TWRP asking for password to decrypt data partition - Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite Questions & Answers

My Mi 8 Lite had stock, rooted (Magisk) MIUI Oreo and I dirty flashed MIUI Pie with TWRP 3.2.3. It booted up again with no problems and everything works but when I boot into recovery it now asks for a password to decrypt the data partition. Needless to say, the PIN for unlocking the screen is not accepted by TWRP. I'm hoping I won't need to wipe the data partition to fix this. Any ideas?
Thanks

<bump> anyone?

If you are using the wzsx150 TWRP, notice that versions 1003/1203 are for Oreo only. You need to upgrade to versions 0121, 0212 or 0330 for Pie.

Thanks a million, that fixed the problem. This information should be made available on the existing TWRP posts. I had a job finding the updated recoveries to download but came across a Google Drive folder that someone had posted https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1780TJvn-ZHPBtgDdNjrN8i9YRlqPy38v - I went with the 0330 version which seems to be working fine.

I had the same problem (TWRP asking for password to decrypt data partition) and I have the 1003 version. So I am going to flash 0121, 0212 or 0330. Which do you recommend?

0330

This device has 3 different touchscreen panels (that I know of) and one of them is not fully supported. Which seems to be the one you have. To fix the problem the recovery needs some additions on source and then compiled. I suggest connecting to a pc and copying what you need off the internal storage and then use a recovery that your touchscreen works with and format the data partition using the option that asks you to type yes. This will remove encryption and allow you to access data no matter what recovery you use.

Maybe it's a stupid question bud wat is soue8and ?

My arthritis is bad today and it causes some issues with phone keyboard. It should say "source and". I went back and corrected it.

If you are not encrypted, flash OrangeFox recovery using the adb/fastboot method.

I tried to flash this TWRP several times : TWRP-3.2.3-1003-XIAOMI8LITE-CN-wzsx150.img
but asks me for the password to decrypt the partition
later I read this trhead and tried to flash 0330 but now it returns the following error: Sending 'recovery' (63448 KB) FAILED (Write to device failed (Invalid argument))
What is the problem ?
Thank you

Do you have root access in rom? If so you can flash rhe recovery image with an app called flashify. You can use the free version from playstore.

I have a few questions re TWRP:
1.
Are there different versions available for the X720? If yes, which ones (including download link)?
I believe that I have installed this one ( https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=529152257862668751 ) which seems to differ from this one: http://www.needrom.com/download/twrp-leeco-le-pro-3/
2.
How are the partitions organized on the Le Pro 3? See also http://forum.xda-developers.com/le-pro3/development/ref-lex720-64gb-partition-infos-t3493528
What is the difference between system and systemimage (as shown in TWRP)?
3.
Does the Le Pro 3 TWRP port still have any bugs?
For instance, it says that system is not mounted and, therefore, I cannot easily restore system partition. I tried to mount it but thereafter the phone did not boot.
Is it normal that system apps get restored if I only restore the data partion?
Thanks.

Sometimes I have the same problem, /system couldn't be mounted.
I solved it like this:
In TWRP go to Wipe -> Advanced Wipe -> Check System Partition -> Repair or Change File System -> Change File System -> EXT4.
Has anyone installed this successfully on 727 US version?

On my x720 I use another one, the latest V4 from chinese sites :
https://mega.nz/#!EVcUCY4J!nN9r170x1eL9uvZg2p4h-q_M9T3I3HxcdSRigl2DNj4
I have now installed TWRP v4 but still have problems to restore a backup.
First, I backed up everything. I tried to restore boot, system, systemimage and data. I did not restore efs, recovery and firmware. Do I have to restore firmware? What is that? What is the difference between system and system image? In any case, I got a lot of errors and the phone is very slow after I restored boot, system, systemimage and data.
Thanks!
The TWRP versions I tried (including v4) have problems and do not reliably mount my encrypted data partition. (I had a similar problem with the initial TWRP ports for the Elephone P8000. The problems were fixed and subsequent ports worked without problems.)
Moreover, if I boot into TWRP recovery the screen is flickering from time to time (probably just a cosmetic issue).
Is there an updated TWRP version 5 or something? Could you please link to the Chinese website where the TWRP port for the LePro3 is made available? Thanks!
I am trying to unlock the bootloader right now using the fastboot oem unlock-go command and it is not working on the US variety. I have also enabled the oem unlocking in dev options, as well as, debugging. Has the US variant changed things to prevent the bootloader from being unlocked?

I think that you have installed the latest version of twrp wich make problems with encrypted data.
- Install the boot.img via fastboot (fastboot flash boot boot.img)
-Format data partition via fastboot (fastboot format userdata)
-Remove the latest twrp and install the old (fastboot flash recovery twrp-3.0.2.img)
I have no problem with that twrp.

I wanted to ask a question: this ROM, compared to the overall performance (including fuel consumption) of the 20s, how are you? TWRP for Android 9 Pie?

My phone just got the android 9 update, I already had installed root with twrp on my device with android 8.0
So when I tried to re-root my phone I needed to reinstall the TWRP but it couldn't decrypt the data
I tried all of the posible solutions to this but nothing
I think that is the TWRP version that can't decrypt data in android 9.0
But in the web isn't any version that support the Mi 8 LIte with Android 9.0
Do I need to wait until someone update the TWRP version or what can I do?

You are upgrading now; for this you need to decrypt it for first time and probably every time that you switch from a miui to an AOSP rom. Be sure that your data partition is mounted and I guess you can´t see the files under TWRP. Try first with this zip https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/software/universal-dm-verity-forceencrypt-t3817389
Stock Miui re-encrypt data on first boot after factory reset, so you need to flash Universal DM-Verity
I also need TWRP for pie.
Try this recovery, It has more features than TWRP https://sourceforge.net/projects/orangefox/files/test_builds/OrangeFox-R9.0-1-platina.zip/download

If you are using the wzsx150 3.2.3 twrp found under the ROM/recovery section, versions 0121 and 0212 are both supposed to be for Android 9. I haven't tried myself though, as I am still on 8.
I can confirm version 0212 does indeed decrypt data partition, making it mountable it inside TWRP. Of course phone's now running on official Android 9 MIUI 10, updated on Wednesday.
So heads up for anyone trying to use open gapps aroma installer. No recovery will install it. Tried batik, orange fox, perp, and wzsx150 twrp and all do the same. After all the selections when the actual installation starts the device reboots (installs nothing but does save setting options) back to recovery. All reboot options (system, fastboot, etc) all reboot back to recovery only holding power button will allow device to boot into system.

Any idea why is 0212 half the size of 0121, and the others for that matter (28MB vs 60MB).
I believe it's somehow compressed. If you open these files with something like 7zip you'll see the size is very close between the two.

[AIO] Guide to Unlock bootloader , Flash TWRP and a Custom rom.

Unlocking Bootloader1. Make sure you have a sim and active mobile data. Then go to about phone tap build number 7-8 times. After that go to advanced settings > developer options > turn on OEM unlocking and then check if this device is secure and click add account and device.
2. Download Mi unlock tool from here. Extract it and paste it in C:/unlock. or else your device won't be recognized for unlocking.
3. Open Mi unlock tool and then enter the Mi account which was on your device. Put your device in fastboot mode by pressing vol- and power and then connect to PC. Press unlock and if it tells you to wait you have no other option but to wait. If your mi flash tool shows connect your device even after you have connected it. Follow this guide here.
4. After you have unlocked your bootloader reboot your phone.
Flashing TWRP and Rooting via magisk
1. Download this TWRP image here. Thanks to the original developer mauronofrio.
2. Download adb and fastboot tools here and install it.
3. Now put your phone in fastboot mode and connect it with your pc. Now where you have downloaded the TWRP file rename it to TWRP.img and open a CMD window there if you don't know how just google.
4. Type the following commands
1. fastboot devices
2. fastboot flash recovery TWRP.img
3. fastboot reboot recovery.
Click to collapse
5. Your phone will boot into TWRP now. But TWRP will be overwritten by stock miui recovery to stop that you need to flash Magisk. Download this zip move it to internal storage then flash by tapping on install and swipe to flash. Reboot your device. Reboot to recovery again to check if TWRP is present.
Now your device is rooted
OR
Flash latest OrangeFox Recovery if you don't want magisk.
Flashing A rom
1. Download.
2. Flash.
3 Format Data.
Done
Feel free to ask any questions. And don't point a finger at me for messing your device.

Flashing a custom rom is optional. You don't NEED to flash a rom to get TWRP...
---------- Post added at 06:48 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:46 PM ----------
I've unlocked the bootloader using the unlock tool and waited for 7 days,
But i rooted the device using a different method where i patched a boot.img and flashed that to the device.
Will this method still work for me as I'm already rooted but just want TWRP so i can flash other ROMs.. The post says you have to flash magisk from the (temporary) TWRP for the TWRP to stay as the recovery..
Will the magisk on my phone and the magisk installed here collide?
I just want TWRP so i can switch to a custom rom, so any input is appreciated!!

You can flash twrp and then check if it persists. If not flash magisk again their is no thing as magisk colliding lol. Just make sure you flash a newer version. And if nothing works flash stock rom and then twrp.
If you have the stock boot IMG flash it and then intsall twrp and magisk.

Flashing a custom rom is optional. You don't NEED to flash a rom to get TWRP...

Haha, makes sense! Thank you for your answers
Nevermind.. i got it to work pretty easily..
I have twrp on this device and Pixel Experience ROM and it's working all fine..
But there's this one thing where when booting to recovery, it asks me to input a password for User(0) when i try to input anything it says password failed..
From reading the log, it says it's for decrypting data(8f I'm not mistaken)
Is this important? Do i need to decrypt it?
Currently the ROM works fine with no errors, so I'm not gonna bother, but would still like to know what this "decrypting" thing is..

Yes, If you use a lock screen enter that password it will be decrypted. You will have to format data if you decide to flash any other rom anyway.

Yes Unified means all Snapdragon 720g Devices which include Joyeuse, Curtana, Gram, Excalibur.
Hey buddy, thank you for this quick step-by-step guide. I flash ROMs since 2012 and you know what? It helped me the same. Having all stuff needed for go from stock to custom concentrated in one place (plus some useful tip like the Magisk flash at the end) it's always useful and time-saving. Thank you
2 Micro-notes about fastboot btw:
- write 'fastboot (with lowered 'f'): it may confuse some newbie
- it's 'reboot' instead of 'boot'

ANE-LX1 - Change Vendor/Country Code

Hi folks, I've had a Huawei P20 Lite lying around here for a while. It is a demo device.
I was able to successfully unlock the bootloader with using the Testpoint method.
Now I need help to change the country code from "demo" to "eu" and I also need the right firmware. Is there a free way to change the country code?
I hope you can help me with that ? Thanks in advance.

Hi, look here
If you are running EMUI 9.1, flash C432 oeminfo and use variant with HuRupdater https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...0-0-046-070f-emui-8-0-0.4324543/post-85538623
https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...0-0-046-070f-emui-8-0-0.4324543/post-85538725
Thanks in advance. Somehow I can no longer get into the / system or the smartphone can no longer boot. When running HuRupdater I also get an error message that / System cannot be mounted. It only boots TWRP
I was able to import the oeminfo beforehand. There weren't any problems.

Can you write down exactly what you did?
What is your version of EMUI?
In fastboot mode run commands:
fastboot oem get-build-number
fastboot getvar vendorcountry
fastboot oem oeminforead-CUSTOM_VERSION
fastboot oem oeminforead-SYSTEM_VERSION
and post the results.
I guess I've stupidly used the wrong command line a number of times to get twrp to run.
fastboot flash system, boot or recovery twrp....
At least it worked with the country ID change ... if only a small consolation for the first
fastboot oem get-build-number
(bootloader) :ANE-LX1 8.0.0.112(C432)
fastboot getvar vendorcountry
vendorcountry: hw/eu
fastboot oem oeminforead-CUSTOM_VERSION
FAILED (remote: 'The reason of failed input oem_nv_item error!')
fastboot oem oeminforead-SYSTEM_VERSION
(bootloader) :ANE-LX1 8.0.0.112(C432)

your firmware is incomplete, it must be 8.0.0.143, if I'm not mistaken. Try again Huru method & factory reset in Stock recovery (not in TWRP!).
Or, download Service ROM Link , unpack , there's dload folder in "Software" . Copy dload folder (without unpacking it) to the OTG flash, turn off the phone and press and hold both volume buttons + Power ( this method will lock the BL again).
Thanks for the files. But i get an
Softwaere install failed
Incompatibility with current version.
Please download the correct update package.
EDIT: cant find the firmware version: ANE-L01C185B112 / ANE-LX1 8.0.0.112(C432)
EDIT2: same fail with 8.0.0.178(C432)

Probably due to incomplete firmware .112 , ( it was stupidity on my part to suggest Service ROM in this case, sorry. Maybe I was too sleepy...).
1. Try again Hurupdater method, it should work (don't forget to press Volume down)
2. Reboot into eRecovery, if possible, and select Download latest version and recovery

Okay, idon't think that's relevant anymore anyway
I found the problem. It was the TWRP version. I took the latest one (twrp-3.5.2_9-0-anne.img) and it couldn't mount the /system partition. Now I took a version from this forum (twrp-3.2.1-0.img), which seems to be specially adapted for the Huawei devices. Unfortunately, it doesn't support OTG, but that wasn't a problem because I moved the files it to the internal memory.
Only with this twrp version could HuRUpdater.zip be executed correctly and all other files just like that. Here, too, I was first asked to press the vol-down button.
After the smartphone finally boots properly, I flash the firmware via dload to lock the bootloader again and do over the Recovery Wipe data / factory reset + cach partition.
Now I'm on version 8.0.0.046(0CXB). Unfortunately the device cannot find a new firmware version and nothing can be updated via HiSuit.
Can you tell me which step I have to take now to get the latest Android version for the device?
Thank you very much so far for your help

Unfortunately, you have incomplete FW there again, I think you're doing something wrong. And until the correct FW is there, you won't be able to receive OTA update or update via dload.
If you have followed instructions to the letter , it must work.
Use this TWRP . ( I don't know why you used TWRP 3.5.2.9, in the guide there is a link to 3.2.1-pretoriano80.). 3.5.2.9 isn't fully compatible with our device.
Try this way out:
- Flash TWRP
- Wipe - format data
- Reboot back to TWRP
- Wipe - Advanced wipe - wipe Dalvik/ART, cache, data, system
- Go back and flash HuRu
Note: the installation of the first file (write radio image...) must take longer, 2-3 minutes, this is proof that the installation is proceeding properly.
Btw, have you tried update via eRecovery & Wi-Fi?
Did it exactly like that. And then the 9.1.0.370 (C432) from the same thread loaded (dload / ANE-L01_hw_eu).
Now i have the firmware: ANE-LGRP2-OVS 9.1.0.370 in the device information.
Unfortunately, there is no further update, but I also don't know whether the current one is already the most recent?
What I also notice is that Dual-Sim settings are available in the menus. The IMEI2 is only provided with 000000000000000. I know that my device "only" supports single SIM.
Can I fix that too? Then everything should be fine as far as possible

Oh, it's all clear now
Because this oeminfo is for dual SIM. Oeminfo for single SIM can be found for example here:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/c432-single-sim-oeminfo.3873312/
Also update_all_hw.zip file is for ANE-L21, you need ANE-L01, unfortunately, I don't have files for single SIM.

Maybe...You have to downgrade to Oreo via HuRupdater using downloaded files, then install TWRP over eRecovery and install stock Recovery.
Download https://androidhost.ru/2zMw and create dload folder .
In TWRP install new oeminfo.img , then go back to the main TWRP's menu, select Reboot > Power off. Use three buttons kombo to flash service ROM.
To be honest, I've never tried a variation like this, so I'm not responsible for this procedure, but it should work. The question is, is it worth it ...

Which step is missing now exactly? I followed the steps from you. I also used the files from the other thread that you linked. The single-sim / dual-sim problem is not important either. The main thing is that it works that way too

Are you sure? In my opinion, this is your main problem...
Hello, it's been a while. I sat down again and went through everything. The dual SIM files fold onto a single SIM smartphone. I was finally able to install the update via eRecovery after flashing via TWRP. Then two updates were pulled or installed via Android OS. Now I'm on 9.1.0.132 (C432E5R1P7).
