Hi,
After accidentally setting up password on startup (Settings -> Security -> ScreenLock -> Password -> Require password on startup), I can't for the love of Pete remove it. I restarted number of times, set screenlock to none, set different password, set PIN and the confirming 'No Thanks'. The device password never gets replaced by anything I set up there.
The phone is encrypted by default. TWRP is installed, the system is otherwise fully accessible.
Running RR 5.8.5 on Nougat 7.1.2
Anyone have an idea how to remove this password?

So, turned on device encryption because it's company policy that portable devices containing sensitive data have to be encrypted. So now it prompts me for my password during start up. All well and good. But now I'm trying to figure out how to change my password. In the security settings, clicking on the encryption area does nothing. Not critical now but sooner or later I will need to change that password or if I sell the device, probably decrypt it first.
Not a word about encryption in the manual. Anyone have any idea on how to change that password? Will a factory reset result in a decrypted device?
Edit: Ok, turns out the startup password after encryption is the same as the screen lock password.
Hello to all...
I hope the thread is well written.

what is going wrong:
1. I set up VPN connection with lock screen pin
2. all right for the last 2 days
3. now I want to configure a new VPN
4. I want to enter VPN settings (in settings "More Settings" in "wireless and network"
5. it's not possible, it's asking a password for credential storage...
6. i know the PIN I have entered to unlock the lock screen
7. after trying 3 times with false password it want to reset/erase the credential storage
8. I restarted phone and after, no pin is needed anymore... I'm really confused...
credential storage -> (what is this?) (is this a problem if it will be erased?)
Someone knows how to solve without a hard reset?
I'm searching in web and XDA but I can't find a solution...
I've solved.
Was very simple - found the solution on a German Forum.
Simply reset credential storage.
Just in case anyone else reads your thread with the same question. You are talking about clear credentials under security right?
yes or insert 4 times the wrong password in vpn settings, it doesn't give any problems.
after this you have to restart with vpn settings, because all vpn connections are lost and you have to give a new pin/password for access/activation to the credential storage.

Disable the screen lock security - from pattern, pin or whatever go to none.
Now you will have no VPNs or another things which might demand security, but you are able to setup them again.
Guys need help . I have note 3 neo and when I open "vpn" it shows "enter creditional storage password " how to solve that.?
Just go to the lock screen settings and set a new screen lock...
Like pin, pattern, password but not swipe, that's it.
The problem in encryption (s3 neo)
Hello to all
I have been a problem for Android devices
Can I change my password
Now is the lock screen PIN
I want to change it, but this option is disabled Pattern
I now I need to change my password, but I can not
Can you help me
Thanks
I can't reset my phone because it asks for my alternative password, and I can't change my alternative password because I need it in the first place. What are my other options?
EDIT: Nevermind, I figured out how to get into recovery mode finally
GF did the same thing too as soon as she got it her new phone after 1 minute
Here is how to reset the alternative password without actually knowing your alternative password...
1) Go to Apps -> Settings -> Device Administrators -> Enable Android Device Manager
2) Log in to your gmail account on the Android Device Manager website: google.com/android/devicemanager
3) Click Lock and reset device password
4) Enter your new password

After we lost the phone, we used Android Device Manager and locked the phone.
Went into
Settings > Security > Screen Lock
and both the 'None' and 'Swipe' options are greyed out.
There is the message 'disabled by administrator, encryption policy, or credential storage'.
I've since gone into Device Administrators and unchecked Android Device Manager.
I've also went into Trust agents and turned of 'Smart Lock (Google)'.
Unfortunately both 'None' and 'Swipe' are still disabled in the Screen Lock options.
My 2 questions are:
1) how do i remove the password settings so that i can go back to 'swipe' as an option.
2) after said 'screen lock' option is fixed, should i turn Trust Agent back on? What does 'Smart Lock' do?

Your device is encripted so you will not be able to use none or swipe. Does your phone ask for password when you turn it on ?
Hi everyone,
A month ago, I encrypted my phone (Galaxy S5 Plus - kccat6) currently under LineageOS 15.1 (Android 8.1.0) and TWRP 3.2.3-0.
Normally, after the encryption, when I started my phone, I would get a password request to decrypt my phone before launching Android. Access to TWRP was also password protected.
However, for a week now, for no apparent reason, I no longer have any password requests at startup and TWRP no longer asks for a password either.
In the "Security and Confidentiality" section, under "Encryption and identifiers", the phone is always indicated as encrypted... so it's impossible to request the encryption of my data again. At the same time, when I use Trust (integrated with LineageOS), it says "Encryption : Disabled".
I don't understand it. I did nothing in particular to have the encryption deleted.
Do you have any idea what to do to recover the encryption on my phone? And eventually why I may have lost the encryption?
Thank you in advance
OK I found a solution. It seems that it's a bug well known since many versions of Android. Strange that it has not been corrected...
Here's what helped me to fix the problem (found here : https://issuetracker.google.com/issues/37010136 )
How to reproduce:
1. Go to Settings -> Accessibility -> Switch Access
2. Enable Switch Access service
3. Go to Security -> Screen lock
4. Incorrect warning text appears under Pattern, PIN, and Password options
How to fix
1. Go to Security -> Screen lock
2. Select one of Pattern, PIN, and Password options
3. Select "Require pattern to start device" on the next UI
4. Finish setup
5. Go to Settings -> Accessibility -> Switch Access
6. Enable Switch Access service
7. Incorrect text ("If you turn on Switch Access, your device won't use your screen lock to enhance data encryption") on the prompt. It's incorrect and misleading because "Require pattern to start device" is already set and screen lock will apear on start up.
