it to work, so I manually forced upgrade to that version.
Then while I was attempting to get root back (quickly allowing wifi access for it to work) the damn machine downloaded a newer version of stock and tried to install it.
Well I thought "fine I will let it upgrade and then roll back to 14.3.2.8 and start again"
Wrong!. The HDX rebooted and then when it restarted it is now stuck at "Fire is upgrading..." and "Starting applications..." (shortly after the second orange Kindle Fire boot logo)
Now I cant access by adb because the unit is "unauthorized".
Any hope of getting it back online? Its been stuck at boot for a day now. Any hope of a way to bypass the upgrade during the boot phase?
Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately, not much you can do without adb access. As a long shot try a factory reset from the native Kindle Fire recovery menu. Often this makes things worse but you have little to loose given the symptoms and age of device (likely long out of warranty).

On the phone with Amazon right now. They also suggested Factory Reset. I know it cant get worse because I already have no root. So I gave it a go. Just bootloops now - still trying to upgrade itself.
They want me to replace it with a refurb at my cost.
Thanks for nothing Amazon. I was on stock when this happened and it was your update that screwed me! LOL Probably get a Samsung or Nexus to replace. It was fun while it lasted though.

What you experienced is not uncommon based comments posted in XDA forums and Amazon customer reviews. OTAs are never 100% reliable but HDX devices seem to be more vulnerable to soft bricks with limited/no recovery options. Obviously the vast majority of users upgrade without incident but even a low single digit failure rate during the expected lifespan of the device raises a red flag. Amazon's replacement policy is also consistent: once out of warranty they will offer a refurb at current prices occasionally muted with a modest discount (eg: $20 USD off). BFD.
HDX is a great hunk of hardware if you can tame it. Nexus and Samsung tablets are a notch below imo but are much easier to mod. Sorry for your loss; good luck with whatever direction you opt to go.

Hi Davey, thanks for the thoughts. Its the truth that after 2 years this specs on the 3rd gen HDX are still right up there. The image quality and sound quality are outstanding compared to just about anything available - even today. But unfortunately if you like to tinker then its just too much work. Samsung and other manufacturers are heading down the same path with locked bootloaders but even so modding seems a dream compared to the HDX.
Probably going to get a tablet that utilizes a stylus since I really want to use it as a digital notepad for work and a movie player for leisure. My regular kindle e-reader is still the best option for reading books due to very light weight. As good as the HDX is (and any tablet for that matter), tablets are still a bit to heavy for serious reading in bed and the back light disturbs your sleep patterns.
If anyone else reading this has a viable option to get the unit to reboot without upgrading I am all ears, because as I have said I would love to get a bit more life out of this fantastic HDX hardware.

Take a peek at this thread for ideas. Long shot at best. The small glimmer of hope is you made it past the grey logo so dealing with a soft vs hard brick. That said, if USB debug wasn't enabled on 4.5.2 you will be hard pressed to secure meaningful access. Sorry this happened. Might look at grabbing a HDX from an auction site. You are wiser now and would likely make it through the rollback/upgrade procedure intact.

Unfortunately, no solution if you can't connect via ADB. Tough loss ...

I Need Help With A Couple Things For An HDX 7"...Please!!! :)

I have 2 HDX 7". One of them shows a black screen and won't boot. When plugged into my computer (Windows 10 64-bit) it comes up under my Device Manager as Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed). I have tried installing the drivers and everything and anything with this one. I am not having a single solitary luck on getting it to do anything. I have read and read and read until I think my brain will explode! Does ANYONE have any suggestions on what I could do to restore this HDX please, I am getting desperate here.
My other Kindle HDX 7" is a 32GB currently running AOSPExtended. I want to get it back to the Kindle HDX 7" original stock FireOS firmware. Anyone tell me how to go about doing that PLEASE? Again I have read and just haven't found more than people saying keep it the way it is. Problem is I want to sell it and found someone to sell it but they want FireOS on it not Android.
Please ANYONE, I am really needing some help here. Don't mean to sound desperate but I am getting that way. Thanks!

- Unresponsive device may be recoverable but it will take a lot of trial/failure going through the various approaches/solutions mentioned in other unbrick threads. There is no universal 'fix' for these fussy devices when they go belly up. Your only hope is coaxing it into "bulk mode" which is tough w/o a USB connection. I'd set it aside (or sell it) for spare parts should something happen to your primary.
- Restoring FireOS v4 along with essential companion environments (recovery, bootloader) is a rough ride that should not be attempted by the inexperienced. Good chance you'll brick the little fella or end up with a FrankenKindle that does noting well. Convince the buyer AEX (or any of the Nougat based ROMs) is a much better option. Not being a nerd here; I generally prefer/run the stock ROM on all my handheld gizmo's. Amazon devices are the notable exception with 3rd gen HDX being especially hard to restore once unlocked/rooted.

I get that recovering a bricked HDX is not going to be easy. I have read so much I am on overload. I am a mother of 5 kids (one of them is 3 years old) and I have spent every little extra minute (which has been hard I'll admit) reading as much as I possibly can for the last several weeks. I am not totally stupid when it comes to doing things with a computer and I don't mind trying things over and over again. I am trying to get it fixed for my kids to have something to play with.
I am just hoping SOMEONE can just help me out in what specifically to try or suggestions or where to start. Someone that has had the same problems I've got. [emoji39] I would be so very eternally grateful. Again I know it isn't easy I already knew that and don't need to be told that again and again.
I have always enjoyed xda and all the help I've ever gotten on all my devices so hopefully someone can help me out with this one.
Thanks all.

The brickled kindle just stopped working alone? noone try to do something weird or install some strange app?
If the answer its yes, probably its a hardware issue, there nothing to do with physical hardware to make a diagnostic.
For the other case, you can install a FireOS modded version to run with TWRP

I hope someone could upload 4.5.5.3, 4.5.5 had some bugs, the keyboard type speed becomes so slow at the end of the day,you need reboot the tablet every day to recover the smoothness of the keyboard, sometimes i got some reboots (4-5 since i installed it), this never happened on lastest version.

The bricked kindle I am not sure on. I got it from a friend of mine who said all she did was an update and then it just wouldn't boot anymore. I have heard that sometimes Amazon updates have bricked some...I am going to see about taking it apart to make sure everything is plugged in and what not.
As for the FireOS where can I find 4.5.5.3 do you know? I would love it for both the 8.9 and 7" HDX. Thanks so much for all your help I am forever grateful. :good:

Check this thread for FireOS TWRP Flashable Images, you can flash it like other rom's with twrp , you dont worry for OTA updates because its disabled
https://forum.xda-developers.com/kindle-fire-hdx/development/twrp-flashable-stock-images-t3194914
unfortunately the only image available is 4.5.5 ,almost the same as 4.5.5.3 but in my experience , had some minor bugs
For the bricked kindle, its almost impossible to recover without ADB access a.k.a USB Conectivity for run some programs to get access to the file system and procede to repair it (not apply in all cases), sadly Amazon Fire's isnt user friendly for homemade repairs, best choice is replace the motherboard or get another one.
I dont know if amazon keep provide support for our old fire hdx's, in the case she wanna repair( paying for it), ,probably not.
